From the Development Chair My sincere thanks goes to all of our donors who supported The Barstow School 2009-2010 Annual Fund through direct gifts and participation in our Common Threads Gala and Auction and Barstow Knights Golf Classic. I am also grateful to those generous donors who helped launch the Standards High capital campaign. Everyone’s gift makes a difference. The most important thing is to have strong participation from our many constituents – alumni, parents, grandparents, parents of alums, faculty, foundations and friends of the school. I look forward to an exciting year ahead and all we can accomplish working together on behalf of our school. —Susan L. McGee ’76 Board of Trustees Development Chair

Standards High Capital Campaign The name Standards High represents not only the name of our school anthem, but also stands for a new and vigorous effort to bring certain portions of our campus up to the “high ideals” we hold for
The Standards High campaign represents an opportunity to dramatically improve Barstow’s facilities and to have an immediate impact on our students. You can make a significant difference in the lives of our students and faculty by supporting the completion of these projects with a charitable gift.
ourselves. This very exciting program is designed to keep Barstow’s facility in line with its mission: …symmetrical development of mind, body and character. The goal of our Standards High campaign is three‑fold: Auditorium Renovation Made possible in 1962 through a generous gift from the Raymond B. White family, the facility had some of the original equipment from 1962 – including the seats. Renovations to the auditorium include modern, comfortable seating and corresponding flooring (already provided for through a generous gift from a Barstow family), replacement of the lighting and sound

equipment, a new projection system and a new curtain. While it is in our long-range plan to build a new, fine arts facility, that is not fiscally realistic at this time. But, all of the new equipment being funded by the Standards High campaign in the existing auditorium will be transferable to the new facility when the time comes.

Classroom Renovations Middle and Upper School classrooms don’t date to 1962, but they are as new as 1967. Although it was perfect for our requirements then, we now need a fresher appearance and better lighting and storage. The classrooms that front the Zen Garden and other open spaces will have doors installed allowing teachers to use these places as outdoor classrooms. With early dollars received, some renovation has already begun with new flooring, lights, wall coverings and shelving. These changes are necessary to keep these areas in sync with the rest of the school and its 21st century appeal.

A Lasting Contribution to Others A will is an expression of your values… both material and spiritual. As you value your family, friends, institutions and community, it is important that your will provides a lasting reflection of that. One of the ways you can do this is through a bequest to The Barstow School. This can be either a specified sum or a percentage after other estate obligations have been met. Best of all, it doesn’t have to be large to make an impact. Every bequest helps the School further its mission to promote sound scholarship and to give symmetrical development to mind, body and character. For more information on how to include The Barstow School in you will, please contact Pat Oppenheimer at 816‑277‑0414.

Common Threads Gala and Auction
Morocco met South Beach with Style and Flair!
Vibrant colors, incredible auction items, a fantastic ice sculpture bearing the Common Threads logo, and a packed house with Barstow friends and family sums up the 2010 gala and auction, Common Threads. The springtime celebration brought together parents, alumni, faculty, and friends for a beautiful party. Co-chairmen Melissa Rock, Stephanie Dockhorn and Shea Walsworth created an exotic getaway in our own backyard, as the Barstow gym and a gorgeously decorated tent were transformed into a serious party with serious benefits for our school. Bringing the Gala and Auction back “in house” was a brilliant move by the trio of chairmen. While bidding and wining and dining, guests were reminded of the mission of the evening - helping support the Annual Fund and the tradition of a Barstow education. And, raising nearly $180,000 made the whole event a colorful success!
