DRIVING FORWARD
CHAMPIONS

LOOKING FORWARD WITH GRATITUDE
Many of you have heard me say that The Barstow School is the oldest independent school west of the Mississippi. This fact is a testament to the outstanding foundation established by Mary Louise Barstow.
Today, Mary Louise Barstow’s spirit of innovation is still thriving on our campus and beyond as we begin our 140th year. The 2022–2023 school year brought record enrollment and fundraising, the opening of the Dan and Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC, new baseball and soccer fields and the further development of new global programs. Additionally, through the incredible generosity of our community, the school raised the necessary funds to add a second driveway into the school.
During the 2023–2024 school year, you will experience a campus in the midst of a building transition. Thanks to your donations and a $7.5 million gift from an anonymous donor in 2021, we are undertaking projects that will enhance and develop opportunities for our students. You’ll see the beginnings of those projects in this report, and you’ll see them progress in the months and years to come. Our founders, Mary Louise Barstow and Ada Brann, would be proud of their school today.
Shane A. Foster President of the Barstow SchoolsThank you for making this year another remarkable year for The Barstow School. This year was especially unique as we launched a community-wide fundraising campaign in October, and I am thrilled to share that our community raised more than $1 million dollars during Driving Forward, the campaign for the second driveway. Matched by an anonymous donor, we raised $2.3 million to build the much-needed second driveway.
Knowing this project would improve the campus experience for everyone, we enthusiastically sought donations, sold personalized bricks and asked for your most meaningful gifts to create the momentum to reach our goal.
Because of you and your generosity, we continue to improve our campus in ways that impact the lives of our families, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. Thank you for all you do for our outstanding school!
Gratefully yours,
Jennifer Dreiling Vice President AdvancementWe grew stronger together in 2020, we began building together in 2021, and in 2022 we challenged our community to drive forward. Together, we did it! Barstow is experiencing enrollment growth that make a second access point from State Line Road imperative. We launched Driving
Forward in October 2022. Thank you for helping us cross the finish line in record time.

DRIVING FORWARD Second Drive Paves Way for Progress
July 28, 2023 Vice President of The Barstow Schools & Chief Operating Officer Liz Bartow, Board of Trustees members Tiffany Simpson, Greg Graves, Erin Garrison and Jennifer Gille Bacon, Vice President of Advancement Jennifer Dreiling.Your unwavering support has paved the way for brighter horizons and boundless possibilities for our students. We sincerely thank you for being the driving force behind our success.
— Shane Foster PRESIDENT OF THE BARSTOW SCHOOLSTHE SUMMER OF 2023 was once again filled with projects and progress on the Barstow campus, shifting into high gear on Friday, July 28, with the groundbreaking for the highly anticipated second driveway. The new access point from State Line Road leading to the middle school entrance on the school’s south side will improve the daily dropoff and pickup process and reduce traffic congestion.
OUTGROWING THE SINGLE ENTRY
When Barstow opened the State Line campus with 315 stu dents in 1962, it was difficult to predict that sixty years down the road, the school would be surrounded by new interstates, businesses and high-density neighborhoods. This August, Barstow’s opening enrollment reached near ly 770 students. The increased traffic that comes with more students, growing neigh borhoods and commuter traffic made the need for another driveway imperative.
ACCELERATED GIVING
Barstow launched campaign for a second driveway, Green & White Gala on October 8, 2022, with an initial goal of raising $2 million dollars for a 1,250 foot two-lane drive. A generous dollar-for-dollar gift from an anonymous donor accelerated giving from our community, and the campaign topped off the tank at $2.3 million on June 30 — a record amount raised in record time. Past parents Charlotte and John H. Morrow III and current Barstow grandparents Anne & JB Hodgdon each gave more than $100,000
to the campaign. Along with 86 additional donors who gave $5,000 or more to Driving Forward, they will be recognized with an engraved brick that will be permanently installed on campus.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
A VERY SINCERE thank you to our Barstow community, who understood the importance and value of supporting the Driving Forward campaign and helped us achieve the fundraising goal for our second driveway!
When we set out to raise the funds needed to improve and enhance our campus, we hoped that you would give as generously as you have in the past. And you did just that. Barstow families, friends and alumni responded with gifts of all sizes, and with the incredibly generous matching gift from an anonymous donor, we successfully reached — and then exceeded — our goal.
The Barstow community is proud of providing the area’s most innovative independent school education, and investments like this allow us to strive for greatness as we look for ways to continuously improve. Here’s to an exciting year ahead as construction begins. Thank you again for your generosity and commitment to The Barstow School.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
New & Improved Athletic Facilities are a Game Changer
THE BOYS SOCCER team kicked off a new era for Barstow athletics on September 23, 2022. In front of an excited home crowd, the Knights christened the new $1 million artificial turf field with a 3–1 win over Northeast Kansas City. The team went on to claim the district championship during their fall season and in the spring, the girls team followed up with similar success. They won a pair of matches at home for the district championship — and both teams benefited from practicing and competing on the new soccer pitch.
Artificial turf can withstand intense and increased use without damage and is impervious to weather-related cancellations. The field, funded by a $7.5 million dollar anonymous gift received in 2021, kicked off a building boom for Knights’ athletic programs that will continue throughout the 2023–2024 school year.
A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME
The next project up to the plate was a major baseball field renovation. The Knights opened their season with a home double header on Saturday March 25, at the beautiful new Graves Family Stadium. Scores of fans — families, friends, faculty and staff and alumni — attended the Opening Day Celebration.
Thanks to a $750,000 lead gift from the Graves Family Foundation, drainage issues have been resolved, artificial turf added to the infield and the scoreboard upgraded. The Hart family donated $200,000 to build spacious and functional dugouts. Michell and Tim Prier made a $72,000 gift for batting cages, and Deanna and Greg Graves gave an additional $37,000 to complete the renovation. PCC Sports and JE Dunn also gave generously to the project.
The baseball team responded with a big swing: they posted a 24–8 regular season record, won the district championship for the first time since 2008, and made it to the state final four in Springfield in May.
Baseball Opening Day, March 25, 2023.BUILDING MOMENTUM
This fall, construction will begin on the next major addition to Barstow’s athletic facilities. The $3.5 million athletic building, also funded through the 2021 transformational gift, will be equipped with golf simulator hitting bays and a practice putting green, dance studio, team meeting room, team locker rooms, spectator restrooms and a concession stand. Designed by Multistudio and built by OnSite Construction, the two-story building is expected to open in the fall of 2024.
Renovations are also complete on a $500,000 renovation of the physical education locker rooms. They provide student-athletes with digital combination lockers, new showers, equipment storage and contemporary space for team meetings.
“The new building, the new fields and the modernization of existing spaces shows Barstow’s ongoing commitment to our teams,” Director of Athletics Don Stelting said. “Every season, our athletes bring home more trophies and more championships. Providing them with the best facilities helps them focus on giving their best effort to their teammates and the school.”
A NEW LOOK FOR THE KNIGHTS
Barstow has introduced a refreshed athletic brand to accompany its modern fields and facilities. Athletes and fans are already sporting the bold new shield that symbolizes the Barstow Knights.
In line with the brand redesigns by many professional and college-level teams, the former logo featuring the Knight character has been replaced by a the shield and variations of Barstow, Barstow Knights, or a singular B. While the designs are contemporary, they nod to tradition by incorporating the school colors and Barstow’s founding in 1884.

WHY WE GIVE
WE DON’T JUST LOVE THE BARSTOW SCHOOL. We are deeply grateful for The Barstow School.
When our oldest grandson was getting ready to go to kindergarten, our family learned that the student-teacher class ratio in the school district he was to attend would be 28:1. His parents started looking at private schools. They interviewed, toured and spoke with others they knew. They chose Barstow because “it just felt so welcoming when we walked through the front door.”
Fast forward 14 years. Our oldest grandson graduated from Barstow in 2022 and just began his sophomore year at an excellent college in Texas. He was accepted there for three reasons. First, he was a diligent student, encouraged and mentored by amazing Barstow teachers to strive to be the best student and person he could possibly be. Second, Barstow has a national reputation for excellence, and colleges know that any student coming from Barstow is going to be top notch. And third, Barstow has tremendous college counselors dedicated to finding the right school for each student based on their interests and capabilities. Our younger grandson just began his senior year. And what an exciting year it will be, beginning with college visits and decisions and culminating in a time-honored commencement weekend that creates lifelong memories for graduates and families.
We are so grateful that our grandsons spent these years at a school which thrives on educating the whole child: mind, body and character. Academics are foremost, but so is kindness, respect and caring for others. I know that Barstow played a role in the wonderful young men they have become.
We always ‘did our part’ to contribute annually to Barstow, but the pandemic changed everything for us. Friends with kids in public schools worried that their children were isolated and not getting daily instruction. Barstow quickly implemented an action plan. We made a large gift to help defray unbudgeted expenses that provided visual, online daily instruction to its students. And we’ve kept giving generously because of everything Barstow has done for our grandsons. I encourage you to join us in supporting The Barstow School.
