THE BARSTOW SCHOOL • 2023–2024

IMPACT REPORT

WELCOME

As we celebrate The Barstow School’s 140th anniversary, I am delighted to reflect on our storied past and the exciting advancements ahead. The 2024–2025 school year not only marks a historic moment for our school, but also highlights the strength and generosity of our community. Your support has been instrumental in driving our mission forward and achieving many milestones.

This past year was remarkable because of the extraordinary generosity of our donors. Combined with a historic 2021 gift from an anonymous donor, we were able to construct a state-of-the-art athletic center and complete a second entrance to our school. These projects enhance our campus infrastructure and ensure that Barstow remains at the forefront of providing an exemplary educational environment.

Additions to our physical campus symbolize our commitment to excellence and our readiness to meet future challenges. Our donors’ support is a testament to the confidence they have in us to continue providing a top-tier education and to uphold our mission to provide symmetrical development of mind, body, and character.

We are deeply grateful for our community’s unwavering support. Thank you for being an integral part of our ongoing story. As we honor our past and look to the future, I am reminded of the incredible achievements we have made since 1884, and will continue to make together.

Sincerely,

“Education should open windows for you on every side to see all that has gone on in the past and therefore understand what is going on in the present.”

BUILDING ON EXCELLENCE

ATHLETIC CENTER NAMED FOR PRESIDENT SHANE FOSTER

Barstow is proud to open the Foster Athletic Center, a facility that reshapes campus and reconfirms the school’s commitment to athletic excellence, in September 2024. The 12,000 square foot, two-story center features state-of-the-art golf hitting bays, a dance studio, locker rooms, event space, a concession stand and an outdoor patio with views of the soccer and baseball fields. The center is named in honor of President Shane Foster, who will retire in June 2025 after 17 years of dedicated leadership. The $3.5 million center was funded by an anonymous donor, who gave a $7.5 million gift in 2021.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we extend our deepest gratitude to Shane for his bold leadership and for his commitment to the mission and values of The Barstow School,” Board Chair Soni Patel said.

Vice President Admissions and Varsity Boys Golf Coach Joe Fox ’04

KNIGHTS DRIVE

EAGERLY AWAITED SECOND ENTRANCE OPENS

Barstow’s second entrance, Knights Drive, is now officially open. This new driveway is located south of the existing Barstow School Drive entrance, running alongside the outfield fence of the Graves Family Baseball Stadium. It provides access to the Foster Athletic Center and middle school entrance. Additionally, two new parking lots have been constructed, adding 147 parking spaces. Through the 2022–2023 Driving Forward campaign, our community generously contributed $1 million, matched by a $1.3 million gift from an anonymous donor, bringing the total to $2.3 million raised.

MARQUEE REFRESH

In March, the iconic State Line Road marquee received a facelift that included brick and mortar repair, a bolder dimensional nameplate and a new message board insert for celebrating student accomplishments.

WELCOMING WALKWAY

A brick-lined walkway leading to the middle school entrance acknowledges donors who gave $5,000 or more to Driving Forward. The walkway is surrounded by beautiful landscaping and benches.

RESTORED & IMPROVED

The Sears Memorial Gateway, dedicated in 1972, has also been restored. Brick pillars that flank the circle drive were repaired and capped with new lights. Aging planters were replaced with custom stone work.

ROOTS OF REMEMBRANCE

ENHANCING OUTDOOR SPACES FOR OUR COMMUNITY

This campaign offers the Barstow community an opportunity to honor or remember loved ones by purchasing a tree, bench or picnic table (or other options), each accompanied by a personalized plaque. It’s also a unique way to celebrate milestone reunions or any special occasion.

By contributing to this campaign, you not only commemorate cherished individuals or moments but also help beautify and enhance our outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy. Join us in honoring memories and strengthening community connections through the Roots of Remembrance campaign.

ENGAGED AND INSPIRED

ALUMNI COMMUNITY

FELLOW ALUMNI

I am so happy to share updates about our alumni community in this special section of our Impact Report. Since I started my role in January, it has been a pleasure connecting with alumni from the Class of 1954 to our most recent alumni: the Class of 2024. We have shared stories over coffee dates, challenged each other in pickleball and toured our campuses together.

In the following pages, I hope you see familiar faces and enjoy reading your classmates’ updates and accomplishments. The amazing paths Barstow graduates take never cease to amaze me. This year, our alumni have hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, performed around the country and the world, and celebrated major life events such as marriages and new family members. One alumna even won an Emmy Award.

Thank you for keeping us up to date with your stories!

Sincerely,

Lauren is a 2015 graduate of The Barstow School who later attended The University of Notre Dame (B.A. The Program of Liberal Studies) and The University of Kansas (M.A. English Literature). She has studied abroad in Angers, France, received bylines in The New York Times and married a familiar face: Will Kanan ’13.

A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP

For 17 years, Shane Foster has exemplified exceptional leadership as President of The Barstow School. His visionary approach has significantly advanced Barstow’s reputation for academic excellence and innovation. Under his stewardship, Barstow created distinctive programs and initiatives that extended the school’s influence locally and globally. As one of the longest-serving heads of school, second only to Mary Louise Barstow, Shane Foster has played a crucial role in shaping Barstow into a world-renowned independent school, leaving a legacy of excellence that will endure for generations.

One of Mr. Foster’s most remarkable achievements has been the expansion of Barstow’s global footprint. He established international campuses in China, Ghana, and Türkiye, and forged partnerships with schools across Central and South America, Australia and Europe. These efforts ensure that Barstow students not only receive a top-tier education. but also become global citizens, prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Mr. Foster led Barstow’s integration of technology into the curriculum. He launched the first online classes in 2013, a forward-thinking initiative that put the school at

the forefront of digital education. He embraced STEAM learning early on, culminating in the opening of the Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space in 2022, which serves every Barstow student as well as hundreds of students across Kansas City.

His tenure saw unprecedented enrollment growth, the expansion of campus facilities, financial stability and increased philanthropy, including the largest single gift in the school’s history—a transformative $7.5 million donation. This funding facilitated significant campus improvements, including construction of a new athletic center named in his honor. Signature programs such as BTVN and robotics became integral parts of Barstow’s offerings under Mr. Foster’s leadership. His dedication and resilience during the covid-19 pandemic, when Barstow remained open for in-person learning during the 2020–2021 school year, demonstrated his steadfast support for the school community.

Shane Foster will have a lasting impact on The Barstow School. His visionary leadership has preserved and enhanced Barstow’s legacy as a leading independent school, establishing him as an outstanding figure in the world of education.
