reate the perfect balance of academics and fun for your child by selecting a morning academic camp and adding an afternoon art, swimming or sports camp. Our popular academic camps are a great way to review, maintain and enhance skills introduced in the previous school year.

Skill Sharpener provides extra help and reinforces foundational skills to prepare your children for the grade level they will enter in the fall. YOUniversity offers your child a “sneak peek” into the next grade level and provides enrichment activities. The curricular emphasis in each of these camps focuses on individual skill development and learning strategies in language arts and math. Each camp maintains a low camper-to-staff ratio. The camp will have a teacher as well as a teaching assistant, allowing campers to advance at their own pace. We encourage open communication between parents and teachers. Instructors will provide progress updates during the third and sixth week of camp for grades 1–5 and during the fourth week for grades 6–8.

YOUniversity provides an atmosphere that feeds your curiosity while giving a sneak peek into the next grade level. This camp focuses on language arts and math skills while incorporating other subject areas. The atmosphere encourages you to analyze, evaluate and create. You may want to consider YOUniversity if you will benefit from an advanced program of enrichment in reading and math. A typical Summer at Barstow week begins with music in the circle drive, high fives and throngs of excited campers ready to tackle new challenges, learn new skills and quench their thirst for fun. The sheer number of academic and adventure camps makes Barstow’s program stand out from any other in the Kansas City area. Campers and parents alike tell us that their weeks on campus are the stuff summer memories are made of. Here are six more reasons that Barstow is the best place to be this summer:

KC

ONE TO GROW ON

SHARPEN SOCIAL SKILLS

EDUCATE THE WHOLE CHILD

“The summer program gave me the

“Our camps are like communities away

“There are so many different types of kids

confidence to realize I can create

from home, where kids learn to work with

today and they have multiple interests.

community wherever I go. I came not

each other and adult mentors.”

It’s a matter of and, not or. We have choic-

knowing anyone, and left years later having formed great friendships.” — Lisa, longtime camper and staff member

Our campers are having so much fun, they might not even realize they are also growing socially, emotionally and intellectually. Summer at Barstow campers try new things and develop skills that they might not achieve in other environments. KIDS WITH CHARACTER The American Camp Association says the best summer camps offer experiential education while developing the four C’s: contribution, commitment, compassion and character. Kids participating in Barstow sports camps learn teamwork with an emphasis on enjoying the sport and refining skills, rather than winning a game. In arts and STEM camps, they encourage each other while trying new activities like live theatre performances or challenging science experiments. In Service Sampler and other camps, kids learn the value of giving back to Kansas City nonprofit organizations.

— Max Williams, Summer at Barstow assistant director

Campers forge friendships at Barstow. They connect quickly through shared interests and experiences, in small group settings facilitated by experienced teachers and assistants. EASE THE SUMMER SLIDE The summer slide is that tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Summer at Barstow offers tremendously popular academic camps that combine enrichment with fun. Skill Sharpener is for kids who are on grade level and want to stay there. YOUniversity is a forward-thinking enrichment camp that gives students a head start on the next academic year. “Our academic camps are the launching pad that pique a students’ interest in learning year-round,” Summer at Barstow Director Dan McNickle says. “Our teachers give pats on the shoulders and high fives and campers say, ‘Wow, I was actually in school and having fun at the same time.’ Parents see that and want to keep that spark going during the school year.”

es that engage every interest and every camper who comes to Summer at Barstow.” — Dan McNickle, Summer at Barstow director

Summer camp can be fun and educational. Campers can try academics in the morning and archery in the afternoon. Over the course of eight weeks, they can indulge their interests in literature and creative writing, arts and crafts, gaming, performance, sports and science. They can experience and experiment without fear of failure. BECOME PART OF THE BARSTOW FAMILY Finally, Summer at Barstow brings together kids of all ages and backgrounds to build community. Parents and campers say that family feeling — carefully crafted by experienced staff who share a commitment to creating Kansas City’s best camps — keeps them coming back every year. “I loved attending and working at Summer at Barstow each year because it felt like my home away from home,” one camper told us. Another said, “You get to choose from so much. It’s one of the best parts of my summer!”

KEEP THE LEARNING GOING ALL YEAR   Once you experience Summer at Barstow, we think you’ll want to learn more about a year-round Barstow education.

Our goal is to make our innovative learning environment accessible and affordable for every family. Contact us at admissions@barstowschool.org for more information.

Mini Camp

Mini Camp is an engaging and active atmosphere for 3 and 4 year old campers. Join us for a new theme each week for half- or full-day camps. The weekly themes guide interactive activities in large and small group settings. Campers will enjoy a balance of organized and self-directed activities including art projects, stories, songs, cooking, science, water play and quiet/ rest time. Weekly special guests such as firefighters, balloon artists, interactive storytellers, puppet shows and many more will help further develop the theme each week in an engaging way.

M

ini and Kindi Camp provide campers with an environment to grow physically, socially and emotionally. Early childhood professionals engage campers in a balance of independent and group activities to develop skills for successful integration into preschool through kindergarten. Mini and Kindi campers have a 4:1 camper-to-staff ratio. Our early childhood camps provide a caring, nurturing and supportive environment for each camper. Mini campers must be at least three on or before May 28 and be pottytrained to enroll.
