Welcome to May in the big city. This Beat Jakarta magazine is again jam packed with everything you need to keep entertained in Jakarta. Inside you will find all kinds of information on the entertainment coming our way over the next month that varies from film festivals, trance DJs, metal bands, to international indie and mainstream rock and pop bands, art and fashion shows. It looks like another busy month ahead so check what’s on in the Timeline inside to keep track of where you have to be as the month moves forward. We have also added ticket information on the Timeline. In this edition we are adding a new section called TBJ: Kemang which will be the beginning of dissecting Jakarta into three distinct nightlife areas. Namely TBJ: Kemang, TBJ: Central and TBJ: Kota. The Beat will roll these sections out over the next few editions, but first we begin with Kemang. Our intrepid Kemang editor has been walking the back roads and main streets of the southern zone finding out the titbits that matter and will continue to do so in future editions. He pays as he goes (who doesn’t in this town) and says it how it is. The information is intended to be as unbiased and unadulterated as we can make it (without losing fingers or kneecaps anyway). The object of having the three sections is to define this city as it is in reality, hipster/family south, trendy money centre and no holds barred north. It should be fun finding all this info out. We hope you enjoy this edition of The Beat Jakarta and we also hope you have a rocking month of May. Soundrenaline 2013 Rock festival Soundrenaline will celebrate its 11th anniversary on June 29th in Yogyakarta with the theme ‘A Journey of Rock Harmony’ and will feature many of Indonesia’s best rock bands including Pas Band, Noah, Netral, /rif, Koil, and Superman is Dead. Two legendary bands will also take part; Dewa 19 that will feature its former vocalist Ari Lasso, and Potlot Jamming (Slank featuring BIP). Before the main event, the Road to Soundrenaline will be held in Padang (May 4), Banjarmasin (May 25) and Denpasar (June 15).

Wine & Cheese Expo 2013 The Wine & Cheese Expo is part of the Jakarta Fashion & Food Festival at Sumarecon Kelapa Gading. This year, the event will be held at Multi Purpose Hall, La Piazza, from May 8 to 26. Printemps Français 2013 Printemps Francais Art and French Culture Festival is held every year by Institut Francais in Indonesia. The 9th event this year, will see French Culture from artist in 14 programs and 53 shows. Printemps Francais 2013 will come to 13 cities of Indonesia, and this year, Kudus, Makassar, Malang, and Solo will see their very first Printemps Francais. This festival will be presenting five programs which is a collaboration between Indonesian and French artists, such as Ine Febriyanti with Theater Director David Bobbe, Chabatz d’Entrar with Bottlesmoker Band featuring Bandung artists. Visual artist Valerie Terrier will collaborate with Indonesian custom bike artist Veroland from Kickass Choppers. Bruno Procopio, the Batavia Madrigal Singers, and Pierre Klein will present a photography project in Jakarta. Printemps Francais 2013 will be from May 15 to June 23 and travel through Jakarta, Bali, Balikpapan, Bandung, Kudus, Makassar, Malang, Medan, Purwokerto, Semarang, Surabaya, Solo, and Yogyakarta. www.beatmag.com

Cedric Gervais first nabbed a summer residency at Papa Gaio, a top club in St.Tropez, France when he was only 14 years old, way before he was legally allowed to party with the club’s crowd. Calling someone’s bluff can sometimes be a high-stakes game
T
he world became morbidly fascinated by the political poker going on recently between North Korea on one side, and a variety of other countries including South Korea, the US, China and Japan, as well as the United Nations. The stakes couldn’t be any higher as failure to resolve the current standoff could have resulted in nuclear war, arrived at either by accident or intention. While we might be tempted to wonder what this has to do with our humdrum everyday lives, the underlying processes involved in the political brinkmanship bring into play tactical considerations of a kind that we rely on, almost on a daily basis: How to win at the game of bluff and counter-bluff.

If you go shopping at a traditional market in Jakarta where prices are not fixed or take an ojek (motorcycle taxi) when traffic congestion in the capital city is bad, you will not be able to avoid having to haggle over the price, which should be agreed before the trip starts. The chances are that the person with whom you are haggling is far more skilled at it than you, so is likely to be able to persuade you to agree a final price that works in their favour. One way to redress the balance is to consider the following tactical moves: • Make a mental calculation of how much you are really prepared to pay. Your opening bid should be around half that amount. (Conversely, your adversary is likely to ask for twice what s/he expects to get ultimately.) • Try and bargain in Bahasa Indonesia.

If you are completely new to Indonesia this option may not be available but even if you can manage just a few words it will convince the other person that you have some familiarity with the country and they might be more “friendly” to you. If you’re already reasonably fluent the effect will be to impose a limit on your adversary’s opening offer, lowering it considerably from what they would attempt to ask a complete novice to pay. • If shopping for an item, pretend not to be that interested in it even though you may actually be. Similarly, if you intend to hire an ojek, do so where other ojek drivers are also waiting so it is clear that if you cannot agree a price there is always someone else you can ask. It’s a buyer’s market when the supply is plentiful but remember, if it starts to drizzle the price will rise astronomically as potential passengers compete with each other for transportation before the deluge. The same principle applies to taking taxis. Drivers of taxis from less reputable companies will often “forget” about using the meter late at night; if it’s raining, forget about the meter completely and expect to pay well above the odds.
• Be prepared to pretend to walk away from a deal as a final tactical move: It is surprising just how effective this can be, as a vendor will often accept a lower price than originally anticipated rather than lose a deal altogether. This tactic can be particularly effective if you are the very first or last customer of the day at an open-air market stall, for example. The stallholder will do anything to avoid an aborted transaction. Do not exploit this unreasonably, as the vendor should not be denied a fair price for the item concerned. Elements of many of the tactics outlined above also came into play in the political standoff between North Korea and its regional neighbours as both sides struggled to find the appropriate way to express what they really wanted. It has been observed that the problem with brinksmanship is that the brink may not lie where either side thinks it should be. If haggling over an item at an open-air market, the worst that can happen is failure to agree a price for it. When conventional or nuclear missiles are an ingredient in the mix, the stakes are unimagineably higher. (Jim Read)

Thus, his international debut and being a part of global EDM scene is set, ready, and about to begin. Here in Indonesia, the man is busy in the studio collaborating with talents such as Lona Cindy, Bayu Risa, and Ricad Hutapea but if you’re quick, you might still find him DJing in Jakarta and maybe a few other cities in Indonesia as well. What music are you into at the moment? These days I’ve been listening to a lot of jazz—especially in the morning. Chet Baker, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Miles Davis have been on rotation in the early hours. Tunes from these guys function as a kind of spirit ignition for my day. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Jeez... I don’t really remember. It was either Chrisye’s Hip Hip Hura Hura or Michael Jackson’s Thriller. I can’t remember any particular reason why, I was just a kid who bought a record because I liked the way it sounded. What are your all-time favourite albums? Well, for that question, I have a long list. Each effectively shapes my mood to different kinds of situations. When the day is one of those long recording session kind of days, John Coltrane’s Giant Step is always effective as a mood booster. When the day needs me to be creative, to make fresh new tunes, I’ll go for Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suites. And, when the day is full of meetings, Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall.
Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? I haven’t a clue. All I can say is that if I wasn’t making music, I’d like to be a chef. What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? The Magic by Rhonda Byrne. I just started Chapter One. Oh, but I love The Secret. What new movie should people see? Why? Have you seen Argo yet? In the beginning it feels like you need a good supply of popcorn to keep you awake, but then you realise it’s a kind of slow story building movie. It gets interesting from the middle to the end... you’ll be glued to your seat. What music do you choose to start your weekend? Bebel Gilberto or some other such Brazilian music is always a good start. But then again, it depends on how busy I am. If I have to work that weekend, to get into the right kind of mood, I’d just listen to the playlist I’ve worked out for my show. And music you choose to end your weekend? My weekends usually end with music from the radio. I’m usually on the way from airport to home, and listening to stations which play the latest pop music so that I keep up-to-date on what is really going on out there.
What was the worst record you ever purchased? Milli Vanilli. I still feel cheated.

The Beat Jakarta (TBJ) is all about entertainment. It would only be proper if we dedicated a whole section to Kemang, one of three entertainment hot spots alongside with “anything goes” Kota, and “yuppie elite” Central - our designation for any venue in between Kota and Kemang. We chose to start with Kemang because the area is centralised, and offers a myriad of entertainment options, from cheap beers to nightclubs to expensive champagne brunches, for locals and expats alike. Every month we will sniff out the area's vibrant new happenings, even in the small gangs (alleyways) that we think are worth a mention. What’s also special about the TBJ: Kemang section is that we do things independently; meaning we pay for our own food and call it as it is, opinionated in our nature. For this month we will start off with a list of our choice of four coffee destinations and we have a go at a new Italian restaurant Mama Rosy. hanks to Starbucks the idea of sipping coffee nowadays is somehow cooler to be done outside the home, at a coffee house with a friend or two. Not only is it about good coffee, the place has to be cosy with sofas and not cold fiberglass chairs at fast food restaurants. Wi-Fi quality and easy access to power plugs are also important as many will agree that the coffee shop is also considered as a place to get work done. Listed below are four Kemang coffee shops that we recommend to the readers of TBJ: Kemang.

Kemang Raya #6A it came in a rather small cup, however the (021) 2952 9914 coffee was very good, fragrant and nutty,

chat with the waitress reveals that A Coffeewar was set up four years ago by a coffee trader that buys coffee
beans directly from farmers all across Indonesia, and supplies to various cafes around town. Although the owner deals with various coffee varieties, Coffeewar only sells three of Indonesia’s top beans: Jawa, Mandailing (Sumatra), and Toraja (Sulawesi). Don’t expect cappuccinos or caffe lattes, here they believe coffee is best served black- although they do provide milk and sugar. Interestingly, you get to choose one of five serving methods; clever coffee dripper, French press, ibrik (Turkish coffee maker), stove top, or the famous tubruk (grounded coffee in the cup). The setup of the venue is quite basic, somewhat like a living room with
books here and there. Coffeewar is doing quite well; last year they expanded the venue two-folds. It has established itself as a hangout joint for the people from the local movie industry, as the brother’s owner happens to be a movie director. I tried the Jawa prepped with a French press and found it to be one of the most tastiest cup of joes I’ve had, best accompanied by their Cheese Tape (fermented cassava) muffin. The Wi-Fi was clocked at 4Mbps. Pros: Affordable in-house grounded coffees, different serving methods Cons: Not many food options, not much of a separation between the smoking and non-smoking section.

on’t be surprised coming into Caswell’s Coffee to find the setup more like a coffee distributor’s office as nowadays their core business is to supply coffee beans, machines, and other coffee related essentials to other coffee shops rather than running their own humble one. Caswell’s Coffee supplies coffee to places such as Blitz Megaplex theaters and even out of town coffee shops- one package ready for pickup at the doorstep was addressed to “The Coffee” in Bandar Lampung. Located on the second floor, their cafe is old and basic, with dusty sofas. They do have a wide selection of single origins (duh!) at a reasonable price of 17k. What they lack on the experiential side, they make up on good quality coffee and

passionate baristas. My server told me that not only do they “export” coffee to other coffee houses, Caswell’s Coffee also trains their baristas. He argues that 70 percent of the quality of cuppa is determined by the barista, 20 percent by the beans and 10 percent machine- whether this is true or not, I’ll let you be the judge of that. The downside of this place is that when I was here the Wi-Fi was down and there no sight of a power socket. Another thing, they are open only during office hours (Monday-Saturday), so forget coming by for a late night caffeine fix!

is obvious that the owners of Tokove have a thing for music, so much so that the It setup reminded me of my parents’ old garage which I transformed into an impromptu music studio for band practice. The coffee shop only has three or four tables, and
instead of adding more tables, they went with an open mic (acoustic) stage. For a small venue it does have an abundant menu selection, although the coffee was all I had that night as I already had dinner plans. The Lampung Robusta Latte (25k) I had didn’t have much kick in it, perhaps I should have listened to the waiter who recommended the Toraja Arabica. If sipping coffee with a book at hand is boring for you, then feel free to go up to the stage and sing your heart out or play a rif from “Sweet Child O Mine”. Tokove is located amongst a row of happening “lifestyle” venues so getting a parking spot was rather difficult for me that particular night. Wi-Fi was available and power plugs abound.

As a hotbed for expats, you can bet Kemang offers a myriad of authentic- even gourmet like - cuisines. In this edition, TBJ Kemang has a go at the three month old Mamma Rosy Italian restaurant.

or an establishment in Kemang, Mamma Rosy is quite spacious; the waiter told me that the restaurant used to be an art gallery. The alfresco area is actually quite romantic, but of course being a Jakartan I stay put inside where the aircon is. The setup is intimate minimalist, and the establishment has two separate wings connected by the soon-tobe wine cellar and fabric shop. The kitchen is helmed by none other than Italian Mamma Rosy, and with her son Daniel they whip up authentic flavors of Italy. A chat with Daniel revealed that his grandmother had a restaurant in Italy since 1948, which was then continued by his mom. His father on the other hand has been dealing Italian fabric in Indonesia for over 25 years. Daniel is doing things in between, helping out both the restaurant in Italy and going back and forth to Indonesia dealing fabric for the past decade. Six months ago, Daniel convinced his mom to open up shop in Kemang.

The serving size was just right and the taste was deliciously flavorful, although in my opinion it slightly packed too much punch in the herbs and spices compared to other Italian main dishes I’ve tried elsewhere. Dessert was the star attraction with the Budino Della Nonna (39k) which tastes like caramel flan, where the caramel came with a fragrant twist. Wine is available and of course the list is predominantly Italian. Food was served at a normal pace.
Mamma Rosy is best for those of you who want an authentic Italian experience (recipes date back from 1948!) in a cozy environment. The place is calm and relaxing and the guests are a mix of locals and expats. y wife Gwen was clearly excited by something as she couldn’t sit still. “Julie and Rodney had heard that a new type of restaurant had opened in Kemang. They were told it was a must to try out, and the place was called, of all things, Cowboys. Before you say you don’t want to go out I’ve booked a table. I’m really hoping Dan and Shelly can make it, so I’ve booked for six of us tomorrow night.” Gwen’s right as always I thought to myself. It would be good to try something new; I was getting a bit sick of the same old places in South Jakarta. Then suddenly we were there. To be honest, I hadn’t thought much about what the name Cowboys meant to me. What I could see was certainly more than just a restaurant, it was quite incredible. In front of us was something out of a Hollywood film set – a real town from the Wild West! Even my normally subdued wife was taken aback, “Honey, this is remarkable!” exclaimed Gwen, wide-eyed with amazement. “Oh look the kids are just arriving now.” “Wow, Grandpa, is this where we’re eating dinner? I love it!” shouted my grandson, Dan, as he jumped out of his parent’s car. Shelly, the younger of the two, bounded over to me, jumping up and was hugging me in excitement. Rod and Julie gave their mother and I a peck on the cheek, “Isn’t this great! My friends said they had a great time here last week. The ribs are to die for!” extolled Julie. Rod, always the quiet one, murmured that it was definitely different looking. Let me tell you folks this place is right out of a Western movie. I kept expecting to see a Cowboy on a horse tie up in front of the sheriff's office. But instead of a horse there’s a cowboy fast asleep in front of the jail, one eye and a gun on the outlaws inside. Up on an open balcony another cowboy and a cowgirl are shooting pistols and waving in the air. Am I in Jakarta? Is this for real? A lot of work and wood had gone into creating this very authentic Cowboy-themed saloon. Making sure not to wake the sheriff, we all stepped up onto the porch and walked through half swing doors and into a movie

TBJ: KEMANG set – a full western saloon with solid wooden floors, log cabin walls and ceiling. Immediately we were greeted by a beautiful girl dressed up in leather boots, stetsun hat and uniform – a real cowgirl! She escorted us into a spacious room to the left. Here was a big stone fireplace with all sorts of old things on the mantlepiece, and a stag’s head hanging from the chimney. Pictures of old cowboys and Native Americans adorned the walls. Instead of settling in the cosy fireplace room, we thought we’d have a drink before dinner. The pretty cowgirl suggested we sit at the bar, all the better to take in the whole place. By this point, with my throat parched and my thoughts on a cold beer, I noticed four different beer taps - Bintang, Heineken San Miguel and Carlsberg – what a choice! But what most interesting was that the taps were frozen with ice around them. I said to Rod that this beer must be nice and cold. We ordered our draft beer and I tell you it was a great, nice and cold. Julie and Shelly had milk shakes, made with ice cream, and Gwen sipped a glass of red wine. While we supped, I browsed the dinner menu and found Baby Back Ribs, something I’ve always been partial to. And so that’s just what I ordered. I was not disappointed - they were some of the best I had in a long time. Rod ordered Nachos, as he usually does while Julie and Gwen both had Mediterranean Salads, a low calorie option they said. Of the kids, Dan had the Jesse James Tenderloin Steak, cooked medium rare - exactly as he had ordered – while Shelly had a classic Asian dish, Butter Chicken with Rice. All of us agreed that every dish was truly up to the standards of a five-star hotel. We noticed a band setting up and doing a sound check. Rod said he had heard them play a few times and thought they were pretty good. It was about 7.30pm and the restaurant was rather full in our area when all of a sudden the front area by the entrance started to fill up with a very unique tribe of Indonesians and foreigners. This was a sight to see as all these guests dressed up as Cowboys and Indians poured into the restaurant which, within 30 minutes, was packed like armies ready for battle! Dan told us about the night when the local Harley
Davidson club had their Biker Brotherhood gathering at Cowboys. “There must have been 500 inside and 500 outside. One of the guys estimated there were 750 Harley bikes out front!” The band played country and western music and one of them ‘fiddled’ a banjo which is very rare to see these days. The music was very good and soon I noticed a twinkle in Gwen’s eyes, something I hadn't seen in a while. Next thing a group of ladies were on the floor, line dancing and so Gwen went off and joined the girls. Well folks I wrote this because as a family we have really fallen in love with the place. Since the first time we were here as a family about six weeks ago we have been back five times. Rod is there every Thursday and Friday as they give out free beers during a happy hour until 7pm.I hope you and family and friends try this place out, I am sure you will all get the same buzz and satisfaction the we do. ver 10 years ago, one of Indonesia most senior and finest late sopranos, Pranawingrum Katamsi, initiated an Indonesian classical music recital where she collaborated with her daughter, renowned Indonesian soprano Aning Katamsi together with another famous soprano Binu D. Sukaman. It was one of those special concerts that remain memorable even till now. Seven years after the passing of our beloved ‘Ibu Rum’, her daughter Aning Katamsi decided to continue the legacy by organizing a similar concert, only this time she will collaborate with an uprising soprano Bernadeta Astari from the younger generation.
Before, the program was only Indonesian classical music songs known as seriosa; and my mother made it as a relay to Binu (Sukaman) and I, as the next generation, will preserve Indonesian compositions. On January 8 this year something extraordinary happened. At around 7am GMT the Twittersphere went berserk with the news that a full decade since his last release, 2003’s Reality, David Bowie had popped up out of nowhere with a brand new single.

Apparently Bowie’s idea, “Where are We Now?” was simply dropped on iTunes for fans to discover, with no warning or fanfare preceding the release. The plan worked and it wasn’t long before it got noticed. Just a few frenzied minutes later the news was trending thick and fast, with all sorts of ridiculously premature analysis of the song, which features Bowie forlornly singing about being lost on German public transport. “Bowie’s new song has made me cry!” gushed @ BoyGeorge, while The Guardian’s chief music critic @ AlexisPetridis described “Where are We Now?” as “a beautiful, elegiac ballad.” Eventually, after the single was rather hastily declared “the best thing ever” by just about every music critic with a Twitter account, the rest of The Next Day (Bowie’s 24th studio album) materialized to continued praise and more than a few comparisons to his famous Berlin period – both musically and because the album’s artwork is simply a rehashing of 1977’s Heroes. You’d think after all that time there would be some slow arty lead in or bloated intro but no, there’s a whack of the drums and we’re off, straight into the bouncy clatter of title track “The Next Day” that has distinct overtones of “Suffragette City” woven into its DNA. The sleazy horns and staccato guitars of “Dirty Boys” (and later, ”Boss of Me”) echo the recent David Byrne release Love This Giant, which is certainly no bad thing, and the euphoric pop to doo-wop and back again of “Dancing in Space” is just magic. Not so magic is the frantic (yet naf ) drum’n’bass of “If You Can See Me”, or indeed the vampish Gothic organs on “Love is Lost”. One thing about travelling that I don't like though is jet lag! Forget about time zone differences. I'm talking about different kind of jet lag. I'm talking about the change of scenery which also means that you're placed in an unfamiliar surrounding and schedule. Even though you're staying at the utmost comfortable hotel in the world, I bet it still needs some getting used to. Lacking in sleep with too many things to do contributes to the jet-lagged looking face! Travelling always does this to me. But there are products that we can use to get rid of jet lag to stay looking fresh throughout your journey. Here are five things that work wonders for me in getting rid of the jet-lagged face while travelling.

1. The perfect eye mask - Talika Eye Decompress One thing that I hate so much from lack of sleep is eye bags and dark under eye circles. The horror. I love this product so much because it's convenient - a capsule mask that you drop into the solvent on a different container in the same package - that is tightly packaged for one application. It feels cooling and breezy, you definitely feel fresh immediately after. And gone are the eye bags and slightly better dark under eye circles. 2. Face spray for a quick face freshener - Avene Eau Thermale Spray This is a must have item. I even bring a smaller bottle on board with me. Because once you land and step out of the airplane, the high altitude will cause drying on your face. Spray this Avene Eau Thermale just before you step off the plane, and your face is back to looking fresh in a jiffy. The same thing goes for every time you feel tired and it starts to show on your face. Just spray this to your face and let it dry naturally. It also doubles up as a toner, so you don't need to bring one, and it can be used for areas irritated by the sun or any external factors. 3. Trade moisturizer with beauty oil Beauty oil is the talk of the town at the moment because it's a multipurpose product and the advantages for the skin have been proven. But what I love about it is that it feels lightweight on the skin and it seeps in very fast. It nourishes the skin better than moisturizer when you're tired. But you have to know the trick to use it. Here's
how: spray a bit of face spray like Avene Eau Thermale on your palm (a drop or two) and put several drops (around 3 to 5, according to your preferences) of your beauty oil on top of it and mix it between your palms and warm it up then apply it on your face. The mix of water and oil will immediately nourish your face. My current choice is the Josie MaranArgan Oil or Trilogy Rosehip Oil, both argan and rosehip oil are famously used for the face. 4. Healthy looking glow for the face - BB Cream Just any BB Cream, really. Apply thinly on your face and even the most tired looking face will look dewy and it gives that lit from within glow. I found this to be the greatest antidote for a tired face. It also gives the benefit of sun protection, a little hydration as well as evening out your complexion. My current choice is the Pond's Age Miracle BB Cream that combines the anti-ageing ingredients that also can be found in its skincare line so it feels more hydrating. 5. For a real glow on the face Highlighter Highlighting powder is the secret of making your face look fresh even though you're actually tired. Apply it on the right places, such as the inner corner of your eyes to make you look awake and on the cupid’s bow of the lips. That's the two most important spots to immediately freshen up your makeup. My choice would fall into the famous Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick. With different colours in one block I can also double this up as eye shadows and save me some space in my luggage.

THIS KATE FOUNDATION NEEDS NO POWDER TO SET! by: DesZeLL
I’ve shared with you my experience with Kate Lasting High Coverage Liquid Foundation and you all know how I highly praise it. Too bad that it isn’t available anymore, but you can still get it at Adam Beauty, while stock lasts. It’s been my Holy Grail (HG) foundation since forever and I thought I was going to mourn this product being discontinued. When I looked up on Kate’s website www.nomorerules.net, apparently they’ve got a new foundation version. As I reported here, I can’t resist getting myself a bottle of Kate Powderless Liquid for Cover foundation. Powderless you ask? Yep, that’s right. My assumption once I read the word powderless is that once you apply it, you will not need any powder to set it up – which is a normal thing to do once you’ve applied your foundation so that it will stay put all day and not be slippery nor patchy. But first things first, the formula and texture. Formula is liquid and somewhat thicker than Kate Lasting High Coverage Liquid Foundation but just like its predecessor the texture is so heavenly that it’s so easy to apply. I was afraid that it was going to set on my face quite fast, like any cream to powder foundation, that I ended up with a high coverage foundation. For the coverage it’s leaning toward light medium coverage, where my acne scars get minimum coverage. I apply it using a foundation brush – any foundation brush that I’ve mentioned here will do. I wait for couple of minutes where eventually after I finished applying my eye makeup the foundation dries out from a slightly dewy feel to a nice velvety finish. Unlike its predecessor, the finish has no dewy look to it at all but I still love how Japanese foundation is able to

give so little coverage yet it transforms your skin to a flawless complexion. I use no powder afterwards, only brushing my powder brush allover my face to give it a nice finishing touch. I paired it up with both silicone base primer and hydrating primer, and on my dry skin it seemed that the lasting power is quite alright. Of course on silicone base primer it feels like it has a better hold of the foundation, but most of the hydrating primer has that dewy and pearly effect that gives the foundation a little shimmer. So it’s entirely up to you. I took this foundation for a test during my Pilates day, where at 6pm I had a one hour Pilates session and when I looked up in the mirror I don’t look like a clown though I’ve been sweating like a pig during the session. I’m extremely impressed! I blotted my face and the foundation was still there, though not as made up as it was in the morning. Since I had a fashion show to attend afterward, what I did was I piled up a bit of foundation on my cheeks, under eyes and nose area. The result was not patchy at all and it doesn’t crack! More impressed! So the final verdict is, if you can get this product, you should! In Japan it should retail for below 150k. Fret not, you could also buy it online at Adam Beauty for USD $19. Even at that price, it’s still worth every penny! By far, it is one of the best foundations I’ve ever tried. Oh, it’s also available at drugstores across Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

That day, my fellow friends from other media and I tried to recreate a look from Maybelline’s new microsite, Style Central Indonesia. After trying almost every single product, the one that stood out to be my new love was definitely the Maybelline Hypersharp Liner. I personally love liquid liners in this form, like a marker if you know what I mean. It might take a little time to practice, but you’ll get the hang of it after several times of using it. Since it comes with a precise tip (0.05mm brush) it’s perfect to fill in the gaps between our lashes. Maybe for some this is too small, too thin, but it’s perfect if you want to make a sharp line or create a sharp wing that will make your eyes stand out. The good thing about this product is you can play and create a fun eyeliner shape, or even a simple one. I’ve been wearing this to create a simple thin liner every single day since and I love how it works! I still have to wait for a few minutes before it all sets. I tried to use it on my waterline but it smudged a little bit after a few hours. Other than that, I love this liner. I just have to avoid to line my waterline and tightline with this one if I want a total smudge- free and just focus on filling the gaps between my lashes. That is enough for me. And you have to be careful and try not to drop it because the brush is so thin. Maybelline Hypersharp Liner retails for 69k, an affordable product and in my opinion worth every penny.

I, on the other hand, could’ve sworn that I heard angels singing when I tasted the Filetto Con Porcini E Vino Rosso (308k)! The wonderful Australian Black Angus tenderloin was cooked with Italian herbs and Porcini Italian mushroom, served with toasted bread, and doused with red wine sauce. I guess this is how a perfect steak should be. The texture is wonderful, the taste magnificent. The meat, the sauce, and the sides created a marvelous mélange of tastes. A definite must have! After all that, we still managed to find some room for dessert or Dolci. And we picked the Semifreddo Al Caffe (25k); semi frozen ice cream and coffee pudding served with hot espresso, and the Torta Di Mele Alla Canella (29k); apple and cinnamon cake served with vanilla sauce and toasted almonds. A perfect coda to end our meal. All in all, our Italian experience at Toscana was simply sublime. Next time, we’ll try the wood-fired pizza selection (As if we needed an incentive to come back). Oh, and the extensive wine selection, too. The Super Tuscan Wine is just one of the excellent choices to accompany your meal. With exquisite dishes and efficient service, it’s no mystery why regulars keep coming back for more. It is authentic, classic Italian cuisine, made with imported premium ingredients; a combination that is hard to beat. Toscana is the place for you to indulge yourself and your loved one/s, where you can expect only the best. Whatever you’re having here, it’ll be money well spent. pened on March 1 this year, Bistronomy is an unpretentious but still quite high end dining destination in the south of the city. The concept is quite unique; Bistronomy combines fine dining with a bistro ambiance.

Inside or outside, the place is gorgeous. So gorgeous in fact, that when the three finalists of Asia’s Next Top Model were in Jakarta recently, they picked Bistronomy as the setting for their photo shoot. That should whet the appetite of Jakarta’s fashionistas.
The setting is certainly impressive. The interior has a vintage look with a heavy dose of ‘glam chic’, but without a stuffy feel. In fact, it is quite homey here; just like an old house that your hypothetical well-heeled and glamorous grandmother left you.
Speaking of appetite, the kitchen staff is headed by three Japanese chefs with vast international experiences. Although the food is leaning more towards French, they put some Asian touches here and there, and that’s what makes the food special.
But the more striking parts of the restaurant are actually outside. The front garden and patio is reminiscent of a summer villa in the South of France, and if you look at the ‘hidden alley’ at the back, you can picture yourself in a cute

FOOD The Tuna Tartar (60k) was one of our starters; a tasty blend of tuna, avocado, scallion, fish roe, and spicy mayonnaise. The other appetizer was the Edamame Vichyssoise (30k); a special cold soup made with green soy beans. Both are excellent. For the main course, we picked a couple of delicious dishes that’ll bring out your inner carnivore. The Grilled Lamb Chop with Honey Mustard Sauce (150k) was brilliant; Australian lamb chops on a bed of potato gratin, with sautéed vegetables on the side. Made with genuine French mustard, the sauce blended well with the meat. The Wagyu Cheese Burger (95k) in another popular choice for guests; luscious wagyu beef patty with cheddar cheese, a combo of potato and sweet potato homemade fries, and mixed vegetables. Another outstanding creation at Bistronomy is the Olive Oil Salmon Confit (120k); silky smooth Norwegian salmon trout, juxtaposing nicely with the wonderful tangy salsa, avocado puree, and zucchini. This dish is a feast for the eyes as well for the taste. Well recommended.
The Asian section like the Thai Green Curry (80k),Trio de Yakitori (120k), or the Nasi Goreng Kambing (80k), is also worth trying for. If there’s one dessert that you have room for, make sure it’s the magnificent Rare Mango Pudding (55k). It is simply sublime! As for drinks, the refreshing Fresh Ambula Juice (30k) is a wildly popular choice here. While the Frozen Piñacolada (90k) and other wonderful cocktails will certainly make your day.
