Next time you see 25% tax on a bill ask for a clear definition of what it is from the manager - it could be someone trying to pull the import tax wool over your eyes, nothing more. SCOOP Heineken Green Room Heineken presents an audio-visual experiment for clubbers called the Heineken Green Room - Original Sound Experiment, in collaboration with some of Indonesia’s biggest DJs, such as Dipha Barus, Yasmin, Riri, Mahesa, and Tiara Eve. The theme of the Heineken Green Room is “Can You See Music?” which is a collaboration between EDM and advanced visuals. The idea of the event is to enable people to ‘visualize’ the music being heard.In this experiment, the DJ and consumers can connect with a highly advanced giant ball called “The Orb” which will be the center of a spectacular visual and interactive performance.Through the Heineken Green Room mobile app, consumers can interact with The Orb, including uploading selfies that will be displayed on The Orb, monitors and reports the energy expended by partygoers after an event, and dance contests between consumers against the The Orb. First held in August, the Heineken Green Room will go on tour across Indonesia, visiting Bandung, Medan, Surabaya, Samarinda, Bali and Bogor with the peak event set to be held in Colloseum, Jakarta on October 10.

Jak Japan Matsuri 2015 In an attempt to better foster cultural ties between Indonesia and Japan, the “Jak-Japan Matsuri” was first held in 2008, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.The annual event is held in partnership between the Japanese embassy and the Jakarta government. This year’s Jak-Japan Matsuri event will be held from September 6 to 13 at Plaza Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan. This year’s theme is “Indonesia-Japan, in Dream Team”. The event will present various traditional and modern cultures of both Japan and Indonesia, including photography expo, dances, anime, Manga, cosplay, and also Indonesian and Japanese culinary options.

Jakarta Comic Con The world-renowned annual multi-genre entertainment and comic convention, Comic Con, is ready to be held for the first time in Jakarta this September 25 to 27, at the JI Expo Kemayoran. Jakarta Comic Con will feature various pop culture attractions; from the best in movies and TV series, to animation, comics, cartoons, toys, video games, collectibles, and live stage activities. Jakarta Comic Con will join forces with the Anime Festival Asia (AFA) Indonesia- the biggest Anime event outside of Japan– creating a massive event appealing to all ages and demographics. ikey Moran has been DJing around all parts of Indonesia, Asia and America for the past eleven years and recently hit even more limelight with his GO-JEK company suddenly becoming the shining light of modern commerce in this land in need of some inspiration. Born in Jakarta, the 34-year-old co-founder and brand director of Go-Jek - the motorcycle taxi/courier company, renowned DJ and all-round nice guy had a quick chat with The Beat about his Jakarta and Bali worlds.

Mr Mikey Moran How do you combine work and play nowadays that you are a Go-Jek entrepreneur and top Indonesian DJ? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really all about time management... Since working fulltime in Go-Jek as of last year, life has been a complete rollercoaster. A lot of sacrifices have been made not to take certain gigs because your priorities have shifted. I think however being 11 years into DJing, I felt I have already fulfilled my dreams of going international and opening for big names like Far East Movement, Neyo, Swedish House Mafia, Gorillaz, Mos Def and many more. Now I guess there is now a sort of a 180 turn on not having to hustle as much and/or taking every single gig offered. Being older, I have to balance my life and health, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely important. And the fact that Go-Jek has now become a bigger priority over taking gigs. Can I get personal? Love life and stuff? Are you single? Yes single and ready to mingle.

FEATURE So you must be hot property in bachelor circles nowadays, how do you sort that out, do you do much dating? Lol. First it was DJing,and now that Go-Jek has blown up you become a bit of a celebrity from people just knowing you work for Go-Jek. Even our drivers and staff are getting that limelight. I usually don’t like to disclose any of this info though, I let people find out for themselves. It’s more interesting that way. Where would you take a gal on a date? I’m sort of a classic man. Dinner and movie date. I love food and movies so I keep it simple. But sometimes it’s fun to do something outta the ordinary. Like check out new spots around the city, rooftop bars, exhibitions, events. It’s nice to just venture out a little, gets you to know the person better. So what’s your favorite style of gig to spin at? In Jakarta. EDM rules all, but I’m over it. I started DJing because I loved playing the music I liked and my friends supported me on that. With EDM, my friends are not too keen. I love hip hop ‘cause it’s soulful, and peeps put their soul into dancing to it. But my fave is definitely deep/tech house. My last few mixes are of that genre, but it’s hard to play that in Jakarta ‘cause it’s not widely accepted by the Jakarta scene yet. Have you been playing any deep house gigs? In Bali I play a lot of deep house and now in the next two weeks I have two gigs playing deep house in Jakarta and during September I’m playing in the F1 Singapore in that genre as well. Super pumped! Where do you think are the best nights out in Jakarta and Bali? And why? My favorite party of the year is the Ku De Ta Bikini Party. It always falls on my birthday or on the week of it, so it’s an awesome place to celebrate. Just good vibes, music and peeps. I like the Straw Hut parties, loving the Cocoon Splash and Bounce parties and Jenja overall

on hip hop nights and the weekends. As for Jakarta, Jakarta Warehouse Project, my Trigger Production parties, The Joint, Peaches and Cream, and Skye Lounge Sunday parties. They are all dope because people are really into the music and go there for the music. From a DJs perspective, it’s so fulfilling. What’s your usual day like nowadays? What time do you get up? Hmm. Get up usually around 8ish. Make some breakfast if I have the groceries. Get to the office around 9.30/10. And then it’s usually a day of meetings and answering a ton of emails, messages and phone calls concerning Go-Jek. I just built a new web division for Go-Jek which I’m excited about. Leave work around 6/7. Then head home and go to the gym, play some basketball, do some running, then dinner. At night I usually just relax, download tracks or watch some TV. Gotta love the TV shows out there nowadays. What are your favorites? Game of Thrones (of course), Banshee, Mr Robot, House of Cards, Silicon Valley, Breaking Bad, Daredevil, Empire, Fargo, Person of Interest, True Detective (season 1 only). Man, there are so many... n intensifying drought caused by the El Niño weather condition, the Rupiah plunging to new depths with each passing day, the Jakarta Composite Index falling by 20 percent since the beginning of the year (and by 4 percent in one day). This is not a description of Indonesia as it lived through Krismon (the monetary crisis) in 1997/98, or the 2007/8 world economic collapse, but a summary of what the nation is currently experiencing. The Indonesian economy has been showing signs of structural weakness since the start of 2015 and this seems to have combined with growing unease about the world economy, triggered by worries that China is heading for a “hard landing” after 10 years or more of unprecedented, double-digit economic growth. The result is that the rupiah dropped below an exchange rate of Rp 14,000 to the US dollar by late August and might well be lower by the time you read this article in early September. Indonesia avoided the worst of the 2007/8 collapse mainly due to the size and strength of its domestic market but it cannot repeat that feat this time round, given the huge impact of China’s economy throughout East and Southeast Asia. Combine this with oil recently dropping below US$40 per barrel (a six-year low) and Indonesia, a net importer but an oil producer nonetheless, seems to have been caught up in a “perfect” economic storm from which there is no easy escape. Meanwhile, the government seems unable to do much more than wring its hands and watch the gathering storm from the side lines. The first anniversary of the Jokowi administration is little more than a month away, but its sluggishness in spending on infrastructure projects, which would help to boost local economies, has dragged down market confidence.

Pop-Up Markets A growing trend of pop-up markets and bazaars is taking the city by storm. Darren Dylan

or many local Jakartans, going to the shopping mall is a must. However, the allure of the shopping mall for some is simply because there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t any entertainment destination options available. The air-conditioned malls are clearly favored over the hot and humid (and limited number of) green open-field parks in town. Worse, the 170 malls in Jakarta often carry similar brands and offerings, as if each one is a carbon-copy of the other. As there is a pressing need for alternative shopping (and eating) activities aside from whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

available in the shopping malls, pop-up markets have grown in their appeal. The pop-up market trend started around five years ago, where pop-up market event organizers gather several independent apparel, accessories, and food and beverage vendors within a venue (exhibition halls or shopping mall atriums) that usually last for a few days. The allure of pop-up markets is that it opens up alternative independent brandsmainly clothing and food and beverage- to a wide and curious audience. Pop-up market event organizers include Brightspot Market, Encore Bazaar, I Love Bazaar Jakarta, Hype Festival,

FEATURE and Market and Museum, of which blast their upcoming events mainly through their social media, especially Facebook and Instagram. Tenants of these bazaars usually already have an online presence, and they would rent Rp4-8 million booths for a bazaar that would last for a few days. One event organizer claims that within three days 150 brands/tenants served over 70 thousand visitors. These bazaars have also been a launchpad for several brands to take their retail business to the next level, with some brands successfully establishing solid retail outlets around town. Although all pop-up markets look similar, it becomes apparent that each one serves a main particular niche. Take Encore Bazaar for example, it goes after the young mothers with children market, visible from the fashion offerings mainly for toddlers and ladies, and within their bazaar a kids activity center will be made available. Some other event organizers have a priority for culinary, with rows of food stalls and food trucks all neatly lined up. The Beat Jakarta visited several pop-up markets held in the past few months and found that the ambiance of these bazaars are similar to that of a visiting carnival. Cute products and tempting food options are simply hard to resist, with the entrepreneurs themselves usually directly selling their products without the help of paid employees. Unfortunately there are times when it was apparent that vendors don’t understand that they had to be on their best game, from receiving a customer’s order, to handling the

order and maintaining the attractive nature of their booth throughout the whole day. Some would be good with dealing customers but lousy in product presentation, and vice versa. However plenty of (veteran) vendors understand that by the end of the day it is the service industry, and having a good product is not enough as it must be bundled with stellar customer service. Competition is tough for the vendors, where in some cases one booth would have a long line of customers while the one next to it is barely having any visitors. An event organizer told The Beat Jakarta that he’s seen his fair share of ‘onehit wonders’ and that’s not the type of vendors they are after. Instead, both event organizers and the customers are looking for vendors who are in it for the long run, who want to take their business seriously and not just about making a few bucks over the course of a few days. Over 70% of tenants are independent brands, with the remainder being established retail companies wanting a piece of the action. t just 23 years old, Alessandro Lindblad, better known as Alesso, has arrived. The Swede is currently one of the hottest DJs in the world, headlining sell out festivals across the globe. This month alone he will be rocking Ultra Bali and two days later, Invasion in Jakarta. And it’s not just about his current globe-trotting status that’s impressive, it has more to do with that rapid rise to stardom.

His first professional encounter with electronic music was in 2010, when he released his “Alesso” EP. It was this track that caught the attention of Sebastian Ingrosso, a member of the Swedish House Mafia trio, which was arguably the biggest thing in electronic music at the time. By the following year Sebastian Ingrosso and Alesso produced a track together called “Calling” which peaked number two on the Beatport charts. “Everyone needs someone at the beginning of their career to help guide them,” he says of Ingrosso in an interview with Billboard. “But he was never involved in my production. He didn’t steer my sound at all. And that’s the best thing he ever did because I didn’t want to be steered. I wanted

someone to be like a big brother, saying, ‘Do your thing, man -- I’m right behind you if anything crazy happens.’ It became apparent of how he was going to rise within the ranks of the electronic music scene when he debuted DJ Magazine’s list of the top 100 DJs at number 70 that same year- a feat any DJ could only dream of. Soon MTV dubbed him as “EDM Rookies to Watch in 2012”. His life of producing smash-hit tracks and touring the globe was soon on its way. It was in 2012 when he first played for a crowd of 60,000 at Creamfields, and accompanied Madonna on her MDNA World Tour. Currently number 15 DJ Magazine’s top 100 DJs, to date he is a fixture in all the major electronic music festivals in the four corners of the world.

Writing this column for several years now on all the preview of all upcoming classical music performances in Jakarta, I realized that few organizations have been improving their music program to attracts a bigger audience. One of the best examples in this case is none other then Aula Simfonia Jakarta. Starting as a church based concert series, Aula Simfonia Jakarta monthly concert was usually packed only with a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heavenly musicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; program such as Haydn, Bach and Beethoven. Nevertheless for the last year till now, I have seen the changes in their program where other composers and types of classical music are being performed. Going to this autumn season, Aula Simfonia Jakarta is going to present

us with a more melodramatic tunes coming from Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Grieg. The similarity of Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Grieg is the fact that they are all part of the neoclassicism composers. In music, neoclassicism was a twentieth-century trend, particularly current in the period between the two world wars, in which composers sought to return to aesthetic precepts associated with the broad concept of ‘classicism’. The neoclassical impulse found its expression in such features as the use of pared-down performing forces, an emphasis rhythm and on contrapuntal texture, an updated or expanded tonal harmony, and a concentration on absolute music as opposed to romantic program music. In form and thematic technique, neoclassical music often drew inspiration from music of the 18th century. Prokofiev Piano Concerto no. 3 in C major that Aula Simfonia Jakarta chose for this concert is a fine example of showing the 18th century music inspiration where the theme is taken from the eternal love story of Romeo and Juliet. Young and talented pianist Indah Lestari Hertanto who graduated from Towson University, USA, is trusted to perform the solo part in this concerto. Known for her eloquent playing, Indah also recognize for her liking to neoclassic piano composition. Aula Simfonia Jakarta also continues furthermore with the Romeo and Juliet theme by choosing Tchaikovsky’s renowned Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. As an orchestral work, this piece is styled in an overture fantasy and it is deeply inspired by Shakespeare’s play. The last piece that is on the program for this concert comes from Grieg’s most famous piece called Peer Gynt, an incidental music to Henrik Ibsen’s 1867 play of the same name. An illustrious composition that has inspired many movies to even Disney, Aula Simfonia Jakarta decide to only perform the second suite of Peer Gynt. Expect to hear some popular tunes from this suite including Solveig’s Song.

The way I see it, Aula Simfonia Jakarta is improving their classical music taste by far and it is exciting to see what they will bring for coming months. On the lighter note, Ananda Sukarlan is back with my favorite soprano from Surabaya Evelyn Merrelita to team up with Rudi Fernandez, a Peruvian baritone to perform on a concert commemorating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Peru and Indonesia. It is definitely something not to be missed! The Chemical Brothers Born in the Echoes

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Two decades after their groundbreaking, genre-splicing debut Exit Planet Dust, and Tom Rowlands and Ed Simon have run into a bit of a problem. Back in the 90s when dance music was expanding into all sorts of creative directions, the possibilities seemed limitless for the Chemical Brothers, who, along with peers Underworld and Leftfield excelled in making music that could be described as the thinking man’s electronica. Talented, ahead of their time even, Rowlands and Simon were arguably the first to court indie and alternative rock, throwing collaborations with people like Noel Gallagher into the mix on the phenomenal “Setting Sun”.

That’s not to say Born in the Echoes is boring though. Far from it. The album fizzes with energy – particularly on second single “Go”, where an on-form Q-Tip provides a breathless vocal flow over 100-mile-an-hour breaks. The unsettling “Under Neon Lights” features a chilling turn from art-rocker St. Vincent, and album closer “Wide Open” shifts the tempo nicely thanks to its warm synths and layered vocals from Beck. Perhaps the most interesting of all though, is the bizarre “A Taste of Honey”, with it’s trip hop leanings and sinister sound effects, all strung together with what sounds like a stoned bumble bee buzzing around in the speakers.

Here they are then, 20 years later, with an eighth album that despite its top-notch production and generous sprinkling of party-starting bangers, could have easily been recorded back in their 90s heyday. The 2010s further marked a distinct (and welcome) change in direction for the Chems, as they ditched the guest collaborators in search of something darker and more personal. Unfortunately, Born in the Echoes feels like a bit of a backwards step, with its (admittedly impressive) guest line up and return to mass appeal beats.

Ultimately, the lack of coherence and mix of loud, clubby songs vs. experimental slowburners means that Born in the Echoes doesn’t really work as an album, and feels more like two different concept EPs carelessly mixed together. Taken on their own though, there is still plenty to enjoy from each track, but above all, it’s just good to see Rowlands and Simon still out there, keeping the party going after all this time. Warung Turki opened officially last weekend with family and friends of the owners, Sezai and Yanti Zorlu attending the new restaurant in Kemang to join in the fun. Belly dancers and Turkish music were jazzing up proceedings while fine wines and cocktails, a great selection of Turkish foods from the menu made their rounds amongst the invited guests in white. Sezai explained that the dishes at this Warung came from his childhood memories and his motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kitchen. Warung T ur k i A year ago we visited Sezai and Yanti Zorlu in their stunning establishment called Turkuaz. They are now back to surprise us more with their latest creation, Warung Turki. Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Jakarta’s busy Kemang, Warung Turki offers a rather humble menu that comes Sezai’s childhood memories. Growing up in Iskenderun on the eastern Mediterranean coast, Sezai and his brothers lived a life where fresh bread was made from scratch and olive trees grew in their garden. It was those traditional hearty dishes, cooked

every day by his mother, that inspired Sezai to open his second establishment in Jakarta, a place which embodies the Zorlu’s homemade culture. Unlike the gourmet selection that we find in Turkuaz, Warung Turki offers an array of breadbased dishes called pide, and cooked meals such as chicken rice. With fresh dough that is made to order, Warung Turki also has a big wood-fired oven that showcases the making of the pide. A typical Turkish flatbread that is traditionally prepared during Ramadhan, pide is

usually combined with various toppings; one of my personal favourite pides combines spinach, egg and cheese, which is like having an exotic pizza sensation with a very soft bread. Another highlight is called lahmacun, which is a round flat-bread covered with marinated minced meat and served with mint leaves, a squeeze of lemon and tomato slices. I couldn’t help thinking about the similarities with Italian pizza, which is understandable since it also originates from the Mediterranean coast, except that this one has a more exotic taste with all the spices in the marinade. On the grill side, I was very impressed with their lamb, which is succulent and tasty to the last bite. However, if you are looking for a cooked dish experience then the testi kebabi is a must! This slow-cooked lamb kebab takes four hours to cook inside the wood oven in a clay pot. Served with butter rice, you can inhale the aroma as the waiter pours the kebab into your bowl. It is such an amazing experience. Warung Turki’s impression lies not only in its food but also in the great atmosphere that is created by Nada Lahlou’s design. As the interior designer of both Turkuaz and Cortado, Nada has once again impressed with her meticulous concept of showing a different side of Turkish culture, and in this 3.5-storey building, Nada has created varying concepts of design. On the ground floor you can see the gigantic oven and

a showcase area featuring various Turkish food products, and with its small dining area, this whole floor reminds one of a scene in a Turkish town square. The main dining room is on the first floor, where a semi-private room is located in a half mezzanine floor. However, the most unique area in Warung Turki actually lies on the second floor, where Nada has created an outdoor experience indoors. Open from 5pm, this space is decorated with a brick floor, big trees with exotic Turkish lanterns, all under a skylight rooftop. It is without a doubt the most unique setting that makes you want to linger while having a double mint shisha. The Zorlus have once again successfully excited our taste buds with homemade Turkish dishes in Warung Turki. It is a type of place that makes you want to come over and over again. GYROS ALLEY Gear up for gyros and other delicious Greek grub.

reece may be in deep distress at the moment, but thank the gods there’s still a place where you can find delicious Greek food in Jakarta. Opened this past July, Gyros Alley is a medium-sized two-story restaurant that occupies the former site of Coffeebeerian on Jalan Panglima Polim, near Apotik Jaya. It’s a labor of love for chef/owner Dina Fattia. She got hooked on the whole Greek food scene during her culinary studies in Melbourne, Australia. Nice touches of Greece are everywhere. There are a couple of cool murals here, one on each floor. And framed pictures of typical scenes from the country added a homey vibe. The Falafel (42k) got us to a good start. Although not originally Greek per se, these delicious fried balls of chickpeas have become a Mediterranean favorite. The dish is served with some Tzatziki sauce; a tangy mix of yoghurt, cucumber, and garlic, which is commonly used in Greek dishes. The Greek Salad (50k) is of course always a sure bet; lettuces, onion, olive, cucumber, tomato, feta cheese, and served with lemon thyme dressing. Next up was the Spanakopita (42k); a combo of spinach and feta cheese wrapped in crispy triangles. But if you want a bit more spectacle for your appetizer, try the Flaming Saganaki (55k). It’s a Greek-style battered, fried cheese in a small cooking pan, served with syrups and lemon, added with a bit of liquor and then lit for a bit of ‘drama’! Gyros Alley’s main dishes are the flavorsome Gyros; these are tender lamb or chicken meats that have been marinated for 42 hours in horizontally spit roast, and grilled to perfection.

FOOD We tried the Chicken Gyros Platter (58k); a platter of roast chicken, served with Tzatziki sauce, Greek salad, and some pita bread. For a more handheld deliciousness, the Lamb Gyros Souvlaki (62k) is a great pick; the well-marinated lamb is wrapped in homemade pita bread, along with Tzatziki sauce, tomato, and onions. Should you feel like having rice, try the Mediterranean Lamb Fried Rice (58k); Mediterranean-style rice pilaf tossed with Mediterranean herbs and spices, topped with some tasty lamb. These dishes can also be ordered vegetarian-style, with falafel replacing the meat. For dessert, the wonderful Baklava (35k) is great, as is the sinfully scrumptious Peanut Butter Chocolate Marble (35k). As for beverages, there are plenty of unique choices. The Lavender Earl Grey Tea (30k) is as soothing as it sounds. The bottled healthy juice mixes (35k) are also nice. But do try the Homemade Kefir Lassies, like the Mixed Berries Kefir Lassi or Mango Kefir Lassi (35k each). The lassies are made of cultured fermented milk, rich with enzyme and friendly micro-organisms that help balance your inner ecosystem. A refreshing and healthy coda to your meal. is a restaurant located in the Panin Building, nicely placed right on the corner of Senayan and Sudirman. The location may be familiar to some of you as the former site of Aria, or even before that, Tony Roma’s. It opened a little more than a year ago, with a menu that is heavy on Thai and Italian dishes. Yep, you read it right. Thai AND Italian. You might think, how can a restaurant do two distinctly different and uniquely delicious types of food equally good? The answer is yes! More on this a bit later. Locanda, which means ‘inn’ in Italian, has a very cozy vibe about it. The interior looks like a nice juxtaposition of styles, with each side of the restaurant having a unique design.

There might be a corner that can cater to your mood-of-the-moment; a romantic spot here, a lively mural there, and so on. Locanda also has four private rooms that are ready for a more intimate group gathering, or a good place for an informal business meeting. We were at the restaurant on a recent hot day, and we just couldn’t resist the temptation of a cold, fizzy mocktail concoction. In fact, we tried two of them that are so refreshing on such a day. Or any time. The fresh sensation of mixed berries and zesty lemon come together in the Berry Lemonade (40k). And for a little more kick, try the Locanda Twister (40k); fresh mint leaves, lime, brown sugar, ginger ale, and a slice of ginger.

Now on to the food. We began our meal with a little something on the Italian side of the menu. The Pan Fried Giant Scallops (110k) is a perfect starter; succulent scallops on a bed of spinach, with some balsamic reduction, and topped with crispy ham. Love it! Next up, we traveled to Thailand with the ohso-pleasing Pla Bu Peksa (250k) or steamed sunhock fish in sweet and sour soup. And we swam back to the Western menu with the Seafood Mixed Grill (225k); a great mix of salmon, sea bass, prawn, and lobster, served with hollandaise sauce and side salad. Both are definite must-tries!

As for dessert, the Thai cassava cake with coconut milk called Manciam (50k) has a very comforting, familiar taste. But should you want to indulge your sweet cravings, we suggest the Trio Crème Brûlée (55k). This is a divine threein-one dessert with mango, coffee, and Oreo crème brûlée and brandy schnapps. A ‘new’ place for Pan-Asian delights at Senopati.

change can do you good. Yes, sometimes even a slight alteration can bring a fresh start to an eatery. Publico was a Western restaurant with a 1920s vibe located on the bustling foodie thoroughfare that is Jalan Senopati. But recently, a ‘lady’ seemed to take over the place and her name is Miss Choo. The former spot of Publico’s has now become Ms. Choo Brasserie and Bar, a restaurant serving Pan-Asian comfort food. The interior retains the look of the former restaurant, but added nice little touches here and there to give a more Asian atmosphere. The eclectic mix of imperial Chinese porcelains and 1920s Art Deco is certainly an interesting one. Maybe think about Hong Kong in the early 20th century, when the British colonized the place during the beginning of its economic boom. The food here is excellent, from starter to dessert. We started our meal with the scrumptious Soft Shell Crab Salad (55k); mixed greens, pomelo, onions, cashews and green mango with a special nuoc cham dressing. A definite must-try! The Deep Fried Prawn and Almond Balls (48k) were big and flavorful, and the Sriracha aioli dip provides a perfect accompaniment. We then moved on to the main course, and our first pick was the Crispy Duck Dry Red Curry (85k) which is a great explosion of taste! The tasty curry is mixed with Thai basil, baby corn, kefir lime, and even some tang from lychees! But the moist duck just brought it all together.

FOOD We also opted for the Fried Barramundi Fillet (85k), which is topped with coriander, scallions, and chili, sitting in a pool of wonderful, tasty sauce. The menu is full of other delectable Asian dishes to try. And one more thing, if you are a person of the pork persuasion, there are plenty of dishes to whet your appetite. Continuing on to the dessert, you’ll see some interesting creations which Asian blends and European influences. Try the Fried Hazelnut Nutella Sesame Balls (40k) which are basically Onde-Onde’s with Nutella filling. And the Vanilla Pandan Panacotta (40k) which is a mixed salted gula Malaka and coconut Chantilly, easily reminding you of a Cendol dessert with a Euro look. The bar also whipped up some cool creations. Mocktails like the Cucumber Lemongrass Lemonade, Sparkling Sour Plum, or Passionfruit Cooler (35k each) are very revitalizing. And the signature cocktails are just superb. We love the Chrysanthemum Old Fashioned (65k), the Cinnamon Whisky Sour (65k), and the Lavender Negroni (70k). Nice prices on them, too! The Asian-inspired Ms. Choo is a welcomed change for the Senopati/Gunawarman area, which houses plenty of Western-style eateries.
