Is Run Fun? the new

Darren Dylan

T

here was a time when running was a form of punishment for high schoolers that need to be reprimanded. The number of laps a punished kid had to endure around the football field depended on the severity of his misdemeanor. Today running, be it 5km, 10km, 15km or a marathon, is the new cool thing to do. It was 2013 that marked the dawn of running, as it replaced the fixed gear bicycle (fixie) trend. Running events are professionally organised, be it in a Jakarta suburb or during the Sunday Car Free Day in downtown Jakarta. Running events are held at any time of the day: at the crack of dawn, scorching mid-day, even nights run have been held. When the running trend began it was more about the sport and its competitive nature. It was all about crossing the finish line and wearing the medal. After a run, participants would proudly wear their medal into a mall or a Starbucks- after all their sweat was gone that is. Since last year running became a new form of entertainment for Jakartans, or better known as “Sportainment”. Now it’s not just about the destination (medal), but also the journey. Some of the theme runs include the Strawberry Fun Run, Foam Festival 5K Run, Run to 80s, and get this: the Jakarta Wine and Cheese Run. While last month saw over 10 runs in the Greater Jakarta area alone, mid this month marks the beginning of fasting month (Ramadhan) so it’s safe to say there won’t be many running events. The last biggest run event set to take place before Ramadhan is the Electro Run on June 6. Organised by the party people of Ismaya, the Electro Run will see over 11 thousand ‘glowing’ runners light the streets of Ancol with glow sticks, LED wristbands, and glow in the dark glasses. At the end

of the race, runners will be treated by nothing less than a rave. Thats right. An open-air DJ Performance after a run. Astrid, a local Jakartan in her early 30s, said she first took up running last year after being inspired during a Christmas dinner at a friends house. Instead of the typical angelic Christmas tree ornaments, her friend’s tree was adorned by running medals that she had gathered throughout the year. And Astrid said to herself: “I want that!” She went on to explain that not all run events are created equal, so its key to read various online running forums to understand an organiser’s past experience. One time Astrid participated in a run event and they ran out of medals at the finish line. Despite the promise from officials to “mail the medal to their address” runners went berserk. “It was really about that crowning moment, after all the effort we put to reach the finish line... we demanded the medals,” Astrid said. “There are other details that some inexperienced organisers miss, as simple as providing enough drinking stations, a light but healthy treat prior the race like a banana, and runner and traffic management.” One community that has played a significant role in developing the run culture in Indonesia is Indorunners. Currently with over 27 thousand Twitter followers, Indorunners have members from various cities in Indonesia and the discussions they have on their online forum, amongst others they talk about the various good and not-so-good of running events. The community also hold weekly runs called the Thursday Night Run and Sunday Morning Run which is open for everyone to join. Whether these running events will be just a fad or here to stay, we won’t know for sure. However, TBJ is glad to see more entertainment options in the city, all the while breaking a sweat. www.beatmag.com

FEATURE In today’s day and age, electronic dance music is at the forefront of entertainment. The Netherlands is fighting for 1st place along with Germany, Spain and the UK to be the main hub of everything party related. Techno is currently the main sound being distributed from speakers all across Europe and has actually been booming since the early 80s. Ravers from across the world regularly head to party destinations like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht to get their fix of 4/4 beats abetted by hard hitting hi-hats and deep bouncy baselines. To many people in Europe, techno is the most sophisticated form of electronic music. Its steady beat at 128 bpm (or more) gives off a fast paced yet spacious feeling that helps you hear each and every individual sound that comes out of each track. In the Netherlands, particularly Rotterdam, the techno scene is more than packed every weekend - whilst the throbbing beat plays to filled bunkers of people, the electric atmosphere never dies down. You might be thinking to yourself; damn, sounds hectic. And you should. A night out in Rotterdam clubs Toffler, Perron, Voodoo and Masillo is a more than hectic night out for the feint of heart. That being said, it is definitely not an unsafe environment. In fact, you would be safer in one of these clubs than on the streets on the weekend. To put a picture in your head of what these places are really like. Toffler is an abandoned metro station. The moment you walk in you can hear the filtered heavy kick in the background. As you head to the lockers, unfamiliar faces will be dancing, greeting and heavily getting into the groove. The tunnel like dance floor is

specially developed for the hard core ravers to head to the front and for the chillers to chill out on the couches on the sides or in the smoking rooms. Names like Chris Liebing, Nina Kraviz, Seth Troxler, Loco Dice, Marco Carola, Nic Fanciulli, Hot Since 82 and Adam Beyer are all names that have been seated in the dynamic DJ booth. Techno is known for being quite a heavy genre, those of you that haven’t been to a party with a massive set played by a “popular techno DJ” probably don’t even know what proper techno sounds like. There are also quite a few sub-genre’s for techno. Jungle techno is usually made up of complex “jungle” sounding drums, with background bongo melodies. In Rotterdam and the UK they are known for their industrial techno - which entails sounds from heavy machinery, metal scratching sounds and basically just a lot darker and heavier. The melodic techno is what most people really get into these days - because who doesn’t love a nice melody along with a heavy beat? Then we head on to the popular genre of tech-house which is a fusion of the heavy hitting percussions and kicks from techno mixed with the melodic bass lines and pads that house music has to offer. This type of music has been around for a long time and it seems like it is slowly growing into something that can be enjoyed in Indonesia. Luckily though, there is a techno scene in Bali and Jakarta, it just isn’t exactly booming like it is in the Netherlands and other hot spots in Europe. Places like Fable (June 12) in Jakarta and Jenja, Mint and Woo Bar in Bali have already started to pump techno out their speakers, If you are a filthy techno animal and you need your fix don’t worry, it’s coming! The Joy of being an MC 26

www.beatmag.com

FEATURE

Joy

Tan has been the PR man, crowd controller and MC at X2 Club Jakarta for over five years. He’s famous for his laughter and vivacious nightlife style that helps to keep crowds coming back for more at X2 and Equinox. His MCing is excellent and he has the crowd eating out of his hand at most big gigs at the Senayan venue. If you saw Joy’s work at The Beat Hottest Dance Contest at X2 you would know what we mean. We caught up with the Jakarta born and bred master of ceremonies for a chat.

How did you originally get involved in the PR job at X2? They offered me the position because they saw I had a lot of friends, a database, loads of networking under my belt and the most important thing I was capable of doing the job. I have a good basic knowledge from my own experiences in the past of how to handle guests and how to maintain them. I perform as the PR and I represent the venue.

Is there anything you don’t like about the nightlife? I like everything about it since now I can control myself with that thing called alcohol. What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen while being an MC? Wow, there has been a few of them, but having a girl fall off the stage while a little tipsy at last week’s Beat Dance contest has to be one of the funniest. Give a shout out for the people in the crowd. Party lovers don’t miss the biggest closing party ever this June only at X2 complex and enjoy your incredible nightlife experience with us!

How old are you and how long have you been an MC? Do I have to answer that question? Hahaha, above 30 and I have been MCing since 2003. Ha. How did you get involved in being an MC in the first place and nightlife in general? I graduated from broadcasting school, majoring as a TV presenter in 2001 and then after that I did a lot of casting for TV programs but I preferred to do TV commercials and sinetrons (TV soapies), until in 2003 a new club in Jakarta called Centro opened and was looking for a PR so I joined them. Since then I was the in-house MC for that club and also PR because at that time being an MC at a club was still something new and it was a real challenge for me. What do really like about the nightlife? The crowd, the passion, the music, the ambience, the networking and the connections.

COSMIC GATE TB has a few words with German DJ producers Cosmic Gate, Claus Terhoeven and Stefan Bossems before they arrived to play Colosseum on Friday June 5.

Hey guys! Where in the world are you and what can you see outside your closest window? We are on the way from Frankfurt to a show in Minsk in Belarus, outside of our window we see a fantastic blue sky, flying at 35000 feet over Poland right now we think… :) Give us the short version of how you both got interested in trance. Trance is simply the form of electronic music that touches us the most. For us Trance, though is not only the conventional Trance style as most people would define it. For us Trance is more a feeling a song gives us. As an example, we play a lot from Eric Prydz, who sure isn’t Trance by definition, but his music has a certain Trance vibe for us, and that’s why we like and play it! We would never let a genre limit us, we play what we like, sure overall its mainly Trance, but mixed up with a lot of other influences from techno to house, we think that’s what makes a good DJ, bringing different styles together and creating a good vibe, surprising the crowd a bit even, working with the crowd, having the energy flow, that’s what we want as DJs. Your last album Start To Feel has touched many people’s hearts. How do you guys feel it is any different to other albums you have released in the past?

28

www.beatmag.com

When we write an album, in the end it’s always the same thing we want to do. We simply try to write good music, not more and not less. Music that we feel in this special time or moment, music we want to play as DJs, or music we would want to hear on an album. Albums for us are made to be different, an album is meant to show a certain range of styles, free a DJ and producer from just producing singles that mainly work on the dance floor, and that’s why we like to write albums. They give us artistic freedom, they give room to experiment and think out of the box. When we started Start To Feel, on top of this, we were pretty much annoyed by the overwhelming always same sounding and in our eyes not too long term thinking EDM style, and we simply wanted to be different, put more emotions in the music, as these emotions and feelings for us with EDM got lost with tracks so often just focussing on a big drop and not much more. We do not think STF is so much different to our other albums, to Earth Mover, Sign of the times, Wake Your Mind, all these albums from one to the other always showed a development we made as producers, DJs, and of course as personalities. They reflect a certain timespan of our lives, and we simply hope that Start to Feel touched people in the times of EDM and maybe showed producers that it’s possible to sound modern, but still be

FEATURE different to the majority of EDM productions that are dominating the market... How does playing at parties like Tomorrowland and ASOT feel as to playing in the club world? What are the factors that make you enjoy both? The huge festivals like ASOT or Tomorrowland simply live from the huge stages, the light and big sound systems, the huge crowd, it’s simply amazing to have tens of thousands of people jumping or singing together, a crazy feeling! A club gig comparing to a huge festival simply is way more intimate, the DJ and the crowd are closer together, the energy flow of course is different to a festival, but in the end both are amazing and we do not want to miss out on one or the other, we enjoy the different feel of the club and the festival shows, like this it never gets boring for us, we can play different sets, perfect! Can you describe “the perfect party” for us? Everyone’s perfect party is maybe different, but for us sure most important is the right music on a good sound system, hopefully with good friends/a cool crowd in a nice environment, that’s all it takes, let the party begin!!! How much prep work do you guys do now compared to when you first started? Do you do any at this stage in your careers? The only thing we do prepare and produce for our sets is a new intro song that we use for a special tour or so, the rest of our set always is and will be spontaneous. Who knows how the vibe on the dance floor is, what tracks the DJ has played before, imagine tune number two in your pre recorded set was just played by the dj before, what then!???? Prep work for us is really only to have new fresh tunes in our playlist folder, but if and when we play them, only the set will show, a pre recorded set would be against everything we see as proper DJing. Are there any advantages/disadvantages when working with another artist for the vocals? For example for your latest track with Emma Hewitt “Going Home”? Well the huge advantage of course is to have an incredible talent that Emma adds to the team,

her vocals and songwriting skills are simply stunning, there is no singer sounding similar to her, and that’s why we enjoy every single time working with her, every song we have done over the years with Emma, and hope there is more to come in the future!!! With the start of your record label, radio show, album and more, last year was totally massive! How’s 2015 shaping up? We simply have been touring like crazy, have to record the weekly radio show now, and on top released our Wake Your Mind Sessions 001 Mix CD, and soon the Deluxe edition of Start To Feel will be released holding 14 unreleased Remixes of the Album. We do have a few new collaboration and also a solo single started to produce in the studio, so we actually are keeping it as busy as last year, the summer season looks crazy for us with all the festivals and three Ibiza residencies waiting, so 2015 is shaping up more than great. Who are some artists that you guys have felt influenced or have just felt like they have really helped with your amazing careers? This is hard to say, we have never really looked on what other colleagues do, of course there are people like Tiesto, Gabriel and Dresden we prefer to hopefully be the ones who inspire others. What do you think of the commercial EDM sound versus straight up trance, and is EDM here to stay? We talked a bit about this before but let me say, there is really good EDM out there, but with its popularity there’s also a lot of what we could call crap getting released. A lot of productions and DJs have the same feel and they sound too much alike. We think it really is getting too much, but as always the market will regulate things, and when it’s too much also for the people, for the music consumer, the market will clean itself up, it always does, and it has sure started already... With what song would you end this interview with? This is the End, my only friend, the End... See you guys in Jakarta very soon :) www.beatmag.com

CLASSICAL

When We Dance to Traviata

By Erza S.T.

www.beatmag.com

I

n the history of moving to music, ballet is the mother of all modern western dance. For centuries, ballet has been developing in harmony together with opera. Many famous opera productions include ballet dance sequences as part of the story such as Saint Saens “Samson et Delila” and Delibes “Lakme”. In some cases, renowned French composers such as Jean-Baptiste

CLASSICAL Lully and Andre Campra even went further by creating a full opera ballet that contained more ballet dance music than tragedy and the plots were not necessarily derived from classical mythology. As time progressed and ballet transformed into contemporary dance, we got to see a new hybrid that is known as operatic dance. By definition, operatic dance is where the whole opera story is interpreted into contemporary dance based on the music and arias of the opera itself. It is where movements and body expression represent the whole essence of the opera. One of the best of operatic representatives in the world is none other then Monica Casadei and her Artemis Danza. Graduating in philosophy at the University of Bologna with a dissertation on Plato and dance with a competitive career in rhythmical gymnastics, Monica Casadei studied classical ballet and modern dance, at first in Italy and then at The Place in London. She finally chose Paris as the city to take up her residence. Her eastern contamination derived from sojourns in the East and the practice of the martial arts Aikido have been decisive in her studies. She attended the Académie des Arts Martiaux et Arts Contemporaines in Paris directed by André Cognard and at the Académie Autonomed’Aikido Kobayashi Hirokazu she achieved the level of two in Aikido and a teaching degree in Aikishintaiso. In these years she was also performer and dancer for several French companies, but two artists really influenced her choreographic training: Pierre Doussaint and Isabelle Dubouloz. In 1994 Monica founded the Artemis Danza Company in France and she became the artistic director and main choreographer. In 1997 she

moved to Italy and from 1998 to 2007 she was in residence at FondazioneTeatro Due – Teatro Stabile of Parma and Reggio Emilia. Today she has produced 30 productions, for a stable team of 15 dancers, whose musician and composer is Luca Vianini, assistant choreographer and repeater Elena Bertuzzi, the company’s photographer is Fabian, video maker is Emanuele Cervellini and aikido teacher Annick Lemaire Shihan, in addition to other dancers and artists identified specifically for the new productions. As an artist and world-renowned choreographer who has been around the world (including Indonesia in 2010) and choreographed many opera productions, Monica started an ambitious project called Corpo a Corpo Verdi in 2011. It is an operatic dance proposal of the most famous Verdi’s operas: first chapter Traviata (debuted at Teatro Comunale di Ferrara in 2011) and Rigoletto (presented in 2012 at Theatre de Suresnes Jean Vilar in Paris). In her adaption of Traviata, Casadei utilizes the dancer’s body as an instrument to translate, enhance, and transform the evocative power of Verdi’s opera and music to create a visually striking and highly dramatic production. Employing the vigorous and energetic gestures that typically characterize Casadei’s choreographic language, the dancer’s body is consumed with passion, the distress, and ultimately the tragedy of Violetta’s and Alfredo’s affair. This tour-de-force production is coming to Indonesia for the very first time and for one night only. It will take place at Ciputra Artpreneur opera house this coming June 14. If you are curious how operatic dance looks or sounds, then make sure you don’t miss this one night show!

CD REVIEW Wonderful Wow Worthy

Blur

The Magic Whip

If you ask me, Blur’s 1997 self-titled, indieinspired attempt to crack America marked a watershed in the working relationship between frontman Damon Albarn and guitarist Graham Coxon. Largely Coxon’s vision, the album (and its follow-up 13) shunned Albarn’s Britpop roots, eventually driving a creative wedge between the pair. The knock on effect resulted in Albarn burying himself in obscure world music projects, Coxon working on his solo career, ever-faithful drummer Dave Rowntree disappearing into family life, and charismatic bassist Alex Jones upping-sticks to become a dairy farmer in rural Oxfordshire. Things steadily deteriorated from there, reaching rock bottom with 2003’s Think Tank – an album recorded largely without Coxon after he was ejected from recording sessions a few days in. The existence of Blur has always depended on Albarn and Coxon being able to work together, and over a decade later it appears that things are much rosier in the Blur camp. 2013 saw a slew of nostalgic reunion tour dates scattered across SE Asia – Jakarta included, which culminated in the band hanging out in Hong Kong and tentatively trying out a bunch of new tracks – mostly inspired by their travels throughout the region and being lost in this side of the world’s mega-cities. The Magic Whip ties together those sessions – “New World Towers” and “Pyongyang” imagine drab

Worthless Worm Fodder

Asian skyscraperscapes, while “My Terracotta Heart” takes us “flying over the Java sea” in a lucid dream of electropop melancholy. From the kickoff, things seem a great deal more democratic between Albarn & Coxon. “Lonesome Street” splices together the trademark sounds of both – Britpop survivor and awkward indie nerd, working together to achieve a common ground that indulges the both of them, without sounding like a lame compromise. “I Broadcast” and “Ong Ong” do a similar thing – the sort of loutish guitars and shouty instant sing-along choruses that characterized The Great Escape and Parklife golden years. The rest, stylistically, are divided fairly equally between the two – songs like “Go Out” and “Thought I Was a Spaceman” bear the stamp of Coxon-penned lo-fi indie, while “Ghost Ship” and the gorgeously desolate “Pyongyang” would both sit comfortably in the track listing for Plastic Beach. In short, it’s everything you’d expect from the newly reconciled band, but what really sets The Magic Whip apart is the abundance of fresh ideas and good vibes. These guys are clearly enjoying each other’s company, there appears to be real chemistry again, and the result is an album that will surprise and delight Blur fans the world over. Dan Ashcroft.

FOOD

PEPIN & MALLOY Americana food with a playful twist. When you need a good hot dog, burger, sandwich, or milk shake fix, there’s no shortage of fast food places competing for your money. But newly opened Pepin & Malloy is standing out from the pack. The eatery, located in Citos (Cilandak Town Square), has décor with a carnival vibe. The owners came up with the characters, as shown on the mural on the wall; Pepin and Malloy are two circus folks that bring smiles to everyone they meet. And the food at Pepin & Malloy will definitely make you and your tummy happy. First of all, all the bread and meat at Pepin & Malloy are specially made to the restaurant’s specific orders; and you can really taste the difference. The menu has a little bit of everything. Still, the restaurant’s trademark are the hot dogs. The most basic one is the P&M No. 1 (36k); a classic dog with mustard and tomato sauce. If

50

www.beatmag.com

FOOD you want bit of oomph on your dog, try the Chili Cheese Dog (55k), with hearty homemade chili. Feeling Mexican? Go for the Nacho Libre (50k), topped with guacamole, and nachos! There’s also the Hawaiian (45k), with chicken hot dog, pineapple salsa, and chopped cilantro. But our pick is the Philly Cheese Dog (65k), a twist of the Philly Cheese Steak; beef hot dog topped liberally with thinly sliced pieces of steak, melted cheese, and peppers. Yumm! There are also a number of delicious burgers to choose from. The Single Malloy (60k) is the simplest one, but you can double the fun with the Double Malloy (65k); two homemade ground beef patties, with special Pepin sauce. Or take it up a notch with the Olympus Delight (60k), with a feta cheese-infused ground beef patty. Pepin & Malloy is not just about the hot dogs and burgers. The sandwiches are also noteworthy; we highly recommend the Swedish Meatball Sandwich (55k); beef meatballs, potato spread, and raspberry sauce in a baguette. It’s a wonderful juxtaposition of texture and taste. For a taste of Asia, try the Vietnamese (55k), with chicken breast, and a good dollop of peanut and chili sauce. It wouldn’t be fast food without a generous helping of tasty sides. The Fries Speciale (27k) and Chili Cheese Fries (35k) are favorites, but we just had to rave about the Buffalo Wings (36k for 6 pcs, 49k for 12). We kid you not, these might just be one of the best, realtasting Buffalo Wings in town! We just can’t get enough! And of course, the Milk Shakes will provide a sweet ending for your meal. You can choose from Strawberry (21k), Choco Chip (21k), Banana Chip (28k), or Choco Oreo (28k) shake. For fast food with premium taste, Pepin & Malloy gets our two thumbs up! A solid addition for Jakarta’s culinary scene. (Budi Iskandar)

PICANTE Mexican Grill A new Mexican eatery that’s fresh and tasty!

On

a recent lazy Sunday, my dear friend Clarissa and I were looking for a place to have a late lunch. We heard about Picante from a friend and decided to check it out. The Mexican eatery was just opened on April 20, and nestled nicely inside Graha CIMB Niaga building in the Sudirman business district. Picante is a labor of love for a gang of Indonesian friends who studied in Colorado. They longed to bring to Jakarta the taste of simple yet delicious Mexican food, like at the joints they used to frequent during their college days. Clarissa and I immediately liked the décor; it’s simple and hip, with high ceilings, unique murals, and a seating arrangement that feels both spacious and warm. The nice garden view also help. We got there with enough time to sit and enjoy what the restaurant has to offer (They close at 2.30pm on Sunday). With a cafeteria set-up, Picante serves a menu of Mexican favorites. You can see all the fresh ingredients to make your dish of choice. We started, though, with the tasty Chicken Quesadilla (60k). You can also munch on the Dory Fritters (35k), served with lime tartar sauce, or go with the

52

www.beatmag.com

FOOD favorite Tortilla Chips (25k). The chips are made fresh every day, with a squeeze of lime and sea salt added (if you prefer them unsalted, just let the staff know). Then choose the dip you like: guacamole, cheddar cheese with jalapeno, or fresh tomato salsa. Taking corn to another level, another must-try item here is the Grilled Corn Cheese (25k); sweet corn, with feta cheese, and cayenne sprinkle! And the Chili Con Carne (36k) is as hearty as they come. For the main, I chose the hefty Barbacoa Burrito (75k); tortilla wrap, filled with pulled beef, rice, beans, salsa, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and lettuce. ¡Sabroso! You can have it as a Burrito Bowl, which is tortilla-less burrito filling served in a bowl! The tacos are terrific, as Clarissa found out. Cranked up with ingredients, she got two tacos (soft and crispy), and she loved her Grilled Chicken Tacos (52k)! Picante has great accompaniments for your Mexican favorite. For the quesadillas, tacos and burritos, you can also have it with Fish, Grilled Chicken, Barbacoa (pulled beef), or Grilled Steak. Then there’s Roasted Corn Salsa, Guacamole, Salsa Roja, Salsa Verde, Tomato Salsa, Hot Salsa, and Sour Cream. There’s Pinto and Black beans, and Brown and Basmati lime rice. Options galore! Although fully satisfied, Clarissa and I just had to end our wonderful lunch with the Churros with chocolate dipping (20k) and coffee. Picante is a great new Mexican place for you discerning foodies. Highly recommended! And you can make it a party at home as Picante also does catering for 20 to 200 people. Now that’s a neat idea for a fiesta! (Budi Iskandar)

WARUNG TURKI by Turkuaz

A new Turkish‘ warung’ in the heart of Kemang.

We

all know that Turkuaz is the place to be for authentic Turkish cuisine in Jakarta, thanks to the brilliance of Chef Sezai Zorlu. And now, the gregarious chef has opened another Turkish restaurant. And with a name with ‘warung’, you expect the place to be just a tad less glitzy than Turkuaz, but this restaurant is still beautifully designed. A giant glass door provides a warm welcome, and as you step in, a couple of things will capture your attention right away. There’s a huge painting of the chef’s mother on the wall; she is his inspiration, and the main reason that he is in his profession. The love of family and the love of food really shows on the delectable dishes here. Most, if not all, of the dishes here are said to be the chef’s personal favorites from his childhood, back to the days when he started learning to cook his mother’s delightful recipes. Another fascinating item here is the giant wood fire oven. This is where the wonderful Turkish breads are made. According to the chef, the mix of bamboo, coffee, and rambutan tree wood are perfect for the oven to produce the breads and some of the dishes at Warung Turki. Other than the traditional Turkish trinkets decorating most of the restaurant, there are a lot of bamboo elements here, adding a local ‘warung’ touch to the place. And on the second floor, there’s a nice semi-private room should you want have a bit more intimate gathering of friends and/or loved ones.

FOOD Well, we began our meal with some pleasant Turkish mint tea. Then came the Pide Ekmegi; it is the all-time favorite Turkish bread with sesame. The bread is served with Hummus; a pureed chickpeas and tahini with organic extra virgin Turkish olive oil mix, and Babaganuc; a blend of wood charcoal grilled aubergines, tomatoes, chili peppers, and garlic, a perfect starter! We can’t say enough about both of these dips. Love love love! Next up was the Peynirli Gozleme; bread stuffed with feta cheese, mozzarella cheese, and parsley, and the Kuzu Pide; bread topped with seasoned lamb. The freshly baked bread are truly wonderful here. And of course, we just had to have the Lamb Shish Kebab! It’s easy to see why the kebab is so popular. The flavorsome marinated lamb is just divine. To wash down all the savory deliciousness, the special homemade Turkish-style Lemonade is a great refreshing drink to have. And last but not least, for your sweet cravings, the assortment of scrumptious Baklavas dessert will blow you away. Warung Turki is another superb offering from Chef Sezai Zorlu. You can count on him to take you on yet another tasty trip to Turkey with every single dish at this new venture. (Budi Iskandar)
