After the quiet month of Ramadhan, Jakarta and Bali partygoers are in for a treat. As if the floodgates have been opened, for the next two months Indonesia will play host to three big rave parties promising to bring in top notch DJs. First is Dreamfields Festival in Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park in Bali on August 15, which once again promises

to be the party of the Bali high-season. Next is Ultra Bali which will be held for two days on September 24 and 25.

Ultra Music Festival has its roots in Miami, Florida USA which began in 1999 and grew to become a global phenomenon held in exotic destinations in all four corners of the world. So big is the franchise’s appeal, Ultra Bali pre-tickets sold out in one day and without even announcing the DJ lineup. The ‘beach’ event will be held at Potato Head Beach Club and as yet nobody knows exactly how they will fit 10k people claimed to be attending the event over two days inside, but we presume they will. For people staying in Jakarta that weekend, the “Invasion Electric Dance Festival” will be held conveniently one day after Ultra Bali on September 26. Set to headline this event is Swede, DJ Alesso, currently number 15

SCOOP The Sound Of Music The Sound of Music is a five-time Tony Award winning musical by Richard Rodgers. The story follows Maria Rainer who takes care of seven children of widower Captain Von Trapp in the 1930s, when the Nazis took control of Salzburg, Germany. The Broadway production was first made on stage in 1959. The musical soon became a worldwide legend in the theatrical industry. The Sound of Music will be in Jakarta on October 6 to 11 at Ciputra Artpreneur Jakarta.

Indonesia Jazz Festival 2015 Set to be held as part of the Indonesian independence celebrations, the Indonesian Jazz Festival will set the scene for over 120 jazz musician performances on five separate stages. Foam Festival After being cancelled due to a technical problems, Foam Festival is ready to be held on Sunday, August 2 in Festival Beach, Taman Impian Jaya Ancol. This is the first and the biggest foam festival in Indonesia. This festival also has a 5k Foam Fun Run and festival. The local acts that will perform are Alexa, DJ Yasmin, Winky, D.U.A, Joanna. There will be a playground area with several games, bull ride, bungy trampoline, flying fox, dunk tank, gladiator, king hammer and others, with a food truck area. Foam party sessions will be held twice times 10am and 7pm.

SCOOP JAKARTA COMIC CON The biggest comic convention in the world is ready to be held in Jakarta next September 2015. The world-renowned annual multi-genre entertainment and comic convention, Comic Con is ready to be held for the first time in Jakarta this September 25 – 27, 2015. Taking place at JIExpo Kemayoran – Jakarta, Jakarta Comic Con promises a pop culture phenomenon for Indonesian fans. The original comic con was held as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans. The name, as given on its website, is Comic-Con International: San Diego; but it is commonly known simply as Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con or “SDCC”. Similar to San Diego’s, Jakarta Comic Con will feature various pop culture attractions; from the best in movies and TV series, to animation, comics, cartoons, toys, video games, collectibles, live stage activities. The event will be held at the JIExpo Kemayoran - Jakarta, September 25, 26 and 27.

Clean Bandit Live IN Jakarta Clean Bandit is a British electronic group founded in 2009. The group consists of Jack Patterson, Luke Patterson, Grace Chatto, and Neil Amin-Smith. Their 2010 single “Mozart’s House”, reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart. In January 2014, they scored their first UK Singles Chart-topping single with “Rather Be”, a collaboration with Jess Glynne, featuring elements of both classical and dance music. “Rather Be” remained at the top of the chart for four weeks. In 2014, they achieved their first US Top 10 single with “Rather Be” peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2015, “Rather Be” won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. They will be performing in Skeeno Hall, Gandaria City on December 8.

Anime Festival Asia Indonesia 2015 (AFA ID 2015) Born in 2008, Anime Festival Asia (AFA) is the largest and most followed J-pop culture event in Southeast Asia covering Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, with nine festivals in the past six years exceeding 130,000 attendees in 2013. AFA has become a household name to J-Pop Culture lovers in the Southeast Asia, and is the leading and most effective content delivery platform, centring around all things Japanese Pop Culture. This year will mark the fourth year of AFA Indonesia, which will be held on September 25 to 27 in JIExpo Kemayoran. Set to perform in AFA ID are FLOW (Japanese rock band), FripSide, GARNiDELiA., Motsu x KAYA, Nano, and Yanaginagi. Big Bang (K-Pop Boyband) Formed in 2006, Big Bang very much defines the Korean Pop music scene, leading the charge for globalising the Korean music wave. Cookin’ Nanta is a comedic South Korean musical show with a cooking twist. The show is about three chefs getting into all sorts of trouble to prepare food for a wedding which they only have a limited time to do so. Cookin’ Nanta has held shows in many countries, and combines acrobatic performances, comedy, magic, and mime acts, and use kitchen utensils in their performance. The Maine

The Maine is an American rock band from Tempe, Arizona formed in 2007. Their first release, the EP Stay Up, Get Down was released in late 2007, followed by a five song EP titled The Way We Talk also released in late 2007. The band’s first full-length album, Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop was released in July 2008. The Maine released their second full-length album, Black & White, on July 2010, selling over 20 thousand copies in its first week. On December 2011, the group’s third album, Pioneer, was released and it peaked at No. 90 on the Billboard 200. Their newest full-length record Forever Halloween was released on June 2013 reaching No. 39 on the Billboard 200 by selling over 10,000 copies in its first week. Yellow Claw

Yellow Claw is a DJ trio from Amsterdam. The group consists of Bizzey (Leo Roelandschap), Jim Aasgier (Jim Taihuttu) and Nizzle (Nils Rondhuis). Their music is a mix of a wide range of genres and often incorporates elements from trap music, hip hop, and dubstep. Yellow Claw first gained popularity in the middle of 2010, after founding and hosting the Yellow Claw Thursday night party at one of Amsterdam’s most famous night clubs, the Jimmy Woo. During 2012 and 2013, they released a number of successful singles, which charted on the Dutch and Belgian national charts: “Krokobil”, “Nooit meer slapen”, “Thunder” and “Last Night Ever”. The videos for the singles became viral, each gaining over four million views on YouTube. They will be performing in Blowfish on Friday, August 14.

One big name from the world’s dance music is Andy Moor, the English trance and progressive Producer DJ. Grammy-award nominated, ranked in the DJ Mag Top 100 for the past six years, nominated for the DJ Awards in 2009, won ‘Best Dance Record’ at the International Dance Music Awards in 2006, Best Trance Producer’ and ‘Best Trance Track’ in 2004. His music blends progressive house music and trance with various techniques also a big bassline. Masaaki Suzuki is a Japanese organist, harpsichordist and conductor, and the founder and musical director of the Bach Collegium Japan. He also teaches and conducts at Yale University and has conducted orchestras and choruses around the world. He earned degrees in composition and organ at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, then earned Soloist Diplomas at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where he studied harpsichord and organ. Suzuki is also currently recording Bach’s complete works for solo harpsichord and is one of the few keyboard players to have recorded all four books of Bach’s Clavier-Übung (including book 3, which is for organ). FEATURE The Beat speaks with one of Dreamfields founders and operational manager, Theo Greene about the festival held in Bali last year and which is back again this August 14. Held at Garuda Wisnu Kencana, or better known as GWK, it is surely the event of the high season and not to be missed for all you ravers in town over the busiest weekend of the year – the Independence/Merdeka long weekend.

TBJ: Dreamfields was a great success last year, what do you think was the reason for that?

Theo: Krewella and Yellow Claw are definitely two acts you don’t want to miss this year. And of course the anthem act with Dreamfields is resident DJ Indyana. Besides that we have invited some new international talent like Moti and Justin Strikes. Who are definitely talented producers and top 100 material for the future.

Theo: We were a little bit overwhelmed with the success. However, we did a good and sophisticated market research, but we never expected these numbers for the first year. I guess it was just the right place at the right time... Although we were convinced of the success of the concept, we did not expect the numbers for the first year. I think it took most people by surprise. I’ve seen just about every rave party at GWK from the beginning and Dreamfields was by far one of the biggest and best. Who comes up with the stage concept etc? It’s a pretty powerful setup. Theo: We work together with Matrixx Events based in the Netherlands. They have over 15 years experience in stage designs and festival concepts. This year it will be even bigger with two main stages. There was a lot of speculation on the numbers last year, what was the official number going through the gates and how many people does it take to stage an event like that?

How many are you expecting this year? As the ticket sales are going now we can easily go to 20,000+. How about the set up this year, any changes? The biggest changes for this year’s set up are that we got two equal main stages. Both with lots of LEDs, fireworks, sound, light and show effects. Andrew Rayel is pretty good and been to Bali before. How about the rest of the DJ lineup, anyone we should watch out for?

Last year there were some issues with exiting the GWK area after the show. What are you doing to sort that out? Theo: We learnt a lot from last year’s experience. Therefore, GWK have made some major changes regarding traffic and parking and we will use free busses to get people back to Kuta. There is also a second exit for cars which will help to split exiting vehicles. So we think this year will be okay. Anything more you would like to say about this year’s Dreamfields? There are some more events at Sky Garden again this year. The whole week we have official pre and after party’s at Sky Garden. And we have a special brunch after party at Hotel TS Suites - a Vegas style party brunch and rooftop pool party. August 16, 12 noon till 5pm. TS suites is the hotel where all the artist will be staying.

FEATURE Miss Nine has been spinning her wears in the electronic music world for years now. Born in Germany, but beginning to DJ in Amsterdam, she has opened for big players like Avicii, Tiesto, Deep Dish, David Guetta, John Digweed, Nick Warren and Dave Seaman. Miss Nine has come a very long way since those days and has certainly made a massive name for herself. The guest DJ for globally renowned clubs like Privilege in Ibiza, London’s Minstry of Sound and the main stage of Sunburn Festival on India and Miami’s Ultra Music Festival has got a busy schedule ranging from all those parties to modeling for brands including Levi’s and Dolce & Gabbana, to starting her own label 925 Music, as well as being an ambassador to the charity organization, Plan Netherlands. She will be playing at Colloseum on August 14 so read on and find out a little more about Miss Nine.

Where in the world are you and what can you see outside your closest window? I’m currently in St Tropez for some days where I played at a private event last night. The weather is amazing, very sunny and when I look out of my window I see a swimming pool, palm trees and the sea with boats in the water. What got you into DJing? The record Daft Punk – “One More Time”. When I listened to this track I was dancing in my living room all day long. I like how the DJ in a club takes the crowd on a journey through the night with the music, brings a smile to peoples’ faces and can give them an unforgettable night. How about your name, Miss Nine, is there a meaning behind that? Nine is my nickname. Spoken Ni(e)ne. I’m born march 9th and 9 is a lucky number. What are the pros and cons of being a world renowned DJ? Over the years DJs have been responsible for new musical directions, advances in technology, fashion trends, and dance movements, among other things. They are in a position to enrich culture on a number of levels, and are in no danger of fading away. You are traveling the world and get to know different cultures from another side, in comparison to visiting the country as a tourist. You have access to lots of

new music from labels to use in your sets and radio shows that you can share with your fans. For example in my “Nine Sessions mixed by Miss Nine” radio show you find lots of new music and mixes from labels and artists. Subscribe & download for free on iTunes It can be very tiring with all the traveling through different time zones in a short period of time with little sleep. Some of the family birthdays or special occasions you can’t attend because you are traveling somewhere on the other side of the world. Collecting can be an addiction like having to be always up to date with the latest software, new plugins and hardware gear. What are some of your favorite cities and venues to play at? I love playing all over the world. South Korea is always fun, it feels like you are in a rock concert. South America has its flair for example in Maresias (Sirena) or Camboriu (Warung) the club is located in the middle of a jungle, you play in front of a sea of people, the sun rises in the back while dancing and listening to good music. Las Vegas where I have my residency at Club XS, which was voted No 1 Club of the USA for the 6th time in a row where I’m the first and only female resident DJ next to Avicii, Arty, Skrillex, Major Lazor, Diplo, Kaskade, Martin Solveig and many more. insane. Bali in Indonesia has some great beach venues. Ultra Music festival In Miami is always fun. Playing in my home town Amsterdam is great too. Basically, I love playing everywhere music unites us and it feels like family. If you weren’t a DJ how do you think you would be spending your time? I always wanted to be a professional athlete when I was little. It’s hard to say as you can do so many things these days. I love to be around and work with people. I would say I would do something creative in fashion, travel, music or lifestyle as I love to come up with new ideas and projects and work them out. How often do you produce in the studio? How long does it normally take to finish off a track? I took time off this year to spend more time in the studio as it’s important to evolve yourself and your sound. It’s always hard to say how long to work on one track. Sometimes you make a

track within 5 hours and the other day you work on a track for weeks. For example, I have 11 different mixes from my new track Let’s Go. For us artists it’s sometimes difficult to say this project is finished and this is the final mix as we hear so many different things in a production. I’m daily behind my computer. I get inspired while travelling and everyday I create or think or come up with a piece to the puzzle. This is about songwriting, composing melodies, themes and looking for artists and singers to work with for future projects. Do you have any tracks that are mainstay/mustplays in your set? If so, what are they? or do you mix it up every time? I would say “Summer from Calvin Harris” a great track to put a smile on people faces. You have been in and out of Indonesia’s nightlife scene for quite some time. How do you rate it? It’s always amazing. I did a two week tour a while ago. I visited many cities I had never heard about and the feedback has been amazing, the scene in Indonesia is growing. It’s really nice to see and hear that people are open for new music and share it. I’m very much looking forward to return to Jakarta and Bali in August. This is a must during my big Asia tour at least once a year. Biggest inspirations in today’s music scene? Michael Jackson, Madonna, Taylor Swift and Carl Cox are some of my inspirations in music. Music back in the 80s was already original. It’s amazing how long a song can live from artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna. Taylor Swift is such a strong and smart woman and Carl Cox is a legend in the electronic music scene. He

has been around for a very long time, a very nice person to talk to and his performances are always a pleasure to watch and attend. Do you have any big projects coming up? I’m working on several original songs and collaborations with singers and songwriters from the UK, USA, LA, Spain and other artists. ojek, and recent newcomer GrabBike, are smartphone applications that connects customers with individual motorcycle taxis (better known as ojek), which is similar to that of Uber. Gojek offers not only transporting customers from point A to B, but it also provides an in-city courier service, and customers use Gojek to deliver food and buy movie tickets (Gojek can shop on the customers behalf of upwards Rp 1 million). The service has been proved to be safe and reliable, thus increasing its popularity. Considering Jakarta’s traffic has become unbearable, Gojek and GrabBike makes life a lot easier in the city. Forgot your wallet or handphone at home? No problem, just use their service. The Beat Jakarta has used Gojek’s various services several times, from delivering a passport to food take-away, and every time Gojek riders deliver good results. After downloading the application, one simply registers and can immediately use the Gojek service. The first step is to decide what kind of service is needed, be it instant courier service, transport, or to buy food or other things. Then the customer types in the location details of pick up point and delivery on the mapof which the location of available Gojek riders is also visible. After agreeing on the service fee, the customer simply waits for a Gojek rider to respond- from The Beat Jakarta’s experience, usually it take less than three minutes. Once a Gojek rider responds, a notification will appear with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) of the rider to the pick-up location. Although this part is often inaccurate, still it is not

far off from the stated ETA. Fortunately, the name and phone number of the Gojek rider is available thus opening access to direct communication. The application will also notify the customer once the Gojek rider has received the package and is enroute to the destination point. Once it is delivered, the customer will be asked to rate the service of the Gojek rider. Customers can pay either cash or with Gojek credit. Usually priced according to distance, Gojek offered a flat rate of 10k last month and customers were delighted to use this service, especially to deliver food from the four corners of the city. Gojek mainly serves the greater Jakarta area, and is also popping up in other cities around Indonesia. Ojeks have been around for the longest time, and with the entry of Gojek and GraBike, ojeks acquire an important business value: customer trust. Several Gojek riders that The Beat Jakarta talked to admitted that once they joined Gojek they got busy, easily increasing double of what they used to make. On the flip side of their success, there are some instances that Gojek riders received threats and harassment from existing ojek riders. Some Gojek riders didn’t start off as an ojek, but are office employees that work 9 to 5 and would put on the green Gojek helmet and jacket after work hours for extra income. Founded in 2011, Gojek makes money by getting a cut from each Gojek rider service, reported at 20%. Gojek has received the support from the Jakarta governor, and is even included in Jakarta’s “smart city” future development plan.

Darshan Pridhnani has been in the electronic music industry since 2007, bringing top international DJs to Jakarta for major festivals and smaller club gigs. Names like Tiesto, Sasha, John Digweed, Richie Hawtin, Armin van Buuren are just a few. In 2013 he started HYPE booking agency together with his buddy Christian, and with HYPE they have a lot of plans, a lot of big names DJs coming and one particular project is on top of the list; bringing the underground back to the dance floors of the capital. We caught up with Darshan to find out more about this underground scene.

You want to bring deep house, techno, techhouse to Jakarta clubs, right? What’s the reason behind it? Darshan: Yes I really wanna bring back the great scene Jakarta used to have. Right now is the right time to bring back the underground music scene to Jakarta. A lot of people are getting bored with listening to the same music of the past few years. You can also see how the deephouse/ techno scene is getting more popular in America now, thanks to DJs like Carl Cox, Eric Prydz, Richie Hawtin, John Digweed to name a few. So has this style of music ever been popular in Jakarta before? Darshan: Yes, in the past Jakarta always had techno/deephouse DJs like James Zabiela, John Digweed, Sasha and a lot more house DJs playing gigs here. Why is this music better than what’s served up now? Darshan: For me, I like to listen to a long set from a DJ, I wanna feel the journey. That’s what I like about these underground DJs, it’s like they have a story from the set they play. My personal favorite is Eric Prydz at Brixton Academy back in 2011. Back in the day we used to have a lot of music options, all the trance, techno, house DJs came here. You don’t see that much in recent years. There are so many clubs here but they all play the same sound. Back then we had a lot of options.

It seems most DJs and producers have moved to this commercial EDM stuff in the recent the past. Do you think they are being slowly weaned off it or it’s still gonna be around for a while? Darshan: EDM is pop music and will always be on the main stage. I think EDM will be around for a while. I’m just glad other music genres are getting the recognition they deserve. Give me a description of the kind of people listening to EDM and the kind of people into techno/house. How are they different? Darshan: In Indonesia EDM generally is for a younger crowd, techno/deephouse is a more mature crowd. I would say 25+. But lately we get requests at Hype for DJs like Robin Schulz, Hot Since 82, Kygo from the younger crowd, which is a good sign. Who would you say are the top practitioners of techno today? Darshan: Carl Cox, his weekly summer event at Space is definitely one of the best. Also Dixon, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Eric Prydz, Joris Voorn, John Digweed and Sasha. So what kind of shows do you have planned and where? Darshan: Next we have the Hype Anniversary on August 14 with M.A.N.D.Y at Foundry and August 21 with Mike Mago at Fable. We have a few more lined up over the next months, including nu disco DJs, which we are really looking forward to it.

This summer, Jakarta is not only celebrating its 70th independence year but also a month of good concerts. From Ananda Sukarlan to Bach, we have the options to hear the latest composition by a living maestro or a performance piece from one of Bach’s most famous vocal works. To begin is the world premiere of Ananda Sukarlan’s upcoming “Chamber Symphony No. 2”, which is a continuation of a commissioned project by Prof. Dr. B.J. Habibie through the Habibie-Ainun Foundation. The former president of Indonesia, Habibie commissioned Ananda Sukarlan last year to create a new symphony composition as a love tribute to his late wife Ainun Habibie. As the project continues this year, Ananda is back to create his second chamber symphony. Keeping the instrumentation just like his first chamber symphony, he is trying to create important solos for many of the instruments. Ananda wrote in his blog that this piece would also be more virtuosic. “This time I am focusing more on the dreams of Mr. President, that Indonesia should acquire the glory we deserve, although in many things we are so much behind other countries. I immediately think of that famous phrase: Per Aspera Ad Astra (From the dust to the stars). When I designed the work’s structure, I had it in mind, but then I applied this concept only for the First Movement. And for this, I use that simple motif, the most basic thing when we learn a musical instrument: the scale do-re-mi-fa-sol. And then the triad. Why am I doing this? It’s because I am using the theme “Anging Mamiri” (a folk song from South of Sulawesi, the birthplace of Mr. Habibie) as its main material, and the melody Anging Mamiri starts with that perfect triad. Therefore I try to symbolize how a beginner starts playing the do-re-mi-fa-sol and do-mi-sol themes as the first step to later play exhilarating, sizzling variations on it.”

For a contemporary piece, we explore the sounds of Bach’s famous vocal works, Cantata BMV 137 and Magnificat in D Major as well as the Orchestral Suite No. 1 for orchestra. Part of the Aula Simfonia Jakarta monthly program, this concert will have Masaaki Suzuki as the guest conductor together with Jakarta Oratorio Society and Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra. Being an organist, harpsichordist, conductor and musical director, this award-winning musician is a true specialist of Bach. Born in Kobe, Masaaki began playing the organ professionally at church services at the age of 12. Since then, his career continued as one of Japan’s best classical musicians. He founded the early music department at Tokyo University of The Arts and is now working as the principal guest conductor of the Yale Scholar Cantorum and visiting professor of choral conducting at Yale University. In 2012, Suzuki was awarded two of the world’s leading Bach prizes: the Bach Prize, awarded by the Royal Academy of Music and sponsored by the Kohn Foundation, and the Bach Medal from the City of Leipzig. Wolf Alice My Love is Cool

Calling to mind the sound of 90s US college radio, Wolf Alice have been touted by more than a few as the resurrection of grunge for a starryeyed generation caught between the X-Factor and Taylor Swift. Formed in 2010 by vocalist Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Joff Oddie and joined soon after by Theo Ellis (bass), and Joel Amey (drums), the genesis of this young North London quartet has been admirably understated, despite the massive amount of hype already surrounding them. Despite only having drip-fed a few EPs to whet fans appetite, by late 2013 Wolf Alice were the most blogged about band out there, meaning in buzzband terms they’ve had a lot to live up to with debut LP My Love is Cool. Anyone who’s been crushing on singles “Fluffy” and “Giant Peach” would agree things kick off in a completely unexpected direction with the acoustic “Turn To Dust” – a smouldering folky number that belies the more breathless tracks to come in all but lyric: “Keep your beady eyes on me” warns Rowsell, before “Bros” bursts into life in a frenzy of feel-good guitar and usagainst-the-world vocals.

From there it’s a giddy thrill ride through indie rock, post-grunge and dreamy pop, undeniably euphoric but still tinted with moments of melancholy. The band’s hometown of Camden is described as “this dark old town that I adore”, where they’re “waiting for the bus to nowhere”, and “Your Loves Whore” poses the classic “will we still be friends?” conundrum after a breakup. The bittersweet cadence of Rowsell’s voice – somewhere between Kate Rusby & Karen O, further adds to the intrigue of a band that toes the line between youthful spirit and oldbeyond-their-years empathy. “You’re a Germ” is top heavy with screeching guitars and crashing drums that touches on overly creepy affection, but its chorus is delivered in such a way that you can imagine teen fans jumping up and down on their beds singing along into the hairbrush. Things take a slight nosedive when Oddie tries his hand at vocals on “Swallowtail” (Rowsell is far more exciting), and hidden track “The Wonderwhy” is an unnecessary afterthought, but none of that fails to take the shine off an album that actually lives up to its hype for once. pened in February 2013, Entrada brings a little taste of Spain to Jakarta. Tucked away inside an office building right on the edge of SCBD, this elegant establishment is warm and convivial. Copious amounts of dark wood and very welcome dim lighting make for a low-key and laid back spot that’s ideal for a first date.

the Tiger Prawns in Garlic Sauce (65k) was a real revelation; the trio of luscious prawns blended really well with the garlicky sauce, and complemented very nicely with the slice of lemon. Another tapas dish you should try is the Manchengo Cheese Board (85k), which comes with appetizing jamon (ham). A blend made in tapas heaven.

Entrada has amassed a loyal following of discerning locals and expats; the restaurant is a standout performer for scrumptious Spanish staples. The delicious paella and host of tapas never fail to lure diners back every time.

For a more conventional type of starters, try the Entrada Smoked Salmon Salad (65k). It’s a wonderful salad dish with succulent salmon and mixed greens, topped with shaved cheese, almonds, and some nice pomelo. We love the balance of textures and tastes. Meanwhile, the hearty Cream of Mushroom Soup or Seafood Chowder (42k respectively) are real heart-warmers.

Let’s begin with the tasty tapas selection. The Spanish Omelette with Truffle and Mushrooms (55k) was as comforting as it comes. And

FOOD There are more stellar dishes coming out of the kitchen Entrada. Loyal fans return time and again for the well-loved rice dishes. The Entrada Special Paella (285k/385k) is the specialty of the house, but we opted for something darker. In color, that is. The Arroz Negre (155k) won our hearts and tummies. This is a specialty from Valencia and also Catalonia, its a paella-like dish made with rice, cooked with squid ink and topped generously with seafood. Not to be outdone, a plate of pasta called Fideua (155k) also stole the show! Also from Valencia, the thin, angel hair pasta is cooked with saffron (sort of like a paella) and also topped with seafood. And should you feel like a more elaborate meal, go for the Whole Suckling Pig (1,095k/1,995k).

Mind you, you need to reserve one in advance for the restaurant to prepare it. The Churros With Caramel, Vanilla, and Chocolate Sauce (48k) is the ultimate dessert to get here. And of course, you shouldn’t miss the Red or White Sangria (125k/575k) here. Possibly one of the best Sangrias in town, you can get an extra kick for 150k by glass or 700k by jug! Entertain yourselves with Tango dance on Monday evening, or with Social Latin Dance during High Tea on Wednesday. Just watch, or join in! And on Friday and Saturday night, acoustic bands will perform. From tasty tapas to superb sangrias and everything in between, Entrada is an outstanding option for the masses. (Budi Iskandar)

POPOLAMAMA A Japanese-based brand of Italian restaurants in Jakarta? Why not?

Established a little over a year ago, Popolamama offers a unique blend of the Japanese traditions of art and perfection to the longstanding practice of Italian pasta making. Its first outlet opened at Indofood Tower on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, and that’s where we went recently.

Popolamama boasts interesting presentations that play with both texture and flavor. If you’re a fan of Italian fare, the range of yummy starters, pastas, and mains should make you a happy camper. The food here is a joy, as is the service.

The stylish restaurant has become a favorite for the working crowd from the surrounding business area. With a modish minimalist décor, the sleek, clean lines compliment the bright and airy setting nicely. It’s a pleasant spot for a relaxing lunch, but equally adequate for informal business meetings.

The fresh pasta at Popolamama is made from 100% Durum Wheat, ground into Semolina flour. The result is better quality pasta, higher in protein and fiber, and lower gluten counts than the usual ones.The texture is also a little more ‘rubbery’ and ‘wet’, in a good way.

FOOD Since its debut, Popolamama has gone from strength to strength, and it shows with the opening of its new outlets. The Indofood Tower outlet opens only from Monday to Friday, but there are three other locations ready to serve you daily. Very recently, the restaurant made its way to the new AEON Mall in BSD City, Tangerang. It’s the fourth and latest outlet, after Mal Taman Anggrek and Grand Indonesia. All in all, Popolamama is about hearty, comfort cooking that will leave you fully sated. (Budi Iskandar)

Our meal started with the Japanese Mushroom Salad (30k); a blend of Bunashimeji and Eringi mushrooms, with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and doused in a special Japanese dressing and topped with Kizaminori/seaweed. oishi! For a more Italian taste, the Bolognese Potato Gratin (30) is a great choice; potatoes, baked with a generous dousing of Bolognese sauce with cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Another noteworthy Japanese and Italian mix here is presented in the Wafuor soy saucebased pasta, with smoked beef, spinach, and rucola (50k). This East-West combo is a musttry! Purists, though, will find the Genovese Pesto Pasta, with Peperoncino Basil, Potato, and Chicken Sausage (55k) simply irresistible. Of course, we didn’t forget Popolamama’s scrumptious Napoli-style pizzas! The Meat Eater Pizza (Regular size 75k, mini 47k) will certainly satisfy your carnivorous cravings, and seafood lovers should try the Marinara Pizza (72k); a tasty mix of shrimp and squid with cheese and parsley. You do, however, have to try the scrumptious Dolce Pizza. Pizza for dessert? Yes, please! You can try the Chocolate and Cheese, or Mixed Berries pizza. But our favorite goes to the luscious Apple Cinnamon Pizza! All sweet pizzas are priced at 55k.

A striking feature of the interior is the beautiful glass motifs of Ao Dai (Vietnamese traditional dresses) which provide a warm welcome as you step in. The black-and-white photos of old Vietnam on the walls juxtaposing nicely with the dark wood furniture and patterned tiles. Although a newbie, Yeu – which means ‘love’ in Vietnamese – Saigon Café has quickly established a firm following. You can sense that this is a labor of love for the owners. The food contains no MSG, the vegetables organic (coming from their own farm!), providing a healthy, fresh, and authentic Vietnamese dining experience.

The former is beef wrapped in vine leaf, while the latter has chicken. We also tried the Banh Xeo (95k), crispy pancake filled with seafood, mushroom, bean sprout, onion, and vegetables. The proper way to enjoy these dishes is to wrap the main ingredients with the lettuce and other leaves, and then dip them in the special spicy sauce. Your taste buds are going to dance with joy, and you will clean your plate shamelessly! For the main course, we opted for the Bo Luc Lac (155); Vietnamese-style Australian rib eye

beef with a flavorsome garlic fried rice. Simply divine! A tasty tofu dish called Dau Hu Luot Van (95k) accompanied it well. As for dessert, the Coffee Flan (29k )is an ideal choice, and we got a complimentary coconut cake called Banh It Dua. Surely it’s got to be on the menu soon. Complete your experience with the delightful, real Vietnamese Black Coffee (35k). And if coffee isn’t your thing, there are plenty of Vietnamese iced drinks to refresh yourselves. For all things gracefully Vietnamese, Yeu Saigon Café is highly recommended. The menu is superbly executed with ease and love.
