Flying back and forth from Jakarta and Bali can have its good and bad days. The last trip back from Bali I discovered my laptop was missing in the taxi when I arrived to the apartment. Shock, horror, it was like losing my entire working and social life in a flash. After calling the airport to no avail, I had to taxi it back to the airport at 1am to look for it. Nobody knew anything about it at security, but after waking up the Lion staff, since it was now the middle of the night, the guy nodded his head and mumbled “yes, there is a laptop.” I couldn’t believe my luck. I’d like to thank the person who picked it up in the transit bus and gave it to the Lion staff. You have restored my faith in the people around me. That particular weekend was nothing less than a full-on twister with first, The Beat’s Fashion Night Out party at Umbra on the Friday night, which was loads of fun and had the most glamorous crowd in town in attendance before moving up to the northern refines of Kota for more of the nocturnal action. Then the next evening’s Above & Beyond show at Illigals took us on another journey to Kota and a journey into their magnanimous music. The full house there was testament to their popularity in the city. Enjoying dinner at the new French restaurant, Ratatouille on Jalan Rasuna Said topped off a rather interesting weekend. We’re now arriving to one of the busiest times of the year. Christmas may well be over by the time you read this edition but you can check inside for all the details of what’s on around the venues in the lead up and on New Year’s Eve. There is plenty on around the traps so get out and amongst it. This year has been a pretty wild ride from start to finish. On a personal level I never stopped moving back and forth between Jakarta and Bali, one week here and one week there for most of it. It sounds a bit tiring, but in fact, I had a ball and it’s like having the best of both worlds. Jakarta continues being its cliquey, uptight, obnoxious even- self, but on the other hand, the most fun and dynamic city in the region—once you get your head around it. We’d like to wish all our readers, clients, and everyone who has anything to do with helping put this magazine together over the year, a wonderful and prosperous New Year 2013. It looks like it’s going to be a great one.

Intensitas pekerjaan menjadi alasan
utama pembubaran diri—walau bukan berarti para personelnya berhenti bermusik.
O
ne of the most respected bands from the 90’s era, rumahsakit, are back from the dead with their newest album, 1+2. Released on 12/12/12 this is their third album after rumahsakit (1998) and Nol Derajat (2000). A few weeks before the album was released, they distributed their first single, “Bernyanyi Menunggu”, as a teaser for free (online). According to Andri Ashari, the vocalist, the album title 1+2 is based on the fact that some of the songs are taken from the first and second album and re-recorded, while another 4 songs are absolutely new. Completed over two months in early 2012, the album is released under Off The Records/Bravo Musik. Founded in 1994, rumahsakit have created a big buzz from the start. Their group of loyal followers is well established. Their reputation as one out of only a few 90’s alternative local heroes is still strong, and was well evident during their album release party at a bar in Cilandak Town Square on 12th of December. The place was packed with an enthusiastic crowd and quite a few indie-scene veterans were sighted. Keep yourself updated by visiting their official website www.rumahsakitband.com.

olitics has often been referred to as the art of the possible but what is political activity itself all about? If stripped to its bare essentials it’s really how we decide to distribute limited resources (power, influence, money) between competing demands for them.
Quite often, political decision-making can seem like a zero-sum game, in which the winner takes all and the loser gets nothing. (Just ask Mitt Romney and Fauzi Bowo for their respective comments as losers in the recent US presidential and Jakarta gubernatorial elections.) The US is currently preoccupied in a political standoff in the lead-up to the so-called “fiscal cliff” – the dire economic effects that could result in tax increases and spending cuts at the beginning of 2013 if existing laws are not changed by the end of 2012. Buoyed by his recent re-election, President Obama and the Democrat Party are in no mood to give way to the Republicans as the fingerpointing and accusations of intransigence take the heated debate right down to the wire. Equally, newly elected Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo faces critically important negotiations with the central government over the capital’s transportation infrastructure, wanting to ensure that whatever solutions are chosen produce genuine benefits without financially crippling the city administration for generations to come. In both cases it’s likely that a decision will be taken that does not address all problems completely but nonetheless allows those concerned to feel they have benefitted somehow. It’s called a compromise: By both sides giving a little, a zero-sum outcome can be avoided and face saved. Just keep an eye on both of these issues and see how the term “compromise” starts
to be used more frequently as D-day approaches. Luckily for us, the humdrum decisions we take as individuals on a day-to-day basis are rarely a zero-sum matter. For example, an extra 10 minutes spent over breakfast in the morning may mean you have to rush that much more to ensure you catch your regular bus or train to work on time. Or that additional drink you might choose to have after work with colleagues will require an extra half-hour in the gym next morning to work off the increased calorie intake. In both examples the decision is entirely ours but more often than not we can arrive at a solution that balances out the costs with the benefits: Take five extra minutes at breakfast rather than 10 and you won’t have to rush so much to the station. Make it a single rather than a double at the bar and feel inwardly virtuous later at your self-control. In our dealings with others (friends, relations, work colleagues) we often find that what they want to do or achieve may not exactly coincide with what we want: An unpleasant disagreement can be avoided if both parties are prepared to give a little. An ability to compromise requires tolerance of difference in others. In a world as diverse as the one we all live in, that must surely be no bad thing. Compromising does not mean abandoning the core beliefs or principles we hold dear but being prepared to engage in a bit of give-andtake to arrive at an acceptable solution. In that sense compromise – like politics – is all about the art of the possible. Being prepared to compromise when necessary may just be the New Year’s resolution we would do well to adopt. All the best for 2013! (Jim Read)

THE FIRST
VNC FLAGSHIP STORE IN INDONESIA by grisselda niharja
VNC
www.beatmag.com
has opened its first flagship store in Kelapa Gading Mall 2 on 5 December 2012. The store itself is pretty big compared to the others. With 2,500 square meters, lots of shoes, bags and accessories are displayed everywhere. This is heaven on earth for women. Since I live in Kelapa Gading, I’m so happy to know that this store is nearby. Kelapa Gading Mall is one of the great malls in Jakarta when it comes to the crowd. The VNC store opening was flocked by media, socialites, VIP customers, and young, successful women. I could tell people were ßber excited about this store. No wonder, because VNC offers affordable, good quality products. For those of you who love flat shoes, (killer) high heels, wedges, sandals, bags, necklaces, sunglasses, and other accessories, I bet this shop is for you.

We also had the chance to see models showcased some looks. I could see a lot of varieties that we can create ourselves. It just made me want to mix and match the shoes, bags and some accessories! I really had a hard time stopping myself from trying those shoes because I made a promise not to buy more things (but ended up buying 3 sunglasses *sigh*). But anyway, if you’re looking to find a holiday gift for your mom, girlfriend, sister or anyone, I believe you can find some good stuff in VNC.
If you have a BNI Credit Card, you will get special privileges. With a minimum purchase of IDR 350,000, you’ll get a pair of sandals for free. And an additional 5% off for all BNI Credit Cardholders until February 2013. Have you visited the store? :)

MY NEW CLEANSING ROUTINE
WITH BIORE MAKEUP REMOVER
by grisselda niharja
T
he first thing that I do when I get home, after taking off my shoes and putting my bag away, is remove my makeup. I do realize my skin needs to breathe after being “tortured” for 12 hours, or maybe longer than that. The only chance for my skin to take a breather is at night, so even when I postpone my bath time to midnight, I don’t compromise when it comes to cleaning my face. I just have to do it right away. I bet most of you already know, I’m in love with Biore. Since I’ve been using new products from Biore, I think it’s time that I show you a little bit of my new cleansing routine.
www.beatmag.com
1
Biore Makeup Remover for Eye & Lip (IDR 86,500) - The eyes are always the first to be cleansed *at least, for me* Since I have sensitive eyes, I can’t use regular makeup remover, because no matter how gentle they claimed to be, it stings. I used to use baby oil to remove my eye makeup. The only thing with baby oil is that it bothers me when the bottle starts to feel sticky-when I pour it on the cotton pad, some oil would leak. Not to mention, my eyes would be oily afterwards. When I found out that Biore launched their Makeup Remover for Eye & Lip, I couldn’t resist to try it. It feels very gentle on my eyes, and it doesn’t leave that much oil on my eyelids. I LOVE it. It claims to dissolve thick layers of waterproof mascara without leaving an oily residue. It also contains Hyaluronic acid that helps to maintain moisture of the eyes and lip area. All I have to do is shake the bottle, pour enough on a cotton pad, and swipe it gently around my eyes or lips. This is my new staple item.
2
Biore Makeup Remover Cleansing Oil Sheet (IDR 100,000, and the Refill retails for IDR 86,500) - I feel like I won’t get a truly cleansed face if I wash my fully made up face right away. I’ve used cleansing milk on a cotton pad to help me wipe off my makeup, but since makeup tissue remover came to Indonesia, I’ve been using it routinely. It’s easier and more practical. Last month, Deszell and I went to Guardian Plaza Indonesia. At that time Deszell bought Biore Makeup Remover Cleansing Oil Sheet and said this product works great, so I bought one as well. And I am so happy to know that now it comes in a box! It has 40 sheets that can last for a month and I can buy the refill later. This is a perfect product at home because the “sachet” version only contains 10 sheets and in my opinion only perfect for travel or to bring with you everyday because of its small packaging.

Biore Makeup Remover Cleansing Oil (IDR 86,500) - Now, this product is a bit of a challenge for me. To be honest, I’m not fond of the idea of using OIL to cleanse my skin. I have sensitive skin at the moment and it feels like I don’t need to put more oil onto my skin. But since I’ve decided to use other makeup remover products from Biore, I figured why not just try this cleansing oil? When my skin was flawless back in junior and high school, I used Biore products for years and my skin had no problem. Why not now? After I massage this cleansing oil on my face (3 to 4 pumps), I use a sponge that has been soaked in warm water to wipe it all, and then rinse it off with water. I think I’ll continue using this product. I have tried cleansing oil from other brands and Biore Makeup Remover Cleansing Oil is gentler on my skin, it’s not as oily as I’ve previously imagined, and it has no scent that bothers me which is another plus. I use it after I cleanse my face with the cleansing oil sheet, or using it on its own also does the job.
Okay, I know that toner is part of skincare products and not a makeup remover, but you know, I also use toner to check whether or not I’ve thoroughly cleansed my face. Overall, I’m happy with these three and will definitely repurchase them! Have you tried one of these? What do you think, ladies?
www.beatmag.com
I only have one question: Where’s your toner, Biore?

A Baroque Kind of Christmas
www.beatmag.com
By Erza S.T.
However, aside from churches, Jakarta also has commercial Christmas concerts to offer. One of them being Aula Simfonia Jakarta: Baroque Christmas Concert that will be performed on Christmas Day. Playing it to their forte, it is not a surprise to see their theme selection for this year. As expected, you will definitely find Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s favorite composers such as Bach and Handel. Lead by Dr. Billy Christianto as the conductor, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and Jakarta Oratorio Society will perform Bach’s popular “Christmas Oratorio” (part 1), Corelli’s “Christmas Concerto” and Handel’s organ concerto “Cuckoo and the Nightingale” - featuring organist Lina Runtuwene. Soprano Sylvia Wiryadi and Tenor Jethro Rachmadi are going to be featured as well in this concert. Lina Runtuwene is one of a few organists in town and she has studied music at Yayasan Pendidikan Music school in Manggarai area since she was six years old. Her first introduction to organ was led under the guidance of Mr Harry van Dop in Jakarta before she continued her study at Netherlands Instituut boor Kerkmuziek in Utrecht, Netherlands
for five years with Prof. Willem Tanke. She now teaches at the Institute Reformed Jakarta since 2002 and also is the organist for Reformed Injil Indonesia Church in Kemayoran, Jakarta. Aside from this stunning piece, the orchestra with two talented pianists: Indah L. Hertanto and Jusniaty Chitra will also perform another compositions by Bach: a concerto for four pianos - which is quite rare. Last, but not least, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra will also perform one of the most famous melodies from baroque era and it is none other then Pachelbel’s “Canon in D Major”. Originally composed for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue in the same key, this composition was actually forgotten for centuries and was rediscovered only in the 20th century. It was not until 1919 when scholar Gustav Beckmann included this score on his article about Pachelbel’s chamber music. Pachelbel’s Canon merges a strict polyphonic form (the canon) and a variation form (the chaconne, which itself is a mixture of ground bass composition and variations). Pachelbel skillfully constructs the variations to make them both pleasing and subtly undetectable. Several decades after the canon was first published, the piece became extremely popular and now it’s often played at weddings.

Muse
The 2nd Law
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
H
aving recorded a first album and actually turning a bit of cash from this music lark, most normal rock stars would probably go out and buy a nice shiny new car or perhaps, if your name is Pete Doherty go out on a booze and drug-fuelled binge to celebrate your own success. Not Matt Bellamy though. Ohhhh no, not even close. As soon as his first cheque arrived in the post from the record company the flamboyant Muse frontman decided that it would be a good idea to go out and purchase a working prototype jetpack. Mad? Possibly. Eccentric? Undoubtably, and that is precisely why Muse are a band that everyone should listen to, they remind us that music can and should be big, loud, ridiculous, outlandish and earth shattering, but never take itself too seriously. Equal parts Radiohead, Queen and Ludwig Van Beethoven, the Devon three-piece are a musical anomaly amongst your average cardboard cut-out indie shoegazers; live shows that resemble a Broadway musical organized by people on acid, shiny stage attire that would make even Ziggy Stardust look more like an ad for The Gap, and an extreme paranoia of the paranormal that has seen the band members insisting that they hold press interviews in helicopters for fear of falling asteroids/UFOs.
Ever since the space rock bombast of 2002’s Origin of Symmetry, Muse LPs have grown ever more outlandish and absurd – the theatricals on Black Holes and Revelations or The Resistance often a smokescreen that, once blown away, reveal songs that actually don’t stack up to much in terms of listenability. The 2nd Law feels different though – still completely bonkers, yes, but there is a more consistent, accessible quality running through it. Having said that, Bellamy was quoted as saying that album number six would be a “Christian gangsta-rap jazz odyssey, with some ambient rebellious dubstep and face-melting metal flamenco cowboy psychedelia,” and he’s not far wrong so it’s hard to know what to think really. “Supremacy” unfolds in much the same way as a James Bond movie opening sequence – sexy, cinematic and dangerous, but with the raised eyebrow of Mooreish (Roger) innuendo cocked throughout. “Madness” is the sort of thing that Chris Martin would love to have written were he not such a predictable bore, and the dubstep fuzz-out “Unsustainable” highlights a band at the peak of their confidence and creativity. “Vengeance is mine/and I won’t give in” croons Bellamy on London 2012 Olympic war cry “Survival” over a chorus of sopranos before all hell breaks loose, but herein lies the problem; more often than not the whole thing comes off like theatre for theatrical’s sake. That’s not to say the spectacle of the music or Bellamy’s falsetto is not enormous fun though - just keep your good glassware away from the speakers. Dan Ashcroft

It’s watching this movie with some homemade popcorn!
(with a lover or best friend girl)

1. New Year’s Eve (2011)
Some of its stories can be considered as PG13 rating, but for teenagers and adults, this would be the best choice of film if you’re looking for a festivity-themed film to welcome your countdown for a brand new year with sweet valuable life lessons.
(with a lover or best friend girl)
2. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
For the fans of romantic movies, this one surely has to be on top of your list. The iconic romantic scene, when Harry races through streets in Times Square to profess his undying love to Sally and kiss her right before the ball drops, is a fairty tale to dream of.
(with buddies for a boy’s night out)
3. Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)
Not the best festive way to spend the last night of the year protecting his shuttered precinct against some gang of criminals for sure, but boys like it when the adrenaline pumps, kicking in for an action-packed countdown to New Year’s, right? Shoot them guns up in the air!

Ratatouille Bistro and Bar opened over a month ago and has been kicking goals ever since. The décor isn’t a lot to talk about and the booming effects of the echoing sound of punters talking and laughing isn’t very pleasant, but at least they have punters. And not just any punters. We visited on a Saturday night recently and the place was jumping, pretty well packed and the guests were an even mix of Euros and locals. Now, every time I walk into a restaurant claiming to be French or European of any nature in this country and the place is full of Euros I know we’re onto something. Those European people love their food and they never stand for second rate (for very long, anyway). The menu was very French and the prices were very reasonable. It doesn’t take much to sum that up to equal, pretty bloody good. So I would recommend you going down to Jl Rasuna Said to try this restaurant out. It appears to be the real thing, a French bistro, and what we tried from the menu that evening was right on the mark. However, the house wine could have been better.

AMBIENTE Italian Restaurant
With an elegant ambiance and spot-on service, this renowned restaurant makes your Italian culinary experience here a winner.

T
he Aryaduta Hotel has been one of Jakarta’s most respected hotels for decades. When I was younger, I had great memories of dining at the hotel’s coffee shop with my parents for some of the best buffet spreads in town. This time though, I had the chance to visit the hotel again for a lunch meeting at the Italian restaurant, Ambiente. A stalwart of Italian cuisine in Jakarta, Ambiente continues to maintain its reputation as an institution despite fierce competition. Established in 1989, Ambiente was the first Italian fine dining restaurant in Jakarta. It
offers an elegant Italian dining experience in a fabulous setting that makes it one of Jakarta’s best. The well-trained and efficient staff makes a difference too, so you’d be just as comfortable having a business luncheon as you would a family get together, and even a romantic date. This is definitely one of the go-to spots when you truly want to impress. With plush chairs and soft carpeting, the interior is simply graceful. You can sit by the glass windows overlooking the bustling traffic around Tugu Tani statue (Better for the evening, me thinks), or in one of the two private rooms. The friendly staff informed me about the important

names in business, politics, and entertainment that have used these private rooms over the years. If the walls could talk, I wonder what great stories they could tell us! My little lunch meeting went smoothly. The delectable dishes also did their part, too. If you’re an aficionado of Italian fare, the range of delicious starters, pastas, and mains at Ambiente should make you a happy camper.
But the Grilled US Tenderloin (380k) was a real standout performer. What a divine dish! I ordered the steak medium (as recommended by the staff), and the meat was put on a bed of wonderful walnut risotto, topped with decadent foie gras, and served with a port wine sauce. In a word, sublime! A glass of Tuscany Chianti, Da Vinci (800k/
bottle) rounded up our fruitful meeting. But I also couldn’t pass up the delicious dessert. The fantastic Frozen Lemon Mousse (65k) was my pick. Served with a citrus thyme sabayon, this is one desert you should make room for. And my single shot of Espresso (50k) provided the perfect coda. Undoubtedly one of Jakarta’s most well-known and highly regarded restaurants, Ambiente can always be counted on to deliver. It’s no mystery why regulars keep coming back for more. And I will definitely come back here; there’s a Veal Chop (399k) with my name on it. This is a favorite of many; veal in creamy mushroom sauce, served with spaghetti, garlic, and some chili oil. Now, that’ll be just grand! So, if you’re looking to make an impression, the combination of delicious dishes and enthusiastic service make Ambiente a real winner. (Budi Iskandar)

The regulars here, like my meeting partners, have their own favorite dishes. But I got to sample some of their delicious newer creations. The Spaghetti And Prawns (145k) was an excellent choice; al dente spaghetti combined well with tomato, garlic, olive oil, chili, some succulent prawns, and topped with rocket leaves lettuce.

On the lower level, there’s “Le Jardin”; with a serene setting and relaxed garden (with real plants!) ambiance that will put you at ease. Check out the cute little flower shop there, too. With such lush greenery, you will forget about the Jakarta traffic below. Le Jardin serves lighter, more comfort food-type dishes than its neighbor upstairs.
of their unique concoctions; the Parmagiano Cocktail (120k) – a mix of Belvedere vodka, chamomile tea, choco blanc syrup, fresh milk, a pinch of salt, and garnished with parmesan cheese! – Quite nice, actually; and the cheese added a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to the taste. The afternoon lights from the huge windows gave way to multihued evening illumination. Time for dinner!

rom the people that brought you Ocha & Bella, comes a pretty place that’ll win the hearts of foodies in Jakarta. Moovina is located in Plaza Indonesia shopping mall smack dab in the middle of the capital city. Opened just a couple of months ago, and it’s actually two restaurants in one.
We moved from the stylish lounge area to our table. The dining area is spacious and comfortable. Just make sure that the clean lines and refined, minimalist décor don’t distract your attention from what it should be focused on: the food, of course! You can look forward to new and exciting ways to experience these “Mezzanine” is the other one, which is situated quality ingredients and superb cooking (and on the upper floor. Next up the Confit De Canard (160k), this was done very nicely. The duck leg confit is served on a small pan, with some tasty garlic potatoes and green veggies. C’est délicieux! Then came a dish called Os A Moelle Grille (70k). What a masterpiece! The heavenly rich grilled bone marrow is served with red onion marmalade, some scrumptious country bread, and salad on the side with a tangy vinaigrette dressing. This is the way to indulge oneself! Highly recommended. The fruit-flavored ice tea selections (38k each) are perfect to wash down all those food. As for dessert, the delightful Gelée De Fruits Rouges Au Porto (50k) was our pick; red fruits jelly, flavored with red port wine. We also tried the Pavlova (50k) - crisp meringue with lemon sherbet, seasonal fruits, and passion fruit coulis –another excellent ending to our evening. There are still plenty of items on the menu that are worth a look here. Another visit is a must. Or shall we try “Le Jardin” next? Maybe we’ll see you there! (Budi Iskandar)

First Impressi on returni ons to Jakart ng a Text: Su Lyn Siria Ng
I
am always startled whenever I arrive in Jakarta. The structure and neatness of Sydney, where I’ve been satying the last couple of years, is nothing like the haphazard dynamism of this city. As such Jakarta wastes no time with making anyone feel at home, the unique blend of terrible traffic, confusion, and noise will be sure to welcome everyone outside the airport. There is always some type of silent contentment towards returning home. Deep inside, there is a feeling of expansion, “It’s good to be back”. In the car, the AC stops functioning and can feel the humidity sticking onto me. The traffic isn’t moving much and a trip that’s meant to be taking half an hour seems to need three hours. This has become an exercise of patience. I look out the window and begin to worry. So much seems to have changed. Jakarta looks so different! Is this the Jakarta I once knew? Outside, the city has been almost entirely transformed. Jakarta is now truly urban, made beautiful by glass skyscrapers and numerous malls. Malls, Malls, Malls. The new generation malls have sprung out of nowhere and are everywhere. Just being able to recall the time when there was just a Plaza Senayan and no Sency, a PI without a GI, and a PIM1 without its PIM2 makes me feel somewhat ancient.

Change or no change, Jakarta has never failed to impress. Her heart thrums with countless lights; new and old shining through the night. Her pulse is her many people. Jakarta has many secrets as well. Beneath the façade of the many STARBUCKS signs everywhere, new exclusive venues appear (and sometimes disappear) out of the blue. There are now so many more places for the nocturnal to thrive in. Life is exciting here. But at home, at the crack of dawn, is where and when I know that my Jakarta is still my Jakarta. When the night bugs stop chirping, somewhere a cock crows and the nearby mosque welcomes a new day. I watch the sky between the glass towers as the birds sing happily. Pink, and yellow swirls spill across the horizon. I watch as the Jakartan lights begin to dwindle and the clamor begins again. The city rouses and amidst this short stretch of serenity, the words “It’s good to be back” echo once more.
