What started as an isolated flash-flood in Kampung Pulo on Tuesday (15/1), an area commonly struck by flash floods, escalated to a full-on flood disaster across Jakarta overnight. From the Presidential palace, to historic Bundaran HI, to Jakarta suburbs of Bekasi and Tangerang, water swept in and caused havoc everywhere. As a precaution, the electric company had to cut power to affected areas to prevent electrocution, and people couldn’t get to hospitals as some of the hospitals were also evacuated as they were flooded. Experts on the matter say that Jakarta was hit by flash floods “sent” from the mountain region of Bogor, from the North sea water came rushing in, and all over town non-stop rain for days was the source of all of the water that caused rivers to spill and dikes to fail. Even when the city is dry, traffic is horrendous; the floods basically brought the morning and afternoon rush hour to a halt. As a result, every morning Jakartans would have to make the tough call to either go to the office or not. Many of course wished that their office blasted an email telling them to stay in their pajamas, which for the most part never happened. Some didn’t even bother to try, some did and soon u-turned home, and some others eventually arrived in their office after three to four hours stuck in traffic. The big question on everybody’s mind was “When will things be back to normal?” If there’s any good news it’s that the floods last week were not as massive as the one that happened back in 2007. The floods affected everyone in the city, and entertainment was definitely the last thing on the people’s mind. However, the floods got people to unite and “entertain” the less fortunate. A sense of camaraderie was strong amongst the people, where stranger genuinely helped stranger - not a common sight in the big durian during normal days. People from various groups organised to distribute food and clothes all across the affected areas. Others basically just helped wherever they could with their bare hands in some cases. Despite the crime opportunity during the disaster, no one was seen stealing or robbing, which made the city feel bizarrely safe considering the situation. We hope that will be the last of the floods we’ll see for some time. Rain, rain go away, come back here another day.

Hard Rock Café Jakarta 011

s c o o p

Hard Rock Café Jakarta held a New Year’s party that was also their closing party which doesn’t mean that the café will be closed permanently, but it will move location. Since January 1, the previous location at eX was officially closed, and the closing party was also well received by the guests. The occasion was sentimental for the staff, since they have been working together for eight years at eX Mall. But 2013 will be a good start for Hard Rock Café Jakarta, when they move to a new location at Pacific Place with extra elements and concepts. It is said that the new location will be opened early May.

Ari Lasso To celebrate his 20-year music career in Indonesia, Ari Lasso will hold a solo concert on Saturday, February 23 at Plenary Hall, Jakarta Convention Center. Since February is the month of love, the concert will also present something romantic. Titled “Sang Dewa Cinta”, Lasso will work together with Andi Rianto and his Magenta Orchestra, and include songs from his time in the group Dewa 19, where he was a vocalist, and his solo hits, such as “Rahasia Perempuan”, “Misteri Ilahi”, “Hampa”, “Aku dan Dirimu”, and more. There will also be some from fellow musicians in the concert.

Atomic Fest 2013 Let us for a while turn our eyes and ears away from the big shots in music industry to the new wave of bands. On February 19, the Atomic Festival 2013 will be held at Plaza Selatan Senayan Jakarta. It is alright to say that this event is going to be crowded with up and coming bands; they are Sleeping With Sirens, Chunk No Captain Chunk!, Pierce The Veil and Woe Is Me. Three out of those four bands are from the US, except for Chunk No Captain Chunk! who are from France. Sleeping With Sirens has even confirmed their upcoming presence in Jakarta on their official website, furthermore, SWS’ show in Jakarta is a part of their Asian Tour. If you don’t know anything about them, it’s time to show up at Atomic Fest 2013, and see them for yourselves.

In February this year, this Dutch rock band will perform three times in Indonesia. After their successful raecent Dutch tour, they are trying to spread their wings to the rest of the world. Only Seven Left (OSL) comprises of Bjorgen (vocals), Roderick (piano), Hinne (bass) and Bram (drum). Their music is considered melancholic rock with melody elements inspired by dance music. They have been described as a blend of Katy Perry, Two Door Cinema Club and 30 Seconds To Mars. The band now has their chance to present their music in front of the Indonesian audience and their single titled ‘Higher’ has been achieving a lot of air time on local radio and via social networks by interested Indonesians who have even organized an online competition where the winners will be able to join OSL at Erasmus Huis on February 16.

Karena kualitasnya pula, Guy J tampil dalam panggung raksasa seperti Global Gathering, Tomorrowland and tur ke berbagai belahan dunia. Guy learned to be a producer when he was 14 years old, and after amassing a large amount of gear and experience, released his first tracks when he was 21. By this time, he started to appear in clubs and became popular in the dance music scene in Israel. At first, Guy was a fan of trance and progressive music, but recently drifted towards techno and house, particularly deep house. He would eventually mix all of these elements into his music and released his debut album under the Bedrock label. Seeing Guy’s outstanding skill, John Digweed was one of his early proponents and he regularly gigs at huge shows such as Global Gathering, Tomorrowland, and tours all over the world.

Guy J is on his way to Jakarta to appear at Stadium. So just get up to Stadium on Saturday night February 2 and let the journey begin.

Momentum

www.beatmag.com

Unlike politicians, we have more control over the personal commitments we make

That time has now arrived for Jakarta Governor Joko (“Jokowi”) Widodo, and it seems that his honeymoon with the public may already be over, despite being hailed the world’s third-best mayor by the World Mayor project. (This was for his achievements in Solo, Central Java, ranking just behind the mayors of Bilbao, Spain and Perth, Australia.)

Obama is currently engaged in a bitter debate with US Republicans over the formal decision to raise the US “debt ceiling” to enable bills already incurred by Congress to be paid. In his first term the same issue arose but he backed down at the last moment to avoid a shutdown of the government. This time, he says, he will not blink as he stares down his political foes in this high-stakes game of federal financial “chicken”. Having gained political momentum a few weeks ago over the issue of the so-called “fiscal cliff”, he is in no mood to lose it at this early phase in his second term.

Articles have already started to criticize Jokowi’s support for plans to build six elevated inner city toll roads – originally initiated when former governor Sutiyoso was in office – saying Jokowi is sending out confusing messages, given his well-known commitment towards public transportation approaches to the capital’s traffic problems.

What about the momentum that we’re all challenged to maintain as individuals? How many of you have already abandoned New Year resolutions made in those heady days of late December when you promised yourself that you would visit the gym more regularly, set yourself measurable personal fitness targets or give up smoking, even though we’re only 20 or so days into January?

Although he wisely avoided making campaign promises that were easily quantifiable, Jokowi is currently in a classic “no-win” situation, where whatever he does is likely to annoy a substantial proportion of the city’s population. Meanwhile, the doomsday scenario of Jakarta traffic gridlock by 2014, described by experts and commentators alike, looms ever closer.

The key to maintaining this kind of momentum – and I speak from personal experience here – is to make your resolution an integral element of your regular daily routine. Ultimately, we’re all creatures of habit; once your resolution has become part of this habit it will no longer seem like an additional chore or burden.

A politician who did make a number of measurable campaign promises was US presidential candidate Barack Obama when he first ran for office back in 2008. One of these was his commitment to shut Guantanamo Bay, the detention centre where many terrorism suspects are currently held.

What’s more, you’ll eventually feel that something’s missing from your day if you’re unable to commit to that resolution for whatever reason. You’ll also find it encouraging that if you’ve managed to keep your resolution going by the end of January there’s every chance it will still be in place by the end of this year.

The prison is still open and will likely remain so even when Obama leaves office after his second term. The inability to deliver on that promise is more an indication of the intractability of the political, practical and logistical problems it raised than any lack of political will on behalf of the president.

Jakarta 2013 :

The International Who’s Who and Mega Concerts

Tak cuma respons penonton yang amat menggembirakan tapi sebaliknya juga Rivers Cuomo dkk berkomentar nan membesarkan hati via akun Twitter-nya: “… was last night’s epic show a dream? No, it was real. Big ups to the amazing fans of Indonesia!” Berikut daftar para artis mancanegara papan atas yang telah memastikan diri tampil: 23 Februari - The Stone Roses 1 Maret - Joss Stone, Lisa Stansfield, Bob James, Spyro Gyra, Basia (Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2013) 10 Maret - Adam Lambert 20 Maret - Bloc Party 28 April - Nile 10 Mei - Sigur Rós 4 Juli - Java Rockin’Land (nama-nama penampil utama belum didistribusikan ke publik namun biasanya tidak mengecewakan) 20 September - Java Soulnation (nama-nama penampil utama masih digodok, namun mereka adalah juga penyelenggara Java Rockin’Land, kualitas artis luar negeri yang didatangkan umumnya brilian). K

Ha.

Things have changed. With each year that has passed Jakarta by, bigger and better names have been appearing across the capital’s billboards. And last year, a month didn’t pass without Jakarta having hosted a massive artist; Guns N’ Roses and Sting (December), Jeniffer Lopez (November), Maroon 5 (October), Keane (September), The Cardigans (August), David Cook (July), Jason Mraz and NKOTB+BSB (June), Morrissey (May), Yes (April), Anthrax (March), Evanescence (February), and Katy Perry and Rod Stewart (January). The even better news is that each and every one of those concerts were bursting at the seams with punters—so everyone is clearly happy with the scene these days. For 2013, the musical optimism is set to continue. Weezer already showed up in the second week of January and played a hugely successful show. So amazed were they by their Jakarta audience that they couldn’t help but morning after tweet: “... was last night’s epic show a dream? No, it was real. Big ups to the amazing fans of Indonesia!”

ndonesia may not be the poorest country in the world, but it isn’t exactly the wealthiest either. The country’s capital Jakarta, renowned for it’s pulsating political activism and is regularly under fire as a consequence of the fragile state of the national economy and the nation’s low health standards, and of course, its infamous traffic jams. Seriously, ride your bike or catch a bemo. Jakarta should be causing a stir in the music scene. On par with Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong, Jakarta’s music scene is clearly one of the richest in Asia. It wasn’t so long ago that the best big name international artists those in the Big Durian could hope to host would have been some second or third rate act, with the addition of a few desperate has-beens passing through on the off chance that they may be able to jack up their album sales or salvage their reputation.

Get ready for more big name artist action. Confirmed to play Jakarta in the coming months are; The Stone Roses (February 23rd), Joss Stone, Lisa Stansfield, Bob James, Spyro Gyra, and Basia (March 1st, during Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2013), Adam Lambert (March 10th), Bloc Party (March 20th), Nile (April 28th), Sigur Rós (May 10th), Java Rockin’Land (July 4th, artists names are yet to be publicly confirmed but the organizers know their stuff and are likely to be bringing in the who’s who of famous acts), Java Soulnation (September 20th, same organiser as Java Rockin’Land, similar modus operandi), and so on. THE CLASSIC by Amalia Hayati

inimal is an Indonesian brand founded in 2003 and they’ve grown to 75 standalone stores that exist in 33 cities in Indonesia. They provide on-trend fashion with premium quality, yet still maintain affordable pricing. If previously I’ve always associated Minimal with a more office attire and mature look, this image has been slated clean with their holiday 2012 collection and especially when I had the chance to preview their Spring 2013 collection. Their collection has really grown to something that is very up to the season, vibrant, sleek and beyond what I previously had in mind for Minimal. Of course the understated clean look is still there, but there is also an upbeat feel about this season’s collection, especially with the Gold collection that really feels luxurious. Gold is an exclusive line that offers Minimal customers what they call their affordable luxurious collection – which means they’re still priced at below 800k despite the expensive feel to its look.

The minimal Gold collection that shows a strong Chinese heritage combined with Indonesian.

What about the Spring 2013 collection? All I can say is that I can’t wait for them to hit the stores! It should be any day now. They’re very vibrant because of the injection of bright colours and refreshing prints, but still maintain the feminine casual look of Minimal that is also sleek. You will see this season’s signature trends all over the collection – contrasting collars, plackets, peplums, sequins and sheer. My favourite part is their interpretation of the denim on denim look as well as the classic white shirt which will be big this season. For this season’s Gold collection, the inspiration comes from the mix of Indonesian and Chinese cultures translated into the prints of the collection combined with silhouette such as dipped hem skirt, peplum as well as Chinese collars. The Spring 2013 collection will be available in store from the second week of January 2013 and also through their website: www.minimal.co.id. The mini denim collection made of lightweight material that is perfect for our weather.

ast month, M.A.C launched their Glamour Daze collection in Indonesia. I went to the event and saw a makeup demo there at SOGO Plaza Senayan. The makeup artist said, with this collection, we can go neutral or glam up the look and they have a quite range of colours. For those of you M.A.C lovers out there, you probably want to have something new from this collection. The Glamour Daze collection comes with five lipsticks, five lip glosses, three blushes, three fluid lines (they have pearls in it!), four kohl power eye pencils, two extra dimension skin finishes, eight extra dimension eye shadows, one mascara, and four nail lacquers. I’m also interested in the Extra Dimension Skinfinishes, probably they were my second favourite after the lipsticks. When I swatched them, the glow and the shimmer was very lovely. They are probably those

kind of products where a little goes a long way. Just with a little dab, you get that stunning glow. I believe you’ll need years until you hit pan. Anyway, the collection will be available until the end of this January. So if you want to buy something from this particular collection, ladies, you better hurry. We can find M.A.C Cosmetics store at SOGO Pondok Indah Mall 2, SOGO Plaza Senayan, Seibu Grand Indonesia and Metro Pacific Place.

Indonesia is definitely a land rich in folklore. From the story of Lake Toba in Sumatra Island to the legend of magic stone in Irian Jaya, Indonesia with its cultural diversities and is actually a heaven for any composer these days to find inspiration. In the past we have seen some Indonesian folklores transformed into classical music compositions such as Loro Jonggrang opera by Trisuci Kamal as well as Calon Arang contemporary musical and Tan Malaka opera by Tony Prabowo. This coming February, we are going to see another Indonesian folk story transformed into a musical drama and its name is Sangkuriang.

c l a s s i c a l

In

the classical music world we recognize many great compositions that are built from local folklore such as Rossini’s La Cenerentola (the story of Cinderella) and William Tell, Humperdink’s Hansel und Gretel, Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle, Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Orff’s Carmina Burana and many more. Folklore stories have fantasy and a moral to the story. They usually have lots of drama and are popular amongst the people. These are the reasons why folklore still remains one of a great sources of inspiration when it comes to composing a new piece, whether it’s opera or musical.

Sangkuriang is one of most famous West Java folklores, where people still believe this story is the legend behind the Tangkuban Perahudomant volcano in Bandung. Sangkuriang is actually a name of a young man who is also the descendant of the gods. He loves his mother: Dayang Sumbi so much that he wanted to marry her. But Dayang Sumbi is trying to reject him by giving a challenge to build a magnificent ship to sail in, for just one night. Sangkuriang with all his power agreed to this challenge for fulfilling his own lust. He summons the army of demons to start helping him build this ship at high speed. Dayang Sumbi thinks fast and she waved a white cloth to the sun that it is morning time. Sangkuriang was very upset and he kicked this unfinished ship. Where the ship landed now believed to be the Tangkuban Perahudomant volcano. This Indonesian version of Greek’s Oedipus is going to be on the musical stage with a composition by Dian HP and Avip Priatna with his Jakarta Concert Orchestra as well as Parahyangan University Choir. Renowned Indonesian classical singers such as Farman Purnama and Gabriel Harvianto will both play the role of Sangkuriang, with Sita Nursanti (from ex pop group: Rida Sita Dewi) as Dayang Sumbi. Wawan Sofyan will direct this production and he chooses the libretto based on Utuy Atang Sontani version of Sangkuriang.

It thrills and excites me to see another Indonesian folk legend becoming a musical. Hopefully we can see more of this kind of production in the future. Meanwhile, make sure you don’t miss out to see this one.

ota Kasablanka mall is steadily becoming the latest favorite place for Jakarta’s foodies. There are quite a number of restaurants here, and the newly opened Paviljoen Kota is one of them. This is a place with an old-style ambiance, like the Dutch colonial days in Indonesia way back when. We know that making a place like this inside an ultra modern shopping mall might be a bit of a stretch, but kudos to Paviljoen Kota for doing their best to make it happen.

The food can also be described as a convergence of Dutch favorites with traditional Indonesian touches. Comfort food, if you will. Take for instance the appetizers; they are typically Dutch, but they have somehow found a new home in Indonesia. Case in point is the Dutch salad Huzarensla (30k) or the red bean soup, Bruine Bonen Soep (35k). You must have had these dishes at least once in your lifetime. The Bitterballen (30k) is also a popular snack here; balls of flour filled with chicken and mushroom mix, served with a home made dip made with mayonnaise, mustard, and honey.

The mishmash of old-fashioned furniture is a nice touch. Some knick knacks and decorations also add to the atmosphere of days gone by. The restaurant itself has two dining areas; the intimate inside area, and the airy ‘terrace’ area.

One of our intrepid writers jots in her diary about her experiences of the Jakarta flood.

MONSOON the flood, but the loud whirls gradually weakened and became quite pathetic. It stopped midway; much to my horror, mobil mogok, they called it.

Day 1:

Have finally arrived in Jakarta again. Humid, dusty, dark and cloudy Jakarta. A perfect break from the abysmal German cold. It was so kind of my beautiful C to let me stay. I must make more of an effort to keep in touch with people.

Day 2:

Went to a mall called Central Park for C’s birthday. Was raining quite heavily today, so the roofless center of the mall (which held a park resembling New York’s Central Park- hence the name, I suppose) was incredibly wet and slippery. The place was quite hip and had a bar called Societie+. It had great drinks - cheap too. There was no one we knew from Sydney, except N, and boy, was she cold! Well, no surprises there! Of all the friends C has, the closest just has to be as cold as ice.

Day 3:

www.beatmag.com

Kebon Jeruk where C lives is flooded. She tried to apologize. She said, “It happens often, but never this bad.” There’s little need for guilt though, why else am I really here but to be with her? On our way back from a good night out, C’s giant car broke down as it attempted to brave the rising waters. It went in strong at first, battling

We had to hitch up our pants and tread shindeep through the brown murk in the dark. It looked like we weren’t the only ones suffering. A family of five rats was also battling the swirling current.

Day 4:

Will this rain ever cease? “Four dead”, the TV says, before the power is cut.

Day 5:

Once while flipping through an inflight magazine, I came across an article that couldn’t stop gushing (no pun intended) about Indonesia’s sexy monsoon season. Oh, how I beg to differ! The water has reached the porch and I’ve managed to miss my flight to Sydney.

Day 6:

We took our chances when the rain abated and escaped in N’s diesel Kijang. The adrenaline from our adventure dissipated quickly at the sight of terrible traffic. We must have been on the road for seven hours.

Day 7:

C and I are in a dingy hotel room now and despite my slight elation, the feeling still returns as I hear the roar of thunder. She whispers to me, “Trapped. We’re still trapped.” [Su]
