From antiques, to botox injections, to mime lessons, one can find just about anything in this city called Jakarta. However, after the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) in mid December it has became apparent that there is still one thing still missing from the entertainment scene of this city, and that is a large enough, indoor/outdoor rave party venue. First of all, we would like to acknowledge the organizers and their effort to pull-off such a spectacular event that is the DWP, Indonesia’s biggest dance music festival. Top-notch DJs were brought in by the truckload, powered by an enormous sound system, mind-blowing stage, and not to mention a few billion Rupiah’s worth of fireworks entertaining the said 30,000 plus party-goers coming in from all parts of Indonesia and this big city. The problem for many punters, the horror stories of getting in, then getting out, eclipsed all of the great things that happened during that eventful, rainy night. To understand the scale of macet incurred by DWP, imagine that the north part of the Jakarta inner ring road toll road came to a standstill, and the car queue getting into Ancol from Jalan Gunung Sahari sprawled five kilometers long. It took one party goer four hours to get in, and another two-hours getting out, which makes for a pretty tiring night. A simple google search will find that in late 2011 Ancol had a maximum capacity of nine thousand parking lots, and only for the special occasion that is the 2012-2013 NYE Ancol claimed to have prepared 15,000 parking lots - which still resulted in utter chaos. Say from 30,000 ticket holders half of them carpooled, which means there were approx 15,000 cars coming in and out of Ancol at the same time through just three gates. This was one massive macet in the making and no-one was prepared. Everyone always gets excited about the biggest this, and the biggest that, but in the end after being to a few rave party events at EcoPark and Senayan over the past few years, I would have to say less is more in this regard. The first two DWPs were held in Senayan, where more access routes, public transport, and hotels were available within the vicinity which helps to ease traffic congestion. Sure there weren’t half the people there at the time but there’s plenty of room to move in more tents. Wherever it happens in the future we will be there cheering along with the rest of them but it would nice to have it a little more comfortable.

All live in the same city, and within 24 hours, they will be connected. Lotus is a rare cinematic experience that challenges audiences to question their own loneliness and that of others. ou probably stopped beating yourself up a long time ago over the 2013 New Year resolutions that you’d quietly dropped, mainly due to a lack of perserverance. You’ve now got another chance to prove yourself but 2014 is a big year for Indonesia, especially Jakarta, so many of your lifestyle resolutions this year may be made on your behalf anyway.
it wastes time and fuel as well. Why not do what the locals do and hang out somewhere till the traffic subsides? Over the last few years, the trendy thing is to sit outside a minimart (usually 7-Eleven or Circle K), taking advantage of the free wifi internet connection and shooting the breeze with friends. The shops also seem to sell everything apart from furniture and shoes but that day could still come.
Let’s a take a look at some possible resolutions I will try and give up smoking: It seems that the govenment has been shamed so and how this process might work. much in recent international meetings I will use my car less: With traffic congestion that it may at last sign up this year to the at its current levels, it’s a matter of opinion World Health Organization’s Framework whether it’s a blessing or a curse to have a Convention on Tobacco Control. “The Party is Over: How Your (convenient) Life Will Change in 2014”
W
hile modern metropolises in Europe wobble (economically), and The US is still not getting its (again, economical) act straight, for the past few years Indonesia and a few other developing countries have shown spectacular economic growth, with the phrase “rising middle class” easily being the phrase of the year. Yes, life has been good in the city; just take a look at previous The Beat Jakarta editions, literally every week you’ll see a new restaurant or club open, and immediately gets filled up. However, don’t kill the messenger; this could all change in 2014. The simple life that we know may soon change due to these four following issues:
Indonesia will see a new president this year, but the problem is, although a handful of senior politicians desperately want it, still in the eye of the public the nation’s top job still has no potential taker right now, aside from Jokowi that is. Due to this free-for-all political climate, it has made some people worry how things shall unfold. The good news is that ask any political or economical expert and they’ll say that we won’t expect to see any sort of mass anarchy or riots, as the people today are well informed and can see through the BS. What’s obviously going to be annoying will be the campaign rallies that take up the already all too clogged streets of the city. But our advice is that don’t lose faith in the system and participate in casting your vote! As we speak, the government is rolling out a program to install Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) on all private cars in an attempt to limit the use of subsidised fuel, some say to just three liters per day in 2014, some say to a point where fuel subsidy will only be for public transport only. To clarify, Pertamina spokesman Ali Mundakir mentioned that there is no time limit to the installation process, and the government hasn’t set a date to limit subsidised fuel. As much as we love it, the fuel subsidy has to go, as it is costing the government a deficit in the trade balance, and its not even contributing productive spending such as infrastructure development or education, but rather, private cars for people able to afford non-subsidised fuel.

Back in the day, talking about the weather was perhaps the most boring-yet-effective ice breaker. Nowadays, it’s about Jakarta’s traffic. Bad news, it’s only going to get worse thanks to the low cost green cars. If you’re confused about this issue, even the government is confused with one minister saying one thing, and the president saying the total opposite. We can only hope Jokowi’s program to bring in more Transjakarta buses works. So far the effort to sterilize the busway lane from public vehicles seems to be working. Aside from more buses, the Transjakarta network needs more coverage area to make it happen - and we’re not even going to mention how the existing buses and Transjakarta stations ought to be patched up. For this, we can only advise our readers to carpool when going out.
Soekarno-Hatta Airport over capacity Going to Jakarta by airplane, you’ll experience macet way before you hit the streets of the city. This writer was on a plane four times last month, and each flight was delayed, be it inbound or outbound - this was on Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. The problem is that the airport is running at over capacity and there are just too many flights for the tarmac to handle. So basically its a macet on the tarmac. The good news is that this year some flights will be diverted to the Halim Perdanakusuma airport downtown, hopefully a substantial amount of flights to help alleviate congestion in Soekarno-Hatta. www.beatmag.com

appy New Year 2014 everyone! Let us start this year with great classical music performances to set the mood. Tradition is the key here and like in the previous years; January is the month for us to once again witness some great New Year’s concerts in town. Like in most big cities in the world, we too have the tradition of going to New Year’s concerts. In Jakarta, Maestro Ananda Sukarlan pioneers this tradition throughout his Jakarta New Year’s Concert (JNYC) brand for over five years now. Organized under his foundation of Yayasan Musik Sastra, this New Year’s Concert happens on the first week of January. This year, Soehanna Hall has been chosen as the venue on January 5. A theme “Juvenum” is about youth. This time, aside from playing the piano, Suakarlan is also going to lead Nusantara Symphony Orchestra and

A year on from Toy’s self-titled debut (the success of which had much to do with the patronage of Dalston ‘it’ band The Horrors), and we find the east London quintet still thrumming along the autobahn in fifth gear, only occasionally stopping off for the odd melodic detour. First impressions suggest that Join The Dots is indeed a sure footed progression, if only marginally so - Tom Dougal’s vocals remain an elusive whisper over the top of chugging Krautrock basslines and shiny synths, while euphoric guitar breaks pop up when you least expect them before whooshing off into the distance. It’s a tricky album to pin down – mainly due to the tension between what they are good at (jangly melodies and sunbeam synths; “You Won’t Be The Same”, “To a Death Unknown”), and what they think they are good at (droning psych marathons that often plod on for almost 10 minutes; “Conductor”, “Fall Out of Love”).The latter is stylistically more in line with the Toy’s modus operanti of sprawling guitar effect experimentation, but it’s the former 80’s paisley underground style that lifts the album up from being too top-heavy with directionless dirges. If you only have time for one then let it be the title track - a distilled version of the entire album that flits back and forth between pounding drums, melodic verses and cerebral guitar reverb overdrive. Taken as a whole the effect is pleasantly dizzying, much like being in a room full of smoke and lasers, which, incidentally is exactly where much of Join The Dots was recorded. Sometimes the fog is a little too overwhelming, but just before it all gets too much, tracks like “Endlessly” provide a route through to the other side. It’s all very much an acquired taste, granted, and if the debut didn’t do much for you then neither will this, but if you like your psych then it doesn’t get much more out there than these guys. Dan Ashcroft is in a fog.

First, Reeves, after mastering Tai Chi in his last movie, picks up samurai sword lightsabre thingy to fight in mythical Japan. Next, we have Ben Stiller as Walter Mitty. 47 Ronin Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Carl Rinsch. Writer: Walter Hamada (screen story), Chris Morgan (screenplay and screen story), Hossein Amini (screenplay). Cast: Keanu Reeves, Rinko Kikuchi, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kou Shibasaki, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.
Adapted from one of Japan’s most enduring tales, 47 Ronin revolves around 47 masterless samurai who vow to avenge their slain master and regain the honor and control of their land which was taken by a devious leader, Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano). Reeves plays an outcast half-breed warrior who joins the band of samurais and together they embark upon a journey filled with freaks, monsters, and other supernatural perils. The previews for this look absolutely awesome and the concept design is out of this world, but lets see if the director can pull it together to make a cohesive film.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy. Director: Ben Stiller. Writer: Steve Conrad (screenplay and screen story), James Thurber (short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”). Cast: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, Sean Penn.
Based on James Thurber’s short story of the same name written some 70 years ago, here, Ben Stiller dons two hats, one as the director and the other one as the titular star. As a photo archivist at the nearly defunct Life magazine, confined to his cubicle and desk, quiet and withdrawn Mitty spends nearly all day daydreaming about his adventurous fantasies and his love interest Cheryl (Kristen Wiig). Tired of merely daydreaming all day, Mitty sets on a real adventure around the globe in pursuit of an elusive photographer. The trailer for this movie alone was probably one of the best we’ve seen this year, if it does the movie justice, this will be one you’ll want to see in the cinema.
Out of the Furnace Crime, Drama, Thriller. Director: Scott Cooper. Writer: Brad Ingelsby, Scott Cooper. Cast: Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard.
Russell (Christian Bale) and Rodney (Casey Affleck) are two downtrodden brothers living in a northeastern suburb. The former, being the breadwinner, works as a blue-collar worker at a local mill while caring for his terminally ill father. Rodney, on the other hand, just finished his time serving in Iraq and now he’s involved with one of the cruelest crime rings in the area. To save his brother, after their father dies, Russell takes the matter into his own hands, feeling that he is already a pretty crappy blue collar life and nothing else left to lose. This ensemble combined with critically-acclaimed director Scott Cooper might just be that dramatic thriller we’ve been waiting for this year.

STYLE New Mall with Breathtaking View Baywalk is the latest shopping destination located in Greenbay Pluit, North Jakarta. What distinguishes this mall with the preexisting malls? This one is designed in the form of a yacht. There, visitors can shop, stroll leisurely and gather with family or friends with the sensation of an ocean view. “This concept of a shopping mall overlooking the sea is something new,” said Ellen Hidayat, chief executive officer of Baywalk Mall. The idea is to offer shoppers the concept of returning to nature. The Baywalk Mall interior is designed with three themes into one, namely sun, sand, and sea. With natural colors that blend with the environment, the mall is a shopping center with a comfortable and attractive interior. Besides the concept of returning to nature, Baywalk Mall interior design also features LEDs in a round shape with a diameter of six meters which is the centerpiece, where various activities or programs can be shown. There are over 100 tenants including Ace Hardware, Cinema XXI, Informa, Toys Kingdom, Electronic Solutions and Home Solutions, Timezone, Fun World, Farmers Market, Scholastic, Gold’s Gym and Bandar Djakarta. Urban style goes bohemian this spring with a collection full of playful and personal styles. Snug patchwork jackets of leather and suede modernise the look, and graphic-printed waist jackets give a more sculptured silhouette. Frilly blouses add softness, and a long-sleeve top in matt metallics toughens the look. Printed suede leggings bring texture, while skinny jeans have the slightest kick at the ankle. Delicate cotton voile dresses have vintage romance and graphic-print dresses are covered in fortune teller symbols for a sense of city mysticism. This bohemian feeling continues in to the woman’s accessory wardrobe where big pieces of jewelry and belts with mystical elements integrate perfectly with the clothes. Thigh-high stretch suede boots show that flats have attitude and to finish the look fake fur waistcoats are the season’s essential. Here we are again, heralding the start of a new year. This is my favorite time of the year, but it could be made even more perfect if I were in wintery weather. It’s time to dress up a little nicer than usual: a little more newer than usual, with all the glimmering fabrics and accessories. But while you’re at it, don’t forget to don lovely red pouts too.
It’s bright and has that luscious cherry coolness, and doesn’t have a prolific scent or taste as far as I can tell. It’s not the most pigmented lipstick for application in a single swipe — but boy, when worn fullon, it’s very vivid.
Say hello to the Addiction Lipstick in Monroe Walk. Addiction Lipstick has one of the simplest packagings among my collection. It’s a plain black rectangular plastic tube with the brand’s name imprinted on one of the surfaces and inside the tube. Unfortunately, the surface does tend to attract dust and oils, so it may need a good wipe-down every now and then. The classic snap closure allows you to put the cap on in any direction, and it doesn’t have to be aligned with the Addiction imprint for it to close properly.
It has a creamy texture, but not to the point where it’s slippery or too buttery. There’s a weightless, clear feel to it. And yes, you can build it up to full pigmentation or wear it as a stain. It’s very easy to control for whatever your desired result. The bullet shape is very unique too: rounded at the top, but the pointy end allows me to be precise in application. There’s just something — and I can’t quite pinpoint what it is — that I love about Monroe Walk. If I can say it’s a classic red, it is, but it’s more than that. That vividness is truly a head turner; it’s a holiday red.
Here’s another surprise: this actually has really good wear time. I was eating, drinking, and munching around for Monroe Walk, an aptly-named lipstick for hours, but the lipstick stayed put nicely. this particular shade, is a neutral-cool red. RED NAIL POLISH In
SHOWDOWN
line with this month’s theme to celebrate all things red, we’ve gone ahead and arranged a battle between similar-looking shades of red. This way, we can compare between each brand’s color, price, and — most importantly — staying power. So we applied the scientific method to determine which of three fire engine-red nail polishes lasted the longest. Here are the parameters of our experiment: Two coats. No base or top coat. Conduct our daily activities with no special regard for polish longevity. All right, so it isn’t as scientific as it can be, but it’s as close to a controlled experiment as we could have gotten. How did each nail polish fare? Check out the before and after pictures to find out.

“The application is easy, and two coats is enough to get the color payoff I wanted. It dries pretty quickly too, but the shade somewhat darkened after it completely dried. After three days of wear, it was only minimally botched where the nail grows out. But I think this could be worn for a week and still look all right.”

“I prefer wearing dark nail polishes, so this is one of the few times red nail polish found its way onto my claws. The formula thickened and the color darkened somewhat, but those changes didn’t really bother me. I also do a lot of tapping on the keyboard at work, but there was no significant chipping to be found.”
( Before & After )
“Like most OPI shades, this one required two coats before you get the desired color payoff; but like most OPI polishes, it did really well over the course of three days. It didn’t take too long to dry, and while the color did turn out a little darker by the third day, it thinned out too. The gloss also faded out a little to reveal more of a matte finish.”
( Before & After )
OPI in Big Apple Red (180k) Here’s what we learned by the end of this brief experiment: each shade darkened after three days of wear, we found very little evidence chipping, and our hands look chunkier in photos than they do in real life.

GIRLS OF ROCK: GET LORDE’S LUSCIOUS LOCK Britney Spears was 17 years old when she recorded the most important pop track of Generation Y’s formative years, the eradefining “Baby, One More Time”. Since Brit-Brit, other 17-year-olds have provided the soundtrack to the adolescence of generations following it, and it looks like Gen Z has yet another pop icon to help define its generation. This is Ella Yelich-O’Connor of New Zealand, who is known better by her stage name, Lorde. She’s been making rounds in pop music with minimalist pop art tracks. The words that have been thrown around plenty to describe her music include “dark” and “quirky,” and her voice has a haunting, mature quality that betrays her years. Her manner, public relations, and songwriting have earned her the title of the “anti-Miley,” in stark contrast to Miley Cyrus’ less than kosher behavior. before perming it. much as I like to collect blushers, I am very picky in nature. I don’t just go out there and buy blindly. I, as usual, make picks carefully and when I find something that I love, I will collect them. That being said, I’m not exactly adventurous when it comes to the shades either.
red lipstick requires practice. You have to understand the shape of your lips, alter it if you have to, then making sure you don’t go overboard. Applying a red nail polish could be a nightmare too; imagine blotched red fingers everywhere *sigh*.
However, my curiosity got the better of me. After all, I have a thing for blushers. I’ve So this time, I want to try a red blush, or compiled a few items on today’s wishlist, two. Josie Maran Cheek Gelée Getaway Red looks like something that I’d devour to quench my thirst. I mean, look at the name and the color! The gel consistency offers sheerer, watery-color pigmentation that’s just great for on-the-go.
Giorgio Armani Blushing Fabric in Sicilian Orange doesn’t look orange as one might think. It’s actually a cooler toned reddish pink. I swatched this a long time ago at the counter and still remember the dreamy velvety smooth-soft finish it leaves after it’s blended in on the skin. It’s simply beautiful and unique.
BECCA Beach Tint Papaya is described as a hot red shade. The cream stain could be used on the lips and cheeks. I always like the idea of cheek tints because I could layer powder blusher over it and get a different effect. Psst, supposedly, it’s also scented accordingly to the names.
Now, considering red is a pure pigment, it might not be as versatile as say, pink or peach blushers. But that’s exactly the challenge. For starters, I’m going to wear them and match the undertones with my red lipsticks. Paired with simple lined eyes and mascara, it’s going to look clean, crisp and modern. And of course, there’s always that one final option if I’m not ready to commit into purchasing these products; using my red lipsticks as a blusher too. It’s an easy, doable and it’s a good basic ground for practice.

Outback Steakhouse
C
ontrary to popular belief, Outback Steakhouse is not an Australian franchise. The Crocodile Dundee-inspired eatery actually started in Florida. Outback made its way to Indonesia in December 2001, opening the first outlet in Jakarta in Ratu Plaza Shopping Center. Other Outback restaurants in Jakarta are in Pondok Indah Mall 1 and Kuningan City Mall. When you step into an Outback Steakhouse, you’ll find a friendly, casual ambiance, adorned with contemporary décor which celebrates everything Australian. And they take pride in serving you the juiciest of steaks and the choicest seafood, prepared with the freshest of ingredients. The signature starter here is the Typhoon Bloom (69.9k); fresh hand-cut onion strings, dusted with secret seasonings, stacked high and fried perfectly to a crisp, and served with mayonnaise horse radish dipping sauce. The Kookaburra Wings (89.9k full portion, 59.9k half) are also popular; chicken wings tossed in a blend of spices, accompanied by blue cheese dressing and celery sticks.

To our pleasant surprise, we totally loved the Seared Ahi Tuna Chopped Salad (89.9k); a sashimi-style tuna rubbed in bold spices and seared to a rare temperature, served on a bed of iceberg lettuce, with creamy ginger-soy sauce and wasabi vinaigrette. To die for! Yes, everyone knows how splendid the Outback Special (219.9k) is; 8 oz. of USDA choice certified Angus beef, aged just right, then expertly seasoned with spices and seared over the grill sealing in its bold flavors. And how can you miss the hand-carved, meticulously aged, then slow-roasted Prime Rib (249.9k for 8 oz., 289.9k for 10 oz.)? The succulent and saucy Barbeque Beef Ribs (289.9k) may also be one of the best in town. But, a couple of new dishes caught our eyes; the Spinach Artichoke Dip (89.9k) is a superb shareable dish; a creamy blend of spinach, artichokes, Monterey Jack and Parmesan cheeses, baked until bubbly, and served with tortilla chips. And the Filet Oscar (329.9k) is a perfect surf-and-turf combo; a seasoned beef fillet topped with grilled shrimp asparagus and hollandaise sauce, served with your choice of two freshly made sides.
Chicken (119.9k); grilled chicken served with sautéed shrimp and button mushroom tossed in a tasty tomato cream sauce, or the Pepper Crusted Salmon (129.9k); salmon fillet seasoned with cracked pepper and spices and grilled over an open flame, topped with a zesty lemon butter sauce, are excellent alternatives for all the red meat. As for desserts, the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under (69.9k) is the ultimate here; freshly-baked pecan brownie crowned with vanilla ice cream, drizzled with warm chocolate sauce and finished with chocolate shavings and whipped cream. While the Cinnamon Oblivion (55.9k) is a close second; vanilla ice cream topped with fresh, warm cinnamon apples, cinnamon croutons, pecans, caramel sauce and whipped cream. Yummm… The favourite cocktail here is the Gold Coast ‘Rita (89.9k); frozen or on the rocks, it’s Outback’s signature margarita. The Caribbean Mojito (89.9k) is a twist of the traditional Mojito; a tasty blend of Bacardi Limon, fresh lime and mint, topped with Sprite. And if you feel like having a spiritfree drink, go for the refreshing Barrier Reef Punch (32.9k)! Draft Beer is of course available, too (47.9k for 12 oz., 87.9k for Big Bloke 22 oz. size).

Jawbone’s first foray into wearable technology with the UP device launched way back in 2011, and today the premium electronic company premieres the brand new UP24 with enhanced features and functionality. The incredibly lightweight and water-resistant fitness tracking bracelet is capable of counting steps, logging sleep patterns and tallying calorie intake with hopes of helping its wearer lead a healthier life. Head over to Jawbone’s official site to learn more about the UP24 and/or purchase your own for $149.99.
The BioLite Camping Stove could easily be mistaken for a power station! It uses wood and other biomass fuels, so there’s no need to lug heavy gas canisters around with you. As the combustion process produces energy, some of this heat is converted into electricity so you can charge small devices like phones and digital cameras. If this wasn’t enough, the generating unit also features a fan and its own battery supply. The purpose of the internal battery is to power the fan whilst the fire is getting going. As the fire builds, so does the heat, to a point where the stove re-charges its own battery and moves the fan onto a higher-output setting. The fan improves its efficiency, making it burn hotter and cleaner. It’s perfect for camping holidays and festivals. You can cook your food and charge your devices safe in the knowledge that your environmental impact is kept to an absolute minimum £134.95
