First, let us pray for the Japanese caught up in this latest disaster. Rain and heat of the wet to dry transition is still affecting Jakarta now. So, there aren’t many events being held outdoors. Speaking of imports, or the impending lack of Japanese imports, the import question is still alive in the film industry here in Jakarta, whether foreign films will be allowed to enter the country or not. However, the performing artists imports are still flooding Jakarta and the public still will be spoiled by entertainers such as Justin Bieber, quality band Maroon 5, and debutant singer Bruno Mars. Music legends? There are still many who will perform in Jakarta soon. Relax and continue to follow the information right here at TBJ. # PrayForJapan. #PrayForJapan.

The new MarlboroVibes parties kicked off at Immigrant at the end of February, and will continue to rock around the nation until the end of the year. Be sure not to miss a Marlboro Vibes event when it passes through your town.

The representatives of the joint venture between Asia Sport Development, Berlian Entertainment in conjunction with Marygops Studio, Multivision Plus and Mahkota were all present to announce Justin Bieber’s concert is definitely happening on the 23rd of April at Sentul International Convention Center. The news was strengthened by the presence of Justin Bieber’s management at the press conference. So parents, you still have reason to worry about your tween…

The Animals Concertos
By Erza S.T. Going into the end of the first quarter of 2011, Jakarta has started showing signs of life again. More and more concerts are happening in Jakarta from pop, rock and classical. In this edition we are going to talk about two upcoming classical concerts that will not only be beautiful to hear and see, but also a load of fun. I say fun because you can actually bring your children to enjoy the show.

Not all classical pieces are serious and difficult to understand. Several great composers such as Prokovief and Britten have proven to the world that fun, happy and cheerful classical compositions with interesting story lines can be made, catering for younger audiences as well as classical aficionados. One of these great composers is Camille SaintSaens who created the most beloved musical suite “Le Carnaval des Animaux” (The Carnival of the Animals) in 1886. In this famous musical suite, Saint-Saens tells us a story of the animals through music and sound in all 14 movements. The march of the lions, waltzing elephants and even the mysterious aquatic life of an aquarium are all portrayed in beautifully illustrative melodies that will capture your attention. Some of the movements like the swan and the aquarium have found their own stardom, having been adopted as part of the soundtrack to many movies. Understanding the importance of educating young generations on classical music has inspired Konservatorium Musik Jakarta to host this performance on this upcoming March 25th at GoetheHaus Institute. To make it more interesting, the conservatory will present the Orchestra of the Youth under Iswargia R. Sudarno as conductor. It is a good exercise for your children to see that they can also be great musicians, even though they are young. Our renowned pianist Adelaide Simbolon
will also participate on this musical suite as the story narrator. As for those adults who perhaps prefer something that is more serious and complex to hear, then Bach could be the perfect choice. Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra under Dr. Billy Kristanto as conductor is teaming up with Jakarta Oratorio Society and the renowned Reformed Oratorio Society from Singapore to present you with all Bach compositions at their monthly concert in Aula Simfonia Jakarta this upcoming March 27th. The ‘Simply Bach’ concert plans to highlight Bach’s famous works from concertos such as ‘Concerto for two pianos in C-Minor’, ‘BMV 1060’ and ‘Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D-Major’ to powerful oratorios such as ‘Cantata No. 105’ and the extravagant ‘St. John’s Passion’. The program might intimidate some new classical lovers, however you never know, and you might end up liking it! To have a live concert performance with such a strong music program like this could give you a more memorable experience compared to just listening to it on CD. I will always remember listening to the Brandenburg concerto live in Vienna. It was so moving and full of bravado. So there you go Jakartans... two interesting concerts that surely are not to be missed!

Are They Ready for This?
Hu’u Bar’s night out with the Golddigging crew - Jakarta for the Nyepi Weekend
“This is gonna be big. I don’t think they realise what’s coming,” says Chef PM as we meet in my office in Petitenget, Bali a week before heading to Jakarta and Dragonfly for a party that Hu’u Bar’s chef Phil Mimbimi had organized for the Saturday of Nyepi. Flash forward to the Friday night before the party and we’re lining up drinks at the Aston Rasuna downstairs bar – that’s where we’re staying – waiting for other members of the group to arrive. When pressed about the following night, the Chef PM states it again, “This is gonna be big. I don’t think Dragonfly even has an inkling as to what’s gonna happen there tomorrow,” flinging his hands and arms around, eyes rolling back in his head as he does. That Friday night we were cruising with the

Hu’u team. We left Aston Rasuna with the Chef, Johnny from the bar, Jana on the door, Dimas on the floor, Bagoes on the mic, me and my VPA - on the observation deck, and we were on the way to pick up Sean, the man responsible for the lot and taking care of us all for the evening. We ended up hitting the town in an extra large Alpha type Toyota with everyone jammed in going to Lara Djonggrang in Menteng for dinner, Ritz Carlton’s 8 Lounge and Immigrant for drinks, and wound up in Senayan City’s Domain. It was a fun night for the crew to find a certain managerial bonding before the big gig. We ended up drinking way too much under the circumstances, being the night before the show, and just about rolled out of Domain by 3.30am. The Hu’u crew were up at 8am to do breakfast at the Ritz Carlton in Mega Kuningan – not sure how they did that. After dining at a new restaurant in Sudirman, Luna Negra (ordinary service, but I must say it does serve decent food and has an elegant decor), we made it to the front door of Dragonfly. It was early and still quiet, you could say we were right on time. The Hu’u crew was already inside and still standing – with the stamina of a bull the crew was continuing to push the limits. Punters were spilling in as food was being passed around and drinks were supposedly being mixed and handed out – I can’t attest to this fact as I didn’t see any drinks come my way. A bottle was ordered and our little group – or sponsor’s post – began to take shape. The girls arrived – Nanie and the team – always so dependable when along for a good party and didn’t disappoint. The time had arrived for the main event. Sms messages were flying and we were told to get near the front. We just got there as the Rocky music began to play, and the trumpets blew the triumphant arrival of king hitting DJ, Gold Digger. At this point, it appeared the Hu’u chef was right.
It was a show stopper. Dragonfly and its crowd were given a special treat from their Bali cousins – it was bigger than Ben Hur and even sounded reminiscent. It was bigger than any other Saturday night, and really was amazing because something new was happening right in front of DF eyes. The poker-faced crowd had a collective smile on their face. Gold Digger was getting a lot of support around the decks from the team, waving at the crowd and pulling people into the swing, working this foreign and benign crowd into a frenzy. The stylish Jakartan crowd was ready to let their hair down and gave up to the mastery of Golddigger without a fight. There was basically too many people inside to move, one of the biggest nights DF had had in a long time - and definitely fun to be part of. Gold Digger’s playlist of old and new tracks, backed up by the original videos took most people by surprise and on a visual and sonic nostalgia trip mixed with, dare I say it, simple fun. The DF crowd were by his side and they got their collective Gold Digger rocks off! [D. Trauts]

BONGKY MARCEL M usician
What music are you into at the moment? So many albums, so many bands. Mostly from rock, folk, and reggae genres. What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? Styx album by Styx, back in the 80s. Chosen by my brother. At first I was angry because the guitar sound, strange kind of distortion, it's annoying. Strangely, after a while I started to like it. Till this very day. What are your all-time favourite albums? Why? I like most albums by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. They speak their mind warmly and smoothly, honest, bold and true. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Several Indonesian albums. I didn't get any inspiration out of them. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? I wanna be Jim Morrison because I'm the Lizard King hahaha‌ What song do you choose to start your weekend? "Get Up" by Van Halen And album you choose to end your weekend? Jack Johnson's Brushfire Fairytales
Other than still constantly touring with BIP, Bongky these days has also been busy as musical director for tv commercials and public service advertising. With his other project, Warteg Boyz, he is slowly writing more new material and planning to implement a new strategy for the next album.

Hypnosis? Anyone Can M
aybe you are a fan of Romy Rafael, the well known Indonesian hypnotist? With his extraordinary way of handling audiences during his performances, it’s hard not to admire his abilities. Well, I can tell you three things. It’s not a gift, it’s definitely not magic, and anyone can learn hypnosis from scratch! According to Wikipedia, hypnosis is a mental state or imaginative role-enactment, usually induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction, which is commonly composed of a long series of preliminary instructions and suggestions. That’s a lot to take in. Well, in short, hypnosis is a way to relax your body and your conscious mind, so that you can gain access to your subconscious. You go into a nice, relaxed state known as a trance state. Hypnosis has several uses, the two most popular are hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis. The former, hypnotherapy, is hypnotism for therapeutic purposes, such as to stop smoking, to increase an athletes performance, to give birth, to lose weight and other certain physical conditions. On the other hand, stage hypnosis is only for the entertainment biz in front of an audience - much like Romy Rafael’s show.
beatmag.com 042
You can learn and pursue both or other areas of hypnotism right here in Jakarta. There are communities, schools, institutes, also seminars out there supporting the subject. One hypnosis school with reliable sources is Yan Nurindra School of Hypnotism. Yan Nurindra is the pioneer in the world of hypnosis in Indonesia. While hypnosis was still a grey area in this country back in 2003, Yan Nurindra held open-to-public hypnosis training courses, while other groups were only for a limited circle of people. A few of the programs available are self hypnosis, fundamental (for beginners), advanced hypnotherapy and professional stage hypnotism for the entertainment business, which are all exclusively handled by the man himself; Yan Nurindra. Take note though, considering the number of issues regarding crimes using this science, hopefully people will use hypnosis for a good cause, and a good cause only. Remember, with great power, comes great responsibility! For further information, just type in www. hipnotisme.net in your browser!

Getting Nostalgic with Old Trends
Let’s drop everything that is happening now, and take a moment to walk down memory lane with some of Jakarta’s trends from a few decades ago.
The Grunge Scene
Although Jakarta is thousands of kilometers away from Seattle (the heart of the grunge music scene), the trend did have a significant impact on the young people of Jakarta. The music and style sense of groups like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and other 90s grunge bands are seen all over the city. Boys and girls back then were rockin’ the grunge tunes, and at the same time donning plaid flannels, cool ripped jeans, and dyed hair just to be acknowledged by their peers.
The Original Dr. Martens Shoes
I know this trend at heart, because I used to have a pair of Doc Marts back when I was at high school due to the frenzy. With the rigid yet timeless style, lots of color and height choices, it captured the heart of many teenagers in Jakarta back then. Despite the notso-cheap price, it seems that parents don’t mind scraping a little from their pockets to satisfy their teenager’s fashion sense.

Feature Café Tenda (Tented Café)
Café Tenda (means ‘tent’ in Bahasa)—an eatery sheltered with awnings or big umbrellas that serves mostly western food and varieties of beverages, was the bomb a few decades back. Young people feel the need to open everybody’s favorite hangout spots to keep up with the trend, make friends and also money along the way. Whether it’s on the street pavements of Jakarta, or at parking spots at malls, a café tenda was the place to be on Saturday nights back then.
Jelly Shoes
The first time that Jelly shoes—shoes made of PVC plastic, became a hit was actually in the 1980s, but it was in the late 1990s that it became a trend in Jakarta. And whaddya know, a few years ago, varieties of Jellies came back to life. So, is it worth it to feel a little like Cinderella in these transparent shoes if it gives blisters on your feet, girls? Ouch!
Tamagotchi
Japan is often the pioneer in cute digital games such as the Tamagotchi, which also fascinated kids in Jakarta. The Japanese monster toy company, Bandai, made the first of this toy in 1996. The first released device has a pretty simple model, egg-sized with a few small buttons and a rather small screen. Kids back in the day, carry Tamagotchis inside their pockets everywhere they go, and just played mommy.
I’m sure there are still lots of things bursting out of your memory after reading this. So, gather up your old friends, and have fun remembering those teen days.

A Jakarta Rabbit People have been talking a lot about the newly opened JackRabbit restaurant. TBJ’s David Trauts went to find out for himself.
Jack Rabbit restaurant in Kuningan opened in December 2010. The stylish rear, ground floor section of the new Cyber 2 Tower is the culinary home to celebrated chef, Juna Rorimpandey who recently came back to Jakarta after 12 years in the US working for some of best chefs and restaurants in that country. And his partner behind the bar, which is a very impressive wooden bar taking up the right hand side of the first dining space, is Mixologist Carson Quinn. People have been complaining about the level of service at Jack Rabbit since opening. This, of course, is the usual complaint of every new restaurant in Jakarta and is like a well worn record stuck in a certain groove repeating itself all over town. During my visit recently, and the one and only time there, I was pleasantly surprised with the service. The young man tending us moved in and out with a minimum of fuss, taking orders, serving drinks and dishes as should be.

The interior was touching on sub-Antarctic temperatures so we decided to sit out on the patio. We were happy to find the patio wasn’t so warm at this hour of the evening and even with the busy traffic noise coming from Casablanca it was still rather pleasant. We ordered a Japanese Garden Salad [55k], which was tasty and displayed Juna’s time in Japanese restaurants of the US. Duck Tortellini [68k] was also a tasty entrée with the homemade pasta satchels filled with very light shreds of duck and a dripping in sauce. The mains, Braised Short Ribs [175k] and the Pan Seared Duck [130k] came out and perhaps displayed Juna’s time in French/ American restaurant French Laundry. They are great dishes, a little large on the vegetable side more than supplying substance in the meat department, but remain tasty and appetizing. The sauces are not heavy and supply just enough extra taste to kick the plate along. Value for money at Jack Rabbit is more or less on target. What you get is a substantial meal without totally breaking the bank. For example, the Rp79k wine on the list, the Pengwine Carmenere, is very drinkable and for the price a real winner. There are other more highly priced wines on the list that can be chosen too. The menu is easily navigated and quite simple. It doesn’t confuse the guest or promise too much. I think it represents what Juna and Carson are offering generally in Jack Rabbit – a good, unpretentious dining experience, but a little more interesting fare than your run-ofthe-mill bistro style Jakarta restaurant. Now, is the service all that bad? No, not for us, it was downright good. So if you want to try to prove me wrong, you’ll have to get down there and find out for yourself. Food Don’t worry, it’s just their tagline. Carls Jr. is quite well-known for their memorable ads and commercials. Back in late 90s and early 2000s, their “If it doesn’t get all over the place, it doesn’t belong in your face” campaign was all over TV and print media in the US. It basically said that the burgers are so good, you don’t mind a bit of ketchup and juice dripping onto your clothes and other areas... And their burgers are really, really good.
The décor simply screams California fun, with scenes of Los Angeles and San Francisco on the walls to add to the Americana factor.
Established in Southern California over 65 years ago, Carl’s Jr. opened its doors to the public in Jakarta on August 2, 2010. They chose Grand Indonesia Mall as the site for their first store.Their second outlet at Emporium Mall Pluit was opened in February this year. Some new stores are already in the works to open this year, such as at Central Park Mall and at La Piazza Kelapa Gading.
Speaking of the fries, the natural-cut, some-skinintact fries are a great companion for your burger, or by themselves. We love it! You shouldn’t stop there though, as the Charbroiled Chicken Salad (27k) and the Hand Scooped Ice Cream Shakes (35k) are also worth a try.
But now let’s talk about the food. Hamburgers are their thing and they are serious about it. Their main burger is the Famous Star with cheese (36k). But for us, the best thing on the menu is the Portobello Mushroom Burger (50k). It is quite a work of art. The blend of premium beef patty, Portobello mushrooms, Swiss cheese, onions, Also, in the US, sexy celebs such as Paris Hilton tomato and lettuce is just to die for! All that rockin’ left us with quite an appetite, but the mall’s restaurants were too packed with diners, and so was the food court beside it. We asked around and got some information that there was a new sushi place right next to the mall. Well, that sounded good to us.
We heard a lot of noise and laughter from upstairs, and it turned out that this restaurant has a little ‘game zone’. The PlayStation3 proved to be a crowd pleaser here, especially among the young (and the young-at-heart). There were some funny scenes that night with little kids beating their parents on Guitar Hero and Band Hero games. We found Sushi Rock N Roll tucked away in a Rock N Roll, indeed! shophouse just behind the food court. This is a simple yet cozy eatery specializing in Japanese Back to the food. Up next, came the Jumbo food. The interior doesn’t really say rock n roll, but Dragon Roll sushi (57k), a beautiful blend of ebi when we asked, we were told by the staff that the tempura, unagi (eel), tobiko (roe) and avocado. ‘rock n roll’ is more about the upbeat spirit and We also went for the Crunchy Salmon Spicy Mayo the young-at-heart approach to the customers. Roll sushi (45k) and the Chicken Teriyaki Don or More importantly, it is saying “affordability”, which rice bowl (25k). This latter one is a quite good is something we like! We started with some Miso deal to have, as it comes with a side salad and a Soup (9k) and Chuka Kurage (22k). The former bowl of miso soup. Not bad at all, eh? comes with a tasty surprise. Pieces of salmon add a certain something to the hearty soup. While Some Ocha or green tea (8k) helped us digest all the latter, a delectable cold appetizer, is made that Japanese goodness, and we just couldn’t help from jellyfish. We also ordered some Edamame trying out the video games upstairs. A fun battle and soybeans, (8k) a couple of plates of the fresh with fellow patrons rounded off our rockin’ night. Best of Times Drama, Romance. Director: Yongyoot Thongkongtoon. Writers: Nontra Kumwong, Aummaraporn Phandintong. Cast: Arak Amornsupasiri, Yarinda Bunnag, Sansanee Wattanakul. “Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in the memory as the wish to forget it.” - Michel de Montaigne, 16th century French writer. That deep notion is what describes the idea of two love stories told in this thoughtfulyet-lighthearted Thai film. Keng is a snobbish and awkward vet who is sentenced to do social work for drunk driving. He gets assigned to teach senior citizens on a computer course. In the class, love blossoms discreetly between a farmer Jamrat and widow Sampit. Soon, Keng also has his long time first love reawakened when his best friend’s ex-wife, Fai re-enters his life. With a languid and relaxed flow to the realizations that the characters make along the way, Best of Times is filled with moments that make each character more endearing. The movie also keeps it real as much as possible and shies away from rom-com predictability right from the start.
Drive Angry (3D) Action, Thriller. Director: Patrick Lussier. Writer: Todd Farmer. Cast: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fitchner, Billy Burke, David Morse, Christa Campbell.

A high-speed car chase, bone-chilling slasher violence and blasting gun shots and explosions along with a little bit of supernatural creepiness. Sounds like too much fun blended into one film? Well that could have been the case when the idea was presented by director Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine) to the producers. Put Nicholas Cage (National Treasure) with sexy newcomer young actress Amber Heard (Zombieland), and you’ll definitely get the male audiences to sit and enjoy the popcorn buckets. The story is about a vengeful father who escapes from hell and chases after vicious cult men who killed his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter to be sacrificed. Seat belt on fellas!
Gnomeo and Juliet (3D) Animation, Romance. Writer and Director: Kelly Asbury. Cast (Voices): James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Ashley Jensen, Jason Statham, Matt Lucas, Ozzy Osbourne, Jim Cummings.
“What’s in a name?”, the famous quote by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet turns into “What’s in a gnome?” for this lovely animated movie. The story is pretty much adapted and made accordingly to the original classic piece, but in a more off-the-wall and comical way with gnomes as the characters. Gnomeo from Montague’s blue garden and Juliet from Capulet’s red garden fall in love with each other. However, they have as many obstacles to overcome when they are caught up in a feud between neighbours. The story unfolds as they try to avoid tragedy and find a happy-ending to their garden-crossed love affair. Be amused and serenaded as the legendary Elton John himself takes care of all the music and songs, both classic and new original ones here. Red and blue are the new romantic colours!

ome guys have that deep, penetrating stare that make us forget our names, but it’s hard to be mesmerized by such a gaze if the eyes are lined with dark circles that show tiredness and lack of energy, right? New Fashion Reality Show: Launch My Line Affi, editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude
If
you simply can’t get enough of fashion reality shows, then you might be happy to know that another one was launched just this month! It’s called ‘Launch My Line’ and it features 10 established fashion designers paired with 10 industry professionals, who are highly regarded in their own field of expertise, but have always dreamed of having their own clothing line. From stylists, music producers, event planners to CEOs and choreographers, the innovators will work with the established designers to bring their vision to life and create a fashion line. In the end, one team will be declared the winner and someone’s clothing line will be launched. Twin brothers Dean and Dan Caten, the duo behind DSquared2, will host the show while fashion notables Stefani Greenfield (founder and creative director of hip specialty boutique SCOOP) and Lisa Kline (celebrity designer who owns a clothing line in her name) will be the judges. If you’re wondering if it’s anything like Project Runway, it’s similar but there are still significant differences. For example, while all the participants of Project Runway are designers, the ones in Launch My Line aren’t. They come from various backgrounds, such as music, business, architecture etc, and while all of them share a common vision to launch their own clothing line, most of them can’t design clothes. One of the contestants even said in the first episode “I can’t even sew on a button!” And I think it’s going to be very interesting to see how they will face the fashion-related tasks given to them each week. I was lucky enough to be given the chance to chat with Dan Caten on the phone last week and asked him a few questions about this new show. Here is a snippet of our conversation!
beatmag.com 066
Style What’s the story about your involvement in Launch My Line? We were asked to be judges of the show and we were asked to do a video reel for judging. And when the producers saw the video, they thought we were really funny and so we were asked to host and judge. What do you think is the most important factor in deciding who will become a winner of the show? Is it vision, creativity or business skills? I think it has to be a bit of everything. The key thing of what we try to do is to try and have continuity and create a brand and line. We try to ask them to make each garment that has something to do with the next garment and the next garment and so on. So when you look at a rack you’ll see a whole collection. So the key thing is having a line that they’re going to launch. And I think the winner of the show does that perfectly in coming up with a 10-piece collection. What was the most fun part about doing the show? I think the most fun was giving critique in the show, but that was also the hard part, when you had to send them (the contestants) home. You know, you started to get to know them really well after a month of shooting. But that’s the nature of the show. Somebody’s gotta lose and somebody’s gotta win.
trying to be consistent, trying to build a brand, trying to have a signature, trying to build an awareness, trying to have individuality. There are some clothes in the show that are really ugly but they are consistent, and that designer has a vision. I don’t like his vision, but he is consistent. Whereas other designers might create one thing one week, something else the next week and that’s the first one that’s gonna go. So maybe in other fashion reality shows like Project Runway, if a contestant makes a pretty dress, they get by. On this show, that’s not the case. If I was a young designer and I watched the show, I would learn a lot. And I think that’s the best thing about the show... Interesting, right? I got to watch about 15 minutes of the first episode of Launch My Line and already I was breathless looking at all the contestants frantically grabbing fabrics at the store for the outfits they haven’t even designed yet! I want to watch more so I’m definitely going to tune in to Sony Entertainment Television every Tuesday at 8 PM.
So any episodes that you think we should not miss? When we have a special guest! We have pretty good special guests coming on to the show so you do not want to miss that. But actually there are two or three episodes that I really like as well, like when we had to go to a gallery and the one where there was a conflict between the 2 designers. Those are my favourites! What do you say about people who criticize the show and say that Launch My Line is no different from Project Runway? It’s not my show, I’m just hosting the show but I have to say Launch My Line is different than any other reality shows out there because somebody who can make a pretty dress doesn’t mean they’re gonna be a designer, and if it’s not the designer who will win the show, it is for people outside watching the show, so they can say “I wanna be a designer, I need to know this and this.” So what we’re trying to teach people on this show is what it really takes, to have their own personal style,

ddressing the confusion of the post-industrial era, Lindu Prasekti is more concerned with transforming the junk he already has into magical objects than shaping trash mountains.
In the exhibition ‘Art w/o Limits’, Level One, Grand Indonesia, March 11 – 18, 2011, Lindu showed what his “folk constructivist” title really meant. He creates sculptures using materials that are no longer being used, with the clear intention of using fewer materials taken from natural resources. His art might reflect the story of his life even more closely than others realize. In the mid-1990s, he owned Jagad Gallery, trading antique furniture in Yogyakarta. Numerous unusable odd bits and pieces from the old antique furniture, architectural elements and tools that accumulated in his warehouse sparked his imagination and gave him new ideas. In his spare time, he began constructing creatures from the material. Just like his life, his art seems to be a matter of being able to quickly adjust to situations and conditions, making the best use of what is available at a point in time, while at the same time always keeping in mind being respectful of others and the natural environment. He takes the old and no longer used pieces and assembles them together into new forms according to his intuition and imagination, creating his artworks from various used materials such as ironwood from railroad tracks, teak wood from broken parts of antique furniture and unused household utensils. When he develops new artistic creations, in many ways he also provides them with a new role and function, thus keeping them from being neglected and discarded.

Taurus
March 21 - April 20
April 21 - May 20
Your willpower is strong at this time with the onward - forward approach. You’ll have the physical energy, emotional stamina, and the drive you need to initiate projects. Good time to go after what you want, not pushily, but with determination and conviction. A restlessness has been growing in you and you may be seeking some adventure. Unless you want to attract criticism, you should tone down your behaviour. It may go against your natural instincts, but the stars favour taking one small step at a time. You pursue desires quickly and express your own sense of self and identity with enthusiasm and courage. If you have been inclined lately to drag your heels or hesitate over important decisions, your mood will turn resolute.
The pressure is on you and a muchneeded respite will certainly help to recharge your batteries. Whether you are making a bid for freedom, recognition or reward, a rare burst of intensity puts you in the spotlight. Your mood may seem rebellious to some, but others will admire the different slant you put on situations. You feel relief or anticipation as a chapter of your life closes and another exciting one open up. If you spot something that you really want, there will be no holds barred as you go after it with a vengeance. Some tension in personal relationships, but nothing that cannot be worked through if you want them to continue. You have plenty of star power at your disposal and should use it wisely to lead others and challenge yourself.
Gemini May 21 - June 21 You may be feeling defeated if you have not made plans. Don’t let people decide what you can and cannot do. You have to start calling the shots if you want to feel good about yourself and your future. You have the ability to make intuitive estimates of personal situations that can be quite startling in their suddenness and accuracy. This is the time to put your personal papers in order and make some fabulous changes that will help you start anew. Taking a new approach or trying out the way people do things will enable you to meld your ideas together, bringing about something new and possibly profitable. Personally, it is time to assert yourself and move forward with your plans that have been germinating for a long while.

You will be paralyzed if you think only of how others will react to your decisions. You really do know what is best, and everyone will benefit when you act upon your beliefs. This is no time to be wishywashy. It’s a great time to meet new people and show them how awesome you are - the right words come much more easily to you now. Something you see or hear helps you take a step in a slightly different, much better direction - perhaps in an important relationship (or one that’s becoming important!). If you know you’ve been rigid, perhaps clinging on to what you were taught as a child rather than forming your own opinions, someone could come along now and help or force you to rethink your philosophies.
Once you truly understand who you are and how you operate, you can make decisions that meet all your needs in a healthy and growth-oriented way. However, because you have been bitten in the past, you will not be easily persuaded to tackle ventures that seem beyond your capability or resources. Realistically, there is no going back but now that a lesson has been learnt you must use the knowledge wisely. Turn negatives to positives. It will not be easy to take responsibilities for your future and break with the past, but the necessity for independent action will be undeniable. You need to take better care of yourself as you have been running around in circles for so long that you are almost giddy.
Over analysing past mistakes or situations you are currently facing will be a waste of time and will lead to anxiety and bad feelings. A desire for stability will be your focus and you will be toeing to conventional line in regards to personal activities. Make sure that your personal interests are well represent and that your need to be out front is met. An intense and thorough reality check will reveal the true nature of a life changing situation in regards to personal activities. If you have your eyes open for a new relationship, don’t fall into the trap of judging by appearance. Some cynics may say that by fearing the worst, we can only be delighted at whatever happens, but you know that is no way to live!

Part of you may wish to maintain the status quo, but an underlying restlessness could see you searching for greener pastures. The planetary patterns hint at change for you but first you must review your current circumstances and relationships. You may be faced with making some big changes to certain areas of your life and will need to think things through. Whatever you are going through now is just the beginning of a new phase of exciting experiences. There are a lot more changes ahead. Personally, proper consideration for any changes should be made to prevent finding your-self abruptly swinging on a shaky limb. If you are not happy with your personal life, this is the time to make changes to improve situations.
You’re not entirely crazy about the changes that are happening right now, but you know deep down that change is an important part of life so you are that much more willing to accept it. Anything you start is likely to change in unexpected ways. Plans get foiled, surprisingly there can be an unlikely turn of events. If possible, try to accept that what’s changing now is doing so because it’s either for the best in some way, or just part of the natural rhythm of life. This is an ideal time for taking the initiative, for introducing an important change or new method that you were unable to implement before. If you’re looking for work, make those phone calls and arrange interviews!
Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21 Allow yourself to be guided by your intuition, you’ll meet no resistance from your colleagues. You’re holding all the cards, so start dealing! Try to listen to the important messages being sent from your inner psyche - your inner self. Dreams may seem more meaningful than ever before, and for a very good reason. Too much prudence and a lack of confidence - either in yourself or in your partners - could mean that you let these chances pass without seizing the moment... What a shame! You may be asked to do something you really don’t want to do. You may not want to agree to this, but feel obliged to help out, thus feeling compromised. If so, try not to bottle up your feelings.

Meet your responsibilities and be accountable for your actions. You can break free for a while and go exploring in order to relax. You feel restless, there is conflict between preserving the status quo and your more personal urges, leading to awkward feelings and possibly some embarrassing scenes. If you’ve already been struggling with one or both of those financial issues recently, matters can be expected to come to a head. Avoid impractical use of money, as it could leave you regretful. Listen to your dreams. Their messages can keep you from making costly mistakes! Beware financial extravagance. Personal and love relationships could also find themselves in the firing line. Perhaps this would be a good time to take a short break or holiday, but do not spend too much.
Do not try to accomplish too much, too quickly - and do not promise more than you can deliver. Financial extravagance and blind optimism may also deplete cash flow. Beware squandering money on unnecessary items, which may seem luxurious now but will be completely useless in a short time. Something in the air might make you reconsider the value some of the things that you thought were great accomplishments over the past. You tend to be a practical person, but you might feel a little disgruntled at having to concentrate on mundane matters like your budget. Your attention will be drawn to financial matters now although feelings and emotions may override your intellect. Careful, this may lead to excess spending!
Your energy might be high as you speed from one encounter to the next. Just remember to keep your folders or documents with you, because it could be easy to leave them behind! Your feelings could be easily hurt during this time, and in retaliation, you may strike out verbally against anyone, and everyone, within shouting distance. The minus side is that your anger will not be justified and may relate to something that happened long ago - an event which everyone but you has forgotten. The energy presently could create some gossip and floating complaints, and if you put out any dramatic comments, they could backfire on you. You may currently feel an overwhelming desire to impose your own ideas, or simply express yourself as an individual.

The Four Attractant Mosquito Trap. This is the mosquito trap that emits light, vibrations, heat, and a scent to attract and kill mosquitoes across a one acre area. An LED light oscillates at frequencies that are proven to appeal to mosquitoes’ spectral sensitivity, and the trap produces gentle vibrations that excite the insects and draw them in. The trap emits infrared heat to simulate human body temperature and produces the smell of octenol (the same chemical in human breath and sweat) to lure mosquitoes to the trap. As mosquitoes gravitate to the unit, a fan pulls them into a collection net where they are trapped and die of dehydration. An independent medical entomologist tested leading traps and the Four Attractant Mosquito trap captured 1,343 mosquitoes per night on average - far superior to competing models that collected as few as 215. An integrated digital timer turns the trap on and off at any time (and any day) you choose. http://www.hammacher.com/ $249.95

You’ve seen them everywhere. Walking along the sidewalk in small tightly packed groups or roaming the streets in rented scooters in a fashion that can be described as anything other than safe. So who are these pasty skinned people and why are there so many of them? What are the common denominators that unite the Bintang singlet tribe? How can they be joined or avoided? The thing about pretty much all people who wear the Bintang singlet proudly in public is that they are almost certainly tourists. Everyone who lives on the island knows this. The taxi drivers

know it, the beach hawkers know it, and every salesperson knows it. So why wear something that screams, “I am a tourist”? Given the nature of most transactions in Bali, the tourist banner is almost always going to be a big flag that says “rip me off”. Which leads you to wonder, why would anybody want to project that image? It’s kind of like throwing buckets of blood on your body before jumping in shark infested water. There are a few untested theories on this strange fashion phenomenon. One being that some people are fashion lemmings. Any individualistic style has been completely stripped away and the best option they see is to jump on the bandwagon along with everyone else. As tourists flock to the island, the trend is set to perpetually repeat itself over and over as they imitate one another and leave the island only to be imitated by the next batch of arrivals. Another theory is that maybe the Bintang shirt is cool and everyone not wearing the famous red star is a no-fun square or some sort of fashion elitist who writes critical and pretentious magazine articles. This could be true, go to Poppies 2 on any night and it seems like the universal uniform of getting loose. Maybe it’s completely worth street hawkers constantly trying to off-load their wares upon you at an unreasonably high profit margin. Perhaps there’s an entire world of people whose entire image of travelling abroad to Bali involves
donning the sacred singlet emblazoned with the magical beer to make said holiday that much more rewarding. If it’s good enough to consume, then why not proudly wear and tell the world that you love this thirst quenching beverage of the gods? Another possibility is that some people simply don’t have any appropriate tropical vacation clothes and the utilitarian singlet is the easiest choice. With a great majority of these garments being the Bintang variety, the odds just happened to land on a Bintang tank top. They’re just victims of fashion and probability at the same time. Another intriguing theory is that they’re subconsciously communists and their other favourite shirts are the Che Guevara, the Chairman Mao, and that Heineken shirt they scored in Amsterdam last summer. It may be a residual effect of being brainwashed “Manchurian Candidate” style. These poor souls just think the red star is fashionable until they hear the secret numbers that activate their commie mission objectives. In all likelihood, it’s probably a combination of all of the above theories with some being more or less correct than the others. Regardless of the likelihood of what makes someone don the Bintang singlet, it seems as popular as ever with absolutely no signs of vanishing from this island any time soon and remains a little bit frightening to the majority of people living here.

nyone from England (like me) will know what I mean when I say that the best time to eat a kebab is usually at around 3.17am in the morning, preferably whilst still heavily intoxicated. Food rice dishes and tasty Turkish dessert delights to traditional teas, coffees, juices and even shishas on the menu. Having not been down Tuban way for quite sometime I was once again amazed at just how buzzing this area has become, yet Kebab Palace has been around on the block for six years keeping many a happy punter fed and watered. Certified 100% Halal, the meat is imported from Australia, and the olive oil and feta cheese direct from Greece. The street side location makes for great people watching, and I order up a refreshing mango lassie (Rp22.900+) whilst observing the throng of people going back and forth along Tuban’s main street. I’ve brought a couple of friends along to help me out this time, and we soon get stuck into a huge plate of warm pita bread with three dips of babaganoush, tzatziki and humus (Rp63,900+). The call tonight is share and share alike, something I’d definitely recommend, and with this in mind we set about jointly demolishing a Greek salad (Rp34,900+).
