Pick up The Beat Jakarta in selected nightlife venues around Jakarta, Starbucks and selected Circle K, Starmart, Hero stores. A full list of venues and distribution pionts is on beatmag.com
This is The Beat Jakarta, the place where you find out what’s happening around town and where you should be going to enjoy the most of it. Big gigs this week in Jakarta include Brazilian heavy rockers Sepultra, who had to cancel last year, but are here to rock your proverbials like never before. That’s at Senayan Swimming Pool next Sunday. Canadian DJs and producers, Sultan & Ned Shepard will be spinning the progressive tracks at Voyeur at Illegals on the Saturday night before. For the ethnically and culturally inclined, an event at the Jakarta Convention Centre is of interest. The 6th Bambu Nusantara World Music Festival featuring Dwiki Dharmawan, Balawan & Batuan Ethnic Fusion, and Viky Sianipar is not to be missed on Thursday, November 1. Last week we were suitably impressed with a visit to Umbra in Kemang that had some top class vocal action from a former Indonesian Idol winner and his band Jethro. It was not a bad lounge venue as well. Then over to the new Molly Malone’s Irish Pub in Arcadia Senayan for a few ales and jives while they were softly opening their new live music venue. A stop at Bibliotheque the night before almost had me buying a new, very expensive watch but thankfully my world famous frugalness once again saved the day. That was a great show from watchmaker Bell & Ross, which turned into quite a fun 40s event. There were plenty of other shows and events to get one excited in the last weeks and you can check them all inside the ThereThen section near the back of this magazine. Well, as the new governor Jokowi takes the reins of the capital and puts a collective smile on everyone’s faces around town with the hope of new and better things to come, we will leave you to another two weeks in the big city that never sleeps (on the weekends anyway). Have fun, Y’all. Any comments or suggestions please send to us at editor@ beatmag.com

DJ Tommy Fans Soundslike Classic Disco, House, Progressive Hails From Jakarta luv’s bar & dine | thursday 1 november Has Been
Talking about DJ Tommy Fans is like reading a chapter in a book on the history of dance music in Jakarta. After a stint as a vocalist in a band, Tommy Fans learned to be a DJ, in what was considered unusual even back then, through tapes. Once he mastered his lessons, Tommy became a DJ in the Q Club in Medan in 1984. He went to Jakarta in 1986 and worked in Nautilus Disco before moved on to Hollywood East a year later and entered the Indonesian DJ competition. His first year in the competition was a failure. He began his winning streak in the second year and became the only Asian DJ to perform in the 1991 World DMC championship in London. His other achievements include winning at the DKI Festival in 1988, Indonesian champion in 1989, and ASEAN DJ Open champion in 1990. Tommy also initiated the production of American LPs for Southeast Asia market. In 2010 he formed DJ Lawas, a group of old school DJs who actively raise funds to help fellow senior DJs.

Tahun 2011 ini, Owl City merilis album berjudul All Things Bright and Beautiful dan setahun kemudian yaitu tahun 2012, diluncurkanlah album barunya yang diberi judul The Midsummer Station. Adam Young experimented with many sounds in his basement and then he merged it with his talent as a songwriter, and thus a project called Owl City was born. Armed with his electronica music, Adam started to introduce his songs via Myspace before signing with Universal Republic in 2008. A year later, his first album, Ocean Eyes, was released with the bestselling single “Fireflies” which went platinum and became a song for the Tap Tap Revenge 3 videogame. He once worked with DJ Armin van Buuren in a track called “Youtopia” for his Mirage album. In 2011, Owl City released its second album called All Things Bright and Beautiful, and this year the latest album called The Midsummer Station launched. Last year, Adam Young appeared for the first time in Jakarta.
After the success of last year’s concert, Indonesia will receive one stop in his world tour. Owl City will perform at Tenis Indoor Senayan Jakarta on November 14.

small-town attitudes he felt were prevalent in small-town America, saying that many of the people he met were “clinging to guns and religion.” Here, he meant what he said but it could have been expressed in more diplomatic language.
The literal English translation of “Harap tidak merokok” (or something similar) is, “It is hoped you won’t smoke” – much more polite and not quite so direct. The more contemporary, userfriendly, English-language version of the “No smoking” sign, now reads “Thank you for not smoking.” (The fact that many ignore these signs – particularly in Jakarta public spaces – is another story.)
In the current campaign, Obama misspoke at one of his rallies, saying, “I want to see us export more jobs” when he meant “more products.” However, he realised his mistake quickly, turning it straight away into a joke aimed at his republican rival.
A recent study by respected agencies in the UK was critical of aspects of personal hygiene, in particular how few people wash their hands after going to the toilet. It also noted the power of social pressure, for hand-washing at certain public conveniences increased significantly when a notice was displayed that read, “Is the person next to you washing their hands?” Clearly, the message is really aimed at you, not the person next to you. The current US presidential election campaign has yielded a rich crop of comments that illustrate the gulf between saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s “whole binders full of women” in reply to a question about equality of opportunity for women was a kind of verbal shorthand, maybe understandable to those who work in an office environment. However, he wasn’t really saying what he meant. What he was referring to was the biodata and CVs (contained in ring binders) of women considered potentially suitable for employment in the Massachusetts administration while he was state governor. The unintended consequence of the rather odd turn of phrase is that many women were offended by what they perceived as a somewhat demeaning attitude and terminology. In the 2008 campaign, then-candidate Barack Obama, criss-crossing the US, made an unguarded but unflattering comment about the
Another faux pas that any of us could make is when a completely private remark of ours is overheard by others. In the case of people in public life, this can occur if it is assumed a microphone has been switched off when in reality it has not. Towards the end of the 2010 UK general election campaign, then-prime minister Gordon Brown met a retired woman on a campaign walkabout who engaged him in discussion about immigration policy. After it was over he returned to his car and briefly mentioned the incident to one of his aides, adding he thought the woman was a bigot. Unfortunately, Brown’s lapel microphone from the TV station covering the event was still live and the comment was eventually broadcast on air. With the election only days away, the completely unguarded but candid comment was thought to be so damaging by the PM’s spin doctors that he immediately abandoned much of his day’s planned schedule to be filmed visiting the woman’s house apologising to her. Curiously though, polls taken a few days later did not appear to show a huge dent in Brown’s popularity, although he did go on to lose the election anyway. Whether or not we are in the public eye, it certainly pays to think carefully about the words we use for they become the message, and illchosen words can provoke hostile reactions. (Jim Read)

Why Jakarta Rules
I
experienced what you could call a spiritual moment the other day when I was sitting in a dimly-lit lounge, wondering where the evening was going. Recently, Jakarta to me had been all about getting drunk enough to chat up women. Period. That night at Umbra, however, I re-discovered something else.

The band came on; your usual bunch of good looking lads. Hmm, no women, big deal. However, when the man at the microphone started singing, my goodness. A voice like a cross between Barry White and every RnB singer from the 1990s until today swept across the room. The band I had so casually dismissed were so into their music, the entire stage was shaking as they bopped their heads and flailed their instruments around. They say Jakarta is the home of live music in Southeast Asia. I was immediately reminded why. It reminded me of a time, not so long ago, when going out meant having a good time. With friends, good drinks, good atmosphere and great music. In unlikely places such as outdoor warungs, cafes, clubs, restaurants and everything in between, Jakarta rocks to the vibes of musicians. Everywhere you go, people, regardless of their place in society or their views – everyone here loves live music. I have seen a young man, clearly living on the rougher edges of society, sleeping in a disused telephone box, so small that his knees were bent and his Afro pushed back by the tiny container. However, he had his guitar, his James Morrison posters and by God he was singing. Whether you’re into jazz, rock, soul, RnB, acoustic-electronic-live-dance, or everything in between, Jakarta has something for you. The energy these performers put into live gigs puts experienced Western bands to shame. You will never see more passion for the sheer joy of music and playing to a crowd than you do in Jakarta. Back to the lounge. While just a while ago I was pondering the merits of meeting women in a club, I found myself snapping my fingers, doing awkward jives and singing along. Forget the women.

You see, sometimes we lose sight of what makes a good night out. That is to have a good time. Thank you, Jakarta’s live music performers, for reminding me how. (The band Jethro plays at Umbra, Jl Taman Kemang 1 No. 6, Kemang. Friday nights)

etelah relatif sukses menggedor blantika musik Indonesia lewat Released by Reality pada 2009, tiga tahun berselang, Ray D’Sky kembali datang.
Ikuti terus perkembangannya lewat situs resminya: www.raydsky.com

f you are into reggae, cold beer and the hot summery beaches, then Ray D’Sky will suit you. After releasing their breakthrough debut album Released by Reality in 2009, the Jakarta band has made a comeback with their latest album, just released a few weeks ago: Dreaming Dreams.
According to Aray, unlike the previous album, this new release puts less emphasis on the use of acoustic instruments and more focus on groove-driven songs. The album reflects a positive and energized new chapter in Aray’s life as expressed in Dreaming Dreams: “You know the sun will always be the sun, just like we will never live without love. But I’m not always gonna be the same, ‘cause everyday people change…”

Featuring 12 songs, the album was recorded in different islands across Indonesia. It was produced by Aray Daulay, who is also the main guy behind Ray D’Sky and backed up by Didit Saad. Presenting “Terjebak di Pulau yang Indah” as the first single, the album is peppered with several brilliant local artists, including Ras Muhamad, Indra Q, Syaharani, and Njet Barmansyah.

I
can’t believe it’s already almost the end of October! In addition to panicking whether we have reached our yearly target at work, it’s also that quarter where you need to do your planning for the year ahead *sigh*. But another thing about this quarter of the year is that it’s time when holiday collections start to pop up. A very exciting season I must say.
NARS was first to launch with the Andy Warhol Collection, which so far, has received good reviews. While that collection is not available in Indonesia, the next one that I’m very much lusting over, will be available by November. It’s the Make Up For Ever Holodiam Collection for Holiday 2012. The Holodiam Collection embodies a very bright, glamorous and glittering holiday look. Think about the parties that you want to attend during this holiday season.

ENCHANTING BLING in BRILLIANT ROSE
M
ondial Jeweler is a well-known jeweler with a beautiful diamond collection. They have just introduced their a new one, Mondial Brilliant Rose, a modified round cut diamond. I just found out that normally, a regular round cut diamond has a total of 58 facets. Redefining the classic cut of round diamond, Mondial Brilliant Rose has 66 precision cut facets, more than a regular round diamond. The 66-cut facet maximizes the light reflection, which makes it simply a more blingy diamond that can be seen with the naked eye, which we all want.
The unique thing about Mondial Brilliant Rose is that it’s inspired by the stained glass window of the Notre Dame Cathedral known as the “Rosace”. The mesmerizing beauty and spectacular colors reflected from the sunlight that glows through the window became an inspiration for the master diamond artisans to create an extraordinary diamond cut that shines brighter.
Each facet of the Mondial diamond is positioned precisely opposite each other, so that a beam of light entering the stone from above hits the facet of the pavilion and travels through the centre of the stone hitting the opposite facet. Then it bounces upwards, breaking through the crown in an explosion of brilliance. Those reflections are what makes your diamond shine so brightly.

What I learned from last week’s experience is, before buying a diamond, make sure you know and understand about these four factors :
2. 3. 4.
Cut - Cut has the greatest impact on the beauty of the stone. Clarity - Diamonds are graded for clarity from Flawless (Fl) to Included 3 (I3). Color - Diamond colors are graded from D to Z. D is the most colorless. Carat - One carat is weighed at 0.200 grams, and is divided into 100 points, just like cents in a dollar. As large diamonds are rarer than small diamonds, they also cost more per carat.
To make it easier to understand, let’s say I’m going to buy a diamond with my cousin. Mine has flawless clarity and the color that I pick is D, whereas my cousin also picked a diamond with flawless clarity but in I color, of course my diamond is more beautiful and has higher price, and my cousin’s diamond is more yellow. Or in another scenario, we buy the same D color diamonds, but the clarity is different. I got VVS1 (one grade under flawless), my cousin got VS1 (three grades under flawless). Still, the diamond with the clarity closest to flawless will be more beautiful. We can buy diamonds for investment, too. You can sell it, so I think it would be safer if we buy certified diamonds. But, if we compare diamond with gold, go with gold. But again, for some people, diamonds brings such happiness, unless you come from a diamond producing country wrought with civil war. Now that you’re equipped with more knowledge about diamonds, you’ll surely know how to choose one more carefully. If you’re interested to visit Mondial Jeweler stores, you can go to Plaza Indonesia and Plaza Senayan.

oup Restaurant is a Singapore based Chinese eatery that made its way to Indonesia in 2006. It is one of the most reliable places in town for some of the tastiest Chinese food in Jakarta. And with a reasonable price too, which is always a good thing. After Plaza Indonesia and PX Pavilion, Soup Restaurant opened up their latest outlet at a new mall called Kuningan City and that’s where we visited them recently. With a feel that resembles a traditional Chinese restaurant from years gone by, there’s nothing too fancy about the interior. But there is one area of the restaurant which looks like a courtyard, dramatically accented with a big replica of a cherry blossom tree.
Chinese cuisine is comforting at all levels. The food here is carefully prepared and consistently reliable, and there’s a plethora of Chef’s specials to choose from. Forget the singular name for a bit, there are definitely more soups to satisfy even the most discerning of appetites. Served piping hot, the soups here are the main draw. All of them have some kind of health benefits, courtesy of the numerous herbs and spices in the ingredients. We chose a couple of items, the Double Boiled Tien Chee with Chicken Soup (32k), and the Double Boiled Dried Scallop with Chicken Soup (45k). The former is believed to increase your blood flow, and the latter is also good for your blood flow, plus it can act as a stress reliever. Now, we all know that

chicken soup is good for you, but with the addition of some exotic elements, it can become quite an elixir. The herbs and spices really give the hearty broth an extra lift. Another signature dish at Soup Restaurant that’s a must have is the Samsui Ginger Chicken (80k for a small portion, 160k for large). The chicken is prepared in the same traditional way, made originally by the Samsui women from years gone by. The whole chicken is steamed cooked for a pre-determined duration and temperature, thus maintaining its tenderness, rich aroma, and taste. And there is an art of consuming this dish; you dip the slices of chicken into the very tasty ginger sauce and wrap them with fresh lettuce. It is simply a divine dish!
The tender meat is wonderfully marinated, and topped with aromatic mix of garlic, peppers, and a bit of chili. Delicious! Other notable dishes are the Singapore Cereal Prawn (72k), and the Beggar Bowl Tofu (30k). There’s nothing poor about the taste, though. The silky smooth tofu is submerged in a rich garlicky broth. As for greens, try the Po Cai Vegetable and Enokitake Mushroom in Oyster Sauce (45k). The Oolong or Chrysanthemum Tea (8k each) is of course the usual choice of beverage for such a meal, but the home made Soybean Milk (20k) is getting quite popular. And for dessert, you can’t go wrong with the lovely Lemon Grass Birdnest (38k).
But wait, there’s more… Sure, the Black Pepper Beef (50k) may sound like a reliable choice, Soup Restaurant is an excellent choice for a but why don’t you indulge yourself and give great Chinese cuisine experience; soups and the flavorful Deep Fried Venison (95k) a try? beyond. (Budi Iskandar)

Things You Should Know About Evelyn Merrelita By Erza S.T.
W
e can say that Surabaya’s original soprano: Evelyn Merrelita’s career in the Indonesian classical music scene is still relatively new. However her incredible voice and professionalism has put her immediately in the direction of her seniors. The Beat Jakarta decided to get to know Evelyn Merrelita who has won Ananda Sukarlan’s singing competition and recently performed as one of the stars on CIMB Niaga Opera Gala. These are 10 things you should know about her.
1. My Background Story I was born in a musical family. My father was a drummer in church and my mother loves singing very much. My father was the one who introduced me to jazz and big bands like Glenn Miller, Al Jarreau and also a little bit of oldies rock. From my mother, I got introduced to Indonesian oldies and even Keroncong. Even as a child, I already had dreams to be either a painter or a singer. I fell in love with classical music when I was around five or six years old. I got inspired after seeing my cousin playing some easy pieces on the piano and watched a scene from Operation Dumbo Drop that had Mozart's famous aria from the Magic Flute. However back then, I didn't understand the music and all I can think of is to play piano like my cousin, but we couldn’t really afford it back then. 2. My Inspiration The inspiration to sing classical music comes from when I was studying at Petra Christian University, majoring in graphic design. Back then
we have to choose an extra student activity and as some of my friends from high school were choir members, they pushed me to join the choir. I was reluctant at first because in my head, the image of a choir was boring, unchallenging and used number notation instead of music notation (I was so naïve and thought everything that has music notation was classical music). This was the time when I met Aris Sudibyo B.C.M. who was just finishing his study at the Singapore Bible College (SBC) majoring in voice. He was the new choir coach at that time and he tought us to sing using a "real" score. I was so surprised that such music actually existed. He then offered us to learn more about voice and introduced us to Joyce Deborah Thungriallu, his junior in SBC. Joyce became my first vocal teacher. Things are just developed from there. I fell in love instantly with classical singing and never stopped since. The biggest influence arrived when I was studying under Richard Samuel Awuy, who was my vocal teacher since 2002 until 2011. Under his guidance, I blossomed into the soprano that I am now.
4. On Winning the Competition I actually entered the competition without even knowing what prizes the winner would get. I honestly didn't really care, because what I wanted was to gain experience in singing competitions. Even after I finally won, I still didn’t know what the prize was for a few months. It turned out that the prize was a leading role in Ananda Sukarlan’s latest opera at the time that was specially made for me and for the other winner from the Senior 1 category. I've been working with Ananda Sukarlan ever since in various occasions. This win also opened up a lot of opportunities to work with great musicians such as Aning Katamsi and Richard Zeller (The Metropolitan Opera singers). It helped to position my career to be where it is now. 5. On Ananda Sukarlan's opera: Laki - Laki Sejati (A True Man) The most interesting yet challenging thing in this opera is the fact that the music is totally new and it has set a standard that was totally new to
me. This opera allows me to explore it as free as I like and to be as much as the composer wants it to be. The challenge for me was to sing such odd intervals that are difficult to understand at first, and to work together with another character in this opera. 6. My Future Dream? My dream is to be an international singer that has an Indonesian identity. This is what I am currently pursuing now. Meanwhile, I also want to gain more knowledge in formal music education. 7. Jakarta or Surabaya? No, I love living in Surabaya and I have an obligation to myself and to God to educate people here about what classical music singing is actually all about. There are plenty of talented singers and musicians here, but only a few credible teachers available. 8. Definition of A Great Singer A great singer is not only about having a beautiful voice and highly skilled or trained technique; but she/he should have a good attitude, manners, musicality, quick self-learning, discipline and a rounded understanding of music itself. 9. On Voice Maintenance I do breathing exercises for about an hour everyday. If I have an upcoming event, then I do it longer as breathing muscles are crucial in singing classical. I enjoy eating, however, a few weeks before a big event; I usually avoid all kinds of chips and fried food. They are my Achilles heel. 10. If I Am Not a Soprano? I will be an alto! Hahahahahaha A great alto!

3. On Singing Competitions and Challenges Ananda Sukarlan’s vocal competition in April 2011 was my first competition ever. There were no such open competitions like this in Indonesia before and I was so excited to join. The repertoires were very challenging for us. We had to prepare two sets of songs for the semifinal and final, as we were not allowed to sing the same songs for those stages. I prepared 15 songs! The repertoire was expanded from Ananda Sukarlan’s vocal compositions, other Indonesian composers, two art songs in foreign languages and an opera aria or oratorio. The challenge here is stamina, especially after singing six to seven songs nonstop. It was very nerve-wracking and mentally exhausting.

Skyfall Action, Adventure, Thriller. Director: Sam Mendes. Writers: Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, John Logan. Cast: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris. “My name is Bond.” Who isn’t familiar with that line and doesn’t know which Bond it refers to? He just might even be the most famous film icon with 23 films produced, longest film franchise ever. In this third reboot, James Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past is revealed. While an international incident is unfolding, MI6 is under attack and its active undercover agents getting leaked onto internet, Bond must seek Silva, a dangerous villain claiming to have a secret connection with both Bond and M. Be prepared to be blown away by Bond’s action, stunts, gadgets, and charms…
Paranormal Activity 4 Horror. Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman. Writers: Christopher Landon, Chad Feehan. Cast: Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton, Sprague Grayden, Matt Shively, Brady Allen.
During the first movie, this gullible writer was in shock wondering if it was real footage. When the second one came out, they couldn’t fool me twice, but it still managed to make me wee my pants with their twists. Last year, the third one at least got me with some new camera angles that creeped me out. This sequel is still much anticipated by many fans of this horror franchise as it will continue what the last three films led to and will feature the protagonist from the original. Will there be sequel after this one too? Probably. Will I lose sleep wondering if its for real this time? You betcha.
Wreck-it Ralph Animation, Comedy, Family. Director: Rich Moore. Writers: Jennifer Lee, Phil Johnston. Cast: John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Ed O’Neill. After watching the Toy Story series, we all know what happens to toys after we leave the room. But what happens to video game characters? A video game villain gets sick of playing the same part in an arcade machine for 30 years and escapes into other video games helping out their characters along the way. Adventures and shenanigans ensue and because this is a Disney film, you pretty much know what you’ll be getting.

The Epic of Brasilia. A Photographic Exhibition Now – 7th Nov

In collaboration with Erasmus Huis, the Brazilian Embassy has the privilege of bringing this photographic exhibit to and for the people of Indonesia. The Epic of Brasilia reveals the Brazilian capital during the days it underwent a major construction and facelift. In 1957, Åke Borglund, a young Swedish photographer, earned a prize that brought him to an extended journey to South America. He was particularly attracted by the innovative projects of revolutionary architects such as Oscar Niemeyer & Lucio Costa. He really discovered and captured the work and transformation of the natural environment at that time. The monumental capital is now recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site and now Indonesia has the chance to see it before its glory days. Erasmus Huis, Kuningan. Jakarta
