Bali has been dominating global news again in the past weeks with the APEC Summit being held in Nusa Dua, which finished up just before this magazine hit the streets. A bunch of heads of state and hundreds of delegates managed to close the airport, block the roads, drank a zillion cups of tea and came up with just about nothing besides one rather good birthday party. What we got out of it though was marginally better; new roads, new airport, new infrastructure and loads of free press. However, with all that free press we’ll be needing a lot more roads and a bigger airport quick to cater to the millions more people coming to enjoy the flavours of this island. The only thing missing was Barry. As we all know ol’ Bazza loves Indonesia and even wrote his first biography here back in Bali in the early nineties. I’m sure he would have enjoyed being here in his old stomping grounds as the leader of the world but that was unfortunately not to be due to his opposition buddies in the US government messing up his budget and basically the United States. I’m sure everyone was greatly disappointed by Obama not arriving as planned but the show must go on and that it did. Indonesia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and we’re proud that Bali and this country could host such a large scale and prestigious event, taking its place amongst the leading nations of the world. But let’s not let that go to our heads, we’ve got some partying to do. There are some very big DJs and bands on the way in the next weeks, starting this Friday night at Sky Dome with Aussie chargers, The Stafford Brothers. On Monday Pyramid hosts Jakarta’s Stadium club’s decks leader Bobby Suryadi, and Hard Rock Cafe will be rocking with UK band Bring Me The Horizon and again on Tuesday with Guiness Arthurs Day presenting Firehouse and Steelheart. It’s sure to be a big Thursday night at Deejay Cafe with Jerome Isma-Ae behind the decks next week. Then on Friday we have Satoshi Fumi at The Townhouse and Tini at Mint. There is plenty on around town to keep you up late and in the saddle. Enjoy.

SCOOP InterContinental Reaffirmed Its Status as a Family-Friendly Resort This year marks the third consecutive year in which Intercontinental Resort earned a spot as one of Bali’s Top 10 Family-Friendly Resorts. The poll conducted by one of Australia’s major family travel magazine and website, Holidays with Kids took into account many variables before coming out with the crème de la crème of family-friendly resorts. Some of the crucial criteria are the availability of activities and facilities for children, babysitting services, hospitality, safety, standard of accommodation and location. Readers were asked to vote for the best family-friendly resorts with another two key areas in mind which are value for money and overall experience. It is only natural for Intercontinental to snap the coveted position, given its secure location and expansive landscape as well as its Planet Trekkers – one of the facilities dedicated to young travelers.

He moved to Jakarta in 1990 and spun vinyl at many clubs such as Manhattan, Atlanta, Horizon, Ebony, and M Club along with other venues in Indonesia until he found his way to one of Jakarta’s most notorious clubs in Kota, Stadium.

Why see him
If you love the Stadium sound and lifestyle, and wish you could be part of it here in Bali, well lucky you, Suryadi will be playing over at Pyramid next week with resident Shammui. It’s like two after-hours entities meeting each other and becoming one. Catch Bobby at Pyramid on Monday October 14.

Jerome Isma-ae
THURSDAY oct 17
Roots
Hailing from Munich, Jerome Isma-Ae is one of the highest-selling, most successful progressive house DJ/ producers of late. He has been a musician since he was in elementary school, after having been taught to play several music instruments. At the age of 12, he played the bass in a metal band, when he turned 15 he started to program his first beats with a drum machine and three years later he released his first record on a German techno label called Delirium Records. Jerome is reinventing and designing the sounds since the early years of electronic dance music. The first few years of Jerome’s career were all about exploring the different sides of music. A year after his first release, he teamed up with Marcel Krieg and gave birth to the Future Funk project, bringing a successful combination of house, disco, soul and funk.
Sounds
Trance, house, techno.
Where you might have heard him
His remix of “Push The Feeling On” made it #1 in the U.S. Billboard Dance Charts in 2002, it was #1 in the German Dance Charts in 2004. Jerome’s dirty, hot remix of ‘Guru Josh Project- Infinity 2008’, one of that year’s biggest Dance anthems, made it #1 in the UK Club Chart. The single achieved gold status in Australia and Germany; it peaked at #1 on the Dutch and French Singles Chart, and #3 on the UK Singles Chart. His inspirational, up front releases such as “Rokit” and “Phantom” have graced the catalogues of every prominent label from Armada Music and Hope Records to Ministry Of Sound. His “Underwater Love” was voted Best Chill Out Track for the Beatport Music Awards 2009. He’s one of the few DJ/producers with true crossover appeal, with his tracks being just as popular with Armin van Buuren and Markus Schulz as they are with Pete Tong and Hernan Cattaneo. Jerome has produced countless remixes for international artists; latest jobs include Paul van Dyk and Way Out West.
Why see him
To Jerome, it’s that well balanced blend of styles that makes the ride worthwhile. Nowadays, though most of his work is labeled “progressive house”, his productions are still influenced by house, disco, soul and funk. Furthermore, his signature remixes also attracted many big names such as Audi and Marlboro, to use Jerome’s service of remix production in their commercials. It’s guaranteed that you will have one progressive time next Thursday night. Head down to Deejays on October 17 to get ya nod on. www.beatmag.com

Bip Ling
thursday oct 17
Roots
Bipasha Ling aka Bip Ling is a very influential fashion blogger, a model as well as a DJ, who comes from Kolkata, India and currently splits her time between New York City and London. Being raised by a father and a mother (Tanya Ling) who both work in the fashion illustration industry did not dissuade her from pursuing her passion, DJing, at the age of 17. That was also the age when she started working at one of Diane von Furstenberg’s shops at Wimbledon Village, London.
Sounds
House, techno
Where you might have heard her
Her presence in the social media cosmos, precisely on www.bipling.com is full of color and ideas. Her site has drawn almost 1.5 million visitors since she started it in 2009, amongst the million readers are big publications around the country such as Vogue, Nylon, Elle, Love and major fashion retailers like Forever 21 and Loewe which utilized her for major fashion campaigns. Despite this, music is actually her first love. No stranger to London’s DJing circuit, Ling has her own group of fans and her own Monday morning playlist on her website. Some of her top tunes on her party playlist are Blondie’s “Rapture”, Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and The Stone Roses’ “Fools Gold”. Ling’s debut track entitled “Stunts Da Mixtape” was done in collaboration with US producer Aaron LaCrate.
Why see her
Bip Ling is one of the voices of Generation Y. One can realize that when one visits her virtual home with all sorts of quirky images all over. Taming London’s club punters is not an easy task for any DJ let alone for a young lady like her. Check her out for yourself when she plays at Woo Bar on October 17.

Satoshi Fumi
friday oct 18
Roots
Originally from the city of Tokyo, Japan Satoshi Fumi was a promising and energetic DJ. Before his first forays into the dance scene, Satoshi used to play in a band when he was younger and guess what, he did it all, from vocals, guitar, bass, the keyboard, to drums. Since the band only played original songs, Satoshi was set on the right track to explore the deeper parts of the world of music until he found himself attracted to the Detroit, Chicago and New York house and techno movements in the 90s.
Sounds
Deep house, tech house, techno
Where you might have heard him
Those dance music movements left a big impression on Satoshi, to the extent that he first observed and digested, and then transformed into what he is today, a DJ with his own signature style – deep tech house. His big breakthrough came around in 2002, when Deep Dish from DC took Satoshi’s track entitled “Protlex” and dropped it on a CD on their Yoshitoshi Recordings. Moving forward, his mix “Dub Beatlex” shared a similar fate by getting licensed to Desyn Masiello in that same year for his Symphonic (DJ Magazine) compilation and also featured on Phil K’s Balance 004 (EQ / Stomp) mix. Cutting to the chase, he has played at many major venues across the world and holds residency at Sensual at Womb Lounge in Tokyo. Sharam Jey
saturday oct 19
Roots
Originally from the city of Cologne in Germany, Sharam Jey, whose real name is Sharam Nickjey Khososi is an immensely popular DJ, producer and label maker. His first foray into the world of music began as a singer in a rock band when he was 14 years old. In the early 90s, Jey sneaked into the city’s biggest club called Warehouse, and pretty soon Germany’s dance music punters would know his name well.
Sounds
Electronica, indie dance, nu disco, house, deep house, breakbeat, techno
Where you might have heard him
Not long after being responsible (with André Strässer) for the Three N’ One remix of Café Del Mar’s “Energy 52” (voted as ‘Best Dance Track Of All Time’ by Mixmag in 1997), many prominent artists came knocking at Jey’s door. He lent his magic touch to the works of the likes of Moby, Mylo, Faith No More and loads more. In 2001, Jey founded his first music label called King Kong Records, on which, the music released received positive acclaim by DJs such as Darren Emerson whom Jey first met in Ibiza and later made his partner in mixing “Underwater Episode 4” in 2005. That was also the year Jey finally decided to drop his first studio album entitled 4 Da Loverz on Underwater Records, earning him the cover of DJ Magazine. Soon, names like Princess Superstar, Tommie Sunshine, Andreas Hogby, collaborated with Jey. Two years after releasing his latest album entitled In My Blood (2010), he created another label called Bunny Tiger with support by DJ Solomon and DJ Jaimie Jones.
Why see him
Living in the moment and visioning the future is what might describe Sharam Jey as a musician. His acuity in this business made him the uncrowned king of his genre. See him lay down the tracks on October 19 at Cocoon Beach Club.

Roots
The name Sten Olof Hallström aka Stone Bridge should not be foreign to you, especially if you’re a house music fan. Born in Stockholm in 1961, the young Stone Bridge had been searching for his true passion, trying his hand at the piano, clarinet and guitar, but 1983 marked the year in which he started spinning as a DJ. He went on to remix with other local DJs under the name Swemix, and has never looked back since.
Sounds House
Where you might have heard him
If you’ve heard his remix of Robin S’s “Show Me Love” (1993), chances are you have been listening to him. As of today, Stone Bridge’s remix portfolio has included works by world renowned musicians like Usher (“Love In This Club”), Britney Spears (“Gimme Me More”), Taio Cruz (“Dynamite”) to Lily Allen (“The Fear”) just to name a few. His remix for Ne-Yo’s “Closer” even went on to garner a Grammy Award nomination. His unique house music style has landed him gigs in a whole lot of places, from Ruby Skye in San Francisco to London’s Ministry of Sound and Pacha, as well as from Australia’s Future Music Festival to SPiN Festival in Dallas and Anchorage. In 2004, his debut album entitled Can’t Get Enough which contained hit tracks like “Put ‘Em High” and “Take Me Away” reached UK Top 10 and sold over 60 000 copies. Currently, he heads his own label called Stoney Boy Music founded in 1997. Lately he just scored another global #1 hit as co-writer of Jason Derulo’s “Don’t Wanna Go Home”. To compliment his business further, Stone Bridge also hosts his own radio show “The Flavour The Vibe” for Sirius XM Satellite.

We can’t reiterate any further on why you should see him. See him headlining the night at Velvet Hypnotized on October 25!

Mike Jolly
friday oct 25
Roots
Mike Jolly is a producer, remixer and DJ hailing from Essex, England and is now based in Singapore. Everything good that one can expect from house music dawned upon him in the early 90s. Prior to that, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, Front 242 and Cabaret Voltaire influenced him and his mate Mike Angel to write and produce their own music at the age of 15.
Sounds
House, electro house
Where you might have heard him
Up until 2003, Jolly had been releasing originals under some of his monikers, as well as remixing works of artists like Jimmy Somerville (Bronski Beat/ Communards) and The Lisa Marie Experience. In 2003, Jolly finally ventured out of his comfort zone and landed in Malaysia, where he began record-spinning in front of the crowds at the now-famous Twenty One club. Not long after he earned residencies at two clubs in Kuala Lumpur and played gigs at the vibrant major venues all over the country. Only in 2009, did Jolly decide to move to the city-state of Singapore where he founded his own label called 9th Floor Recordings. His first as well as the biggest anthem to date released on the imprint was “In Between”, which was quickly recognized by Fierce Angel Recordings after Jolly’s blazing performance of the track when opening for Mark Doyle in Kuala Lumpur in 2011. That year, the track reached #19 on the Music Week UK Commercial Pop Club Chart, and was featured on the Fierce Disco VI compilation in July, after previously being featured on The Collection II compilation.
Why see him
Apart from travelling around the region, including Bali, his latest prolific project takes on works by Terry Farley & Stretch Silvester, OMD, Atlantic Drift, and marm-E-duke as well as a collaboration with Danny Thorn. See him spinning at Hu’u Bar on October 25.

Mac Pedari is the guy behind the premiere afterhours destination on the island-Pyramid. The Beat caught up with a few questions… Please, tell us your life story in three acts. Act 1 - Middle east, Dubai/Persia, growing up, studies, family life. Act 2 - US, more studies, life experience, work experience, media, marketing, mentored, maturing (nearly). Act 3 - Europe, discipline, own businesses, mentoring, money, freedom. Act 4 - Asia, grounding, investments, matured, love myself, consciousness. You rebel. How did the Pyramid concept come about? Pyramid was created by Bapak Ariono in Bali and as usual the universe has its way to connect the right people with their right directions, hence why I was presented to this project. Personally, Pyramid is based on my family’s generational beliefs of intelligence beyond this planet. The Pyramid is a symbol of stability and universal communication and not the common belief of Egyptian masonry. It is beyond human intelligence and craftsmanship. As for the Club, it seemed a perfect name for our individual ideology. Our intention is to create a space for all races to connect and communicate.

You’ve said you have worked as a private detective, tell us more about that. I guess I shouldn’t go into too much details regarding this question. It is a family business carried on by my father, his father and the fathers before them. We carry out operations for governments/embassies around the world, no private sector. Personally I direct the BBI, Bai Byra of Investigations, but not as an active agent anymore. More of the behind the scenes man, the analyst. This is the first public announcement regarding this matter and hopefully the last. How has that helped you in running a successful club? Well, it hasn’t and will not help the clubs direction or goals, but of course when it comes to protection, legal issues and government connections it has and will always be beneficial. Basically it opens doors that normally would be air tight shut. Tell us about your personal taste in music. The music of Gods - High frequency... Techno beats. I do listen to nearly everything, except for emotional songs. I guess there is the right music for the right moments.
FEATURE refreshing and back by 10pm for club briefing and operational start. The process ends by 7am. This is done six days a week, with the exception of Mondays until Wednesdays where I finish around 4am. A very hectic and full on schedule, and the only way its possible is by truly being passionate about what I do and believe in. Love in other words. What’s the biggest fringe benefit to running Pyramid? Except for the economical benefits that come along with a big company and its recourses. The fact that we are now the only big club that has both foreign and local clients under one big roof, basically the new 66 club created during a different and new era. Also being the only international club that actually has a proper dance floor and a separate lounge. Wide space allowing more comfort and a fresh environment, a capacity up to 750 guests. And let’s not forget, one of the only clubs that is open until dawn.
What are your long term goals for Pyramid and yourself? The long term goals for Pyramid is surely creating an international club with full entertainment and music genres, different levels. We have a long term contract at Pyramid which allows us to move cautiously and plan ahead wisely and not being stressed to take in fast money during a short period of time. We wish and will create a club that combines beauty, harmony and top level service, and so far we have been able to present that to the public with much more to come for sure. We have been around now for a year and we and our customers are happy with what we have created together. As for my personal goals, I wish to become more and more conscious about myself which will lead to a universal consciousness. Also to continue my motivation and constructive sessions that I hold via seminars and personal one on one sessions. Business wise, I need to finish my goals at Pyramid before pursuing other projects in the future as a consultant. Describe your typical day running the club. The day begins at 11am in the Pyramid office with staff and supervisor briefings, collaboration and sponsor meetings, director meetings, lunch, marketing and design productions, creative meetings, event organizing, problem solving, staff management, dinner by 8pm... and home,
Drawback? There are of course issues along any way taken in life, but as long as we handle them professionally and logically it always turns out right fine. Tell us about upcoming events. We have continuous events that are produced in house every month. We are open now from Monday until Saturday every week, 11pm until Dawn. Our Friday and Saturdays are strictly club nights presented by DJ Hugo Marti- Spain and the notorious DJ Shammui - Singapore, and international DJ performances. On thursdays we have different genres of music, 1st thursday of the month we present BASS IN MOTION, a drum’n’bass club featuring DJ Paulina and the drum and bass community, 3rd thursday of the month we have DOLCE VITA, a live act performance by Manga Electrika, Martin Denev starring special artist performances and it attracts mainly the Italian community in Bali, the 4th Thursday in the month we present SPHINX, a trans music genre night by Alex Retox and Adrey P. and is supported by Bali’s Trans community. Monday until Wednesday Pyramid has its social network nights where all our friends together with several modeling agencies gather and network together with drinks and music, very personal and intimate nights. We are for the time being negotiating with a few international big name DJ’s that we will soon make public, and Yes as soon a we have settled the deals, they will for sure amaze everyone with the line up that we will present. A big room club needs big name DJs, period. www.beatmag.com

y friend is getting married, she’s Balinese and so is her fiancé. The tradition is that the wife moves in with the husband’s family, which seems a little strange to us Westerners but in fact, is really sweet. In this case, the son is an only child. His parents are already getting on and there will be no one to take care of them if the son sets off to make his own life. In the West, we do things so differently and the nursing homes are full of old people who rarely get visitors. Old people are often seen living alone, fending for themselves. In some cases, the children have moved far from home and can’t get back to see their aging parents as often as they might like, or possibly it’s an out of sight, out of mind situation. In the case of my grandfather, his wife died twenty years before he finally passed away in his 90s. Thankfully he lived fairly centrally and he had four surviving children, all of whom had children of their own and we all made the effort to drop in regularly.

The attitudes to women however, seem a little skewed, in the scheme of things. There are plenty of cases where women have been abandoned by their husbands and become pariahs. In Bali, even widows seem to get a bad rap. The idea of moving in with the in-laws must be quite irksome to some women as well. Mothers–in-law around the world can be difficult at best and sometimes cruel and evil. The traditional Balinese woman is well advised to check out his parents before giving it away. Chatting with a Balinese friend the other day, the subject of a man we know who isn’t too kind to his wife, came up. He is doing well and looks great, despite the passing years. His wife however, is looking tired and not looking happy. “Of course,” says the Balinese male, “things are much easier for men. He feels his wife is too old for him now, and the young girls they like him. He has money and freedom, so he’s not being very nice to his wife.” Ah, the classic tale, man gets tired of aging wife, searches for younger version. “Yes,” says my wise Balinese friend,” that’s why in Bali, men are called ‘laki-laki’.” Aha, so that is the reason. A great example of making the shoe fit, or in this case, the title.

The Late-Princess of Wales, a super jail, and pirates of the somali sea by: pande
Fall is the time for studios to put Hollywood blockbusters to rest and bring out less grandiose films. Here are three films that are actually worth a gander. Two of our films are based on true people. The larger than life Princess Diana and the humble Captain Phillip whose ship was boarded by Somali pirates. On the improbable side of things, Stallone and Schwarzenegger team up to break out of a super jail. With high season on its deathbed, it might be time to check out the DVD shop or go to www.21cineplex.com for movie times.
Diana Biography, Drama. Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel. Writer: Stephen Jeffreys (screenplay), Kate Snell (book). Cast: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews, Cas Anvar, Laurence Belcher, Harry Holland, Douglas Hodge.
After getting divorced from Prince Charles, Princess Diana (Naomi Watts) soon is found in a romantic relationship with a heart surgeon, Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). The biopic pretty much covers what we all know from then on in a rather dramatic fashion. This film by the director of Oscar-nominated Der Untergang, at its best, tries to portray the last two years of the life of the late Princess of Wales, however, many British papers gave it negative marks for Watts’ performance along with historical inaccuracies.
Escape Plan Action, Mystery, Thriller. Director: Mikael Håfström. Writer: Miles Chapman (screenplay and story), Jason Keller (screenplay). Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel, 50 Cent, Vinnie Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio, Amy Ryan.
Stallone plays a consultant who specializes in prison breaks in order to identify weakness in a correctional facility. He soon finds himself with a contract to test out a new secret super facility only to find that there is a conspiracy to incarcerate him for life. Enter Schwarzenegger... I think we’ve said enough, any action fan knows that Stallone or Schwarzenegger alone can not be defeated. Combine them together and it’s almost like two gods in a world of puny insect-like girly men.
Captain Phillips Action, Biography, Drama, Thriller. Director: Paul Greengrass. Writer: Billy Ray (screenplay), Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty (based upon the book “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea” by). Cast: Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman.
This is the true story about the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009 by a group of Somali pirates which was the first American cargo ship that suffered such a fate. You best believe the good ol’ USA ain’t giving up no ransom money. The movie sheds light on the ordeal that Maersk Alabama’s commanding officer Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks) and the antagonist – Muse (Barkhad Abdi), the pirate leader had undergone. The ensuing struggle all the way through the deadly conclusion at the hands of the US Navy. Paul Greengrass directed The Bourne Ultimatum, so if you enjoyed the way that film was shot and are open to historical inaccuracies, this film might be at the top of this week’s rundown.

his bright and breezy Mexican eatery was one of the first off the block in our growing list of Mexican favourites. While a whole rash of new Mexican restaurants have opened recently, Lacalaca has carved out a unique place in Seminyaks’ neighborhood dining scene. The rush of new vendors has taken everyone by surprise but Lacalaca are not fazed in the least, in fact they say its good for business. Like, Mexican is the new black? This colourful eatery distinguishes itself on lots of levels and remains a popular place to eat, drink and hang out. Run by the charming Will, the menu here strives for authenticity with numerous ingredients coming straight from the source. There is a whole range of home-made salsas that liven up the palette and range from hot, hot, hot to milder and even fruity versions. Don’t even get the g u y
started on chipotles and hot sauce… They offer a little Texmex, enough to make it comfortable for those folks who think Mexican is all border control. There’s also a good range of authentic south of the border flavoursome dishes including a tempting range of small bites for lunch. Pulled Pork Shoulder is heaven sent with a pineapple salsa, yum. Wrapped in pillowy freshly baked burritos overflowing with fresh salad, this is the business. Atun, seared tuna that melts in your mouth sits on a crisp corn shell and a mound of guacamole, dressed with chipotle mayonnaise, while Pollo Cacaheute is very hard to pronounce but fabulous to eat with spiced chicken served up to those who like a lively dance on the tongue. On our lunch menu we also indulged in the Carnitas, home-made meatballs made from pork and beef and dressed in a hot sauce worthy of a bandit.
“We opened Lacalaca and within six months a whole rash of other Mexican restaurants opened. It’s been great actually because people have a much better appreciation and its obviously the hot thing to eat right now,” says Will. Hot is right, although Lacalaca does the spicy and the mild and there’s always more hot sauce to go around for those who like to shed a tear or two. Crispy shells, fajitas, burritos and a whole lot more feature on this menu. While Will says he rejected the mainstream idea of Mexican food for a while, he realized that people like it, so they made an appearance and stayed. The food comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes and that’s part of their success, anytime is Lacalaca time. Party nights are legendary at Lacalaca as well. Bring on t h e D J s , pump up the volume and the bar goes wild with fabulous margaritas, mojitos, fruity concoctions and a whole range of top shelf tequilas guaranteed to send you to the moon. Sweet tooths are not forgotten either and lunch for us finished with some churros dipped into warm chocolate sauce, fabulous. A few icecold beers and we were done and dusted, off to tell more lies to whoever would listen. Lunch, dinner and drinks any time are always good at this little burst of colour on Jl Drupadi, just off Oberoi Road. The best thing about Lacalaca is that you can feel the love in the food and the drinks. This Mexican thing is obviously a passion for the boy from Australia who can’t help twirling his imaginary moustache. Laca Laca Jl. Dupadi 1, Seminyak T. 736733 www.lacalacabalicom www.beatmag.com

This cocktail might seem like something that you would give to your lady but it isn’t too sweet, and if you like strawberries, we recommend this beverage.

A couple of years ago, aspiring guitarist Dan Rothman was sitting in his student digs at Nottingham Uni busy trawling Facebook like all hardworking undergraduates do, when he came across the profile of Hannah Reid; blonde of hair, guitar in hand, looking like the perfect frontwoman for his new musical venture. Confirming that Facebook stalking is a perfectly constructive use of one’s time, Rothman promptly got in touch, and along with multi-instrumentalist Dot Major, London Grammar was born. After a few years of roughing it on the student union circuit, the band dropped their inaugural single – the magically slowburning “Hey Now” on YouTube. Less than a year later with 800,000 views and counting, plus a couple of teaser EPs in circulation, the trio were already bookies favourite for taking out this year’s coveted Mercury Prize. Not bad going by anyone’s standards - especially considering the ongoing oversaturation of ‘chillectronic’ music out there, but mainly because If You Wait hadn’t even been released by that point. So what exactly is it that separates this seemingly unremarkable bunch of stroppy middle-class music grads, who, on paper at least, look like all the other stroppy middle class music grads both past and present? A large chunk of the answer arrives at precisely 15 seconds into “Hey Now”, when Reid’s exquisite, classical soprano grabs you by the emotional jugular and wrestles it into submission. Imagine Florence Welch or Jesse Ware fronting The XX and you’d have some idea of what to expect. The effect is even more enhanced with such profound statements as “I will dream of you/you will dream of me too” (“Interlude”) and “I am the blank page before you/I am the fine idea you crave” (“Stay Awake”). Behind the heart-stopping vocals, Rothman and Major do a fine job of crafting a beautifully layered, rich soundscape of soft pianos, gentle synths and subdued percussion that is never in competition with the lyrics, giving Reid plenty of space to shine, and shine she does – perhaps best exemplified on the album’s mesmerizing centerpiece “Strong”, and the haunting “Flickers”. Usually at this point comes the ‘but’, and if pushed I’d have to admit there is room for improvement – much as you’d expect for a group still finding their feet amidst a no doubt overwhelming amount of hype. Still, top marks for a corking debut. Dan Ashcroft is brushing up on his grammar.
GIZMOS BERG Little Printer
In the midst of the ever-evolving digital world, one London-based design firm is bridging the gap between the ongoing battle of print versus digital publications. Aptly titled the “Little Printer,” Berg design collective introduces its latest device to capture tangible manifestations of often used social media and digital content from a smartphone. In a similar fashion to RSS reader platforms, the Little Printer app and hardware allows users to subscribe to various feeds, sources, publications and status updates, which can then be printed directly into a “mini-newspaper.” The Berg Little Printer is also announced alongside the creation of the Berg Cloud, a wireless feature that plugs the Little Printer into a broadband router allowing it to connect to a smartphone wirelessly. Rounding out the innovative project, the Berg Little Printer app’s cleanly skinned user interface and visuals are impressive enough to satiate even the most design-conscious techie. £169/$219.

Joining the Surface 2 is the powerful “Pro” version of the tablet – a design that features an Intel i5 processor, Windows 8.1, 512GB of flash storage (plus an additional 200GB of SkyDrive storage), a Pro Pen with “palm-blocking” technology, and more. GIZMOS Wacom Inkling Walcom has turned the world upside down for artists with the introduction of its Wacom Inkling pen. The “old school” workflow for artists meant those who worked in analog format prior to digitizing their work required a further scanning process. But now with the Inkling, you’re able to work digitally and analogously in the same step as the pen, and a sensor records all the necessary movements which can then be transferred to your computer. £84.95
Ricoh Theta Brings Spherical Photographs to the Masses The latest innovation to digital photography makes its way to the web today from Japanese firmRicoh. The handheld, lightweight, remotelike camera dubbed Theta allows its user to take full spherical photos in just one shot, whereas our mobile phone cameras require us to move our device slowly across an invisible plane. Once its shutter button is pressed, the Theta’s ultraslim twin-lens optical system snaps the view from around, above and below the device to create seamless panoramas. Instead of sporting its own display, every image taken is automatically sent to your smartphone or tablet to allow for edits and photo sharing. Associate director of Ricoh’s new business development center said of the Theta, “By encapsulating everything and everybody within a cohesive sphere in one simple shot, it will help users to perceive the interconnections that we all share.” This new wave in photo technology will be available for pre-order in France, Germany, UK and the USA starting this October. $399.95

SUDAKARA ART SPACE Now – Oct 28
S
udakara Art Space presents ‘Mythography: Now’; a group exhibition by six local artists that examines the cultural and historical stereotypes that have inhabited our lives and shaped the world and our humanity as we now know it. Through the series of the works, the audience is provoked to recall events, memories and moments they have experienced. The artists have drawn on surreal humour to create some sort of counter myth which triggers the audience to question the status quo of hegemonic ideologies, beliefs and concepts related to them. This unique exhibition through its confrontational and culturally dislocating works challenges both collective and individual myths of the contemporary world. A creative, thought provoking exhibition not to miss. Sudakara Art Space, 20 Jl Sudamala, Sanur.

M
ummy likes me to wear clothes, especially when we go to parties! For Independence Day I wore a red and white lace frock and matching bows in my hair that Uncle Chris made for me. I was the ‘belle of the ball’ and received lots of compliments and cuddles from all the people there. As we do a lot of traveling around Bali to visit friends, I also have a bikini outfit for swimming, which I am not very good at yet, it’s sort of a ‘doggie paddle’ style, and it makes people laugh which I like. I have a lot of human friends, but my best friend is Bogey. He is an extremely handsome golden retriever owned by my uncle Norman and I just love the way he pushes me around (literally)! We don’t see each other as much as I would like, but it’s up to mummy and daddy and we can only play together under strict supervision. I’m not quite sure why!
Today, Mummy and I watched a film on this box thing, I think it is called a television. It was about a dog called Hatchiko. I have to say, I didn’t really understand what was going on, but Mummy was crying at the end, and I guess it was because the two legged person in the movie loved the dog so much and when the man died, Hatchiko waited for ten years at the train station for him to come home. I really hate it when Mummy cries because I know she is in pain or sad and I am helpless and don’t know what to do. But, when Daddy comes home he makes her better. I wish I could understand more of what mummy and daddy say. I know certain words like ‘walkies’ or ‘jalan jalan’ and ‘treats’, and I know that I am a princess and a ‘baby girl’, and mostly that they love me very much. Sometimes, I wish I could speak to them too, and maybe, one day I will, but in the meantime I just look at them with love in my eyes and I am sure they know that it is mutual. I don’t think I mentioned that I have a ‘new best friend for ever’! Her name is Suci Manis and she is much younger than me, so my job is to take care of her and protect her, so I guess I am her sister. Daddy loves her an awful lot, so that makes her feel good, but I know, that Mummy prefers me as I am number one daughter. I am not jealous of Suci, as it is not in a poodles’ nature to behave rudely, but, sometimes she gets on my nerves, especially when there is a toy involved. Actually, most of the toys are mine, but of course I share them with Suci, unless there is a particular toy that I want to play with, and then I growl and snappy snarl at her to let it go, and normally she is very good and gives it back to me....[to be continued] [Tiffany]
