The sun is beating down so much lately with clear blue skies and a maybe a big fluffy white cloud here and there, and Bali once again is shining in its true climatic glory. All those typhoon hurricane experiences not long ago now seem a distant memory. The weather doesn’t get any better than this and since we are in the low-ish season it’s not bad on the beaches right now, with not so many people around either. That’s good for the punters but I suppose not so good for the business folk around the place. They tell me that from the beginning of May it’s starting to heat up in the tourism world with visitors starting to fill the hotels again so enjoy it while you can folks. Soon it’s getting busy! Well, once again there is a heap of stuff coming our way in the next two weeks. Just this weekend we have scratch king Grandmaster Flash down at Poco Loco in Legian, Patrick Oliver at Sky Garden, Maliq & D’Essentials at Hard Rock Café, a DJ set from Cassian at W, and a Dutch Touch at Karma Beach on Friday, then DJ Riri Mestica at Boshe, One Night in Kuta is back to Hu’u with DJ Sirdee on the decks, plus a 2nd edition of a Dutch Touch at Karma Beach on Saturday. Later in the week watch out for US band Vertical Horizon at HRC and international visiting DJs popping out of the woodwork all over town, and a few Cointreau gigs around Petitenget. It’s definitely a busy couple of weeks coming up and you can check for all the details inside. I enjoyed getting back on the radio last week doing the Drive show on 98.5fm. It had been about four months since the last show and with help from James Sullivan we once again went through a bunch of new and old tracks for the two hour slot. You can tune in Friday evenings from 6 – 8pm. There have been a few changes in recent months in The Beat Radio Plus programming in order to secure the radio station’s position in town and we’re hoping soon that we’ll be back to more of an EDM twist. It’s basically the same old chilled in the afternoons and edm in the evenings so make sure you tune right in for the best radio in town. I’ll be back on the show this Friday night with one of Bali’s most prominent rock‘n’rollers, Jerinx from Superman is Dead, to catch up with what’s going on in his life and in particular, what they’re going to do in London besides watch the Olympics this July. Tune into 98.5fm for more details.

Bag to Paradise Welovebali.org is a community movement consisting of individuals and companies answering the call for responsibility and sustainability in Bali. In short they are trying to make Bali a cleaner and healthier place through projects around the island. Last week they launched their latest project, BALI BAG’US which is aimed at reducing plastic waste in the environment by giving away free hessian shopping bags to anyone who signs up on their website. They claim that will stop the use of 5000 plastic bags a day on the island. Sounds good? Makes sense? Well, you’ll be able to sign up soon at www.welovebali. org. Log on to find out more.

So Cointreauversial! Cointreau will be setting up parties called “One Night in Bali” at numerous venues across the island from May to July. The theme for these events will be 1940s New York which is sure to bring out some urban retro looks for those bold enough to rock them. The soonest one is on May 3 at the Living Room and will feature Cinta Ramlan, Dj Glynn Tandy, and Nason. It will also feature an award for whoever looks most like Dita Von Teese. Subsequent events will be held at Mint, Hu’u Bar and The Beach Lounge.

www.beatmag.com

Hard Body, Hard Rock Everybody likes a hard body and this sedentary lifestyle of ours on this island can’t be helping us much. Well, we have good news and bad news. Bad news is that working out is always going to be an uphill battle of will versus sloth. The good news is, Hard Rock hotel is making it a little easier with their Body Rock gym membership which will allow you to use their facilities including their gym, steam room, sauna, whirlpool, plunge pool and the hotels main pool from 7am to 9pm. $400 USD (includes a one-hour massage). Valid through May.

Runner Lilan Kennedy Kiproo pushed it to the limit and won the BII Maybank Bali Marathon completing the 42.195 kilometer route through Gianyar, yesterday, with a record time of 02:16:54. He received a cash prize of US $20,000 awarded by the President Director of BII Dato Khairussaleh bin Ramli during the award ceremony held at Bali Safari and Marine Park. The BII Maybank Bali Marathon started at 5am, with the start and finish line at Bali Safari & Marine Park, and was joined by more than 2,000 professional runners and marathon fans. Categories of the race were the full marathon (42.195 kilometres), half marathon (21.0975 kilometres), and 10Â kilometre run. The community around Gianyar cheered the runners as they passed along the routes, which were certified by the International Measurement Certificate number INA2012/009, for full marathon, half marathon, and 10k from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) by International Measurement Administrator Dave Cundy, a Grade A IAAF-AIMS course measurer. Fire Safety 101 The 101 Legian is a little bit more prepared now in terms of their ability to manage a potentially catastrophic fire. It has recently trained its staff in firefighting techniques and increased their knowledge of what to do in the event of a fire erupting at the location. The 101 has a Gold Certification for security and safety from the Ministry Tourism Badung Region which is supported by the local police. So, rest assured if you’re at the 101.

If you have some kids with you, you might want to check out the newly opened Kids Water Fun Zone at Bali Dynasty resort on Jalan Kartika Plaza. The new area is adjacent to their 56-meter water slide and Kupu Kupu Kids club. The fun zone features a tipping bucket, water cannons, bubbler jets and hose jets. Boy I wish I was nine again, that sounds so awesome. Tel. 752403 www.dynastyresort.com

D’bagindas akasaka | wednesday 2 may

Roots:

D’Bagindas is a band from Malang East Java and consists of Bian (vocal), Mike (keyboard), Dandy (guitar) and Tile (guitar). The band was born when Tile became inspired listening to Mike’s own penned songs. They then invited Dandy to join, although they had to switch their overall sound from metal to Malayu pop. To complete the band, they unearth singer, Bian, who would supply the sweet sounding vocals.

Sounds:

Malayu pop

Where You Might Have Heard tHem:

D’Bagindas has received a lot of buzz within the Indo music scene and their first album called C.I.N.T.A. mixed some elements of dangdut, keroncong, blues, and country. The song ‘Apa Yang Terjadi’ was their first single and became extremely popular on the airwaves. Not all of the D’Bagindas’ songs are chilled out Malayu sounds, the song ‘Di mana Sumpahmu’ is very pop. After the success of their first single, they released a second called ‘Cinta’ with more subdued sounds.

www.beatmag.com

Why See them:

If you are into Malayu music, there’s no question that you will want to see this band live. D’Bagindas has their unique side, especially in their vocals which is uniquely Melayu. So, don’t miss their performance at Akasaka on May 2.

Morgan page sos supper club | wednesday 2 may Roots:

One of America’s dance music gems, Page has been making noise all over the underground world, as well as leaving his mark on the mainstream realm as well. Coming from the East Coast, now living in Los Angeles, Morgan Page has taken his own path to the high reaching success he enjoys today. He’s known as much for his own original productions and unique sound, as he is for creating massive remixes of internationally known pop songs.

Sounds:

Progressive House, Electro House.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

www.beatmag.com

This is one of the few artists in which one can say that your chances of having already heard his music stretch into many far corners. He has over 130 remixes to his credit, retouching the music likes of Katy Perry, Madonna, Nelly Furtado and the list goes on. Although he has quite the knack for remixing big time pop tracks with a great underground progressive house feel, he has also produced some massive tracks of his own which plenty of us have heard right here in Indonesia. The latest from this year being “Body Work”, as well as the massive 2009 floor filler “The Longest Road”. A track also remixed by Deadmau5 which nabbed a Grammy nod.

Why See Him:

Massive talent, and someone only getting bigger and better. His body of work in the studio, and out of it, has only grown over recent years. His musical taste is diverse, but unique. If you know his music and his productions, you know he is a master of groove and moods and he’s sure to put on a solid performance with a night out that you’ll appreciate, and remember.

cinta ramlan the living room | thursday 3 may

Roots:

Cinta Ramlan started her singing career in 2004. Being surrounded by her celebrity and socialite family didn’t make the lady, who’s sister is a famous model and presenter, take a shortcut to the big time. She’s worked hard to achieve her success and with her good looks and talent, it wasn’t long before she made her name in Indonesia’s music scene.

Sounds:

Pop, R&B, dance.

Where You Might Have Heard her:

She recorded her first single and quickly got invited to perform with many DJs such as Winky, Innerlight and Kent Kryptonite on the stage. After that, she finally chose dance music and began to write her own music. Cinta later moved to Bali where she met DJ Echa and they created “The Lovebug Project” which is their collaboration in making funky, groovy melodic house music. They record their tunes and perform them together live.

Why See her:

This rebel lady is more than just good looks because her unique voice and powerful lyric are also on the money. That’s why her performance is never a disappointment. So if you want to see it for yourself, don’t miss her show at the Cointreau special event titled ‘One Night in Bali’ at The Living Room on May 3.

Vertical HorizoN HARD ROCK CAFE | THURSday 3 may

Roots:

The band was formed in 1991 by a couple of students at Georgetown University by the name of Matthew Scannell and Keith Kane. During their college days, the band would play cover songs in the campus’ food court. After graduating, they moved to Boston and self released their first album, There and Back Again, in 1992. Vertical Horizon soon began touring and picked two more members becoming a four-piece band. They released three albums during the early days which sold 70,000 units combined.

Sounds:

Post grunge alternative rock.

Where You Might Have Heard THEm:

www.beatmag.com

The band shot to superstardom after a string of hits in their first major label album, Everything You Want. The eponymous track on the album became the 34th most played song on American radio in 2000. “You’re a God” was also an instant hit and was featured in the film Bruce Almighty and was additionally the 12th most played song on US radio stations. Perhaps their greatest single (in the mind of this writer) was “The Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)”. The album was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Their future albums, Go and Burning Days also fared well, but were not on par with the wildly successful Everything You Want.

Why See THEm:

If you were alive in the early 2000s and you didn’t live in a cave, you’ve heard their songs before. If not, go to beatmag.com to hear them. They were a seminal band in those days and although their success peaked with one album, those hits are pure ear candy and their show at the Hard Rock is sure to be nostalgic for anyone who enjoys alternative rock.

dj yukon rooftop @ the 1o1 legian | friday 4 may Roots:

Another 99er’ as some would say, Ashley Hollibone(Dj Yukon) entered the global dance music scene right as things were truly starting to heat up (1999). Coming from Sydney, Yukon has seen his share of changes in music over the years and continued to ride the wave and remains one of Australia’s better progressive house DJs. Inspired by such greats as Sasha, Dave Seaman, as well as Jaytech, you can hear such powerful influences in his music. One which pays tribute to multiple genres, and touches a wide range of sound.

Sounds:

Progressive House, Tech House, Trance, Chillout.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

A residency at Sydney’s ‘SweetChilli’ saw him playing alongside the likes of Chris Fortier, Steve Porter, Luke Fair and the great Anthony Pappa. A very successful monthly by the name of ‘Good Company’ which has been going two years strong, as well as his own underground club ‘Le Clan’. Yukon has already thrown it down in Bali, as well as touched down in Russia and Germany.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him:

His mixes and productions give a strong impression that he has a lot of range in what he can play and where he can go. Classically trained, he knows great music and has a wealth of experience delivering it. You don’t get invited back to Bali unless you’re bringing something special to the clubs and nightlife here, and putting down a solid vibe for people to dance the night away. See ya there...

Dean Jon hu’u | saturday 12 may

Roots:

Yet another talent putting South London’s dance music scene on the map, Dean Jon’s roots in the UK underground emulate that of his far stretching reaches in multiple genres. Not only a DJ and gifted producer with electronic tastes spanning the music spectrum, he also owns and has created his own record label ‘Lifted Recordings’. From back in the day raves and radio stations, to “10 thousand plus” massives’ Dean Jon must be doing something right… right?

Sounds:

Techno, Deep House, Tribal, Nu Disco, Breaks, Jackin, Latin, You Name It.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

www.beatmag.com

Aside from his own DJ performances around the globe, and recent tours of Singapore, Japan, and Bali… Dean is also one half of the up and coming ‘Dirty London’ production duo. As if this doesn’t keep him busy enough, he also sees that his Lifted Recordings label hosts successful events, with over 200 to date. He holds down a residency at Avalanche in Ibiza, which by the way, decided to be gracious enough to provide us all with one of Dean’s great mixes on Soundcloud. Check it out.

Why See Him:

With a resume of great length and a serious body of work, it’s no doubt that this artist is passionate not only about DJing and playing out, but doing everything he can to help fuel the movement of this music. He’s built a strong following and gained a lot of respect in his time doing such, so your chances of getting a great show from him are right where any party goer would want them to be!

alex m.o.r.p.h. deejay club | saturday 12 may

Roots:

Alex M.O.R.P.H. was once known as Alexander Mieling, but that was a different life. The German DJ got his stage name from a song “Amorphous” and to represent the changing of his appearance and music over time. The periods after each letter are purely for aesthetic reasons. He used to work on projects such as MORPH , Arc in the Sky , Ohm Boys and Scirocco but now uses the Alex M.O.R.P.H. exclusively.

Sounds:

Melodic trance, tech

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

www.beatmag.com

Alex M.O.R.P.H. is a German dance heavyweight that has made numerous albums including Klangwelt, Maximum Overdrive, Consequence and Creatures. In 2003, the Fenology label was founded which focused purely on trance music and Alex released his most successful singles with them which includes “Flaming Clouds”, “Unification” and “New Harvest”. He’s made hundreds of remixes for artists such as Ayumi Hamasaki , Paul van Dyk and Faithless. He also teamed up with Rank 1 to produce Life Less Ordinary which was met with breakthrough success.

Why See Him:

If you’re a big trance fan, this is one DJ you’ll surely enjoy. Alex’s melodic brand of trance has been described as impulsive and energetic. Deejays is also one of those venues that’s perfect for this particular brand of music so head over to Kuta for this one.

arma beach does what they do best, beach parties! This particular one was called the Late Show and presented the King of Tomorrow AKA Sandy Rivera. It was a very jolly night with a warm breeze punctuated with appropriate beats. Seems like Karma is the place to go for that midweek party with a healthy crowd getting sand between their toes. Or sandless high heels on the deck.

otak, the Indonesian rock band that seems to be so popular today, has a unique side that makes them loved by the fans, Tantri’s dynamic vocals and their sentimental rock songs. Akasaka invited them back because it seemed like there were still a bunch of “Kerabat Kotak”, their fans, who just needed another fix. The fans wore Kotak t-shirts and were singing and jumping around along to the music in a frenzy of bodies. All the audience, young and old had a blast. It ended around two in the morning, a late night, but a great show.

Celebrity Bartender in da house

I

t was a special night at Cubana with a special bartender, Manabu Ohtake from Japan and who recently became the Diageo Global World Class Champion bartender, mixing all sorts of special cocktails for the special guests in attendance. The crowd was jumping, most likely due to the catchy Latin tunes that Cubana is known for. Extremely talented salsa dancers were on hand to entertain and dance with a few lucky folk in the crowd. What a well rounded party indeed.

It was all soul, hip hop and Rnb on Friday night and for those lucky enough to be there, it was awesome. The body moving beats by DJ Mikey Moran and DJ DJ turned the dancefloor into a sea of bodies which of course is customary at Huu bar.

When the German DJ finally started to play his music, the crowd burst into cheer. The punters congregated in front of the DJ booth and pumped the air with hands raised while grooving out to the German beats. It was a truly magic night full with the classy folk for which Mint is now so well known.

his was the second time for the young dangdut singer, Ayu Ting Ting to perform at Akasaka. The venue was packed with fans and although it wasn’t quite as crowded as her first concert the young lady still knocked ‘em dead. Taking the theme “Sik Asik Concert”, which is also the title of her new hit single, which you might have even noticed as a jingle for a TV commercial. She finally performed that long awaited song right after midnight and she looked stunning. Besides Ting Ting, there was also a female DJ who played various tracks, from house music to Indonesian song remixes. The event was a great success with most of the crowd dancing and singing along with the songs.

DJ Pena started his performance at around midnight and the few people that made it out that night seemed to dance freely without a single care in the world. nother famous Australian DJ, Nukewood came to Bali to pump up the Sky Dome on the Friday night. When the time showed exactly midnight, the crowd wasn’t massive but one by one the place filled to capacity. Besides the great sounds, the sexy dancers lit up the DJ booth and danced all night long leaving most people in the house short breathed. Another cracking night at the Dome.

It was on 4/20 when the mellow folk at Eikon swayed to the sound of reggae rather than your typically fast club beats. As usual, the entire venue was full, especially in the back area where the atmosphere was way more chilled out when compared to the harsh realities of daily life. Three Little Birds played in the back too and everyone seemed to be a little elevated by the Friday 4/20 atmosphere.

Placed on the top floor with a view of the crowded Kuta streets below, the 101 provided a great atmosphere. The event was on from 7 to 10pm with music from the 101’s home Top40 band. It was a pleasant evening for those who came to the Rooftop and they all enjoyed the bird’s eye view of Kuta below.

The Gorillaz’s Last Stand

e

veryone knows Gorillaz. If you don’t know who they are, it’s likely that you were raised by timberwolves in some Siberian wasteland and should this scenario be true, you should definitely youtube them right now. The fictional cartoon band has produced some of the catchiest tracks of alternative rock and hip-hop this generation has ever seen, and this might be the last time you’ll get to see them. Well, thank goodness Urbanite Asia is organizing Embassy Club’s Playground Festival, the most celebrated dance/indie music festival in Indonesia every year for the past four years in Jakarta and for the first time ever in Bali in conjunction with Brewers Production. Yes, they’re bringing over none other than Gorillaz Sound System, a state-of-the-art audio-visual four-man outfit incorporating all the hugely successful Gorillaz hits coupled with outsized

projections of their award winning animation. Gorillaz Sound System consists of a DJ, a percussionist, a drummer and a visual director. The whole concept of the virtual band revolves around a fictional animated universe which will be displayed on huge screens and gigantic natural limestones at what is inarguably one of the most epic venues Bali has to offer, Garuda Wisnu Kencana. This could be the final show where you’ll see 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodles, and Russel Hobbs together live as there’s been talk of killing off the characters. Gorillaz Sound System will showcase the work of the folks responsible for the creation of the audio and visual of this virtual band. Seeing giant projections of what is considered to be one of the most iconic band of the 2000s, will be a visual and auditory feast (which will be the biggest in Bali… ever) and you definitely will not want to

If that wasn’t enough to get you to stop reading this article and make a beeline to the nearest ticket counter, Grammynominated songstress Kelis will also dominate the Dimensions supported Playground Festival stage. You’ve definitely heard her single “Milkshake” which brought a lot of boys to the yard. She has since departed from her RnB inspired roots and has embarked on a more electro synth pop musical journey that has gotten her critical acclaim through hits such as “Acapella” and most recently “Bounce”, making her performance extremely dance friendly. To top it all off, the event will also feature a Silent Disco area where 500 wireless headphones will be distributed with selector switches to three different DJs playing simultaneously. The headphones will feature three different light colors indicating which DJ you and your buddies are listening to. They’ll be a plethora of DJs

Additionally, other top DJs will also be performing including the breakbeat mastery of James Zabiela, George Fitzgerald’s electronica, Marc Roberts’ eclectic style and our local favorites: Mahesa Utara and Trigg*r Production’s DJ Mikey Moran and Stan. If you want more of Dimensions Playground Festival than Bali can provide, then check out the Jakarta event which will feature all of the headliners above with additional live sets from Indie heroes Saint Etienne and Van She, Techno legend Danny Howells, as well as local heroes Agrikulture, BRNDLS, Alexa, Sir Dandy, Anton Wirjono, Winky, Jerome, and Jakarta Techno Militia among many others on May 5th. This spectacular state-of-the-art show will play live and loud in GWK Bali on May 9th from 5pm onwards. We highly recommend that you head down to the designated ticket boxes nearest to you and score some tickets to the event before it sells out. VIP tables of eight, which includes three complimentary bottles, are on sale for Rp 10 million and general presale tickets will run you an affordable Rp 360k. HOUSE FOR RENT

The Guide To Renting A House in Bali

The house owners have got it all sown up it seems when it comes to protecting their property rights, and that seems fair; why sell your land when you can rent it for almost the same price and then get it back, often with a fab villa on it? When it comes to renting, they have a unique approach that is as foreign to most of us as eating a roast pig that has sat in the sun all day.

So here are a few tips for the house hunter.

1

Do drive around endlessly looking down gangs you never noticed before and ask people if there are houses for rent. Expect to get a slack jawed response or a helpful person who will show you lots for a good commission. Beware, they aren’t real estate agents, they’re locals with friends who have friends who have friends.

2

Don’t expect the house will be livable. If you are looking on a budget then you can expect leaking roofs, dodgy electrics and possibly a couple of rabid dogs you are expected to live with, they’re the security. In some cases you will be expected to fix everything yourself.

3

Once you have agreed on a price don’t be surprised if it changes. The landlord knows you are interested enough to ask and go through the lengthy negotiation process, so you’re fair game. Don’t lose your cool because that is very uncool. You can try to brave it out through this process but don’t expect the house to last long, as if its cheap enough to live in, someone else will want it.

4

089

f e a t u r e

R

enting is somewhat different in Bali where, if real estate agents and landlords are to be believed, people are clawing at each other to fight it out for the best properties, often regardless of the price.

Once you have agreed on the price don’t be dismayed to find out that you are expected to come up with ten or twenty years rent in advance. Sometimes this occurs. And they’d prefer it in cash, that day. But everything is negotiable, just check the details.

5

Fully expect construction to begin next door the day after you signed the contract. Even living in a tiny gang will not protect you from the construction bug, the tiniest space is now worthy of development – and apparently day and night.

6

Don’t be surprised after you move in to find that the electricity connection and water supply is via a neighbouring house. Your neighbor will soon realize someone else is using their electricity and water and shut it down.

7

Expect a long wait before additional phone lines and cable TV connections are available in your area. This isn’t the landlord’s problem, its yours.

So what protection can you expect once you have rented the house? Very little sometimes, renting is a little like closing your eyes and going on a walk, anything can happen. However, not all landlords are the same so check the details before you sign.

It seems though that as fraught with difficulties as it is, how many suitcases of cash you are expected to deliver and how little assistance you get when you have moved in, people are still doing it. According to the landlords they are falling from the trees. New settlers and old time expats are still investing enthusiastically in their Balinese lifestyles and the price and length of contract continues to rise. In twenty years time, having been a fully paid up member of the family, investing heavily to build a beautiful home on a formerly empty block of land, you may find, like many others that the new price is way out of your reach. Oh well, that’s life, says the happy landlord. Oh, and thanks for the house. [Sarah Dee]

One of the most successful local restaurateurs in Bali, Gusky started his love affair with food at a young age. He now owns five restaurants and a catering company with his wife and makes sure that he always serves the freshest vegetables from his own farm. Thanks to Gusky, who was one of the Balinese pioneers in developing local food, Indonesian cuisine has been elevated from warung fare to restaurant delicacy. You began being interested in food at an early age, how did that come about? Yes, my interest in food began in childhood. I grew up in both Denpasar and Mas, Ubud, and there was a time in Denpasar when food was a rare item for my family, but when we were in Ubud, we used to go to the rice field or river to get our food and vegetables for the day. When I was in high school, SMA 3 Denpasar, and college, Udayana University majoring in economics, one of the things I did was supply five-star hotels in the Sanur area with bebek tutu (smoked duck) and babi guling (suckling pig) for their buffet dinners. So from that experience, I grew up to appreciate and love food from an early age. My love affair with food got deeper when I met my wife Karen who also loves food as much as I do. Now, as we all know, she is the chef behind all our Bali Good Food (BGF) restaurants and catering company.

After that, I realized that I am not suited for that kind of lifestyle and I knew there were a lot of other things that I can do that suit me better. The night life was just not me at all. So, when someone came and wanted to buy it from me, I gladly sold it.

How did you first get involved in the culinary world? When I lived in California, we used to cater for small parties on our terms, meaning we only took a job if we had the time to do it. At that time in California, I had an import/export and a contracting company, so there wasn’t much time to do catering. I got involved in restaurants in 1997 when we started Kafe Batan Waru in Ubud. We opened it because we wanted to have a place to hang out for us and our friends. When I told my friends that I wanted to open an Indonesian restaurant, most of them did not believe me because at the time Indonesian food was only served in small warungs. Needless to say, Batan Waru was a success and gave me the idea to open Terazo restaurant.

How do you find the food industry in Bali and in Indonesia? Do you have enough support from the government? The food industry in Bali is growing fast and getting very competitive. The quality is getting better and we now are spoiled by the amount of choice we have. Regarding the support from the government, well... I think it’s ok!

www.beatmag.com

How many restaurants do you now own? We have five restaurants and a catering company. The restaurants are Kafe Batan Waru, both Kuta and Ubud, Terazo, Siam Sally, Cinta Grill and Inn, and BGF catering. I was a big fan of the now defunct Fuel Bar and Restaurant. It was totally chic, gave a glam nuance, and smoothed out the rough edges of Kuta-Legian. But it didn’t seem to work out. What happened? It went well for a while, until the gang fights erupted.

Do you plan to expand, say, opening a restaurant in Jakarta? When it comes to expanding, I am one of those people that never plans. I just go with the flow. When a good opportunity comes, then I take it. I keep things in my life quite simple. I like to use the KISS concept (Keep It Simple Stupid, haha). As it is, our farmers are quite busy up in the mountain with our farms producing organic vegetables for all the BGF restaurants and the catering company. We want to serve fresh and healthy food from our farms to all our customers.

Now let’s get personal, name three of your alltime favourite records and why? When it comes to music, I love any kind of music, that’s because I used to play in a band. But the ones that I still love to listen to and bring back memories are The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and David Bowie . Three of your all-time favourite books and why? I like books that contains philosophy like Tao Te Ching, The Art of War and I also like poetry by E.E. Cummings. Last Nagging words? Nope. I am not a nag and I don’t want to start now hehe...

Andre Anwar wins Rip Curl GromSearch at Lakey Peak, Sumbawa

In

a stunning display of big-wave power surfing well beyond his years, young Andre Anwar won the second stop of the 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch Southeast Asia Series in perfect 4-to-6-foot waves at world-famous Lakey Peak, Sumbawa. For Andre, who is only 13 years old but has been competing in the Under16 division of GromSeach since he was nine, his first-ever GromSearch victory was a big relief. “I was telling everyone that this year I was going to win,” said Andre, after being soaked with Coca-Cola by his friends on the winner’s podium. “I knew after the final that I was either second or first. When they told me I won I was so happy.”

In the Under-14 Final it was Irfan J. who finally got to taste victory at the Lakey Peak GromSearch after finishing in third place last year and fourth place the year before. Second place finisher Sah J. charged valiantly, but couldn’t rack up scores quite as high as Irfan’s. In third place was Andre Anwar’s cousin Ompu Anwar, 11, and in fourth place was Agus Salim, 13. Winners Andre and Irfan each received a brand new DHD surfboard from Rip Curl, which they will no doubt use to further their tube riding skills out at big Lakey Peak.

Andre was the form surfer throughout the daylong event, surfing with reckless abandon and showing no fear in waves that were easily double and triple overhead for the groms.

In the Expression Session, Gazlin Hamzah earned the Skullcandy Best Trick award for his massive air reverse and Mansur Ramlin took home the Skullcandy Best Wave award.

“Right from his first wave of the final you could see how hungry he was,” head judge Mark Clift said. “Andre was surfing faster than everyone else by a fair bit. He was going flat-out on every turn.”

“Everybody was charging so hard,” said event judge and Rip Curl team rider Pepen Hendrik. “It looked like Pipeline for the groms out there today.”

In the Under-16 Final, Andre ran up against an on-fire Bomar Arya Prasetia, 15, who was surfing in his first GromSearch Final. “Pretty much everyone in the two finals saved their best for last,” Clift said. “They were showing us stuff in the finals we hadn’t seen before all day.”

Fight Drugs, Aliens, and the Devil!

By: @JohanJT

Fighting evil things can be done in a lot of ways. In these movies, you’ll see good vs evil in a comedy, action and horror flick. Join some hilarious undercover policemen in their mission to investigate a drug ring in high school, get tense with the navy battling an alien war ship across the sea, and get rid of the demons possessing your loved one.

21 Jump Street Action & Adventure, Comedy. Directors: Phil Lord, Chris Miller. Writers: Michael Bacall, Jonah Hill. Cast: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis. Pair comedians Jonah Hill and the hunky Channing Tatum as young policemen assigned to an undercover unit infiltrating a drug ring in high school and you’ll definitely get some fun action scenes and hilarious lines! An homage to the famous 80s TV series “21 Jump Street”, this modern version/remake from the guy who wrote “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” may be one hell of a ride. Bring your cool book bag, put on your funky sneakers and wear your high-school uniform to get in character for your undercover assignment!

Battleship Action, Sci-Fi. Director: Peter Berg. Writers: Erich Hoeber, Jon Hoeber. Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Jesse Plemons. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval board game, Battleship is a story about an international fleet of ships that come across an alien armada during their naval war game exercises. The encounter soon turns into an intense battle over sea, land and air. It’s a colossal battle, it’s cool in its special effect riddled visuals, it’s tense, and it’s full of sexy cast members both male and female. Fasten the seat belt and all hands on deck!

The Devil Inside Horror. Director: William Brent Bell. Writers: William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman. Cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Danny Trejo, Suzan Crowley. Is it another exorcism-themed movie or is it not? “The Devil Inside” tells the story of when Isabella becomes involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, Maria, who allegedly murdered three people during her own exorcism 20 years before. “Many have been possessed by one; only one has been possessed by many at once.” That’s exactly the horror you’ll encounter here. You better put on a Rosario, prepare holy water in your tumbler, and perhaps you’ll find some security in the theater.

The Harrow and the Harvest

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

It’s often said that the best musicians live in their own worlds, so with that in mind, it would be safe to say that New York-born country chanteuse Gillian Welch and fingerpickin’ sidekick extraordinaire David Rawlins are probably sitting on some Mississippi porch rocking chairs right now, in a scene straight out of the Coen Borthers’ classic O Brother, Where Art Thou? Sticking resolutely to the formula that has made them country pin-ups since 1996’s Revival, The Harrow and the Harvest gently drifts through bluegrass, folk and country blues as easily as the wind through the pines, with only the effortlessly sparse alto of Welch’s backwoods holler and two guitars doing all the work. On the surface it’s the kind of stuff you’d expect to hear spilling out of the Waltons’ gramophone just after church on a Sunday, but the melancholy harmonies and surprisingly dark lyrics soon conjure up a laudanum-soaked world of sepia-tinted memories and dustbowl vignettes. Some girls are as bright as the morning/and some are blessed with a dark turn of mind coos, Welch, with a kind of maudlin vocals, leave you in no doubt as to which camp she falls into. They threw me out of Sunday school when I was nine she then confesses on “Tennessee” – not quite up there with Amy Winehouse just yet I grant you, but doubtlessly already on the slippery slope to a life of whiskey drinkin’ and gambling vices amidst a world of god fearin’, clean livin’ folks. There are moments of cautious upbeat optimism such as the banjo-driven “Six White Horses”, but it’s the more sinister tracks that really affect, like album opener “Scarlett Town” and wistful ditty “The Way it Will Be”. However, despite the doom and gloom the overall impact of The Harrow and the Harvest is of uplifting nostalgia for a bygone age of Americana that seems increasingly distant, so pull up a chair on the porch and prepare to get engrossed. This is the device that automatically churns authentic Italian gelato. Unlike ice cream makers that churn at higher speeds, the gelato maker’s paddle rotates at a much slower pace to produce a creamier, more intensely flavored frozen treat that is favored in Italy. Designed in Italy, the gelato maker has a self-refrigerating compressor that automatically chills the mixing bowl to the ideal temperature and allows you to make consecutive 1.5-pint batches without having to prime the mixing bowl in a freezer. The hermetically sealed lid keeps ingredients at the optimal temperature and prevents excess air from being whipped into the mixture, producing thick, smooth gelato. The patented mixing paddle thoroughly incorporates fruit, chocolate, and other flavorings and the stainless steel mixing bowl removes for easy serving. Paddle, mixing bowl, and lid are dishwasher safe. www.hammacher.com $299.95

Keypad Hidden Time Watch We have a love/ hate relationship with the 10-key pad. On the one hand, we used it to frolic through the cities and dungeons of Azeroth. Some of us were Alliance, some of us were FOR THE HORDE! but all of us set up our keyboards to optimally play our chosen class. On the other hand, there was that data entry temp job we had in college that made our eyes bleed. Let’s embrace the positive side of 10-key! This quirky watch is a conversation starter: it looks like a tiny 10-key number pad on your wrist. People will say, “What time is it?” and you can show them your watch and let them look perplexed. In truth, reading the time is easy: push any of the number keys and the time will light up, one digit at a time. This watch comes in classic keyboard ivory or black. We assume the black must be faster. www.thinkgeek.com $99.99

A mix of bucolic rural life and the petrol-powered chaos of Bali traffic, and since it has been seven years since they walked and watched the island and all she has to offer, there was no shortage on material for them to find. What once were dirt roads with minimal traffic in Bali is now a “Cluster F--k” of black smoke, puffing vehicular hornet nest of two and four wheel creatures. They collaborated on the large drawings in this exhibition inspired by the images seen on their time in Bali and Sandow being the go getter that he is has also done a selection of smaller pieces depicting his views and thoughts on “The Motorbike World of Bali”. Despite the Titanic, ship cruises are now more popular than ever

f e a t u r e

0141

The disaster in 1912, in which just over 1,500 people lost their lives, was of such epic proportions that the proper noun “Titanic” entered into our vocabularies as an adjective in its own right. Described originally as the vessel that couldn’t sink, Titanic was hailed, at the time of her launch, as the largest moving manmade object ever created. People have surprisingly short memories, though. Before the era of mass air travel, ocean liners were the main means of inter-continental travel and most visitors to Indonesia would have arrived by ship at Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, or Singaraja, North Bali. From the 1960s, when air travel started to become cheap enough to cater for the mass market, the ocean liner business went into a long, slow decline. It reappeared as the cruise ship industry in the 1980s, with vessels built much larger and designed for comfort rather than sheer speed. Pleasure cruising is now a major component of the tourist industry worldwide, with business estimated to be worth almost $20 billion and 19 million passengers carried in 2011. Modern cruise ships resemble five-star hotels: As many of the cabins as possible have portholes while passengers expect to be able to enjoy facilities, apart from top-quality restaurants, that include most – if not all – of the following: designer-label shopping malls, cinemas, theaters,

swimming pools, fitness centres, busines centres, spas, nightclubs and casinos. The amount of food consumed on cruise ships is mind-blowing: The weekly consumption by passengers and crew on Royal Caribbean International ship Mariner of the Seas is 9,000 kg of beef, 28,000 eggs, 30,000 litres of ice cream and 18,000 slices of pizza. That doesn’t include prodigious quantities of luxury foodstuffs like champagne, fine wines and spirits, caviar and cigars. One of the factors driving the increased demand for cruising is the changing world demographic: Quite simply, there are more elderly and retired people around and many of them are opting for a cruise as a vacation. This is already starting to become noticeable in Bali and adjacent islands as many ships now stop there as part of a Southeast Asian cruise. Two recent incidents involving ships operated by Costa Cruises, one of the world’s largest companies of its type, illustrate how popular cruising has become, for both were modern vessels. At the end of February 2012, Costa Allegra ran adrift in the Indian Ocean after she was immobiised by an engine-room fire. Only six weeks earlier, Costa Concordia, launched in 2005 as the largest Italian ship ever built, capsized off the Italian coast after she struck a rock. Of the 4,250 or so people aboard 30 are known to have died, with 60 injured. Just like Titanic 100 years before, the Concordia disaster showed that even a modern ship can still sink if holed badly enough below the waterline. Industry analysts reckon that the two Costa incidents will not have a long-term detrimental impact on the popularity of cruising. Expect to see more ships calling on Bali and Jakarta in coming years. Y

ou’ve probably had enough already of all the Titanic commemorations: The 100th anniversary of the vessel’s sinking on her maiden voyage has just been celebrated widely while the 1997 Hollywood movie, which won 11 Oscars, has been re-released in 3D. The original was one of the great weepies of all time.

Suri Sabbath and

Mothology

Originally a quartet, the group was formed in Jakarta in 2008. They started getting attention from the rock scenesters via their promo-demo Tiga Puluh in 2009. Followed in 2010 by a split album with Serigala Jahanam, Gurun Nestapa, released by Yes No Wave label and then self-released Kisah Kasih Lokalisasi EP which opened the door to a bigger audience. Listen and look very closely at what they are up to via myspace.com/ suritheband and Twitter @_SURI_.

If psychedelia, heavy blues, and Black Sabbath are your tunes of choice, then Suri will make you feel right at home. A few weeks ago they released their first fulllength album titled, Mothology. Compared to their previous albums, this new record is stronger in character, mature, rawer, and a lot more stoned stoner rock. The presence of a jazz virtuoso, Riza Arshad, who did the mixing and mastering also created a better, heavier sound.
