’ve never seen such an erratic wet season as this past one. It seemed like it was all over before it had really started a month ago and then hit with a vengeance in the past few weeks, catching a lot of people and businesses out, with some massive downpours that gave true meaning to the words monsoon rains. Parts of the experience you have to love but other parts do get in the way when one’s trying to get home or out in the evening. We did need a bit more rain, though, but that’s already enough thanks, boss. In the last week we saw a number of great shows and minor fiascos; tune into the ThereThen section for all the details and if you are looking for the right place to go tonight or any other night over the next two weeks, you know where to go – the HereNow and What’s On sections inside.

The Beat Magazine is Bali and Jakarta’s entertainment gig-guide. Pick it up free at the airport, bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels and Circle K in Bali. We are an independent publication and our aim is to entertain and guide you thru the nightlife and more of Bali and Jakarta.

My comment about the beat mag : The coolest local magazine ever, as I’m new to Bali, I can get a lot of information about what, where & when is the right time to hang out, party, enjoy sunset, etc. It’s very up to date! Now I know where I will be going to have a lot of fun!! The Beat kecil ukurannya besar khasiatnya!!! Nana….. We enjoy having fans like you too, Nana. Well aku suka bagian informasi soal acara2 di semua club or cafe and info soal feature artist, new place to chillnya lengkap ama menu and harga.. (Walaupun cuma sepintas) tapi uda cukup ngebuat pengen nyicip Tapi the beat mnurut aku ada kurangnya di bagian fashion or shoppin’ soalnya yang di feature hanya beberapa dress or pasang baju jadi menurut aku kurang lengkap mungkin dengan nambah sedikit akan lebih menarik that’s all. Thx for asking and hope the beat would be better from year after years! Tanika We do our humble best to make everyone happy and keep them informed and yes, we’ll have to do a better job of the fashion pages in future. Thank you for your comments.

c. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemi You’ve certainly managed to build an electronic empire of allsorts for yourself. From Djing and promoting to remixing and producing, you obviously take music more seriously than many easy spinners out there. Was music ingrained into your growth as a child? Any experience with instruments or orchestration prior to the electronic world? I was surrounded by pop music and some early hip hop when I was very young. I was heavily into breakdance and hip hop culture as well and in the early 80's, new wave artists like the Human League and Spandau Ballet. I’ve never had any musical training (sadly) but I do have some sort of ear for harmonics. There are plenty of people out there giving reflections on your sounds or reviews on your releases; how would you define your own sound?

sent me. I tested them out together and they seemed to work together well. I asked Derrick if I could use it, he was more than happy, and after some editing the track came to life. It ended up being called one of the best tracks of 2009 in DMC Update magazine. Is there a particular moment you look back on where a turning point allowed you to take your career in music to the next level? It’s a cliché but every day I am striving to find another moment to progress. Some moments stand out, like my first gig at Pacha for Renaissance, my Radio One residency, all my gigs at Space Ibiza for Coxy, Circus being made UK club of the year, getting signed to Cocoon, Radio One’s 500th Essential Mix party at Circus this weekend; it’s all madness but it’s all down to hard work and determination.

My sound is influenced from music in general, from pop to hard techno, hip hop to classical. My sound as a DJ is house and techno, good quality, good energy, sitting in the realms of the underground but bright enough for the big main rooms. You released your first full length album ‘A Collection of Scars & Situations’ last year; how long was this in the making? Does it contain a collection of ideas you’ve been playing with over the course of your career or more of a project that took shape in the studio as you were recording it? It was never a planned project. I'd been working on many tracks and realized I had about 20 or so tracks made and some were far from house or techno. I was developing as a producer and an artist with tracks like ‘A Moment of Clarity" and ‘Birthday Thoughts’. As I wanted the world to know I was a capable producer I decided to release my album on my own label, it did very well too! Tell us about your collaboration with Derrick Carter on the track ‘Legacy’; how did you first come to start knowing and working with Derrick? I’ve been a fan of Derrick’s for many years. He played Circus' first birthday and we have been friends ever since. When I made the backing track I was really happy with it and then I stumbled across a vocal Derrick had

“I

Not until after he landed in Syria was DJ Yousef informed of the historical status he was about to achieve by stepping behind the decks in its Damascus nightclub, Jet Set. He shares his story with The Beat…

’m the what...?” I say loudly, to the local promoter I’ve just met at the airport. I’ve just been swept quickly through customs in VIP style, and now the sentiment settles in; Yousef will be Syria’s first international DJ. It’s quite a shock (almost to the point where I could

062 | beatmag.com

justify referring to myself in the third person) and although I was aware of the political situation here, and Syria’s traditions, I didn’t comprehend its distinct lack of international talent gracing the land. As far as I know, it’s the only Arab state to retain this policy, and in a planet that all too frequently seems to have shown a tremendous

nous for throwing dance music in the most unlikely of situations, I’m surprised somewhere still exists untouched by the all enveloping reach of rave. The news also fills me with a feeling poised midway between exhilaration and stress. Stereotypical images of a politically torn country ravaging any hopes of a rave flood my mind, whilst I ponder an image of a club based on an amalgamation of “that scene in Blade” and “5am at a mosque” – fear and excitement swiftly follow. I wake 5 hours later after a reasonable sleep and try to get online, which I do. I make a proud announcement that tonight I’m to be the first international DJ to play in Syria. I hit Facebook, AOL AIM and my own club night Circus’ message board. The responses come in thick and fast: “Well done, nice achievement, go Yousef, wear a bullet proof vest, Marco V never came because of death threats” - you know, the usual banter and well wishing that would greet the achievement. Marco V’s recent cancellation – with the same promoter, according to 365 magazine – was due to the death threats he received on his own message board. I concur that I will be making exactly the same choice too if my lines of communication receive the same treatment, but I’m yet to yield it. But there’s not enough time to check every facet of the information super highway, who knows how high the bounty may be on my head?!? Later I’m picked up by Muhammad and taken to the top of Qassyoon Mountain for a glimpse of the surrounding areas and a bite to eat. En route the drivers all drive like their wives are about to give birth on the back seat and they’ve downed a bottle of Dom in pre-celebration. With tightly gripped hope I hold on to my seat and clutch my seat belt (the only person in the car wearing one). We dodge though the insane traffic at speed, yet even at this pace I find it easy to spot the countless machine gun wielding military police on every street corner. “They are the reason Syria is so safe” explains Muhammad, whilst failing to see the irony that the drivers are wilfully going against that mantra. Though it only dawns on me later on in the hotel room; I’m too busy gawping with fear at their antics as they continue to treat our lives with gleeful disdain. At the top of the aforementioned mountain a local magazine has come to meet us, looking to grab the scoop on myself and my Syrian predicament. The interview is littered with the usual questions;

“..the drivers all drive like their wives are about to give birth on the back seat and they’ve downed a bottle of Dom in pre-celebration.” my favourite place to play, do you love Syria and do I have a message for “my fans” (of which I was building steadily from the promoter, driver, and journo outwards – not bad for 8 hours in a country). I happily answered all the questions and closed with one of my own - “what happened with Marco V?” At this point Muhammad steps in, suggesting the threats were from rival promoters trying to flummox the gig and that by the time they’d come in, it was too late for Marco to be persuaded otherwise. Still unable to see all the internet comments, I casually ponder the potential price on my head… Later on during lunch, conversation slips to my own promoting: could I help the Syrian scene personally by fronting a festival? I politely point out that maybe with myself being the first DJ to play here, perhaps things are running a little too slowly for that just yet. But it’s a nice thought, and with Muhammad enthusing about over ten years of experience promoting, I’m hesitantly optimistic. We drive back to the hotel, throughout more dangerous traffic, heavily armed police and even past a UN range rover searching for a parking

feature space in this busy to bursting city. It sure contrasts with the comparative ‘wildness’ of Ibiza.

I smile and split directly to my bed: my immersion in the Syrian scene is over for tonight.

Next is the sound check, and despite a decade of working in the business there’s no monitor in the booth, and although quickly remedied I’m fearing for the worst. The fears are dumbfounded; the sound is great considering the small size of the club and the fact that I’m in a dingy drinking hole in Damascus. Its 7.45pm, 15 minutes before the club opens, a further five hours before my set and a whopping 12 before we shut, yet there’s a healthy stream of people starting to come in. For some, it’s shaping up to be a long ass night…

A few hours later and it’s time to fly back to London, but not before another dice with death. For some reason, haste seems to be a more attractive proposition for my driver than safety and my life seems more in the balance now than at the hands of any internet threats, idle or otherwise. The queues for the airport are catastrophic; Muhammad kindly slips one of the guards a few Syrian pounds and I get ushered through.

My pick up time of 12.30 comes, and goes...I’m told that I need to wait for more people to arrive – as “the locals don’t think I’m coming”. It transpires that 500 angry locals were waiting for Marco to show up and seem less than convinced I will. Eventually at 1am I go downstairs to the lobby, eager to keep my low profile, where I’m met by local TV, radio and press to document the arrival of something new for Syria – not what I had in mind but I’m happy to do a few live interviews – I’m then followed (in a reality TV show style) to the club. In the club, the music is loud and the room is half full. I start immediately by grabbing a mic and introducing myself with thanks. The crowd appear appreciative and so I crack on. I keep the music upbeat and energetic, slipping between the new Prins Thomas remix of Luke Soloman to my own techno fuelled ‘Letter to No One’, and judging by the whoops, claps and cheers it seems to be going well. 90 minutes pass by and the crowd seem a little less receptive to electronic music, I’ve had a few local girls asking me for ‘songs’, and the response to Paul Woolford’s glorious remake of ‘The Sun in My Eyes’ followed by Serge Santiago’s equally exceptional remix of ‘Blind’ is lukewarm. One of the girls returns to explain she meant Arabic vocals and Arabic music. Ahh... After two hours it becomes clear that ‘Jet Set’ in the heart of new Damascus is not exactly ready for my sound, or it would seem, the sound of electronic music at all. A breakers troupe arrive and I’m asked for hip-hop, it’s a request I’d love to comply with but sadly, am unable. At this stage the proceeding DJ arrives, following directly on. I expect local music, or hip hop, yet “DJ Undertaker” stops my track and drops in the hardest, most aggressive trance cut known to man. The remaining crowd parts like the Red Sea.

Eventually I find the BMI check-in desk and am relieved to find the flight is not only direct but I’m also eligible for an upgrade. The sweat that had glistened on my forehead as I clung for life, pirouetting ferociously through traffic, somehow disappears as a wary smile envelops my face. It’s at this point that I ponder on the experience I’ve just had. I’m certainly glad to be part of history, to find a corner of the earth still unexposed completely to the nuances of modern dance music and play my role in bringing it somewhere yet to experience it properly. Even the near deaths (ahem...), musical mishaps and the feeling of not really being ‘got’ can’t dull the moment. Whilst I’d be lying if I said the gig was enjoyable, the whole trip was certainly an experience. And that surely is what DJing, and for that matter, what life full stop, is all about. [Yousef] DJ Yousef plays at Oceans 27 on the 2nd of May with C-Pen thanks to Massive Vibrations and Front Media JKT...

Defining

the DJ

ELECTRONIC MUSIC HAS TAKEN THE WORLD BY STORM, PROVING TO BE AN ART FORM THAT IS NOT ONLY HERE TO STAY, BUT WILL CONTINUALLY REINVENT ITSELF THROUGH EVOLVING GENRES AND THE EXPERIMENTAL IDEAS OF THOSE WHO PRODUCE ITS SOUNDS. THERE ARE PLENTY OF TITLES FOR THE VARYING STYLES OF DANCE MUSIC AND ATTEMPTING TO DEFINE THEM CAN BE LIKE TRYING TO DESCRIBE COLOR TO A BLIND MAN. SO WHO BETTER TO ASK THAN SOME OF OUR LEADING PLAYERS…

Techno

According to Remy Irwan the definition of Techno is… “Techno is a form of electronic dance that emerged in Detroit, Michigan (USA) in the mid to late 1980s. From the 80s, right up until 2005, Techno was characterized by heavy electronic drum, synthesizer and sequencer sounds. Techno music got its name because of this; it very obviously used technology to create its distinctive sound; it rejected the usual melodies and lyrics about falling in and out of love that were, and still are, so popular with other genres like Pop and R’n’B. Now, Techno has evolved, along with House music on the whole; it is more ‘easy listening’ with lighter sub-genres emerging, such as Minimal Techno and Techno House.”

Created, influenced and popularized by? “The Techno genre was developed by a Detroit threesome known as the ‘Belleville Three’ in the 80s. The 90s saw Ambient, Hardcore and Industrial Techno reach European dance floors, where the Euro Dance sub-genre became massive in clubs. This is the style I’m most familiar with.”

Is it popular in Indonesia? What is happening with techno music right now? “In the club scene, particularly with the younger party crowds, it is really popular. Jakarta has played a huge part in the Techno and Dance scene’s development across Asia. It’s played by many DJ’s, but I disapprove of the separation of DJ’s by genre, because I see it as a death of creativity; a combination or fusion enriches the sounds of our sets. The difference between Minimal Techno, Progressive and Tech House are so hard to distinguish now anyway. My Techno sets are dominated by kick or bass-line sounds with synth or piano. Lately, I’ve been using 3 decks with trick effects, beat loops plus acapella. If you were to ask me what I play now, I would have to say anything between House and Techno.”

Remy Irwan helped pioneer the dance scene in Indonesia from the 1990s. He was appointed resident of the first underground dance club in Jakarta, B1, and since then, has gone on to receive endless awards and grace the decks of clubs worldwide, including Ibiza superclub ‘Space’ alongside legends like Felix Da Housecat and Groove Armada. Remy has been Embassy’s (Jakarta) resident since 2002, where he has shared his booth with the likes of Louie Vega, Smokin’ Jo and Derrick May.

Live Earth The

Live Earth concert scheduled at GWK was almost canceled, due to a variety of mishaps, but went ahead when the venue was changed to the Pecatu Indah Resort. This environmental event themed around water conservation was kicked off with a 6km fun walk, followed by a massive concert showcasing a line-up of some of Indonesia’s big name artists, including local celebrities Tol Band Tol, Nymphea, Frets, The Hydrant, Navicula, and Superman Is Dead. Big name musicians Nugie, Dicky Darmawan, God Bless and Slank were also on stage to help spread the word and educate people on current environmental issues being faced within Bali and across the world. and Screen such as Marshanda and Nadine Chandarwinata were also present to outline the importance of water preservation. To close the show, all the guest stars took to the stage to sing the event’s theme song titled ‘Krisis Air’ (Water Crisis), leaving the crowd with a hardhitting message. Founded by Emmy-winning producer Kevin Wall in partnership with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Live Earth is a succession of non for profit events worldwide built upon the belief that ‘entertainment has the power to transcend social and cultural barriers to move the world community to action’. Let’s hope more sponsorship and greater support gives the Bali based event more leverage in the future.

I

f you want to experience the flavours of Italy but not the expense of an airline ticket, get down to Sorriso restaurant for the ultimate Italian spread. This place is genuine Italian fine dining... and the best thing about it? The price.

range. And here’s where even more real value for money comes in: 4 courses – count them, four – for an unbelievable 65K! Take your pick of two different dishes per course on this special promotions menu.

It’s not just the great food you’re willing to pay for here, but the surroundings too. Come to Sorriso and you’ll feel, well... spoiled. Customers are greeted with beaming smiles from professional, efficient and immaculately dressed staff. You will be led to your table, seated, draped with a crisp white cloth napkin then presented with a HUGE selection of choice.Whilst mulling over the menu, you can’t help but notice how lavish your dining environment is. There’s a warm, stylish ambience here, created by fantastic lighting, beautifully set wooden tables, a very contemporary and chic bar area and huge plush sofas that form an ideal area to chill with your friends pre or post-dining with a drink – if it hasn’t been snatched up by another lucky group of customers already. The décor here screams ‘style’, and believe me, is a sign of good things to come.

From the main menu, choose from an array of tastebud-tempting anti-pastas (starters). We sampled the Carpaccio di Manzo con Rucola (55K); juicy wafer-thin beef on rucola salad leaves, perfectly accentuated by slivers of cheese. For your second course, try some traditional pizza, cooked in Sorriso’s genuine Italian pizza oven. On the menu from 7th May is new pizza, Ciccio Condito (65K); this pizza is a healthier option and looks and tastes so fresh. Dressed rucola salad leaves, diced fresh tomatoes and cubes of Bocconcini cheese (from the Italian word, meaning ‘small mouthfuls’) sit on top of the trademark, thin and crispy, stone-baked base. Of course, with any Italian meal, some form of pasta is a must. Sorriso’s Strozza Preti Marinara (55K) consists of beautiful homemade pasta, a mixture of seafood including tasty prawns, clams and tender rings of squid, with slices of zucchini. If pizza or pasta isn’t for you, there is a whole range of other Italian ‘secondi piattis’, including the Cernia all ‘Acqua Pazza (45K). This dish is a melt-in-your-mouth fillet of snapper, poached in a hot broth of seasoned wine vinegar and cherry tomatoes.

Speaking of drinks, choose from your typical selection, including wine, or try something from the vast cocktail list. We loved the 70K ‘Flirtini’ – a cool concoction of raspberry vodka (yum), triple sec, lime, pineapple and cranberry juices, topped off with sparkling wine (yum again). And amazingly, if you get here between 5pm and 8pm, you can get this - along with all other cocktails and spirits - with a whopping 50% off. Whilst nibbling on the complimentary hors d’oeuvres, we continued to peruse the menu – there really is that much choice. There is a separate Asian Flavours menu, with prices ranging from 18K-39K, along with the extensive Italian

The icing on the cake for us was a delectable dessert: the Chocolate Profiteroles (25K) were oozing with a thick vanilla and tangy lemon cream filling, and smothered in a rich chocolate sauce. In the style of Facebook, we ‘like’. There’s no need to travel to Sorrento. Just hit Bali’s own Sorriso. beatmag.com | 083

Taming the

Technique

Isa Perkasa

Born: Majalengka, 21 June 1964

The Process

Isa Perkasa is an artist who uses the canvas to visualize his concerns on Indonesia’s social-political issues. Instead of using the standard material for his canvas, in his latest exhibition titled ‘Ingatan yang Diseragamkan’ (Uniformed Thoughts) he uses the material generally used for government and military official uniforms. By applying soft pastels on this unique canvas, he creates lifelike portraits, stating his message on certain political conditions.

the Inspiration

Many of Isa’s works of art depict corrupt government officials who are involved in governing this country, and his distaste for their methods is clearly stated within his artwork. His choice of material as his canvas is meant as a reminder to those in uniform that they have a responsibility to fulfil towards their country and their people.

Exhibitions and Awards

More than just a pictorial artist, Isa is also a well-known performance artist, who has been participating in many group performances since 1988. This has led him to perform throughout Indonesia and also abroad, including Finland, America and other parts of Asia. His visual arts, apart from being featured throughout Indonesia, have been presented in many galleries around the world through joint exhibitions in Vietnam, Japan and America. In 1998, Isa was in the Top Five at the Phillip Morris Indonesia Art Awards and also the Top Five Jurors’ Choice at Phillip Morris Asia Art Awards in Hanoi, Vietnam. Dragonfly Wednesday 14 may 10pm

Sounds Like House, Progressive House, Disco House Hails From France

Has Been An inspirational moment came to Norman when he heard the tunes of Bob Sinclair and Daft Punk. From then on, he dedicated himself to learning the skills to become a DJ of that calibre. First appearing in 2002 in his own hometown, he eventually got the resident spot at a club in Lille. The first track he concocted on his own back in 2006 was titled ‘In The Name of Love’, and featured regularly in many DJs’ playlists. His self-created tracks after that are uncountable, many of which are being played by big name international DJ’s.

is Now Norman Doray will be presenting his House Set at Dragonfly on the 14th of May. R

Red Square Jakarta went the way of the old Wild West minus the dust and tumble weeds. The Wild Wild West event featured Dancing Cowgirls accompanying sharp shooting DJ’s ‘Sheriff’ Larry Satrio and ‘The Wildest’ DJ Tiara Eve. With the Dancing Cowgirls Square-dancing to House and Tech House beats, things turned out to be a mix of good, beautifully bad and ugly.
