Dance music terminology can be a little confusing sometimes and getting a clear answer from anyone as to what genre is playing at any given time is almost impossible. The best informed would have to be the DJs that spin the stuff or the producers that make the stuff, but most of the time one comes up blank there too. I recall interviewing Dash Berlin recently and asking how he would define his music and he simply said “Brush strokes of emotion”, while I was expecting an answer like ‘vocal trance’. “It’s electronic” is probably the most common way of describing dance music but there are so many genres and so many varying beats and speeds that can build you up, drop you down or just blow you away it’s really hard to say what’s what. I wasn’t born into electronic music, coming more from a rock music base of many years ago, but in recent times and obviously hanging around this magazine for so long the electronic world has definitely rubbed off. Way too many nights in dark rooms with pounding repetitive music has also had its effect. But during the final stages of making this edition of the beat a debate broke out in the office about the term EDM. Obviously it’s the abbreviation of electronic dance music but somewhere along the way it appears to have become something else, something called edm. What is it? We’re going to research this for a story in the next edition but if you have an opinion on what edm is let us know by sending an email to editor@beatmag.com. We are now closing in on the high season and the island is packed with people again. This is not a surprising phenomenon since it does happen every year so we aren’t going to sit here and lament about Lost Bali etc, like so many people around here do, we’re going to rejoice in it, we love it. Bring it on! There’s plenty on around the traps and a great time to be on the island, one of the most popular tourist islands in the world, and one of the best places in the world to live. Yes, we love it around here. Hope you do too.

SOLE MEN’s concert of Support for Two Seriously Disabled Families in Denpasar Yayasan Solemen Indonesia (Sole Men) is organizing two fundraising concerts with performances with headlining acts Superman is Dead (SID) and Navicula, and a host of other bands. The concerts held over two consecutive nights are on this Saturday and Sunday nights, July 27 and 28 at Hard Rock Hotel’s Centerstage. Through these charity events, Sole Men aims to raise money for re-housing two destitute families with the same genetic abnormality affecting seven out of their ten children and are in dire poverty. Neither family has ever received any form of help except from Sole Men in the forms of food, medical supplies and toiletries and from Yayasan Kerti Praja (YKP) who gave free therapy to the children. Please support them with this noble cause by coming down to the concerts, sharing the news with your friends, buying the T-shirt pictured or, if possible supporting Sole Men financially. No amount of support is too small or too big, and is much appreciated by the families. Remember the concerts are on this Sunday and proudly sponsored by The Beat magazine. www.solemen.org.

kudeta bali’s acclaimed cd series is back with volume 4 Ku De Ta Volume 4 is filled with elegant, edgy, modern disco sounds that are both current yet timeless. The perfect aural reflection of a venue that has undergone spectacular physical transformation this year with the creation of Mejekawi - an innovative, ultra-modern ‘tasting’ kitchen - as a glamorous extension. The collection features many songs that all evoke the epitome of Ku De Ta’s musical sunset moments. The CD includes Sare Havelick’s ‘Pure Sin’, Gigamesh’s ‘All My Life’, ‘Triple Fin’ by Blue Azure, ‘Forever in Love’ by Unorthodoxx and many more. Make sure you get the new Volume 4 and enjoy those soulful disco grooves. According to DJ SD at 98.5FM, who has been spinning some of the tracks on his Drivetime show on Fridays, it’s the best thing they’ve done yet.

SCOOP Two-Day Soulshine Festival with Michael Franti Musician, poet and social activist, Michael Franti will hold a two-day Soulshine Festival on December 27 and 28 at the Green School Bali. The funds raised through this music and green festival will benefit Bumi Sehat’s natural birthing clinics in Bali and Aceh, Indonesia, and the Green School’s Indonesian Scholarship Fund, which provides free education for some select Indonesian children. The festival is about encouraging everyone to develop their dormant potential to make a difference to our planet and their world for the better. Many star-studded performances will take place on the two days, including Michael Franti and Spearhead. In between the performances there will also be an environmentally-themed series of award-winning speakers and films, morning yoga, an eco kids’ zone, vendors and food booths. Treatment of the month Teosyal is 100% hyaluronic acid-based; a powerful moisturizing substance naturally present in the human body. Its hydrating qualities boost skin tone and assist in the prevention of new wrinkles and lines. Instantaneously fills in lines and wrinkles on the face and neck, plumps lips, enhances cheekbones and softens the contours of the face. The treatment itself only takes 30 minutes and can last from 6-12 months. Throughout July it will be 20% off.

Super Taste Rising Astidama Distillery, the first and finest Indonesian whisky distiller proudly presents Drum Green Label Premium Whisky. The Drum Green Label itself is known for using the best malts from UK combined with the 4-year aging method creating the tastiest of whiskies. Based on that taste, it won a Gold Medal at the Spirits International Prestige Awards (SIP Award) in 2012. Drum Green Whisky competed with hundreds of international brand in this spirit competition. This award makes Drum Green Label Whisky the first Indonesian whisky that has gotten international recognition. “Competing with hundreds of international brands was such stiff competition for us. Gladly, the sixty judges chose us and recognized our premium quality so we won a gold medal,” said Astidama Distillery Managing Director Dedy Gusanto.

Guy J

Friday July 26

Roots

In the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, where psy trance dominates, there is one DJ in the school of house and techno that one should watch out for. That DJ is Guy J. Guy is one of today’s most emotive DJs and producers in Israel. He started producing at 14 and finally matured to the big league at 21, when his first release was brought forth for the world to hear.

Sounds

House, techno.

Where you might have heard him

2007 saw Guy jump up the ladder of DJ rankings with his single “Save Me”, which was quickly snapped up by John Digweed to be released on his Bedrock imprint. Having had this rock solid start, Guy continued adding to his body of work by adding his debut album entitled Esperanza to his portfolio in 2008. In that album, he displayed his versatility for mixing house, techno, electro and electronica elements. His later releases also found their way to the market through another big-name label, Turbo, which has its own loyal listeners. Last year, Guy begun his most rewarding project yet by creating a label of his own called Lost & Found (a sub-label for Bedrock).

Why see him

His sounds travel far beyond the Israeli border. Guy’s innate talent and technical mastery have enabled him to create a rather large name for himself in house music. If you love exploring fine tunes and dancing on full emotions, then head down to Mint on July 26.

Riri Mestica

Friday July 26

Roots

Riri Mestica was born and raised in Jakarta and started his musical journey as a guitarist. At the age of 17, he moved to Europe, where he continued his exploration of music in a small bar in Montreux, Switzerland, “Mayfair Café”. After a few years shaping his DJ techniques, in the year 2000, he arrived back in Jakarta to explore the Indonesian music scene that he hadn’t really experienced till then. It took only three months until Riri Mestica got involved in a brand new club called Retro. Together with his fellow DJ buddy, Romy, they made Retro the busiest club in town for many years.

Sounds

Progressive, house, electro.

Where you might have heard her

Riri is now flying every weekend to major cities in Indonesia, promoting his fourth album and banging out the tunes to packed crowds all over. His latest single, “Last Call” has set itself to be the local anthem and the most requested in the clubs. ‘Rusty Guitar’, is a full throttle electro house track, which he produced in two days from a raw concept with DJ Kono shows is off hi production skills. Riri has DJ’d alongside the likes of Cressida, Marco V, Ferry Corsten, Dash Berlin, Kaskade, Tocadisco, Felix da Housecat. But his achievements don’t end there. In 2007 he was crowned No.1 DJ in Indonesia’s at the Paranoia Awards and won the AMI Award for the best Dance Track for ‘Fadeaway’. Accompanying another award for Best Live PA of the year 2007.

Why see her

This high flying Indonesian DJ is in the middle of another Indonesian tour. If you missed him in Kuta a few weeks ago this is your chance to catch him live at ZJ’s on July 26.

Mandel Turner

Friday July 26

Roots

Having been introduced to a wide spectrum of music ranging from soul to pop to R&B and disco. Mandel Turner has transformed himself from a singer in gospel choirs at church into what he is today, a dance music DJ. He is not only a talented DJ and producer, but also a gifted singer touring many countries in Europe and beyond. Inspired by New York’s own legendary DJ, Larry Levan, Mandel jets to clubs around the world when not in his home base, Paris, France.

Sounds

Deep house, soulful house.

Where you might have heard him

Mandel has a long list of performances both as a DJ and a singer. You might have chanced upon his name on stage or in clubs or festivals in France or other places like right here in Bali. He has visited our shores already a few times laying his sets down at many clubs here. DJing aside, his singing is fabulous, and he has been an MC and lead singer during many tours around the planet. Mandel has dropped a number of albums, remixes, singles and CD compilations which have garnered great feedback from critics and punters alike. One notable fan is famed disco producer and music icon from New York, Patrick Adams with whom Mandel has done a number of collaborations.

Why see him

Mandel Turner is a multi-talented musician whose works have been accredited to be some of the sexiest sounds in house music. For a tease before going to his show, check out his current project and search this on YouTube: “Franck Roger - Sands Of Time (feat. Mandel Turner)”. Ungu

Friday July 26

Roots

Ungu was formed in 1996 and over recent years, the band has seen a number of changes in their line-up, and their current formation is Pasha, the front man, Makki playing bass, Enda and Cion playing guitars, and Rowman behind the drums. Ungu is an Indonesian word which means purple and implies an amalgamation of the diverse talents that each member contributes to the band. For example, Pasha, for a short while, used to be a model and TV actor, whereas Makki played music in the US.

Sounds

Pop rock.

Where you might have heard them

Ungu’s first hit came after they dropped their debut album entitled Laguku (My Song) in 2002, and the first single from that album, “Bayang Semu” went on to be the soundtrack of an Indonesian soap opera and was certified platinum two years later. Their sophomore album, Tempat Terindah, fared even better, with 80,000 copies sold within four months. Moving onward, their third album, Melayang, was certified double platinum, and in between making studio albums, Ungu has also produced four religious-themed albums, one of them released in 2006 entitled SurgaMu (Your Heaven) and received the Best Religiousthemed Album at the SCTV Music Awards 2007. Still at the same event, Ungu outshined other contenders in many other categories too, especially for their single “Andai Kutahu”, winning two awards. In that same year, they released their fourth album Untukmu Selamanya in four countries including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

Why see them

The indefatigable Ungu doesn’t seem to be stopping or slowing down anytime soon. Almost every year they belt out the hits. The band will be playing at Boshe on July 26.

Stafford Brothers

saturday July 27

Roots

Chris and Matt Stafford call the Gold Coast their hometown and have been known since the first time they laid their hands on a set of turntables as a pair of fun loving, party throwing DJs. The brothers have been no strangers to music as both had been playing the guitar and piano since a young age while absorbing electronic music at the same time. The boys also have university degrees in business and were pretty active in sports. Since attending a rave party at a warehouse, their life was changed as both agreed they want nothing else but to be the guys up behind the decks.

Most Australians know who the Stafford Brothers are as they are currently number one DJs in Australia according to the 2011 & 2012 inthemix DJ Awards. But they will definitely go further with more productions on the way and regular performances from Ibiza to Las Vegas. As a matter of fact Matt and Chris have just moved to Los Angeles while taking up DJ residencies for Tao Group worldwide. On 23 February 2011 the Stafford Brothers commenced their first official World Tour, with 35 shows scheduled within a period of 90 days. The tour covered Australia, Asia, America and Europe. Meanwhile since January 2011 they have had their own reality TV show on Australia’s Fox8 which captures their DJing lifestyle and shows it to the masses. In 2012, they release a single featuring Lil’ Wayne and Christina Millian called “Hello” which went double platinum in Australia. Their latest shows include Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Mykonos, Ko Samui and soon to be Bali.

Why see them

To say that the brothers are a successful DJ team from Australia doesn’t do justice to what they can do. More than anything the boys know how to put on a show that often involves stage diving by either one of them. Matt and Chris Stafford are known to always infuse excitement into their crowd through their brand of funky house music. These guys combined with the Sky Dome are going to be an awesome combination.

Yolanda Be Cool & Cassius

sunday July 28

Roots

Yolanda Be Cool - is an electronic dance music duo comprised of Sylvester Martinez and Johnson Peterson, and both DJs hail from Sydney, Australia. With over a decade of DJing under their belts, and musical influences that extend far beyond their native Sydney, from old school hip hop, to Chicago house, to techno to pretty much everything in between they are a duo that really knows how to make any type of crowd enjoy their sounds and a night out. Cassius - As hard rock and funk fans, Zdar (Philippe) and Boom-Bass (Hubert) first made their mark producing and engineering the sound sought by hip-hop artists back in the 90s, but the raves that Zdar attended converted him to house music and soon infected Boom-Bass to the dark side of sped up techno. They were a new project, Cassius.

Sounds

Electronic, club, swing house.

Where you might have heard them

Yolanda Be Cool - They made their commercial recording debut with the “Afro Nuts” EP on the Australian independent label Sweat It Out in 2009. The following year they teamed up with DCUP on the house track “We No Speak Americano,” which was initially released on Sweat It Out and later licensed for release by numerous other labels. “We No Speak Americano” topped the British, Spanish, German, Mexican, Argentinean, Danish, Swiss, and Ecuadorian charts so far, and reached the Top 5 in Australia, France, Italy, Spain and Norway. Cassius - The duo’s first eponymous album in 1999 is a collection of instrumental tracks recorded over two previous years, this album created Cassius and is still their most popular album to date. Au Rve, which followed three years later, is the duo’s confessions, an effort to build a “musical monument.” It was “a utopia, into which we put a lot of time and resources – maybe too much,” said the duo. In between producing three hugely successful French albums for MC Solaar, including the minor UK hit “Bouge De La”, they developed the abstract, proto trip-hop grooves of La Funk Mob. From then on the resultant slice of squelchy tech-disco became a standard for every DJ from Andy Weatherall to Harvey.

Why see them

Yolanda Be Cool is one duo that you definitely don’t want to miss, but to make this show even better, Cassius, the French electronic duo will be joining the bill and will be playing side by side with the Aussies, and a bunch more DJs at this year’s SPF Day Party from 1pm till 4am so whoever comes down to watch them live at Woo Bar on July 28 has got a fantastic night of funky beats ahead of them!

Roman Baker

Friday aug 2

Roots

Roman Baker started his musical journey in a rather unusual way. Born Roman Baker Leegstra, he is now based in Amsterdam and was closely associated with the breakbeat, funk, disco, soul, hip hop classics and the b-boy culture during his formative years. At 18 years old, Roman made mixing his priority and explored different genres in pursuit of his sound. Not so long after, he had his first gig ever, and the rest is history...

Sounds

Hip hop, RnB, swingbeat.

Where you might have heard him

As well as playing regular gigs in Holland, Roman has played in Belgium, Germany and Indonesia. In the Netherlands, he has spun tracks most notably in clubs around Limburg. Currently, Roman is highly regarded as the creme de la creme amongst urban/eclectic DJs in the south of Holland which led to acknowledgement by Amsterdam bars and festivals booking him all over. Roman started gigging with a number of well-known DJs and musicians like Fullscale, Goodgrip, FS Green, and Lady Bee and many more. Apart from blazing tracks at parties like ‘The Legend of the Golden Era’ at Suzy Wongs, ‘Bum Rush’ in Hoofddorp and ‘Monday’ in Supperclub, Amsterdam, Roman hosts his own events called ‘In Effect’ and ‘In Full Effect’ monthly in Heerlen. His last after party was just held recently entitled ‘The Notorius IBE’, which according to the promo, was the world’s biggest b-boy/Dance event.

Why see him

With strong foundations in the hip hop scene, DJ Roman Baker is on the urban end of the dance music spectrum. Catch him performing his stellar set at Eatoss on Aug 2.

D

a m i a n Saint is a world class DJ living full time in Bali. He has spun for Ministry of Sound Bangkok, Taipei and Singapore and has travelled around showing most of the world his skills when it comes to spinning the best tracks. Damian has residencies at Mint, WooBar and is soon to be a resident at the new Townhouse. You can follow him on facebook (www.facebook. com/damiansaintmusic) or on soundcloud for his tracks and live recorded mixes (soundcloud.com/ damian-saint). Well lets start off with your background. How did it all begin? Very long story but we’ll do the quick version... Started in ’98 in my home town of Blackpool in the UK and landed a residency at a club called The Waterfront in ’99. Ministry of Sound Asia hired me for Ministry of Sound Bangkok in 2001. I spent just over a year and a half there before getting the call to move to Taipei and open Ministry of Sound Taipei in 2003. I played there until I got the call to move to Singapore towards the end of 2005 to open Ministry of Sound Singapore which was the best one by far, I loved it there. I was there for just under three years before coming to Bali for the first time in 2008 to play for Ocean Beach Club and Sky Garden, the good old Sky Garden, the small one. I moved around a bit between Bali, Seoul, Sydney and Amsterdam for a couple of years before coming back to Bali full time in 2010. From your very first memory, what led you on the path to be a DJ?

92

www.beatmag.com

I remember it began early in high school when I was 12 years old with mix casettes from the old raves being passed around. My cousin was a heavy influence too at the time. He’d give me the early albums and singles from The Prodigy, LFO, The Orb, Leftfield, Orbital, K-Klass and so on. A friend of mine... his sister’s boyfriend was a DJ and had a pair of Technic 1210’s (The holy grail of turntables) and used to play the warehouse parties and illegal raves out in fields. We used to go to his place and play around on them not really having any idea what the hell we were doing. I soon got bored of it and left it alone. For some reason when I was 18 I got the bug back and decided I was going to get into it and make it my profession. I was fortunate enough for that to actually happen to me as I’ve never really had a “proper job”. It was quite geeky to be a DJ back then. It was worlds apart from what it is now. If you weren’t a DJ and music wasn’t a profession to you, what music would you listen too? All kinds of stuff. My iTunes is a mess of hip hop, drum n bass, The Doors, Oasis, The Avalanches,

FEATURES

P r i m a l Scream, Jay–Z, SBTRKT, Tricky, Massive Attack... the list goes on. Did you know DJs do actually listen to other styles of music from the style they play out at gigs? The crowd is stale, they’re all looking bored, hugging the walls. What song do you put on to liven up the scene? I think I’ve played at this place you’re describing to me once before. Well it’s said you have to get the girls moving first to get the guys moving. I’d actually stop the music and shout over the mic “Danny Fry is buying a round of shots for the whole club whist dancing naked on the bar and breathing fire”. I’m sure that’d liven things up and get it going. I may actually try it this weekend. Whats awesome about working in Bali? Sunshine 70% of the year, amazing waves for surfing, amazing beaches, the food, good friends, my wife, my dog, most of the people are really nice and then the club scene is really developing and putting Bali on the map internationally. It feels good to be a little part of that. That’s what’s awesome about working and living in Bali. What’s sucks about working in Bali? Traffic, lack of internet stability and speeds, bad drivers, the annoying guys on the street shouting “viagra, cialis, mushrooms, Valium” and most of all, outrageous immigration policies for foreign DJs. I think that’s about it. We all moan about things here from time to time but as soon as we’re back in a city for a day or two we want to be back in Bali living the island life again. If you were to be stuck in one club for the rest of your life, where would it be? It would be Womb in Tokyo, Velvet @ Zouk in Singapore or Space Ibiza. I’ve been to them all several times and they’re my favorites in the world. World class venues with amazing crowds that are there for music and a good time. Not champagne bottles with sparklers and model DJs (oooh did that sound bitter?)

What’s the number for one of those Russian chicks dancing on the stage at Mint? I’ve seen you staring at them mate. (Ha) I’m a married man now, I don’t have numbers of Russian dancers in my phone but the next time you’re there I’m gonna set you up with the dancers and watch you glow bright red in the middle of the club. (Ha) What do you think of Egyptian army chief general Abdul Fattah al-Sisi ousting President Mohammed Morsi? Don’t know. I try not to follow the news and media much. I like my little bubble life style here in Bali. They should send Sean from Sky Garden in. He’d fix it all up and fast. I can just see those Pyramids lit up with Taco Tuesdays or Wings Wednesdays. What’s the worst song request you’ve ever heard? Where do I begin..? They vary from Bieber to Rihanna to Guetta to “More energy” to “Speed it up” to “I’ve got my USB stick, can I play some tracks?” The best one though is always the drunken idiot that thinks the DJ booth is the bar... “Pint of Heiniken please mate” I actually got asked for Rihanna last night at Mint, I’m serious. I’d love to see Mamsa’s face if they asked him. Have you ever killed someone? As of yet no, but there’s a shortlist. Best song to play at the end of an interview? The Doors – The End www.beatmag.com

I

t’s a matter of perspective I have decided, it’s how you look at the thing, rather than the thing itself. Someone posted a photo of the new toll road on Facebook the other day and asked the question: after all the years of moaning about the traffic, why is this a bad thing? Indeed. Environmentalists have a point and so do the early expats who bemoan the passing of the lost years, but hey, if it cuts the traffic? In Bali the weather and the traffic are obsessions. If the temperature gauge goes down a couple of degrees, the Balinese are cold, if it goes up a couple of degrees everyone’s sweltering. The weather rarely moves more than a few degrees in any direction, so this is kind of weird.

94

www.beatmag.com

The traffic is terrible, in anyone’s book and it’s become almost a competition between friends as to who waited the longest at the Kerobokan lights or who made it from Jimbaran to Canggu in less than an hour. So, new roads are required and hey, the toll road is pretty sexy, in my opinion. Travelling from home right now, from third world to first, as opposed to how most people do it, I have to laugh at the similarities, and the differences, in perspective. Flying into London in mid-summer to the announcement that at 7am it is 12 degrees, really made me giggle. Then all the people I met there told me how beautiful it was really and how it has been really hot and this day could only get better. Nice, I like the attitude.

FEATURES

Same day I keep flying to Greece only to discover that the riots have started up again following reports that the country is still on austerity and unemployment is at 27%. The taxi driver informs me as we wind through the streets of Athens that we have to go around the “trouble”, but only small trouble he says, “ligo”, as he mimes fighting. The BBC tells a different story, it’s big trouble for Greece. Somehow though, despite unemployed youth very plainly walking the streets, everyone still laughs, on the bus the passengers were laughing with the driver who was losing it up front and everyone seemed so friendly, the locals chatting with Turks and Australians and totally lost French people, nice. Maybe we are having third world/first world reversal?

Whatever the case, wherever you go, you take yourself with you, and your attitudes may not be that much more different in the end than the Balinese grandmother in the kampung, than the British airways flight attendant or the Greek boy in the street who can’t get a job. We all want to get along, humans are always going to be bemused by change and we all want a big hug and a kiss now and then. Simple. And so as I leave behind the politics of Bali and then Athens to mill about with the jet set on the islands of Greece where tourists are more than happy to drink ouzo and complain about politics all day long, but then dive into the crystal clear water and let it all go. An instant change of perspective comes to me, Yammas to that!

Mutants, tiny blue gnomes, and tonto in the lone ranger by: pande

The joy of summer is still among us and we have a load of blockbusters both big and small on the calendar. Wolverine from the X-Mean series is in Japan, the Smurfs move to Paris and The Lone Ranger, well, he’s somewhere in Disney’s verion of the west. Looks like it’s time to update that DVD collection at your DVD shop or if you can find yourself a date, check out www.21cineplex.com!

The Wolverine Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: James Mangold. Writer: Mark Bomback (screenplay), Christopher McQuarrie (screenplay), Scott Frank (screenplay), Chris Claremont (characters and works), Frank Miller (characters and works). Cast: Hugh Jackman, Hiroyuki Sanada, Famke Janssen, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Will Yun Lee.

Set sometime after X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Logan (Hugh Jackman) travels to Japan where a stranger from his past confronts him, leading to lasting consequences for our superhero’s future. Determined to defeat the stranger and his emotional demons, Wolverine puts his adamantium claws to good use against ninjas and other mutants. So, let’s get this straight, we have ninjas and Wolverine battling each other. This has a lot of awesome potential, but if it’s cheesy as the first stand alone Wolverine film, we’ll be disappointed.

The Smurfs 2 Animation, Comedy, Family. Director: Raja Gosnell. Writer: J. David Stem (screenplay and story), David N. Weiss (screenplay and story), Jay Scherick (screenplay and story), David Ronn (screenplay and story), Karey Kirkpatrick (screenplay), Peyo (characters and works). Cast: Hank Azaria, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Fred Armisen, Christina Ricci, J. B. Smoove.

Gargamel, that grouch who hates the Smurfs for no good reason has created two evil Smurf-like creatures named Hackus and Vexy AKA the Naugthies. In order to change them into real Smurfs, who can grant any of Gargamel’s evil wishes, he must first capture Smurfette who is the only one who can cast the secret magic spell. This sequel to The Smurfs (2011) follows the Smurfs and their human friends to Parisin order to rescue Smurfette. Ever wonder why there’s only one female Smurf?

The Lone Ranger Action, Adventure, Western. Director: Gore Verbinski. Writer: Justin Haythe (screenplay and story), Ted Elliott (screenplay and story), Terry Rossio (screenplay and story), Fran Striker and George W. Trendle (characters and works). Cast: Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, William Fichtner.

When six members of Texas Ranger Division are ambushed by a band of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, one Texas Ranger survives. He is saved by a Native American, feather-festooned Tonto (Johnny Depp). And so it begins...sorta. This film by Walt Disney Pictures revives one of America’s most enduring pop culture characters. If you’ve watched Pirates of the Carribean and Rango, where Gore Verbinski and Johhny Depp worked together, you may have some high expectations. I wouldn’t put those expectation too high though, because if you do, you’re going to have an ordinary time watching this roller coaster of a cowboy ride.

FOOD There is a pleasing menu of Asian favourites for those who wish to take one of the washed down wooden tables and have a serious meal. Mains include a range of fresh salads like the mighty Ceasar, some great home-style pastas like the house favourite, Spaghetti With Meatballs and Fish and Chips, holding on to the diner-roots. Breakfast is served from 3am till 3pm holding out for the late nighters who want breakfast before bed or the early or late risers, and fittingly it is filled with Americanstyle favourites from the requisite American breakfast to a perfectly turned French Toast. Dessert also favours the American with a fabulous, home-style Deep Dish Apple Pie and a Creamy Mango Cheesecake but also offered is a selection of Gusto’s island-made ice cream. With an open bar overlooking the busy streetscape of Jalan Oberoi, there are few better positions to stop for an afternoon snack, an evening cocktail after a day’s shopping or a cleansing ale any time of the day. Buzzing and lively with a completely renovated feel that still feels homely and welcoming, Soho turns up the volume on Wednesday nights with a live band and a whole lot of fun. The team behind Soho are experienced restaurateurs who take their food and hospitality seriously and the proof is in the pudding as they say. The food is great.

S

oho first came into view as a 24-hour American-themed diner, serving burgers to dream of and lots more besides.

In the bar, it’s all about casual fun. Come in, sit at the bar, grab a table or perch on the benches overlooking the street and make a few friends, have a few laughs, everyone is welcome at Soho Warung Burgers and Co. [Sarah Dee]

Perhaps the time had come to grow up or maybe there aren’t so many people looking to hide away in the wee hours. Whatever the case, Soho has changed a bit but not really. It still is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and still sports a steller burger menu, but it’s now an open restaurant with a lively cocktail bar and very happy hours every day from 4-8pm. The menu has grown too, to reflect the more mature nature of the original owners. Flowing freely is a range of nibbles that go down very nicely with a few draught beers and Soho has added the famous Kilkenny to its menu of beers. www.beatmag.com

Never ones to dabble in subtlety, the super-stylised Sydney duo of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore make no bones about playing up to the psychedelic voyager image they’ve perfected, and are already well known on the festival circuit as having the best wardrobe this side of Star Wars central casting. Image aside, it’s not hard to see why 2008’s debut effort Walking on a Dream went twice platinum on home turf and gold in the notoriously-hard-to-crack US of A, the feel good disco euphoria contained therein having the same sort of effect as a bottle of Ritalin - you just can’t sit still on it. Happily, Ice on the Dune picks up exactly where Walking… left off, whooshing us straight back off to the outer reaches of their fanciful netherworld of cerebral electro-wizardry. How much you choose to immerse yourself in what the pair have described as a “post apocalyptic adventure” is up to you, but with such does-what-it-says-on-the-tin song titles like ‘Surround Sound”, “Awakening” and “Celebrate” resistance becomes increasingly futile, and by the time the anthemic “Loving every minute ‘cause you make me feel so alive” chorus on “Alive” rolls around three tracks in you’d have to be deaf not to be shouting along with everyone else. Careless listeners may rashly write Ice on the Dune off as the sort of cheap thrill you might find at the more commercial end of the biz, but as with all the best proper recent pop (Saint Etienne’s Words and Music or Daft Punk’s acclaimed Random Access Memories spring to mind) Steele and Littlemore have real songwriting chops, meaning that the arrangements are spot on and the ubiquitous homages to pop’s past are never far from bubbling to the surface. “Concert Pitch” and “I’ll be Around” re-imagine effortless Fleetwood Mac style melodies for the digital generation - all that’s missing are the Lindsay Buckingham guitar solos, but otherwise they are both flawless highpoints. “Keep a Watch” is pure Bowie, perhaps a little too thick admittedly, but a worthy closer to an exceptional LP nonetheless. Whether Ice on the Dune eclipses their debut is anyone’s guess, but if you’re going to be in Bali over the next few months then expect it to be the soundtrack to the high season. Dan Ashcroft is out to lunch.

It consists of a wireless keychain remote control and a wallmounted or freestanding dispenser whose hopper is filled with dry kibble or treats. Harnessing the conditioning techniques Ivan Pavlov discovered with salivating canines, owners can direct the dispenser to release a treat whenever a dog behaves well, reinforcing good habits and teaching dogs to equate them with food. The 25’ range eliminates the need to always have treats nearby and provides training opportunities throughout a home. BRIDGES BALI July 19– October 31 COLORS OF BALI Bridges is proud to present the works of Dutch artist Theo Zantman who has been actively painting in Bali since 2001. Zantman was born in 1953 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands where at the young age of three, he began to draw and sketch. Theo’s expressive and vibrant works are strongly inspired by the beauty and prominence of the colours in Bali’s nature. Zantman has spent a lot of his time in the villages of the northern part of Bali where his paintings have been inspired by his daily village life and of the sawah; expressing the strong connection he has with the Island. Zantman’s works have been greatly influenced by Van Gough and it is through his similar painting approach and technique in his works that the connection between him and the late impressionist legend can be easily identified and appreciated. yoman Sujana Kenyem was born on the September 9, 1972 in Sayan, Ubud. Nyoman grew up in a community very untouched by tourism where instead agriculture and local customs and traditions were strongly rooted in the dominant theme of community daily life. It was in his teenage years that the young artist’s style emerged through the influence of Dutch artist Arie Smit in the neighboring village of Penestanan and onto Sayan that began the start of Nyoman’s artistic development and career.

ART

Kenyem graduated from SMSR Ubud and then continued his studies at ISI Denpasar where he graduated in 1998. Much of Kenyem’s work digs deep into the reality of life touching on the relation between macrocosmos and microcosmos; between man and universe. In his latest series of works Nyoman’s theme is visualized and applied through small icons that serve as a reflection of nature in the form of leaves, flowers, bamboo stems and are arranged in a repetitive pattern forming further images and figures. His works are currently being exhibited at Komaneka Fine Art Gallery, Jl Monkey Forest, Ubud. T 03614012217 www.beatmag.com
