Last weekend the Bali high season kicked off for real at KU DE TA with their annual Bikini Day Party showing once again that that particular party is one of the best in town. The spectacle was blazing with tribal colors and excellent sounds from a top line-up of international DJs. One bone of contention amongst punters, though, was the unfortunate VIP area being set up in front of the DJ booth and dance floor stage. This was a first for the Day Party and not very warmly welcomed by seasoned guests. Sure, the high spending folk prepared to put out a zillion to take a sofa space in the VIP area should be given some room but should it be at the expense of the rest of the paying guests. Doesn’t everybody deserve a slice of the front stall action too? We seem to go on about this every year, but nothing appears to change, actually it only seems to get worse. It is a classy show though down at KU DE TA and while the house pour is Kettle One, one shouldn’t complain of course, but as North Lewis said on the night, “I am a man of the people, this is not correct”. Yes, we are of the people and standing up for the people, but maybe elitism does go hand in hand with hedonism and let’s face it, basically they can get away with it - we can say bring down the barriers but I have the impression the barriers will be there for some time yet. Down with the VIP, power to the people! We are still at the peak of the high season. People are here from all over the world in unprecedented numbers and being the Independence Day weekend the local Indonesian number of visitors is going through the roof. This weekend and over the next two weeks there are events on all over town. There are so many events that they hardly fit in the What’s On section. Check there and the HereNow section for all you need to know and drink in moderation you’all.

SCOOP Sanur Village Festival 2013, This September The Sanur Village Festival (SVF) will take place on September 24-28 at Maisonette area of Inna Grand Bali Beach Sanur, with the theme of Segara Giri – The New Spirit of Heritage. Segara Giri in itself is a concept that touches on Tracing the Trails of Life, which in turn depicts the Sanur and Bali community’s commitment to preserve nature and social cultural elements of Bali. This year, in conjunction with the APEC Summit due to be held in Bali in October, the Festival will incorporate the visit by the international delegations in its schedule. More than 20 events are already in the line-up including cultural events, water sports, cooking demonstrations, environment activities, exhibitions and many others, and of course the food festival where you can treat your taste buds with the best food at the best prices in town. Editing and Post-production of ‘Meeting Made in Bali’ The short film by Canadian Michael Pohorly – a Hollywood feature film assistant director, Meeting Made in Bali (starring Ezra Mitchell, Slamet Rahardjo, and Mike Lewis) has started its editing and post-production stages. Mike’s promotional campaign last year for the short movie through a crowd sourcing website, Kickstarter, had been a fantastic one, having raised almost USD 17.5k which was almost enough to make the movie, but a personal injection was also needed. The plan is now to have the sound footage synced with the editing help by multi-award winning Indonesia born filmmaker, Robin Moran. Then, another round of editing will be done with the extra shots, inserts, re-shoots, and aerial work added. Sastha Sunu, one of Indonesia’s most noted and respected film editors has also offered to take a look at the rough edit, before executing the online edit into 2K. With all things done, the movie will be ready to hit the film festival circuit worldwide later this year.
Rotary Bali Charity Tennis Tournament in Nusa Dua Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua is back with their 22nd Annual Rotary Bali Charity Tennis Tournament which will take place from August 24 to September 1. Similar to the last year’s tournament, 100% of the proceeds of this year’s tournament will go directly toward providing health and human services to the poor and disadvantaged children on Bali and nearby islands in the form of cleft lip and palate operations. Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua is aiming to exceed last year’s profit of IDR 75,000k (USD 7.5k). Registrations are already opened and will close no later than August 18 at 7pm. The matches itself will take place on the tennis courts of Nikko Hotel Hotel & Spa, BTDC and Nusa Dua Beach Hotel. More details on draws, locations, and rules can be found at www.rotarybalitennis.org. Don’t miss the chance to play in Bali’s longest running & most popular charity tennis tournament. www.beatmag.com

Roots
Born as Dave Lee on England’s Isle of Whight, Negro’s lifelong relationship with dance music began in the late 70s when he began collecting disco, soul, and funk records. He wasn’t very impressed with the quality of music in his area during the time, so he started digging in the crates of record shops in London. It was in those record shops where he found himself to be most comfortable and most inspired. His first records were stimulated from the sounds of ‘I Can Feel It’ and ‘Jack Your Body’ – well-regarded house classics of the time. Then in about 1990, he released ‘Do You Believe It’ on Nu Groove Records, and not being able to think of a name off the top of his head to press for the record, he took the name from two records which just happened to be piled next to his work desk at the time – a record by Pal Joey and one by J Walter Negro. Since then, he has been recognized as Joey Negro, a master producer, DJ and remixer.
Sounds
Rare disco, vocal house, classic house, electronic, techy deep house.
Where you might have heard him
Acknowledged as a producer foremost, Joey Negro uses his skills on the decks as a platform for modifying and tweaking his own musical productions to a standard of the highest excellence. He has been involved in hundreds of productions to date, dozens of albums, and a mountain of hit singles. From such popular releases like ‘Must Be The Music’, ‘Make A Move On Me’, ‘Can’t Get High With You’, he has established himself as a true industry professional with an incredible work-ethic who only keeps becoming more seasoned in his productions and methods. Throughout the remainder of the decade, he continued releasing his productions under an array of monikers and had even more success as a remixer. His expertise in everything to do with soul, funk and disco paved his path to consult with international radio and television producers and his reputation as an accomplished producer and remixer stemmed in numerous collaborations with such music moguls like Mariah Carey, Kelly Rowland, Royskopp, Sugababes, Empire of the Sun, Diana Ross, Pet Shop Boys, Simply Red, Lionel Ritchie, Roy Ayers , Robbie Williams, 911, Shayne Ward and Roisin Murphy. His most recent release was The Secret Life of Us.
Why see him
Joey Negro is a producing legend and if you are a true disco or house fan, then you’d be silly to miss out on his two events. Catch him live at Cocoon on August 16 and at Hypnotized on August 17.

He then moved to San Francisco to pursue a college education and played gigs on weekends.
Sounds
House, electro, soul, hip hop, RnB, funk, commercial mashup.
Where you might have heard him
After a few successful appearances, Mikey joined his first record label ‘Trigger Production’ in 2005. His skills in spinning various genres earned him a competitive advantage over other DJs in Jakarta but he remained more comfortable playing techno. From July 2005 he became the head of the Trigger label and organized all its events and sponsorship programs up till January 2006. In January 2008, DJ Mikey moved to San Francisco, CA, where he broke international grounds at his first performance in Levende Lounge, he also headlined in Boardners in Hollywood, California. Mikey later made his way to Mumbai, India where he spun a eclectic electro set in one of the city’s prime clubs called Poison in the Bhandra area as well as in Singapore at the Hacienda Lounge. In December 2010, Mikey returned to Indonesia and headlined in Bali with Michael Franti from San Francisco on New Year’s Eve of 2010 and opened for the Ne-Yo and Far East Movement concerts in front of 3000 people in Jakarta. SLANK
friday aug 23
Roots
Slank is one of Indonesia’s legendary rock bands and was formed way back in 1983 by teenagers hanging out in a Jakarta alleyway. They first played Rolling Stones covers and gradually evolved before finally releasing their first album in 1990. The line-up during those years was turbulent, with many members quitting and being replaced. The five current members of Slank are as follows, Bimbim (founder, drums), Kaka (vocals), Ridho (guitar), Abdee (guitar) and Ivanka (bass).
Sounds
Rock, rock & roll, blues.
Where you might have heard them
From 1990 to 1996, they won the Best Selling Album awards for their very first albums namely Suit-Suit.... Hehehe (Gadis Sexy) (1990), Kampungan (1991), Piss! (1993). The band whose HQ is located at Gang Potlot, Jakarta has garnered more than a dozen prestigious awards. Slank has been extremely productive over the years, releasing new albums almost annually, with some years giving birth to more than one album. Famous for their satirical lyrics towards the leadership in the country and their passion to be the voice of the minorities, they’ve reached a cult-like following in Indonesia. In 2005, Slank took their act overseas, notably in South Korea after they were picked to be the icon for MTV Indonesia. From then on, Slank did many overseas tours (Japan, Malaysia, the United States) and collaborations with local artists as well as headlining big events like the Soundrenaline.
Why see them
Despite being around for what seems to be forever, Slank is well-versed in the current trends, not that they need to be, their music is timeless. With a very large fan base, the band is very mobile, giving aural pleasure to Slankers through the occasional national tour and festivals. Don’t miss this opportunity to see them live at Boshe on August 23.

Roots
Born Aydin Hasirci, ATFC holds a bachelors’ degree at Bournemouth University, England and is an AngloTurkish chart-topping DJ and producer. The moniker is not associated with any football team, but it stands for Aydin The Funky Chile. Quite some name, eh? While attending university, ATFC worked at the campus’ radio station, played at Bump ‘N’ Hustle nights at the now defunct Gardening Club as a resident DJ. At that time, under his other name One Phat Dheeva, which is also the name of his production label, he released his first UK hits “In And Out Of My Life” and “Bad Habit” on Defected Records in 1999 and 2000 respectively.
Sound House
Where you might have heard him
Following those two aforementioned tracks, ATFC made four appearances at The Magic Sessions event at Miami’s Winter Music Conference. Since 2006, ATFC has toured the globe, playing at major clubs in every country he visited. 2007 saw him holding a Pascha residency and having collaborations with Funkagenda, Mark Knight, Peyton and Allister Whitehead, making it his best year yet. In 2008 and 2009, Beatport voted him the House Producer of the Year. ATFC is arguably one of the UK’s best house DJs with Three UK Top 40 hits, Beatport and Traxsource No.1’s under his belt to boast about. He’s also done a fair share of remixes in the house scene, most notably infusing his touches to tracks by P Diddy, Missy Elliot, Bootsy Collins, Simply Red, Faithless, and Dido just to name a few. During his time, he’s graced over a dozen music events such as Global Gathering (UK), Dance Valley (Holland), Zoukfest, (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and Summadayze (Australia), not mentioning his regular gigs in Ibiza.
Why see him

Roots
François Kevorkian is a French DJ who now resides in New York. Born in Rodez, France he actually spent much of his time in downtown Paris. In 1975, however, Kevorkian tossed his biomedical engineering and pharmacy studies aside for that fateful move to New York, where he began playing as an underground DJ at clubs such as Galaxy 21 and Experiment Four.
Sounds
Garage house, club/dance, house, post-disco, techno, dub.
Where you might have heard them
Kevorkian has had a great influence on the dance music world spinning at legendary clubs like New York, New York, Paradise Garage, and Studio 54 and being involved in the dance scene at it’s very beginning. He was involved in tape editing and started producing disco medleys, some of which can still be heard today, such as Rare Earth’s “Happy Song”. Kevorkian was also a remixer at a time when that was revolutionary, he remixed for Prelude records and released hits such as “In The Bush” by Musique, “You’re The One For Me’ and “Keep On” by D-Train, and “Beat The Street” by Sharon Redd which were popular dance songs for the era. He had a brief hiatus from DJing in the mid 80s in order to focus on producing but during the surge in demand for big name DJs in the early 90s, he was spinning at London’s Ministry Of Sound and Fabric, Japan’s Spacelab Yellow, Ibiza’s Pacha and Space, as well as Italy’s Angels Of Love. The 2000s saw him evolving into a more eclectic style with heavy influences from spaced-out techno, reggae, dubstep, hip-hop as well as drum & bass, house music and disco. In 2005, he was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.

Sneaky Sound System is a Sydney duo made up of Miss Connie (Connie Mitchell) and Black Angus (Angus McDonald). The story began back in 2000 when MC Double D (Daimon Downey) met Angus at a fancy dress party and became friends. They were soon hosting an event called Sneaky Sundays in late 2001 before eventually forming a record label in 2004 called Whack Records. Soon after they met Connie Mitchell in a city park while she was singing and playing her guitar and she was soon recruited into what became Sneaky Sound System. MC Double D left the group in 2009.
Sounds
Dance, electro house, electro pop
Where you might have heard them
In 2004, they released their debut single “Hip Hip Hooray” which appeared on the ARIA Singles Chart top 100. After Connie joined the band, their biggest breakthrough came with their single “I Love It” which was released in 2006. It peaked at No.24 and spent 73 weeks in the Top 100. This broke the record as the longest charting single by an Australian artist on the ARIA Singles Chart. After MC Double D announced he was leaving Sneaky Sound System to pursue other interests; the group did not falter. Sneaky Sound System has headlined tours as well as supported huge acts such as Robbie Williams, Jamiroquai, Scissor Sisters, Sam Sparro, and Lady Gaga. Mitchell has collaborated with albums by Kanye West, Beyonce, Snoop Dogg and Rick Ross. She and Angus also had a number one hit with Tiesto’s track “I Will Be Here” in 2009 which opened up major doors in the clubbing scene. Their discography includes three studio albums (Sneaky Sound System, 2, From Here to Anywhere) with numerous ARIA Awards along with numerous other nominations.

Samuel L Session
saturday aug 31
Roots
Gothenburg native Samuel Larsson is primarily known as Samuel L Session when he’s behind the decks and producing at the studio. The Swede’s passion started way back in 1988 with a new mixer, a pair of turntables, and a good mate – Max Reich, who taught him producing skills. Samuel was very keen on exploring the dark world of dance music and the two founded their first label called ‘Solid Beat’ in 1995 and started throwing parties.
Sounds
Techno, tech house.
Where you might have heard him
Through his tracks “In Your Box” and “Check Out This I Bring” released on his now-defunct Cycle imprint, Samuel made a name for himself with the former one being played by DJs like Derrick May, Jeff Mills, and Umek among others. Despite the many requests for remixing, spinning and producing from just about everywhere, Samuel decided to put a break on Cycle in 2001 and move on with SLS – another label of his. Here was where the real fun began for Samuel, where he could discover his aptitude for a different spectrum of dance music. In that period, Samuel did remixes for “Visions Of You” by Blake Baxter & Trevor Rockcliffe as well as Funk D’Void’s “Diabla” on Soma. Production-wise, his “Merengue” was remixed by Slam and Oliver Ho, becoming his best sold track yet. Since 2006, SLS was put on hold and Klap Klap became his thing. In 2009, Samuel released his first album “The Man With The Case” on Be As One. Laurent Garnier, Rolando, Francois K, Christian Smith and Adam Beyer are some of the artists who have embraced tracks from that album.
Why see him
Samuel L Session is a prolific DJ/producer with a body of work that would make most people envious. For anyone with a love of smooth deep tech sounds we strongly recommend checking him out spinning those Woobar decks live on Saturday August 31.

tarting out as behind the scenes volunteers at Minikino, Edo, a qualified music teacher, and Cika, a talented architect, are devoted to short films. With minimum cash flow, a very small team, small audience numbers, and almost zero support from the government, it’s pretty remarkable that Minikino, an organization dedicated to showcasing quality short films, has managed to survive. Wait, there’s more to this story... Fast-forward a few years and the role of these two characters has been transformed. Edo and Cika are strong-willed protagonists, vital behind the scenes staff members with dreams. And if the classic story arch is anything to go by, you’d be wise to keep your eye on Minikino. I totally admire your die-hard spirit. How long have you both been doing this Minikino thing? How did it start? Edo: Minikino was founded by my sister Tintin Wulia, Kiki Zayin and Judith back in 2002. They wanted to create a short film culture in Indonesia and to promote exchange and networking between cultures in Indonesia and

FEATURES between Indonesia and other countries. Like me, there are others who hold the same passion and work together in Minikino; but we’re just volunteers, the Minikinauts, who love to talk about good movies. My first project with Minikino, Ping Pong Short Animation Festival, was a kind of a road show of short film screenings in Bali back in 2004. With support from Goethe Institut in Jakarta, the festival’s director, Robin Mallick, and I were able to organize discussion sessions with Robin and screen animation shorts around the island. Cika: My Minikino journey began in 2008, I was one of the regular visitors at their short film screenings. I admire the consistency of Minikino in their attempt to nurture a critical thinking atmosphere and find passion and joy when watching short films. Minikino short film screenings have brought together so many great local and international film makers to Denpasar and it’s amazing to see how these screenings and discussions bring inspiration to so many people in a range of different and personal ways. Does the government ever get involved in your programs? Do you get any support from them? In what ways could they help to make you and Bali cinematography happier? Edo: Is there such a thing as Bali cinematography? …I know some good Balinese filmmakers, and also some other groups of movie lovers, but I think it’s more important that we work together to make the overall Indonesian film scene happier. We need the government to work together with us, a united group of Indonesian film organisations from around Indonesia, not just Minikino. If we want a better future together, we all need to chart the future, discuss things and find the yellow brick road together. I think we need something like an Indonesian Film Commission, just like other neighboring countries around us, a commission that is supported by people who actually work in the film industry. The film industry needs to be run by people who have the Indonesian film industry in their hearts. We have had enough of religious fanatics who try to set moral standards for everyone and greedy people who don’t even have any interest in watching movies! In fact, I have worked with government authorities, for some screenings in the past. But it’s mostly been because of the content of the film or some other reasons. I prefer to do things without them, they’re too bureaucratic, tend to make things more difficult, and work with a way that is threatening. Cika: Rather than focus on Bali, I also prefer to look at the big picture of Indonesian Cinematography. I believe there can be a lot of positive changes if there is an increase in the level of transparency and we focus on how creative activities can be supported and financed by the Government.
Tell us about your latest and/or your future projects? Cika: We’re doing a monthly mini-festival with our regular monthly film screening and discussion but we dream to create a bigger Minikino film festival! Someday... You can keep up to date with our regular, monthly Minikino screenings via our Facebook or Twitter, just search for Minikino events. Our special project this year, My Life My Dreams, is an international film competition and workshop where Jönköping meets Bali. Initiated by the General Culture Department in Jönköping, Sweden, and Minikino.org, the objective is to create cooperation and understanding between the youth of Jönköping, Sweden, and Bali through the process of filmmaking. Furthermore, the project will give the participants knowledge and practical experience in filmmaking and storytelling on a workshop basis. To take part in the project the young people, between the ages 16-20, use their own mobile phones, or any camera, to film a one-minute-film around the theme My Life My Dreams. From these submissions, we will select five young people in Bali and five in Jönköping to make a film. The task of these kids will be to make a joint film, at a distance, together. The film will then be screened at an official screening in both Sweden and Indonesia. We are so happy that schools and colleges are showing support for this project by providing us the time and space to give 60-minute presentations about the project to their students. During those sessions we showed students a collection of one-minute videos and encouraged them to share their thoughts after watching. Many of them had never watched one-minute videos and never in their life appreciated videos by thinking critically about the impression and content of what they’re watching. What they did with Minikino in their own classrooms was awesome! Any last nagging words? Edo: Two things—one practical, and one philosophical. Firstly, a film is meant to be watched with full attention, so sit back and relax, bring some snacks and drinks, but not your dinner table, please shut the phone down and enjoy the film. And the philosophical? There’s no such thing as a true atheist in the film industry. Movies imitate life and, on a film set, the director is God. Can we say the same in life? Cika: Listen to your body! When you doze off during the first 15 minutes of watching a film then it might be a crappy one. It takes a lot of practice to master the levels of awareness needed to be a body language intuitive film critic. Practice makes perfect.

Modern myths, futuristic class struggle, and a Desert car accident by: pande
We have Percy Jackson’s return as a demigod as Greek mythology mashes up with modern times. We have Matt Damon taking on inequality in this sci-fi film on class warfare. We have a French film about a femme fatale trapped with her victim at a desert pile-up in Morocco. Which of these is worthy of your hard earned time? Lets take a look. You might want to visit a local DVD shop near you to watch them, or see it on the big screen of which the schedules are available on www.21cineplex.com!
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Adventure, Family, Fantasy. Director: Thor Freudenthal. Writer: Marc Guggenheim (screenplay), Rick Riordan (characters, based upon the novel “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters” written by). Cast: Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Leven Rambin, Jake Abel, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion.
This film is based on the novel written by Rick Riordan entitled “The Sea of Monsters” (2006). Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), the son of Poseidon, sets out on an epic journey with Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Grover, and Tyson to the Sea of Monsters, situated within the Bermuda Triangle. Their aim is to search for the Golden Fleece (the fleece of the gold hair winged ram) in an effort to save Camp Half-Blood’s magical borders from monsters and cure Thalia (demigod daughter of Zeus)’s poisoned pine tree. If you’re a tween (or a parent) looking for a family movie, this is going to be your best bet.
Elysium Action, Drama, Sci-Fi. Director: Neill Blomkamp. Writer: Neill Blomkamp. Cast: Matt Damon, Jody Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner.
This film is about an orbiting space station where only the wealthy live in the dystopian future. In 2154, Earth has become a slum full of diseases and other overpopulation-related miseries, a con man Max DeCosta (Matt Damon) is about to change things. This film is by Neill Blomkamp who did District 9 and seems to tackle social issues much like its predecessor did with apartheid. If you loved District 9, it’s a pretty safe bet that this film will be awesome.
Intersections Romance, Thriller. Director: David Marconi. Writer: David Marconi. Cast: Roschdy Zem, Frank Grillo, Jaimie Alexander, Marie-Josée Croze, Moussa Maaskri, Charlie Bewley.
When a New York hedge fund manager, Scott Dolan (Frank Grillo) is having a honeymoon with his wife, Taylor (Jaimie Alexander) in Sahara desert, little does he realize the murderous intent of his new bride until he finds her cheating with another guy. Following a car chase and a multi-car pile-up, new characters which include a diamond smuggler, a young French woman and her baby, as well as an enigmatic stranger, are being introduced to the audience with the help of flashbacks. The game of survival begins. We’ll be honest here, this film had horrible reviews, so if you like films that people generally hate, this might be worth a peek.

Similarly the Crispy Fried Prawns (110k++) come with Balinese inspired ‘bumbu basa gede’ espuma, that is the perfect accompaniment to the prawns’ meaty flesh and light tempura crunch. To complete the picture, during a recent afternoon laze by the MBC pool, a friend and I got stuck into a couple of super special cocktails, namely the fragrantly refreshing Delinger, and a
FOOD zingy Spice Breeze (both 95k++). Lounging with a larger crew? Then check out the sharing punch bowls of either sangria, Heaven Citrus or Asian Heart. All three come in 1.5 or 3 litre bowls, with as many (or indeed as few) glasses as necessary. If slaving over a hot sunset is more your thing then the long drinks section might be for you, or alternatively prop up the bar with a clutch of signature classic martinis, margaritas and sparkling concoctions. With a wonderfully varied selection of other nibbles, salads, Spanish favourites, veggie options and sea or land inspired tapas to pair up with your cocktail, the grazing at Mozaic Beach Club is well taken care of. Those after something altogether more prescribed would be well advised to check out the current two course set menu deal, available Monday to Saturday from 12-4pm. Choose from a selection of mouthwatering appetisers and delectable mains for just 185k++. There’s even a selection of freshly baked breads thrown in. Despite being drawn to the French goat cheese with watercress, hazelnuts and fennel salad to start, I end up making a last minute pressure decision and plump for the Pork Risotto Cake with mustard cream base, gede oil and garden salad which I do not regret. From the mains I can’t go past the Tasmanian Salmon with Smoked Baby Potatoes, fresh coriander and dashi broth – the crispy salmon skin and light broth being a particular highlight. Open from 10am to late for lunch, dinner, bar grazing and beyond, Mozaic Beach Club has undoubtedly raised the bar for chic beach-side dining, and with a roster of live entertainment every Thursday, Friday and Sunday plus the MBC DJ lounge sunset sessions from Thursday to Sunday from 4-7pm. You’d be mad to miss it.

The Moka Sundae
TODAY’s SPECIALS
Café Moka has a new selection of ice cream sundaes and one sundae we want the world to know about is their Dark Chocolate Sundae (39k). It’s a traditional sundae that comes with three Astors, homemade dark chocolate ice cream surrounded in whipped cream and includes chocolate syrup, dark chocolate shavings and a strawberry on top. Close your eyes and envision a sundae, that’s exactly what you get at Café Moka. The ice cream at Moka is made fresh everyday… now that’s sweet.
ON Naughty Energy THE ROCKS
If you’re looking to have a good time and you’re not sure where to start off, this signature cocktail from A-club is definitely a heavy and intense start. The name sort of gives it away; you are bound to have some naughty energy in you after you gulp a couple mouthfuls of this drink. Naughty Energy (150k++) is a drink that we do not recommend to have for your last drink, because it will indeed be your last drink. The contents of this beast is Bacardi, Smirnoff, Johnny Walker Black Label, Jack Daniels, Jose Cuervo Tequila, Gordon’s Gin, Grenadine syrup, pepper mint green liquor, Blue Curacao, Sambuca and a splash of soda water to keep all this alcohol together. However, I do recommend this drink if you want to feel under the influence and you don’t want to drink liters of beer. Overall this cocktail doesn’t have a bad taste but you can definitely taste the alcohol, if you like a drink with an oomph to it, this cocktail is the one for you!

Here’s a scary thought: what if there was no more new music? Specifically, I mean new genres. Sure there’s new bands writing new songs, but when was the last time we had a real new genre of music come into existence? Once upon a time, blues music didn’t exist until a few dudes down in the delta invented it. Rock? Arguably an evolution of the blues but basically conceived in 1940 when Les Paul nailed a few electromagnets to his guitar in the shed. And so on and so forth until the amount of unexplored sonic terrain out there has become increasingly scarce. Luckily, people these days really are getting rather good at taking old genres and making them sound brilliant again, even if they may be from seemingly different universes. Case in point: the baggy scene of mid 80’s Madchester vs. two scruffy youths from the Sydney suburbs – namely, Jagwar Ma. Presumably still in nappies during the heyday of The Haçienda and Factory Records, you’d think it would be easy to write off Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield as attempting the kind of regurgitated pastiche of a long defunct golden age of music by people who just weren’t there. However, whether Tony Wilson would approve or not is a moot point, simply because Howlin couldn’t get any more baggy than if the album came with a free pair of flares and a strip of ‘happy tabs’ tucked in the pocket. Party starters “Uncertainty” and “The Throw” may be the closest we’ll get to seeing what the inside of Shaun Ryder’s brain looks like, while the acid rave juggernaught “Four” is straight out of an early 90s Oakenfold set. Mid way through there’s a slight shift to take in some groovy 60s scenery “That Loneliness” and “Come and Save Me” particularly, which play out like Primal Scream hosting a jam session in Austin Powers’ loft, but it’s not long before we’re back in Salford with the glow sticks and whistles again (“Exercise”, “Man I Need”). “Backwards Berlin” and “Somersault” signify the end of the party and the beginning of the come down, but the fun doesn’t have to stop there, just play it again from the start. And you will, because all that’s missing from this magical Manchester revival is a pair of maracas and a Bez. Dan Ashcroft is out to get you.

This device firms the muscles of the neck to diminish wrinkles and sagging skin. Using the same technology implemented by professional estheticians, dual electrode nodules built into each of the two included handheld units emit harmless, mild electrical micro currents that gently contract muscles in the neck to tighten the skin, resulting in a firm, lifted appearance. Unlike the superficial benefits provided by creams, the electrical stimulation penetrates deep into muscles to increase subcutaneous blood circulation and oxygenation, mitigating the muscular elasticity that causes skin to sag at the neck. Three treatment programs - skin enhancing, surface toning, and deep toning - combine with 10 intensity levels and a timer for customized control of each session. Best when using one program per day. www.hammacher.com $149.95 www.beatmag.com

art of the new age flock of Indonesian fashion forward artists pushing the limits is photographer and visual artist Angga Pratama. Born in Bandung with his teenage years spent in Indonesia, Pratama then moved to Holland and studied photography where he has since built himself an impressive portfolio both locally and internationally with his works being exhibited in various galleries around the globe since 2009. His works are bold, captivating and raw presenting a real sense of originality and an approach that pushes the boundaries combining fashion and art in the vogue way we want to see it. His photographs are the kind of works you see in New York, London and Paris and right now grace many magazines, campaigns and look books on the island. For the most part, Pratama’s current subjects are female models for fashion and candid snaps of the local hipster scene on the island from the street to bars and pool parties. Pratama is currently exhibiting in Swoon’s latest group exhibition ‘Space’; where artists explore the diverse relationship of space when creating art work. You can check it out at until August 28 at Swoon Gallery, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, No 35, Sanur.

A
Padang-Padang barrel with one minute and 40 seconds remaining to leapfrog from third place into the lead and win the 10th annual Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational.
Semadhi, a Pecatu (Bukit Peninsula) local, was absolutely ecstatic with his win in his 10th Rip Curl Cup appearance. “This win means so much to me, here at my home and in front of my family, and because of last year too”, said Semadhi. “In those final minutes I was trying to be patient, thinking that if I could lose in the final minutes like last year, I could also be the one to win in the last minute too. When that last set came in I said not this one, not this one, I gotta pick the right one. And then it was like a fairly tale come true when I heard the score and that I won.” Semahdi is currently studying to be a Hindu priest, and perhaps part of his studies is about patience as today it certainly paid off for the young man. Just a couple of weeks ago he was runner up in another ASC competition at Balangan Beach, and was bested by fellow Balinese goofyfooter Raditya Rondi, who held the lead in the final today until the final minutes. Putting on a very impressive performance today in his first trip to Bali and his first ever surf at PadangPadang was runner-up, 16-year old Jacob Willcox from Margaret River in West Australia. Willcox looked very comfortable in the often intimidating lineup, winning his first round heat by taking down locals Garut Widiarta and Marlon Gerber, besting Rizal Tandjung and Dede Suryana in the quarterfinals, and then Laurie Towner and Sean Peggs in the semifinals to get his finals berth. Rip Curl SEA CEO Jeff Anderson was all smiles after the trophy presentation, saying, “We had to get though some heats during round one, but from there it just got better and better. Mega has been in every contest…every single contest we’ve had at Padang-Padang. I talked to him after he won his semifinal heat and told him

this year,’ I just had the feeling he could do it. He did have a bit of a struggle in the final, but that last wave came and it was magic. The whole crowd was behind him, it was just perfect! I couldn’t be happier!”
The Rip Curl Cup has a longstanding tradition of running in only the best waves with the best tuberiders in the world, which at a wave like Padang Padang requires a lot of patience. Sunday was day 42 of the 45-day waiting period, and though there were lots of naysayers at the start of today’s event, by the end of the day Padang Padang proved once again that it could deliver the goods and retain its stature as Bali’s most sought after barrel riding experience. A quality field of 32 barrel-riding specialist invitees from Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, USA, Hawaii, Brazil and Indonesia arrived at Padang Padang beach this morning at daybreak to vie for the honour and privilege of hoisting the coveted Rip Curl Cup and having their name inscribed on it with the previous event champions. 2013 Rip Curl Cup Championship Final Results 1. Mega Semadhi (IND) 16.45 points 2. Jacob Willcox (AUS) 14.90 points 3. Raditya Rondi (IND) 14.90 points 4. Alik Rudiarta (IND) 11.90 points

into the tissue, pushing deep into the body with hands, fingers, and elbow with the treatment lasting 90 minutes. As a prelude to the massage, the therapist took you to a space within the spa with yoga mats where she stretched you before the massage.
Look:
Walking into Away Spa is like walking directly into the future. Passing the a calm reflecting pool on a footpath that leads you up to the spa lobby sets the mood and the interior of the spa itself brilliantly utilizes light with a combination of natural sources and LEDs that gently change color. The treatment rooms themselves offer a glimpse of the outside through a screened window with a single massage bed being the centerpiece of the entire experience. To say the designers were looking for a modern look would be an understatement; Away Spa’s overall motifs are light years ahead.
Feel:
Away Spa boasts five different menus. We don’t mean five different treatments, we mean five different menus with about ten different treatments in each, so, it’s safe to say there’s just about something for everyone. The menus include facials, eye treatments, manis, pedis, full packages just to name a few. Naturally, because we’re The Beat and chronically hungover, we selected the “Morning After” treatment. Ingredients:
The ingredients used for the treatment were varied and included herbal oils infused with fresh lime, basil, as well as mint and rosemary leaves. All products at the palace of pampering were freshly made out of 100 percent natural ingredients especially for Away Spa Bali.
Magic:
This spa is in the top tier of Bali spas and you can tell why. It’s the attention to the minutest of details that truly sets itself apart which is apparent at every step of the way, from check in all the way until the shower. The facilities are also excellent with a cold and hot tub along with a steam room. You can normally catch a few oversights here and there, but at Away Spa, everything was well designed and immaculately executed and for us, that was the magic. Jl. ACCOMMODATION
A peaceful and luxurious getaway from your normal life..
Location
Le Meridien is located right by the immaculate white sandy beaches of Jimbaran bay. The hotel is situated in the vicinity of many Balinese cultural attractions like Uluwatu temple - one of Bali’s most sacred sites. Le Meridien is about 10 kilometers from the shopping districts in Kuta and Seminyak and right next to the famed Jimbaran fish warungs.
Look
Each room has been designed creatively and is decked with a very modern contemporary feel with bright blue colours that represent the resort. In addition guests can get a sense of Indonesia-style with Batik-patterned headboards and bed-side hanging lamps inspired by fishing nets that also adorn the guest rooms. The bathroom is lavishly furnished with the finest Turkish marble. Each room has a private balcony where guests can enjoy the view to the lagoon pool – the resort’s main feature.
Atmosphere
The five-story resort is also designed as an environmentally friendly hotel and provides guests with chauffeured buggies so that they can move around the resort with ease. Various art installations are also being exhibited to elevate the appeal of this resort, such as photography by a German artist Markus Reugels in a collection called Liquid Art. Something that you notice when you walk in is the modern wooden decor that is consistent with the architectural theme of the resort, Aqua Marine.

ean-Marc runs Maria Magdelena’s music with an iron fist and would like to give you a piece of his mind…
So you’re quite passionate about music, tell us what you hate. Watching MTV nowadays has become quite hard, this Eurodance (they call it EDM) taking over everything is killing me... Tell us what’s awesome and why. Berlin and the impact of its uncalibrated music on the world, is a great thing soon enough even hipsters will get it. EDM is far from universal, break down the sounds according to the stereotypical types of folks who listen to them. Ever wonder next to a poster for an upcoming act and just wonder why anyone would go to it? I do all the time... What’s cracking at Maria Magdelena and why do you think it’s the absolute best place on the island? Maria Magdalena is the voice of a vision of the underground, with no compromise and absolute love for house music in its purest form... it’s a privilege to be able to program this place, we also get the best acts on the planet, without having the budget for it. DJs come and play for fun, money is secondary, this is what it should be... If you had an unlimited budget, what would the line up look like at your passion party? Nice one and here you go: Stuart Price AKA Jacques Lu Count (he produced two records for Madonna and nobody knows who he is). Matthew Johnson (Canadian and possibly the best live act on the planet). Black Coffee (South Africa’s biggest artist represents the rise of a nation through a very soulful deep house). And my hero Ewan Pearson. What do you think about the recent revelation that the US government is looking through your communications? My secret plan is to buy a DeLorean to get back in time and kill Guetta before music is compromised...
