Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2014 to all our readers and advertisers. What a good year 2013 was. It went way too fast as always but there were a lot memorable things going on. Not just in my personal life, which ran at a blistering speed of fun and games all over the country, but it was also all happening in the night and general life around Bali. Seminyak was pretty quiet as usual early week for most it, which continues to be a mystery, while the weekends were pumping at venues like Mint, Hu’u, Woo and later in the year, Townhouse. Jalan Dhyana Pura was banging away seven days a week though and maybe says a lot about the state of play generally in Seminyak. The alternative scene in town continues to be a driving force. Also a driving force is the hipster type crowd and their venues like Mantra, most of the Mexicans, and pop-up nights at places like the new Straw Hut. Pyramid came into its own as the place to go after hours too. Talking about after-hours, Kuta had its issues with noise and the local authorities with closing hours being hammered down to an early 3am and sometimes even 2am during the year. As we’ve said before in this editorial, there weren’t many people living down there in Kuta before tourism and nightlife came to town so it would be great to see them organize it amongst themselves to get it right for the future – things like noise pollution, street drunkenness and those painful taxis blocking the main road all night long still have to be addressed properly. With the combination of expensive drinks (caused in part by the ridiculous import taxes), bad press from methanol tainted cocktails (also caused in part by the ridiculous import taxes), and early closing times, one gets the feeling someone is trying to destroy tourism in Kuta. They have to remember there are plenty of options around the region in nightlife tourism―let’s not mess it up―just try to make it better. Life became easier in Bali this year with the new underpass and the toll road freeing up the traffic around town. Thank goodness for that and we look forward to more improvements coming soon, but we haven’t heard of any. Ha, let’s hope they do really come soon. SCOOP Fireworks in Kuta to be restricted on New Year’s Eve On New Year’s Eve this year, fireworks vendors will be banned from selling their wares on the roadside in Kuta. The move has been agreed by local community representatives and Kuta Police as a necessary safety measure because the streets become full to overflowing with foreign and domestic tourist revellers at that time, said Kuta subdistrict chief Gede Rai Wijaya. “If we catch any vendors operating where they shouldn’t, we’ll move them on and hand them over to the local community organization to deal with them”, Gede said. People wishing to see in the New Year with fireworks will be allowed to do so only at a designated zone on Kuta beach from 10 pm on December 31 till 2 am on January 1. The identification of the zone and its supervision will be carried out by the local community and security officials. Kuta Police chief, Commissioner Wayan Resa, also confirmed his support for the ban on the sale of fireworks without permission.

Fran Deeper can be described as Latin music personified. He was born in Palma, a city on the island of Mallorca (in case you don’t know, it is an island just east of Ibiza), Spain and is now residing in one of the Mexican states called Quintana Roo. As a young man, he had drawn a big interest in music with a heavy load of first-hand experiences in the Mallorca nightlife scene. In his twenties, he made a short stay trip to London before returning home and throwing parties for locals and foreigners across the island in an aim to promote his homeland.

Where you might have heard him His first gig as a bona fide DJ started in a far-flung place called Riviera Maya in Mexico. The place is still widely known today as a tourism district famous for its large scale all-inclusive resorts as well as many fine-dining restaurants. But we digress, he gained a residency at a local club called Arena Lounge and at a hotel named Clouds – thanks to his being a native Spanish speaker – while also playing gigs at several other venues as well from time to time. He regularly traveled to Spain in summer and was back by winter in Mexico. Deeper has been closely associated with three labels called Planet Mambo Club in Madrid and Involved Sounds in Ibiza as well as Secret James Records which manages his overseas stints and his tracks.

Why see him His very deep sound with broad strokes of nu-disco is always a pleasure to listen to. If you have not gotten a chance to go to Mallorca, Ibiza or Mexico, you should not miss his live performance at Pyramid Club on December 27 for the official launch party of Shisha Vapes.

Tiefschwarz which means deep black in German and they’re a German duo formed around 1997 in Stuttgart by two brothers Ali (Alexander) and Basti (Sebastian) Schwarz. Prior to forming the duo, they were already notable DJs in the early 90s, playing gigs at Ali’s now legendary clubs – ‘ON-U’ and ‘Red Dog’. Working closely with Peter Hoff, they released their first single entitled “Music” a year later and their debut studio album entitled Ral 9005 in 2000. The single was a success and was licensed to Classic Recordings in London and it prompted them to move to Berlin.

Where you might have heard them

Berlin, Germany’s electronic center, is where they truly thrived with the help of Jochen Schmalbach. Soon, they were playing at major venues across the world for a year, while also focusing on remixing tracks of other musicians like Masters at Work, Ultra Naté, Freaks, Missy Elliot, and of course Spektrum (“Kinda New”) which instantly became a worldwide hit. They closed the year 2005 by having their single “Isst” from the album Eat Books being voted as one of the best singles of the year by Trax and DJ Magazine. The award spurred them to exceed people’s expectations and take on the remixes of Depeche Mode’s “John the Revelator”, Madonna’s “Get Together”, Roxy Music’s “Rain Rain Rain” and Booka Shade’s “Darko”. Coming home, they and their French mate Arthur Velasquez founded their own label called ‘Souvenir’ in 2006. To date, Tiefschwarz has hold residencies at some of the world’s most famous places such as Fabric (London) and Watergate and Weekend (Berlin).

Oscillating between the many genres and pretty cool sounds, and thanks to their collaborations, music critics have always regarded Tiefschwarz at the top of their league. See them performing live at the second anniversary at Mint Club on December 28 and if you are feeling a bit of dejavu, yes, they were also playing at their first anniversary last year. Scarlett Etienne was born in Hong Kong to a US military family in 1986. Since she was a young lass, her tremendous love for music has grown through playing electric guitar in a band and later classical piano. However, everything seemed to change when she moved to New York at 18. Putting aside her classical music training, Scarlett delved into the NYC dance scene, inspired by local DJs such as Danny Tenaglia, Larry Tee, and Junior Vasquez. After some minor gigs, she received a residency position at the Sound Factory.

Where you might have heard her

Her early performances were so notable that international A-list DJs invited her to play overseas which landed her gigs in London such as at the Crosstown Rebels party and Out of Order at the End. She also had a spot on the roster of the prestigious Excession agency in the UK. Her partnership in production with Audiofly which let tracks like “Loose Lips Sync Ships” and “Earsex” urged her to excavate her dormant passion of piano and writing music. Scarlett, on top of her whirlwind schedule on decks around the globe, is also moonlighting as a singer/songwriter. Naturally multitalented, her decision in founding her own imprint, Scarlett Records in 2010, has seen success. Headlining fashion show stages is also another regular gig of hers, being part of the recent London Fashion Week. She has also remixed for uber-cool Parisian label Kitsuné, and for Lady Gaga’s producer DJ White Shadow.

Born in Jakarta in 1978 to Indonesian and Serbian parents, DJ Milinka is Indonesia’s premier female DJ. She lived in Holland for several years and did office and desk jobs before stumbling upon Paul Van Dyk’s tour DVD and eventually turning to dance music to fill the hole in her heart. Her first music source was only trance and progressive vinyl stuff she got from Amsterdam and now she is juggling her diverse sets of techno to deep progressive sounds combined with house, electro and progressive.

Where you might have heard her

She has received extensive media coverage since rising to the Top 10 finalist of Puteri Indonesia beauty pageant in 2004. Then, it was the meeting with Delizious Devina that prompted her to create a duo with DJ Devina called Electric Barbarellas, although it only lasted for a mere two years. Going solo, DJ Milinka started to devote more time on her own project called the HDM Project, assembling young budding local talents under her management’s umbrella. So far, she has already hit major venues across Asia and Europe including Ibiza where she opened Pete Tong’s Wonderland at Plastik Lounge and plans to expand the list. Currently she has also casted aside some of her precious time in organizing her own imprint, Ruler Rekordz, as well as heavily being involved in her own NGO and charity group called Milinka Love Movement. In addition to her loyal fan base formed through many gigs for big brands and revered fashion lines, she was also named by the Serbian and Indonesian governments to be their dance cultural ambassador and icon.

“Rob Keith”, Rodriguez is a New York Producer, international travelling DJ, international radio show host and percussionist. A seasoned performer and disc jockey, Rodriguez really entered the music scene in 2002 with his first track “Me and You”. 2003 saw Rodriguez collaborate with Gabriellis Kaye to create electronic group “3 Speaker High” with the duo making a bunch of billboard hit lists. Scott Matthews’ youthful looks belie his experience in Bali. Arriving twelve years ago to work first at Ku De Ta, Scott has chalked up some major successes in his time here. Taking on the venue at the front of Amadea Villas is another rung on the Australian’s ladder to success. “I have had to learn a lot of things going from a young chef to a proprietor. Taking financial responsibility for a venue is a big learning curve but it has meant that I can keep the cost to my guests down while still delivering a high quality dining experience,” he explains. “A lot of energy and time is put into training and I take on most of my kitchen staff as stewards and train them to become chefs. Consistency is the toughest challenge in Bali and I have found that putting the energy into training young chefs to work as I do not only improves the service but also gives something back to the community in terms of skill sharing.”

As the founding chef of Rumours, which became a runaway success under his stewardship, Scott has modeled his menu on past successes but also moved on as he has matured and been mentored along his course. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have worked on Jl. Oberoi, I was at Rumours for four years, so I have a good idea of what people in Seminyak expect, both tourists and locals. Rumours is still working well but I have moved on and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to do the same thing again. I still focus on quality, flavor, good presentation and value for money but Bistro Batu Kali is a different feel completely,â&#x20AC;? he laughs, relishing the memories of being a young chef who was more free to hang up his apron at the end of the night and hit the bar and the pool tables. As the main restaurant for the resort as well, Bistro Batu Kali serves an all day menu, starting with breakfast. Lunch and dinner feature classics like duck confit, breaded barramundi, grilled king prawns, fresh, lively salads and an Indonesian menu as well. There are also lighter menu choices and a tempting range of desserts.

The Bistro floats above Jl. Obeori, a step up from the pavement, providing a great streetscape and also enjoying fresh breezes. Softly lit by night, the central bar is the focus and two upstairs venues are reserved for parties and functions, including the spacious roof terrace boasting great views. At the end though, this is a restaurant that is serious about food. One of the signature dishes, the Duck Confit is a dish worthy of a much higher price tag than the 95k charged here. A meltingly soft piece of glistening duck with crisped skin is served on a bed of baby green beans with a citrus sauce aside a glorious mound of potatoes au gratin. A simple salad of pear, rocket and parmesan is a picture on the plate and king prawns grilled with a simple side are perfectly cooked, plump and loaded with flavor. Desserts come in all shapes and sizes including a stunning trio of brulees and a warm chocolate cake. The Australian tenderloin came out perfectly medium rare as requested and was easily pulled apart with juicy tenderness. To top things off, it’s wrapped in bacon. It also came with fries, mushroom pepper sauce and a side salad to balance out the meal.

Reeves plays an outcast half-breed warrior who joins the band of samurais and together they embark upon a journey filled with freaks, monsters, and other supernatural perils. The previews for this look absolutely awesome and the concept design is out of this world, but lets see if the director can pull it together to make a cohesive film.

As a photo archivist at the nearly defunct Life magazine, confined to his cubicle and desk, quiet and withdrawn Mitty spends nearly all day daydreaming about his adventurous fantasies and his love interest Cheryl (Kristen Wiig). Tired of merely daydreaming all day, Mitty sets on a real adventure around the globe in pursuit of an elusive photographer. The trailer for this movie alone was probably one of the best we’ve seen this year, if it does the movie justice, this will be one you’ll want to see in the cinema.

Rodney, on the other hand, just finished his time serving in Iraq and now he’s involved with one of the cruelest crime rings in the area. To save his brother, after their father dies, Russell takes the matter into his own hands, feeling that he is already a pretty crappy blue collar life and nothing else left to lose. This ensemble combined with critically-acclaimed director Scott Cooper might just be that dramatic thriller we’ve been waiting for this year.

A year on from Toy’s self-titled debut (the success of which had much to do with the patronage of Dalston ‘it’ band The Horrors), and we find the east London quintet still thrumming along the autobahn in fifth gear, only occasionally stopping off for the odd melodic detour. First impressions suggest that Join The Dots is indeed a sure footed progression, if only marginally so - Tom Dougal’s vocals remain an elusive whisper over the top of chugging Krautrock basslines and shiny synths, while euphoric guitar breaks pop up when you least expect them before whooshing off into the distance.

It’s a tricky album to pin down – mainly due to the tension between what they are good at (jangly melodies and sunbeam synths; “You Won’t Be The Same”, “To a Death Unknown”), and what they think they are good at (droning psych marathons that often plod on for almost 10 minutes; “Conductor”, “Fall Out of Love”).The latter is stylistically more in line with the Toy’s modus operanti of sprawling guitar effect experimentation, but it’s the former 80’s paisley underground style that lifts the album up from being too top-heavy with directionless dirges. If you only have time for one then let it be the title track - a distilled version of the entire album that flits back and forth between pounding drums, melodic verses and cerebral guitar reverb overdrive. Taken as a whole the effect is pleasantly dizzying, much like being in a room full of smoke and lasers, which, incidentally is exactly where much of Join The Dots was recorded. Sometimes the fog is a little too overwhelming, but just before it all gets too much, tracks like “Endlessly” provide a route through to the other side. It’s all very much an acquired taste, granted, and if the debut didn’t do much for you then neither will this, but if you like your psych then it doesn’t get much more out there than these guys.
