Welcome, welcome, this is the high season, folks. Make the most of it while you can. And for those that aren’t aware, this season is a little different to previous years since we have two major Indonesian public holidays coming together in the same week, making this the double whammy of all high seasons. The dates of Hari Merdeka (Indonesian Independence Day) and Idul Fitri (Islamic New Year) won’t line up like this for approximately another 32 years so you can see, as far as this holiday period goes, it’s an absolute cracker. While it’s easy to complain about the traffic, the amount of people everywhere, the noise and trash pollution, the push and shove of humanity at our door, let’s not forget that we have arrived at another pivotal weekend in the year. As I said above, we hope you can enjoy it while it’s here or maybe better to get the hell outta Dodge. So what’s on to keep the masses entertained in the next weeks? Big shows include one of the most anticipated events of the year, the illustrious White Party at KuDeTa in Petitenget with one of the members of the Deep Dish on the decks this Saturday night. Bintang Beer is bringing Indonesian rockers Gigi to Kuta beach for a special friendship concert that includes many of the band’s friends over the past 18 years – that’s on Saturday, August 25. The Ombak Bali film festival with an array of new and old surf flicks is back on from August 23 – 25 at La Plancha on Seminyak beach. New bar/ club Pyramid is holding a teaser weekend of sorts down on Dewi Sri By Pass, Kuta side on 24 and 25 Aug with loads of booze and goodie on offer. As always there are many shows and much entertainment on offer around town and to get the full information just flick through to the Main Stage and Regular event pages inside this here magazine. It’s going to be busy so keep your hat on. Don’t go too mad and drink in moderation when going out and better to take a taxi than drive your bike. We’ve seen too many accidents in this place caused by reckless driving under the influences of a big night out, so take it easy and we’ll see you in two weeks time.

Have Soul Will Surf Bethany Hamilton, a Hawaii born pro surfer, came out to Double Six beach on August 3 to join a surfing lesson for kids from Benih Harapan orphanage and YKPA street children shelter which was organized by the Soul Surf Bali Project and supported by Rip Curl. Hamilton, who turned her life around and became champion surfer after surviving a shark attack at 13, was in Bali after receiving a wild card in the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang. Last week she was on hand at Rip Curls School of Surf to inspire the young participants to never give up on their dream regardless of the barriers.

Good Vibrations Retro Classic All Single Fin’ Comp to Take Over Canggu Beach on August 25th In a celebration of all things classic in surfing, the second annual Good Vibrations Retro Classic surf competition will take over Canggu Beach in Bali on Saturday, August 25 for a great day of surfing with old and new friends, music and entertainment. A field of 48 surfers will be joining this second annual event at arguably Bali’s most popular wave playground, Canggu Beach. Their primary objective in this one-day completion organized and sponsored by Drifter Surf Shop, Mantra, and Insight, and with help from Green Rock, is to impress the judging panel and win the crown on the beach with their ability to master the single fin style surfboard. The surfers are only allowed to use either old classic boards or new versions of the old classics in the competition; the only stringent requirement is that the board must have no more than one fin. There will also be awards for the biggest drop, deepest barrel, most stylish turn, biggest wipeout, and any other crazy manoeuvres that may manifest themselves during this day of retro expression.

Sharam (Deep Dish) KU De Ta | Saturday 18 august

Roots: Sharam was born in Tehran, Iran, and in the global dance music arena, some might suggest Sharam is a god amongst men. With everything he has accomplished and contributed to music and this culture, few can argue. One half of the massive Deep Dish duo, Sharam covers more ground than most can dream of. The face behind Yoshitoshi recordings, he impacts all facets of this culture, playing gigs the world over, meanwhile finding the time to produce chart topping tracks that flow in and out of the mainstream and underground realms.

Sounds: Progressive House and Beyond.

Where You Might Have Heard Him

www.beatmag.com

Everywhere? No doubt that most everyone is familiar with the far reaching musical successes of Deep Dish. That success alone would be plenty to retire with and have a claim to fame. But neither of the dance floor dangerous duo have let up, and Sharam has continued to push the boundaries. Underground hits like “Don’t Say A Word” and “Texi” were solid productions in plenty of big DJ’s playlists, but more familiar might be his Top 20 material like “PATT (Party All The Time)”, “She Came Along” done with Kid Cudi, or his collaboration with Daniel Bedingfield “The One”.

Why See Him We shouldn’t have to make much of a pitch on this one, sorry. How many times do you get a chance to see someone this big, in Bali? Be there, experience it, thank them later.

Judika akasaka | FRIday 24 august Roots: Before hitting the big time with Indonesian Idol, Judika Sitohang had to go through countless singing competitions in Jakarta and his hometown in Brastagi North Sumatra. He has been singing since a young age and at one point, he formed a vocal group with his brother and friends and earned their living entertaining guests at a local hotel. He followed the stint with a first place in a provincial level singing competition before grabing third place at national level.

Sounds: Pop rock

Where You Might Have Heard Him Judika became a national sensation when he entered Indonesian Idol’s second season in 2005 and came out second. With much public support after the competition, Judika quickly got his career rolling with his solo album called Seri Cinta in 2005, followed by One in 2007. Judika’s new rise to fame also earned him a spot in two feature movies Si Jago Merah and Tarix Jabrix 2 which won him Best New Comer in 2009 Indonesian Movie Awards. Meanwhile his singing career shifted to higher gear when Ahmad Dhani, his long-time admirer, took Judika under his wing and made him the lead vocal in the band Mahadewa. Two well-received albums later Judika has become one of the country’s most accomplished male singers while keeping his fans content with more movie projects on the horizon.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him To have Ahmad Dhani, the most influential figure in Indonesian music reveals his admiration for you is really not an everyday thing. After winning second place, many, including Dhani, agreed that Judika was the real winner of the competition. Not only does he has a unique voice, Judika has also established himself as a performer on stage who knows how to please his audience.

Midnite Sleaze sky Dome | Friday 24 august

Roots: Hailing from way down under, Melbourne, this dynamic duo comprises of Duane Buriani-Gennai and Wayne Smith. They got together in 2008 and produced a fair amount of original tracks along with remixes and edits. Fate had more in store for them as 2009 became their breakout year with a number of awards and some big hits.

Sounds: House, tech house, and progressive

Where You Might Have Heard of them In 2009 the group exploded onto the world stage, first by winning the Stealth Records remix competition for the Transatlantin’s, made up of Roger Sanchez and DJ Oliver, hit single “I can’t live without music”. Three of their singles, “Body To This” with Belocca, “Twisted Disco” and “Useless” all became hits with huge airtime on some of the biggest radio programs such as Radio 1’s Essential Mix, Roger Sanchez’s Release Yourself, Fedde Le Grand, and Tiesto & Eddie Thoneick’s Radio FG.

www.beatmag.com

Why See them Carl Cox had this to say about Midnight Sleaze after hearing their remix of his single “The Player”, “Wow, wow, wow. What a mix. Booming bass line, tuff in your face house funk! Love it!” Roger Sanchez had this to say, “…on my recent tour of Australia I had Midnite Sleaze support me at a couple of my shows and those cats were rockin it!” Don’t just take our word for it…

Gigi “Friendship & Reunion Concert”, Halfway Kuta | saturday 25 august

Roots: The band was formed in 1994 by Aria Baron (guitar), Thomas Ramdhan (bass), Ronald Fristianto (drums), Dewa Budjana (guitars) and Armand Maulana (vocals). By the time they got together most of the original members were already established jazz and rock musicians who brought diverse musical influences from Phil Collins to John McLoughlin to the table.

Sounds: Rock

Where You Might Have seen them After a slow start with their first album Angan-angan which sold 100,000 copies, Gigi took it up a notch on their second album Dunia in 1995 which included the hit single “Janji”. Suddenly they were on top of the world with Indonesia Musik Emas crowning them as the best group in the country in 1995. In the years that followed, Gigi bagged several more awards from various events and by the time the band reached their fifth year in the business they toured Malaysia, Brunei and Japan.

www.beatmag.com

Why See them Gigi have always been known as one of the most technically skilled bands in Indonesia. After being in the business for so long, they have covered all types of music and still keep expanding their sounds individually and collectively. The band’s performance on the island this month featuring the latest members of Armand Maulana (vocals), Dewa Budjana (guitars), Thomas Ramdhan (bass) and newcomer Gusti Hendy (drums) is set to reflect their long illustrious journey that has lead to their current status as an elite rock band. At this gig they will be joined by some original members of the band and also share the stage with their celebrity rock friends including Ari Lasso and Naif etc. This is definitely one massive show not to be missed on the beach down in Kuta. Rp 20k gets you through the door, which also includes a can of Bintang beer. Not a bad deal at all...

Todd Terry HU’U bar | FRIday 31 august Roots: Before he became Todd the God, Terry was a struggling young DJ at New York parties in the early 80s who also spun hip-hop at school events and on the street. During that period Terry was already listening to Italian disco which prepared him for the sound of house that crossed the pond in mid 80s. It didn’t take a whole while for him to switch allegiance to the new sound and started producing tracks under various guises which are influential to the development of New York house. But wholesale change came when he packed his bag and flew east to get baptized in house music in England.

Sounds: House

www.beatmag.com

Where You Might Have Heard Him Terry immediately made good of his European sojourn. While back in New York he already had such masterpieces like “I’ll House You” with the Jungle Brothers, and “Weekend” under the Todd Terry Project, the British house explosion in the early 90’s gave him more solid gigs such as prestigious residency at London super club Ministry of Sound. From then on, Todd Terry became unstoppable. Besides the wealth of his own songs like the singles “Something Goin’ On” and “Keep on Jumping” which rode on the UK pop chart in 1996 and 1997 respectively he also mixed for the likes of Robert Plant, Sting, Björk, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Malcolm McLaren, Annie Lennox, and Technotronic.

Why See Him During his illustrious career, Todd Terry had mixed for the who’s who in the global music industry. He’s also known to be quite sensational behind the decks from which came the nickname “Todd the God”. So if the world is going to end this year like Mesoamerican Long Count calendar said it would, make sure you have received some Todd Terry in your life.

Shur-IKan MINT | SATURday 01 sEPT Roots: Shur-I-Kan is Tom Szirtes, a software engineer, a game developer by day, and a producer, DJ, keyboardist in a dance super group The Bays by night. He currently resides in his hometown of London. Szirtes has had great interest on both fields since childhood. After graduating first in his class in computer science, he continued to embrace his passion in music by playing jazz, funk, rock keyboards for local bands while building a solid career developing software for game companies at the same time. It comes as no surprise that he chose electronica to channel his ideas in music.

Sounds: Electronica

Where You Might Have Heard Him

www.beatmag.com

As Shur-I-Kan, the producer Szirtes is a long-time contributor to Freerange Records owned by fellow British deep house DJ/producer, Jimpster, with Advance (2001), Waypoints (2004) and several classic house EPs like Living Inside, I Want It, Special Powers, Future Fantasy and Letting You Down. Szertis has also laid out remixes for a number of celebrated artists including Akabu, Trackheadz, Miguel Migs, Fred Everything. The workaholic producer has also been picked up by top labels like Defect, Simple, NRK, Urban Torque, Physical Graffiti and Winding Road.

Why See Him With his wide range of style and an inclination to combine them all, Shur-I-Kan has been rightly considered as an up and coming deep tech house producer/DJ to watch. Perhaps with his reputation as producer, it’s easy to overlook the fact that Shur-I-Kan is also a formidable DJ who infuses excitement on dance floors from Dubai to Chicago.

S

he always believes in the power of the written word and started Ubud Writers and Readers Festival—the kind of festival that nobody in this country would even think of. First held in 2003, UWRF is now considered one of the biggest writers festivals in the world. Yes, in the world.

Homegrown & Well Known:

www.beatmag.com

Interview by Rudolf Dethu

Regarding the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, the next one is coming soon, are you happy with the progression? Our 2012 program is just about finished and I am truly excited by the range of extraordinary sessions and events that I know will thrill the audience. Jeni Caffin, festival program director, has done a

sterling job of creating festival magic once again. We are now in countdown mode, meaning our workload increases while the adrenalin kicks in. There’s excitement in the air! The festival was born from the Bali bombings in 2002. I was about to release my book Fragrant Rice at that time and had begun dealing with

090

publishers, publicists and festival directors. After the bombings, I started thinking about ways to heal Bali and figured the power of the written word would surely make a difference and give Ubud the economic boost it needed. We spent twelve gruelling months planning the first event and received wide acclaim when it was over. Since then, the festival has become one of Indonesia’s most significant cultural events. We have hosted Nobel laureates, Booker-Prize winners and this year, a Pulitzer-prize winner. All literary genres are included, with song-writers, such as Paul Kelly, being one of last year’s headliners. The selected themes are always Indonesian, often Balinese, and those that have current appeal. From the outside looking in, UWRF is such a beautiful event, very successful and of world class standard. I bet it’s not that easy. What have been your obstacles? Obstacles? Money of course! It’s exhausting hunting around for cash to help run the event and this year has been extremely difficult (what’s new?!). At this stage, we still don’t have a major cash sponsor. We run it on a shoe string and most people are surprised at the relatively small amount of money we actually need, considering the mammoth nature of the production. I have a core staff of nine who are supremely talented and hard-working and from now on, additional staff filter into the office to join the team. I am also truly lucky to be living in a such a supportive Balinese community, where everyone helps no matter what. And local businesses are extremely generous too. But lack of funds is the depressing part and holds us back a little. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy supports us now though, and of course, we are eternally grateful for the support of Tony and Maureen Wheeler of Lonely Planet fame. Last year you had Paul Kelly as UWRF’s biggest act. Who’s for this year? Can’t see it on your website. Or is it a secret? Hush hush. We are truly excited to be hosting one of the most interesting singer-songwriters of recent times. Stay tuned as its still hush hush but our

guest is a legend (Nick Cave) and has certainly made a huge contribution to music in Australia! After UWRF there’s the Bali Emerging Writers Festival. Uh oh. The BEWF is held in May and is focused purely on Indonesians. It is designed to offer emerging young authors the chance to discuss their work and network with fellow Indonesians. Interesting young presenters and talented authors often find themselves being featured in the BEWF. And if they are promising enough, they are then invited to appear in the UWRF in October. You just released a book. Can you share with us about it? Bali: The Food of My Island Home, is my latest cookbook. It is absolutely overflowing with glorious photos of food and Bali, with all my favourite recipes in between. Mark Roper is the photographer and he is one of Australia’s best. I will launch it during the 2012 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. There’s this cool session in a chic little place that you own, Bar Luna, called Bar Luna Lit Club (I wish I could go every week!). I seriously think people out there should appreciate this event more. Bar Luna is a charming, intimate small café that features literary events throughout the year. It is located right behind Nomads, off the [Ubud] main road. Many talented musicians appear and any interesting folk in town get dragged in to share their words, music, whatever, with the audience. We have had the most exceptional discussions and performances here. Musicians especially love it for its intimacy. Performances, discussions and our legendary poetry slam are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Friday evening is a night that focuses on the local community and Indonesian language. We have plans for more evenings. Any last nagging words? Just so you know, UWRF is not about making a profit. We are a not-for-profit and any surplus we make goes straight back into the next festival.

The thing about Bali dogs is that they hate to be cooped up and for the most part they are cowards. This is a bit of a nightmare for passing pedestrians and motor bike riders because they will come out of nowhere, barking and snarling, and will often chase you.

T www.beatmag.com

his is not conducive to a peaceful walk to the beach. It is even worse if you have a dog yourself.

I have had numerous Bali dogs, so I do know. A few of them, well one, was a great dog, some of the others, mostly ones that have been left on my doorstep have been awful scary dogs who often came home with bits missing, sharing ticks and ringworms with the family and scaring my friends. Some of them scared me, and I owned the dog.

I had one once that came on heat. She was an acquired one so we had no clue about her cycle. I woke one morning to the sounds of crying and barking, opened my door to find a group of more than twenty dogs ready to knock me down to get in. My female dog was as keen as the boys to get into the fray. The results were less than pretty and when the vet came over to look at the state of her enlarged uterus, she stated bluntly, “your dog has been gang raped. Hmm. I was quite new to dog owning at this stage and smartly had her de-sexed.

f e a t u r e

094

I now own a different breed of dog and while she does have a mad bark she doesn’t run snarling after people, in fact she prefers to bark from under a table or the sofa. We love to go for a walk on the beach, but it isn’t always pleasant. The other day I set out from my house, with my dog on a leash, for a little exercise on the beach. Having recently moved house, I am still trying to map the best route, one that allows me to encounter the smallest number of snarling dogs. I have yet to find it, and so far I have tried three different routes. I don’t live far from the beach but walking there is a real test of strength sometimes. I like dogs, wish them well and am happy if we can keep a dignified distance from each other, as you would with any other strangers. A kind word in passing, a wave perhaps. These guys don’t see it that way, unfortunately. Sometimes it is just a blur of movement out of the corner of your eye, sometimes it is more like a breath on the back of your ankles, but you can be sure that any walk of more than a hundred metres will bring you into contact with a dog that will freak you out. It isn’t rabies that I think about during these encounters, most of them appear to have owners and mostly are wearing collars. But where are the owners when the dog is chasing me down the gang I wonder? Some Balinese just look on and laugh.

www.beatmag.com

One owner of a dog near to my house told me that unfortunately I was passing through the dog’s territory. This is in a busy street filled with shops and restaurants, so I’m figuring this stunted dog probably has lots of marks – all day long and into the night. In fact I think the family owns the laundry; do their customers just drive by and throw their washing? Perhaps I’m a wimp, probably. A friend of mine is a dog lover and has two rescued animals. She walks them every day, twice a day sometimes, and has made friends with lots of the dogs in the neighborhood, always throwing them treats and such. She has been bitten three times. Clearly she doesn’t have the answer. I lived in a compound in the early days and the family dog scared the shit out of me every single day for the two years I lived there. It was black so at night you couldn’t see it coming till it was on top of you.

We’ve been discussing the best tactic to take in these situations. Picking up an imaginary rock and throwing it used to work, but I think they’ve grown wiser now. Plus the population seems to be growing again, enough to give you an injury if you keep stooping down to pick up fake rocks. I’m thinking of getting a walking stick. I know it will make them bark louder but hope it will deter further close encounters. However, it was not a Bali dog which ruined my walk the other day, well a few had a go but… rather it was a big furry golden retriever, who was playing on the beach. Determined to have sex with my dog it would not be deterred and followed us for a long way as I continued to chase it away like a mad woman. Eventually it got hold and mounted my dog. Whacking it with my flip flops had no effect, screaming like a banshee didn’t work either. The whole time I was thinking someone must own this dog, but where the hell are they? We did get free of it in time but it made me wonder why people can’t be more responsible for their own dogs. They say a Bali dog can’t be trained but letting it loose on the public to terrorise and chase people seems quite inconsiderate. The times I have seen accidents caused by these dogs doesn’t bear thinking about. A young schoolgirl almost drove her bicycle straight under a truck the other day when a dog chased her into the street. The Balinese are the first to explain to you that they are scared of dogs. So do they think the rest of us are not? Tourists in Sanur have complained recently about the dogs running loose, tourists are regularly terrorized by roaming dogs, and while I know a lot of responsible dog owners, I know plenty that simply open the door and let the dog run free. Free to bite me, to mount my dog, to scare me into a gutter or give me a bloody heart attack. Hello? [Comments? Go to beatmag.com or click on the QR Code]

My name is DJ Tony Montana. I am a regular fixture in Bali and I spend my summer months DJing on the impressionable island of Ibiza. Ibiza is the world leader for electronic dance music and draws some parallels with Bali. Here is my July report.

I

love July in Ibiza just as much as June. The island oozes quality, the weather is perfect, and the clubs kick into second and third gear. For me it’s time to do some serious clubbing before August arrives (when the clubs get too full). It’s also a time to expand the network, make new friends, and play new gigs. This month I played at Pacha for the first time.

www.beatmag.com

Music… This year, deep house has infected every genre (which I am very happy about as deep house is the “essence” of house). Nu-disco has crossed with deep house, as has soulful house, tech house, and even techno. Everything is deep, crisp, groovy and sassy! It’s a good year for music and my favorite track of the summer so far is NiCe7’s “Time to Get Physical”

Pacha

Excellent programming by Pacha and the best management team on the island make it a formidable club. Also the most glamorous with beyond hot women flooding the tables every night. The new DJ booth and sound system is also

The ibiza report winning support and is looking/sounding really good. This month I checked Luciano at “Vagabundos” (Sundays). Luciano is the most hyped DJ in Ibiza and is very good indeed. He really whips the club into shape with his fast-pitched, funkylatin tech house. Luciano is a tour de force and you will see and hear much more of him. His Vagabundos night plays to a big top theme (a circus vibe) and is colourful, fun and cool. Easily the best themed/produced/imagined party on the island. Well done Luciano. I also saw Dennis Ferrer at Defected Records (Saturdays), which was average. Dennis is a good DJ no doubt, but he was playing some tired old American house tracks and the American house sound is completely dead. We should talk about this for a moment as it’s important. I feel as though a great era is now firmly behind us. The era of American house and American DJs. They were all that mattered in the 90s, and even coming into the 21st century they still carried huge weight, but now, it is truly over. America now has very little to offer us and the new era belongs to Europe (and Australia). DJs/producers like Joris Voorn have taken the reigns and will lead us into the future for which the sound will be deep house and techno.

I’ve been going to We Love Sundays at Space and seen a bunch of DJs. Oxia, Deetron and Tale of Us all did good main room sets. On the terrace I saw Ame and Dixon who were too slow for me-too intelligent if there is such a thing. Then I went on a Thursday and checked the dual promotion of Kehakuma/Enter. Kehakuma on the terrace (courtesy of Nick Curly and friends) has been running for a few years now and the music policy is one of the best on the island. Deep, techy, very underground. I saw Edu Imberton who was very very good. A bright future for this lad. In the main room you have a brand new “conceptual” night by Richie Hawtin (I didn’t see him play but will at some point). I’ve read a bit about his ideas and philosophy and he’s an interesting chap. In a side room of space he had Francois Kevorkian playing in a new sake bar where they make incredible sake cocktails. There were only 50 people in there and it was a very cool. FK, sake cocktails and 50 people in a side room of Space equaled heaven! Lastly he had some Japanese dudes running a art installation in yet another room. It was decked out like a pink space lab and weird noises were going “bink”, “blonk” out the speakers. So what you do is install an application on your iPhone which gives you the Enter logo. When you stretch the logo out with your fingers a certain sound is triggered, sent back thru the system, and comes out the speakers. When your sound is played your iPhone flashes to let you know so. This was a super-cool and interactive thing to do in a club. Well done Richie for your vision!

definitely not for the faint hearted (the party doesn’t really get going until 4am or so). But it is very special and is considered the real deal. The Amnesia Terrace is a monster of a room (can hold 4,000 people) and there is no security inside. So what you have is a very “free” atmosphere there. The resulting frequency of the room is immense. The energy is off the charts. Everyone is seriously tuned in. Sunlight floods through the glass panels on the ceiling. Loco Dice gets into full swing from around 4am onwards and by 7am he is just tearing the room to pieces. It is a sight to behold. I watch the room in deep fascination. You cannot imagine the action this room has seen over the years. It is the mother ship .. The hedonists nirvana. Hallowed ground. Sacred.

Sven Vath is one of my DJ gods of the month because he is just that. A god. A man who has given our culture so much. He really rocks the “main room” (wrongly named as it’s half the size of the terrace). But Loco Dice, holy sheeeeeet! It’s difficult to say in words why this man is such

DC10

Blu Marlin & Lio

Been to these venues a few times but they are very bourgeois. Still we all love a bit of posing occasionally! Saw the P-Brothers live at Blu Marlin who were very good.

Amnesia

Ok, we need to talk about Amnesia for a bit here and Mr Loco Dice. Listen up! Every Tuesday morning Amnesia hosts Sven Vaths Cocoon party (for which Loco Dice is playing the Terrace almost every week). It’s an institution, and the favourite of many islanders and all the real discerning clubbers. It is serious stuff and

an incredible DJ but I will say this: For me Amnesia Terrace is the ultimate dance floor. Number one in the world and to drive the terrace is a serious feat for which many DJs fail. There are only a few who can really “drive” it and I think Loco is the best of them all. I’ve spent two Tuesday mornings with Loco Dice this month and they were, and will be, the best thing I witnessed this year. I also went to the opening of Marco Carola’s new “Music On” night (Fridays), but I didn’t stay to see the party out and can’t report too much on it. But Marco is another “king of the terrace” and I hope to see him properly before the season is out. Ok, that’s it for this month. A long report. Next month’s will be smaller as in August the clubbing slows down for all the islanders. www.tonymontana.co.uk

Been a few times to Circa Loco (Mondays) and made it to their anniversary. I saw DJ Cirollo who is one of the longest serving DC10 residents and is excellent. Emotional, intelligent house-a real journey taker. I love this guy! The sound system is still unpleasantly loud though (my earplugs come with me everywhere).

KuDeTa Presents Vol. 2: Grand Theft Audio

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

The

inherent problem with the kind of music that is loosely categorised under the banner of ‘chillout’ is that most of it is not really produced to be shoved under a microscope. The second volume of tunes compiled by Jim Breese and musical director BTK at KuDeTa is a great example of the kind of music that is intended, nay, required to blend into the background and remain steadfastly inoffensive at your standard cocktail party or Bali sunset bliss out. I’d like to point out right away though that this is no bad thing, I mean could you really envisage Iggy or Metallica serenading your sunset canapés? Imagine the coup d’état amongst the too-cool-for-school hipsters usually found at Bali’s trendy beach bars if the DJ dared stray from the mood. I like this kind of music. Of course I do. Everyone does, and it’s for precisely this reason; it fits the mood in the same way that thrash metal does when a mosh-pit is in full swing. Soft Rocks’ “Little Lights” kicks off proceedings with an atmospheric bit of spacey dub, ably voiced with the honeyed vocals of Nesreen Shah, and on “Shake” the Drop Out Orchestra mix up a fresh sounding sample of the Baggy swagger of Primal Scream’s classic “Loaded”. Poolside’s “Take Me Home” continues the Indie theme with a nicely built party starter brimming with the exhilaration of a memorable night on the tiles, before The Love Birds and Flight Facilities complete the transition from dusk to dark. So Volume 2 in the KDT series does basically for Bali what the Chilled Ibiza series did for the Balearics – a soundtrack for a dreamy day at the beach where the sea breeze and a cool cocktail are never far away from your sun lounger. It’s all great stuff, but kind of like eating luxury vanilla ice cream – enjoyable at the time but ultimately doesn’t stand out against all the other flavours that are out there. Dan Ashcroft

The Light Therapy Hair Removal System

Similar to technology used in high-end salons, this is the light-based system that removes unwanted hair and prevents regrowth for up to six months. The unit’s xenon lamp emits pulses of light that are absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle where it is converted into heat. The heat disables the hair’s growth mechanism, causing the unwanted hair to fall out and preventing new hair from emerging. Intended for use only on light to medium skin color and naturally black or brown hair, the device was clinically tested by medical professionals and participants had 47.8% fewer hairs six months after just three treatments. About the size of an electric shaver, the device glides easily along the skin and fits into tight areas along the underarms and thighs. The included light cartridge provides up to three hair removal treatments on the arms, chest, and legs (not for use on the head or face). www.hammacher.com $249.95

Men played an important role in the fine art scene long ago. In the renaissance period, artists were mad about the male form, they even used men to model they depictions of women. But these days, men have gone out of favor with so many artists choosing to explore the fairer sex. Three artists, Pranoto, August 27 – September 11 Kerry Pendergrast, and Masaya Kurobe have focused more on the masculine form and are holding an exhibition titled “It’s Raining Men”. This exhibition goes all out to bring about a balance and show paintings and drawings by these three artists where the subject is men, exclusively. The exhibition runs through September 11 at Bali Mystique Hotel, Jl. Petitenget No. 2000xxx, Seminyak/Kerobokan, Bali. T: 4 730 465

W H O S E CANVAS

Nathan Kostechko & Arielle Pytka

A

tattoo artist, Nathan Kostechko and his partner Arielle Pytka are an American couple out from Venice Beach who have become world nomads and enjoy adventure as it comes.

Nathan started tattooing in June of 2003 in Southern California and these days he tattoos mostly on the road, guest spotting at different shops. Finally, fate lead them across the pacific and to Bali, where they washed up some weeks ago with only a backpack, a board and no intentions other than to surf and do some art.

www.beatmag.com

Arriving in Bali, the couple explored ways to make a show; Nate paints for his tattoo inspiration on canvas while Arielle opts for color and texture overlaid with icons. Nate is more about skulls, traditional in tattoos, black, white, yet symbolic. This time, their exhibition called “N/A which is being held at Deus Gallery is instantly recognizable as the initials of their first name, but is also instantly recognizable as the acronym for Not Applicable. The exhibition runs through mid August at Deus Gallery, Jl. Batu Mejan No.8, Canggu, Bali. T: 217 10 76

Padma Spa

at Plataran Bali

So perfectly authentic, Padma Spa at Plataran Bali is like a slice of glorious tradition.

PLATARAN BALI RESORT & SPA Jalan Pengubugan, Banjar Silayukti, Kerobokan - Kuta Bali 80361 T. +62 361 411 388 +62 361 844 6012 F. +62 361 8446029

Look:

The Plataran group takes great pains to reflect the classical traditions in each of their properties. Padma Spa at Platran Bali is a perfect reflection of the Balinese spa culture, simple and sublime.Tranquil and beautiful the resort traverses a river, and the spa is located over a wooden bridge in a magnificent park-like garden. The building is old red brick with lots of faded wood and antiques. Everything about it says Bali in a way that most other properties can only aspire to.

Feel:

I opted for their signature treatment, Padma Khayangan Ritual. The two hour treatment begins with a foot scrub. A meditative massage follows but first the scene is set with a moment of mediation with a singing bowl. Bringing all the elements of the experience into harmony. A wonderful massage with Lotus oil is followed with a lotus scrub to exfoliate and cleanse the skin. Hot stones are then used to massage the body again and the stones are placed on the shakra points while the body is wrapped in hot towels to allow the scrub nutrients to be absorbed. The ritual ends with a flower bath.

Ingredients:

Lulur and their signature lotus oil and scrub are wonderfully fragrant and induce a sense of calm and contain valuable nutrients for the skin. Warm green tea detoxes and a fresh fruit and banana leaf wrap are among the indigenous Balinese treatments on offer.

Magic:

www.beatmag.com

Treatments at Padma Spa are a world away from the more urban spa rituals. The atmospheric spa offers a real sense of Bali, in the place, the music, the therapies and the staff. This is a slice of heaven you will long remember.

The 3-star Bliss Wayan Hotel in Legian is the perfect starting point to immerse yourself in the exuberance of Kuta.

Location

A sandy beach, waves, nightly entertainment, and hangout spots; the Kuta district where Bliss Wayan Hotel is located, offers excitement unlike anywhere else on the island. The hotel is a short walk away from Legian street where all the action takes place. Moreover it only takes about 20-minute drive from the airport so you will save time and energy to hit the beach right away.

Look

The underlying themes at Bliss Wayan hotel are beach, surf and plain old fun, based on a madeup profile of a fun-loving 20 something surfer named Wayan. The idea translates to the use of surfboards and bright happy colors as important elements in the dĂŠcor. Bright colors combined with efficient design also create a clean, airy and spacious feel about the establishment.

Features

There are six types of rooms at Bliss Wayan. Kids would love the Lagoon rooms which provide direct access to the floater pool in the back of the hotel. Next to the pool is the sandy sitting area that replicates the sensation of outdoor lounging in a more reserved environment. Just a few steps away from the sandy lounge lies Bombura Resto n’ Bar that serves western and Asian cuisines as well as a wide selection of beverages.

ith a miracle wave in the dying seconds of the final, California’s Chris Ward pigdogs his way to a Padang Padang title. With barely a minute remaining in the ninth annual Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang, California’s Chris Ward scored a perfect 10 backside barrel to leapfrog into first place and win the “Ultimate Tuberiding Contest” on Thursday, besting Bali’s Mega Semadhi (2nd place), Java’s Dede Suryana (3rd), and Australia’s Ry Craike (4th) in pumping six-foot tubes at Padang Padang. Ward was on fire all day as he battled his way through arguably the most talented field of tuberiding specialists ever assembled for a contest, including 2009 Padang Cup champ Jamie O’Brien (Haw), defending champion Lee Wilson (Bali), local legend Rizal Tanjung (Bali), Ozzie Wright (Aus), and the event’s first-ever female competitor, Bethany Hamilton (Haw). Needing an 8.25 to take the lead with mere seconds left in the Final, Ward said he knew his miracle perfect 10 backside barrel sealed him the Padang Cup title as soon as he got spit out in the channel and heard the cheers erupt from the cliffs and in the channel. Padang Padang local surfer Mega Semadhi had put on a tube-riding clinic in each heat he surfed during the day, drawing massive cheers from his local fans gathered on Padang Padang Beach and lining the cliffs above Bali’s most infamous tube machine. The 23-year-old scored several 9-point barrels on his run to the Final, where he netted the day’s first perfect 10 with his first wave, a

deep double barrel ride. Semadhi held the lead for 49 minutes of the 50 minute final, only to get nipped by Ward, who somehow exited an impossibly deep barrel on his backside to score a perfect 10 of his own and snatch the win from Semadhi. After being crowned Rip Curl Cup champion and receiving his winner’s check for Rp 60 million (over $6,000 USD), Ward surprised everyone when he got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend. She said yes, which sent the hundreds of fans gathered on the beach into a cheering frenzy. “I asked her before we came here, and I got her family’s blessing,” Ward said. “I bought the ring and was thinking, how should I propose? I told myself if I won this contest I was gonna do this right here on the stage. So I guess it was meant to be.” 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational Results: Championship Final 1st Chris Ward (USA) 17.50 2nd Mega Semadhi (Bali) 15.60 3rd Ry Craike (Aus) 9.25 4th Dede Suryana (Java) 9.20 Semi Finals Semi 1: Chris Ward (USA) 16.70, Ry Craike (Aus) 16.00, Mustofa Jeksen (Bali) 13.50, Rizal Tanjung (Bali) 7.90 Semi 2: Mega Semadhi (Bali) 16.75, Dede Suryana (Java) 15.25, Jamie O’Brien (Haw) 11.50, Garut Widiarta (Bali) 9.75 Photos courtesy of ripcurl.com
