The other night we went for a quick trip down to central Kuta and after telling my cohorts that the traffic situation was all clear nowadays through town since Beachwalk opened and changed the way the traffic flows, we arrived right smack into the middle of a traffic jam of unprecedented proportions and were stuck there for over an hour. And it was only 1.30am and half way down Legian. Eventually, we edged our way slowly towards the Poppies Lane intersection surrounded by taxis and a few hapless passenger vehicles, until we got to the monument area and a line of parked taxis effectively blocking the road to traffic. More than this, it became clear as to what was actually going on, as all the clubs and bars were closed and had been since 2am, discharging literally thousands of patrons out onto the street in all states of inebriation at the same time. After some investigation, we discovered this “closing bars at 2am” is a new ruling from the police in anticipation of the coming tenth anniversary of the first Bali Bomb. All well and good, except the fact that at 2am to 3am every night, the whole of central Kuta is now chaos. We believe the changes made by the downtown bars over the past months have been positive in turning the music down on the street and keeping the noise well inside the clubs after 3am, but this latest ruling defies logic. With the natural exiting of patrons during the night from say 1am to 4am the flow of traffic and people is manageable and coherent, but with this mass early closure it becomes a bottleneck and with that comes chaos. And let’s not forget the threat of terrorism; they’ve just made it easier for the bad guys. All the bars and patrons are up in arms, tourism is suffering, and the “shoot yourself in the foot policies” of the authorities are driving us mad again. Let’s all hope the ruling’s been reversed before you read this.

A big clean-up involving the business community and local stake holders was held within South Kuta beach recently in conjunction with the Clean Up the World Weekend 2012. The event is part of a global campaign Clean Up the World which encourages and supports local communities around the world to fix, clean, and conserve their environment. To advance the initiative, the South Kuta Beach Business Association, along with school children, government organizations, and beach vendors gathered on Friday September 14, to clean-up along Jalan Kartika Plaza and the neighbourhood’s beach front area. The message echoed was to respect the environment for long-term sustainability of the tourism industry and the community all together.

role assignment The ROLE Foundation has set themselves up for the huge task of attaining a sustainable future for islands, oceans and coastal communities through healthy environmental practices. It’s an uphill battle on two fronts; advancing sound environmental practice and providing education for community involved. The foundation sees a strong link between the two, and both deserve equal yet separate attentions. In that regard the Role Foundation has divided its resources into Bali Wise, which oversees literacy and education programs for disadvantaged women and girls, and the existing Island Sustainability Center that promotes environmental sustainability for Bali. To find out more about the subject go to www.rolefoundation.org

Punnu Wasu laughing Buddha bar | friDAY 28 sept
Roots
Punnu Wasu has been living the life of Kirtan art since he was a small child growing up in Hyderabad, India. The art of Kirtan, an ancient Indian devotional mantra, was passed down to Wasu from his father and has been in his family for generations. Wasu began studying the art since he was five years old. At the age of ten he graduated to Hindustani classical music while learning to play the harmonium. Around the same time he began touring India with his father.
Sound
Spiritual, Bhakti rock
Where you might have heard him
Before reaching 20, Wasu had already toured with a renowned spiritual guru, Bhai Chatur Singh Ji. After moving to the Philippines at 21 he formed a band, Sing India, which performed world music and Bollywood soundtracks for celebrities and high ranking officials. He also performed regularly at international events including Bhakti Fest, Bali Spirit Festival, Moksha South Africa, and Oneness University with spiritual guru Sri Amma Bhagavan. Currently Wasu calls Bali his home and consistently appears at local events.
www.beatmag.com
Why see him
Punnu Wasu and his band is a proponent a hybrid between Kirtan, Bhajan -another ancient devotional musical art, and contemporary rock beats called Bhakti rock. He continues trotting the globe to realize his musical mission and singing for a growing audience of Kirtan and Bhakti rock. With his talent and experience Wasu’s next performance in Ubud is certain to put out an energized rendition of an ancient Eastern art form.

Tritonal Sky Dome | Saturday 29 sept
Roots
Based in perhaps the greatest state in all of America and probably the world, Tritonal have put down their roots in Austin, Texas. The lone star state residing duo consisting of Dave Reed and Chad Cisneros met online from opposite ends of the US. They entered the dance scene in 2007 and have been on an accelerated path to dance music success starting with when their first hit “Piercing Quiet” was voted best track by listeners of Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance radio show.
Sound
Trance… in a progressive sort of way.
Where you might have heard him
They have over 75 productions under their belts, their music is out there for the masses. In 2011, the duo decided to do a bit of traveling and began a world tour that saw them behind the decks in North America, Russia, Asia, the U.K, and Australia. Perhaps their best known tracks are “Essence of Kea”, “Crash Into Reason”, “Let Solitude,” “Piercing Quiet,” and “Cloudbase”. There accolades include The Future Favorite on A State of Trance, The Webvote Winner on Trance Around The World, and gold #1 twice on Ferry Corsten’s Countdown.
www.beatmag.com
Why see him
Aparently they’ve spawned a mini culture of fans called Tritonians and if you’re into uplifting sets, you might be one and not even know it. Check out their set at Sky Dome which is sure to be a blast.

Christian Karlsson Hu’u | Friday 5 oct
Roots:
Long before taking the center stage in the world’s dance pop scene with Miike Snow, Christian Lars Karlsson, the Swedish born producer, spent most of his teenage years toiling away with sounds and mixes in the studio. He had stints in Swedish pop groups including Goldmine who opened for the Fugees but later gained success as part of production and songwriting team with his childhood friend Pontus Winnberg as Bloodshy & Avant. The duo enjoyed success writing and producing for the likes of Britney Spears, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Sky Ferreira. In 2007 the pair met Andrew Wyatt, and the idea about a band that was to be known later as Miike Snow surfaced.
Sounds:
Indie pop, electro pop
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard him
With Pontus Winnberg in Bloodshy & Avant, Karlsson began his rise to fame producing Christina Milian’s 2001 hit singles “AM to PM,” and “When You Look at Me” which reached number three in UK Singles Chart. A year later the pair got together with Britney Spears for her album In the Zone which increased their stock even higher when the resulting single “Toxic” won Grammy for best dance recording and 2005 ASCAP award for most performed song. Karlsson and Winnberg also came up with “How High” and “Like it or Not” for Madonna’s 2005 album Confessions on the Dance Floor. With Miike Snow, Karlsson has had two albums under his belt and won the 2011 European Border Breakers Awards.
Why see him
Miike Snow, Karlsson’s latest project, is an explosive new band perhaps best known for their hit “Animal”. Christian Karlsson will be behind the decks as a DJ at Hu’u Bar and if his hits are any indication of how his DJ sets are, expect some very catchy dance floor beats.

ungu boshe | Friday 5 oct Roots:
Ungu was formed in 1996 but the band had to wait until 2002 for their first studio album Laguku (My Song) to be released. The name Ungu, which means purple, represents an amalgam of the member’s diverse backgrounds. Makki Omar Parikesit (bass), for instance, had been playing music in the US for some time and even opened for John Mellencamp once before co-founding Ungu in Jakarta. Meanwhile Pasha, or Sigit Purnomo Syamsudin Said, the front man, had a brief stint as a model and TV actor before joining the band in 1998. The rest of the current line-up were either playing for other outfits or working as technicians for the band before being asked to replace the original members.
Sounds: Pop rock
Where you might have heard them
www.beatmag.com
If you are a fan of Indonesian soap operas you won’t forget ‘Bayang Semu’, Ungu’s breakthrough single from their first album, which was the main theme of the highly popular Indonesian soap opera ABG, in 2002. The album titled Laguku (My song) was a success and reached platinum two years later. By then the band had already released their second album Tempat Terindah (The Most Beautiful Place) which fared even better with 80,000 copies sold in the first four months. From that point the only place to go for the boys was the top. The third album, released in 2005, went double platinum and that turned out to be just a warm up. In 2006 they found the faith with their first religiousthemed album that coincided with the Ramadhan holiday. Sure enough, 150,000 copies of Surgamu (Your Heaven) were sold in just ten days. To this day Ungu has not been seen coming back down to earth.
Why see them
Along with Peter Pan and Samson, Ungu was at the center of the late Indonesian pop explosion in the first half of the 2000s. While others seem to be on the way down now, Ungu doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The band has got it all; exceptional musicality in Makki, and charisma in Pasha that will guarantee to captivate many a longtime fan and pop music enthusiasts alike. See them live at Boshe’s anniversary next week.

People can be categorized and generalized into specific subcultures (emo, hipster, goth, etc), if you had categorize yourself, what subculture would you fall into?
Samurai (just slapping the six strings).
If you could kill one musician and wipe out said musicians’ very existence from the face of the planet and all living memory, who would it be?
I kill no one.
Other than performing at the Hard Rock, any big plans for Bali?
Nice massage.
On a scale from 1-11, how hard will your show be?
1.00000000000000000000000000000 000000000000001
Craziest thing you’ve seen on stage?
A drummer who wears swim shorts.
You were once credited under the Miyabi moniker when you joined Due le Quartz, have you ever met the other Miyabi?
Sorry, I don’t know who you are talking about.
You’re looking at these questions on a screen of some sort, what is directly on the left of the screen?
My kids’ faces on the desktop.
www.beatmag.com
Hi Mr. Miyavi, how are you doing today?
How do you feel about the escalating territorial dispute between Japan and China over the Senkaku islands?
Cool as always, just got done with mixing my new album Samurai Sessions Vol.1 tonight!
All bulls**t. I dont get why we have to fight each other as Asians over an island that nobody lives in... No more hate.

We have seen our friend and local hero, Christina Iskander, mobilise Bali women through her Diva group to raise funds for myriad causes including YPAC, the handicapped children’s home, a little girl named Anni, who is severely malnourished and dehydrated as well as breast cancer awareness. She is currently raising money to purchase a bus for the children’s centre by way of the Iskandar Challenge where she is being sponsored to lose 12 kilos over 15 weeks with the help of the director of Motion, a health and fitness centre. We have also seen one of the YPAC Children, Nengah, travel to London to compete in the Paralympics as a weight lifter, she didn’t get gold but she already holds a world record in her class and is yet another local hero. Last year saw local midwife, Robin Lim, awarded CNN Hero of the year for her work with natural childbirth for local women. There are so many others. Asana Viebeke Lengkong who pioneered the “I’m An Angel” charity which supports numerous programs for local people. She especially comes to mind as the Bali bombing 10th anniversary approaches as she was given the role of restoring the Kuta and legian community in the wake of the tragedy. Recently a conversation with Marg Barrie who owns the Magg shops, revealed the work that
she is doing in supporting education programs for underprivileged children. She explains she has been too busy working to really talk about her work but she has affected the lives of thousands of Balinese children. Just quietly. There are plenty of men who are also doing great work in the community but it is often women who bring a level of emotion to their causes, which empowers and inspires others to join them, the spirit of nurturing is innate to these women. Jodie O’Shea’s founder, Alison Chester, who together with her husband founded a thriving orphanage for children at risk is also in the news with the anniversary of the Bali bombing. Together with a group of her friends, including Marg Barrie, she rushed to Sanglah hospital in the hours after the bombing and it was there that she met Jodie O’Shea, a young Australian woman who died soon after she was evacuated. Her strength and bravery inspired Alison to do all the things she wanted to do but never found time for. There are so many women who are quietly working behind the scenes, with the mentally ill, the handicapped, the poor, women at risk, communities which need help and are never acknowledged and don’t seek recognition. Every day there is a reason to celebrate women and now is as good a time as any to say thank you, well done, keep going. These women have sacrificed their time and often their own money to make our world better. Hooray. You can see Helen Reddy live at a charity dinner at Anantara’s SOS on October 19, 2012. Limited seating so be quick.

Homegrown & Well Known:
RAI BANGSAWAN Interview by Rudolf Dethu Bali coffee has not yet received the respect it deserves. Very few people are aware of how unique and distinctive Bali coffee is — to drink imported coffee is considered much cooler. Rai Bangsawan is making people understand about our indigenous coffee culture, based on the best of local wisdom.
T
www.beatmag.com
his is not about nationalism. This is about a guy who believes that Bali coffee is in many ways superior to imported coffees. I like Bali coffee a lot. I drink it at least twice a day, every single day. Your new coffee-rendezvous place in Kerobokan, Kopi Kultur, has made me appreciate Bali coffee even more. Is this your goal, to reintroduce Bali coffee to the public? It all started from anxiety, worrying, how—status wise—Bali coffee has dropped in prominence in recent times. Ayip, Suarnatha and I, we had regular and evolving discussions about this
degradation. We shared the same concerns: local coffee should be “successful”, especially in its own home. It should get a certain respect— especially as Bali coffee is not just another type of coffee. As you must know, Bali coffee is unique, and can compete in the global markets as long as it is handled cleverly; from cultivation, land execution, proper harvest and post-harvest processes, sophisticated marketing tactics, and so on. The other thing that makes it great is that Bali coffee grows on a volcanic island. That factor alone already creates distinctive taste and flavour.
I was introduced to coffee from an early age. I was four at the time, I remember my grandfather, almost every single morning shared a sip or so of his coffee with me. I became hooked. I even love smelling coffee flowers. As a kid I felt that coffee has this mysterious aspect. While in my village, morning time means the village is deliciously infected by the aroma of coffee. My knowledge about coffee comes mostly from self learning. It started from watching my grandfather taking care of his coffee plants till post processing. Even though I don’t fully follow the technique he used back then, it has definitely enriched and inspired me. From that point on I began to learn how to prepare the land, understand how coffee grows, and learn how to be a proper coffee farmer. I have also learnt about Bali coffee culture, how to polish my sense of taste and smell, and about the ritual and technique of mixing and brewing. I then went to Jakarta to upgrade my coffee knowledge further, and studied to be a qualified barista. How’s the public reaction with your Bali Coffee reintroduction? Is Kopi Kultur now an exquisite “coffee retreat” as you planned? Is it effective in making people totally wake up and (re)smell the coffee? I’m blown away. I almost can’t believe how beautiful the public reaction has been. We never really set an ambitious target. We just wanted to reintroduce Bali coffee so it gets more respect by actively interacting with the guests, socialising the coffee with warm gestures, giving each guest a personal experience, because to me, to us at Kopi Kultur, drinking coffee is a private ritual. We offer coffee crafting rather than relying too much on hi-tech coffee machines. This is what we call “Theatre of Coffee”. People seem to really like it. On a lighter note, from all this coffee-craze there’s some enlightening news: a lot of the
Have you continued with your farming business? My farming business and Kopi Kultur are related to each other. We first educate the farmers to create the best products from their soil, and the next step is to distribute those good quality products to the market. This is the challenge for us, so that people out there can also understand that Balinese coffee is valuable. Kopi Kultur has to be able to integrate a village product, maintain quality and incorporate modern, attractive packaging so it becomes a premium product. Kopi Kultur is like a hip place to showcase the products from the farmers, a fashionable hangout place to convince the city people that the products from the village are worth giving a chance. If this is successful, the farmers will also be convinced that they are doing the right thing (and forget their dreams to work in hotels or in the tourism industry with very small salaries). Hopefully it will also make them hesitate to sell their land.

Have you always been interested in coffee?
visitors who were apprehensive to drink coffee due to gastric issues, have dared drink coffee again after we guaranteed that our coffee is healthy, and will not cause problems with stomach ulcers.
Kopi Kultur takes up just a small part of a massive property, which is Wisnu Open Space. Not long from now Wisnu Open Space will operate its organic farming field out the back of our cafe. Hopefully this can be a positive model, a live lab and experiment centre for urban farming, developing organic vegetables and fruit. Now let’s get personal, what’s your favourite coffee other than your own? Kopi Bali Arabica Tamblingan a.k.a. coffee from the lost city which actually originated from Ethiopia. Any last nagging words? Be very careful, dark roast coffee is dangerous for your body. It’s unhealthy due to the sugar inside the green beans. When overheated, they transform into carcinogens, substances which cause cancer. Be knowledgeable, coffee when processed correctly is perfect in helping you to stay healthy due to very high levels of antioxidants.
www.beatmag.com
So the three of us agreed to reintroduce and try to rebrand Bali coffee via Kopi Kultur. To make sure that appreciation from the public would be achieved, I spent some time with guests asking about what kind of coffee they want to try, what kind of coffee they would pick, and why. And also chatted to see how much they could recognise the uniqueness of Bali coffee.

Visual SOUNDZ Aside from talking about himself in the third person, Rob Soundz knows a thing or two about video and The Beat had a word with him about his thoughts on the matter. Explain who exactly is Rob Soundz, the man, the concept, and the myth.
www.beatmag.com
Introducing a new dimension in the versatility of DJ/VJ-ing: Indonesian-based Dutch international DJ Rob Soundz. Featured before in edition 316, this all-round music & video performer has 11 years of experience and expertise under his belt, and prides himself in being a relative underdog performer focusing on sheer audio and video entertainment value for his crowds. Rob is constantly innovating within his consistently popular area of work, whether he is performing as a solo artist covering all music genres, thus catering to every imaginable type of venue, or whether he is collaborating with other DJ’s, VJ’s and musicians. However, the music video shows are performed together with DJ/ VJ Patrick under the act name Double Dutch. Double Dutch was formed in 2011. It’s a DJ/ VJ duo act that aims to provide more intense and versatile entertainment to
venues and crowds by adding other senses to shows, mainly high definition video, and by incorporating lots of surprising, creative twists and turns, creating numerous “wow” moments. Becoming already well-known around Bali with weekly shows, Double Dutch will soon expand to other Indonesian islands..... and beyond. You believe video is the future, please explain. The advancement of computer technology in the past decade now allows artists to express their creativity without having to invest heavily in technology. A lot of DJs nowadays choose to benefit from this by producing their own music. Others prefer to experiment with sound effects. Another option is adding video, or even a combination of the above. Of all of these, we believe video adds the most entertainment value, as it involves a second sense (sight) to the show.
How exactly would you like to incorporate video into your sets? We start with the music: we carefully choose songs, both instrumental and acapella and from now and before, and create creative, unique remixes and mash-ups. Often we use multiple acapellas backto-back in just a few minutes of music. Then we acquire videoclips of both original songs and remakes (a lot of classic songs have been remade over past decade) and video´s of live performances of the songs that are used in the music, and have our video editor creatively add a continuous video stream to the music. The music and video clips are then mixed live at the venue, using special DJ & VJ software that is able to play this type of file. The result is best justified in venues with big and/or multiple video screens. Mixing live is more fun and authentic and enables us to adjust the music and video’s on the spot depending on the crowd. This is an essential of being a good artist. Imagine that money and technological innovations were not an issue, describe your ultimate audio visual fest. Making video in 3D is our next innovative step. We are currently exploring possibilities of incorporating 3D to the video’s, making the experience of a Double Dutch show even more up-close and intense. We’d have a completely 3three dimensional video show, making people feel like they are part of the scene in the video where artists are dancing and singing right in front of them. We’d also add other senses to the show like smell and touch: there would be devices capable of creating any scent throughout the venue at any given moment. Other devices would be able to quickly adjust the temperature and humidity in the venue according to the atmosphere in the music and video currently being played. Finally, if the venue is indoor, the ceiling would be one giant display capable of showing any indoor or outdoor scene, like snowfall, clear blue skies, a starry night, giant planes flying overhead, etc.
So far Cocoon, Hu’u bar, Bali Beach Shack and Moo Moo’s caught our attention the most when it comes to video and visuals. They very regularly have shows with video that matches the music, and the results speak for themselves – word-of-mouth became their most effective marketing tool and they are consistently busy during video events. Describe what makes a video sync up to the particular mood and feel of a track.
093
f e a t u r e
Any video show in 2012 should be HD (highdefinition) and widescreen. It is just today’s standard. All Double Dutch concepts include continuous high definition video.
With all these clubs competing against each other in Bali, trying to put on the best show, who do you think is doing the best visually speaking?
In contrast to visuals or visual effects, video really complements the music as it shows the artist actually singing the vocals being heard. People watching are able to see the dancing moves, the outfits, the looks, the body language and the facial expressions of the vocalist. From up close in high definition (if available). It is obvious that this creates a more intense experience, especially if the length of the vocals are chosen correctly - sometimes just the first verse and chorus, sometimes the full track. Any upcoming shows you want to talk about? At the moment the Double Dutch show “Time capsule” is increasingly in demand. It is a music and video show focusing on retro music (from the 60’ to the 90’s) with a twist. It can be experienced every Saturday night in Moo Moo’s, every Sunday night in Bali Beach Shack and once a month on a Thursday night at Cocoon (retro-night). Our newest and most innovating concept is called “Elements”. It is innovating because it is a highspeed combination of unique music mash-ups with instrumentals and vocals from now and before, completed with HD video as outlined before. Elements is a special concept, and not suitable for every venue. To reach its full potential, there should be at least one huge video screen that is easily visible from most parts of the venue. So far Elements could be experienced in Evo (formerly Base Camp), Adora Soul destination, Hu’u Bar and Cocoon.
We are awaiting confirmation of new showdates for Elements. Stay tuned on the Double Dutch website (www. doubledutch.dj) and Facebook page!
www.beatmag.com
By far not all people that visit clubs are into dancing. Our observations have showed that a continuous video show that matches the music and has surprising twists and turns keeps people that are not into dancing entertained, more than just showing a visuals or visual effects show.

The XX Coexist
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
F
ollowing an album as accomplished as 2009’s eponymous and Mercury prize winning debut was never going to be an easy task for London-based trio The XX – the prestigious award for best British album notorious for being an albatross around the neck for musicians who struggle to produce a follow up that reaches their prior Mercury glory. Recording the “difficult second album” is a daunting task for most, but it’s a challenge that Oliver Sim, Romy Madley-Croft and Jamie Smith appear to have more than achieved with Coexist -the subtle, almost imperceptible evolution becoming more and more apparent the further you submerge yourself into it. End result: they’ve stripped away a few more layers and have been even more sparing with their instrumentation to find a purer sound that is as much about the spaces in between as it is anything else. The lo-fi resonances and brooding atmosphere means that listening to Coexist is a distinctly personal experience, Sim and Croft echoing sentiments of forlorn yearning like a pair of estranged lovers who’ve been deliberately kept apart in separate studios to record their vocals. “We used to be closer than this/is it something you miss?” they lament on “Chained”. “If someone believed me/They would be as in love with you as I am” adds Croft on “Angels”, voice crackling with emotion (someone give them a hug for god’s sake). The closest we get to shifting up tempo is the throbbing “Swept Away” and groovy tension of “Tides”, but neither are allowed to go for a second longer than necessary.
It’s music that lives in a hazy nocturnal world where it’s eternally 3am on deserted and drizzly streets. You’ll find it played at parties in immaculately clean apartments awash with zinc kitchen surfaces and brushed alloy. Listen closely and there’ll probably be snatches of Coexist backing moody TV commercials for grey German cars (or bizarrely sound tracking a general election TV campaign), but despite all that, the warmth between Sim and Croft shines through like sunrays in a cloudy sky. Yes it’s flawed in places and may not seem like much of a step forward, but mark my words; Coexist will infiltrate your consciousness like no other album this year. Dan Ashcroft

If you were a character in a movie, try to imagine a scene just like the odd title above! Definitely doesn’t make any sense, but that’s what a movie is sometimes – illogical. And again, if you care too much on logical sense of a movie’s story, you must be too serious. Having an alive-and-talking Teddy bear as your soulmate? Possible to survive a whole world of ferocious zombies with only a team? Can you ride a bicycle so fearless and fast as to escape speeding cars? Check-in reality at the door and go to www.21cineplex.com or your local DVD store.

From the director and writing team of the hilariously well-known “Family Guy” series, Seth MacFarlane brings his boundary-pushing sense of humor to the big screen with a live CGI-animated talking Teddy Bear. It’s a story with a ton of funny scenes and a dose of good drama about friendship and love. Put up your expectations, bring along your own teddy bear to watch Ted together.

The primary venue for the Oakley World Pro Junior Championships will be the high-performance righthander at Keramas rivermouth, with a secondary venue of Echo Beach, Canggu. Anwar says he feels equally confident competing in the reefbreak rights of Keramas and the beachbreak peaks of Canggu, having surfed both spots countless times while living in Bali for several years, before moving to his current home in Palm Beach, Australia to finish high school.
I
ndonesian surfing sensation Oney Anwar has been awarded one of five international wildcards into the ASP’s 2012 Oakley World Pro Junior Championship event, to be held in Bali, October 6-17. For the first time in ASP history, both the Men’s and Women’s 2012 ASP World Junior Champions will be crowned in Bali at the prestigious event.
www.beatmag.com
Nineteen-year-old Anwar, who hails from the remote village of Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, is the only Indonesian surfer to be awarded one of the five initial wildcards. It means he will bypass the local trials, where a field of Indonesia’s best junior surfers will battle it out for the final two remaining spots in the main event. Anwar finished 9th on the 2012 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series, with his best finish coming at the 2012 Billabong Pro in Japan, a four-star open World Qualifier where he was runner-up to Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau. Only the top four rated men and top two rated women surfers from the Australasian regional series qualify for the chance to compete for the ASP World Junior Title in Bali. However, given Anwar’s status as the highest rated junior surfer from Indonesia, the ASP elected to give him one of the five coveted wildcard spots.
“I love surfing Keramas, it’s one of my favorite waves in Bali,” Anwar said. “You can get sick barrels out there and it also has a massive turn section. I think it’s great to have the comp at Keramas because everyone can show how good they are in really good waves. It’s going to be a massive challenge.” In 2010, Anwar became the first-ever Indonesian surfer to win an ASP Pro Jr. event when he claimed the Dripping Wet Pro Junior at South Curl Curl Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches. Now he has his sights set on becoming the first-ever Indonesian surfer to win an ASP World Pro Junior title. Past ASP World Junior Champions read like a laundry list of surfing greats, including: Jack Freestone (AUS) 2010, Laura Enever (AUS) 2009, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) 2007, Jordy Smith (ZAF) 2006, Adriano De Souza (BRA) 2003, Joel Parkinson (AUS) 2001 and 1999, and Andy Irons (HAW) 1998. “The list of surfers who have won this event is so impressive,” Anwar said. “To even have my name mentioned in the same sentence with those surfers would be like a dream come true.” You can follow Oney Anwar’s preparation for the ASP’s World Pro Junior Championships by checking out his blog: oneyanwar.tumblr.com

The Memory Card to DVD Photo Converter
This is the converter that transfers images straight from a digital still or video camera to a blank DVD, saving users the hassle of connecting it to a computer. When a blank DVD or CD and a standard memory card are inserted into the device, the touch of a button copies files within minutes (burn speeds up to 8X for DVDs and 24X for CDs). If the data size exceeds the disc space, the device automatically divides files among multiple discs. The LCD screen displays the capacity, burn speed, and other pertinent details about memory cards and discs. Weighing only half a pound and as small as a slice of bread, the device can easily be toted on vacation so shutterbugs can back up or share photos before they get home. The converter also transfers files between discs and USB devices, or between a master and a blank disc. For use with DVD-R/RW or CD-R/ RW. www.hammacher.com US$199.95

An airy bamboo building offers a range of traditional therapies.
www.beatmag.com
Cool is a study in bamboo with a cathedral-like ceiling in the treatment rooms upstairs. Making good use of bamboo in all its guises, the building is surrounded by windows, which allow a cooling breeze through the treatment rooms. Situated just off Jalan Oberoi, opposite Grocer and Grind, it is pleasantly tucked away and offers an affordable range of traditional beauty and spa treatments.
Offering traditional Balinese massage and hot stone massage, all of Cool’s treatments can be taken for an hour or 90 minutes, depending on time and budget. Aromatherapy oils are incorporated into the treatments offering a “Cool” therapeutic effect. Salon treatments are popular here, ranging from cream baths to braiding, facials, manicure and pedicure and the day of our visit, there were quite a few mothers and daughters enjoying a spa day.
The menu lists a range of locally produced natural oils, scrubs and hair treatments in addition to L’Oreal hair products. The emphasis is on natural and local where possible, lending this spa a traditional feel that matches the ambience.
The use of bamboo at Cool creates an impressive and natural feeling within the spa. The cathedrallike soaring ceilings and expansive windows offer great views, as well as a refreshing natural airflow, which make spending time at this local salon a treat. The prices are very affordable which means almost everyone can afford to sample a spa package or enjoy traditional beauty treatments. Cool Spa and Salon Jl. KINTAMANI HOUSE
A sanctuary with everything you need for a restful vacation Location
Kintamani House is located in Tibubeneng which was once a sleepy village of farmers and fishermen in North Kuta district about 30 minutes from the airport. The area has seen some development lately yet has maintained a balance between the old farming culture and the growing international community who have come to the area for the quiet atmosphere that is lacking in more urban Legian or Seminyak.
www.beatmag.com
Look
Kintamani house consists of three tropical minimalist buildings surrounded by luscious landscapes on a sloping 2000 square meter chunk of land. Natural furnishing accentuates the traditional Balinese concept throughout the complex. Altogether the complex is an adept application of Balinese spirituality where structure and the natural environment complement each other.
Atmosphere
The surrounding rice fields can easily be seen from the main area where guests can spend most of their time. Sometimes one can smell the salt in the air as Kintamani House is situated in close
proximity to the nice and quiet Canggu beach. The compound is hidden at the end of a narrow street, some distance away from the main road for a maximum peace and privacy. There is enough open space in Kintamani House to hold functions or just to be in solitude amidst the serene natural environment.
Features
Kintamani House features four deluxe bedrooms, three in the main building and one in a separate quarter, each with its own open garden bathrooms. One of the highlights of Kintamani House is a 6x16 meters swimming pool at the center of the complex with an open view to a wide spread of rice fields around the compound. Personal butlers and staff are available during the day while at night, security guards are standing by to care for the guests.
