It was most definitely Christina Iskandar’s week last week not only winning the best dressed woman prize of a necklace made from 69 carats of African emeralds and 18-carat gold beads from jewellers Feltz & De at the recent Canggu Club Melbourne Cup Day, but then going on to achieving her goal of losing over 15 kgs and raising enough money for a local handicapped home to buy a new minivan complete with hydraulic hoist. These underprivileged kids will be able to use this new vehicle in many ways. Praise goes to everyone involved in that feat and there were many. Not just the people pledging money to the cause but also the backup crew supporting Christina along the way. Christina is one person always ready with a warm smile and gracious welcome to just about anyone she comes across and is always a pleasure to be around. We take our collective hats off to her for her warm spirit and her community achievements. There is more info regarding the Iskandar Challenge inside this edition’s scoop section. You may have noticed that the ThereThen section inside has changed quite a bit over the past edition or two. We thought it was more relevant to add more photos to each event as most people only look at the photos anyway and after all, a picture of course says a thousand words in any case. Any complaints let us know at editor@ beatmag.com. The heat. Hasn’t it been hot lately? Maybe, over the past few weeks, hotter than ever before and I just had a quick check on my outdoor porch and the thermometer is nudging 30 degrees and it’s already 10.30pm. There is no word on the arrival of the wet season and checking the Perth weather, which is always a good barometer on local heat waves, it appears to be warming up again down there this weekend. If there’s no pool in sight, get a bucket to wash yourself down. We are supposed to be coming into the slowest part of the year as we move closer to the madness of Christmas/New Year, but you wouldn’t know it by what’s happening on the streets during the day around town. There are still packs of tourists roaming around looking very sweaty as they forage for the low-season bargains, or down the beach escaping the sweltering heat. As there are so many flights coming to Bali now and at this time of year plenty of flight and accommodation packages on offer, I am beginning to think Low Season is now a thing of the past. Enjoy your next two weeks on our scorching island. Bring on the rains.
Please send contributions, letters, etc to editor@beatmag.com The opinions expressed in any article or advertisement are those of the writer or advertiser and not necessarily those of the Beat. The Beat crew takes no responsiblity for anyone caught out in the photos.

Iskandar reveals more

than expected
Local expat with a big heart, Christina Iskandar not only proved at Warisan restaurant it was possible to lose 20kgs over a 12+ week period, but also that the Seminyak community can pull together to actually make a difference for the less fortunate people around them. Over 200 million Rupiah was raised over the 12 weeks Christina was dieting and exercising her way to the originally required 15kg weight loss for charity with a large chunk of that sum coming on the night at the Iskandar Challenge Reveal Event at Warisan. The event attracted over 100 people for dinner. The monies raised will be used to acquire a new mini-van to transport handicapped kids from YPAC - Yayasan Pembinaan Anak Cacat or the Bali Foundation for Development of Disabled Children. As she said in her closing words at the show, “What the mind can perceive the mind can achieve.” We will be waiting to see what she next perceives for the kids of Bali.
Want to know your future? Mrs. Tammy will reveal it to you on Fridays starting from 11am to 7pm at Mc Buds, Grand Istana Rama Hotel. Mrs. Tammy will read your fortune based on different techniques such as palm reading, tarot cards, tarot stick and coin, and tarot marbles. For 150k per person, you can have certain menu items and a drink to enjoy while you get your fortune revealed to you.

SLANK HARD ROCK CAFE | WEDNESday 28 nov
Roots
Slank began in the early 80s as the Cikini Stone Complex (CSC), a bunch of high school kids who refused to play any other music than that of the Rolling Stones, who was and still are their main inspiration. Unfortunately, after a while the formula had kept them from moving forward creatively. Some of the CSC members eventually got bored from performing the same repertoire over and over again and they disbanded after a couple of years together. Some of the original members reemerged in 1983 as Slank, after their slacker disposition, in a small residential area in south Jakarta called Potlot. Slank’s first line up was Kaka (vocals), Pay (guitars), Bongky Marcel (bass), Indra Qadarsih (keyboards), and Bimbim (drums).
Sounds
Rock ‘n roll, blues.
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard them
After taking a lot of rejection from recording labels, Slank finally got the break they sought with their debut album, Suit Suit...hehehe in 1990 featuring hit singles “Memang” and “Maafkan”. The album was quickly accepted by Indonesian music fans as a breath of fresh air and became a massive success for the band. The follow up effort, 1991’s Kampungan cemented their reputation as one of Indonesia’s leading rock bands. Together, they issued three more albums together: Piss, Generasi Biru, and Minoritas. During this period Slank won Best Selling Albums from BASF Indonesia for their first three albums, went multiplatinum on Generasi Biru and topped Indonesian charts several times. In 2005 they were inducted as the first MTV Indonesia icon. But personal problems and creative difference forced a major change in the band’s line up. In 2007 Slank became Kaka (vocals), Bimbim (Drum), Abdee (Guitars), Ivanka (Bass), Ridho (Guitars). Despite initial worries, the band rose to a new height. They toured the US, Europe and several Asian countries in 2009 establishing themselves as bonafide superstars.
Why see THEM
After being in the business for three decades Slank still rocks as hard as they ever have. In Indonesia there is none bigger than these boys. So unless you have a strange aversion to what many regard as the best rock ‘n roll band in Indonesia, Slank are the ones you want to see.

Doctor Dru sos supper club | wednesday 28 nov
Roots
Growing up in Hamburg, Germany, Martino Doncello, the man who would become Doctor Dru, has always been fascinated with beats and soul music. He started out banging his mother pots and pans as a child before graduating into a full on drummer who at the height of his game toured with R. Kelly around Europe. Unfortunately Doctor Dru’s other youthful fascination, skateboarding, got in a way of his career. A skateboarding accident ended his professional drumming days, but as the story goes, they couldn’t keep him off drums, albeit a drum machine. He began playing around with the mixer, honing his production skills while DJing at parties and clubs.
Sounds
House, techno
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard him
Doctor Dru reemerged after the accident as a producer for numerous artists including his favorite funk meister, Bootsy Collins. In 2010 the Doctor established his own label, Jeudi Records, and released his “Ooh Gosh!” EP, which debuted on the top five on dance charts for weeks. The following year saw Doctor Dru churning out more hits like “Juicy Fruit”, the summer 2011 anthem from Black Jukebox, as well as Adana Twins’ “Anymore” EP under Baalsaal Records. At this point Doctor Dru had built quite a reputation through his works with various artists until his recent track “The Voice of Dru” put him in the limelight as it shot to number one on Beatport Deep House Chart within five days after being released before eventually made the Beatport Top 10.
Why see him
The release of “The Voice of Dru” shows that the chart-topping producer/ DJ knows how to fill dance floors with his energetic deep house. If you need to get your fix of pulsating synth bass lines and thumping house drums, this is the one doctor you want to see.

flume The 1O1 LEGIAN and Boshe | THURSday 29 nov
Roots
Coming from a mysterious little know Australian town called “Sydney”, Flume began his musical journey well over seven years ago. When he was 13 and known as Harley Streten, he entered a musical production program that he found in a cereal box which totally beats those plastic toys most kids get. Soon he was being inspired by a variety of different sounds and scenes adding a bassy sound to his mix.
Sound
Electronic, indie
Where you might have heard of him
Flume has been on the airwaves throughout Australia and Triple J morning host Zan Rowe named his track “Sleepless” as her “catch of the day”. He’s appeared in magazines such as XLR8R, Lodown Magazine, and Electronic Beats. His aforementioned “Sleepless” track has amassed almost a million hits on Youtube and was number one on the iTunes Australia Electronic Chart for several weeks and remained in the top ten for a few months after. He has been confirmed for all the Parklife shows and has gigged Splendour in the Grass and Vivid Live. He has recently released an eponymous album earlier this November.
www.beatmag.com
Why see him
Our analytical algorithm for predicting DJ fame and fortune places Flume at the midstream point where he’s rapidly getting popular, but hasn’t quite broken that threshold into ultra famous international icon status. It’s quite interesting seeing a DJ at this point in his career, he’s hot, but how long can it last? He has to have the hunger, the hunger to become a star. Plus, if you’re a hipster, you can always say that you got to see Flume before he was übur popular. Catch him during early in the evening at the 101 Legian and later on at Boshe.

Andra and The Backbone akasaka | friday 30 nov
Roots
Andra and the Back Bone began life as a side project of Andra Junaidi Ramadhan (guitar) of Dewa 19 fame. In 2006 when Dewa 19 was on a break, Andra got together with Stevie Morley Item, an additional guitarist for Dewa 19, to work on a few of his songs. The lineup was complete when they found Dedy Lisan, who at that time worked as a journalist, to sing for the band. It didn’t take long for them to get signed and in 2007 their self titled debut album came out.
Sound
Pop rock
Where you might have heard of them
The debut album with its singles “Musnah” and “Sempurna” turned Andra and The Backbone into superstars in their own right. The eponymous album and its first single was rewarded with a 2008 AMI award for the Best Rock Duo/ Collaboration/ Group. They followed this achievement with Season 2 in 2008, Faith, Hope and Love in 2010, and IV in 2012.
www.beatmag.com
Why see them
Since their sophomore album Andra and The Backbone have been hailed as a breath of fresh air in the Indonesian pop scene with their soothing melodies and contemplative lyrics. In each of their four albums to date Ramadhan, Item and Lisan used their diverse musical backgrounds to venture into scores of fresh and classy pop numbers. Andra and The Backbone epitomize contemporary Indonesian pop rock at its best.

Strip Steve woo bar | saturday 01 dec Roots
It all started when Bordeaux boy Strip Steve was still a skater kid in the 90s, listening to California punk and creating music with his turntables. As the latter grew on him, Steve began to dig deeper into the Chicago sound while absorbing the diversity in house and techno. He then incorporated elements like Chicago, house classics, the latest techno, early 90’s rave, and 12” electronic into his DJ set. He got his name from a Garbage Pail Kids card.
Sounds
House, techno.
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard him
Steve got recruited by the Boyznoize label at 18 and got his first career break in the EP “Skip School” out when he was 20. Right after that demands for gigs across Europe came flooding in, followed by his first Australian tour. Steve’s sound and remixes also caught a lot of attention around the industry. About that same time he moved to Berlin to focus on his musical development. A year later his hard work came to fruition. He began playing gigs in Tokyo, Sydney, and Miami on a regular basis. He took part in the Boyz Noize Power Tour in 2009 and enjoyed even wider exposure across Europe, part of it due to the release of his second EP “Delta Disco” and numerous remixes he did for the likes of The Faint (BNR), G.L.O.V.E.S. (Bang Gang), Das Glow (Institubes), Adam Sparkle & Dave P (Satellite of Love). In 2011 Steve climbed the Beatport techno chart with his third EP “Calcium”, which was being played by Carl Craig, Errorsmith, and Laurent Garnier, among others. 2012 is a big year for young Steve; he released his debut album Micro Mega to a very positive response worldwide.
Why see him
Strip Steve is certainly on a steady rise to become a mega star in the dance music scene. He has distinguished himself from the bunch with a flair for diversity and a commitment to bring fun to the dance floor.

Diplo hu’u bar | thursday 06 dec
Roots
Diplo is Thomas Westley Penz a Tupelo, Mississippi born DJ, who grew up in Florida with quite an active imagination about dinosaurs living in the surrounding swamp. Dinosaurs and being influenced by Miami Bass later in his teens proved to play a big part in Penz’ career. At one point he made his way to Japan where he put together a demo for Big Dada in the UK. Penz’ early beats were enough to prompt the label to sign him right away. He then flew back to The States and settled down in Philadelphia where he met DJ Low Budget. Together they started the Hooked on Hollerphonix party series that got him noticed.
Sounds
Electronic, hip hop, electronic house, dubstep
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard him
During his Hollerphonix period Penz and Low Budget produced some mix tapes that put their names on the map. One such tape, Never Scared made it to New York Times’ Top Ten Albums of 2003. Soon after, Penz followed on his contract with Big Dada with his first EP Epistemology Suite, using the moniker Diplodocus out of his childhood obsession with dinosaurs. He released his critically acclaimed debut album Florida in 2004, and a series of creative collaborations with UK singer M.I.A followed which established his reputation as a producer. Diplo went to work on various projects with some of the most celebrated names in the industry including Shakira, Robyn, Kid Cudi, Bruno Mars, No Doubt and Snoop Lion.
Why see him
Today Diplo is widely recognized for his vision as a producer and the range of musical knowhow at his disposal. Yet he is also an acclaimed DJ that will rock any dance floors, and does that to perfection as proved by the legendary Hollerphonix parties he organized during his early years.

Mild Seven - BLUEMOTION “Capture The Angels” Photography Competition
After submitting their shots, the participants were treated with a live music performance from Dialog Dini Hari and games at Ayucious Café. The event targeted young urban people who are eager to explore new subjects which were in line with the smooth tasting, dynamic,
sophisticated and progressive character of MILD SEVEN. Following the Capture the Angels Photography Competition on November 16, was a similar event targeting young automotive fans with Transform Your Ride into a Blue Car Contest which took place at Adora Super Club. Participants were required to modify their cars to match the color and character of the MILD SEVEN brand. The events came to a conclusion on November 17 with the Tokyo Urbanation party at Adora Super Club. The party was basically inspired by urban Tokyo, featuring performances by international DJs, announcement of winners for millions of Rupiah in cash prizes and a chance to date Maxim girls. The program was supported by Darwis Triadi School of Photography, Radio Oz, and Hot Import Nights.

fter achieving success with a string of events that has attracted young urbananites in Jakarta, MILD SEVEN - Blue Motion came to Bali to host a similar Tokyo Urbanation themed party. It had a slight variation with the inclusion of Capture the Angels Photography Competition for young photography enthusiasts in Bali supported by Darwis Triadi School of Photography. For the challenge, participants competed in snapping images of the Blue Angels in sexy poses at exotic locations around Denpasar and Kuta, like Ayucious in Renon, Kuta Beachwalk and the Renon monument.

Reminiscing. O
nce upon a time, not so long ago, there was only one international phone in Bali and it was at the airport. Communications were rather clunky and long winded and involved going to one of a few business centres to communicate by fax, or leave messages for friends who didn’t have a phone. Few did. What brought early expats to Bali, the allure of being disconnected from the western world and living a kind of cowboy existence, could easily seem far decades in the past but in fact Bali was still like this less than twenty years ago.
The internet and mobile phones have changed Bali radically in a relatively short time and while there are so many things to be said for progress, it can make your head spin thinking about how quickly it has transformed the once sleepy island into a mini metropolis.
www.beatmag.com
Along with technology has come a surge in the foreign population. It is now possible of course to run your business anywhere in the world, from the comfort of your air-conditioned office looking out over coconut trees and pools, and for some the elusive sea. New communities have sprung up everywhere and a new generation of Balinese have embraced the new, more affluent lifestyle. While dad might have been riding a bicycle in his sarong still waving a stick at his ducks, the sons are driving brand new cars, dressing in designer clothes and sending their kids to school in Singapore and Australia. It is positively weird in some ways. In Western countries and even in the cities of Indonesia and neighbouring countries, change has come progressively, here it has happened in the space of a generation. A new facebook group, Lost In Bali, is filling up
fast with photos of scenes that seem, to those who have lived here for these past two decades and more, to be fairly recent memories, the photos look like they could have been taken in the 1960’s and some were. In a time when our Balinese friends and our staff were like family, we celebrated their births, deaths and marraiges as they celebrated ours. The social divide has increased as well. No one has time to stop and cuddle the pembantu’s baby, if they even realised she had one. As the gap between rich and poor Balinese has grown so has the distance from our neighbours. It isn’t all bad though. Some of the stories bemoaning the inconveniences of the old days are laughable, some of the memories of plastic cheese jaffles and UHT topped “cappuccinos” are scary. The austerity measures taken by businesses back then also make you laugh. Remember when they used to cut the napkins in half? Maybe you don’t, but plenty of people do. It is hard to believe really how life has changed, and prices of land and services goes up by the minute as more people escape to Bali, only to find it is becoming more and more like the metropolises they left. Nostalgia has its place, as does the inevitable progress, each has its pluses and minuses, but anyone who waited twenty years to return to Bali will be floored by the change, the relentless pursuit of money and the reality of the traffic. One does sometimes yearn for the simpler life. [Sarah D]

Homegrown & Well Known:
AYU LAKSMI Interview by Rudolf Dethu
www.beatmag.com
There are many things that you don't know about this lady rocker-cum-world music diva. These questions and answers will help you understand Ayu Laksmi deeply, how she evolved from thinking that screaming (being a rock singer) was cool, then finding out that chanting (being a new-traditionalist artist) was even cooler. I'm sure that lots of people don't know that you were a (very popular) "lady rocker" in the 80s. What made you decide to change direction from rock to world music? Changing direction was not a plan, and trying different genres of music wasn’t either. You can say that I'd always been fond of searching, experimenting. I always explored various genres of music. When I got into a certain kind of music intensively, in this context, rock, people thought that was my final destination (and tagged me permanently as a "lady rocker"). I don't mind that label, I was more than happy at that time to be noticed by the general public. Plus back then I was still young and it just felt cool to be a rocker. I was glad that I could reach "fame and fortune" relatively, at least-on a national scale. But then I realised that the "lady rocker" thing, screaming out loud, was not really me. Nothing against the
music. It just didn't represent my true character, it felt far from my inner soul. Not long after that I fell in love with Latin music and ended up on an international cruise ship singing Latin (and jazz) music, in Spanish and Portuguese. And then the first Bali bomb exploded. I was invited to perform in a charity concert representing Bali. I was a bit confused about what to offer. Latin, rock, jazz, I didn't think they were Bali, or somehow suitable, enough. I felt the universe was somehow whispering to me that I should offer something that is very common in Bali, something comforting and representative of my Bali side: old ancient chanting (usually used in Balinese Hindu ceremonies). So I chose the traditional chant "Arjuna Wiwaha". I rearranged
f e a t u r e
098
the melody into a more contemporary version, and adjusted the mantras so the whole thing worked together. The career I have today all began from there. Oh yeah, the reaction from the public wasn't completely positive. A few observers even thought I was destroying my singing career. Honestly speaking, the occasional pessimistic reactions bothered me a bit, as I really wasn't sure if I was on the right track. But my gut feeling told me to stick at it. The first few months weren't easy. But support from friends whom I really respect and trust kept me going. I'm glad that I followed my instinct.
www.beatmag.com
It seems like you've made the right decision because slowly but surely people have became very enthusiastic about your new music and style. I think so. What I'm sure about is that I'm so happy these days. I am no longer searching for who I really am, musically. I feel at home with World Music. Meanwhile the response from the public has evolved beautifully. In the beginning it was not too explosive, but interest in what I am doing has slowly grown as time goes on. Some comment that my music has solid Archipelago nuance, incorporates a fusion of traditional harmonies, or is somehow similar to Kitaro, Enya, Enigma, or Deep Forest. I find all of this kind of feedback complimentary. Being under appreciated in the beginning was actually a good thing, it built up my determination to work even harder to prove that I could make it. You have performed a few overseas concerts in the past 12 months. How were you received by non-Indonesian audiences? Between the USA and Europe probably the most memorable concerts were in Brussels Musical Instrument Museum in Belgium, and in the Floriade Festival in Venlo, The Netherlands. I wasn't confident that I could attract audiences to my shows—especially Floriade, this "sacred" event which is held only once every ten years. Even some of my colleagues shared my hesitations. Surprise, surprise, with God's help, the concert halls were both a "full house". The audiences seemed blown away with my performances. Most of them hadn't seen anything like the "magical rhythm of Bali" before in their lifetimes. To see them that blown away, blew me away too. Hehe. What are you doing today? Any big plans for the near future? Right now I'm preparing the follow up to my previous album, Svara Semesta. As well as
writing specially requested theme songs, music scoring for documentary movies, etc. These past few months I've been busy with other art-related activities as well. For instance, I acted in a spectacular theatre show titled Gandamayu, directed by Fajar Arcana. Even though I have some experience in acting, and have been in a few movies, this theatre thing was quite different, as it meant performing live. I'm so glad that it went well. I received lots of very positive feedback as a result of my participation. How do you find the music industry in Bali and Indonesia? Bali itself, I think, can create her own path via the current world music craze. The uniqueness and dynamic aspects of Balinese-style music has stirred world music enthusiasts around the world. Eventually this enthusiasm will take Bali music to a higher level in the global scene. In the context of Bali pop music, the musicians who sing in Balinese will probably continue to struggle to compete nationally. Especially these days, as Indonesian kids are so into K-Pop, and are showing reduced interest in local creative talent. Not to mention linguistic challenges. But the Bali pop/indie music scene seems to be doing OK. Say bands like Superman Is Dead and Navicula, after many long hard years they finally have their own avid fans. Whatever happens to the music industry in Indonesia, they'll be fine. They are relatively independent of Jakarta. They have their own bridge that takes them to their fans. I believe that the Bali music industry can exist independently, that it's different to what exists in Jakarta. World music practitioners, indie/ alternative music musicians, all sit together and hold serious discussions. They set certain integrated goals that benefit all aspects of the Bali music industry, helped by brilliant visionaries/promoters/producers/observers who become the mediators between artists and the global market. Bali needs people like you (I mean it, seriously. What are you doing in Sydney? Come back home!), Franki Raden, Peter Gontha, many others. Any last nagging words? Do it now. Time is running out. The more we delay, the more scared we become to move beyond our comfort zone—what we really want will never happen that way. Go do it. Now.

If
you’re tired of the Jalan Oberio shuffle and hustle, move on down to Jalan Batu Belig where a whole new string of top notch restaurants have popped up. One of these is the Pavilion restaurant, with none other than Bali’s favorite blond, double trouble gal, the fun loving social butterfly, the very beautiful Vanessa De Vries. We’re on. Vanessa de Vries, born in Amsterdam, age 32, mother of a son, Lennon who is four years old. Some background history, education and so forth. I went to international business school where I studied wholesale and retail. I worked in advertising with a few marketing companies, met my partner when I was 20, at 23 we started to travel around the world, we stopped in Bali for a small visit before Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, never made it up there as I fell in love with Bali, that was in 2005. You now have the new restaurant the Pavilion on Jalan Batu Belig, how did that come about? Well that’s something my family did, the bar business, as far as the culinary side, that’s not me, I’m not a cook, I did give it a try though, cooking classes and such, but I just don’t have the talent for it. Don’t get me wrong, I love food and I’ve been eating out ever since I can remember. I love high quality food, and what I do at Pavilion is to make sure it’s what I like, which is high quality. I’m very particular with food choice and ingredients. So you have good taste, do you taste good as well? What do you think? I think a lot. What kind of cuisine do you serve? International dishes people are familiar with all over the world, favorites, and the best of that. Besides the cuisine, from what I understand, you’ve had a few acts here, are you planning on doing events here as well? Yes, we had the Afronesia band and on several occasions DJs, that’s on Fridays, sunset sessions,
aperitifs, a full sparkling wine bar at a nice price, and cocktails where we only use fresh fruits with alcohol. On the event schedule, we will be doing something every six weeks, art events, and photo exhibitions, Mondays are already mellow elegant sounds with various artists during dinner, you know to set the mood while dining, that kind of mellow atmosphere, and kids karaoke on Sundays. Thinking of doing single events every month, sort of a meet ball... not meat ball! I’m glad you cleared that up, I was beginning to wonder. That will be once a month and I’m creating different themes for each event. I’m also creating a musical platform for artists, having competitive contests, showcases for the talent we have here in Bali. I’m open for anything, dancers, whatever, I just want everybody to have a good time with an open house and a good time feeling. I’m here with my high heels to make sure of that. This is my baby, I designed and created it with a loving passion, combing influences that I captured around the world that appealed to me, clean, yet sexy, sophisticated, but fun. What would you say are your influences on that note? Loving to travel and eat, like I said before, and enjoying life combined with love for people, music and good times. So those influences I would say come from my parents. I was raised by separate parents that were very stable and both have outgoing personalities. My dad is a true gentlemen with the right attitude for business, also known for his live music venue in the center of Amsterdam and his love and weakness for a good pair of legs. My mother’s slot machine exploitation is probably also one of the reasons I love what I love. That sounds more like a philosophy. OK, my main influence I would say comes from my mom’s family background, having a bar with slot machines and gambling, it was a very successful, exploitation and had a successful playboy attitude, with an outgoing personality. I do miss the buzz of Amsterdam and the city and in that respect I do want to offer that same buzz with all the sexy people in Bali, my partner didn’t want to really know about it, but the time has come today when I finally realized my dream of having my own place to play in. Back to your philosophy? I see life as light with positive energy and excitement. To your would be fans? Kisses. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

This more casual style of a wine event is Berlinger at gaining traction as Gado Gado the new way to Brunch host public wine tastings – a realm once cornered by the ubiquitous wine dinner until recently. Beth Orton
Sugaring Season
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
U
nlike many of her peers, English folkie siren Beth Orton appears to have matured quicker than most, with a fertile back catalogue of beautiful, introspective, wisebeyond-her-years songs that hint at an artist who knows how to play to her strong points whilst never shying away from a little experimentation. Every bit the prolific songstress, she’s collaborated with artists as diverse as Ryan Adams, Ben Harper, Bert Jansch and the Chemical Brothers, earning herself a legion of fans and repeated critical acclaim, which is certain to be continued with latest LP, the wonderfully accomplished Sugaring Season. Those who enjoyed 2009’s heart-warming Comfort of Strangers will feel right at home here, as Sugaring Season continues in a similar fashion of immediately accessible folkpop steeped in stirring strings, delicate guitar work and Orton’s ever stunning vocal style. Arguably her most coherent album to date, it’s the kind of music that campfires were invented for, with a folky edge and autumnal mood that Orton is careful to never allow to slip into twee sentimentalism or boring self-indulgent folk by numbers. Opener “Magpie” is a great example of this, with a traditional sounding arrangement built around soaring strings that lends an edgy feel similarly felt on the orchestral “Candles”. The gorgeous“Dawn Chorus” may well be one of Orton’s prettiest tracks to date; “I was lonely as the moon who longs for the sun to come by/I’d wait and wait and wait and wait/but never seem to share the same sky” she whispers effortlessly, clearly having mastered this lyric writing malarkey. Elsewhere tracks like the plinky-plonky “See Through Blue” show that’s she’s still happy to step out of her comfort zone and try something a bit different, with subtle influences from languid jazz (“Something More Beautiful”) and even country (“Call Me the Breeze”) drifting in and out across the album. My only gripe with Sugaring Season is it’s all over far too quickly – the ten tracks rattling by in a swift 40 minutes, which is nowhere near enough time to let the campfire burn itself out. an exciting climax to a spectacular three days of competitive surfing at the 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing Taitung County yesterday, Indonesia’s Raditya Rondi posted his second consecutive ASC Men’s Open victory of the 2012-2013 tour season by besting Australian Dean Brady in a riving 23-minute man-on-man final, winning the largest single division prize money prize of $75,000 NTD ($2,500 USD) so far on the ASC tour and in the biggest surfing competition every held in Taiwan. Rondi, who was recently crowned the 2012 Indonesian Surfing Championship Men’s Open Champion and already has two Asian Surfing Championship Men’s Open titles to boast about, was up against a formidable opponent in Dean Brady, who was one of Australia’s top ranked Pro Junior surfers and is now an internationally known free surfer.

Both competitors and the spectators waited in anticipation for the scores to come down from the judges tower, the ASC Director Tipi Jabrik announced that Brady’s score came up just 1 point short, as he needed a 7.2 point score but earned only a 6.2. In the Women’s Open Division it was five-time Indonesian Women’s champion and two-time Asian Women’s champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea (IND) who took out her second consecutive event win of the year, just edging past Taiwan’s Jessie Hong in the final minute. The Longboard Final was a spectacular display of both progressive and traditional longboard surfing, with world champion Taylor Jenson (USA), young Aussie phenom Nic Jones (AUS), two-time Indonesian and Asian champ Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat, and ASP number one ranked Georgia
Young showing the Taiwanese crowd on the beach everything from hang fives to hang 10s, floaters, deep gouging cutbacks and re-entries, aerials, and maneuvers that haven’t even been named yet, to draw massive rounds of applause and cheers after every wave. Jenson won the final matchup, scoring the event’s highest single wave score of 8.9 point (out of a possible 10) on his final wave to the delight of the crowd. In the Junior “Grommet” Division final (16 years of age and under), Australia’s Harry Bryant wowed the crowd with his impressive ‘go for it’ style, taking first place over Rory MacDonald (TWN), Taitung local Wang Zhen Ming “Monkey”, and Wolf Wertheimer (USA). At the awards presentation held the evening after the day’s finals had been concluded, Taitung governor Jason Huang thanked the competitors, the judging panel, the ASC, and the event organizers for their support and hard work at making the event such a great success, and promised to continue to support the growth of surfing in Taiwan. The 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing was an Ultima grade Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned surfing competition, sponsored by the Taitung County government, with total prize money of the NTD 600,000 (USD $20,000) across the Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Longboard Open, Juniors, and Noserider Pro Invitational divisions, which is the biggest prize purse ever offered in a surfing event in Taiwan. W H O S E CAN V A S
Ketut Karyana has a natural talent in creating his works. Inspired by the rich Balinese art scene, he has developed his own organic style. Born in Lombok on December 12, 1969 and nurtured in a government-sponsored art community in Mataram, Karyana used to paint realism and naturalism styles, like portraits, scenery, and the social and traditional life of Lombok. But in 2005, he developed a new personal technique combining water color with oil and ink.
a r t Now, he explores this new found technique in his latest exhibition called “Evolution” which is currently going on at Bridges Bali. He once said that the diversity of form in the universe remains a mystery, and it inspires him to create new forms of living beings. The exhibition is also part of an art auction to support Yayasan Peduli Bali’s new free HIV/AIDS testing and treatment clinic in Ubud which is funded by a grant through Rotary Club Bali Ubud. Karyana’s exhibition will run through March 23.

Surrounded by tranquil lotus ponds and flowing waterways, the spa complex resembles a Balinese village, where ornate doorways give way to an inner sanctuary of four single and four double (spa villa) treatment rooms.
The epitome of traditional, the whole facility exudes a classic Balinese atmosphere that permeates the mind and body through all senses. The semi open-air treatment bales provide the ultimate in privacy and serenity, allowing a closer connection with nature afforded by the sounds of gently swaying palms and quiet chatter of bird song from the surrounding gardens to wash over you.
A full menu of signature spa packages, facials, scrubs, wraps and treatments ranging from one to five hours are complimented by the use of the finest quality Biodroga treatment products imported from Germany, administered by expert local Balinese female spa therapists.A unique selection of six key essential oils for aromatherapy treatments ensures an holistic cure for a number of everyday complaints.

A charming retreat for those who value a quiet relaxing time in a remote natural paradise.
Location
Villa Puri Nirwana is located at Cucukan beach in Medahan, right on the border of Badung and Gianyar regencies, around 35 kilometers northeast of Ngurah Rai International Airport. The area may not be as well known as Kuta for most travellers but if you want to experience the natural beauty of Bali that doesn’t get advertised too often, Cucukan is the place to be. It’s only a half an hour drive to destinations like Ubud with its thriving cultural scene, and Sukawati art market. Moreover the villa is situated near Bali Safari & Marine Park which offers plenty of family entertainment.
www.beatmag.com
Look
There’s ample open space to play, relax, or party at Villa Puri Nirwana with well-manicured gardens spread over the 5000 square meter beach-front property. At the center stands a 1200 square meter two-storey colonial style building with six large luxurious bedrooms. The building is predominantly painted in white with high ceilings and marble floors. The interior décor is a combination of modern tropical with hints of traditional Javanese and Balinese styles.
Atmosphere
The villa is surrounded by a sleepy fishing village that looks exactly the same as before
big development came to the island. A typical lazy afternoon at Villa Puri Nirwana would be filled with nothing more than the sound of waves crashing on the Cucukan beach and the wind blowing on the leaves of tall coconut trees. The whole complex and the quiet beach out front is a luxurious hideaway at the less visited Eastern coast of Bali.
Features
Villa Puri Nirwana consists of six large bedrooms, three living rooms, a billiard table, a 16x5 meter beach-front swimming pool, Wi-Fi connection, and easy access for disabled guests. At the back of the main building there’s the spa in a beautiful 200-year-old Javanese country house, providing choices of treatments by certified therapists 12 hours a day.
