The new un-starred hotel that is being built at the end of the Sunset Road has to be the final nail in the coffin of the extension of the By-Pass Road through Canggu and onto Tabanan. The ByPass road has been slated to be built for over ten years and was to be the saviour to all our traffic problems, opening up the northern part of Seminyak and Canggu and making life a lot easier for the burgeoning communities and new settlers up that way. The enormous crane hoisting materials around the site 24 hours a day is like a modern day monument to the failure of town planning in the area and as moratoriums on new hotels are not enforced and spatial laws are not observed, the question begs, where do we go from here? Sure, Bali always gets across the line in the end and everything seems to sort out, but the whole game is getting more serious and more complex every year as thousands more visitors and settlers arrive every week. While the Simpang Siur underpass and new toll road are sure to benefit the airport, Kuta, and Nusa Dua traffic situations, little thought is being given to northern areas. I can’t imagine what’s going to happen when all that traffic ends up in the bottle neck of the Kerobokan and Batubelig traffic lights in years to come. It must be time for someone to stand up and do something about this situation. If the By-Pass Road plan is over, we need smaller connecting roads between the existing main roads as soon as possible to alleviate the strain and while it’s still possible. But please, don’t come through my back door while you are doing it. We’re almost at Christmas and New Year’s so enjoy the quiet before the rush begins. We’ll have all the info for the coming festive season in the next beat so stay tuned for that and meanwhile, check inside for all the events coming in the next two weeks inside the Whats On and HereNow sections.

Udayana University to digitalise ancient manuscripts Staff at Bali's Udayana University will oversee the review process of some ancient papyrus documents, hoping that closer study of the scrolls will yield more knowledge of the past. The collection of scrolls now held by the university numbers as many as 950 manuscripts, plus a collection of single texts, meaning it is the third largest collection on the island after Kirtya Gedong Museum, and the Bali Cultural Office. With a budget of Rp. 150 million in 2013, efforts will be made to develop a library of manuscripts, so that the process of digitisation, translation and interpretation of the content of the scrolls is optimised. In the future, it is planned that the digitised manuscripts will be made available to the general public, students, and faculty researchers. Tony Montana eatoss | saturday 08 DEC
Roots
Montana was born and raised in Bristol listening to electro music and 80s pop. Grandmaster Flash was his idol and he got into breakdancing, hip-hop, and at 14 years old, DJing. Obviously the art wasn’t as cool as it is today. But Montana stayed on course and before long started throwing parties, doing radio shows and club gigs. His first taste of fame came with the DDT crew alongside Dominic B.
Sound House
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
After relocating to London in 1995 Montana began working with the likes of Barbara Tucker, Josh Wink, Adam Freeland, The Shamen, and Miss Money-Penny’s. He played at Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher and world breakdance championships. Montana also kept himself busy with residencies at clubs in London, Nottingham, and his hometown, Bristol. He continued his upward trajectory and later, with clients like Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Elton John, conquering the world seemed to be the next logical step for him. In the 2000’s Montana started touring Asia, Australia, and the US with long stints in some of Bali’s best venues. From the World Winter Music Conference in Miami, to Met Bar Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur’s Zeta Bar, to sharing decks with dance music giants in Ibiza, Montana, in his own words, has been doing it all over the globe.
Why see him
Having a career that spans 22 years speaks volume about Montana’s mastery in DJing. His reputation for putting together an explosive set of music from as far back as 50 years ago that rocks dance floors is inimitable. And no, we’re not going to make any “little friend” references.

secondhand serenade boshe | sunday 09 dec
Roots
Secondhand Serenade began life in Menlo Park, California in 2004 as John Vesely’s solo acoustic project. Being the son of a professional jazz musician, a career in music was a natural choice for Vesely. He started out as a bassist in numerous local bands around his hometown of San Francisco Bay, California from the age of 12, playing styles of music that range from ska, hardcore, to rock and pop for eight years. Vesely picked up an acoustic guitar when his wife asked him to sing a song for her. Secondhand Serenade was born not long after as an acoustic act before incorporating more musical elements in its later years.
Sound
Acoustic, rock, pop
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard him
Awake, the band’s first album was originally released in 2005 as a demo of some of Vesely’s acoustic numbers. Initially it was promoted in Myspace and local shows. Online support for the album grew and in 2006 Secondhand Serenade became the Number 1 Independent Artist of the Month on Myspace. That year Secondhand Serenade ended up at number three on the Rollling Stones’ Best Myspace Artist list. In 2007, Awake was re-released by Glassnote and debuted at number 16 on on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart. Their follow up album A Twist in My Story came out around the same time. Vesely then recruited Steve Shebby, Lukas Vesely (his brother), Ryan Cook, and Tom Breyfogle as Secondhand Serenade began touring with bands like Making April and Automatic Love Letter. At the end of 2008, his first single “Fall For You” reached platinum and was number 13 on the American Top 40 at the end of the year. His third album Hear Me Now was released in 2010, which was immediately followed with an EP “Weightless” in 2011.
Why see him
John Vesely got to be the star he is now by moving millions of online listeners with his signature heartfelt melody and poetic lyrics. His music is honest and strong; a breath of fresh air for rock fans in the island that can only come from a true talent.

STAN DISTRICT | WEDNESday 12 DEC Stan Kreelekamp is half Indoensain and half Dutch and a hundred percent DJ. He grew up in Sydney and Holland and started spinning decks in 2000 and you’ll be able to catch him next week at District.
Q
A
2. Whats the best thing about being a DJ?
I get to do what I love to do, play music. I get to travel around and meet a lot of new people.
3. What’s the worst?
The worst thing is to get a lecture what to spin from the crowd or club management. (Y’all need to trust the DJ and let them play whatever they want, what’s the point if we all play the same Sh*# over and over again) sorry for the language.
4. If you had to listen to one artist for the rest of your life, who would it be?
I don’t really have a favorite artist, but probably Uncle Bob Marley. Who’s doesn’t like Bob Marley, right?
5. Look at your iTunes’ 25 most played playlist and what is in position 22,23, and 24?
22) Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhyme. 23) Broken Social Scene - All To All (Skeet Skeet’s Trap House Mix). 24) Nonchalant - Lazy Afternoon.
6. Who’s side were you on during the East Coast West Coast beef of the early 90s?
None, it aint my bizz hahaha
7. If Bonk the Donkey helped you out, would you help Bonk the Donkey?
Uhhhh, what is Bonk the Donkey? Sorry never heard of it haha but yeah I’ll help Bonk the Donkey for whatever he did for me.
8. What is your preferred weapon?
A crossbow would be dope!
9. Are you American?
No, I’m not
10. Has music gotten better or worse in the past 20 years? Explain.
Worse! I don’t need to explain I think y’all already know why
11. How did you feel about these questions?
Hmmmm, alright I guess. I don’t really get many interviews and I always answer short and simple.
www.beatmag.com
1. Describe yourself in a short freestyle rap (use the beat from the opening credits of the Fresh Prince)
Hahaha Don’t think so, I’m not a rapper, leave all the rhymin’ to the real MC’s.

Sara Wijayanto evo lounge bar CLUB @tHe banjar | saturday 15 DEC
Roots
Being a singer, song writer was not a tough call for Jakarta-born Sara Wijayanto. She grew up in a family who nurtured her passion for music. Sara has been singing since the age of four and has a talent for words which has lead her to write her own lyrics.
Sounds
Pop, RnB
Where you might have heard her
Her first professional break was being a backup singer for Slank during the 1994 “Generasi Biru” session and their “Emas” tour in 1995. Feeling determined to forge a career in music she went on to join a band in 1997 and began playing gigs at clubs and big festivals while doing a lot of backup vocals for more established artists and DJs on the side. A decade later Wijayanto received wider exposure by way of her photo spreads for Maxim and FHM. She began getting offers for TV and live appearances as a host and comedienne. Meanwhile since 2010 her singing career took off to another level. Wijayanto recently released a couple of singles under an indie label titled “Never Gonna Stop” and “Di Hati Selamanya”.
www.beatmag.com
Why see her
Despite her persona as full-blown media darling, Sara Wijayanto is an experienced singer who has been performing at clubs, parties, and festivals for more than a decade. Sara Wijayanto definitely has that killer combination of insane hotness and musical talent that will take her a long way and why not, go and check her out.

Calvin Jeremy jazz cafe | Tuesday 18 dec
Roots
Twenty two-year-old Calvin Jeremy has more experience as a musician than his boyish disposition would suggests. Jeremy credits his family for passing down their love of music to him. Drawing inspiration from the likes of John Mayer and Jamie Cullum, he began writing his own songs when he was 14 years old. One of his early works is “Selamanya” a number that later became the basis for his first album. A senior musician/ producer, Dian Pramana Poetra, liked the song so much that he decided to do the arrangement. What followed was a three year journey for the young artist that resulted in Jeremy’s debut album, Selamanya.
Sounds
Pop, jazz
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
Jeremy’s debut album, Selamanya came out in 2010 and contained the hit singles “Dua Cinta Satu Hati”, “Wanita Tak Biasa, and “Maaf”. It opened doors for appearances on major festivals, feature movies, and TV shows, including the All Star’s Sunday Afternoon Party Rocks on ABS-CBN channel in the Philippines. Jeremy also made a collaborative project with Asia’s multi-platinum acoustic star, Sabrina Orial that earned him considerable airtime on radios throughout Asia. Back home Jeremy continues his rise to fame with an eponymous album in 2012 that has enjoyed support from senior jazz artists including Nikita Dompas, Krishna Balagita, and Ari Pamundito.
Why see him
In just a couple of years, Calvin Jeremy’s rare musical talent has put him among the country’s best solo male performers. If good jazz laden pop is up your alley, you’d want to see Calvin Jeremy.

Louis La Roche HU’U BAR | FRIday 21 DEC
Roots
Louis La Roche was born Brett Ewels in Norwich, UK. He grew up in a time when dance music was sweeping through Britain and naturally consumed young La Roche’s musical life of classic disco, soul and funk which he picked up from his parents. Although he has never really learned to play instruments, he managed to channel his love of music through music programming early in his teens. La Roche then put out his music through the internet at 16, received a lot of recognition for it, and by 17 he was signed by a booking agency.
Sounds
French house
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard him
La Roche’s first shot to fame was rather accidental when his track “Love”, was mistakenly thought as a Daft Punk song and enjoyed half of a million plays on the internet and eventually prompted The Guardian to clear up the confusion. La Roche continued with releasing the EPs “Me & Her” and “Super Soaker”. He also did remixes on Madonna, Basement Jaxx, Fred Falke, Lonsdale Boys Club, Spiller, Don Diablo, The Chemical Brothers, The Swiss, Gorillaz, and Fatboy Slim, among others. In 2011 his single “Gimme Gimme/ The Wall” reached the top of the Beatport Chart. He is currently doing a lot of gigs in Europe, America, Australia, and China, sharing decks with artists whose music he used to listen to. La Roche’s music has also been played by the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, and Jaymo & Andy George.
Why see him
In just a few years since he was discovered through the web, Louis La Roche is now being touted as the next big star of British dance music. Catch the massively talented La Roche on the island this December and you might get a preview of his upcoming debut album Hello You.

Mild Seven - BLUEMOTION “Tokyo Urbanation” Bali
A
fter a successful string of events in Jakarta inspired by famous cities in the world and featuring popular international DJs, Mild Seven Blue Motion came to the island of gods to host competitions for young people of Bali under the theme of Tokyo Urbanation. The first challenge was a photography competition titled “Capture the Blue Angels” which was held on November 10 at exotic locations around Denpasar and Kuta like Ayucious café, Renon, Kuta Beachwalk and the Renon monument. Participants were required to capture the Blue Angels models, who are actually part of the Mild Seven brand team, in various captivating poses. At the end of the event participants took part in the pool side photo hunt and kicked back to a live music performance from Dialog Dini Hari, Bali’s widely popular Indie band. As part of the Mild Seven Bluemotion series, on November 16, it was Bali’s automotive fans’ turn to get into a challenge called Transform Your Ride into a Blue Car Contest which took place at Adora Super Club. It was an opportunity for the contestants to pimp out their rides according to the brand’s theme and the character of Mild Seven. They had to show off their skill and creativity through a number of amazing creations including drawings of Japanese and American action figures, sound system and blue lighting as well as other creative modifications. There was even a contestant who came up with a 3D sticker depicting the Mild Seven logo while
dressing up like a Japanese dancer to heat up the competition. At the end of the show, competitors were entertained by music from Adora Super Club’s resident DJs until the early morning hours. Meanwhile, on the very same day competitors in the photography contests gathered to learn about tips on photography directly from master photographer Darwis Triadi. The Mild Seven Bluemotion “Tokyo Urbanation” event was closed with the announcement of winners from the two competitions on November 17 at Adora Super Club. The event featured Stefano Noferini, an international DJ from Italy. It also featured appearances by the Maxim Girls. Congratulations for winning tens of millions worth of prizes to AA Ngurah Krisna (First prize winner in the photography competition), Gede Suwirajaya (Second prize winner in the photography competition), Satmoko Tody (Third prize winner in the photography competition), as well as Erick (First prize winner in the car contest), Adit (Second prize winner in the car contest), and Agung (Third prize winner in the car contest). Excited participants packed Adora Super Club until late for the announcement of the winners. The Mild Seven – Bluemotion series succeeded in attracting interest from Bali’s residents who are both creative and dynamic in their production of positive work.

Charity b egin s here
They say the source of happiness is being connected and making others happy.
As
we slide into December and the festive season, my calendar reveals more than one charity event. From the AIDS benefit to lunches in aid of orphans and disabled kids, seems like this is the season of giving. So it seems this could be the happiest of all festive seasons.
www.beatmag.com
A country such as this forces you to look at the haves and have nots every day. It’s impossible to ignore the children walking barefoot down the highway with their grubby faces turned hopefully towards you. Although it may be the case sometimes that the charity we dole out to them ends up in the pockets of scammers who are using these kids to profit themselves, it is still so hard not to feel for them. Best to always have some food on you so that at least they can enjoy that before their pick up and share date arrives.
much as they spend in a month. While sleek black cars whisper down the main street, how can we ignore the family of five riding on an old motorbike weaving in between? As new condos get built like Legos and moneyed investors snap them up faster than McDonald’s French fries, people nearby are still ploughing their rice fields by hand for a mere fraction of what the bathroom fittings cost. You don’t have to look far, even in Bali where the dollars are rushing in, to find someone who lives on little and works hard for it. It sometimes seems that there are so many events benefitting the poor, the needy, the disabled and disenfranchised, that you can get philanthropic fatigue, but inevitably something will stir you out of it, and it is often not far from your doorstep.
A couple of canny girls who strut the beat outside Bintang supermarket have struck a winning formula. When people refuse to give money, they ask sweetly for an ice cream. Having the chance to watch these kids one day, I was not surprised to discover they were eating a lot of ice cream. Good on them I thought.
You don’t have to be rich to find something you can give. It’s simple really and giving from your heart is the most important. Next time you buy an ice cream, get a few extra for some local kids, buy an old man a beer, offer up a day or even an hour of your time, be generous in nature, sometimes a smile and a kind word, taking an interest is all that is required to brighten someone’s day.
Out shopping with the staff, it’s impossible to ignore their shocked faces when your ham and pate bill adds up to hundreds of thousands, as
To really appreciate the festive season of giving, give something that has no strings attached, it really does make you happier. [Sarah D]

Interview by Rudolf Dethu
These last few months, you’ve been busy with running a bank, being a creative think tank for the local government, DJ-ing, and now cycling. Quite a shift.
www.beatmag.com
I tend to be all over the place when it comes to doing stuff. Some would say it’s multi-tasking responsibilities, others would say it’s overlapping duties. Micro-banking has positioned me in the micro-finance frontline and DJing has advanced me to the centre stage, both are alike; close to the hearts of people, to satisfy their senses, to cater their needs and wants. I just can’t ignore the fact that I’m a social animal, highly interactive to the point of distinct engagements. From ICT road-shows with STIKOM Bali (a computer college that I run) all over the island to managing financial portfolios for the masses, from creative discourses to playing music loud to communities, I do enjoy it all and take pride in what I can contribute to the cause. But, consciously, cycling is my “me” time. It still puts me in a crowd, in a band of brothers, part of a pack; but at a relative distance. Whether
it’s me leading the platoon or me left stranded, abandoned far behind the eager pack. What made you decide to turn to cycling? Is this how you pacify yourself these days? When it comes to one’s leisure time for pleasure, while a few would go golfing, many would go fishing and the rest would procrastinate, tinkering on their smart-phones, I choose fixed gear cycling. I’m not sure if scientists have really discovered why we never forget how to ride a bicycle, but I do believe cycling is cheaper than therapy in this age of insanity. With a ton of health benefits as well as a lengthy fact sheet of environmental related benefits, lets say cycling will make sure I outlive my enemies. As I became serious about my cycling over the years, the non coasting-always pedalling fixed gear has brought me to a clearer domain of personalities and communities, a new-fangled mutual respect about one’s ability, capacity and shared dreams. While fixed gear cycling has taught me going brakeless uphill is bad and going downhill is even worse, it has shown me the light about going the
jams encircling Denpasar.
Cycling teaches you that even though you might share the same physical fitness, your spirit endurance defines who you are. Cycling is my constant contemplation.
Herein, urban cyclists are surely accident prone, at risk like in other places all over the world, but it’s a challenge and a blessing at once. Trust me, you can really feel the beat of the island through cycling. We have the sun, sea, and mountains, go out and absorb the energy.
Psyclo 100K? First of all, meet Psyclo, the motley crew of speed freak fanatics, a mix of eco-defending urban cyclists who mash the hustle and bustle of Bali on fixed gears. We’re the biggest fixed gear crew in Bali with over 50 members, and most importantly, we are the most active fixed gear enthusiasts on the island. We ride daily from home to work, morning rides, sunset rides, night rides, critical mass, criterium rides, bali balap liar (alley cat races), and for sure, our signature ride, the signature-mentally taxing long distance ride every weekends. Just last month, we successfully organised the Psyclo 100K, a 100-kilometer long ride to East Bali, cycling from Denpasar passing through serene green hills of Gianyar, the smooth glaring hot tarmacs of Klungkung coastline, peaking at Sang Hyang Ambu Hill near Karangasem before a long downhill stretch of a dusty, rocky, fun, and crazy cyclo-cross track nearing the finish line at a virgin beach in Bugbug Karangasem. For the 90 riders coming from all over Indonesia as well as Australia, Finland, Malaysia and Singapore, the ride was surely a challenge but totally rewarding. The event has surely put Bali on the map for adventure and sport tourism, particularly in an urban-underground sense. Compared to bicycle-friendly cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen, even Sydney (not on Top 10 bicycle-friendly cities), Denpasar/Bali is oh-so far from ideal. How do you adjust, reduce the risk of having traffic accidents, pollution issues, etc? What should the government do? What have they done? Living in Bali where tradition blends seamlessly with modernity has it advantages for cycling adventures. It stimulates you to take your cycling outdoors, not to be confined, cornered statically in gyms with pumping music to get you going. Bali offers dynamic urban bike paths; a perfect blend of fun, fitness and nature as the landscape changes rapidly and seamlessly, from green lush scenery of Ubud to cosmo-cultivated sights of Seminyak to crazy car dodging-unforgiving traffic
Towns like Denpasar, Tabanan, and Gianyar have enforced car free zones every Sunday, let’s make the initiative count by having more cyclists on the road. For once, let’s become the traffic. You socialise a lot with the creative community. How do you find the creative movement in Bali? Are you optimistic? Psyclo can be included in the creative movement, right? I’m fortunate to be enclosed in such a milieu, from discoursing mind-bending ideas with the Bali Creative Community to environmental awareness campaigns with the menacing punk band Superman is Dead, Komunitas Anak Alam and Generasi Putih, from reclaiming public spaces through Ebullience art collaboration during Denpasar Festival to urban-youth art initiatives at Wisnu Open Space, the latest dynamic compound of art, library, radio, and coffee connoisseur house near Kerobokan. While we keep pushing the techno barriers with Deeper Shades of Wax Radio Mix at our beloved The Beat Radio Plus 98.5 FM, my cycling has opened doors for me in terms of plenty exciting creative collaboration at Wisnu Open Space. This December, the proprietors of Wisnu Open Space and creative minds alike have ventured into the launching of an online broadcaster called Rebel Radio Indonesia, the dissenting voices of urban and contemporary Bali that will go live and revolt in wavestreaming packages this December 12. While we’re at it, as cycling brings out the creative zest in you, on December 19, at Wisnu Open Space, I’m the co-curator of the Eco Defender music and art event showcasing in support of the environmental awareness campaign of RMBL and Walhi Bali. Therein, the younger members of Psyclo will unearth the #KudaMacan (Prancing Horse Legs and Pounding Heart of a Tiger) visual exhibition, doing a live mural featuring Made Bayak, guitar whiz of Geekssmile and painter, at the core of the blistering-rocking performance of Navicula, DJ Soundbwoy Dodix, SID and many more. Any last nagging words? Cycling surely is the new smart, fixed gears are the new cool and bike legs are always sexy!

Action, Adventure. Director: Dan Bradley. Writers: Carl Ellsworth, Jeremy Passmore. Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Adrianne Palicki, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. A remake from the 1984 film of the same name, Red Dawn tells the story of a group of young patriots from a city in Washington state becoming insurgents against North Korean occupiers who have invaded the United States. This is the first film by director Dan Bradley, who formerly was a stunt coordinator in many big Hollywood action films. It’s an interesting concept of what Americans would do when occupied given current and recent wars in the Middle East. Wolverines!

Beach House
Bloom
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
O
ccupying a space somewhere between daydreaming and shoegazing, the spectral dream pop of Beach House sees the achingly cool duo of Baltimore native Alex Scally and the French born Victoria Legrand further cementing their indie darling credentials on album number four. Like a shinier, more euphoric version of The XX, the distinctly Nico-ish Legrand whispers ambiguous vocals over Scally’s lush guitar and keyboard driven lullabies, flitting around each other like forlorn confetti in a breeze but never quite looking each other in the eye. Described by Legrand as an “abstraction of many feelings”, Bloom has that ethereal quality that is very much in vogue at the moment amongst music fans who like their music cool, and their emotional outpourings ambiguous. So far so good, but when then the gravitational pull of Beach House’s own weightlessness finally catches up about halfway through and sucks the album into a black hole of blurry repetition, the whole thing veers alarmingly into forgettable dirge territory. Worse, the Arctic chilliness of the album’s veneer means that getting under the skin of it is an effort in itself.
That’s not to say Bloom is boring; Scally’s guitar twinkles like bokeh fairground lights on “Myth”, the glittering “Lazuli” keeps the heart screws firmly tightened, and the anthemic “Wishes” unfolds with a solid guitar hook and booming drums that highlights the tension between the cinematic widescreen soundscapes vs. emotional introspection that underpins the album. Kinda like strolling around on an Icelandic glacier with a blindfold and a pair of thick earmuffs on after being dumped. Crack through the ice though, and there are plenty of beautiful moments to be had, the only problem is they may not leave much of a lasting impression. Dan Ashcroft

Monster // Makhluk Monsters play a real part in our lives. They represent the core of what we fear of and desire in others and ourselves. Swoon Gallery presents a collection of monsters created by the imaginations of seven artists. Tackling the title “Monster Makhluk”, the exhibition covers a personal journey of the encounters from the monsters living in the children’s dreams that sometimes terrify to ones in a frighteningly real yet equally elusive context. These monsters seem to come from somewhere deep in our imagination, and can create a particularly strong impact. The artists who are taking part in this exhibition are (the formerly blonde) Samara Naomi, Inka Fitria, Spencer Hansen, Aditya Surya Taruna, Aryo Dewa Bharata, Marco Cassani, and Sinaga Gaotama. The exhibition runs through December 25.

Sääski is currently holding a photography exhibition at Café des Artistes called “Ba-SuTi” or Bali, Sumba, Timor, and some of the photographs are printed on Bali bamboo (bedeg) and in monochromatic form. In this exhibition, Sääski wants to share his memories and feelings of Indonesia. He also said that he wants to put the three islands and two nations together, where he saw a lot of positive aspects of life in the young generations all over the area including East Timor.
Stop by to the exhibition and enjoy the positive beauty in each of Sääski’s photographs which will be continuing through to January 2.

ecently, the beauty of the Nusa Tenggara archipelago has attracted many people from around the world. A Finnish photographer, Ari Sääski, has fallen for the place after visiting the Nusa Tenggara islands for the first time, including Sumba, and our neighboring country, East Timor. Ari Sääski was born in Helsinki, Finland, and came to Bali as a wood carving student but he also had a deep passion for photography. In 2006, when he visited Sumba, he started to focus on the world of photography and found a great connection with it.

Looking for a trendy futuristic spa? Pullman Bali has what you need for an other worldly experience in pampering.
Look:
The bright, bold and brand spanking new Tjakra 7 Spa is a healing centre for people who are after something altogether more holistic. An oasis located in Kuta Beach’s trendy Pullman resort, the colourful spa interior is peppered with splashes of eye-catching bright oranges and greens amongst clean white surfaces and asymmetrical circular walls. With an elaborate hydrotherapy pool to boot, Tjakra 7 is a definite standout from other more traditional spas around the island.
www.beatmag.com
Feel:
Ingredients:
Blending traditional and contemporary approaches to body healing, Tjakra 7 boasts a range of hydrotherapy sessions, colour therapy, rejuvenation massages and body scrubs. While the smell of essential oils permeates all areas of the spa, those looking for a bit of serious aromatherapy would do well to check out the body wraps (60 mins, 275k) that come with a variety of scents such as pearl and rose, sandalwood, and green tea among others.
Magic:
More of a health centre than a spa, Tjakra 7 aims to restore vitality and wellbeing, whilst being pampered with a range of tropical spa treatments that will leave you feeling glowing from the inside out. Highly recommended comes the hydrotherapy pool and steam treatment (60 mins, 250k), where a series of water jets massage key areas such as the lower back, neck and feet. Coupled with a stint in the steam room, the hydrotherapy is perfect for muscular aches and pains. Not only that but your skin will feel deeply cleansed and refreshed.
If you are feeling out of balance, then maybe those chakras need tweaking back into alignment (60 mins, 390k). After a short massage, a selection of coloured crystals are placed at each of the seven key chakra points on the body for around 20 minutes. During this time spa guests are encouraged to empty the mind and focus on each of the points, to clear the body of negative energy and restore it to a state of equal balance. After the treatment a computerized prognosis provides an in depth readout to show just how balanced your chakras are.

Pelangi Estate
An exotic sanctuary in a rural farming village in Ubud Location
Banjar Jukut Paku in Singakerta, Gianyar, where Pelangi Estate is located may not be an established tourist area, yet it’s actually situated a mere 15 minutes from the famous cultural town of Ubud.
www.beatmag.com
Look
The three individually designed villas within Pelangi Estate merge boundlessly with the surrounding natural beauty. Villa Pelangi, the biggest of the three, is a four-storey country house style building with four bedrooms, perched on a four-tiered slope. Villa Pelangi boasts a combination of Mediterranean and traditional Javanese and Balinese design on the inside with earthy tone colored walls, hanging Moroccan lamps, and traditional carvings on door frames and windows. A similar theme of intricate Javanese wood carving and Mediterranean ornaments can also be found in the two-storey Java Guest House and the romantic Bhutan Cottage. The former consists of an authentic hundred year old Javanese house (Joglo) on top of a two-bed studio apartment. The latter is a wood cabin concealed behind neatly trimmed bushes with its own fountain and rice field view.
Atmosphere
Pelangi Estate is constructed on a 45-degree lush green ravine facing acres of rice fields owned by local farmers. The ambiance is unmistakably rural and gets even quieter at night with only the
sound of water flowing from the sprawling Wus River 100 meters below the estate.
Features
There are six bedrooms in the entire estate, one kids sleeping loft, three pools, and an outdoor wood deck terrace overlooking the river. Pelangi Estate provides in-house spa services, daily maid from morning to late afternoon, complimentary cell phone for free local calls, 24-hour security, and a shuttle to Ubud and back. The staff are very helpful and eager to provide assistance to make for a safe and comfortable stay.
Prices
Entire Pelangi Estate: $1,100/$1400 per night. Villa Pelangi USD 850/ 950 per night. 2/3 rental Villa Pelangi: USD 525/ 625 per night. Pelangi Suite: USD375/ 450 per night.
