Flying back and forth from Jakarta and Bali can have its good days and bad. I do it frequently trying to keep up with the two magazines we have in both parts of Indonesia and the last trip was a special one. I arrived by taxi to our apartment in central Jakarta after a flight from Denpasar and discovered my laptop wasn’t in the taxi. It was already 12.30am and we’re tearing the taxi apart trying to find my most valuable piece of equipment, but to no avail. OMG, it was gone. Everything, my files, my music, what’s going to happen to my radio show, I’m thinking. We try to call the airport but nobody picks up and after some time deliberating on the subject I’m in another taxi back to the airport. After the 3/4 hour trip I’m talking with the security and no one knows anything about a lost laptop. “Let me talk to Lion,” I appeal to the chief of security. They accompany me to the Lion lost property office at the far end of Terminal 3, we wake up the staff since my flight was the last that evening and everyone’s gone or asleep, and the guy, wiping sleep from his eyes, mumbles, yes there is a laptop. Ahhh, rejoice, halleluiah, the laptop was found in the bus (the one between the plane and the terminal) and given to Lion staff. How lucky is that? As I drove back to central Jakarta in another taxi at 3am I was counting my lucky stars. Move forward three days and I’m heading back to Terminal 3 booked on another Lion flight to Bali. I arrive at the counter to check-in, and everything’s normal. I ask the staff at the desk if we’re on-time. “Yes, on schedule,” is the answer. I get to the bank card lounge and a passenger mentions to me that there is some problem with the airport radar and all flights have been delayed. It’s 7pm and my flight is supposed to leave at 8.30pm. By 10.30pm they close the lounge and we’re told to wait in the departure waiting area. The place is packed when I arrive with approximately six flights of Air Asia and Lion passengers waiting for their planes to take off. There is pandemonium at that Lion desk as passengers are continually told to wait another 15 mins for further information that never appears to arrive. Frustrations were mounting by the hour until people milling around the desk, by this time hundreds, were yelling and screaming at bewildered staff, who didn’t appear to know what was going on. Classic! Most people were in good humour, while some were letting their frustrations show. It was one of these moments of camaraderie when people have a connection through adversity and it actually had its lighter moments. We eventually arrived in Bali after 3am and in the end, it wasn’t Lion’s fault and they did handle it rather well. Maybe some more announcements over the PA could’ve helped though. So meanwhile, we’re arriving now to one of the busiest times of the year. Check inside for all the details of what’s on around the venues for Christmas, New Year’s Eve and everything between. There is plenty on. We’d like to wish all our readers, clients and everyone who has anything to do with helping put this magazine together over the year a very merry Christmas and a wonderful and prosperous New Year 2013. It looks like it’s going to be a great one.

US company to invest $10 million into plastic
An American company will invest US$10 million to open a factory that will turn Bali’s plastic waste into shipping pallets. PT Enviro Pallets plans to open in Tabanan regency by the end of December, and will process roughly 30 tons of plastic waste every day. The factory will process plastic bags, food wrapping, noodle packages, and other plastic waste and will be part of the Bali Clean and Green program. As part of its operations, PT Enviro Pallets will also encourage producers and factories in Indonesia to replace their wooden pallets with plastic ones. The company will market the plastic pallets in Surabaya and Jakarta, as well as overseas. Harkin is inviting individuals and companies to bring and send their plastic waste to the factory, which will pay 500 rupiah (5 US cents) per kilogram for the waste. Foreign tourism to Bali expected to rise by 10%

The Bali Tourism Office is targeting a 10% increase in tourist arrivals to the island for 2013. According to Ida Bagus Kade Subiksu, head of the office, the target is to have 3.1 million foreign tourists visit Bali, either directly through an airport or seaport. They also expressed their hope that airport infrastructure, new highways, and the underpass will make the tourist situation better in 2013. The Tourism Industry Association of Indonesia (GIPI) Bali, agreed that the target was achievable, but projected that tourist arrivals in 2013 would not increase beyond 10%. They said growth will slow next year, due to a lack of tourist infrastructure and direct flights to Bali. Estimates of foreign tourist arrivals to Bali are made more difficult due to the fact that the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) only records the direct arrival of foreign tourists from overseas, and not from within Indonesia. funky gong www.beatmag.com
Hard Rock CafĂŠ Bali | Friday & saturday 14 Dec - 5 jan
J
apanese musician Funky Gong has been playing guitar in bands since 1980. He tuned into the decks during the 90s and has been combining an eclectic mix of psychedelic rock and dance beats ever since. He’s back in town for a month long stint at Hard Rock Cafe Bali and the beat had the chance to pose some questions last week before his opening gig.
1. What would you call the kind of music you play?
A
This time I prepared a very special and new style Funky Gong rock set influenced by the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s classic rock and I play mash up electro style. Everything mixed up together! I use pioneer FX for looping, beat krush and delay filters etc... Sometimes I will play electric guitar to give a more live emotional feeling!
2. Has your music been evolving lately, morphing into some new foreign territory?
Yes! I am brushing up a new Joujouka album while I am in Bali. Our sound is very new and we are planning to go on tour 2013. I am getting inspiration in Bali to work for my upcoming solo album with more tribal, bass, many rock styles, tech house, African beats and maybe 70s funk like “mixture techno”. My DJ sets include many more styles now like techno and progressive beats. I love 80s punk, new wave, metal, hip hop very much and rock n roll of course. Jeff Beck’s “What Mama Said” or Mick Jagger’s “Think” I like very much. At the moment my heavy rotation play is a techno track “Phunk Investigation / Say Goodbye (Tomcraft Remix) / Tiger Records”.
3. You’ve played a number of times in Bali before, what were the highlights on those occasions?
66 Club with Joujouka for New Years Eve 2007 I think and a Boat Trip to the Gillis for Love Movida 2005 with 5000 Watts Sound System and F Lounge for New Years Eve and very fun underground Party 2006 with Suicide Glam organized by Mammasitta, my Manager (Massivevibrations). Oh and big Madskippers party together with Rinko, Tsuyoshi and Theo , Gibran from Jakarta and Alex Joy. Very much fun with all my friends together. One time I also played at Home Café.
4. You were playing in bands during the 80s. Then joined DJ Tsuyoshi Suzuki to form JOUJOUKA, breaking new ground in the rock/dance music world. What do you like best about the live guitar and dance beats mix you guys have come up with?
We want to make images for the techno, house, electro, and trance party DJs imagining Jimi Hendrix among us! I want to give the experience! I think it’s a very very exciting situation to combine rock with dance music. I’m not Jimi Hendrix but I play Jimi Hendrix tracks sometimes to create a live atmosphere like in the old days.
5. You are going to be playing at Hard Rock Cafe for a whole month of weekends until January 5. Are you playing with the DJ or with the band? What’s it all about?
I’m invited to play as a DJ this time but will play electric guitar tracks with my original music from my last album “blow”. Hope I can come back with our live five piece band Joujouka another time. Tsuyoshi misses Bali so much.
6. Can the Hard Rock crowd expect anything different from you this time around?
I have a totally new DJ style! Never been heard before. I collected so many good rock tracks from the 50s until now. Just wait and rock on with me Bali! Bali is such a good inspiration for me because it’s a very spiritual land. I meditate every day and there’s a good energy for the gigs. I am very thankful for coming to Indonesia many times.
You can catch Fungky Gong Friday and Saturday nights for the next few weeks live at Hard Rock Café Bali.

The Prima Vista String Quartet hotel tugu bali | friday 28 dec
Classical Music Soiree
A rare gathering of classical musicians will take to the stage in Bali this December, giving visitors and residents a rare opportunity to watch accomplished artists perform works by some of the world’s greatest composers. Hotel Tugu Bali will host the classical music soiree for the third time, under the thatched roof of its majestic Wantilan Agung Hall.
Performing
This year’s impressive line-up of world-class musicians will feature the piano, flute and a soprano, as well as the strings from The Prima Vista String Quartet. This Polish ensemble, (two violinists, viola and cello player), is one of Europe’s most celebrated chamber music groups, having played together for 15 years. They have a particular interest in salon music of the 19th and 20th centuries and a special penchant for Mozart, performing at the Mozart Festival in Warsaw each year. This is the first time they will play in Bali. Boris Kraljevic, concert pianist and piano professor, born in Montenegro and now residing in Singapore, is one of the world’s most sought after pianists. This will be the third year Professor Kraljevic takes to the stage in Bali. Neil Franks, a student of the professor and accomplished pianist in his own right, will also perform on the evening. Soprano Sung Hee Park and flautist Soyoung Lee, are both from South Korea.
www.beatmag.com
Repertoire
The Prima Vista Quartet will perform Bach’s Concerto in F minor, as well as the famous A. Dvorak: Piano Quintet No.2, Op 81. Soprano Sung Hee Park and flautist Soyoung Lee will charm the audience with their individual repertoires including well known arias from some of the great operas. Pieces by Scarlatti, Mozart, Ravel and Offenbach will also be played.
Where
The classical music soiree will take place at Hotel Tugu Bali on Friday, December 28 from 6.30pm. Tickets cost 500k inclusive of welcome drink, concert and tapas dinner, where guests will have the chance to mingle with the musicians.

MIA potato head | saturday 29 dec Roots
Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam was born in London in 1975 and moved to Jaffna, Sri Lanka when she was six months old. Her father was a Tamil activist in a time when the country was divided along ethnic lines and eventually erupted in civil war. Her life until she was eleven was one of constant displacement and poverty due to the war. When her primary school was destroyed by soldiers, her mother decided to relocate to London where they were housed as refugees. She went to school in England, soon learned English and eventually graduated with a degree in fine art, film and video from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. She befriended musicians in college and made album art which led her to touring with them before making her own music.
Sounds
Electronic, alternative dance, alternative hip hop, world, grime, indietronica, R&B
Where you might have heard her
www.beatmag.com
The first thought that should come into mind when mentioning MIA has got to be “Paper Planes” which was released in 2008 and heard just about everywhere. It went triple platinum and is the 29th most downloaded song of the digital era. There’s obviously much more to MIA’s rise to fame which started in 2003 with the release “Galang” which was pressed onto a meager 500 vinyl records. The popularity of the song in clubs, fashion shows, and the internet brought her to attention of XL Recordings who then signed her in 2004. From then on it was a steady climb to fame marked by extremely stylized music videos and uninhibitedly unique fashion and style choices in addition to, of course, a ton of hits.
Why see her
MIA is more than just a musician, she’s a rock star. Remember last year’s Superbowl when she controversially said the S word and flipped America the finger? That was some badassness. She said she was just in the moment and if she’s going to conjure up those same emotions and put it in the Potato Head show, it’ll be a raw power you’ll have to enjoy.

Danny Marquez Ku De Ta | new year’s eve Roots
Danny Marquez spent hours practicing behind the turntables as a kid in his hometown of Barcelona. As he got older he began to pick up gigs in the local clubs. Taking his main influences from the old school house producers of his early years, Danny has been delving into different genres of house music without losing sight of what’s most important to him: the quality of the music and the good vibes. After a few years he became a regular and standout in Ibiza, where he established residencies for many years during the summer seasons. Most notably Space, considered to be one of the best clubs in the world, where he rocks thousands of clubbers week after week.
Sounds
House, Afro, deep and soulful house.
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
Danny has made multiple productions and remixes over the years through his label Bubble Soul Music. He’s played in big, standard and underground clubs and says he still values most connecting with people on the dance floor. Lately, the music has taken him all around the world playing in many different countries with great success and as he says, the best way to feel and share the vibe he creates is on the dance floor. Constantly evolving, this artist continues to work hard in the studio to deliver cutting edge and progressive electronic dance music. His upcoming releases for 2012 will showcase Danny Marquez’ trademark “big room sound” and you can expect to take some of those for a spin next week.
Why see him
Having conquered the global electronic music scene for over a decade with a strong discography of club hits as a producer, Danny Marquez has gained solid recognition in the international house circuit and is now spinning in the best clubs around the world and to top that, he is also travelling the world as a resident DJ for “Space Ibiza On Tour”.. Come New Year’s Eve, Marquez will be celebrating in style with the fine folk of Kudeta accompanied by Jim Breeze and BTK.

Roots
Ever since Sarah was a wee child she had music all around her. She started playing the violin and learned music theory when she was only five years old. She continued her musical education for 10 subsequent years before becoming a glamour model moving on to electronic dance music. That’s where the fame began…
Sounds
Funky house, high energy electro/house.
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
Robertson was a full time model with an impressive resume that included Gold Coast Fashion week, Versace, Calvin Klein, G-STAR, Veve Swimwear, Maneater and Fressh Clothing. She’s also modeled her bod for magazines such as FHM, ZOO Weekly and Ralph Magazine and has ranked in the top five sexiest women in the gold coast. She then went on to tour with 15 other Playboy Bunnies to Macau where she “rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous” at the opening of the new Playboy Club in Macau. She was a resident Play Boy Bunny DJ at the Playboy Club in China which landed her a job as a resident at Hong Kong’s Republik. She also toured with the Stafford brothers and Timmy trumpet last year and was featured in their reality television show. She’s also played at the Playboy Mansion in LA alongside Sasha Grey, Steel Panther and other A-list celebrities. She’s also shared the stage with notables such as Snoop Dog, Flo Rida, LMFAO, Moby, Justice, Calvin Harris, Pendulum, Bombs Away, Sneaky Sound System, Stuart OJelay, and more.
Why see him
Did you look at that picture to the top left? Look again. Ok, look one more time. Her website says that she’s more than just a pretty face. We can tell. How many DJs look like that? Not many and apparently she knows how to spin a beat into musical club dancing magic. That’s something we can all get behind.

Sem Thomasson hard rock cafe | new year’s eve
Roots
Originating from Hasselt, Belgium, Sem Thomasson is a force to be reckoned with. This young and successful DJ was given his first digital sampler at the age of 12 and managed to release his first record at 18. Needless to say, he had an early start in his career. As a boy Thomasson was very influenced by his father, a blues pianist who made countless tunes on their piano, a process of creation that fascinated and baffled Thomasson. He then sought to fulfill his life long dream of producing and DJing through creating his own music and jumping onto and into the Eurodance scene. Sem Thomasson and his close friend Xavier sought to develop the Belgium music scene and they both began their own label, enabling them to garner contacts, meeting others in the industry.
Sounds
Electronic dance music (EDM)
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
Sem Thomasson is known in the international dance scene for his many hits such as his Nelly Furtado remix of “Parking Lot” and his famous single “Aorta”. His name is well known throughout European clubs and as such is well respected in EDM circles. He has recorded with a variety of labels, such as Global Underground and Atlantic Records. Thomasson has also worked with many of the world’s biggest names in the music industry, remixing Steve Aoki and Cody Simpson.
Why see him
Electronic dance music is a very hard genre to survive in. However, Sem knows exactly how to work the crowd and he is one of the best at doing it. He has within him he uncanny and precise ability to blend and use at his disposal, a variety of beats that often forces one to dance. His music is almost merciless never fully letting one recover and constantly hitting peaks. So let loose and lose yourself to his music. Thomasson promises an unforgettable night out.

Michael Franti Waterbom is hosting a charity event for Robin Lim’s Bumi Sehat on New Year’s Eve and performers include Franti and Spearhead, Nahko and Medicine for the People, The Soul Doctors, and Jim Larkin and the Saucy Soul Band. Franti is also performing at Kudeta on Christmas day.
Waterbom-Bali | New Year’s eve
Q
A
1. I hear you come from a multi-cultural background, how does that reflect on your music?
I was adopted and I grew up in a family of very mixed ethnicity, so as an adult my mother and sister insisted we treat everyone the same, which meant we must also treat everyone in the world the same – not just in our house. This idea is reflected in my music.
2. Do you ever feel like a different person when you have a different hat on? What is the difference between Michael Franti the poet, the singer, and the activist?
They’re all the same hat, I don’t feel different. Sometimes I’m writing words and sometimes I’m writing music, but it’s all to inspire positivity in the world.
3. Can you give us a quick haiku about Bali?
I’m not sure how many syllables are in a haiku, but: BALI ROCKS
4. You care passionately about peace in the Middle East. What are your thoughts on Palestine being granted non-member observer status by the UN?
I wish that Palestine was granted full statehood in the UN, but anything that goes toward that is a positive step in the right direction. However, I’m not going to feel satisfied until the freedoms that are held by Israeli’s are also held by Palestinians.
5. Tell us the best thing about being barefoot?
The best thing about being barefoot is that it’s a different experience every day. Every step you feel something different on your feet. Sometimes it’s nice warm sand, and then sometimes it’s something gooey and sticky and takes some getting used to. One thing is you learn to be mindful of every step.
6. The worst?
The worst thing is the cold. But everything else is okay.
7. Do you feel like you’re transforming musically? What direction are you going in?
With this album we’ve done a lot more dance music than we ever have. But every time we make a new record, I’m trying to make the best record I can and experiment with lyrical sounds and ideas - but I always have something people can sing along to.
8. What can we expect from your shows in Bali?
I love Bali, it’s my second home and I love playing shows here. My first show there was also a benefit for Bumi Sehat, so we’ve been doing it for a few years now. I believe in the work of Robin Lim and all the work they do at Bumi Sehat. If you’re not able to catch us at one of the shows we’re doing then stop off in one of the local bars because I’m always jamming in one of those too!
9. If you look at your 25 most played songs on iTunes, what songs are in position 7, 11, and 13?
I have no idea. I never pay attention how they sell, I just care about how they sound.
10. You’re looking at this set of questions on some sort of screen, look to the left of the screen. What is the first object you see and how did that one thing change the world?
That would be my left foot on the ground in front of my iphone and I don’t know if my left foot has changed the world. Daniel Day Lewis did a great film that changed me and it was called “My Left Foot”. That film changed my world.
11. You were an outspoken supporter of Barack Obama during his first inauguration and even recorded a song about him. Have you done anything similar to that this election year?
This election I performed one of the concerts benefiting Barack Obama’s campaign. I believe in the work he’s trying to do in America. We have very evenly divided left and right parties and it’s hard for anyone to get anything done because there’s very little give from the Republican Party, and a lot of inflexibility at the moment and past decades. I’m hopeful for the next four years and I hope things in our country improve economically and for the rights and freedom of marriage, an end to the war on drugs and withdraw from Afghanistan. These are all things I do feel can happen over the next four years.
12. If there was one place on earth that is going in the right direction, where is that place?
Earth! All of earth is rotating in one direction and no matter what we as humans do, it’s going to continue to do that. We need to look to become great stewards of our planet. I see the consciousness growing internationally in terms of awareness in climate change, pollution, and finding sustainable energy, so I think the desire to be great stewards of our planet is going in the right direction.
13. How did you feel about these questions?
Great questions. There were some questions I’ve never been asked before and that’s always exciting when interviews are different and help me to think about things in a different way. Thank you!

Bert Bevans nammos beach @ kandara | New Year’s eve
Roots
Born a twin in Belize, British Honduras and raised in NY, Bert started DJing in the early 70s at the traditional house or block parties in Hollis, Queens, home of Russell Simmons, DMX, LL Cool J, Run DMC and countless others. His big break came, when he was hired to play private parties at Studio 54, New York City’s illustrious nightclub, and playground for the rich and famous. From there he went on to work for Prelude Records. From the late 70s to the 80s, Prelude was NY’s Premier dance label with Francois K doing all of their mixes. After that came a variety of remixes for the Style Council, Level 42, Paul McCartney, Depeche Mode, Terumasa Hino, Big Audio Dynamite, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and a host of others.
Sound
Electronic dance music (EDM)
Where you might have heard of him
www.beatmag.com
Bert met his old friend Justin Berkmann who was building a new “Paradise Garage sound system” in a new club in London, which was to opening up that year.. The club was none other than the Ministry of Sound. Bert ended up being one of the first ever resident’s at Ministry of Sound, along with Larry Levan and Justin Berkmann. This superlative DJ, producer and remixer has been blessed with the good fortune to travel across the globe spinning records in almost every major nightclub you can think of.
Why see him
Bert’s mixing prowess is legendary and his dedication to his craft has enabled him to transcend time and adapt to the constant transformations within the music industry. Bert Bevans spiritual interpretation of rhythm and his unceasing passion for music is the driving force behind his longevity within the music industry. BAG RAIDERS HUU | FRIDAY JAN 4
Roots
This relatively new electro house-duo was first founded in Sydney in 2006. The DJs ,Jack Glass and Chris Stracey first met while practicing in an orchestra performance space during their time at high school. Originally, the two differed in regards to their instrumental talents with Glass drawn towards the piano and cello and Stracey towards the clarinet and violin. However, their mutual love for disco, hip-hop, and classic rock music provided common ground. The duo began remixing and producing their own songs in 2005. Their work today has spurred them to being an international name in the music industry.
Sounds
House, electronica, nu disco, a vibrant soup of sounds.
Where you might have heard him
Bag Raiders have become a musical sensation and often frequent many music festivals, such as Sydney’s Stereosonic. The pair’s big hit, “Shooting Stars” topped the ARIAS chart in 2011, and subsequently their third single “Sunlight” also entered the ARIAS chart. Bag Raiders has also been acknowledged by Australasian Performing Rights Association and has also been nominated for Best Dance Release at the ARIA music awards. “Shooting Stars” has become a common café song, one of those you enjoy when you hear, that you’ve definitely heard somewhere and everywhere.
www.beatmag.com
Why see him
Bag Raiders is not your typical house/electronica duo. Indeed, there are many alternative ways to classify this feisty pair; suggestions such as indietronica and synthpop have often been dropped. Their inherent love for all types of pre-2000s music has led the two to integrating the best from the past and present. As such this has led them to creating catchy pleasant tunes with amazing beats. Their feel-good music is instantly enjoyable and is for everybody to enjoy. It is for those who love to dance and for those who just want to kick back and relax.

NEW Year’s Wish
2012:
How was it for you? We asked a few local people around town what they thought of the year just gone and while they were at it, what they wished for next year.
www.beatmag.com
What were the highs? I traveled quite a bit for business and leisure, met so many inspiring individuals, and bonded more with my family. What were the lows? I lived out of my suitcases, saw too many airports way too many times, and spent an eternity in traffic jams. Are you better off now more than last year? Absolutely yes. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? I think the world’s getting crazier, but having a positive attitude and knowing when to retreat are the keys to my sanity. What did you think of the nightlife this year? Bali’s nightlife has always been fun and filled with talented homegrown & imported party makers. You have plenty of venues Art salesperson & to choose from depending on what you’re in the mood for. promoter One wish for next year? Gosh, I have an endless wish list for next year. Let’s pick one. I wish in 2013 that I stay healthy. What were the highs? Betel Nut Ubud, (putting content into nightlife), Biku, (putting content into seminyak social life), Tugu, (putting content into Susi nightlife and building community), Navicula winning the opp Johnston to go global and going strong. What were the lows? Blogger activist Massive traffic congestion due to short-term planning. The cancer of condotels. Widening gaps between moneyed nonBalinese and Balinese residents. The disintegration of the Bali Clean and Green program and Roadmap. Are you better off now more than last year? Definitely not better off than last year. Far worse off. Quality of life has declined markedly, I think for everyone. Sense of security, stability, harmony, courtesy, unity, and concern for common welfare has dropped drastically and palpably. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? The world is definitely getting crazier. But that's not a bad thing. The bad craziness is actually being outweighed by emerging good "craziness" (creative, unprecedented events, actions, and movements that are pioneering new ways of living and interacting on earth). The good craziness will transform the current situation of fear-based clinging to long-outmoded paradigms . What did you think of the nightlife this year? Nightlife in Bali is diversifying, with interesting smaller scale events, venues and transitory or pop-up options. At the same time, there's better quality and professionalism among the best of the high-end venues, achieving and exceeding the standards of their counterparts in the world's hippest capitals . . . I’m talking here about W, Potato Head, Metis, and KuDeTa . . . all world-class, in the high-spend tier, and worth it. . . . the other bestest, coolest, most worthwhile area of nightlife is the universe of ever-morphing small to medium venues and experiences, often involving creative, collaborative, innovative, and unusual elements . Think Word Of Mouth, Deus, Oazia, Betel Nut, and the ever-changing semi-legit and legit but semi-pemanent handful of venues on the beach from Seminyak to Canggu. One wish for next year? One wish for next year . . . that labels and discrimination and stereotyping will dissolve . . .and in particular the use of the word ‘they’. It shows a laziness of mind, heart and spirit to do the THEY thing, and a lack of optimism, community, and willingness to see everyone and everything as it is; unique, complex, interrelated, and ultimately . . . US.

f e a t u r e
What were the highs? • The London Olympics • Re-election of President Obama • Nyepi (we stayed home at The Cage) •The 2012 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival What were the lows? • Over-development at Nusa Dua (at Geger Beach especially) • The total traffic shemozzle in South Bali Writer • Indonesia’s national soccer team Blogger • PLN Are you better off now more than last year? In what way? It’s still impossible to find a sultana. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? The evidence all points to a continued rise in the Malfunction Factor. What did you think of the nightlife this year? It suits the nightlife crowd. One wish for next year? To see the Simpang Siur underpass and Nusa Dua highway duplication completed in time for me to get to the airport to escape the APEC conference in November. What were the highs? The high was my Russian tour. What were the lows? The low was not so many showed up at the gig for Saharadja in overseas. Are you better off now more than last year? Yes better off now then last year. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? RIO SIDIK The world is getting crazier for sure. Trumpeter and What did you think of the nightlife this year? entertainer The nightlife was not as good as before. One wish for next year? More gigs, touring the world.
What were the highs? Finding my way back to Bali and starting things with a new perspective. It didn’t happen overnight mind you, but this year has shaped into one of the most influential times in my life, and that is definitely worthy of a smile or two. What were the lows? Lost some friends, failed a few tests, scraped my knees a few times but found the band aids on the way up…. Bar manager Are you better off now more than last year? music enthusiast For sure, last year was a transitional period and saw me wheeling and dealing my way through quite a lot of uncertain territory, so I have to say that I am currently on a better path and understanding a great deal more. Or less. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? Undoubtedly both; Obama, Paris Hilton, Skrillex, Felix Baumgartner, Facebook, Parenthood, the Aztec Calendar and Facebook. What did you think of the nightlife this year? Potato Head has been killing it on big production events, whilst the Mint line up for the year has been second to none. KDT were back in top form for the White Party, then Cocoon had some great shows over the year, and that Black Box thing up on the rooftop in Kerobokan was one to remember for sure. One wish for next year? Daft Punk all the way: bigger, better, harder, faster.
www.beatmag.com
What were the highs? Drinking wine with friends in my garden. What were the lows? When the wine ran out. Are you better off now more than last year? Always better off, gotta keep moving on. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? Always was and always will be crazy. What did you think of the nightlife this year? Restaurateur Real nightlife ended when 66 closed. One wish for next year? Finish that bloody airport and the overpass!

What were the highs? Well I spent almost the first half of the year (6 months) relaxing in the South of France having four hour lunches on the beach. There were a few parties, a wedding in Marseilles and some shopping. Nightlife I came back to Bali not expecting to jump right photographer back into action where I left off shooting parties. First was at Mint with Danny Howells. I saw a lot of familiar faces, it was like I never left! There were a string of other parties, always fun, but the recent one at Hu’u Bar with Diplo was very exciting and somewhat insane. I’m sure this event is going to be hard to top and I believe it was the best of the year. The music was great, there was a huge, crazy crowd that seemed like they wanted to eat the DJ alive! What were the lows? Shortly before I left for France, I shot the Digweed show at Mint. I’m sure I got some great photos, but I forgot my camera in the taxi. I called them but they had no idea where it was. That was a very expensive mistake! Another was when I had a disagreement about my change for a Bintang in a popular bar in town and was escorted out. Because of that I had a major falling-out with the manager. It was kind of both our fault. I guess I’m pretty lucky if that’s all the problems I’ve had so far. Much worse things have happened in previous years. Are you better off now more than last year? Yes, I am busier with photo gigs than last and I have a great girlfriend. No complaints. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? A little of both. We have a lot more acceptance of diversity and choices. Information is more available through the internet, bringing us closer together and removing fears that we are not so different after all. Yet, it seems we are at the brink of WWIII any day now. That’s the fault of the crazy governments, not the people. What did you think of the nightlife this year? Since I got back, some places have closed and more new ones opened. Pyramid seems very promising as it’s becoming more popular. Eatoss on Petitenget also looks good. Hu’u Bar seems to be more exciting with better energy this year. I also started shooting at MBarGo lately. I used to avoid the Legian area because of all the tourists, but it’s a pretty thrilling change of scenery ... One wish for next year? I hope we are all safe after 2012!
What were the highs? Every time I got totally wasted and partied the night away. What were the lows? Waking up hungover with all my cloths on Bungy jumper at a random location facing the heat of a and scribe very harsh sun beating over me like a sack of hammers. Are you better off now more than last year? I’m older. So I guess I’m closer to death. Yes. No. I really have no idea. Do you think the world’s getting saner or crazier? I’m getting crazier. You shouldn’t ask crazy people about sanity. What did you think of the nightlife this year? I think it took way too much of my money with it. One wish for next year? I wish they’d find a way to finally and comprehensively figure out an integrated sanitation system for this island. We shouldn’t rely on NGOs to take care of our waste and clean up the rivers and beaches. This is the government’s responsibility and they should be on top of it. I truly believe we’re about a hundred years behind the first world the way we deal with our waste here and I really wish someone or the people in positions of power would change that.

Homegrown & Well Known:
DODIX Interview by Rudolf Dethu
He chose to live a rock-n-roll life and spins reggae tunes on top of his brilliant career as a hotelier. His choice was to follow his heart and it seems to be working. You are now managing Superman is Dead (my old job), what does it feel like to be in charge of one of the biggest bands in Indonesia? Plus you are constantly on tour. It must be fun living a rock-nroll life, living the dream? I feel great even though to me it is nothing new with SID. We’ve been friends since way back when and I was previously their road manager in 2003-2006. But after I resigned, the band grew up so much and here they are, as you said, one of the biggest bands in Indonesia. The real challenge now is to stay on top without becoming stagnant. Early 2012, SID released their best album on vinyl, and soon after that we already had to think about planning for next year, to find something different, something innovative. Talking about living on the road, I guess what Bobby Kool once said pretty much represents how it is: “The reason I wanted to be in the band was to avoid waking up for work in the morning, but look at me now, I have to be at the airport at 5am instead.” Haha. But I guess once we are all standing up on stage, thousands of heads and bodies moving with the same rhythm, all that pain is worth it..
www.beatmag.com
Are you optimistic that SID will remain on top? What makes SID different compared to other bands in Indonesia? I took their offer to be their band manager partly because since the first time I’ve known them, their personality has never changed. They stay true to themselves, have a humble, non-rock star attitude and have always tried to give back to community. During my absence, we still met during many social and environmental functions, something that I’m also involved in a lot. I’m very optimistic, if they keep doing what they do now, they will be legendary in the Indonesian music scene, because what they create isn’t just music, but also a movement. Hey, three million diehard fans on Facebook can’t lie!
You’re also quite well known as a DJ—a reggae DJ to be precise. As far as I know, there are not many reggae DJs on the island (and even in Indonesia). How’s the public response so far? First, I don’t call myself a DJ, I’m a soundboy or selektah. It’s very different from a regular DJ you find at clubs. From the name itself: it comes from Jamaican Patois. The music, I only spin Jamaican (influenced) chunes: ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, and dancehall. Technically it is a pretty old school way; I don’t always apply beat matching, I use lots of shout/speech samples, other sound samples like laser, frequency and even gun shots. And also my favourite gear, is a dub siren and space echo unit, in my set. I’m not the first one in Indonesia, but as far as I know, in Bali, I’m the only one who’s focusing on roots and culture. Some DJs I know, they have popular reggae or dancehall in their set but not the classics. To be honest, I’m not interested in spinning regularly in a club, and I’m not worried much about the public’s response. I’d rather spin my tunes for a community event where people appreciate the music, not just come to get drunk and dance till dawn. Educating people who surround me as I spin is very important so that the people will have a better understanding of the music. So far I have some loyal followers though. I’m also connected to some friends in Jakarta, where the scene is bigger. It started when I opened for Ras Muhamad on New Year’s Eve 2012 and our friendship has continued. I can say he’s the person that I look up to and Ras Muhamad also gives me lots of support. Now I communicate regularly with Lion Rock, the selektah of Asia-Afrika Soundsytem which Ras Muhamad is the DJ for. We discuss a lot about music and gear. I’m also part of Arca Singa Sound Connection, a collective group of selectors and toasters from Indonesia which was initiated by Asia-Afika Soundsystem. Why did you choose reggae? I didn’t choose reggae. Reggae chose me. Well, if you ask me the reason, I have to go back to 1996 when I listened to ska for the first time. It was ska punk to be precise. From there on my collections grew and I started collecting not just ska, but also rocksteady. I guess it comes with age, I leant more to di irie and the chillaxing stuff, so I started digging for roots reggae and now my major collections are dub (not dubstep). I love dub so much, it has a trippy and hallucinating effect (listen carefully to the delay and reverb and soon you’ll understand what I mean). How do you find the reggae DJ scene in particular and reggae scene in general in Bali?
I personally think it’s a bit stuck in the Bob Marley don’t-worry-about-a-thing-cause-every-little-thingis-gonna-be-alright phenomenon. There are many people I know (who are in bands) who are actually interested in roots reggae but because the clubs force them to play more UB40 and Bob Marley’s Legend, they became stuck. It’s a choice I guess, and I chose a different path. What I do is very personal. Name three of your all time favourite reggae albums and why? …And Out Come the Wolves from Rancid. Yes, it is not a reggae album but the album is about my own roots, Rancid introduced me to ska back in 1996 and the album brought me to where I am now.
So Many Things from Anthony B. His toasting is smooth and he rhymes so well, not as rough as some other dancehall singers. My favourite tracks would be “Repentance Time” and “Cold Feet”. I’m Gonna Knock On Your Door from The Pioneers. I found this used vinyl in a small record shop in Medan and the record was produced in 1974. The harmonic vocals stole my attention, and uniquely they incorporated banjo in some of the tracks too...whoa! Any last nagging words? Apart from music, I’m very concerned with the environment in Bali now. Everywhere is pretty much trashed, and so few people are seriously paying attention to the problem. It has to change otherwise Bali will be no longer be a beautiful place to live. The change has to start from ourselves, don’t wait for the government to take action, join the movement, be part of the movement!
Get Wet This Season.
f e a t u r e
0126 126
Whether from rain, surfing, swimming, paddling in the pool or simply baring all to the elements, you are sure to get wet over the festive season.
S
ome means are more pleasurable than others and while Bali has been waiting for the wet season to really kick in, we’ve been enduring some very hot days and nights filled with perspiration. The Beat editor says it is very uncouth to constantly mention the heat but when the simple act of putting on your sandals is enough to induce violent sweating, it does become an event worth noting. It even has a name, I have discovered, hyperhidrosis. So while attending a ladies lunch, which induced much “glowing” among the girls, the conversation turned to keeping cool strategies. As Yvette of 3V Fitness explains, sweating is the body’s own cooling device. The trick she says, is not to overheat. I’m struggling with this.
www.beatmag.com
Holiday makers will encounter different issues with this, after all the sweating at a dance party is almost de rigueur. If you’re not sweating, you’re clearly not dancing enough. However, for those who work, turning up to meetings dripping with perspiration, diminishes one’s ability to appear cool and professional. Not to mention, your wardrobe choices are decidedly fewer in this weather.
“Sweating it,” takes on new meaning in the tropics, when it takes very little to induce the state. So what do the experts say? A website called tedcharles, documents 32 ways to stop sweating naturally, well worth trying, if you are tired of looking like you just did nine rounds. Number 1 is the old stand by, drink plenty of water. This I suspect is more about replacing the fluids but it apparently also helps to lower the body temperature. There are more than a few strategies that refer to keeping your cool, literally, by a) staying calm and b) practicing yoga c) cutting caffeine (which causes anxiety, and d) acupuncture, which they suggest controls the hypothalamus which reduces sweat. Cold showers are indicated, hot baths to be avoided (gee, I could have written this one Ted). Drinking tomato juice is said to help, no reason here but I suspect Ted simply likes it. Sage tea is also said to help regulate sweat production. Things to avoid include (here we go), alcohol, cigarettes and drugs along with sweet, spicy and chemically processed foods. The right foods include; whole grains, fresh fruit, vegetables and proteins (that has it pretty well covered I think).

Shaving the pits and groin, hello Brazilians, is indicated, and wearing natural fibres is a stylish suggestion I feel, Biasa here we come.
done by a doctor. Botox is also said to be very effective, simply zap the pesky offenders, and laser is slightly invasive.
My father in law was a profuse sweater and loved dancing, so he always carried an extra shirt to parties ( tip 21). This does help to tidy up the worst of it but not always practical on a night out. Lose some weight seems appropriate enough but isn’t a short-term fix exactly (New Year’s resolutions spring to mind). Strangely wearing socks and undershirts is said to help. Starching your shirts allows extra air flow (not helpful).
This conversation could get heated as threats of global warming come to test us further, or perhaps humans will adapt over time to compensate for rising temperatures? Who knows. I, for one, will be trying any of the above I can reasonably access. In the meantime, I will retreat to the AC, sip some sage tea and tomato juice, attempt to lose ten kilos by tomorrow and avoid all exercise.
Keeping your head cool by wearing a hat, is frankly ridiculous, it doesn’t work. Ted suggests using the bathroom more often, which is hilarious. Not because it is cooler in there but rather, useful for having a quick wash.
Thankfully, we are approaching the holidays, so keeping all non essential meetings to a minimum and joining the sweaty throngs of holiday makers where one can simply blend in is a practical suggestion I feel.
Arrive early so you aren’t rushing and stressed seems good advice as does avoiding exercise before important events (OK, twist my arm).
As Ted summarises: 32 tips and just getting in the swing of things.
Number 32 delivers a clanger: Keep searching for remedies. Hormones are shouting at me here, this may be a cause of excessive sweating. Surgery is a drastic yet effective method, simply remove the sweat glands, this one is best
What’s your secret? We’d love to know.

So you’ve made it to Bali. Congratulations. You want to party, but what to do? Well here’s an excellent option for you intrepid party animals, try the Kuta crawl. You basically start off on the north end of Jalan Legian around the 101 and work your way south taking in all the very diverse sights and sounds of the Kuta nightlife and the natural fauna that inhabits this densely populated section of hedonistic activity.
www.beatmag.com
The first place you should begin is the Rooftop 101, a grand place with a sweet pool and an overwhelmingly good view of lands you are bound to conquer on your Bali trip. The cool thing about the 101 is that it’s also a hotel and quite frankly a good place to meet people in a somewhat subdued environment over some pretty tasty beverages before beginning your night in the urban jungle of debauchery below. Plus there’s a pool and a BBQ.
Once done with the 101, you should make your way to a place down the road called Eikon. You’ll be greeted by some very friendly PR girls out front who more often than not have some sort of complimentary concoction to get you in the door. Depending on the night, sometimes the backroom becomes its own open air dance floor and has a pretty tropical feel about it. Expect a pretty diverse crowd and sometimes a load of Norwegian exchange students.

Next up a little past the Bali Bomb Memorial is Vi Ai Pi, a bustling club located up some stairs which has a very unique layout. Vi Ai Pi also has some pretty cool PR chicks which are more than
willing to strike up some good conversation. Live music can also be enjoyed at the club and if you happen to be Dutch, ask for their Threesome cocktail. You’ll be impressed.
sky garden
www.beatmag.com
Now for Kuta’s big kahuna, it’s the behemoth mega club that everyone has heard of and it’s right about time you entered its sacred gateway into the superclub known as Sky Garden. One of the coolest things about the place is the variety of deals being offered inside. Ask one of their very helpful PR girls about them and they’ll be more than happy to hook you up with all the info you need. If you happen to be hungry, try out the 50k allyou-can-eat-barbeque at the top rooftop lounge. The breezy rooftop is an excellent way to get started and even to finish the night as the place packs out later with pumping DJ sounds till well late with a great outdoor atmosphere.
Hip hop can be found in Brandy’s up on the third floor. This club is usually packed full of gyrating bodies dancing to some very urban beats a bit later. Dancers put on excellent shows on the bar and we’re not talking just run-of-the-mill sexy dancers, this is a real show. More dancers are down in Club Cyclone too but a bit more intimate. This darkened room has the progressive tracks and comfortable seating arrangements for when you just want to enjoy some slightly more pressing music.

sky garden
The Sky Dome is located in the back of the club and is where the crowds go to enjoy some quality EDM and all the biggest visiting international DJs on the weekends. The huge interior has a stadium like feel to it and the visual system absolutely rocks. The VIP floor at the top fourth floor on the street-side is the busiest part of Sky later with raging electro pumping all night long, closely followed by the newly regenerated and re-sized
Third Floor, which has changed the whole focus of the venue in recent weeks.
The next stop in this crawl is the very epic Bounty Ship. The place is one constant mutiny and you should definitely push to the end of the sprawling club to get to the ship itself. Climb the staircase onto the deck and experience this vessel of awesomeness in all its glory. One should definitely get on some illusion drinks and dance on stage. If you want (and by this point, you should), get into
one of their giant cages and shake it like those Bounty folks have never seen before.
That’s not all Sky Garden has to offer, check out their Irish pub called Blarney Stone downstairs for a snack or a beer. The cool part about the place is its constantly evolving nature, it might pay off to explore the place a little more than you usually do.
That concludes the Kuta crawl and by now, you should have run into the entire spectrum of people who go out. There would have been at least five good stories from one crawl alone if you’re doing it right.

Muse
The 2nd Law
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
H
aving recorded a first album and actually turning a bit of cash from this music lark, most normal rock stars would probably go out and buy a nice shiny new car or perhaps, if your name is Pete Doherty go out on a booze and drug-fuelled binge to celebrate your own success. Not Matt Bellamy though. Ohhhh no, not even close. As soon as his first cheque arrived in the post from the record company the flamboyant Muse frontman decided that it would be a good idea to go out and purchase a working prototype jetpack. Mad? Possibly. Eccentric? Undoubtably, and that is precisely why Muse are a band that everyone should listen to, they remind us that music can and should be big, loud, ridiculous, outlandish and earth shattering, but never take itself too seriously. Equal parts Radiohead, Queen and Ludwig Van Beethoven, the Devon three-piece are a musical anomaly amongst your average cardboard cut-out indie shoegazers; live shows that resemble a Broadway musical organized by people on acid, shiny stage attire that would make even Ziggy Stardust look more like an ad for The Gap, and an extreme paranoia of the paranormal that has seen the band members insisting that they hold press interviews in helicopters for fear of falling asteroids/UFOs.
Ever since the space rock bombast of 2002’s Origin of Symmetry, Muse LPs have grown ever more outlandish and absurd – the theatricals on Black Holes and Revelations or The Resistance often a smokescreen that, once blown away, reveal songs that actually don’t stack up to much in terms of listenability. The 2nd Law feels different though – still completely bonkers, yes, but there is a more consistent, accessible quality running through it. Having said that, Bellamy was quoted as saying that album number six would be a “Christian gangsta-rap jazz odyssey, with some ambient rebellious dubstep and face-melting metal flamenco cowboy psychedelia,” and he’s not far wrong so it’s hard to know what to think really. “Supremacy” unfolds in much the same way as a James Bond movie opening sequence – sexy, cinematic and dangerous, but with the raised eyebrow of Mooreish (Roger) innuendo cocked throughout. “Madness” is the sort of thing that Chris Martin would love to have written were he not such a predictable bore, and the dubstep fuzz-out “Unsustainable” highlights a band at the peak of their confidence and creativity. “Vengeance is mine/and I won’t give in” croons Bellamy on London 2012 Olympic war cry “Survival” over a chorus of sopranos before all hell breaks loose, but herein lies the problem; more often than not the whole thing comes off like theatre for theatrical’s sake. That’s not to say the spectacle of the music or Bellamy’s falsetto is not enormous fun though - just keep your good glassware away from the speakers. Dan Ashcroft

Environmental Efforts to Clean Up Bali:
Owen Wright board up for auction to help Bali’s most iconic wave
rofessional surfer Owen Wright has joined forces with his Major sponsor Rip Curl, in an effort to help clean-up Bali’s iconic surf spot, Uluwatu, by donating a surf board to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu community project at his long time favourite indonesian destination.
P
Owen has been a regular visitor to Uluwatu for almost 10 years and has close ties with the local community. Owen and his father have been staying with the same family every year since he was 12 years old. For Owen, Uluwatu is synonymous with Bali: “When I say Bali, I mean Ulus, because that’s where I’ve always gone and it’s the best.” says Owen.
www.beatmag.com
Seeing first hand the changes to the area, where dramatic increases in tourism and population have over run the small scale infrastructure, Owen has decided to contribute to the community effort to keep the local surf break and historic cave of Uluwatu clean and safe for surfers and visitors. All proceeds from the auction of his board will go to the group Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu’s plans for a new waste processing system for the beach and cliff side area. The board, a custom made 6’4” by Parish Byrne, is one of the tall goofy footers favorites and was ridden by Owen during the Fiji Pro this year. Owen had this to say about the board: “It has the thumb-tail that I like on all my boards, only it’s pulled in a little more to hold in the bigger waves. I feel like this one worked really well in solid surf, but Parish (Byrne) and I are willing to donate it for Uluwatu, it’s a great cause and it’s where we surf in Bali” For more information, visit the official website www.ripcurl.com

Plasticology Of the many recent issues, trash is now at the forefront. Made Bayak realizes this and has an idea to incorporate it into his latest works. Tackling the theme “Plasticology”, Made Bayak utilizes plastic waste from his home as his canvas. This idea struck him when he had an exhibition in 2008, where there was a challenge to create artwork from what most people would consider trash. Through this exhibition, Bayak hopes that he can promote ecofriendliness and can also inspire people to be more creative. The “Plascticology” exhibition will be on until January 25.

Suklu has his latest solo exhibition called “The Unseen Things held at Komaneka Gallery. In this exhibition, Suklu presents dozens of paintings with ink, acrylics, and charcoal, as well as the installations in metal, paper, and bamboo mediums that represent the local Balinese culture. This artistic exhibition will run through to January 9.
he human world and art are always related in many contexts. I Wayan Sujana (Suklu) in his latest works is still seeking the subjective connections between seen and unseen things in the universe. Born in Klungkung, on February 6, 1967, I Wayan Sujana affectionately goes by the name Suklu, short for Sujana Klungkung. He became a young artist and created progressive work, noting that his birthplace gave him positive motivation in producing masterpieces. With his Balinese background, Suklu offers different tastes in his works, such as local values which can be digested universally. Normally using two dimensions, but also three dimensional scenes in installations and performance art.
