The nightlife people of Bali were lucky the inclement weather that arrived late on New Year’s Eve, at approximately 4am to be precise, didn’t arrive a day earlier and wash out the whole night. But haven’t we paid for it since? I can’t imagine what tourists visiting the island thought of their holiday in the past weeks of monsoonal and cyclonic wind and rain, but it is that time of year and we’re lucky it didn’t hit on Christmas Day and go through to New Year’s like occasionally the weather has been known to do in this part of the world. Last weekend was a rather pleasant respite as we went down to the Bukit and stayed at the Semara Uluwatu luxury villa complex on the south coast. The weather suddenly turned around as the cyclone south of Bali, which was responsible for all the bad weather the week before, headed further away and the winds changed, bringing us glorious weather all weekend. Sometimes you get lucky in this life. And that was evident both with the stay down there and the storms returning again on the Monday afternoon. The weather bureau says that the rain is going to be here through to the end of February, which means it’s time to batten down, fix those leaking roofs and blocked storm water drains while you can. It’s also a good time to get into the clubs and feel the warmth of the latest music doing the rounds too. This weekend we have Australian DJ producer Plastic Plates at hu’u bar, Australian pop rock band BLUEJU!CE at Anantara SOS celebrating all things Oakley on Friday night. There are a bunch of Jakarta DJs in town over the first weekend in a variety of clubs, and Flex and Kristy Lee also from Australia at the Sky Dome on Saturday night. Next Wednesday night watch out for US Hardcore band Comeback Kid at Hard Rock Café – good to see Hard Rock living up to its name. On the next weekend hu’u is back with another international DJ on the Friday night by the name of Attari, and celebrating Australia Day on January 26, Sky Garden brings out the trumps with Aussies Kenny L and Nukewood in the house. Canggu Club also has an Australia Day party going on and a number of other bars around town including Stadium Café, Gracie Kelly’s, Rooftop 101, Eikon and even Finn’s down at the Semara Uluwatu will be getting into an Aussie mood that Saturday afternoon and night. Also on that Saturday night Woo Bar brings in the stunning Thai deck spin meister, Nakadia who we’re sure will be welcomed back to Bali in grand style again. Another interesting show will be held at Pan Pacific Nirwana Resort at Tanah Lot on Saturday and Sunday of next weekend. That’s the Ad Gloriam Brass band from Croatia who will be playing their style of jazz, swing and classical music from 7pm. Here we are starting a New Year on the island and by the looks of it it’s beginning just the way last year ended, with loads of great music and a variety of choice all over the island. Check the details of all the shows and the regular events in the What’s On section inside. Have a great couple of weeks and let’s hope the weather goes our way at least sometimes. Peace out!

mozaic beach club’s when gastronomy meets privacy On January 18th, you can witness the opening of the Mozaic Beach Club’s‘private dining room’ in Batu Belig. This new theatrically decorated dining room is Mozaic’s unprecedented masterpiece where you can enjoy exquisite food under a starry sky and be surrounded by the eccentric Lotus Arts de Vivre. A maximum of 20 people can be accommodated inside, accompanied with tasting menus of Chefs Chris Salans and James Ephraim. saharadja santa fe | Wednesdays Roots
The eight piece band Saharadja was formed in Bali in 2002 by acclaimed Indonesian trumpeter and vocalist Rio Sidik and Western Australian violinist Sally Jo. Between them, this energetic group played a diverse range of instruments including the trumpet, electric violin, didgeridoo, sitar, djembe, sarod, darabuka, Irish tin whistle, congas, fretless bass, drums and a large assortment of percussion instruments. Inspired to a large degree by the free form of jazz improvisation, the band explores a range of different rythmic traditions deriving from India, the Middle East, continental Europe, South America, Africa, China, and the British Isles.
Sounds
Ethnic and contemporary with a soothing blend of acoustic harmony
Where you might have heard them
The band leader, Rio Sidik, has appeared as a soloist with many of Indonesia’s top musicians, like Indra Lesmana, Buby Chen, Erwin Gutawa Orchestra. Marina Sidik – Rio’s younger sister, performed all over Surabaya with her three brothers on trumpet as part of the Trio Stamp Kids starting from the age of seven. She then went on to join Master Band – Surabaya’s most popular cover band. Master Band had regular guest appearances from Indonesia’s top pop stars including Krisdayanti, Ruth Sahanaya, Titi DJ, Syaharani and Andien. Marina and Master Band often performed for government events with guests including governors, mayors, and the President of Indonesia. Edy Siswanto (drummer) studied jazz with pianist David Wijaya and performed as part of Wijaya’s Jazz Trio - an outfit that often featured Bertha, a distinguished jazz singer in Indonesia. The fretless bassist (Badut Widjanarko)’s former band known as Surabaya Country, played at local events in his hometown of Surabaya.
www.beatmag.com
Why see THEM
Their music boasts a fusion of styles. Saharadja continuously takes you to a variety of pleasurable locations, with each track individually poised to explore your emotional response. An absorbing synchronization of strings, chords, horns, drums and vocals; Saharadja use all there is to create genuine food for the soul. The spirit of Bali lives in Saharadja’s music, as they skillfully, through their music, acknowledge the world as a place not void of mystery but filled with information accessible to the spiritually enlightened. Saharadja embraces all that is beautiful and translates it into sounds that awaken your consciousness. It frees your mind. Be sure to catch Saharadja live every Wednesday night at Seminyak’s legendary Santa Fe.

Comeback Kid hard rock cafe | wednesday 23 jan Roots
In 2002 the Canadian hardcore band, Comeback Kid was formed by Andrew Neufeld (vocalist) and Jeremy Hiebert (guitarist) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and were then joined by their friends; Scott Wade (past member) and Kyle Profeta (drummer). CBK was originally intended only to be a side project for the members of other band Figure Four. However, they gained overwhelming popularity mainly due to word of mouth within the hardcore scene. Among the past members are Scott Wade, Cliff Heide, Kevin Call and Casey Hjelmberg. The current line-up is Neufeld, Hiebert, Mat Keill (bass and vocals) and Kyle Profeta (drums).
Sounds
Hardcore punk, melodic hardcore
Where you might have heard them
From 2003, Comeback Kid began touring full time, covering most of North America as well as Europe. They also appeared in many high profile hardcore festivals like Hellfest and Posi Numbers festival. In February 2005 Comeback Kid released their second album Wake the Dead, which peaked at #16 on Top Heatseekers. Two years later, after Scott Wade left, CBK’s third album Broadcasting… peaked at #129 on the Billboard 200, #3 on Top Heatseekers. It was even featured on the NHL 2K8 soundtrack. In late 2012, they were on a US “American Assault” tour with Propagandhi (another hardcore punk band from Winnipeg).
www.beatmag.com
Why see them
In 2013, they’re going do a whole bunch of ten-year anniversary shows for the release of their first full-length record Turn It Around, with their former vocalist Scott Wade and they’re going to be playing songs from Turn It Around and Wake The Dead. The former is a mixture of fast, melodic, positive, and heavy music. The sound is aggressive yet not being abrasive. For the latter, it had Comeback Kid’s music taking a turn towards the more punk rock-influenced hardcore spectrum, exchanging breakdowns for sheer speed and surprisingly more melodic (but no less hard-hitting) riffs. This band is worth noting for their perseverance. Upon losing a vocalist (Scott Wade), they recorded a comeback album titled Broadcasting, while other bands would just break up or play under a different name, or worse alienated most of their fan bases. CBK’s each and every song is excellent; each has its own identity, something that is hard to come by in recent years with hardcore music. A must see especially for those who were longing for their comeback.

ATTAR! Hu’u Bar | friday 25 JAN
Roots
Meet ATTAR! Renaud Deru is his real name and he originates from Brussels, Belgium, he’s a DJ and producer who dedicates a true passion for music and the emotions it creates. He has proven his know-how through many remixes and original tracks, among other things with the band Mustang and through thousands of hours spent in control of parties, either as DJ or an AD for two of the best Belgian clubs of the decade.
Sound
Disco, Early House & Classic Pop
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
Attar! has been all around the world organizing parties and events. In 2003 he decided to shake things up by organizing parties called Dirty Dancing in Brussels. He invited the best artists he knew at that time (Tiga, Felix Da Housecat, Laurent Garnier, Brodinski, Justice, Busy P, Aeroplane, Riton, Tiefschwarz, Booka Shade, Carl Craig, François K, Dj Mehdi to name a few) and choose the well known talents of Stephen Fasano (now The Magician), Mickey, Compuphonic and Tonic (now The Subs) as resident Dj’s. All the town poured into his club to forget about their problems, celebrate and find pleasure in the company of other like minds all night long. Then, he created the Libertine Supersport and history repeated itself. In 2009, with a solid festive experience and recognized as one of the best DJ’s of his generation, he started production and been part of the band Mustang.
Why see him
Renaud is ready to go on the road again and bring the power party night to everyone. ATTAR! will soon be close to you to share his vision of the perfect sleepless night… Very soon, Attari will be at Hu’u on the 25th of January. You do not want to miss this extraordinary evening!

Nakadia Woo Bar | saturday 26 Jan
Roots
Growing up in the rice fields of northern Thailand, Nakadia never ever had contact with club music in her teenage years. It was only when she went to Europe on a modelling assignment in 2002 that she went clubbing, met female DJ Marusha and knew instantly that she had to become a DJ! During her first year she was practicing hard at home in Thailand, but after a few gigs at the end of 2003 (playing trance in some of Germany’s more commercial clubs), Nakadia found her passion for house music and her career changed and in the process turned into one of the most amazing FDJ’s of our time.
Sounds
House, Electro, Breakbeat
Where you might have heard her
www.beatmag.com
Asia’s rising star of the DJ community (but now living in Europe) has played over 800 gigs across 54 countries and made herself a name as one of the very few globally successful females in electronic music. Since the beginning of 2012 Nakadia has been releasing music on a regular basis and her first tracks already made a big impact and boosted her career to the next level. The biggest achievement of her career was when she was asked to spin at the closing ceremony of the World Cup Football at Berlin Olympic Stadium. Only one week after this huge event, Nakadia played in Berlin once more – in front of 1.2 million people at the Love Parade!
Why see her
Nakadia is still very much like a raw diamond that is about to be discovered. She is a unique performer and her sets are filled with life, joy and excitement. This – in combination with the musical quality and her technical skills, is what makes Nakadia so popular with all who have witnessed her on the decks.

As a child, Benyamin Rahyanto Sarmanella AKA DJ Blanco, was a lover of toys and music. His passion for DJing became evident when he was studying at Mt. Vernon College in the US. He and his group of friends entered the seductive realm of nighttime partying. It was there and then, when he began mixing and experimenting with music. His first gig was spinning for a friend’s birthday. After that, other offers kept coming and he was getting busy. He returned to Indonesia in 1999 and began to work in the world of business and despite having a relatively good job, he felt unfulfilled and began DJing on weekends. Soon he found work at Global TV, where he met his current wife, Indy Barends. Today, he still lives two lives, one as the head of the events and the merchandising at Global TV and the other as one of Indonesia’s top DJs.

Where you might have heard her
DJ Blanco often plays in a variety of Indonesian clubs such as Blowfish and X2. Being a very well known DJ himself, he often frequents the Jakarta social scene attending various prestigious public and private events with his wife. DJ Blanco is frequently heard on the Indonesian radio and is represented by Electrosoul. His hit, “Underneath the Ground” can be heard online and has received more than 20,000 hits. His work for Global TV is also very well known and respected in local circles.

Why see him
DJ Blanco is extremely talented and his music maintains a steady beat while rising and falling in a series of catchy tangents. His work incorporates many of the best tunes (few of which are his own creations) from the newest hits. All of which are creatively concocted together and made into an intense set. DJ Blanco also promises more than a good night out by bringing in his crowd of regulars and friends. These people not only know how to party, but are the essence of the party themselves. It is a night not to be missed by those who want to dance till late and meet professional party people.

Giselle Akasaka Music Club | Sunday 27 Jan Roots
Giselle Anastasia was born in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1990 and was deemed a musical prodigy at the age of three when she first began singing in perfect pitch to a song played on TV. Her mother, excited by her daughter’s sudden outburst, identified Giselle’s singing as true talent and enlisted her into a number of children’s karaoke singing competitions as soon as Giselle was four. She has acquired more than 50 awards for children’s competitions and sought to help her family financially by using her musical abilities. As a child, she would accompany her father and sing duets while performing as clowns for various events. As she got older, she began to sing for restaurants with a majority of her songs sung in mandarin. However, her career escalated and shortly before being recruited into Indonesian Idol, Giselle was an expensive wedding performer. This now-famous singer is known today as a celebrity while still keeping up her studies at university student; a combo that isn’t often found in the entertainment world.

Where you might have heard her
Giselle is best known for being a finalist on Indonesian Idol’s eighth season. Though she did not manage to win Idol, the exposure from the show led her to becoming one of Indonesia’s most wanted entertainers. She has been featured with a variety of songs made by other upcoming artists such as Last Child in the song, “Seluruh Nafas Ini” (with this entire breath). Her hit, “Pencuri Hati” (Heart Thief) was deemed to be a hit and was well received by the Indonesian public. Giselle’s career now also extends to hosting and modeling and as such, you may have also seen her on TV as a brand ambassador or as an event host.
www.beatmag.com
Why see him
While her music itself is very fun, humble and sincere, Giselle’s performances have been said to be much more entertaining than her recorded songs. Her beauty, persona and natural charisma have been known to give her live shows an extra omfph. Giselle’s music uses little, or often no postproduction effects (as to not play over her voice); with the only instruments being the guitar, the drums and the piano. Her songs, often centering on heartbreak and love, are very upbeat and lively. Thus, the ambiance created by Giselle, is very fun and light. A must see (or rather hear) for those who just want to kick back and relax with some quality entertainment.

DENY SURYA Interview by Rudolf Dethu
E
ither Bali doesn’t have a whole lot of skillful cross-genre drummers or this guy is just one hell of an adventurer when it comes to his music. No matter the reason, Deny Surya is one sought after player. One of few early 90s era Balinese musicians in possession of enough charisma and skill to get national attention, he’s notched several notable bands to his belt and now keeps the beat behind folk rock trio Dialog Dini Hari. Let’s get him into the spotlight and show him some respect...
Ah, Hydra. You guys were one of the first Bali bands in early-mid 90s who attracted big labels like Sony Music Indonesia and got involved in their legendary Indie Ten compilation. But it didn’t seem to work out. What happened? Yeah, that’s true, right after we joined this rock competition, organised by Log Zhelebour (we didn’t win but we made it through to the second stage), Sony Music Indonesia contacted my old band Hydra and asked us if we wanted to be included in Indie Ten compilation album. Needless to say, it was a pretty simple decision to make! We flew to Jakarta quite frequently after that, for gigging, meeting with music industry people, all that kind of stuff. Even though Indie Ten, at the time, was considered a reputable album (one where most of its alumnus became famous in the Indonesian music industry), Hydra never really landed on the planet of fame and fortune; we became quite popular in Bali, but that was it. In a way, if I really I think about it, that unsuccessful journey turned out much better for me though. You know, everything happens for a reason. As Hydra didn’t really have one, I learnt the importance of having a solid vision and my failure has shaped me and taken me to where I am today. What is your real passion, genre wise? I have a policy not to limit myself to particular genres; I love playing all of them. But, if I really had to choose, then my first three preferences would have to be rock, soul, and groove. What’s your recipe to blend, say, from a smooth styling folk-jazz to full power rock drummer without losing your Deny Surya’s signature? They seem to be from a totally different end of the spectrum? Tough question. Honestly speaking, I don’t really have a special recipe for genre-crossing. To me it’s all about following your feelings, trusting your instincts, and mixing this with your own musical skills. You know, you can just feel that the things that you are doing is going smoothly.
It’s a little hard for me to explain it in words so I guess all I can say is that when I play, I follow my feelings and that’s the key. I heard that you’ve just built your own recording studio. You’ve always been into sound engineering or this a new venture, a future investment? I always dreamt of having my own studio and so I’ve always been into sound engineering since I was in junior high! And when I worked at Pregina, right after I finished my high school, I got the opportunity to learn. I’m still working as a sound engineer at Antida and, yep, as you said, not so long ago I built my own studio. It’s still not really the one that I’ve been dreaming of and it might still be too early to call it a recording studio for my standard because it’s just a small room with mixing and mastering facilities, but hey, we have to start somewhere, right? How do you find Balinese music these days? You think local musicians can already compete with fellow musicians from other cities, especially Jakarta and Bandung? Bali right now is like the heyday of musician brotherhood; different musicians from different backgrounds, different genres, have all started to work together or support each other. That positivity has pumped up our confidence in Bali music—without question we are as awesome as other parts of Indonesia! In fact, talking about skills and quality, I think it’s actually pretty much equal, it’s just because Jakarta used to be the centre of music industry, musicians here in Bali thought that the music scene in Java was better than ours. The internet makes our lives easier as well; now there’s no need to move to Jakarta to get the attention from the general public. Name three of your favourite records of all time and why. Any and all albums by Deep Purple, TOTO, and Nirvana... Why? I would have to say it’s because these three bands have a complete skill set, one that also matches their attitude. And I think having that is what makes an album great; these bands have a way of connecting people with their lyrics. Any last nagging words? Life is simpler when you expand your heart.
www.beatmag.com
How many bands are you playing in at the moment? I mean, actively? Ha! At the moment Dialog Dini Hari is my only band, but over the years I’ve also played with Delta, Trisma Voice, Hydra, Hologram, Lolot, and Rokavatar. I guess in my career I’ve joined a few too many bands!

Should You Be Having That? Taking the piss.
W
ith the recent tragic death of a 19-yearold Australian boy on the island of Gili Trawangan, the spotlight falls once again on cheap drinks and the dangers of getting tainted alcohol. There are two sides to the story: those who are knowingly serving these drinks, or allowing it to go unchecked, are guilty of some horrible things and this isn’t a new story. It has been happening for years and plenty of people know better. The other side is that those who do practice responsible service suffer as well, tarred by the same brush. It is in everyone’s interest to get this sorted as it is becoming a way too often and nasty occurance nowadays.
www.beatmag.com
There are two things I always tell young people who visit: Do not buy drugs unless you fancy spending a long time in a concrete box in Kerobokan, and do not order mixed drinks in good time bars. Unfortunately you can’t get the message out to everyone and therefore it is up to local authorities to make sure there are stiff penalties for anyone serving these drinks to unwitting tourists. It isn’t only tourists who die, scores of local people have died in recent years, those are the ones we don’t hear about. Traders complain that their income is affected when they come under suspicion, everyone’s business suffers when travel warnings are released, this is a bit of a no brainer really.
In Australia they call this, taking the piss. A few bad apples ruin the whole bunch and it is time that something happened to change it. It’s not fun, it’s not funny, it sucks, for all of us. No doubt, Bintang is rubbing their hands together in glee as people turn to bottled drinks rather than taking the chance, but not even one person should die. Arak is a drink that can be consumed safely but authorities are loathe to grant licenses for quality producers because they say they can’t control the production, but this seems nonsensical when locally produced gin and vodka is available for sale. Popular venues and restaurants around the island are famous for their arak cocktails but they themselves police their supply. How can you tell though, it’s like Russian roulette; is this bar safe? Those people are enjoying it, it must be OK? Come on! The new regulations for food safety require that every ingredient in a food item has to be independently tested, even if it is an imported product that has been approved in most other countries. Local products are also now subjected to the same stringent testing, but not alcohol? It’s too much, too long and really, we just want to have a little fun.

here are many different things that you can get up to when you come to Bali. It just depends on what you’re looking for, a relaxed day at one of the beaches, a jampacked day full of adventures, or just going out on the street shopping. Here are some of the things that you might not know about the most popular attractions in Bali.
The Monkey Forrest
The Sacred Monkey Forest is a popular tourist attraction in Ubud, and is often visited by over 10,000 tourists a month. Many people have been bitten by the monkeys and have spread the word of it being a dangerous place. One of the main reasons people get bitten by monkeys is that when we humans smile or laugh. To monkeys, showing your teeth is a sign of aggression. I have seen small little monkeys happily sitting on people’s laps and when they looked down

and smile at the monkey, the monkey’s whole demeanor changes, he bares his teeth back, then nips them on the arm or on the fingers, so it basically comes down to having some knowledge of their behavior. It’s about what we as humans should NOT do.
Dolphin watching in Lovina
While it sounds thrilling to spot dolphins at the break of dawn, you’re sure to find yourself sharing one of 30 traditional wooden fishing boats with two to five other tourists, the lot of you chasing after every fin or tail that breaks the surface is not as great as you think it will be. A much better option is to go snorkeling in the clear waters of Lovina on your own where you can check out the colorful, healthy coral (and perhaps even one of the famed finned mammals).
Kuta
www.beatmag.com
When you are in Kuta, there will be many things that will strike you as odd and that you should just ignore and keep on walking. Some of these things include the guys that offer you transport on either their motorbike or in there run down car. Do not accept their offers, they will rip you off. Another thing you have to watch out for is the people whispering in your ear, offering you
drugs, don’t pay attention to them and keep on walking if your not looking for trouble. One other thing that you will have a lot of is vendors shouting at you to buy their fake clothes, shoes and watches. Do not accept the price that they offer you at first, always settle for at least half of what they are asking for. Here are only some of the things that you should look out for while enjoying your stay in Bali.

A Classic Musical, A Vintage Action, A New Thrill.
By: @JohanJT
A brand new year should be marked with some benchmarks for the whole year to come. A musical from one of the best classic tales ever told, an always-justice-versus-crime vintage action, and a brand new thrill from local adventure at Cinema 21 or at your local DVD store.
Les Misérables Musical, Romance, Drama. Director: Tom Hooper. Writer: William Nicholson. Cast: Anne Hathway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha B. Cohen. As one of the most famous classic literature pieces, this original work from French 19th century writer, Victor Hugo is definitely recognizable, if not word renowned already. It has been adapted into one of Broadway’s biggest-selling productions in the 80s and continues to be produced around the world, a motion picture in 1998, and now director Tom Hooper is making it into a musical he promises to be different than the usual. All the singing scenes in the film were shot and performed live by the actresses and actors with some renditions of the original songs. If you too ever dreamt a dream, prepare to sing along, and remember your handkerchief to wipe the tears away!
Gangster Squad Action, Crime, Drama. Director: Ruben Fleischer. Writer: Will Beall. Cast: Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Pena, Bryan Cranstorn, Emma Stone. For guys who like action, what’s more classic than the conflict between mobsters and the police force full of gunshots, explosions, bare fist fights? Probably if it’s set in Los Angeles in 1949 with acclaimed senior actors playing the roles. The story is about a small secret crew of LAPD who try and is brave enough to take on the most fearsome mob king of the West Coast, Mickey Cohen. Load your rifles and join the squad!
Countdown Indonesia, Action, Thriller. Director: Steven Sheil. Writer: Steven Sheil, Ziad Semaan. Cast: Ario Bayu, Mike Lewis, Joe Taslim, Jaitov Tigor, Miki Mizuno, Carmen Soo. Nowadays, many local films in Indonesia have learnt to improve their production value. This new one is produced with the involvement of foreign parties, a UK-newcomer director, and an ensemble of young rising-star Indonesian actors, with a setting to thrill you. A group of men, a quest for treasure deep in the jungle which is trapped inside a mine used as a military bunker, and they’re not alone? Interesting premise, right? Bet you’re sold too!

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
M
od haircut and matching monobrow? Check. Northern sneer? Check. Supporting Noel Gallagher on tour? Check. Uncanny resemblance to a young Lee Mavers from the La’s? Double check. Jake Bugg’s rise to fame owes more than a little to the ‘I do what I want to do’ attitude the brothers Gallagher laid down almost 20 years ago, well before the wee lad was even born. The experience of being brought up in working class Clifton - once Europe’s largest council housing estate, provides the backdrop for stories that reflect a tough life of drugs and violence, but the twist is that it’s all sung in a folky, sepia-tinted style that invokes the spirit of Woody Guthrie mixed with 1950’s era skiffle groups.
“Wow look at him!” You might think. “What a plucky little chap, sticking two fingers up to the manufactured X Factor finalists and the marketing execs” (he snubbed an opportunity to go on Britain’s Got Talent, but I suspect that that’s probably what those exact same execs in charge of the troubled troubadour image would have you believe.) “I swear to God I’ve seen it all, nothing shocks me anymore” he laments on “Seen it All”, and on “Simple as This” he’s apparently; “tried absolution of the mind and soul, it only left me where I should not go”. All this from a young sprog from Nottingham who’s still a few years off his twenties. It’s no secret that Bugg spent time with professional songwriters like Iain Archer knocking out the lyrics and honing the melodies, and there’s a few incidences where the distinction between naïve upstart and seasoned lyricist is all too clear. “Skin up a fat one, hide from the feds” he sings cringingly in the opening lines of “Two Fingers”, before dropping the wonderfully world-weary couplet “so I hold two fingers up to yesterday, light a cigarette and smoke it all away” in the chorus. He’s definitely got a knack for hooks though, with standout tracks “Lightning Bolt”, “Taste it” and “Trouble Town” all catchy pieces of retro Dylanish whimsy. For a first effort it’s a great listen and the song writing is flawless, but sorry Jake, I just don’t buy the message. If it’s romanticized alcoholic regret you’re after, go and hang out with Tom Waits for a bit and come back when you’re 50. Dan Ashcroft

Geometric patterns are part of mankind’s effort to find stability under the cosmic forces. A German artist, Peter Dittmar, investigates this statement in his latest solo exhibition titled “New Colour Windows and Calligraphy” and focusing on circle which represents the most complete form – no beginning and no end – and is in Zen Buddhism called Enso. It is a real symbol of nature, the symbol of the recurring, the cycle of life. Dittmar’s Colour Disc Paintings are the succession of his Colour Window Series work that he has been doing since 2008, they are also seen as Contemporary Mandals (Circles in Sanskrit) supporting contemplation and meditation. The window in the centre symbolizes finding stability in this cycle (in illusionary manner). Gain insights and prospects in this exhibition that will run through to January 27.

W H O S E CANVAS
Vinsensius Dedy Reru
Dedy who was born in Denpasar, on February 15, 1973, has been polishing up his painting style, impressionism. He started opening up his artistic life more widely after becoming an active member of a painter group named 10 Fine Arts based in Sanur, Bali and has been doing more group exhibitions since then. This time, in his latest exhibition themed “Getting Better: Tribute to the Beatles”, Dedy portrays The Beatles as the main figure on his canvases, the reason being, is not only limited to his affection towards their musical work,
but more of the image of the group itself (and each member) as a solid team and inspiring and dynamic trailblazer. His paintings interpret an impressionist’s dream about the legendary band, The Beatles. Through this multidimensional event, Dedy would like to give a tribute to the Beatles, by means of displaying parts of their musical career and history. The exhibition will be on until January 30th.

Places to The Art Chill in of Jakarta Jakartan
Socializing
Jakarta, one can practice socializing tirelessly day after day and enjoy doing so without hassle. From conversational lunches to tipsy talk over drinks, it is undeniable that this art is best practiced over food and alcohol.
In
www.beatmag.com
Reasons as to why such garrulous habits have arisen in this beautiful city are often debated. Some suggest that this is due to the extensive and now fully embedded “mall culture” that has permeated the entire city. Others attribute such expressions of sociability (and consequently, the unquenchable demand for malls) to the inherent nature of human beings. Being a rather friendly, amiable, semi-social being myself, I am inclined to support the latter. After all, what would life be if I couldn’t enjoy my daily serving of gossip and business over a classic caesar? Living might then amount to a little less than nothing. Call it dramatic and biased if you like, but in this city, relationships are one of the most precious assets to own. This being said, the precise location, the exact hotspot to be at, cannot simply be pinpointed. Locations can often be like fashion trends with their crowds changing within seasons. As such I have just listed 4 popular areas that have a good mix of restaurants, cafes, clubs and crowds.
THAMRIN
Price: Not for those on a Budget Malls: Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia Places to Chill: Cork and Screw, Playground, Canteen, Tin Pan Alley, Social House Nightlife: Skye, and Immigrant Must See: Skye, great views of the city
SENAYAN
Price: Average Malls: Plaza Senayan and Senayan City Places to Chill: Portico, Brew House, Black Cat Nightlife: Red Square, Equinox, X2, Diagonal, Domain If you dare: find a place called Asaf, for dodgy cheap bubble gum tasting alcohol
SCBD
Price: Average to high Malls: Pacific Place Places to Chill: Potato Head, Lucy in the Sky, Canteen, Liberica Nightlife: Bengkel, Fable, Red Line
Kemang
Price: Low Average - High Malls: None, but lots of independent retail boutiques Places to Chill: Café Amore, Vin+, The Trip, Casa, Tree House, Nightlife: Shy Roof Top, Tipsy, Nu China, Elbow Room Extra: Good place to find good food, although it can be quite pricey And there are so many other places and clubs in Kemang, there are just too many to list. There are countless other locations to enjoy in Jakarta. However, nightlife and food aside, the beauty in such an imminent culture of sociability underpins the lifestyle that is witnessed on a day-to-day basis in Jakarta. Within such a framework, it is only through friendship that one can experience the value time and place. Hence, as any Jakartan will know, the best places to be in this city are only known through the word of mouth or right here at the beat, of course.
