Hu’u bar has been absolutely on fire lately and this new addition to their line up will definitely turn heads.

These guys are pretty notoable and they’ll be playing at Seminyak Beach where Double Six used to be.

The Beat is available FOC in 260 locations around Bali and Jakarta’s airport lounges and selected nightlife venues. Check beatmag.com for more details of where the beat is available.

Sometimes you just have the craziest nights around this place. We started off at Ku last Sunday for a quiet sunset catch up with friends, then wound up in Sky Garden’s roof top bar hours later swinging from the rafters and having a riotous time. What happened in between is only for beat black label readers but this kind of spontaneous evening of revelry is such a great part of living on this island. Spontaneity is the key. It is the beauty of it, and while you would definitely not want to be going out and hammering it every night of the week, it a fantastic option to have around when you are up for it. The nightlife hinges on the big events around this office and on these pages, but never forget that the regular nights are also pumping most evenings of the week and always offer something interesting in our beloved venues. Speaking of something interesting on this weekend, we are having a parteee. Not just your regular party though, this is The Beat Party (or a beat party production, at least) and we have a load of great performers on offer from all parts of the globe for your entertainment pleasure. We also have a load of free drinks from our wonderful sponsors - Bintang, Undurraga, Jack Daniels, Finlandia vodka, and Pepe Lopez tequila for the lucky souls with an invitation to enter at 10pm. That’s two hours of quality freeflow, folks or until it runs dry. I won’t go into the details of what the show is all about, but will just stress that it is big and it starts early and goes till late. Some people have asked what the occasion is and basically there is no occasion, but only an excuse to get into some DEEP BEATS later on into the night. Actually, over the next few months we will be presenting more shows around town. Stay tuned to this space. So besides our show at Pyramid this weekend there are a stack of high quality gigs coming our way. You can check inside for the details of those in the Main Stage section and don’t forget to take advantage of the regular nights too with all they have to offer in entertainment and F&B promos. The details can be found of those nights in the regular what’s on section. Have a great two week period on the island.

R.O.L.E. Foundation Climbed a Mountain and Cleaned the Beach

I little while ago a brave expedition made up of the fearless Matt George, a few pro surfers and Coca Cola employees climbed Mount Batur to offer their thanks for all the water that runs off the majestic mountain. At the same time, a team of 150 volunteers selflessly cleaned up the Echo Beach, Batubolong, and Berawa beaches. So salutations and a humble hats off to the R.O.L.E. Foundation for spearheading a valiant effort both symbolic and practical.

Nyepi at the W The W Retreat and Spa is offering a special promo deal for Nyepi, that special day of silence where you are effectively keeping out of the way of spirits. A New Cozy Homestay in Batu belig Brown Feather Boutique Hotel just opened in Batu Belig and despite being called a hotel, it is very reminiscent of a funky little homestay. The very trendy spot offers accommodation for the urban hipster. The interior design is most fashionably retro with a communal kitchen and an elegant common area along with a view of paddy fields. Recycled wood and local materials are extensively utilized and if you’re looking for something completely different in terms of accommodation in Bali, you should definitely consider Brown Feather. www.brownfeather.com

Stereo Heroes hu’u bar | friday 15 feb

Roots

StereoHeroes is a duo formed in France that is barely four years old. These two French dudes are Fabrice Delcambre and Sébastien Plé. Their very first tracks were freely distributed which then gave them near instant popularity in the region. They are often regarded as extremely hungry DJs because they have managed to do more than a hundred tracks and remixes in just a few years while promoting themselves and their music internationally. Besides releasing their official albums, EPs on sale, StereoHeroes distribute remixes for free on a regular basis.

Sounds

Techno, hip-hop, house, electro house, punk

Where you might have heard him

Their remix of the track “Kick It” by Zingone & Nina Martine was featured in the fifth season of So You Think You Can Dance. In the same year (2009), StereoHeroes’ track “Lamborghini Lungz” was chosen to be in Diesel’s compilation Edges - A New French Electronic Generation amongst works of artists like Breakbot, Danger, Djedjotronic and Anoraak. Since 2012, they are now under Om Records and Dim Mak Records. The duo has performed in 30 different countries in between releasing hundreds of tracks and remixes under said labels. Big names such as Skrillex, The Bloody Beetroots, Deadmau5 and Tiestö, just to name a few are already on StereoHeroes’ list of star DJs they have shared a stage with.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

StereoHeroes is indeed a dynamic duo, being so relatively new, accomplishing so much, and giving out free tracks on a regular basis. It seems as if they are an unstoppable freight train of DJ badassery. So check them out at Hu’u Bar on February 15.

Angger Dimas eatoss house club | friday 15 feb

Roots

Angger Dimas started to play the guitar when he was seven and crossed over to dance music when he was 19 years old. After a lot of practice augmented by some sort of cosmic gift for DJing, he signed with Australian label Vicious Recordings in early 2009. His rise to stardom really took stride after releasing “Duck Army” which was played by several internationally renowned DJs. Now, at the age of 24, Jakarta-born Angger has been on tour, notably to North America, Canada and Australia.

Sounds

Dance, electro house

Where you might have heard him

Dimas has extensively toured across many countries around the globe and has played at major music festivals such as the Tomorrowland (Belgium), EDC (Las Vegas), Electric Zoo (New York), Zouk (Malaysia), Nocturnal Wonderland (San Diego), just to name a few. His track, “She Got It” was included in the Ministry of Sound Australia Annual 2010 CD. He has opened for both Tiesto and Avicii in major shows and is a proficient remixer with a plethora of tracks under his belt.

Why see him

www.beatmag.com

Angger likes to include Indonesian sounds in his sets and production, his remixes sample gamelan and other local sounds. He just might be the only Indonesian DJ to gain worldwide success and acclaim and is high in demand with a hefty price tag. Catch his set at Eatoss House Club on February 15.

Felix Cartal woo bar | Thursday 21 feb

Roots

Taelor Deitcher is a DJ hailing from Vancouver, Canada and plays under the pseudonym Felix Cartal. This 25-year old has a punk and hardcore background and played as a bassist in a short-lived band called Dysfunctional back in his high school days. Other than that, he also performed in jazz and funk bands at school. In his high school music composition class, he got in touch with two digital audio workstations namely Cubase and Reason. Using those two, Felix started making his own tracks after noticing the many similarities between punk and dance music.

Sounds

Aggressive electro, electronic dance, house, electro house.

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard him

During his university years in the University of British Columbia, he posted his dance tracks online, and received positive feedback from MSTRKRFT, Steve Aoki and Basement Jaxx amongst other DJs. Felix opened for MSTRKRFT’s Fist of God Tour around the USA and Canada and soon signed with Dim Mak Records in 2009. His debut LP Popular Music finally came out in 2010 with a single “Love” being featured on the I Love Techno 2010 compilation. Felix also did a collaboration with Johnny Whitney from The Blood Brothers to produce the other single in the LP – “Volcano”. Up next was his fifth EP entitled “The Joker”, which garnered a lot of attention and was played by several electronic powerhouses namely, Benny Benassi, Laidback Luke and Diplo. His second LP Different Faces, released in March last year hit the iTunes Top 10 Electronic charts in North America. Again, here Felix did more unlikely collaborations namely with Sebastien Grainger of DFA1979, Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds, Polina (Ultra Music) and Miss Palmer. A single from the album, “Don’t Turn on the Lights” featured Polina (Ultra Music) and was played on MTV, BPM (Sirius XM) and Muchmusic with other singles getting significant airplay as well.

Why see him

Felix’s ceaseless energy that he puts into his performances seems to be winning fans. His punk influences suggest that his next show just might be a block rocking event. Head down to Woo Bar on February 21 to see and hear for yourself.

DJ San A-CLUB@AKASAKA | FRIday 22 FEB

Roots

Hailing from The Hague, located in the land of gouda cheese, wooden shoes, and coffee shops DJ San. Other than his real name, Sander Jongerius, not much is known about this artist of the decks. We do know that he was a member of Solid Sessions trio, which was formed in 1999, but San left the band in 2001.

Sounds

Progressive trance

Where you might have heard him

Names like Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, and Paul van Dyk, just to name a few are strong supporters of DJ San, his sounds were on their mix CDs. He has toured and done remixes for other top DJs too, such as Ferry Corsten, John Digweed and Sasha. Over the years, he has signed with Sony Music (in many countries, mainly Europe), Fektive Records, ToCo, Virgin and Extended Music. Stunningly enough. He has ventured many other areas such as collaboration with national and international artists, such as doing a remix of his single “Kiss of Life” with the Greek singer, Nikki Ponte which made it to number two on Greek national music charts. This track was also on heavy rotation in Spain and Russia. He also had his single (featuring Jenna Donnelly) titled “I Feel You” featured on Fashionista’s (a Dutch brand new fashion magazine) television advertisements. He is both a DJ and trance producer. San currently holds residencies at Vibe (Dubai, Uni Arab Emirates), Sunset Sundays (Malta), Ibiza F**king Island (Germany) and Trance-Nation (The Netherlands).

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

San’s residencies at several places around the world should have strengthened our view of him as a worthy DJ to look out for. If you really like the music of Tiësto and Armin van Buuren, and have a penchant for trance music, you will probably love this guy. Those two big names don’t just support any guy for no reason. So, go to his show on February 22 at A-Club@Akasaka.

This album was their breakthrough into the Indonesian scene. This album was only sold at KFCs nationwide, joining the likes of Agnes Monica, Cinta Laura, Ello, Sammy Simorangkir, Rossa, Last Child, Indah Dewi Pertiwi, SM*SH, T.R.I.A.D and Slank.

Kyau & Albert Seminyak Beach (ex double six) | saturday 02 mar

Roots

Kyau & Albert are a German trance duo from the German city of Löbau, Saxony. Ralph Kyau and Steven Moebius Albert decided to work together in 1995 and were known as Kyau vs. Albert. Two years earlier, Kyau just finished producing his debut record Modulation Experiments and spun it at several parties. Meanwhile, Albert was also doing the same for his first few records an they both realized that they had a lot in common which led to the collaboration. After two years of working under the Kyau vs. Albert moniker and releasing their first single “Let Me In”, they started up an indie record label called Euphonic. Soon afterwards, names like Rough Mullar aka Sonorous and Ronski Speed aka Sun Decade signed with this label. In 2006, they learned to live in peace and renamed themselves Kyau & Albert.

Sounds

Electronica, progressive, trance, vocal trance.

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard them

They’ve had a ton of different projests including Moebius AG, Dope The Globe and Black Emanuelle and their first compilation We Come in Peace under Euphonic label. One of their side-projects, Moebius AG’s single “Do What I Want” made it on the German dance music charts, and proved to be a hit during their gigs. It did not stop there; K vs. A’s next singles “Outside”, “Save Me”, “Velvet Morning” and “Not with You” achieved chart positions and Paul Van Dyk played some of them in his live sets. In 2006, they changed their name into Kyau & Albert and released a few internationally-released singles “Walk Down” and “Kiksu”, and the album Worldvibe. Their remix of Cressida’s “6AM” received a Beatport Music Award in 2009. That same year, they received the International Dance Music Award at the Miami Winter Music Conference for their album Best of 2002-2009. They also host a two-hour monthly radio show “Euphonic Sessions with Kyau & Albert” on iTunes, and to date, 25 global radio stations are broadcasting the show along with just less than 30 000 subscribers tuning in. The duo also played in sporting events such as the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and for the Formula 1 in Malaysia.

Why see them

With all the accolades, having performed in 26 different countries, a huge fan base all around the globe, they are indeed DJs of note. Catch them live at Seminyak Beach (formerly Double Six) on March 2.

Interview by Rudolf Dethu

www.beatmag.com

He's one of those young virtuosos from Bali. Has got himself one of those more guitar, less talk attitudes, started his career as a metal head and once, rather reluctantly, this skinny jeaned guy tried taking over the mic. But that was just a fleeting moment for this string axe loving guitarist. For he went knocking on rockabilly's door and now calls psychobilly home. His name is Leo. Leo Sinatra, to be precise.

Was all good but, times change and with that, it eventually came time for me to break loose from the heavy metal scene. Let me tell you, it was so damn hard to cut that long hair! Interesting. Tell us more. How exactly did this drastic influence-shift come about? It was 2004 and a friend of mine came back from Australia for school holidays and gave me a Living End album on CD. I was so amazed by them, I went over to Opix's house (Suicidal Sinatra's vocalist). We went for a drive, I cranked up the music and he was so unimpressed that he turned off his CD player. I was laughing so much, but I didn't give up and honestly it didn't take long for him to come round. We started studying The Living End rigorously and that really influenced our next album, Valentine Ungu. Surprisingly the album, despite how different it was to our metal stuff, was really well received by both friends and fans as well, gigs kept rolling on in after that. We started playing gigs, gigs, and more gigs and by then we all felt that the rockabilly feeling burning our hearts. By the time we released our second album, Love Songs and Stinkin' Cheese, we had changed our name to Suicidal Sinatra. The album was produced by Electrohell Records, which is owned by Bobby Kool of Superman Is Dead. They'd shown a lot of interest in the band over the years and post that we went on to meet heaps of new and interesting music-industry people. It was amazing, I felt like I'd found my way, musically speaking. And since then, having tapped into psychobilly music, things have kept getting increasingly

People may or may not remember but I was in band called Soul of Speed (SOS). We were pretty popular; made it to our fair share of band festivals in Bali and Java. You know, our very first gig at Gedung Mario in Tabanan and from there we went on to receive The Best of the Best High School Band in Bali award and I got myself the award for best guitarist. We also won first place at a band festival in Jember, we were chosen as the "favourite band." That was some journey! I'm going to cherish those memories forever, those SOS days were pretty incredible.

better, bigger, and more interesting. During that Living End inspired era I discovered Tiger Army and were totally and unbelievably hooked. All my bandmates were just as hooked as me. So all of us jumped in together; like we were drowning in a Tiger Army frenzy! That band changed our vision. We became darker, angrier, and became increasingly conscious of sociopolitical issues. The shift we made in the psychobilly-infused Boogie Woogie Psychobilly album is a testament to that. It's darker, heavier, faster, but it also makes you want to dance like a drunken devil. Man, my wildest dream would be to share a stage with Tiger Army—it'd be totally insane. I'm going to keep being optimistic about that, it'll happen. You know, not so long ago I shared a stage with Travis Demsey, the former drummer of The Living End. Best feeling ever! How did you come up with the name Suicidal Sinatra? Does it mean anything? We were all out one night, drinking and talking about new band name possibilities, fuelled further by a really good friend of ours was there who knows our style. It was one of those crazy drinking sessions, a little suicidal perhaps, and thanks to that, by the end of the night we'd come up with the infamous name. We all started putting Sinatra at the end of our names and it caught on. Guess our fans thought it suited us and them too ‘cause it wasn't long before the more diehard among them were going by the name Sinatra like we were. Let me put it this way, the meaning of Suicidal Sinatra, is what it is; a more suicidal version of Frank Sinatra. Still slick and melodic but much more badass, heavier in a punk rock sense. More hardcore. Suicidal Sinatra is arguably Indonesia's first psychobilly band. In the beginning, how did people react to your arrival on the music scene? Yeah, I'm fairly sure we were the first. It was a bit hard introducing Indonesia to the genre because of the heavy chords and dark lyrics. But it turns

www.beatmag.com

You started as a speed-metal Helloween-oriented guitarist and now you're known as a psychobilly axeman? Quite a contrast. Yep, you are correctamundo. Back in the day I was a heavy metal man complete with long hair, ripped jeans, and a tonne of heavy metal accessories! Was such a different look to the one I have today cause these days I'm all skinny jeans and slick back hair.

Suicidal Sinatra, having been forced into that experience built up my confidence to sing. And yeah, now I have several side projects. One of those is a band called Leo Sinatra and the the Mad Rockers. It's a country, honky-tonk kind of band, influenced by Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, with a touch of psychobilly thrown into the mix. This particular project has helped me to explore my skills using a lap steel guitar whilst singing.

f e a t u r e

092

I've also got a skabilly outfit called Jack Knife Blues which is more fun, dance your little heart out, easy listening. I guess the point of all these projects is to test my potential and also my skills. As a musician you want to be able to gather more skills and explore new music. I sleep, wake up, and breathe music.

out that there were quite a few rockabilly kids out there looking for things to get dark. Darker, heavier, faster. They were the first to accept us and through them the general public got to know us. Then, boom, psychobilly fever hit. Now Bali also has a couple of psychobilly bands, like Uncle Bean and Mad Dog, and I think there are a few more in Jogja, Surabaya and Jakarta too, of course. But I'd imagine that there's at least one in all the major cities. What's the latest Suicidal Sinatra news? You started as a quartet, went trio, and now I hear you're back to four again. You going to bring out a new album anytime soon? You know, we are all family men in this band and thus, family is an important factor. It's true, at one point Opix left to work on a cruise ship so we went from four to three. To have lost our singer, that was a big dilemma for us. I stepped up to the mic but, honestly, it was a nightmare for me. I had to force myself to sing, just to keep the Sinatra flag flying high. That's when we released Los Sinatras in 2009; it was supposed to be proof that we were still kicking. Five years later, Opix is back! We are a quartet again, I finally get to ditch vocals, and the band is ready to boogie. A label in Jakarta approached us and we're currently in the process of producing a fresh album. The plan is to have 12 songs, plus three bonus tracks. Hopefully it'll be ready for your musical pleasure-seeking selves by mid April. And what about your solo project? Is it still happening? And is it as psychobilly as your band? It's funny but, I think, because of how much I hated having to become the lead singer of

You've just opened your own clothing store, with a music cafe where indie bands can come and play. Awesome move! Bali, especially for the alternative scene, doesn't have a whole lot of venues for non-Top 40 artists does it? Yep, I did. My wife and I have just opened a place called Rumble Girl, stocking girl's clothing, and we've got St Lucas's coffee shop. Our aim is to support local bands and create a cool hangout place at the same time. We let the bands play for free and in return we give them free drinks. As you said, Bali has limited venues for alternative bands to perform so this is a good thing for us, the island, and for them. However, as our location is smack in the middle of a residential area, the performances are restricted to acoustic and can't go on till too late at night. So far so good though cause we're full to over capacity most shows and we've had big names play; Dialog Dini Hari, Nymphea, The Dissland, The Bullhead, Roots Radical, The Brews, and Natter Jack—just to name a few! In your opinion, what are the three most highly recommendable rockabilly/psychobilly albums? The three that have shaped the person I am today; all the Tiger Army albums, Living End by Living End, Swing Sinner by James Intveld, and Dead Moon Calling by Mad Sin. Sorry, that's more than three, it's not possible to just list three. Any last nagging words? My life and love is music. People should always be respected for their passion. I came across this quote one day: "What if they're right and I have no talent at all? ....F#%* them all, I'm an artist."

ack Ker is in Bali and he wants to tell you a thing or two about himself. You can usually find him in a DJ booth holding a mic. Hear him rap, see him hype, and enjoy the energy he brings to a night out.

I am half of Gdygumdrps along side the talented producer C Pen aka Magnum Larry and we have an EP coming out named “YUM”. Look out for that. I also have an EP coming out on Funkatech records from London produced by specimen A. under my stage name Suffice and its called “Lets Begin”. I have a live hip hop band named Suffice Plustwo and we will be gigging the world very soon. I channel all my music through this talented band as well as our original material.

To answer your question about finding myself here. I don’t really know but what I do know is I met the dopest producer who goes by the name Magnum Larry or as Bali may know him C Pen. I’m actually based in London mainly but fly back and forth as Bali is a creative HUB for me

5 and a half: Do you believe that unicorns may have existed? Explain.

How did you get the Suffice name?

Tell us how you feel about the nightlife in Bali.

Well to be perfectly honest, my sister came up with it. It just kinda stuck because I am sufficiently good at what I do. Ha.

Big up Love In Tents and anyone keeping real music alive in Bali.

If you had to describe your music in the form of a food recipe, how would write that down? Nasi Campur because it’s damn good and a mix of dope flavors In your itunes top 25 most played tracks, what occupies position 3, 8, and 13? No cheating, we’ll know if you’re cheating. #3 “Timeless” produced by Illa J off the Yancey Boys album #8 “Backseat Freestyle” by Kendrick Lamar 13# “Warning” produced by Cpen aka Magnum Larry off our EP. “Gdygumdrps – Yum” (that’s one of my projects) Describe your former musical projects. Well, I started my musical journey as what you would call an MC. Mainly rapping and hosting drum n bass and jungle nights. As I became older, I got more into Hip Hop and started a band called The Karma Collective. When I moved to Bali joined a group named TR.i.P (Trouble In Paradise) and then went solo and now I am concentrating all my energy in putting out quality products for 2013.

Ain’t nothing gritty about this smooth ass rolling stone. I’m a pirate with basslines running through my veins. I study and love the art of hip hop music. Throughout the years I have listened and loved many bands and musicians and I guess as any other artist I reflect my influences with a twist of me, my life, my experiences and pain with a sprinkle of joy and some tongue and cheek. I’m a rapper/poet/MC or whatever you feel comfortable calling it.

Describe your upcoming musical projects.

Yes because there is a rapper/singer I just worked with in LA named Bobbi Dahl and she said she sees them every weekend and I believe her!

Write down the first few verses that pop in your head. Do it now. I’m hearing too many cheap words, Never a deep verse too many swear words, Material wealth first they feeding their egos, Now watch ‘em they might burst it’s all very sad But it’s just gonna get worse. Hardest part of being in Bali? Buying sun cream. Easiest? Having my bed made for me. This is where you promote yourself, other people, and future gigs. “We are very excited about the addition of the Oakley Pro Bali to the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour schedule,” Renato Hickel, ASP WCT Manager, said. “This will be the first ASP World Title-deciding event at Keramas, an internationally recognized venue of highperformance surfing, and we look forward to the ASP Top 34 doing battle there for years to come.” While the righthand reef break of Keramas will serve as the primary venue, Oakley has green lit the performance-oriented beach breaks of nearby Canggu as a backup location. The Indonesian island paradise is a recognized host to a bevy of world-class breaks, making the Oakley Pro Bali one of the most anticipated events of the 2013 schedule. “Keramas, to me, is the most high-performance wave on the planet,” Jordy Smith, current ASP WCT surfer, said. “Oakley have had their world junior event there for a few years and I’m glued to the computer every time it’s on. To have the Top 34 there, it’s going to be a huge challenge for the judges as the performances are going to be next level. This is really exciting.”

Not only is the Balinese coastline known for its wealth of high performance waves, but the rich culture and enthusiasm for the sport of surfing in Bali make it the perfect location for the inaugural Oakley Pro.” The Oakley Pro Bali will be Stop No. 5 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour season and run from June 18 - 29, 2013 and will be webcast LIVE via www.oakleyprobali.com

Completely revamped to reflect the Peranakan menu, the space has a new attitude, a new team and a completely different menu that showcases Southeast Asian cuisine.

www.beatmag.com

BABA’S One of Seminyak’s favourite venues has steered a different course for its new breezy restaurant and bar, Baba’s.

With lots of Singaporean favourites spicing up the menu, they have also included some home-spun Balinese dishes and introduced a new small bites menu which will keep bar patrons happy through the small hours.

Introducing a new chef, Alfie, manning the open kitchen, whose background in French kitchens throughout Singapore makes him ideally suited to putting a spin on classic dishes. “I am cooking the food I grew up with, the food

that I love. My brief is to plate the food in a more who fill the dance floor by night, and when the modern way so the flavours remain true to their feeling hits, grab the small bites menu and enjoy roots but the dishes are more visually appealing,” some gourmet late night snacks. he explains. The combination of Hu’u and Baba’s has created Our feast begins with babi guling for two, two a venue that works for day and night, for groups, plates featuring an array of traditional condiments families and fun seekers. The Peranakan style and fried pork crackling to accompany pork two brings the venue back home for its owners and ways; a delightfully slow braised stack of meaty sets baba’s apart from the crowd. [Sarah Dee] ribs and crisp-skin pork belly, served in delicate slices, with a bowl of broth to wet the red rice. It is a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. An Asian mezze plate struck our fancy as well, for it’s eclectic selection as much as the delicious, stick to the ribs collection of Asian and western favourites, ranging from angus beef sate to spicy chicken wings, duck spring rolls and bintangbattered prawns and vegetable samosas. For those who want to play it straight, a trio of mini cheese burgers are perfectly prepared, exactly as they should be, and so seldom are; juicy, well seasoned and served on mini sesame seed-topped buns. Desserts also play with western and southeast Asian tastes and the pandan pancake filled with roasted coconut and palm sugar is one of the best I’ve tried, veering away from the strong sweetness of many and filled with caramel goodness. By day, Baba’s is a shady casual restaurant offering the full menu, at night the full impact of the renovations really shine. With a nickel-fronted bar and a lighted ceiling that bathes the bar in a soft pink light, to the comfortable sofas spread throughout and the white-clothed tables.

The courtyard is also being revamped to reflect the Peranakan-style and is yet to be revealed. The pretty pool that runs down the centre of Baba’s is inviting and cool and is lit at night. In the main bar at Hu’u, little has changed. Why mess with success? Bring on the creative cocktails, cue the music tracks and join the stylish crowd

One addition to their menu is their Beef Rendang (110k++) which comes with Indonesian vegetables and an assortment of different krupuk. The beef itself is perfectly spiced and comes in solid chunks that require the most minimal effort to chew down. The neutral vegetables do a good job contrasting with the rendang and the krupuk adds a nice traditional touch to the dish.Warisan’s house red, the Artisan Shiraz, makes a pleasant companion to the rich flavors of the rendang.

ver heard the conspiracy theory about how Paul McCartney actually died in 1966 in a car accident and was replaced by a looky-likey called Bill? No? Google it. Meanwhile, I have a better one, where the Fab Four got all fed up with LSD, free love, the 60s and Yoko Ono, and so had themselves cryogenically frozen and posted to ohhh, let’s say, West Aus, only to thaw out in 2010 and rename themselves something suitably avant-garde like, err, ‘Friendly Antelope’, maybe…? Ok, fine, that is admittedly a load of obtuse twaddle, but there’s no denying that if the Beatles were still all around today, they’d probably sound a lot like the Perth quintet Tame Impala. “Project leader” and, apparently, the one who does everything, Kevin Parker possesses the voice of John Lennon reincarnate, and appears to be half musical savant, half David St. Hubbins – having written, recorded and played every note all on his lonesome, only wheeling out the rest of the band when they have to do a live show. Wonder how long it took to come up with that title, Kev-o? The Impala’s 2010 official debut Innerspeaker was a bolt out of the blue, an unexpected but welcome notch on the bedpost for the buzzing music scene of this remote WA city, and it’s good to see that none of the creativity or verve has been lost on album numero two. Psychedelic hyperventilate-a-thon “Be Above It” sets the otherworldly tone, numbers like “Music to Walk Home By” and “Mind Mischief” sizzle like a sleazy Sunday afternoon in a hippified Hyde Park, and “Elephant” sounds like Black Sabbath doing the theme song to Airwolf. But the real genius here lies in the fine line that Parker has trodden, trying to ‘nail’ psychedelica – at once giving a tip of the cap to The Floyd, Sgt. Pepper et al, but also taking the futuristic, ultramodern sounds of the late 60s (now stored firmly in the ‘retro effects box’) and make it all sound fresh and vital again. As far as 60s revivals go, “Lonerism” is damn near perfect - somebody get this man some more medication. Dan Ashcroft

The Best Electric Knife Sharpener

www.beatmag.com

This electric k n i f e sharpener earned The Best rating from the Hammacher Schlemmer Institute because it produced the sharpest, most resilient edges. Knife blades were dulled by running them along cement blocks 100 times prior to testing. The Best model ground edges that chopped spaghetti squash with little effort and sliced smoothly through sheets of paper, unlike lesser sharpeners that created edges that required great force to penetrate squash and cut paper into ragged pieces. The Best model sharpened serrated knives that cut easily through cardboard, far superior to lesser models that could not sharpen any toothed blades. The Best model uses 100% diamond abrasives and stropping discs to grind and polish an edge and restore its original sharpness in only 10 seconds. Elastomeric guides ensure knives are kept at the proper angle for optimal sharpening. The Best model has a built-in magnet that catches knife blade shavings for easy cleanup and it was one of the quietest models. www.hammacher.com $219.95

This is the ballpoint pen that laser-scans documents as easily as it scribes notes. A highprecision auto-focus lens and 5-megapixel sensor built into the pen scans letters, recipes, or important documents as crisp, clear 2048 x 1536 pixel images. Pressing the shutter button halfway projects a visible red laser frame onto a document, and the pen automatically focuses the image just before the picture is taken. The device has 1 GB of built-in flash memory that holds up to 1,000 scanned pictures in JPEG format and the pen also captures voice memos in WAV format with the integrated microphone. Twisting the pen apart reveals a USB plug that downloads scanned images to a computer. Made from anodized aluminum, the pen switches from writing to scanning mode with a turn of a dial. Captures up to 300 images after a one-hour charge via USB. Compatible with Mac OSX, Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP. www.hammacher.com $124.95

The Odor and VOC Eliminating Air Purifier This is the air purifier that uses patented filter technology to remove odors and airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The nanoscale material in the filter, if laid flat, would have the surface area of two badminton courts, helping it capture more than 99% of micronsized organic particles in a room. The purifier breaks down molecules that carry odor or bear VOCs, the toxic airborne chemicals emitted b y many common household synthetics such as carpets, varnishes, and cleaning agents. A numeric display indicates the level of VOCs present and continues to count down as the air purifier removes them; a colored LED provides an indicator of air quality at a glance. The WilloMD is the new, easy-touse bio-computer with Sensorpeutic technology that targets joint pain. The result of decades of medical research and development, it’s FDA cleared and has been found to be significantly effective in relieving joint pain. How it works. WilloMD uses smart sensors to collect and transmit data from the skin surface to it’s central processor. Then, it formulates and delivers a dynamic digital prescription of infrared energies back through the skin surface to the joint. This reduces pain signals to the brain and opens restricted pathways to the joint. It’s completely safe, doesn’t hurt, and you may even feel a mild pleasant sensation and warmth as the pain begins to melt away. If you suffer from joint stiffness or pain, just place the unit directly on the skin surface where you feel the pain for a 25 minute treatment and it’s safe to use as often as you wish. Then, return it to the charging unit after each use. It’s that easy. Regular use encourages cumulative benefits, so even once you feel better, you can continue to use it to maintain your joint health. www.firststreetonline.com $599.00

This Pocket Socket Portable Hand Generator ensures you are never in that situation again. It features one two-prong U.S. standard electric outlet that with the help of your hand will power up your electronics in all of those emergency situations. www.thinkgeek.com $59.99

arangasem-born, Wayan Redika, is a selftaught painter who has had an interest in visual arts since he was young. Through art, he is able to express his soul and create good spirits that can be enjoyed by others. Recently, he’s been inspired by national and international figures that have been able to create significant changes to this world. It has led him to his latest exhibition called “Exceptional Person” which will be held soon at Bentara Budaya Bali. The exhibition will feature famous figures in various visual expressions, either narratively or symbolically. He also wants to show people’s idealism in fighting for justice, humanity, and peace through the universal principals of truth.

The “Exceptional Person” exhibition will be opened on February 28 at 6pm and run through March 9.

This Spa in The Breezes on Dhyana Pura is a whole lot more than meets the eye.

www.beatmag.com

Look: Positioned at the bottom of Jalan Dhyana Pura is where you will find the Breezes hotel where this massive spa is located. It is modern, yet possesses a very relaxing ambience, with ponds full of fish and fresh flowers surrounding the spa. It has a simple look that emanates comfort, with a natural garden view and colonial furniture in earth tone colors. The massage rooms also let you have a glimpse of the garden and the majority of the rooms have a bathtub/jacuzzi so you can have your full treatment without leaving the room. Feel: Treatments range from Spa Body Treatments (420-525k++) and Breezes Bali signature treatments (275-485k++) to the Spa Indulgence packages (1,250-2,200k++). Breezes spa is really all about helping you unwind and finding balance in your body, soul, mind and heart. They have put a few twists on old traditions and created a few of their own signature treatments that you have to come and try. Every step in to your treatment is bound to make you feel better. The foot massage is great for blood circulation, the light massage helps you relax and release stress. The fresh cucumber or aloe vera/honey will help sooth any sunburn that you might have, and the relaxing flower bath will wash away stress from your body and make you feel rejuvenated.

Ingredients: For the olive oil massage you have five choices (aloe vera, cucumber, lime & ginger, green tea and frangipani). Then you have a choice of either cucumber or aloe vera and honey mixed together for the sunburn treatment. All of the ingredients are pure and not mixed with any other type of paste, so you get the full feel of what it’s like to be covered in honey or cucumber. Magic: As you reach the reception you get straight into choosing your preferred treatment. I chose the natural sunburn massage (420k++). It started off with a fresh flower foot bath, then an olive oil massage with the fragrance of frangipani. For the next part of this treatment, the therapist covered me from head to toe in honey and aloe vera, if you don’t like sticky, sweet things on your body, this might not be for you. Interestingly enough the cooling treatment was up next which consisted of a relaxing warm rose petal bath, which washes away all the honey and made my skin feel really smooth and I had a surprisingly bizarre tingle all over my body after the treatment.

GROW OLD YOUNG! An Incredible Breakthrough That Can Literally Reverse the Ageing Process!

S

ounds too good to be true? Can we really defy nature and alter the ageing process as we know it? Thankfully the answer is yes, and it lies in a very natural process the body experiences that we have complete control. It’s called Human Growth Hormone! Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is produced by the pituitary (the body’s master gland). Like most hormones, our bodies have it in abundance in our youth but as we grow older we produce it less and less. Levels of HGH fall by 80% between the ages of 21 and 61. HGH is what makes us grow and develop from babies to adulthood. It is the driving force and mechanism that allows our bones, organs and muscles to grow and develop the way nature intended. It is produced naturally in our youth and when our bodies become developed it naturally slows down. So why is HGH important now?

HGH when active, also aids in our bones, organs and muscles being at their optimum health and helps rejuvenate the bodies function and keep it in a youthful state. On July 5, 1990 The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a study by Daniel Rudman, MD, and colleagues at the Medical College of Wisconsin. 12 Growth Hormone deficient men between the ages of 61 and 81 were treated with injections of synthetic HGH for a period of six months. These frail, flabby men lost fat, gained muscle and had thicker younger skin. The effect of six months of HGH on lean body mass adipose-tissue mass were equivalent in magnitude to the changes incurred during 10 - 20 years of ageing. He also found that their livers, spleens and muscles which had shrunk with age had regrown back to their youthful size. “The overall deterioration of the body that comes with growing old is not inevitable. We now realise that some aspects of it can be prevented or reversed,” said Rudman.

Extensive research into the affects of increasing HGH in our bodies has produced ground breaking results like nothing else. Not only has it shown to effect almost every cell in the body, rejuvenating the skin and bones, regenerating the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys and bringing organ and tissue function back to youthful levels but it also has been proven to prevent many diseases such as osteoporosis, obesity, heart attacks and strokes. So how can we get our bodies to produce HGH? It is produced naturally when we sleep but also when we do short intensive exercises such as 20 30 minute weight resistance training. Staying on a ketogenic diet (high fat and protein) will also produce great amounts of HGH to the body and you can also buy HGH in tablet form or through injections.
