Well hello there and welcome to our newly laid out Beat magazine. As you may have noticed inside, we’ve changed things around from a graphical perspective and will continue to evolve our design in the next few issues. We’re trying to convey a less is more approach to the layouts of the beat and want to give our readers information in the cleanest and most direct way possible. In fact, the entire Beat family of websites and publications are undergoing a facelift with the Jakarta issue being redesigned into a monthly issue and our website going through a complete rebuild from the ground up. But enough about us, we’ve had some crazy winds here lately and we’d like to believe the parties over the next two weeks will be just as wild. We’ve got Sasha Grey reinventing herself as a DJ and playing at Klapa. For those of you who don’t know who she is and want to know what kind of music she plays, we highly recommend you Google her. The W is also having a birthday with Sandy Rivera being featured along with a graffiti artist. Gosh, they grow up so fast… The Beat is also having another party, this one slightly more chilled out compared to our last rage fest over at Pyramid. We’re teaming up with the Pavilion crew to bring you a Sensual Beats party for your entertainment pleasure. There’s plenty of time to check the new layout of the beat with Nyepi coming up on March12. It’s time to chill out and we recommend you staying at home if you get the chance instead of racing off to some hotel. Enjoy the silence and enjoy the Balinese New Year that begins the day after. While you are chilling out, let us know what you think of our new designs and we’ll hook you up with a VIP card for your opinions, just email us at…vip@beatmag.com

Launched PICKS with Fadly Hard Rock Hotel Hard Rock Hotel’s “Sound of Your Stay” program has reached it’s second phase which is a promo called PICKS. The first one was TRACKS and the third one will be MIX. PICKS basically enhances guests’ experience by letting the guests put their hands on one of the 22 Fender guitars and rock their own room with it. When they say “rock”, guests can really do it with a brand new Fender Mustang floor amp and a pair of Soul by Ludacris headphones to enjoy the promo to the fullest. Should any guests need help or hints, free lessons are there on the in-room TV channel. The launching event was presented by Fadly from Padi and he was given the honor of jamming a tune on a Fender in the King Suite, where he played some of his hits which impressed those in attendance. Guests can now make a reservation for this special PICKS deal package at www.bali. hardrockhotels.net

DJ Sasha Grey

saturday 02 mar

Roots

Sasha Grey was born Marina Ann Hantzis in California in March 14, 1988. In her high school years, she had a strong interest in film, dance and acting classes. In 2006, she moved to LA and starred in a number of films that children are not allowed to see under the stage name Sasha Grey. The name “Sasha” was inspired by Sascha Konietzko of the band KMFDM and Grey was taken from Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Sounds

Rock, hip hop, post punk

Where you might have heard her

She eventually stepped into the mainstream film industry with her first feature film titled The Girlfriend Experience directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven) in 2009. Besides being an actress, Sasha has also showcased her talents in the fashion and music industries. She is also in the industrial band, aTelecine which she founded in 2008. She played herself in season seven of Entourage on HBO. Early last year, Grey was featured in Eminem’s music video clip for his single “Space Bound” from his seventh studio album Recovery. Sasha with her band mates in aTelecine released a studio album titled The Falcon and the Pod (2011), one EP titled “aVigillant Carpark (2009) and four LPs which include “...And Six Dark Hours Pass” (2010) which was limited to 500 handnumbered copies became a hit track on the band’s Myspace page and garnered many positive reviews along with their second LP titled “A Cassette Tape Culture (Phase One)” which was released in November of the same year. aTelecine, despite a new face in American industrial scene, have already rocked the world with their first live concert in Kraków, Poland at the Unsound Festival in October last year. Sasha has also contributed her vocals into Lee “Scratch” Perry’s (a Jamaican reggae musician and producer) 2008 album called Repentance. Now, she is focusing on her DJ career after having retired from the “industry” in 2010.

Why see her

Sandy Rivera

saturday 02 mar

Roots

Sandy Rivera is a New York native who also goes under the Kings of Tomorrow guise. He started his DJ career when he was 13 years old back in East Harlem. He has released under several different names including Soul Vision, Mysterious People, Awesome Foursome, Kidz of Tomorrow, Ancestors, Delicious Inc meets Sandy Rivera, The Committee, Auréi, Organized Noize, Sanjose and Moodbangers. Rivera’s Puerto Rican heritage gave him a passion for latin sounds, be it in funk or house, and in 1992, he started to produce house tracks and went on further to produce hip-hop tracks whilst learning piano. In 1993, with the help and support from Burt Bacharrach (American pianist and composer), Sandy founded Blackwiz Records and again in 1995, he established Deep Vision Records.

Sounds

House, tech house, progressive, electro.

Where you might have heard him

Rivera’s single “Finally” might be his best known track so far, his other hit singles such as “Young Hearts” (2002), “Take Me Back” (2011) and “I Need To Love Me” (2011) just to name a few out of a dozen more have entered the dance charts. “Finally” was released in 2000 under the name of Kings of Tomorrow under Defected Records, featuring the vocals of Julie McKnight, it was ranked #24 on the UK Singles Chart and #17 on the Billboard Dance Chart. It also won several awards including the Muzik’s Tune of the Year award. This single is in his It’s In The Lifestyle album and compilations of top-notch record labels, namely Ministry of Sound, Hed Kandi and Warner Music. So far he has three LPs the Calling (1997), the aforementioned It’s In The Lifestyle (2000) and Trouble (2005). Amongst those three, It’s In The Lifestyle had such an impact that it was re-launched as a limited edition. Those works he produced as Sandy Rivera, would evoke a somewhat club-friendly ambience, whereas those that he produced as Kings of Tomorrow are more radio-friendly.

Why see him

Sandy is truly a universal and versatile DJ and his belief that there are no boundaries in music led to his music having a great appeal to all sorts on the dance floor. Head down to Woo Bar on March 2 for their anniversary celebrations and be dazzled by his performance because he is the King.

Musikimia

wednesday 06 mar

Roots

Musikimia was officially formed on August 17 last year, comprising Andy Fadly Arifuddin “Fadly” (vocals), Surendro Prasetyo “Yoyo” (drum), Rindra Risyanto Noor “Rindra” (bass), Ari Tri Sosianto “Ari” (manager) and Stephan Santoso “Stephan” (guitar). Fadly, Yoyo, Ari and Rindra, as we know are four out of the five memebrs of Padi (another Indonesian alternative pop/rock band) and Ari from Padi is Musikimia’s manager. Padi has been in a hibernated state for about five years, and those four with the addition of Stephan are making the best out of their free time by producing more music. The philosophy behind the name Musikimia is that musik means music and kimia means chemistry in Indonesian. Together, it means that music makes them bonded “chemically”, bridging the gaps between them.

Sounds

Indonesian alternative rock

Where you might have heard them

As for Fadly, Yoyo and Rindra, we already know them through Padi, with their chart-penetrating and award winning albums such as Lain Dunia (1999) (Different World) and Sesuatu Yang Tertunda (2001) (Something, Postponed). Sesuatu Yang Tertunda had approximately 1.8 million copies sold – one of the highest domestic sales in Indonesia. Together with their third album Save My Soul (2003), they were placed in Rolling Stone Indonesia’s 150 Greatest Albums of All Time. Padi’s singles – “Mahadewi” and “Sobat” (Buddy) were in Rolling Stone Indonesia’s 150 Greatest Indonesian Songs of All Time list. The new face in Musikimia is Stephan, but the fact is he is no stranger to Padi, he has been their music engineer all along, helping Padi to earn those accolades mentioned above. He has also engineered Sheila On 7’s music – another Indonesian pop/rock band. Thus far, Musikimia represented Indonesia’ Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy at a cultural event last year at the Chinese National Orchestra Concert Hall, Beijing, China. Musikimia just released their latest single titled “Apakah Harus Seperti Ini” (Must It Be Like This) on iTunes Indonesia.

Why see them

Talking about Musikimia, one cannot help but acknowledge that they have lots in common with Padi. From the familiar voice of Fadly, Yoyo’s drum hits and Rindra’s jamming guitar, we might mistake them for Padi. Now, with Stephan on board, everything will be different. You can expect an amazing on-stage performance and waves of rocking sounds in the air when they perform at Akasaka Music Club on March 6. Head down there and get your hands in the air.

Parachute Youth

friday 08 mar

Roots

Sydneysider Matt K. Von AKA Matthew Gill encountered Adelaidean Johnny Castro AKA Johnny Courtidis for the first time during a mutual mate’s shindig back in 2010 and then formed Parachute Youth. The two believed that younger people are forced to have a safety net in everything they do, but then they would be less creative in a sense, hence the name Parachute Youth. Before meeting each other, Matt used to work as an avionics technician, working on jet fighters. It was different for Johnny, before he met Matt, he was already focusing solely on music in a band called Def Starr and played at festivals around Australia such as Big Day Out. Parachute Youth’s very first track was “It Can’t Get Better Than This”. However, these super hot dudes left for Paris leaving their track untouched. There they met AJAX from Sweat It Out Records, who asked them to polish the track under the Sweat It Out label.

Sounds

Indie dance, electronic

Where you might have heard them

Despite being relative newcomers in the dance music scene, their polished breakthrough single “Can’t Get Better Than This” was a big hit. Its video clip which was shot in Burkina Faso and garnered nearly 50,000 views in just ten days, and to date, it serves has over four million views. That first single also won the Best Song of 2012 at the In The Mix Awards held in Sydney and also topped the AIR Charts, while its video clip, came second in the category of Best Music Video for the same event. They’re still with Sweat It Out and have been touring the Australian continent promoting their sound appearing at festivals such as Sydney’s Homebake Music, Film, Comedy & Arts Festival, Parklife, Newtons Nation and Southbound. Early this year, they released their latest single titled “Count To Ten”, which they played in front of the Falls Festival crowds.

Why see them

Their famed shows always bring about positiveness and are known for being upbeat. See these Australian rookie’s live at Hu’u Bar on March 8 and let them steal your hearts and your sobriety.

Queen Victoria

saturday 16 mar

Roots

Vikki Martin-Smith aka DJ Queen Victoria is one very sexy professional DJ hailing from the Gold Coast, Australia. Before becoming a DJ, she previously had worked as a radio announcer, journalist and producer. The most notable of all is of course her experience as the music director at Radio Metro – Gold Coast’s dance, pop and R&B radio station.

Sounds

Funk, progressive, electro, tech house.

Where you might have heard her

Now she’s a full time DJ who has travelled the globe and shared the stage at numerous local and international music festivals with big names such as Tiësto, Carl Cox, Avicii, Calvin Harris, Chuckie, Example, Laidback Luke, Markus Schulz, Sander Van Doorn, Zedd, Dash Berlin, Porter Robinson & Lisa Lashes. Her first breakthrough in her DJ career was her mix in the Pump It: Vol 6 CD, which placed at #6 in the ARIA Compilation Charts in September last year. October 2012 saw Queen Victoria’s single “Found My Place” with a UK female singer cum DJ Rae (Defected, Pacha) being launched on Beatport and iTunes. This single received lots of positive feedback from radio listeners in Australia, Britain and America. The single eventually landed onto the UK Music Week’s Up Front Club Chart at #20. Many other international DJs such as Roger Shah, Myon & Shane 54 and Faithless have played the track at their shows.

Why see her

2012 has proven to be a very fruitful and rewarding year for Queen Victoria. The good start that she had last year is a strong indication of what’s to come. Her production skills and playlist nods from industry heavies indicate that she might be more than just another sexy DJ. Catch her before her upcoming US tour live in Bali at Eikon on March 16.

DEWA PALGUNA Interview by Rudolf Dethu

T

he term from zero to hero or rags to (intellectual) riches may well suit Dewa Palguna perfectly. When he was just a wee lad he sold newspapers at a bus terminal to pay for his own schooling, progressed to a career as a radio presenter, became a member of the People’s Consultative Assembly and went on to hold a position as a judge in Constitutional Court. Today, he is a university lecturer in possession of some hard-hitting integrity, whose name can be found fair, square and centre at any event, social cause, and movement aiming for a better Indonesia. He tells us that, according to a colleague of his, he is a cursed man. With much ado, let us introduce you to the man... What have you been Constitutional Court?

the

Within a few days of concluding my work commitments, I was “hijacked” by my friend Kadek Suardanahe, the director of Arti Foundation. I was still in Jakarta at the time and Kadek asked me

to take on the position of executive producer for Sri Tanjung, a dance-drama which he hoped to see performed at Taman Ismail Marzuki. This was an ambitious vision, and it was a project with zero money. However, as I happen to be one of the co-founders of Arti myself, having established the foundation with the aim of having it focus on art and cultural development, especially within the performing arts sector, it was an irresistible opportunity. In saying that though, you can’t imagine how tough it is to convince sponsors to financially support performances which have been based around ancient traditions. Amazingly, in the end, even though it was both hard and exhausting, having approached the more generous of my contact database, and by hassling a few good friends, Kadek and I managed to actualize our ambitions for Sri Tanjung. At exactly the same time as this I was also in the process of completing my doctoral dissertation at the University of Indonesia. After the Sri Tanjung project was over, I returned to Bali to be with

FEATURES my family. The relocation was stressful as I was somewhat concerned that I wouldn’t be able to finish my dissertation in Bali, because, as per Balinese culture, I was regularly required to attend community and social engagements. Just as I had predicted, my concerns became reality; my heavy social engagements impacted my workflow and delayed the finish of my doctoral dissertation. I was lucky that my dissertation supervisor, Prof. Jimly Asshiddiqie, was really nice to me; he would send me reminder texts every once in a while, when it was I who was supposed to be the one to update him! Then one day, in late 2010, he decided to force me to complete the paper by the end of that same year. Needless to say, I wasn’t really on time, but I did eventually complete the dissertation in May of 2011. Oh well, I guess the man knew how to motivate me! These days I spend my time lecturing at the University of Udayana in Denpasar or guest lecturing at other universities throughout Indonesia. People say that the Balinese people currently involved in national politics are predominantly grey whilst you are considered relatively white or clean. Bali needs to be represented in the national sphere by someone like you. Why don’t you continue your career at the Constitutional Court? White or clean? Ha! Thanks. I’m flattered. There are a few offers for me to go back to Jakarta— including going back to Constitutional Court, but I haven’t accepted any of them. My response remains, “Please let me enjoy my freedom as a lecturer.” Some people might think it’s absurd but my heart said “no”, so no. Well, not yet, maybe. I mean, you don’t know how happy I am doing what I am doing; it’s hard for me to express these feelings in narrative form. For instance, it feels like heaven to see my students developing strong arguments and getting complimented for their thesis in front of their lecturers. Although it’s quite probable that in the future, after my honeymoon with freedom is over, and these freedoms have become a routine, I’ll rethink. For your information, I’ve never actively positioned myself as a politician. And this includes the time when I was still an active member of MPR (People’s Consultative Assembly) and involved in the amendment of the Indonesian Constitution. I imagine that this is at least part of the reason behind why my colleagues, without burden or concern, put forth my name as a candidate for a position as a Constitutional Court judge, just

like that. What I mean to say by this is that my colleagues had no psychological or political obstacles when they put my name forward. Their motivation was due to factors of friendship, rather than the result of heavy political consideration. You involved yourself in almost all activism relating to the ‘for a better Indonesia’ movements in Bali—and have subsequently been given the position as one of the formal or should I say informal, leaders. Trust me, I also wonder why almost every event, these young activists want me to get involved. Sometimes it feels as if it is because they want to tell the general public that I’m involved so that their event appears legitimate, clean, committed and crime free. The validation that my presence provides seems important. Hey, not only that, lately I’ve been approached by a few government offices, requesting that I participate, or to do things that I’m not an expert in. I was once asked to be a keynote speaker for a human resource training event, and of course I refused. I asked the event organiser why he wanted me to talk and he said, “Well, you used to be a radio announcer and a theatre/stage actor.” Hmmm… weird. It wasn’t at all contextual. I have to say, this “justification” phenomena isn’t too healthy for me; it’ll turn me into a big headed megalomaniac. No, don’t you worry. So far, I’m still able to control it. Outside of school, even though I dedicate most of my time to the Arti Foundation, it turns out that I really can’t close my eyes and choose to be ignorant about what happens in this country. I inevitably end up, at the very least, putting forth my input and sharing my opinion with local or national entities and colleagues that I know. Sometimes I feel tired, desperate, and I lose hope, and then I think of quitting. But I fail every time. I always end up back with activism, and I get myself involved in both a big and small volumes. One of my colleagues at the university, cynically commented when I mentioned quitting activism, “You’ve been cursed. Just swallow the fact that activism is your unfortunate fate.” Anyway, let me give you my opinion surrounding (here I am again, activism attracts me) what is currently happening with this country. We are in transition from authoritarian rule to democracy; it’s not unusual that hyper euphoria appears which sometimes ends up resulting in long uncontrollable chaos. Faced with this bad situation, when the www.beatmag.com

FEATURES A few of the local democracy activists have started a campaign for supporting you as the next Governor of Bali. I can’t be objective here, I’m a fan. I do hope you join the election, become one of the candidates.

problems have gone on for too long and we have been exhausted, the strong temptation to go back to the old days where things seemed to be more stable, more safe and orderly, will show up again. This is normal. In terms of real democracy, Indonesia hasn’t progressed that far forward. It has only reached the norm, and with this we have the most basic of democratic hallmarks, which is our constitution. The further implementation of the democratic norm and democratic institutions is through rules and legislation. Meanwhile the constitution itself is still not final, and is far from acceptable. Democracy itself is not as simple as rules and legislation but is about values; you can’t practice democracy without comprehending democratic values. In other words, democracy won’t be healthy if it’s treated only as part of a political system, it should be part of a complete values system. That’s why it takes a bit of time to internalize democratic values within society. This should first be started by political parties; it is they that need to educate society about democratic values. This hasn’t happened yet. In general, Indonesian democracy is still very much on a surface level, it’s still only procedural and superficial.

90

www.beatmag.com

Thanks again, I’m really flattered. Ok, due to the fact that registration to join the election has already closed and the participants have already been announced, I’ll share with you what was going on. At the time I was in Jakarta, Gunandjar, an NGO activist, contacted me and explained to me that a group of activists called Bali Integritas were having a discussion about the perfect criteria for Bali’s future leader. After classifying the problems and types of challenges that Bali has to deal with, came the next topic: Who’s the right person to be the leader, then? That’s when my name came up. Gunandjar called asking, “Your name will be published in the media. Are you okay with that?” Jokingly I responded, “Well, if it’s only for showing up in a democracy fiesta, sure, I’ll do that. My concerns are more about political education. But if it’s serious, no, I’m not interested.” I once wrote an article titled Betapa Tak Menariknya Jadi Gubernur Sekarang (How Uninteresting to be a Governor Today). This article is my criticism of the decentralisation that is being applied in Indonesia. Decentralisation grants huge authority to the regent/mayor, whilst the governor only possesses quite minimum authority and that authority is basically limited to coordination and limited supervision. A governor has no power in front of the regent/mayor and that law regulates that the governor is not the direct superior of the regent/ mayor either. That’s the simple explanation. So what’s so sexy about becoming a governor? Let’s say we have a visionary governor, one that really knows what to do to make Bali a better place, but he or she can’t make his or her vision a reality due to the fact that the authority, to change vision into action, is owned mostly by the regent/ mayor. What often happens in Bali is that the governor invites the regent/mayor to meetings, but the regent/mayor doesn’t always show up. What’s so good about being a leader in that kind of political system? Many people are unhappy about how Bali development has moved to a worse rather than better state. Bali is currently facing very complex problems and should stop its development and focus more on, say, enforcing spatial laws, reorganizing public transport, better garbage management. We need your input. [Go to beatmag.com for the complete interview]

Kelly Clarkson “All I Ever Wanted” The original American Idol winner on exhilarating form for album number four.

Jessica Simpson “In This Skin” Genuinely irritating Newlyweds ‘star’ dabbles in country/pop crossover.

Jewel “Pieces of You” Angel-voiced Alaskan - knows her way around a guitar tune.

“Right then,” says marketing executive #1 (possibly called Brad) whilst shuffling some papers around on his big mahogany desk, “what next?”“Taylor Swift. Album four,” answers marketing executive #2 (possibly called AJ). “Hmm ok,” ponders Brad, “let’s make this quick. Collaborations. Who’s that dude from Ireland who writes those songs they always play at emotional moments on the X-Factor. Y’know, the one from Snowy Patrol.” “Gary Lightbody” answers AJ. “Yes him! Get him. And while you’re at it, get the ginger Brit I saw earlier playing guitar in studio 6.”“Ed Sheeran?” “Yep, that’ll play well with the fans in Englandshire. BOOM! That’s two tracks done right there.” “What else is hot right now?” continues Brad. “Dubstep?” proffers AJ. “YES! Make her do a dubstep song.” “But, isn’t she a country singer living in Nashville?” “Who cares, we’ll call it a new musical direction. Now what about the rest?” “Actually”, interjects AJ “she writes her own stuff.” “PERFECT! Good job man, let’s go grab a skinny latte.” Now I’m no expert, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was exactly how it all went down for Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album – the unimaginatively titled Red. Those not familiar with the indisputably lovely 24-year-old from Pennsylvania may well have dismissed her as another talentless muppet with a nice voice, but Swift takes an admirably large chunk of the writing credit on Red (10 out of the 16 songs), displaying a lyrical maturity well ahead of her peers. “Here we are again/ in the middle of the night/dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light,” she sings sweetly on the beautiful “All too well.” Aww. Smiley face. “Almost Do”, “Sad, Beautiful, Tragic” and “The Lucky One” are similarly charming ballads that further showcase Swift’s obvious gift for writing and melody. Conversely, the tracks where she shares writing credits with an assortment of others such as the album’s lead single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (like, EVAR), the above mentioned duets (“The Last Time”, “Everything Has Changed”), and most notably the dubstep faff of “I Knew You Were Trouble”, pale in comparison to her own songs, with that forced, ‘new direction’ feel. Female listeners under the age of 18 who are chiefly concerned with the business of:1)chasing, 2) dating, or 3)breaking up with boys, will totally dig all of “Red”, but I just wish the meddling marketing dudes would butt out and let her get on with it, as there is a deserved talent under all this begging to be nurtured, and not, as Brad and AJ would have it, spoon fed. verything about Eatoss looks appealing, from the chilled lounge area that feels like some sort of chic greenhouse, to the enticingly stocked wooden bar that sits grandly at the centre of it all, dishing up a huge selection of drinks, cocktails and refreshing beverages to a growing number of inthe-know punters. Swing on by after midday for a chilled out feed, with a selection of tasty lunchables and dinner options like salads, soups, sandwiches and pastas, courtesy of chef Sapto. Originally from Java, the talented Sapto studied in Malang before moving to Jakarta and the kitchens of, among others, Lawrys and California Pizza Kitchen. He then made the move to the famous Biela Italian restaurant in Dubai, before finally returning to Jakarta to set up his very own eatery. With that under his belt, chef Sapto made the move to Bali to head up the kitchen at Eatoss, where Italian fusion style food is the order of the day, with a little local flavour added into the mix to keep the crowds happy.

Moving into the realm of dinnertime, a selection of red-blooded burgers and grilled BBQ favourites should keep the meat lovers happy, while a large range of pastas from Spaghetti Seafood Marinara to Aglio Olio are just begging to be sampled. Elsewhere, comfort food from a range of countries adorns the Eatoss specialty section, and a star-studded lineup of gourmet pizzas completes the picture. Always keen to try out a new spot for some scrumptious cuisine, a few friends and I decided to order up a few of the Sapto’s recommendations to get a good cross section of the menu. First up, the fabulous Beef Quesadillas (30k++) to share from the appetizer section. Quesadillas are always a good option, and the Eatoss version of soft tortillas, spicy beef and melting cheddar was no exception. Next up for the mains came the hearty Chili Con Carne Burger (45k++) and the Superb Salmon in Padella (80k++) – grilled in a heavy iron pan and

served with mixed veggies, balsamic dressing and basil pesto mayonnaise. For the other two, we checked out the inventive Pizza Peking Duck (60k++) and the cooked-to-perfection Tenderloin Medallion (130k++) with black pepper sauce and sautéed mushrooms. For the drinks we checked out a couple of the Eatoss Illusions and a Tequila Sunrise or two (all 80k++) from the long drink section. With a wealth of other alluring alcoholic and non-alcoholic concoctions on offer, not to mention the usual beers, spirits and shooters it would be pretty easy to hang around after dinner and make a night of it. The club gets going from 10-4am, with a mix of international DJs spinning at the weekend, and the talented resident team of Rezal & Malvin during the week. Spies, slaves, and alcoholics by: pande

Reminiscing about the past year and making efforts to be a better person might be everyone’s wish. Here are tales related to that. The first is about a CIA agent on a mission to track down Usamah bin Laden, next is about a pilot who is trying to cope with his alcoholism, last is a tale of a man who becomes a bounty hunter to get his wife out of slavery. See for yourself at www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

Django Unchained Adventure, Drama, Western. Director: Quentin Tarantino. Writer: Quentin Tarantino. Cast: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jakson, Walton Goggins, Dennis Christopher, James Remar, Don Johnson. This film takes place before the Civil War when slavery in southern United States was rampant. Django Freeman (Jamie Foxx, Ray), a slave, is trying to find his wife, Broomhilda von Shaft (Kerry Washington) with the help of a bounty hunter, Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds). Calvin J. Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio, The Departed, Inception), a sadistic slaveholder is revealed to be the one who owns Broomhilda. This movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, is just like Inglourious Basterds in terms of its depiction over the top action sequence together with sharp dialogue that Tarantino film’s are known for. Expect heave use of the “n word” along with tense scenes and dry humour.

Flight Drama. Director: Robert Zemeckis. Writer: John Gatins. Cast: Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood. This film tells about a pilot named ‘Whip’ (Denzel Washington, Training Day) who is a heavy alcoholic who is involved in a plane crash that kills six out of 102 people on board. Despite heroically saving an uncontrollable aircraft, a toxicology screening shows he was intoxicated during the flight and the resulting struggles really give this film an edge. Many critics have praised the film as a character study of a man who tries to cope with his demons. The first 20 minutes of this movie alone is worth a movie ticket and Washington’s stellar performance earned him an Oscar nod from the Academy. Expect to see strong character development in this high powered drama.

Zero Dark Thirty Drama, History, Thriller. Director: Kathryn Bigelow. Writer: Mark Boal. Cast: Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt. This movie depicts the chronicles of an eleven-year manhunt (20012012) from the perspective of a female CIA agent, Maya (Jessica Chastain, The Help), who is obsessed with tracking down Osama bin Laden. In response to the September 11 attacks, CIA agents were deployed to Pakistan. Maya was one of them. Many film critics commented that this movie is one of the most realistic portrayals of the hunt for Usamah bin Laden leading to the covert SEAL team mission that ultimately ended his life. This film clinched 58 awards out of 120 nominations for various accolades given by many film critic societies and associations. Kathryn Bigelow of Hurt Locker fame directed the film and was given unprecedented cooperation with both the US military and the CIA so expect lucid authenticity throughout the film along with good character development.

The MilestonePod connects to your running shoes to automatically and continuously track the miles on that shoe. This provides guidance for when to replace your shoes and avoid injury. It is typically recommended to run 400-600 miles on a pair of shoes. Running on overused shoes is known to increase the risk of injury (e.g. snapping hip syndome, iliotibial band syndrome, runners knee, and more) and yet there is no easy method connect miles to a specific shoe. The Cordless Neuromuscular Back Pain Reliever.

This streamlined cordless electrotherapy system delivers hours of drug-free pain relief from lower back pain. As powerful as professional equipment, the device employs Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), harmless electrical pulses that block pain signals passing through nerves to the brain. The system also increases blood flow to the area to promote healing and relaxation. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, TENS therapy can be an effective element of pain management for lowintensity discomfort. The compact three-button remote control initiates a 30-minute treatment session, adjusts the intensity of stimulation, and powers off the unit. Unlike TENS systems with multiple electrode cords and tethered battery packs, this thin, flexible unit doesn’t impede movement, can be worn under clothing, and need not be removed between treatments. The adhesive electrode pads stay securely in place for up to five applications. www.hammacher.com $199.95

GIZMOS The Submarine Camcorder

This is the remote operated submarine that sends live video to an iPad from 100 feet underwater. Ideal for viewing marine life or inspecting a boat below the waterline, the sub is tethered to its receiver on deck with a 100-foot video cable. Communicating with the receiver using Wi-Fi, an app installed onto an iPad or laptop remotely controls the sub’s electric thrust and lift propellers for forward/backward (five kts forward; one kt reverse), left/right, and up/down movement. The Electromagnetic Shielding Laptop Tray

This lap tray protects laptop users from electromagnetic energy and heat emitted by wireless devices. Unlike standard laptop trays that merely disperse heat, this lightweight stand’s metal surface also blocks 99% of the Wi-Fi radiation given off by a laptop, mitigating what some medical researchers believe is a potential health risk. Two quiet fans, powered by connecting the stand’s retractable USB cord to a laptop’s port, keep the computer cool while in use. The thick bottom padding cushions the stand against the user’s thighs, while the ergonomic wedge design positions wrists at an angle for comfortable typing. www.hammacher.com $49.95

Natural Beauty March 5 – April 15

Ganesha Gallery holds its newest fine art exhibition that presents a Balinese fine watercolor artist, I Made Somadita. Tackling the theme “Natural Beauty”, the exhibition features 35 of Somadita’s selected watercolors which explore the beauty of Asian and European landscapes he developed whilst travelling. The selected works show the diversity of urban typologies and the rhythm of architectural elements, such as cupolas, chimneys, and pointed roofs or flat roofs emphasizing the specific characteristics of each city. In his impressionistic style, Somadita accentuates those particular elements by enhancing colors or by making the distant horizon paler. Besides all that, he also wants people to reconsider what actually contemporary art means, since in his opinion there is an overwhelming feeling when visiting a gallery which is not only about seeing the artworks, but also about understanding the artworks displayed. There will be a lot of cool inspirations within this exhibition. It ends on April 15.

hat if the element of a photograph is mixed together with the visual motion of film? An artist couple, Katia Engel and Faozan Rizal combine both elements in a contemporary exhibition. Katia Engel is a multitalented artist who works in the field of performance, installation, and video and photography. Currently based in Berlin and Jakarta, her recent video and photographic works have been presented in galleries in Europe and Indonesia. Her partner, Faozan Rizal is one of the pioneers in experimental filmmaking in Indonesia. Born in Tegal, he also works as director and cinematographer in commercial film productions. His art films have traveled widely in international venues, such as Shanghai, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, and Berlin.

ART

This time, Engel and Rizal exhibit their collaborative works called “How Much Land Does a Man Need”, currently held at Gaya Art Space. In this exhibition, they explore nature and humanity which reflect the evolution of the environment where we live. Katia’s works show how nature reflects humanity, while Rizal’s works show that humanity holds up the mirror, not to nature, but to humanity itself. It’s just all about perspectives. This exhibition will be interesting if you are able to put your own perspectives too. It is on until March 31.

SPA

Exotic Spa Tugu Bali Tugu’s Waroeng Djamoe brings the power of traditional Indonesian healing to the twenty first century.

Look:

Like stepping back in time, Hotel Tugu Bali evokes a romantic, bygone age of Indonesian history, art, culture and wellbeing that is reflected throughout every part of the sprawling, village-like property. The rustic Waroeng Djamoe spa is no exception, with six sanctuaries tucked away in different areas of Hotel Tugu – each one a haven of calm where local Balinese therapists work their magic with spiritual balance and healing hands to restore vitality and health.

Feel:

With only the soft sounds of crashing waves and quiet birdsong to distract you, spa guests can choose from a huge variety of treatments, ranging from the standard 60-90 minute favourites, all the way up to lavish eight hour packages specially designed to encorporate not only massage, but gourmet interludes, traditional Balinese dance and cultural meditations. Those looking for spiritual balance should make use of the Kamar ‘Samedhi’ for a spot of ‘medhi-tation’ amongst calming aromas, dimmed lighting and Buddhist ambience.

Ingredients:

A selection of eight organic massage oils including jasmine, sandalwood and ylang-ylang are available, each one made using ingredients hand picked from Hotel Tugu’s own garden, giving each massage that little something extra. In addition to the oils, a

selection of traditional Javanese ‘djamoe’ can be ordered, curing a number of ailments from high cholesterol and flu, to fatigue and oily skin. Made from various mixtures of leaves, roots, plants and the bark from certain trees, the recipes for these djamoe drinks have been handed down through dozens of generations, and now guests too can learn the secrets with a special class on how to mix the perfect traditional elixir.

Magic:

Having come down with a full-blown fever the day before, I arrive at Waroeng Djamoe spa in a fit of cold sweats, with a pesky sore throat and aching all over. After a brief consultation with my spa therapist, I’m soon swigging on a djamoe flu concoction, and getting ready for a 90 minute deep tissue ‘surfers’ massage (Rp. 680,000++). Focusing on the arms, shoulders and back, the treatment involves the application of traditional Chinese balm to ease muscle tension, and encourage circulation. It worked like a charm, and thanks to a combination of the djamoe and treatment I walked out feeling much closer to 100% than when I’d walked in.

Embracing the

CHANGE

W

hile everyone from the nasi goreng vendors to the lofty politicos are debating the nature and effects of the enormous changes Bali’s landscape is undergoing, one thing is certain, change is going to come. So instead of anticipating doom and gloom, the best course of action appears to embrace the changes, step out of familiar territory and give some of the new things a chance. A perfect case is a venue like the L Hotel, seemingly a little boutique hotel that could go unnoticed on the busy Jalan Petitenget. Further investigation reveals the work of one of our bestknown traditional architects, Popo Danes, who has done a complete turnaround with his design of this ultra modern hotel, uber-modern in the speak. Rather than taking it to task for being out of character for Bali, it is a tongue-in-cheek approach that incorporates elements of Balinese design in a whimsical style that is at the end, a bit of fun. The Mulia is possibly the biggest elephant in the room, pun intended, and much has been written about the effects on our beloved Geger beach and the sheer scale of the project, but it has its fans

and what the heck, the thing is there, so why not have a little fun with it. The glut of city hotels are probably not good for much, except cheap rooms, but we have little choice but to accept them also and some, like Legian 101, have managed to inject a little character into the place, it certainly is fun checking the legs in the glass-fronted pool when strollingdown Jalan Legian. New coffee shops, spas, restaurants, hotels, villas, galleries and much more spring up all the time, why not step out of your comfort zone and try something new? It can’t hurt and you may discover things you like alongside those you don’t. Change is going to come, whether we like it or not, and it can’t all be bad. Try something new, they say it is good for the brain and improves your mood to experiment a little. It’s easy to get complacent and hold on to the past. Step over to the wild side and keep an open mind about the changes we are all going through and you might discover a whole new side to Bali you like more than you think you will. There’s a challenge, let us know how it goes. [Sarah Dee]
