It’s
the day before Nyepi (well it was when I wrote this) and things are pretty frantic as we try to get everything done before the entire island shuts down for an entire day. The general atmosphere before Nyepi can be relatively rushed as many people make last minute plans on where and with whom to spend an entire day with in isolation. It’s the time where you generally try to avoid being trapped with someone who you believe will annoy you. We hope you found the right person or those people and enjoyed the silence. Nyepi signifies the beginning of the New Year locally and here we go again for another year as the weather gets better (normally) and things start to fire up for another glorious busy season on the island. Next week the Bali Spirit Festival is on again. There will be plenty of healthy, soulful people in Ubud for the yoga and spiritual side of things and the music events on all three nights of the weekend offer some great entertainers from around the world. Don’t miss it and remember there is a special VIP Tent set up next to the stage of which we are sponsoring so all the more reason to get your boogie on in Ubud next weekend. If you’re into house and trance, there are a multitude of DJs on their way to venues all over town. Surfer Bruce Irons is also performing on waves at Keramas’ Komune resort. We made a special HereNow for him in the surf section of the magazine. You can find all the information you need to get to the right places at the right time in the Main Stage, Regular and HereNow sections inside. We have another event this weekend, Saturday March 16 at Pavilion in Batubelig. Sensual Beats features DJs Lee Getts and Damian Saint spinning some very sexy deep house for your aural pleasure. Undurraga is supplying some welcome drinks. See you there.

Ubud Village Jazz Festival Brings Together International Artists If you happen to love the ambience of Ubud and also have a penchant for jazz, you might want to check out Ubud Village Jazz Festival (UVJF). René Lezare
SUNDAY 17 mar
Roots
Despite his first name being René, this DJ – René Lezare, was actually born in Aachen, Germany, not in France. We just want to clear that up. He’s been in the business of playing music so people may dance since 1997, and that same year, René founded a booking agency called Freak. From 1997 up until 2008, he has been organizing while also being a resident at Aixtreme parties. In 2000, René played production and live gigs under his newlyestablished a duo called Elektrik Underwear. Soon after that, he was employed as a resident at clubs outside of Germany, notably Ibiza, Spain, where he is currently based.
Sounds
Ambient, house, techhouse, deephouse, electro-lounge, nu-disco.
Where you might have heard him
From 2000 all the way to the year 2007, René was a resident at M-Longe Aachen, Café Madrid in Aachen, Bagus Ibiza - Oriental Cuisine, Guarana Salinas Ibiza, B Friday Deluxe @ Delano Beach Ibiza. He performed in various clubs in different countries including Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain. Playing in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Essen he quickly became relatively famous in the German scene. 2007 saw him founding a music studio called Eleria Hills Productions in Ibiza, Spain. With his career progressing, he started working at more international clubs and festivals such as Boatparty in Maastricht, the Netherlands and Solar in Berlin, Germany. He has released two singles, the first titled “Morocco” which was included in Mountain Deluxe (2010) and “Sol” featuring Q DeRhino (2011), which was in Lechor (2009).
Why see him
Heavily into the German and Ibiza scene and having been a resident at several places around the world, this guy will probably go above and beyond what is necessary for an epic night of EDM. Check him out at Cocoon Beach Club on March 17.

Phonique
friday 22 mar
Roots
Phonique AKA Michael Vater is a DJ hailing from Berlin, Germany. Despite having a German word “vater” in his name, many of his musical influences are from France. Frequent visits to Paris has had a noticeable impact on his style. In 1995, he moved to Berlin to work as a promoter and successfully organized many parties and brought the hottest DJs around to many clubs in Berlin. Since the early 1990s, he already collected dozens of house records and finally in 1997, his passion for house and dance music was just too much to internalize and he soon became a DJ. And thus, the legend of Phonique was born.
Sounds
Electronica, house, lounge.
Where you might have heard him
Phonique’s penchant for travelling has had him DJing all across the crazy world of ours. He regularly performed at clubs in Helsinki, Paris, London, Marseille, Vienna, Brussels, San Francisco, Prague, São Paulo and Tel Aviv. So far, his released music and remixes have been on many labels from Germany, Belgium, Britain, France and the USA. Besides his prowess as a DJ, he is also a skillful remixer and track editor and his portfolio is an impressive one. His most notable remixes were for a Berlin pop rock phenomenon Rosenstolz and for Morcheeba’s vocalist, Skye’s, solo project. 2004 proved to be a very rewarding year for him, when his second 12-inch single, ”The Red Dress” reached number one on the official German Club Charts and played on European DJs’ music sets. His album released in the same year titled Identification also garnered international positive reviews and made it onto the iTunes’ dance download charts. Finally, in 2008, he was awarded with the Beatport Award - Best Deep House Artist and Ibiza DJ Award - Best Deep House DJ.
Why see him
Having built up his skills and experiences internationally, Phonique’s has the best of both worlds - Paris’ and Berlin’s vibrant and blaring music scene. If you want to see what all this fuss is about, head down to Mint on March 22.

TrusMe
saturday 23 mar
Roots
Trus’me’s name before his transformation into a DJ was the very plain David James Wolstencroft. Trus’me sometimes also goes under other monikers, aka ™, or simply David Wolstencroft. Manchester, a city that is arguably up there in the world of EDM was his home town and after dabbling with a few more conventional instruments, it was only natural that the city bred a worthy DJ for the masses.
Sounds
House, techno, deep house, tech house, disco.
Where you might have heard him
Trus’me’s rise to stardom occurred when his debut vinyl release which contained three singles, notably the hit single “Nards” smashed into the US house and disco music scenes. He further launched two more vinyl releases under the same label, Chicago’s Still Music label, titled “U Feelin’ It” (2007) and “W.A.R” (2007). This, together with strong support by the likes of Ashley Beedle, Juan Atkins, Mad Matts, Gilles Peterson and Chez Damier meant that he was getting some recognition and soon he was off from Manchester to Tokyo. In November 2007, his debut album Working Night$ finally dropped with a touch of funk and soul in it. Trus’me also has his own music label called Prime Numbers Records which was created in 2008 and focuses on underground house, techno and deep disco from both sides of the Atlantic housing names like Fudge Fingas, Nick Sinna and Linkwood. Just last month, he released his latest album called Treat Me Right, which was said to be one of best albums of the decade by Fact magazine. His remixing ability is also evident in his remixes for Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir’s “Arise”.
Why see him
This Manchester veteran DJ and music producer has earned countless positive feedback for his music from his fans in all the continents of the world... well, except Antarctica. See him performing live at Mint on March 23.

Spencer Parker
saturday 23 MAR
Roots
Spencer Parker is yet another transnational DJ, who has British and German flavors in his music. Originally hailing from London, Spencer is now based in Berlin, a city famous for its underground house and techno scene. Apart from being a DJ, he has also been a producer, an exceptional one, and when he started producing in 2005, he found his debut works being released under well-known labels, like Tsuba, Liebe*Detail, Saved, Nite Grooves, Word and Sound, Buzzin’ Fly, King Street, Ovum and Rekids.
Sounds
House, techno.
Where you might have heard him
Parker so far has done remixes for several artists, such as for Dole & Kom (which was his first remix ever to be released under Tsuba label), and then three years later, 2009, he was tasked to remix for Rekids’ first compilation – Rekids Revolution. In his adopted hometown, Berlin, he toured all of the major clubs including Watergate, Bar 25, Arena, Wilde Renate and Weekend. Recently, he rocked some of the best clubs in the world, including Rex Club (Paris), Womb (Tokyo), Fabric (London), Barraca (Valencia) and Panorama Bar (Berlin). Spencer is currently focusing on his new separate, vinyl only label called Work Them Records, which is the main label amongst his three music production labels. He released A Gun For Hire which was released in autumn 2011 and was well received.
Why see him
The W has a knack for selecting some of the best DJs around and Spencer Parker seems to be no exception to that rule. For an excellent night of house and techno, check out Woo Bar on March 23.

DJ Chantal Dewi
friday 29 MAR
Roots
DJ Chantal Dewi aka FDJ Chantal is an Indonesian female DJ with Javanese, Moluccan, Dutch and German ancestries. If you happened to have a look at her fabulous figure and thought that this beautiful lady used to be a model, then you are right. She once represented Giorgio Armani, Chanel and DKNY on the catwalks. Her pictures can be mostly seen on the covers of various magazines including FHM Indonesia and she’s also appeared on a few television commercials. She was an actress in an Indonesian film once and a model for a video clip of an Indonesian band, Nidji.
Sounds
House, electro house, progressive, tech house, techno
Where you might have heard HER
FDJ Chantal spent many years modeling in cities like Hong Kong (Elite Hong Kong), Singapore, Bangkok (Red Models Bangkok), Seoul, Amsterdam and Jakarta (Fame Management Jakarta). She had a passion for music when she started to mix songs all by herself back in 2007, amidst her being a professional world-class model. In 2010, she took a DJing short course at 1945 Music Factory (MF) DJ school and eventually signed with 1945MF management, marking the start of her DJing career. Her combo of physical beauty and an understanding of progressive and house music are indeed good assets for her. Soon after she joined the 1945MF management, bookings requests came from all over Indonesia, including some of the top-notch clubs. Numerous music events and festivals also featured her as one of the main performers. Her name and fame in the DJ scene is often compared to other Indonesian female DJs.
Why see HER
So if you enjoy a pretty face that knows how to make people dance from behind the decks, this is your ticket to some fun. Catch her live performance at ZJ’s Bar & Lounge @ Mulia Bali on March 29.

Jesse García is a Spanish DJ, coming from Barcelona, Spain. When one asks about his profession, he will say that he is both a professional DJ and a producer, with 20 and 10 years of experience in each of those respectively. He has gained quite a number of successes when he was under Tribal Spain and Electric Spain labels in 2003, under which Jesse released a few tracks including “Lanzarote” and “Ibiza”, his first ones to touch worldwide house music fans’ hearts.
Sounds
Electronica, house.
Where you might have heard him
2008 saw him getting his first win at the Beatport Awards as the best house artist beating other nominees such as Axwell, Robbie Rivera, Dirty South to name a few. Jesse’s commendable track titled, “Off Da Hook”, released in March 2007, which peaked at Beatport chart was the one leading him to make the podium. This particular track was also in the Top 10 list of the Australian best-selling tracks chart. Even The Ministry of Sound UK included it in their famous compilation records. The same goes for Roger Sanchez, a New Yorker house music DJ, who put Jesse’s track in three of his own Release Yourself compilation albums series. Roger Sanchez’s label, Stealth Records, had also featured Jesse García as a repeat performer or more like a resident DJ in that sense in their series of club parties called Stealth Live! Having collaborated with a Grammy Award winner is indeed no mean feat for Jesse, it was Jesse’s famous track “Let’s get happy” that first attracted Roger Sanchez, who later on released it under his label which soon became a classic. Jesse has also done a few remixes, such as for Corey Andrew’s “Move your Body”, which reached number two in Beatport Top 100.
Why see him
Jesse was the first Spaniard to receive a Beatport Award. Hailing from Barcelona, a city that is full of underground clubs, one could probably assume he knows his way around the decks as well as the bars. Get ready for some deep house music by Jesse García at Cocoon Beach Club on March 30.

etails, details, details, and the difference between winners and losers, losers think about losing. No such thing about Andre, the man on the red carpet or so finds out Salvador Bali.
S.B. Begin the begin. A.I I’m from The Hague, Holland and married to Ester. I have two children, boy and girl. I’m 49 years old and have been living in Bali for seven years. S.B. Some culinary background if you will. A.I, I worked in F&B for a long time and have had my own restaurant for 14 years, that started when I was 30 of age. S.B. Did you go to culinary school as well? A.I. No, I was a construction engineer. S.B. You don’t say, that’s a whole other ball game. Where did the turn around come from? A.I. During my study I had side jobs in bars and restaurants and I started to like it more and more. It seemed to me this was where real life was, office people seemed unreal, playing the role from nine to five, then meeting these same people going out to a bar or restaurant you see somebody else. So eventually my choice was to go the other way.
90
www.beatmag.com
S.B. O.K. you like the restaurant business and planning on opening your own shop, but what did you know about the culinary arts? A.I. I learned by osmosis, I started when I was 16, being an assistant during holiday’s etcetera and of course I had study courses. So after 33 years of this, I know how to cook and I know when something is wrong, even if I don’t know the exact recipe of a sauce, I can tell the chef there’s too much salt or add a little bit more cream. As for me, I never wanted to be in the kitchen. S.B. It’s another sort of nine to five. A.I. Yeah, yeah, it’s sweating and hard work, so yes, I let the chef’s do it, but I make sure it’s right. S.B. Were your past restaurants the same concept as the Red Carpet Champagne Bar? A.I. No, I took over my restaurant in the 90s and in that time in Holland you had these brown accident style bars, and in that time, people were not going to restaurants, there was a gap, and then you saw more and more bars serving food. So

this bar I took over became a restaurant, an old wooden Irish pub atmosphere with 40 seats. After a few years I had extended it to 180 seats. I bought the building around the corner and connecting that with basement seating as well. S.B. So you were a trail blazer, basically you were one of the reasons of change on the scene? A.I. I always had this, to grab something and change it, simply because I’m also a construction engineer. Nobody holds me down by saying this is impossible. When they say it’s impossible, I know I’m on the right track. When I started here in Bali, they all said it wouldn’t work.
S.B. Which leads us to your fashion shows? A.I. My wife Ester used to be a model, so she has a lot of experience in fashion shows, walking and how it works, how to handle models and Patricia who is a good friend with a show business background as a choreographer. Actually we come from the same city. S.B. Recently you have expanded to Singapore? A.I I believe this concept could be put everywhere, starting it and doing some fine tuning, loose ends and at a point where we can copy this all over the world. It’s a big step, but at the same time Singapore shows it can be done.
S.B. Jokes on them, instant successes, what is the formula and concept? A.I. Actually it’s sort of a local bar, but with service of the highest standard, mind you, not for the ultra rich people, but for local and tourist people, making sure they have a good time. The aim is better service and quality than the other places with friendly pricing. Beer on the other hand is a bit more expensive, but to understand, they get cold towels, free glasses of water being refilled, free flow canapés every fifteen minutes. To make this affordable, the price is raised a little bit. As for the rest, it’s the same prices that you find everywhere else. We have two managers on the floor helping to create a good atmosphere and if there’s a problem with the staff, confusion or insecurity, they are there to help. Valet parking as well, all in all, working as a team.
S.B. Coming from Bali, the Singaporean mind set is completely different. How did you deal with that? A.I I wondered about that myself, but after a year, trial and error I figured out the system, now more than a year and a half down the line, we’re making money there. My choice for Singapore was motivated by people saying it’s impossible.
S.B. How about the entertainment factor? A.I. We have the biggest video collection in Bali, probably anywhere, more than 30,000 video clips, and everyone has gone through my ears to be assorted in categories, collecting new ones all the time, and they go into the uncut files where I edit on evenings. I have to do this by myself because it’s my concept. Some people like it and some people don’t, c’est la vie.
S.B. Whew, impressive. A.I. Yeah, it’s really that big. We are now in the process of working everything out to apply for this. I have partners who can bring in music, weddings, entertainment, corporation events, give it a name? All the players have to bring something extra to the plate. I do the F&B, partner does corporate events, another who does the Java Jazz Festival, and he has coffee with B.B. King, like that.
S.B. You also have a boutique upstairs that many people are not aware of? A.I. The shop upstairs is for everything you need for a naughty week or for a funny moon, it’s actually a boutique with all the clothing added, upper market adult tops, scents with taste, vibrating lipstick and such.
S.B. So here we have it, a man on the go who can’t be stopped, all the more power to you champ.
S.B. Are there other plans for Bali? A.I. Yes, for a big concert area on the Bukit. This is an old stone mine, an amazing place in the middle of Bukit where a new road has been built, so access is very good. S.B. Talking concerts, with major acts coming in? A.I. Yeah, yeah, that’s what Bali is missing. We can have more than 6000 people there.

STAYING SAFE T
here has been a lot of dialogue lately about the issue of personal safety and protecting your property.
A comment by a Balinese community leader brought the situation into perspective when he commented that there has been a history of violence here for a long time, remember the Puputan, the communist purges in ’65? Violence isn’t new and it isn’t isolated to Bali.
One of the organisers of a Rotary-sponsored talk on the subject pointed out, quite rightly, that often people do things in Bali they would not do in other parts of the world and by doing so they leave themselves open to harm. The issue of riding motorbikes without helmets and protective clothing has come up time and again. A UK comedian expressed it brilliantly when she said she had a ride with a friend during her visit to Bali, wearing only a sarong and thongs, something she wouldn’t imagine doing at home in the UK. Apart from being arrested, any accident will be much worse if you aren’t covered up and protected. If someone were to push you off the motorbike and you’re wearing an evening dress and sandals, you will definitely have some injuries to speak of as a result, yet we see it all the time. The lovely young things with hot pants and bikini tops floating down the street with their hair flowing in the wind and a shoulder bag flying behind them, are easy prey.

IN BALI A patch of gravel, a vehicle coming out of a gang without looking, or a stray dog darting onto the road is far more likely to result in an accident than a random mugging but still we see them every day, all day, riding thoughtlessly through the streets. Heading home down a dark street alone is another thing you wouldn’t want to do in a city, or pretty much anywhere else and yet people still do. Muggings are random events and in a global perspective, no more common here than elsewhere and yet we all need reminding that simply because we are in Bali doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take care not to put ourselves in danger. Simple things can help like not going home alone if you live down a dark gang or in a quiet street, take a buddy with you or get a taxi to drop you at the door, don’t drive drunk and unprotected at night, don’t carry lots of money or expensive things with you if you can avoid it, don’t have your bag hanging over your shoulder where a passing bike can pull it, and you, off the bike, check the entrances to your house and make sure you aren’t giving easy access to burglars. One friend suggested locking sharp knives away as often the burglars will grab one of yours if disturbed. Simple precautions can prevent some of these things happening. The local police also had a few comments regarding this issue and others. Currently they say there is a rise in road robberies, the method is not a new one; throw some nails in the road to create a flat tire. The driver stops, gets out and his belongings are taken from his car. An oldie but obviously still a goodie. Stay in the car, phone for help, or drive slowly to help. The police officer said he also gets called to home invasions to find that the doors of the property were left unlocked, valuables left lying around. Lying there pretending to sleep when you have children in the house or items you care about, is
never an easy thing, so do all you can to make sure they can’t get in. Dogs can be poisoned, security guards can fall asleep and a determined burglar will find a way to get in if they really want to, but don’t make it easy, is the point of it. For some reason this issue seems to have initiated a lot of dialogue, not all of it nice, but as one long term resident and community member said, the banjar is full of members of our community and mostly they all have jobs as well as their community service. By contributing to the banjar, which is something we should all do, funds become available for patrols of our neighborhoods to make it safer for us all. Without funds they can’t finance the patrols. Personal safety is an issue wherever you go but don’t imagine that because you are in Bali you are removed from the social problems that exist elsewhere, that you are free from danger. It exists everywhere, it exists here too and no one is immune. Just by taking simple precautions however, you can minimize the risk to self and property. The self defense expert who spoke to the Rotary group reminded everyone that at the end of the day the bag, the phone, the money can be replaced, it isn’t worth your life to fight for it. Give it up and live to tell the tale. Robbers have two objectives: to get your stuff and not get caught. The message is simple, be aware of the risks, take precautions, stay safe and if you do get into trouble, give it up and then report it to the police, so make sure you know their number and where they are. It might not always be the solution but if they don’t know, they can’t help. Look after yourselves and stay safe, same as you would anywhere else. [Sarah Dee] www.beatmag.com

Interview by Rudolf Dethu
Homegrown & Well Known: AGUNG BAWANTARA and EKA RISTI
Y
ou can learn a thing or two about dedication and integrity from this die-hard duo. Agung and Eka have brought local documentary movies back alive and kicking. Actually, it’s deeper than that: they have brought back hope and confidence to the industry. Previously, you guys weren’t really involved with documentary movies. But lately you seem very concerned about it. How come? Agung: As a matter of fact, I’ve been exploring the audio-visual world since 1996. I was working as a journalist for the now-defunct politic tabloid, Detik. At the time I remember that I went to Bali for a project, there was quite a big drama in Bali, as a videoclip from this American rock band, Saigon Kick, was accused of insulting Bali. I chose not to get dragged into that controversy, rather, I chose to learn how to make a proper movie from Eros Djarot, who was a respectable movie director who was also the chief editor of Detik. I thought that rather than the Balinese going berserk and getting offended, in this case as it was a motion picture, it’d be wiser to counter it by making a motion picture which told a positive story about Bali. Other than Eros, I also learned from movie kingpins like Slamet Rahardjo, Chalid Arifin, Soemardjono, and Gotot Prakosa. Things evolved from there, I got involved with various movie productions, whether for television or cinema. Then I decided to return to Bali in 2007.
94
www.beatmag.com
There I met Eka and we built our company, that focuses on writing, publishing books and making documentary movies; the things that integrate us (with our different skills and backgrounds) all together. That same year I proposed to the committee of the biggest and longest running art festival in Bali, Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB), to include movies as part of their annual program. My idea of including movies in the festival became a big issue in the media, but didn’t come to fruition. Finally in 2010 we were asked by the government of Bali to manage and execute a documentary movie competition (Lomba Film Dokumenter) as a part of PKB. Even though it was so late to be confirmed, and the budget given to us was very small, we felt appreciated. We did the best we could to make sure it ran well. At the time the scope was only local, Bali centric. The following year, with a similarly small budget, we widened the scale. Plus we changed the name to Festival Film Dokumenter Bali. This time the participants weren’t only from Bali but from all over Indonesia. We also had big name judges involved, such as the producer of the Ring of Fire documentary movie, Dr. Lawrence Blair, the famous movie director, Slamet Rahardjo Djarot, and photography master, Rio Helmi. In 2012, supported by Arti Foundation, we developed the festival even further. We grabbed Marlowe Bandem, a young Balinese activist who’s been giving serious support to the local creative
FEATURES movement, and Marcella Zalianty, a movie actress who was previously awarded a Citra (Indonesian version of an Oscar) yet lately she has been busy making her own documentary movies. We had them on the team, hoping to elevate the festival, and magnify the attention it received from the public. The government from the City of Denpasar could sense the potential of the festival, they came in and supported us. This year, the name of the festival has been once again changed to the Denpasar Film Festival. Eka: Along the way we discovered that to start and then develop a documentary movie festival takes special, focused attention and energy. We are not only activating the competition, but also workshops that cater for the type of people who appreciate documentary movies. In 2011 we even visited all the towns in Bali and gave workshops. Agung: We have had to put our plans to produce our own documentary movie on hold till our documentary movie festival is a little more established—which I think won’t be long now. Eka: However, we are still involved in helping other (overseas) directors when making documentary movies locally, for example Tarsier Towers (in North Sulawesi, 2012) and Living Prayer (in Bali, 2012). What’s the story with documentary movies in Bali and in Indonesia in general? As far as I’m concerned, lately documentary movies are pretty “in” here in Indonesia. And I think this isn’t just euphoria, or a temporary trend, but an awareness from the young creative types that making movies isn’t really a too-difficult, wayexpensive thing to do anymore, especially with the sophisticated technology these days. Gadgets to make films are easy to find, easy to use, and in the palm of their hands everyday. Workshops and festivals that we have held were designed with the intention to facilitate relevant exchange of information and ideas about documentary movies. As well as to update participants about the progress of documentary movies in the world today. So you think you’ve gotten enough support from the government? The Mayor of Denpasar especially, is one who’s very supportive. He is genuinely concerned that creativity remains healthy and alive within Denpasar society. That’s why our program gets full support from him.
In other cities, I guess it’s different. But we don’t really know details beyond Denpasar. Generally in Indonesia, and not only for movies, creative industries are not taken care of properly by the government. As a matter of fact, the concept of creative industries, and how they should be supported, was well planned, and ready to go from 2006. It has been applied only sporadically and of course has been overshadowed with corruption. Only a few events have represented a true movement with real, participative spirit. How is it going so far for this year’s Denpasar Film Festival, still as tough as before or already a little easier? Agung: The festival is planned for August this year. Before that, we’ll hold a series of workshops involving instructors from Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Jakarta Art Institute (IKJ), and the European Broadcast Union. Eka: The composition of curators and the panel of judges is going to be a bit different this year. Still same faces in the judging panels plus new judges like Prof. I Made Bandem, Dr. Lawrence Blair, Wayan Juniartha, and fresh faces will also appear in the curators panel like Erick EST and a few more. This year is a bit easier—well, kind of, as we seem to already have some momentum—but still very challenging. Name three documentary movies that you think can inspire local film makers and why. We think Myth, Magic and Monster by Dr. Lawrence Blair is worth watching. Not only enlightening in the way it compares cultures in a unique way, but it also shows Indonesia’s beauty (which we may have never really bothered to look at, or worry about, previously). Also The Farmer’s Wife by David Sutherland which is like a guide in how to make a documentary movie with a live reality approach. And Negeri di Bawah Kabut by Salahuddin Siregar due to its terrific contents and cinematography. Any last nagging words? Agung: Use your own initiative and move whatever needs to be moved, change whatever needs to be changed, to get things right. That’s the start of setting your the environment and the universe straight. Eka: Nobody can help you but yourself. Make as many friends as you can and take notice of the insights their friendships create in your own life. www.beatmag.com

Paradiso’s menu selection is basic and affordable with just the food you would want to eat at a bowling alley. Try their Beef Nachos (30k), tortilla chips topped with beans, ground beef, pico de gallo, guacamole, enchilada sauce mozzarella cheese, and enchilada sauce. Each chip had more than enough toppings which made this particular dish very tasty and if you order it for multiple people, expect it to be finished rather quickly.

A Silver Lining, Zombies, Hitman and a haunted house by: pande
Love, fear and a sense of belonging are some of the most often seen emotions in our life. Here are some tales featuring those which adapt stories from the past with what is happening in today’s society, some are doing it by amalgamating two big themes from previous movies. See for yourself at www.21cineplex. com or DVD!
Silver Linings Playbook Comedy, Drama, Romance. Director: David O. Russell. Writer: David O. Russell (Screenplay) and Matthew Quick (Novel). Cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher. This film is adapted from the novel of the same name. Pat Jr. (Bradley Cooper, The Hangover franchise) has just been released from a mental health institution after his bipolar disorder can now be treated at home. One day, during a dinner at a friend’s house, Pat meets his friend’s sister-in-law, Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games), which also has the mental problem – neuroses. Elements of comedy and romance between the protagonists throughout the film made it a strong contender during the awards season, including a win for Jennifer Lawrence. Critics have warmly received this touching story of love between two flawed characters. Expect some laughs and a lot of sentimentality.
Killing Them Softly Neo-noir, Crime, Thriller. Director: Andrew Dominik. Writer: Andrew Dominik (Screenplay), George V. Higgins (Novel). Cast: Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, Vincent Curatola, Slaine. The main character here, Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt, Inglourious Basterds), a hitman, is hired by Driver (Richard Jenkins, The Visitor) – a mafia emissary, to murder Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta), Squirrel (Vincent Curatola), Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn) due to their heist of a mob poker game. This film was based on Cogan’s Trade, a novel by George V. Higgins. This movie features a dynamic Pitt who is able to play both hero or villain. Expect multiple intertwining subplots, the usual criminal characters, and extremely well written dialog.
warm bodies Zombie Comedy, Horror, Romance. Director: Jonathan Levine. Writer: Jonathan Levine (Screenplay), Isaac Marion (Novel). Cast: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry, Dave Franco, Analeigh Tipton, Cory Hardrict, John Malkovich. A very bizarre zombie named R (Nicholas Hoult, About a Boy) lives in a city teeming with zombies. When R and the zombie packs are about to scavenge for food (human flesh), especially human brains, they accidentally meet Julie Grigio (Teresa Palmer) and a few more humans who are also looking for food. R falls for Julie at first sight. This story depicts the other side of the zombie realm, where not all zombies are cruel, some are good-hearted. Expect R and his friends to interact with the humans. This movie vividly tells a love story between the undead and a girl. Expect some hilarious necrophilia and all the hallmarks of a zombie movie. This just could be the first romantic zombie movie to ever make its way to the big screen, so also expect for this flick to defy convention.
SINISTER Horror, Mystery, Thriller. Director: Scott Derrickson. Writer: C. Robert Cargill, Scott Derrickson. Cast: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, James Ransone, Clare Foley, Michael Hall D’Addario. This found footage horror film follows the story of Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), a true crime writer, who finds a box of snuff movies that puts his entire family in danger from supernatural beings. The story is about a family moving into a house that was the scene of grisly murders. Sounds familiar? Are kids involved? Yes. Demonic figures? Check. Paranormal events? Check. The difference between this film and the numerous other found footage horror flicks out there where a family moves into a new haunted house is that Sinister had generally positive reviews. So if you want to traumatize your kids for all eternity, bring them to this film and tell them bad things are going to happen to them if they don’t do what you tell them to.

HERENOW SURF
Komune Resort Beach & Club
Bruce Irons
thursday 28 mar
Roots
Bruce Irons is a pro surfer who was born in Kauai, Hawaii on November 16, 1979. He is the younger sibling of the late Andy Irons, the three-time world champion. It’s fair to say surfing ran in the Irons family. At seven, Bruce was already on his surfboard, paddling into the waves on the North Shore with Andy, trying to outdo other kids on the beach.
Sounds
Explosive surfing.
Where you might have heard him
Bruce Irons had some amateur successes back home and quickly went pro shortly after finishing high school. Being in a constant atmosphere of competition with his brother since he was a grommet, Bruce pushes the limits of what humans can do on a wave. Some of his major achievements (being a cover boy aside) include beating 11-time world champion Kelly Slater to take home the first prize at 2001 Pipe Masters. Then, three years later, he qualified for his first ASP championship, but was beaten by his older brother in the final. That same year, two months after his first ASP final, he again took the podium, this time at the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau event, where he stunned spectators by his performance by taming 12-meter waves. Bruce has consistantly ranked in the top 10 by the Surfer Poll Awards 2005 (#3), 2008 (#7), 2009 (#10) and 2011 (#10). He also won (for the first time) the Rip Curl Pro Search in 2008 held in Uluwatu, Bali.
Why see him
Bruce’s surfing skill can be summed up in one word, innovative. It was only natural for him to beat some of the best international surfers and dazzle the crowd with his skill honed back in Hawaii. Now, that he is back in Bali after having a son, catch this surfing legend in a night surfing expression session at Komune Resort Beach & Club on March 28.

Jumbo Caller ID
This is the amplifier that boosts a cell phone’s reception 20X while driving. It improves bidirectional signal strength in weak-signal areas, minimizing dropped calls and maximizing data speeds. The amplifier plugs into a car’s DC power source and connects to an external antenna that magnetically attaches to your car’s exterior. Placing a cell phone in the booster’s cradle increases the gain up to 26 dB, but requires no physical connection because it relays calls wirelessly, allowing use of a Bluetooth headset, wired headset, or speakerphone. www.hammacher.com $159.95

Entangled Indonesian Insects Now – March 31 Gaya Ceramic Arts Center presents an American ceramic artist, Alexander M. Clinthorne, in its Resident Artist program. Titled “Entangled Indonesian Insects”, Clinthorne’s artwork examines the workings of cause and effects in ecological and social circumstances that occur in our surroundings. Although there are certainly a few weird and scary details to behold, such as decaying false teeth worked into the side of a sculpture, most of these breathtaking pieces speak on intuitive and fantastic creativity, fluid dexterity and daring manipulation of the medium, and an intense observation of the natural worlds in various transformation stages. Through sculpture and sound, Clinthorne explores themes of transition, competition, abandonment, and disposability. Feel free to get down to the exhibition which will be held until the end of March.

Pada Sentuhan Tangan March 30 – April 9 Graphic art has been known as an exploration of print which has two entities that also blends together two different elements, art and technology. Imminently, Bentara Budaya Bali will host a graphic art exhibition which will present four graphic artists who are recognizable for their art works. Although it’s under the theme of graphic art, the exhibition called “Pada Sentuhan Tangan” (On the Touch of a Hand) instead showcases pieces that possess a sense of fine art, not an applicable graphic art that we find in most graphic design. This exhibition might be seen as an effort to evoke and encourage the interest in graphic artists in the future. The artists who are collaborating in this exhibition are Chairin Hayati, Haryadi Suadi, Ipong Purnama Sidhi, and T. Sutanto.

SPA
Arc Anti-Aging Clinic
Anti aging is the catch phrase of spa technology these day and in Bali, ARC was one of the first and remains the biggest supplier of botox, fillers and hormones on the island.
Look
Housed in a luxurious new facility on Sunset Road, ARC has a team of doctors, nurses and therapists on hand to guide clients through both big and small procedures. All customer care is of a very high standard and the softly lit, deeply carpeted facility has a host of private room and specialty areas.
Feel
The latest technology in laser treatments recently arrived at ARC. Harmony is a major investment for ARC, offering 13 distinct laser, light and ultrasound technologies and 28 different hand-piece modules, HarmonyXL is the most comprehensive aesthetic platform for dermatologists and aesthetic practitioners available today. Treatments at ARC often begin with a check by the doctor who will advise whether the treatment is appropriate, how many sessions will be required and the results you can expect. I opted to try the laser treatment for spider veins and the doctor advised that some of the darker ones would require up to five treatments, I was impressed that the smaller ones almost disappeared. Be warned though, it does sting. Two nurses gave the treatment and applied ice packs and anaesthetic cream and were mindful of my comfort.
travel home with as the cost here is lower than elsewhere. Botox and fillers are also available. Naturally less intensive treatments are also available at ARC, from oxygen infused facials to microdermabrasion facials and treatments for a range of skin conditions.
Magic
The clinic is still expanding, investing and growing as part of the interest in the latest anti-aging procedures continues. A new dental facility is being planned and a gynaecology unit will also be added in the future. ARC takes skin care and anti-aging seriously and consultations are available. It’s comfortable, scrupulously clean and well equipped, which has thus far proved a winning formula for the antiaging specialists.
Ingredients
Human Growth hormone and testosterone treatments are very popular at ARC and the list of benefits makes you want to sing up on the spot. The clincher is that it is an ongoing treatment. Owner, Sita James, explains that she has a lot of patients from overseas that come and get a prescription to

ACCOMODATION
Location Eazy Suite is Located on Jalan Dewi Sri, Legian. This is a prime location for those of you who don’t want to be surrounded by traffic jams but at the same time want to be in the middle of every hotspot in Legian, Seminyak and Kuta. One great new addition to Jalan Dewi Sri is the new club Pyramid, which is about 500 meters away from the hotel. It’s an isolated and cozy spot yet it is perfect for going wherever you like.
Look Don’t judge a book by its cover. The outside may look like it’s a tiny place but once you walk in you will be amazed at how spacious and ‘homey’ the rooms are. The rooms are 36 square meters each. It is more like renting out an apartment that will perfectly suit you and have everything that you will need as soon as you ask for it. The whole look of it is a minimalist modern look, which is nice because it gives it a spacious and beautiful ambience.
Atmosphere This hotel has a very chilled and relaxing feeling to it, at night the lights compensate to make the whole place seem like you're actually on a tropical

island, which many hotels in Bali don’t have. Eazy Suite has a clean atmosphere in comparison to the Bali chaos that goes on outside of its walls. Many people are going to love the spaciousness you get and how modern all the furniture is.
Features The facilities at Eazy Suite are pretty much what you would get at any top hotel; motorbike rental, car rental, room service, laundry service, free wi-fi and a free public computer. There are five binders of movies that you may take as you please. The newly built hotel has an apartment concept and each room is actually a suite and really gives you value for money.
Prices The rate for their uniform rooms are listed at 450k per night. Contact them for special offers.

In the spring of 2009, all seemed to be going swimmingly for London quartet Bloc Party. The darlings of the post punk youth and hailed by music critics as the best thing since skinny jeans, everything appeared hunky dory on the outside for Kele Okereke & co. However, all was not well amidst the ranks: With a heavy schedule of touring, talk of an internal feud and the tell-tale rumours of band members planning to ‘concentrate on solo projects’, it looked at one point like lead singer Okereke might abandon the band altogether, with the remaining three admitting to holding auditions for his replacement. Happily, the East London lads managed to kiss, make up, and reassemble for the fourth studio album, cleverly called Four (see what they’ve done there?). The sabbatical seems to have somewhat done them good, returning with an, at times, more promising, melodic sounding record. After the patchy sonic assault of 2008’s Intimacy which seemed all too often to forego melody for sheer noise, Four feels, occasionally, like the Bloc Party of old settling back into their trademark sound – a sound that was so expertly laid out on Silent Alarm and A Weekend in the City. The problem is, this only happens about 50% of the time on Four. A lot of it works, but unfortunately a lot of it falls flat. The opening, distinctly un-Bloc Partyish blues swagger of “Coliseum” sticks out like a sore thumb, I’m pretty sure there’s a banjo in there somewhere on “Real Talk”, and the hardcore punk racket of “We Are Not Good People” just feels bullish and unrestrained – two qualities notable by their absence from their best work. The standout tracks are, unsurprisingly, vintage Bloc Party. Ethereal “Truth” has already become a live favourite and “The Healing” is a dreamy slice of tumbling guitar magic, but it’s the absolutely stunning “V.A.L.I.S.” that steals the show – effortlessly up there with “Banquet” on the ‘Best of Bloc Party’ shortlist. In between, tracks like “Octopus” and “Team A” start promisingly enough – chopped up guitars as angular as an architect’s pencil case with Okereke’s trademark falsetto soaring over the top – but there’s the nagging temptation to stamp ‘could do better’ across them, like a school teacher with a big red pen marking some half-arsed homework. It’s a competent comeback, but Bloc Party still have some way to go to recapture the genius of their earlier vigour. Dan Ashcroft
