As the hotel moratorium fades into the haze of lost possibilities and the roads become more and more choked with cars and above all motorbikes, everybody has their expectations focused on the projects that are fast coming to fruition in the island’s traffic hotspots. While getting to the airport from Nusa Dua and Sanur will be sorted out rather well, the same can’t be said for trying to get back to Seminyak from the airport. Once those thousands of vehicles are freed up and pass through Simpang Siur from all directions heading north, the biggest MACET (traffic jam) in human history is about to unfold on the Imon Bonjol/Sunset Road intersection. Oh my goodness, it is so bad at times, you are lucky to get through unscathed already, but the load of fast moving vehicles from the east and south trying to savour the urban, international flavours of Bali’s hippest suburb, is going to create hell on those traffic lights. Now go further up the Sunset Road, hit Jalan Kerobokan, and then on further to the intersection at Jalan Batubelig, and just imagine how that’s going to look in a few months. The macet we encounter now down at Simpang Siur will be heading north to an intersection near you very soon. Theoretically, the year 2013 season starts this weekend with Easter school holidays beginning and with them many visitors coming to the island. The press has already taken out there knives saying that less tourists are coming to Bali as January figures showed a downturn. They seem to have forgotten that the Chinese New Year was in February this year, instead of January last year, which simply equates to not as many Chinese being here this January as last. Not surprising January figures were down. I can’t believe how many motorbikes there are nowadays on the roads. Every time one takes off from the traffic lights it’s like the start of a motor cross race with bikes going everywhere all over the road. A total mess. Forget the hotels, it’s time for a motorcycle moratorium on this island. There are loads of shows coming our way this weekend on. Check inside for all the details and Happy Easter everyone.

new baby elephant for Elephant Safari Park & Lodge The Elephant Safari Park & Lodge, Taro, Bali, welcomed a new baby elephant to its herd of 31 pachyderms. 28-year-old Yanti had an easy and trouble free birth with no help needed from the staff and vet on standby. Born at 5.50am as dawn was breaking, an excited and enthusiastic number of guests staying at the Elephant Safari Park Lodge were lucky enough to witness this spectacular birth close up. The baby girl was named Fajar, which is the Indonesian translation of Dawn. Managing Director Nigel Mason said that it proved once again that the fuss that we see exhibited by Western Zoos is not necessary and that elephants giving birth should be left to the way of what comes naturally in nature. The baby and mother can be viewed from now at the Elephant Safari Park & Lodge.

Local Conservation NGO Teams up with Sanur Students Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF) teamed up with twenty students from Sanur Independent School (SIS) to help improve the habitat of local birdlife near the village of Utu in central Bali. They planted together about 100 trees, such as pines, palms, and magnolias, near the Besikalung Temple. By planting those kinds of trees, it will provide the birds with vital food around this area, shelter and a nestling area, and encouraging them to stay nearby. Besides, the international students who came from Australia, France, USA, and Japan were also able to raise funds to support the FNPF’s works by doing some kinds of volunteering stuff, such as bake selling and screening of a movie at a local yoga studio. Let’s help save the local bird’s habitat with the green movement. To make a donation, just log on to www.fnpf.org www.beatmag.com

Roots

Nidji is an Indonesian band, founded in 2002. The name Nidji itself comes from the Japanese word ‘niji’ which means rainbow, they chose this name as they aim to integrate their music skills and colors creating a beautiful and melodic sounds. At first, the band consisted of five people, Giring (vocalist), Rama (rhythmic guitarist), Ariel (lead guitarist), Andro (bassist) and Adri (drummer). In 2005, Randy/Run-D filled the keyboardist position.

Sounds

Where you might have heard them

So far, Nidji has released six studio albums, including one international double album. All of them peaked on MTV Ampuh and other national pop charts during the first few weeks after release. Their debut and most successful album titled Breakthru’, released in 2006 and was later re-released in English in 2007. The Indonesian version of the album contains 10 singles, three of which, namely “Sudah”, “Hapus Aku” and “Kau dan Aku” peaked on MTV Ampuh for a few weeks. In 2007, they also launched their second album called Top Up, which just literally topped up their success and already large fan base. The single “Shadow” from this album together with “Heaven” from Breakthru’ made it to be the background music for season three of the popular TV series Heroes promo in Southeast Asia. Due to this, “Shadow” stayed as #1 on MTV Ampuh for 13 weeks. The six-piece band also left their mark on the Laskar Pelangi original soundtrack with their song “Laskar Pelangi” (The Rainbow Troops). Nidji’s single, “Liberty” has also reached the Manchester United’s playing ground – Old Trafford, having been played recently before the Red Devils’ game started.

DJ Patricia

thursday 04 apr

Roots

DJ Patricia is yet another female DJ who worked her way up the ladder in the dance music scene through the hustle and bustle of Jakarta, Indonesia. Born with a mix of German and Chinese blood, one might mistake her for being a foreigner at home. She started her R&B gig while studying in Australia back in 2001 and a year later she went back to Jakarta and found herself to be one of the first female DJs in Indonesia, having been invited to perform her DJing skills at a hip hop party. In that same year, DJ Patricia met DJ Riri, who was just about to establish his own music label and soon enough DJ Patricia became part of the label – Spinach Records.

Sounds

Hip hop, electro, R&B, house.

Where you might have heard her

During that period, it was quite rare to find a female DJ, let alone those with R&B and hip hop skills. To Patricia’s amazement, she performed at various first-class clubs all around the archipelago, such as Embassy, Centro, Club Monaco, just to name a few and also at several big music events, like Godskitchen, Ultimate Midnight, and Lost Chapter. Her desire to explore other genres like house was realized after four years of being the queen of the hip hop scene. Punters and critics all gave great reviews for her performances and soon after, many collaboration acts were made such as with Dewi Sandra, 3 female violinist, Duo percussion, Rejoz (The Groove) among others. She also has a great voice. She sang together with G.O.A (Andre Chillink and Derry Bunglon) in a single called “Wandering Song”, released on Jakarta Movement 2005. A few years down the road, DJ Patricia teamed up with DJ Riri to create “Grooving Me” and was released on DJ Riri’s Last Call. She also joined her DJing force with a widely-acclaimed drummer – Tyo Nugros in 2009.

Why see her

DJ Patricia is one-of-a-kind female DJ. If you want to have a rare experience of listening to some house and hip hop sounds by a female DJ, she is definitely the one you are looking for. Feed your soul with the sounds from her deck, when she plays at Boshe on April 4.

Aeroplane

friday 05 apr

Roots

Aeroplane is a solo DJ consisting of Vito de Luca in the pilot seat. Vito de Luca was born in Belgium to Italian parents. De Luca used to own a record store when he was 19 years old, which in a way helped to develop his eclectic taste of music and incorporate it in his tracks under the guidance of his mother’s brother, who is a DJ too. The Italian-Belgian producer and DJ created Aeroplane together with his Italian buddy, Stephen Fasano in 2007, after meeting him for the first time in 2001. However, the latter chose to focus on his own project and amicably left de Luca to be the sole man in the cockpit in 2010.

Sounds

Techno, nu-disco, house, Balearic beat.

Where you might have heard him

Aeroplane’s first album was We Can’t Fly (co-produced by a French producer – Bertrand Burgalat), alluded to French dance music and was released in September 2010 under the UK Wall of Sound label. Soon after, the tracks leaked online and amassed a lot of positive reviews by fans and disco music critics alike. Some of the most famous singles in it are “Mountains of Moscow”, “London Bridge” and “The Point of No Return”. Aeroplane has also done several remixes, most notably for Grace Jones’ “Williams’ Blood” and Sebastien Tellier’s “Kilometer”. He also did a very notable remix of the Friendly Fires’ “Paris” featuring Au Revoir Simone. If you’ve been to the W at all, you may notice it playing as it’s in constant rotation in their Symmetry album all across their hotels worldwide.

Why see him

Aeroplane is not just a DJ that has a mixed background, his slow disco-house sounds coming from the decks allow people on the floor to breathe and be ready for more of it. That is just how he soars. Expect some in-flight tech-house music with sprinkles of disco atmosphere when Aeroplane embarks on a nightto-dawn journey at Hu’u Bar on April 5.

Two years after Fade Records was founded, Chris stretched his limits to establish another label called Balance Record Pool. He has done a number of singles, remixes and compilations, either by himself or through collaboration with renowned names like Joel Mull, Ed Davenport and Mark Broom. His well-known remix of Delerium’s “Silence” even reached one million copies sold online. Chris’ love for New York City’s underground house music scene has also produced albums and EPs, such as Balance 007 (2005) and As Long as the Moment Exists (2007). Standing strong and steady at the top of his 20-year-long career, Chris has garnered more residencies overseas, most notably at The Cross in London and at Twilo in New York. His Balance Record Pool was awarded at the 2005 and 2006 International Dance Music Awards, while his Fade Records has helped DJ Steve Porter make a name for himself early in his career.

Why see him

Chances are you’ve definitely heard Fortier’s remix of Delerium’s “Silence” featuring vocals by Sarah McLachlan, Head down to Mint on April 6 to see him for yourself.

Justin Martin

friday 12 apr

Roots

Justin Martin is an American DJ and dance music producer. He was born in Vermont on May 1, 1975, and is now living in San Francisco, California. Justin was a college ice hockey player prior to becoming a DJ, he even got called up for NHL entry draft by the Los Angeles Kings in 1993. Ten years down the road, Justin awakened his passion for dance music which he always kept since he was banging pots and pans at the age of two. Justin Martin’s transition from being an ice hockey player into a pro DJ is probably one of the more remarkable DJ stories we’ve heard.

Sounds

House, electro, techno, tech-house.

Where you might have heard him

In 2003, Justin made his breakthrough with his first record, The Sad Piano, which was released under Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly label. Several high-ranked DJs such as Derrick Carter and Pete Tong played the track over and over again and it soon found itself in the spotlight. It was also included into Steve Bug’s Bugnology compilation by Poker Flat. Justin left a remarkable impression on Dirtybird Records’ first four releases and followed with a chain of solo EPs. Together with his brother, Christian Martin, they formed The Martin Brothers, under which hits like “Stoopit” and “Dum” were released. He also impressed the world with his remixes of Radiohead’s “Nude”, Marshall Jefferson’s “Mushrooms”, and TG’s “Revox”. He has performed at Exit Festival (Belgrade), Sonar (Barcelona), Panorama Bar (Berlin), and several others. Some of his most notable works include Chaos Restored mix series and a DJ mix for Ministry of Sound’s Underground series compilation.

Why see him

Being one of the hippest dance music DJs around San Francisco, Justin is still retaining his own underground music scene credentials. Catch him live at the W on April 12.

Osunlade

Friday 12 apr

Roots

Osunlade is a house DJ and music producer. This shaman-looking DJ with Christian Warren as his real name was born on March 13, 1969 in St Louis, Missouri, USA, which is home to Miles Davis and Chuck Berry. He first got in touch with his first instrument, piano, at the age of seven, and soon drums, bass and guitar followed. He was the president of his school band and playing trumpet, The major milestone of his life was at 17, when he left his native St Louis and embarked on a journey to Los Angeles. There Osunlade successfully impressed Tony ‘Mickey’ Basil and was offered a music score composer role for a b-movie titled “Rockula” and also for Sesame Street.

Sounds

House, deep house.

Where you might have heard him

After international success at such a young age, Osunlade’s music career has never been the same. He started to work for major labels, producing scores for other artists; some of them are Gerardo “Rico Suave” (1991), Freddie Jackson “Was It Something” (1994) and Nadirah Shakoor “Love Song” (2006), but only to find himself feeling like losing his passion for music, because the artists are still the ones that claimed most credits. That spurred him to found his own label called Yoruba Records in 1999 with a great focus in its integrity and spiritual connection, so as to not to let material benefits take precedence over spiritual ones. Osunlade himself is an ordained priest of Ifá, a Yoruban way of life. His debut album dropped in 2001 titled Paradigm caused quite a stir amongst the house scene followers, making people refer to him as the master of ancestral house music. He has been in and out of USA, has moved to London, Greece and Puerto Rico among others for quite a number of years while playing in various clubs in town all over. Yoruba Records also runs a radio show, which regularly features Yoruba Soul Radio signature series, which is available for free on its website.

Why see him

If you have been longing for some soulful house sounds, this veteran DJ is just bringing to you what you need. With a good balance of spirituality and music, why resist the tempting opportunity of seeing him live at Hu’u Bar on April 12. Hear his sound and feel his spirit. www.beatmag.com

FEATURES S.B. Let the dance begin. S. My real name is Nuryanji, but since I was little I was called Shinta, I’m 29 years old, born in Jakarta but from Jogja, Indonesia. S.B. Background? S. I attended high school in Jakarta and went back to Jogja for university where I fell in love with dancing in a serious way. S.B. Would you elaborate on that statement, also did you study dancing at the university? S. No, since I was a little girl around six years old I just loved to dance, during university I started dancing in clubs, go-go and sexy dancing, then I met my boyfriend, Jerome Muriel four years ago and he was dancing and performing at Ocean Beach Club in Kuta. He had a dance company called The Company, it was sort of a mix, cabaret, fire dancing, acrobatics and ballet. I wanted to be a professional dancer and Jerome was willing to teach me, but with strict instruction on learning in order to become a professional. I studied hard and learned jazz, classical ballet and with time I became pretty good and one day Jerome said let’s start a company together, that was two years ago. S.B. Now the two of you have your own working dance troupe? S. Yes, it’s called Extreme Productions. S.B. Do you do the choreography? S. I work with Jerome, but I do quite a lot by myself. Jerome’s background started in the circus where he was a fire dancer and then creating shows and directing, so we include that in our productions. S.B. Did you have the idea of doing big productions at the start? S. No, it started with four boys and four girls, then it grew into 20, which we have now. This incorporates the fire dancing and acrobatics combined with modern dance, jazz, Broadway, burlesque, cabaret and some Brazilian. S.B. Where have you been working up to date? S. I’ve worked in Jakarta recently at a few hotels and malls, Caesar’s Palace Hotel in Flores, Timur Leste and Bandung. Obviously in and around Bali too, Ku De Ta, Warisan, Bali Marine Park, and Kuta’s Sky Garden. S.B. You have had television appearances in Bali, what’s that all about? S. That was at Trans 7 “jam malam” last year, Indostar and the Bali Agung Show, and Trans Corp Dekade.

S.B. Last time I saw your production it was at a wedding, so I presume your group will work anywhere and everything? S. Yes, we do any kind of event. I would love to do just dance by myself, working on that, solo or with groups, that’s in the works as well, plus I would love to travel around the world doing performances, the sky’s the limit. S.B. What is the age limit of your group? S. From 16 to 27. No special qualities are required; we train them if they have the desire. Actually most of the group has been with me for the past three or four years now. We study very hard, everyday from two to six in the evening, stretching for one hour and then doing dance routines. S.B. What do you have to say to your fans out there? S. If your thinking about becoming a professional dancer, you have to put everything you have into it. S.B. That sounds like a philosophy as well? S. That’s it, push your limits. S.B. Thanks Shinta, keep those feet moving on the floor. Chow mein, Salvador Bali Contact-www.extreamproduction.com extreamproduction@yahoo.com www.beatmag.com

came across a man the other day who is in the IT business. I politely enquired how business was going and his answer surprised me.

even he did not envisage how simple we would make it for Big Brother, or any moron at all, to see what we’ve been up to.

He says he is picking up a lot of work now doing reputation protection. What exactly is that?

Facebook has a lot to answer for, but anyone who types their name into a search engine is likely to come up with unexpected information relating to them, and it goes back as archivists randomly collect information from sources far and wide.

Think about it. How many times have you or your friends posted party photos or had a rant about something or played out a romance on line? Well it seems that, as predicted, those things are coming back to haunt us. Every line written and every photo posted on line is out there in cyber space, looming largely on profiles you have never considered. Your next business partner, or fiancée or someone you have upset, may well decide to have a dig around. So the latest activity of IT people is cleaning up your profile online, getting rid of embarrassing moments and incriminating evidence, things which seemed funny at the time that may come back to bite you on the backside. We are all only too aware that people can see what you’re up to. When George Orwell pictured the future in the novel 1984, already ancient history,

Perhaps before you need reputation protection, you should sift through the personal and business information that is out there. If nothing else it can be a jolly trip down memory lane but being paranoid in this instance is absolutely justified. Personal issues got a lot less personal lately. [Sarah Dee]

Sitting at the beating heart of this massive resort, tucked neatly just below the lobby on the promenade level, is the uber chic eatery known simply as ‘The Cafe’. Open daily from 7am ‘til 11pm, The Cafe is a super sleek haven of cutting edge design – large textured works of art and impressive features mean that it is so much more than just a trendy place to eat. Cool greens and vast swathes of beige stone, coupled with large glass panels from floor to ceiling give the feeling of immense space, which is lucky because it needs to be big to fit in one of the biggest brunch buffet selections in Bali. Featuring a selection of cuisine as wide and varied as the world itself, The Cafe is quickly gaining notoriety as a brunch venue par excellance, with numerous live cooking stations dotted around its spacious interior each one representing a particular type of cuisine. You’ll find rich and flavoursome curries from India, fluffy pork dumplings and sweet’n’sour delights from China, zesty salads and crispy noodles from Thailand, not

Oh, and next door there are more dessert options than you can shake a stick at, the centerpiece of which is a huge chocolate fountain, perched above a revolving ice cream container. All good news for hungry brunchers, but making matters even sweeter is the fact that there is a native chef behind each type of cuisine, meaning that everything you pile onto your plate has been created with the utmost authenticity and integrity. The overriding mantra here is ‘fresh from the oven’, so you expect piping hot, freshly prepared morsels cooked right in front of your eyes. Banning finds himself trapped in the White House as it comes under siege from all sides. CD REVIEW

Foals

Holy Fire Foals have come a long way since their debut effort “Antidotes” became an underground sensation, and with new album Holy Fire it seems the Oxford five-piece are determined to court a more mainstream audience.

Worthless

Wonderful

Worm Fodder

Wow Worthy

Like this? Try these:

Alt-J “An Awesome Wave” Self-professed ‘folk step’ from Mercury winning hipsters.

Bloc Party “A Weekend in the City” Indie pop interspersed with flashes of pandemonium. Like setting off a cluster bomb at a disco.

Friendly Fires “Friendly Fires”

Kicking off in a style not unlike the atmospheric tribal intro to The Stone Roses’ Second Coming (although thankfully not as long), “Prelude” does exactly what it says on the tin, leading in perfectly to the showpiece of Holy Fire, namely “Inhaler”. Starting off as a groovy, marimba infused slice of disco-ish pop, it’s pretty standard Foals territory, but at 1 minute and 49 seconds the whole thing goes mental, exploding into a chorus that sounds more Tom Morello or Dave Navarro than five pasty lads from the home counties with short guitar straps. It’s a clever trick that Foals have used before (“Two Steps Twice”, “Spanish Sahara”), and in this case it’s used to devastating effect – the classic slow lead in marching inevitably towards the punch in the guts – you just never expect it to be quite so thunderous. For lead singer Yannis Phillippakis, it’s a far cry from the mumbled, understated style of most Foals numbers; “I just can’t get enough… SPAAAAAAAAAACCCEEEEE” he screams at full tilt, succeeding in exercising his vocal chords and exorcising a few internal demons while he’s at it. The next highpoint is “My Number”, which is the closest we get to the Foals of Antidotes – the fidgety noodling of Jimmy Smith’s guitar driving the song from one catchy hook to the next. The most radio-friendly track on Holy Fire it’s the obvious single and has already charted well - festival headlining invites no doubt in the post as we speak. Three songs in and so far so amazing, but as with 2010’s Total Life Forever there’s a definite drop off as the album moves on from there. That’s not to say it has nothing else to offer; “Late Night” is another groovy synth-soaked gem, and “Stepson” is a gorgeously tender ballad set to rumbling drums and dotted with twinkly guitar tremolos. However, truth be told, nothing else on Holy Fire quite matches up to the genuinely astonishing “Inhaler” and its prelude, but encouragingly, there is plenty in there to suggest that Foals really are on the cusp of greatness. Bed Glasses Flat on your b a c k ? Pi n c h e d nerves in your neck? These glasses l e t you watch TV or read a book without raising your head! Whatever the problem that restricts your head and neck mobility -- neck pain, osteoporosis, arthritis, pinched nerves, stroke, spine injury -- with Bed Glasses, you can read your book without holding it in midair or view TV or iPad without raising that aching neck. Wear them like regular eyeglasses -- they even fit over prescription glasses. They work on principles of reflection and refraction, a change in the angle of light without a change of medium. The prism is adjustable and reversible, meaning when standing upright, with a flip of the glasses you can view what’s above your head (helpful for painting ceilings!) or at your feet. Bed Glasses are also helpful for those who get claustrophobic in MRIs or other medical scanners because they can change your view from the all-too-close dome of the machine to the space past your feet and into the outer room. (They come with an additional non-ferrous screw and bar just for MRI use!) www.firststreetonline.com $89.95

3Doodler: The World’s First 3D Printing Pen 3D printers have already been gaining mass popularity over the past few years, and now here we have a 3D printing pen, the 3Doodler. Allowing users to draw anything they like without the aid of a computer or software, the pen uses the concept as 3D printing, heating and cooling plastic as it passes through the body of the pen, allowing the user to create limitless design possibilities. www.kickstarter.com

The World’s Smallest Automatic Umbrella C a r r i e d inconspicuously in a purse or trouser pocket, this is the smallest umbrella available that opens and closes with the push of a button. Only 8” long when closed, the umbrella instantly deploys its generous 40” diameter canopy when a button on its handle is pressed. When the skies clear, a second press of the button collapses the canopy. Made by a third-generation umbrella maker based in rainy Portland, Oregon, the umbrella is constructed with a 00-denier polyester canopy and steel shaft, ribs, and stretchers that withstand breezes better than flimsily built compacts made with plastic. And unlike other so-called compacts, it’s small enough to keep on your person at all times, so you’ll never get caught unprepared by a sudden downpour. www.hammacher.com $29.95

CRKT Knife Sharpener Key Ring

We have to admit that this one stumped us at first. Who uses a knife so frequently that they need to have a knife sharpener with them at all times? Edward Scissorhands? Scary thought, you know what we’re saying? But then, we put our thinking caps on and supposed that maybe this wasn’t so out there. For example, if you are a knife-thrower in the circus, you want those knives to be super sharp so that they stick into any wooden surface. And if you are a sword swallower, you definitely would want your swords to be really sharp, right? (Maybe not.) Plus, there are the old standbys for knife-wielders: chefs, park rangers, and Alaskan deep sea fishermen. You can never be too prepared, really. www.thinkgeek.com $16.99 www.beatmag.com

ART

Doddy Obenk D

oddy Obenk is an Indonesian photographer who creates art through dance photography. For him, it is a media where he can interpret a moment honestly. Born in Bandung, on March 25, 1968, Obenk started to play with a camera when he was in Junior High School. His interest in dance photography took shape when he became a dance club member in a Senior High School’s extracurricular course. Seeing the body movement in the dances intrigued him. He found that he could see deeper into the movements through photography. Obenk claims that he has always had a special feeling when capturing the frozen moments from a dancer. Through his works, he tries to share that feeling through the beauty contained in each movement. During the 2000’s, he has been active in exhibiting his photo works. He has exhibited his works in Bali, Jakarta, and Tokyo. Find his photography collections on his website www.obenkgraphie.com and feel the movement of dance.

We rely heavily on I.T. now but our need to communicate has always been hard-wired

D

espite steady rain, a huge crowd packed St Peter’s Square in the Vatican to bursting point in mid-March to await the fumata bianca, the white smoke from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel that would signal a new pope had been chosen. That crowd was not alone: Despite living in an age of 24/7 TV news and globalised broadband internet, the only way initially that news an appointment had been made was via those smoke signals, so a host of TV cameras with long lenses were trained on that iconic chimney for days as the rest of the world watched and waited. The Vatican deliberately chose this archaic method of communication in order to emphasize a ritual that spans many centuries. However, it is worth considering that at one time in the distant past – before electricity had been harnessed – smoke signals seen by a mass of people gathered below would have been the fastest and most efficient way of getting a message out to the greatest number of people. In 1588, when 151 ships of the Spanish Armada arrived off the coast with the intention of invading England and overthrowing Queen Elizabeth I, it was reported that hilltop beacons (bonfires) were lit throughout the country to warn of the attack, the news spreading quickly across the country from hilltop to hilltop. After the Spanish were beaten by Sir Francis Drake and the English fleet, the beacons were relit to communicate the victory. In that pre-electric age, hilltop beacons could easily hold their own against radio and TV, instant messaging or social media in getting a critical message out to the population as quickly as possible.

Much more recently, some of the bells at Westminster Abbey in London were muffled (to dullen their sound) when they were rung at the end of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in September 1997. That was a replication of a method first used in medieval times to signal to local people the passing away of an important figure in their community – an early version of targeted messaging using the mass media (church bells) available at the time. What all of these examples illustrate is that the strong desire to communicate messages as quickly as possible is not simply a product of the impatient, impulsive age in which we currently live, but has always existed. Furthermore, we tend to use whatever is the latest technology to ensure that this happens. Likely to appear on the market soon are smartphones that can be “worn” as wristwatches or spectacles. Masterpieces of miniaturisation, they will permit both hands-free operation and live data streaming for their wearers, taking the concept of always being online to a whole new level. Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan’s famous aphorism “The medium is the message” may tell us that the methods or techniques we choose to send messages, in turn, affect the way we live our everyday lives. However, the desire we have as social beings to communicate with each other is so strong that “the message shapes the medium” may just be a more accurate description of the contemporary reality.
