Well boys and girls, its mid April and you know that that can only mean one thing; the gloom of the rainy season is in its last death throws and cooler drier weather will be reaching our shores soon. Sure, we’re still in the tropics, but breaking out that jumper for the cool night time breezes that usually arrive with May will be a welcome change from the sticky humidity of months recently passed. Just close your eyes and imagine that refreshing breeze blowing over a cold ocean as you sit back and watch that sunset. The best of Bali weather is yet to come. The cooler weather won’t be the only thing arriving on the island, with the summer holidays and Antarctic swell slowly building up, vacationers and surfers alike will be landing on the island. This means everything will be crowded, which sucks for rates, surfing, traffic and what not, but will be absolutely awesome for nightlife. But maybe we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves, these next two weeks, we have a few big things out there but we’d like to especially remind you to go to the Cita-Citaku Setinggi Tanah screening to benefit children with cancer at the Aston in Denpasar on April 28 at 3pm. More information on the event can be found on the last page of this magazine. As always, we have a fine selection of DJs with Audiofly at Woo Bar, Pan Pot at Mint and the multidimensional Brooke Evers at Sky Garden. There are also a few Indonesian bands coming to town for those into live music. It’s all fun and smiles as we head to a new season. We hope you enjoy it to the full.

Ari Lasso

wednesday 17 apr

Roots

Ari Bernardus Lasso, or Ari Lasso is a well-known male Indonesian singer. He was born in the city of Madiun, East Java, on January 17, 1973. The 40-year-old singer has been listening to music from the likes of Queen, Rod Stewart, The Police, Rolling Stones, and John Denver since he was in elementary school. Ari’s love for music persisted throughout his school years and finally his passion to make music was realized when he met Wawan Juniarso (the then-drummer of Dewa) and Piyu (Padi’s guitarist) during his time in SMA 2 Surabaya. Together they formed a group called Outsider Band. Later on, Ari was also recruited by the Lost Angels Band, which later altered their name to Boomerang. Through a gig with his new band, Ari was acquainted with Dhani, Erwin and Andra from Down Beat, which then became one of Indonesia’s biggest rock bands.

Sounds

Indonesian pop, pop-rock.

Where you might have heard them

Ari became the vocalist of Dewa 19. Ari’s unique voice charmed music fans nationwide, it was proven by the achievements they gathered over the years they were together. They were awarded the “Best Newcomer” award and their debut album Dewa 19 won the “Best Selling Album” award by BASF in 1993. Throughout the nine years of Ari being the vocalist, Dewa 19 sold hundreds of thousand of copies of their albums. In 1999, Ari left the band due to personal issues. After a period of rehabilitation, Ari resurfaced. His first project was a duet with Melly Goeslaw, singing Melly’s “Jika” (If), hence reviving his confidence after turning over a new leaf. In August 2001, Ari released his debut solo album titled Sendiri Dulu with its all-time hit – “Misteri Illahi”. The album sold over 500 thousand copies. His other hit singles are “Rahasia Perempuan” from Keseimbangan (Balance, 2003) and “Cinta Terakhir” from Selalu Ada (2006). The Airlangga University’s economics graduate’s latest album was released last year titled Yang Terbaik, which featured eight selected singles from his previous albums and six new singles. The album was only sold at KFC outlets.

Why see them

Ari Lasso is considered to be one of the best male solo singers in Indonesia. Having released his latest album last year, the legendary chanteur is at the peak of his career. If you want to see him live, this is your chance to feel the energy of Ari Lasso at Akasaka Music Club on April 17.

Audiofly

friday 19 apr

Roots

Audiofly is a duo based in Barcelona and is comprised of Luca Saporito and Anthony Middleton. Luca is from Sicily, Italy and Anthony hails from Hampshire, England. The former was already working as a DJ and as the in-house music selector at Selfridges store in London before Audiofly was created and the latter one used to work as an audio engineer/musician. Both shared the same taste of sounds, hence in 2002 they figured out that two is better than one in terms of skills and experience and eventually formed Audiofly.

Sounds

Comedy, psychedelic, Italian pop, house, progressive house, minimal, tech house.

Where you might have heard them

The first year is always the most crucial period for any start-up, and a DJ/producer duo is no exception. Audiofly slowly made it to the top, garnering early followers from the underground music scene (which Barcelona is very renowned for) in order to build their base before hitting major labels and releasing an album. Their first few singles, in 2004 and 2005, were not launched in Spain, but instead from Italy (“Is This For Real”, “E’ Body Jus” and “Check My Vision”) and UK (“Live Love” and “Rockin’ It”) on underground labels. Soon, they painted London red with their regular gigs there. In 2005, Peace Division’s Clive Henry asked the boys to do an EP for the now-defunct Low Pressings label and the EP entitled Release Yourself caught partygoers’ ears with its catchy beats. A few months later, the duo were already inside DJ Magazine, playing at Space in Ibiza as a resident DJ and having labels like Get Physical, Mood Music, Kickboxer and Renaissance ready to release their tracks on. In 2007, Audiofly set up a music label called Supernature to accommodate their particular genre better; this label was a stepping stone for artists like Kabuto & Koji (Costa Rica), Amelie (Ibiza/London), among others. 2011 saw the duo release their debut album, Follow My Liebe and set up a sister music label called ‘Maison D’Etre’ which boasts its murkier sounds. As if DJing and producing was not enough, they also hosted a global dance music event called Flying Circus, which featured international artists and also a radio show of the same name on Proton Radio.

Why see them

Audiofly’s achievements can be described as from zero to hero. The whole fusion of two experts in each of their own fields adds up to be more than the sum of its parts. See this duo perform some of their most eclectic tunes at Woo Bar on April 19.

Geisha

friday 19 apr

Roots

Geisha is an Indonesian band hailing from the city of Pekanbaru, Riau. The five-piece music group was founded in December 2003 and is comprised of Momo (vocalist), Roby (guitarist), Nard (bassist), Dhan (keyboardist), and Aan (drummer). They were once schoolmates in high school (SMUN 2 Pekanbaru), playing at a number of local festivals as an indie band called Jingga. They competed in a national band competition called A Mild Live Wanted 2007 and came out first at provincial level. As a finalist, they were offered an opportunity to record a single titled “Untuk Selamanya”, which would later be released on a compilation album. After the release, they changed their name to Geisha.

Sounds

Indonesian pop, progressive rock.

Where you might have heard them

2009 saw their debut album, Anugrah Terindah released, with four singles within the Top 25 best-selling singles in 2010, namely “Jika Cinta Dia” (#3), “Takkan Pernah Ada” (#6), “Selalu Salah” (#13), and “Kamu Yang Pertama” (#24). This album garnered about ten million ring back tone subscribers, and it made Geisha win the “Band Terdahsyat” award at Dahsyat-nya Awards 2011. Their second album titled Meraih Bintang (2011) also had similarly massive positive reviews as their first album. It was released via live streaming on the internet and was enthusiastically well-received in Malaysia and Hong Kong too. Being the top best-seller album in 2011, three out of 11 singles in the album, “Cinta dan Benci”, “Pergi Saja”, and “Remuk Jantungku” were placed 2nd, 9th, and 12th respectively on Top 25 Singles of the Year 2011.

Why see them

Their easy-listening songs are indeed what have made Geisha such a household name with a great number of followers and fans around the country. See them perform their best hits at Boshe on April 19.

Roots

DJ Brooke Evers was born in Adelaide, Australia in 1985 and is a top model turned DJ. Her parents who came from the Netherlands migrated to Adelaide and then relocated to the Gold Coast, Queensland. At 13, she won her first award at the Tamblyn Young Model Discovery competition and three years later she was awarded with the Performing Arts Excellence Award for Dance, Drama and Music. She was an aspiring athlete in high school, having represented herself at the national level after being the state champion in the 100m and 400m track and field events. Evers received her bachelor’s degree from Griffith University, with a degree in journalism with public relations and digital media in 2010.

Sounds

Hip hop, R&B, pop, electro.

Where you might have heard her

DJ Brooke Evers has a number of different sides, in a positive way. In line with her degree, she is currently the editor of Zoo Weekly in Sydney, after having been a journalist for ACP magazine. Besides that, she used to co-host Gold Coast’s 90.9 Sea FM’s Drive Show with Craig Lowe and was regularly featured on Brisbane’s Nova 106.9 FM. As a dancer, Evers was once selected by a group of daredevil motorcyclists to be one of their dancers during their international tour in 2005. She modeled professionally for a number of brands, notably Billabong Australia, Mrs Palmers Surf, KULU and Quicksilver Worldwide. She also made the cover of FHM and Ralph magazine. As of last year, she has been featured on both domestic and international magazines with themes ranging from fashion, health, sports and lifestyle. She also had a stint as a TV personality, where she was the host of the 2010 Rip Curl Pro and the co-host of the 2011 Australian Sexpo Tour. 2011 also saw her being on national television with her boyfriend and DJ partner Matt Stafford of the Stafford Brothers. That same year Evers was sponsored by Audio Technica Headphones Australia.

Why see her

Evers is a multi-dimensional personality who seems to exude energy in just about anything she does. Her close association with the Stafford Brothers, arguably Australia’s most famous DJs, has almost definitely put her up to scratch. Pan-Pot

saturday 20 apr

Roots

Pan-Pot is a German duo hailing from Berlin, Germany, which consists Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix. They listened to a mix of different genres like hip hop, house and of course techno during their teenage years. Before meeting each other, Tassilo was studying journalism in Bavaria and Thomas was a cook in Templin, Bradenburg. They first met during an audio engineering course at the prestigious SAE Institute Berlin in 2003 and were the only ones in class that loved techno. That was the start of their 10-year friendship and in 2005, they dubbed themselves Pan-Pot which refers to panoramic potentiometer – a simple device, a simple knob that sends a signal either left or right on a stereo.

Sounds Techno.

Where you might have heard them

Pan-Pot booked Anja Schneider to their very first party in 2005, only to find themselves having a great chat with her because of the fact that only ten people attended the ill-fated party. Having forged a strong connection with Anja who founded Mobilee records, Pan-Pot released their debut track “Popy and Paste” on the label. The convention-defying duo went on to be a hit in Berlin and beyond with the release of their debut album titled Pan-O-Rama in 2007, which contained somber techno singles such as “Charly” featuring Hugh Betcha. After their throbbing EP “Captain My Captain” and their remix of Slam’s “Lifetimes” garnered massive positive reviews, Pan-Pot worked on “Gravity” featuring G-Tech, another masterpiece that was #3 in the Beatport techno charts and was later remixed twice by Safeword and San Francisco. Following their triumph chart-wise, they kept producing countless of originals and remixes for the likes of Booka Shade. Amongst their works, there is also a documentary about the duo filmed by Sebastian Radlmeier which was released in December last year titled Back To Back Vol. Six.

Why see them

Some of Pan-Pot’s recent hit tracks are quite different from their previous tunes, pushing the boundaries of techno. See them live at Mint on April 20.

Homegrown & Well Known

Interview by Rudolf Dethu

gained respect by mixing craftsmanship, guitars and activism. Bayak is one of today’s most distinctive young artists from Bali. His band, Geekssmile, ditched the conventional Indonesian band template: quit cheesy love songs and basically crying for a more socially conscious ethos.

Are you a guitarist or a visual artist? I prefer to call myself as an artist (as recorded on my KTP/Indonesian ID card). You know, I grew up in a village where being artistic is a normal part of daily life. So since I was a kid I’ve been into drawing. Since the age of seven I’ve been drawing figures from wayang stories. Not only drawing on paper, I sometimes draw outlines on coconut skins and then etch into the coconut manually. My interest in (rock) music began after I was “ambushed” by my cousin (and his friends) who are older than me. He liked cranking up the volume of metal records that he owned like Metallica and Helloween, from his self-modified speakers, at whatever time he/they wished. That was the

92

www.beatmag.com

era when I was introduced to the guitar. After graduating from middle school I continued to a senior high school that specialised in visual arts. That’s when I became really inspired to mix music and visual art. My finest moment was when my band mates in Geekssmile decided to let me interpret each song in our album Upeti Untuk Macan Asia into visual art, which became the concept for the artwork of the album.

You just got back from exhibiting in Singapore. How was it? That wasn’t your first overseas exhibition right? True, my exhibition in Singapore wasn’t my first overseas exhibition. In 2010 I was included in the Pozan Biennale in Poland, and the year after in Hanover, Germany, and this year also in Germany (Frankfurt, to be precise). But, yeah, it was just my art work, without me included! For this Singapore exhibition, I sent my artwork into their competition. I was chosen as one of 20 young finalists from Southeast Asia. My artwork was exhibited at Espace Louis Vuitton Singapore. A few

FEATURES colleagues of mine were kind enough to sponsor me to attend the opening night of the exhibition. Even though I wasn’t there for long, I noticed that the art scene over there seems to run well. There are so many established galleries and public spaces filled with art pieces. Public appreciation seems great as well—you see school kids come to the museum for art studies. At their museum (which is owned by the government), they collect works not only from veteran, established artists, but also young artists. You even find young Indonesian artists as part of the collections. You can really tell that the Singapore government is actively involved in supporting the art scene.

Any big plans for your upcoming visual art activities? Another mural project, perhaps? I just did a five-day workshop at Bali Spirit Festival. In the very near future I plan to hold a solo exhibition at Arys Warung, Ubud, and join a group exhibition with the collective Ten Fine Arts - Sanur at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. I will also continue to apply to join biennales overseas. At the moment I’m focusing on my own “Plasticology” theme, where I transform plastic trash into works of art. The idea is quite straightforward: to respond to big issues with simple actions. Regarding murals, I still do one every once in a while—I can’t quit doing it, I think it’s in my blood already. I’m a big supporter of mural activities as they’re soaked with street cred. When you create a mural, you do it on the street, exposed to the community, the outside world, the smog, reality. Plus here, in this mural world, art doesn’t feel arrogant, or separated from mainstream life, cause it’s so easily accessible for everyone. You get direct appreciation or criticism right from “the critics”/the public. They either protest to you on the spot or by vandalising your artwork. I like this sense of egalitarianism.

And your band, Geekssmile, what’s the latest news? We are in the process of recording a few new songs while finishing up other songs that are already half ready. Aside from that, we are in the early stages of making our second video clip. We also keep producing propaganda tools, and are building our own website.

I really respect your band. I think, like you, that bands in Indonesia should be more socially

conscious rather than just singing cheesy love songs. This country is in critical condition. Musicians should participate in inspiring the youth to be the agents of change. What you said is true, the situation in Indonesia is critical. It would be better if us young people in bands tried to contribute something to this country by doing things that we are good at: singing or even screaming, while making a constructive contribution to society. We can’t just act as if everything is alright so let’s sing love songs. People can do whatever they want, but I just think this country is in an emergency situation and we should recognise it as such. As a band, we participate in almost every social cause or rally—especially in the context of environmental and human rights issues. We work a lot with WALHI (an environmental NGO) and Frontier (the student activists collective) especially. We sing at their events and sometimes join rallies on the streets with them.

Name three of you all-time musicians-cum-activists and why.

favourite

Just so you know, Geekssmile was founded after being massively inspired by Rage Against The Machine. That’s why I am naming two of their personnel here: Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello. Zack, the vocalist, screams protest in every lyric he spits out. The more I listen to him, the more I want to know about him. His reference, his words, he’s a living (activism) library. While Tom, as well has being a brilliant guitar innovator, is also a real activist. He’s seriously pro minorities, and built a foundation for advocation for minorities, fighting for justice. My other idol is Herry Sutresna—better known as Ucok Homicide. A true visionary, wicked lyricist, and rhyme terrorist. He uses lots of strange yet sophisticated Indonesian words, mixes them all together, and when he shouts them out, those words become deadly weapons with super strong venom. He’s a punk poet, a lavish linguist, and a revolutionary rapper. Oh, plus he’s not only singing/rapping on stage but also down on the streets, a true activist.

Any last nagging words? Every person is born with their own weaponry. Sharpen it and use it to fix problems, not to stab and spill blood.

whole idea of moving to an island like Bali is so that you can slow the pace, escape the stress and get out of the fast lane. It seems however, that even here there is no escape as life catches up with us... even here. How often these days we go weeks without catching up with old friends who all claim to be “so busy”? Busy has become a by-word for the choices we make, how we choose to spend our time in this day and age and even moving to an island seems to make little difference to the world-wide phenomenon of busyness. A recent opinion piece in the New York Times bemoans the fact that our conversations seem peppered with the “B” word. Even those who attempt to embrace idleness and value their down time very often get caught up in the constant pressure to do more, be more and have more. There are some obvious factors at play. Sitting with a friend the other day, her phone was constantly ringing. “It’s not ringing, it’s my messages coming in,” she explained. She had created a loud ringtone for her message alert because she wasn’t hearing it before. When I asked her why she had to hear it every time she received a message, she stopped to think. “They won’t disappear,” I told her. The fact that everywhere we go we are expected to be in touch, to reply to every message promptly, to always be contactable, surely a factor at play here. Why is it that people expect an instant reply to every message? We are living in a last minute.com world it sometimes seems. Where people can decide they’d like to go to dinner in half hour and call all their friends to see if they would like to drop everything and join. If they find we’re already busy well we can have a good old catch up by phone or text message anyway. Forget the fact that you may already be at dinner with someone else, or reading to your child, or enjoying a quiet drink on your verandah, someone is calling and you’d better answer. Are we scared of missing something? We fill our lives with sound bites and social media phenomena like Twitter and Four Square are surely signs that we feel like we’re not really alive unless a lot of people now about it.

What’s wrong with a little down time? Why do we feel we have to fill every minute with sound and be plugged in all the time, simply to feel we are worthwhile? Multi-tasking gone mad perhaps? Another friend recently put himself on a Facebook diet; he just switched it off for a while. The number of posts asking where he was, had anyone seen him, when would he rejoin the human race, were laughable. He of course was blissfully unaware of this; he simply got sick of the noise in his life. Why can’t more of us do this? What stops us from turning off the phone, walking away from the computer? Part of the reasons we feel so busy all the time, I suspect, is that we have so little uninterrupted time, not enough space to focus on one task at a time, one conversation at a time. The phone, the computer or some “urgent” matter always comes up. Everything is urgent these days it seems. The friend who calls and doesn’t get an answer, gets all stinky. Our children expect an answer immediately to every query. Clients ring to ask if you got the email they sent two minutes ago. No wonder we are all suffering stress related illnesses and eventually psychosis. The next time you are trying to find change for your taxi and your phone rings repeatedly or you’re sitting on the toilet and you can hear your phone in the other room beeping non stop, take a moment to monitor how it makes you feel. Stressed, busy, without a moment to yourself or to have a good long chat with a friend you haven’t seen in too long? You bet? Busy maybe, but more likely you simply need to unplug on a regular basis and explain to friends and clients that you will get back to them in due time. We aren’t machines after all, balance above all things, will make us happier, better people. A little time alone without the world crowding in on you can’t be a bad thing either. Otherwise how will YOU know how you’re doing? Everyone else might be aware that you just ate sushi, but take a minute before you post to think about how it made you feel. The old adage, take the time to smell the tuber roses come back to me at this time, the virtual ones just don’t cut it. Get real, take your time and enjoy life and turn off the phone sometimes.

There are many who insist that ‘real’ music shalt not be composed on anything as modern and vulgar as a computer, and indeed, true aural beauty can only be achieved by using a handcrafted guitar made out of matchsticks, an antique double bass and a pre-1980 8-track analogue recorder. “Bollocks”, says Simon Green, champion of digital music and sole member of electronic one-piece Bonobo. Ever since 2001’s Animal Magic, he’s been proving that with a playful inventiveness and the right amount of attention to detail, there is splendour to be found amidst all those I’s and 0’s. Few producers are as adept as Green at breathing life into digital music, creating a wonderfully organic sound with only a laptop and equalizer for company – more like honey in the hard drive than ghost in the machine. After 2010’s coming of age LP Black Sands, album number five; The North Borders, is a solid continuation and gentle evolution of the Bonobo sound, where lo-fi, downtempo beats and sampled components are carefully built up layer by layer, going from gentle fluttering notes all the way up to a pulsing apex, before being brought down to earth again and fading out of the speakers like the end of a twinkling daydream. Featuring the guest vocals of fellow Ninja Tune label mate Grey Reverend, “First Fires” is the perfect entry point to The North Borders, with skittering beats punctuating a gently rising string arrangement that invokes something Thom Yorke might have rustled up had he been feeling a tad more melodious during The Eraser sessions. Like previous Bonobo albums, there is a sprinkling of guest vocalists - “Towers” and “Transit” (Szjerdene), and tripped out album closer “Pieces” (Cornelia?), but it’s the ever stunning (and infinitely more well known) Erykah Badu who steals the show on “Heaven For The Sinner” with an extra terrestrial vocal track tripping over the pseudo RnB groove. Other highpoints include the sublime Oriental style hook of “Sapphire”, the pulsing, post dub of “Know You” and the chiming wonder of first single “Cirrus”.

The North Borders never really makes it out of second gear, but then it’s not meant to - it’s music to bob your head to, perfect sunset fodder or the soundtrack to the after party’s after party, but most of all it’s a faultless example of digital music with heart and soul. Dan Ashcroft

GIZMOS The Finger Swipe Headphones

The 100 Greatest Classics Audio Book

These are the wireless Bluetooth headphones that are controlled with the swipe of a finger. Unlike typical wireless headphones that leave users fumbling blindly for buttons, this model incorporates the same sensitive touchpads found in smartphones and tablets. Sliding a finger up and down the left earpiece raises or lowers the volume, while swiping a finger horizontally advances or rewinds a track. The music stops when an incoming call is received, allowing the wearer to answer using the unit’s built-in microphone. With a frequency response of 20Hz to 2KHz, the 40mm drivers deliver rich sound from any audio source, while soft padding on the ear cups and headpiece lets users listen for hours in comfort. www.hammacher.com $149.95

This palm-sized library contains audio versions of the 100 greatest classic books. Eliminating the hassle of downloading files, the lightweight player comes pre-loaded with unabridged texts by noteworthy authors including Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Jane Austen. Henry and Kipling, plays by Ibsen and Shakespeare, and philosophical treatises by Nietzsche and Aristotle (see hammacher. com for a complete list of titles). Its full 600 hours of entertainment also include 50 classical music favorites by Mozart, Chopin and other composers. The portable 1-oz. device makes it easy to catch up on the classics on the go; it even comes with an adapter so it can be played through a car radio. Battery lasts for up to eight hours after an eight-hour charge using the included USB cable. www.hammacher.com $99.95

Through this exhibition, he’d like to showcase his vision on Indonesian culture and reveal the first stage in establishing his postmodern art. Visit Elka’s first exhibition that runs through to May 5.

SPA

Nirwana Spa at Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort Check out the healing properties of this spa which happens to come with an amazing Tanah Lot view.

Ingredients:

Look:

Located right next to the famous Tanah Lot sea temple, far from the madding crowds of the south, the Pan Pacific Nirwana Resort is set amongst some of the most stunning scenery in Bali. Surrounded by lush paddy fields and the ruggedly beautiful coastline of Tabanan, there can be few places more therapeutic for the mind, body and soul. At the heart of the resort lies a haven of wellbeing in the beautifully refined Nirwana Spa complex, where an aura of calm pervades every corner. Rich wooden accents and neutral stone colours throughout mean that the spa has a grand ‘old Bali’ feel.

Feel:

Think classic treatments and spa therapy sessions in tranquil seclusion from your own private room, where experienced therapists will cater to your every need to ensure comfort, relaxation and rejuvenation. Expect world-class holistic treatments that will leave you feeling pampered beyond belief - particularly if you happen to indulge in a couple of post treatment cocktails on the lawn, overlooking the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean with the sun going down over Tanah Lot, one of Bali’s holiest and most spectacular temples.

All massage oils are carefully blended from natural ingredients, and you can be assured that only the most luxurious, highest quality products are used at Nirwana spa. Natural, organic sea salt, pure ground coffee beans and fine pumice come together for the highly recommended Coffee Scrub (450k++/60 minutes), and the Marine Algo (450k++/60minutes) utilizes seaweed and aromatherapy to revitalize the skin and senses. Elsewhere a selection of signature treatments feature Balinese herbs, fragrant flowers or even chocolate and mango. However, if you simply can’t decide from all the options then Nirwana spa encourages guests to take a consultation session to discuss the best course of treatment.

Magic:

Along with the standard spa menu treatments, Nirwana Spa features an exclusive special treatment that changes every three months. Currently, it’s the nourishing Tomato Scrub (750k++), featuring a Balinese massage, tomato scrub and a body wrap. Rich in vitamins A, B and C, tomatoes also contain Lycopene, which is good for skin nutrition and antiaging, so those looking for a natural lift to tired looking skin would be well advised to check out this two-hour treatment that is unique to Nirwana spa. ighting cancer is a daunting task for just about everyone involved and when children are diagnosed with it, it pulls many a heart string. That’s why it’s of extreme importance to support organizations like Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia (YKAKI) whose sole purpose is to help the most vulnerable in our society tackle an uphill battle with a deadly disease. A group of filmmakers are holding a charity event on April 28 at 3pm to 5pm at the Aston Denpasar where they will be screening Cita-Citaku Setinggi Tanah (Stepping on the Flying Grass) in order to benefit the organization. The event is in conjunction with the opening of YKAKI’s new facilities nearby Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar. The movie is about four school children in Central Java and their dreams and aspirations. It’s in essence a human study of the wants and desires for better things at the expense of the simpler pleasures in life.

The event will cost 50k per person with all proceeds going towards charity and includes a screening of the film, a special presentation on the challenges of being a child with cancer and a discussion session with the director of the movie. So if you can make the time, please support this noble cause and help ease the burden of children and their families struggling against a truly horrible disease. Go to the Aston on April 28 and make a difference. Jl. Pulau Rembulan no. 15, Denpasar, Indonesia. T. 221 520 www.ykakbali.org www.ccstthemovie.com
