Last Wednesday night I had some friends in town and we went out for a couple of drinks in the bigger venues and no kidding, it was like a ghost town. One new place had about six people when we arrived, another had no more than thirty and they were all kids, and when we arrived at the last venue I think we were the only people there. OK, we didn’t do downtown Kuta on this foray, but it does make me wonder what the heck is going on. Tourist numbers aren’t that down. They may be down a bit compared to last year but not much. So what is it? Tourists have always partied on these shores seven days a week but where are they now? All stuck in Kuta? There could be a variety of things happening here. Maybe there are too many venues, with the crowd being dissipated and spread too thin, or maybe the tourists coming here simply don’t party as much as they did. Another possibility is that they can’t get out of Kuta because of the ridiculous traffic jam after midnight every night caused by sleeping taxi drivers on Jalan Legian. I always thought the reverse was the problem – people from out of town not being able to get in to Kuta. But the reverse could also be the case and maybe all those tourists, both young and old, don’t have the option to move. As we have said here many times before, many of the problems in this town’s nightlife stem from those rude and ignorant taxi drivers in the centre of Kuta. With the traffic blocked every single night of the week, like any arterial network, eventually the whole thing stops functioning with a cancerous growth at the heart of it. It appears to me that a certain section of the community, who are also living from the nightlife, are also the ones causing the biggest problem and no one is doing anything about it. Can the Badung Regency step up to the plate please, the local community is crying out for it. And meanwhile back at the ranch, we’d like to present two venues that should be adding a little class to the Seminyak scene over the next few weeks, Slippery Stone and Bistrot. Slippery Stone is presenting Dipha Barus which should be a very cool event and Bistrot is employing the services of a veteran and very talented DJ, the venerable Hans Havenaar or DJ Haha. So break out your Sunday best for these two parties. The W is hosting the lovely Nina Kraviz, Mint is presenting Radio Slave, Sky Garden has Tom Piper, and Hu’u Bar is will have a DJ set by Van She. If this is just a preview of high season, we’re officially excited.

Sandhy Sondoro to Represent Hard Rock Cafe Bali in Hard Rock’s Global Competition After battling it all out for several rounds against some 941 top-tier local bands, Sandhy Sondoro came out first and has the chance to win the global competition. This time, Sandhy Sondoro needs to outshine the other 95 winning bands from 95 cities around the globe in order to secure the dream-come-true first prize - a World Tour in six renowned cities arranged by Hard Rock International, including a chance to perform at the Hard Rock Calling festival in London; an album and music video produced through Hard Rock Records; and new music equipment and gear valued at 10,000 US dollars. Sandhy is calling upon everyone to support him in the upcoming global competition by voting for him via Hard Rock Cafe Bali’s Facebook account from April 22 - May 1 in order to be in the Top 25 and move on to the next round.
InterContinental Bali Now Has Christian Madsen as Resort Manager Mr. Christian Madsen is the new resort manager of InterContinental Bali. The appointment is based on his impressive track record, most notably being the hotel manager at the luxurious InterContinental Phoenicia Beirut, Lebanon for two years. Prior to that, Mr. Madsen spent 14 years in the hospitality industry. The former Danish military officer and Danish Hotel Academy graduate was promoted to operations manager back when he joined a resort in Oman. His stellar leadership has allowed him to hold similar positions in many other countries including United Arab Emirates, Thailand and Malaysia. With his burning passion and creative mind, it will only be natural that InterContinental will be thriving under his leadership.

Alex Niggemann
friday 26 apr
Roots
Alex Niggemann is a music producer, a DJ and a label owner hailing from Düsseldorf in western Germany. He was born in 1984 and as a young boy he had a penchant for playing his piano but later dropped it. When his older brother took him to a techno party, the 15-year-old Niggemann had an epiphany. Soon, his room turned into a studio and through the DJ community in Düsseldorf, one thing led to another and Niggemann was successfully playing at numerous local clubs.
Sounds House.
Where you might have heard him
One way to describe Niggemann would be his desire to reach perfection in each and every one of his sets. To accommodate this, he made himself a producer and changed his old-school hip hop style into techno and later on into house. He has gone by a few monikers (N.I.G.G.I., Superlounge) and held quite a few residencies. After high school in 2005, Niggemann moved to Berlin to study audio engineering while working for DJ T. His first remixed track, Booka Shade’s “Darko” heightened Niggemann’s profile. From then, things just kept getting better with more releases under different labels such as Meerestief, Micro. fon, Moonpool, Sportclub and Freak Waves. A year later, he was awarded with the #8 position on Resident Advisor‘s ‘Top 20 Charted Artists in 2009. This achievement whisked him to many exotic clubs around the world, including Ibiza’s Space and Privilege, Brazil’s D-Edge and Berlin’s Watergate.
Why see him
Niggemann has gigged around the world and has his sights set on conquering Asia. Does he have what it takes to impress the discerning Seminyak crowd? Find out at Mint on April 26.

Tom Piper
saturday 27 apr
Roots
Tom Piper is a world class DJ, producer, record label owner (L.G.F.U.), and radio host hailing from Sydney. During the 90s, he was still a fan of rave parties before deciding to take the DJ podium all by himself and gravitated towards house music. Through the help of his production mentor Alex K, Piper got to release his first few tracks on both CD and vinyl as well as go on a European tour. Piper is very active in Australia especially Sydney and has regular performances, residencies at nightclubs and festivals. He is also known by his other less-famous monikers, such as Sonny, R-Son, Landen Platz, and Plus 8.
Sounds
Electro, house, tech, dubstep.
Where you might have heard them
Tom Piper’s life can be described as enigmatic. In 2010, he was placed at #17 on Sony ITM50 DJ Poll. His extensive range of genres played or rather found in his tracks attracted many big names in the EDM scene such as Laidback Luke, Tiësto, and David Guetta. Piper also has four original ARIA chart hits and over eight ARIA chart remixes under his belt. In May 2007, he established an independent indie label called Bambam Muzik with his mate, Pablo Calamari aka Elroy. Piper uses his own label to get his music dropped first, before releasing it on bigger and more far-reaching imprints like Ministry of Sound and Sony Music professionally. Bambam Muzik is also home to Tom and Pablo’s group called The Jump Off, under which they both released a track titled “Rackhunters”. The band collaborated with UK legend Tayo in 2006 and got to produce a track called “Down Under Dub” which was featured on worldwide the DMC release These are the Breaks mixed by Tayo. The compilation hit #3 on the beats and breaks Chart in UK DJ Mag. He has applied his Midas touch for tracks by Grafton Primary, Sidney Samson, Empire of the Sun and countless others over the years. Since 2010 too, Tom Piper was crowned to be the Ministry of Sound Australia radio host, giving out his fresh tracks on airplay that spans across the electronic spectrum.
Why see them
Tom Piper has achieved so many great things and has reached success in a very short period of time. If you do not believe how fresh and skillful he is behind the decks, head down to Sky Dome@Sky Garden on April 27 and see for yourself.

Emily Elbert
monday 29 apr
Roots
Emily Elbert is an American singer-songwriter, born on December 21, 1988. Elbert grew up in Dallas, Texas to a teacher and a pianist parents. Through her parents, Elbert played the piano, then moved on to the guitar at 15 and having been inspired by Jimi Hendrix, began to sing. In 2005, she found out about a program by Berklee called Five-Week Summer Performance Program which seemed to be within easier reach than applying to Berklee as a full-time student. She paid for the program by performing anywhere she could and at any parties that would have her.
Sounds
Soul, folk, pop.
Where you might have heard them
In 2006, Elbert produced her debut album titled Bright Side. The CD album together with her live performances made enough cash for her to enter the five-week program at Berklee. A year later, she was admitted to Berklee on a full-tuition scholarship. 2010 saw her dropping her sophomore album titled Proof. The album was helped along by accomplished musicians from Berklee such as professor Stephen Webber and professor and Grammywinning cellist – Eugene Friesen. Elbert’s third and latest album, Alive, In Love (2011) was even more awesome than her previous ones. It was funded entirely by her fans through a crowd-sourcing platform and recorded, arranged, performed, produced, and filmed by Berklee students. Elbert has also been the opening act for many international artists and performed at many international festivals like the recent Java Jazz Festival. Plenty of radio stations and television channels in the USA, Europe and Asia have also featured her on their programs. Up till today, 24-year-old Elbert already clinched many awards, she was in Glamour Magazine’s Top 10 College Women of 2010, #1 at Burnsong Contest in Scotland, Best New Artist of the Year by WUMB Radio in Boston, one of four female vocalists in the 2007 Gibson-Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble which performed at the Grammys in Los Angeles, #1 at 2007 Texas Music Project’s “Texas 10 Under 20” Contest, amongst many others.
Why see them
Now that Elbert has graduated from Berklee with a diploma, she is an all-round musician with both a musical education and real world experience. Having won many awards, she seems to be one to look out for. As part of her Southeast Asian Tour, see the songstress live when she performs at Ryoshi Seminyak on April 29.

Roots
Supercozi is a Japanese DJ, producer and label owner hailing from Yokohama, Japan. Since her graduation from high school, she lived a few years in Tokyo, then to the United Kingdom and now she is based in Bali. She used to be in the indie band scene, first during high school and then between 1985-1993 in Tokyo with three boys before deciding to quit university at 19. Supercozi took the role of vocalist and rhythm guitarist in a indie punk band and succeeded in releasing three albums but didn’t achieve commercial success. Now, she is also known by her other monikers, most notably G.B Catalyzer.
Sounds
Psy-chill, glitch hop, techno, ambient, trance.
Where you might have heard her
After quitting the band, Supercozi started making music on her own computer using her ear for music and talent on the guitar. She found her true self and started DJing around Tokyo at local clubs and parties in 1997. In late 1999, after playing gigs at some rave parties in Australia, she met Gus Till (her husband) during her DJ tour and decided to travel to the UK with him. They produced some psychedelic tracks together and got tracked down by London-based label Dragonfly Records and eventually released their debut shared work Lemon Soul in 2002 under the Zen Lemonade moniker. Soon they were invited to some of the most exotic parties such as Solstice Music Festival (Japan), Samothraki Dance Festival (Greece), Fusion Festival (USA), and Utopia (Portugal). In 2002, she and Gus relocated to Bali where she has also had been hosting regular radio shows on chill-out radio stations like Digital Koffee Australia, The Beat Radio Plus 98.5 Bali FM, and West Radio Greece. As a full-time solo artist and a mother, Supercozi also manages her own label Hypo=Espresso Records established in 2005 which launched her debut solo album titled Luxury Addicts. In 2009, under Zen Lemonade, she and Gus hit the market with their sophomore album titled Babylondon which features plenty of Balinese nuances and Greek electronic soundscapes. Some of her songs were also featured in a documentary omnibus film called “Echoes of Bali” which showcased Balinese arts in an intimate perspective.
Why see her
One who listens to her genre-crossing tracks just cannot refuse but to dive deeper into her sea of creativity. As her slogan says ‘Express in free form, live in freestyle’, you too can express yourself freely when she performs some dance and chill-out sounds at Cocoon Beach Club on May 5.

She soon got her own decks and started training with them. In 2007, she earned her first residency at one of the most prestigious clubs in Russia, Propaganda, and stayed there for two years. Around the same time, Nina collaborated with MySpaceRocket where she performed vocals but soon split off after releasing “Amok” on Greg Wilson’s B77 label.
Sounds
House, techno, deep house.
Where you might have heard her
At first, her unique type of music was not well-received due to the fact that only a small percentage of labels in Russia were looking for her type of sounds. In 2008, Nina decided to begin producing and publishing her music all by herself on the internet. A year later, the budding producer already found her luck by having American DJ Jus-Ed release her original track “Voices” on his own Underground Quality imprint along with the track’s remixes done by his mates and himself. Nina continued to inject her underground sound on the same label by hitting the stores with her second track on UQ’s “First Time” EP. That same year, she reunited with her old friend during her stint at RBMA Melbourne – Rekids’ boss, Matt Edwards, and he agreed to release her solo single “Pain in the Ass” which proved to be her great leap to a bigger electronic dance arena. Nina found herself later doing a collaboration with Efdemin for his debut release titled “Hotter Than July/Sun” on his own Naif label. 2011 also saw her receiving many gig requests; she dropped a second track on Naif, a second track on Rekids (“I’m Week”), remixed Okain’s “Scream” on Tsuba, and co-worked with Sascha Funke on BPitch Control among others.
Why see her
The W meticulously chose their acts and Kraviz should be no exception to their excellent line up. See her and hear her sounds for yourself when she performs at Woo Bar on May 9.

Roots
Radio Slave originally consisted of two people, Matthew Edwards and Serge Santiágo before the latter eventually left. Edwards was born in Britain in 1975 and is a co-founder of Rekids (together with James Masters) music label and many other pseudonyms which include Cabin Fever, Canvas, Sea Devils, Quiet Village, and of course... Radio Slave. Matt’s musical upbringing started when he was a child in South London and had a lot of exposure to different kinds of music. He collected many records back then, founded Rekids label in 2006 and now he is based in Berlin, Germany.
Sounds
Electronica, fusion, house, techno.
Where you might have heard him
As Radio Slave, Matthew has always been in demand for remixing songs for Busta Rhymes, Kylie Minogue, Limp Bizkit, Nancy Sinatra to name a few and a lot of people try to copy the way he remixes. However, the well-respected remixer and song re-editor prefers to produce his own tracks, over the years Radio Slave has released many underground hit tracks like “My Bleep”, “Bell Clap Dance”, “The No Sleep” series and “Grindhouse”. His first gig started locally in London where he earned a residency at the Milk Bar in 1992, followed by being a resident at Ministry of Sound. He has been in and out turning the turntables at some of the best nightclubs in the world and he currently plays regularly at Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Paris’ Rex Club. Radio Slave was voted to be the Best British Producer in the Best of British awards and highly regarded to be the greatest remixer in British history. His most recent mind-blowing hit is “No. 48” in his Fabric compilation series along with Strictly Rhythms Vol. 5. Radio Slave has also been headlining many international festivals such as London’s Planet E party. His latest release dropped in 2013 was his remix of Runaway’s “N.I.N.A.”. As his other alter ego, The Machine, Matthew has produced a few signature combinations of audio and visuals featuring six pop tracks contributed by pop artists around the region.
Why see him
Radio Slave has all the credentials you would want in a good DJ and all indications show that this will be an awesome show. Don’t miss his performance at Mint on May 9 to hear his eclectic sounds.

Other than Putu, Made, Nyoman and Ketut, one of the most generic names you’re likely to find in Bali is “Gusde”. People get so confused when you say it they have no choice but to ask “which one?” When the answer is “Gus De Photography”, everyone knows. So, do you know Gus De? This one tried to be a banker once. Rejecting him may well be the best decision an Indonesian bank has ever made.

FEATURES
Y
ou’re one of few prominent figures in the Bali photography scene. How did your career start? What got you into photography? You know, my parents wanted me to be a banker? I took economics as my main subject when I was at Uni, just to be a good son to my parents. I did get my degree but it turned out that it wasn’t so easy to find a job. No banks accepted my application. For three years I was unemployed. I went back to college and this time I enrolled to study graphic design. Mind you, I had been wanting to go to graphic design school forever, but never got approval from my parents. I’ve always been into art, always liked painting—I guess it’s an influence from my grandfather who’s a painter. I painted a lot when I was a kid, won quite a few trophies representing my school in painting. I landed in the photography world after getting a job working as a graphic designer for a surf company in Kuta. I had to buy a digital pocket camera as a support tool for my job and I used it quite a lot, work wise. Having to use this little camera, I became fascinated by photography, I really wanted to be able to take pictures properly. I learned from the internet, joined online photography clubs, and talked to photography enthusiasts who were part of these virtual communities. Then one day I took one of the bravest steps in my life: I purchased a DSLR. Guess I may not be the greatest example in making parents happy! What obstacles have you faced in your career? Anything major? This photography thing all started as a hobby. I never dreamt that I would be doing this professionally, making a living out of it. After I purchased a DSLR camera, even though I was really excited, I didn’t think I would get this far. In the beginning it was a bit hard for me to find people that I clicked with. I mean, yeah sure there were a few photography enthusiasts out there but they were pretty much doing their own thing. So I began to connect with people from outside of Bali as I was quite active in photography forums, particularly international photography forums. They were so open, people who were interacting through these networks didn’t think twice about sharing knowledge. They certainly weren’t afraid of anyone becoming their competition. I learned a lot from them. I didn’t have quite the same
experience with photography enthusiasts in Bali as, back then, they tended to be kind of individualistic and, overall, not the types to share. I spent around three years as an amateur, hobbybased, photographer and then began to step into the professional scene by taking landscape pictures and also photographing lesser-known models. After I had taken those steps, thanks to a friend’s recommendation, I found myself taking photos for national fashion magazines. Mind you, there’s a problem between local and overseas photographers here in Indonesia: we get paid differently. It’s classic. Despite obvious proof to counter this argument, local photographers are considered to be of a lower class. Both local and foreign clients appear to think that what we produce lacks quality, that our work is not professional and then, of course, this line is thrown at us to justify cheap and disrespectful payment for our work. Meanwhile, overseas photographers, without scrutiny, are considered to produce work that is better in quality, more professional, and therefore are automatically offered much higher payments. As a matter of fact, between local and overseas photographers, there isn’t much difference anymore, we’re the same. The real problem with local photographers is that we can’t—I can’t—sell ourselves. We are bad at communicating our worth and we are not the best negotiators. It’s often because we can’t speak English well enough to express ourselves confidently but it’s also because, in our very own culture, we are not taught to talk directly, it is considered impolite to name your price (except when you are in a traditional market, or a shop selling something, basically anywhere where one is practicing “real” trading). Overseas photographers have already won from the outset. They speak English confidently, know how to sell themselves, and have zero problem getting straight to the point. This is the real reason they are getting people to pay them right. But locals deserve to be paid right too, without having to breach our culture. I don’t mean to generalize, and the issue that I’m trying to raise isn’t that overseas photographers shouldn’t be working here or that they are bad, I’m just trying to highlight the fact that this unfounded discrimination is a reality, and it something that local photographers, talented photographers, are faced with each and every day. The
recent story of Komang, the beer drinking cop, has attracted worldwide attention after he was captured on film taking a money from a foreign motorcyclist and then using the it to buy himself and his undercover tourist some beer. In many parts of the world, this act would spark riots, however, here in Bali, the reactions have been very mixed. Not only did the cop and his friend not lose their jobs, although they have been disciplined, in some circles they have been supported and celebrated. Celebrated, you ask? Even the ethics committee were quick to point out that at least Komang was polite and hospitable, even shouting the guy a beer from the money. Many from the local

In fact, it gives tourists and expats a little leverage if you think about it. The other day, as the transport guy at the airport tried to overcharge me yet again, I pointed out that I may have a hidden camera and he may be appearing soon on Youtube. The collectors were a little taken aback and the price was lowered. Thanks Komang. Which brings me to another subject that in fact

deserves even more attention, and is getting very little.... Where is the cheese? It seems that import licenses are once again getting an overhaul. The shelves are empty of our favourite staples, grown women are reduced to tears, children are being deprived and the price of everything in the supermarket has gone through the roof. Apples in Bali Deli are selling for $13 a kilo! That’s
right folks. Rumours in the circles who know are talking about the government trying to insist that all cheese be made locally. Are they kidding? France or Indonesia? I know which I’m picking. If you’ve been here long enough, you know how to work with the system, but when it interrupts our daily lives, threatens to throw us into deepest Denpasar to visit the cop shop and attacks our fridges, then it’s time for a shake up. My friend Sonny was the manager of Liquid in Dhyana Pura and a DJ so after teaching me the basics he gave me the 8-9pm slot playing for the janitors. What sort of music do you like to DJ? Anything with some oomph to it. Tech-house, techno, minimal and progressive house.

What’s your favorite song that gets the crowd jumping up and down? The “Harlem Shake” hahaha... What is it like to work in Bali? It’s paradise! There’s a lot of potential. Musically Bali’s growing and a lot of international talent is being brought in. Thank god I have an Indonesian citizenship now and that makes working here much easier, because working permits can be a hassle for DJs looking for work. What is you’re favorite club in Bali? Pyramid and not because I work there haha... I love the vibe and the music there, its a great new club and a breath of fresh air to Bali nightlife. (Boss if you’re reading this don’t forget my free drink).

Have you played anywhere apart from Bali, Where was you’re favorite place? I’ve played clubs in Greece and Italy but I’d have to say that it would be the two years spent in London that helped me develop my skills and taste to what it is today, I played at insane warehouse parties and even got a gig in Ministry of Sound and Fabric. That was really something.
What’s the most annoying song that’s been stuck in your head for the passed week? The “Harlem Shake”.
Where do you think the wildest parties happen? Ibiza by far.
Do you pre-plan your sets? Never... I go with the flow.
Where is your dream place to play at? Ibiza, I would love to do a summer season there.
Where do you think you’ll be in 10 years? Don’t know... but hopefully in a good place.
What is you’re favorite movie at the moment? Don’t have a specific one but Blood Diamond, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Lord of War are the kind of movies I like.
Best song to play at the end of a set? Sounds rushing (David West remix) - Dominic Plaza.
What’s the craziest thing that you’ve seen on the dance floor? Two people getting naked and forgetting that they were surrounded by people...

In post-war Hong Kong, Ip Man (Anthony Wong) is having a honeymoon with his wife, Cheung Wing-sing (Anita Yuen). Ip Man has no choice but to fight so as to uphold his honor. Like most movies set in Hong Kong, there’ll be some great fight scenes, but one of the beauties of this picture is the historical time period portrayed.

More Than Just a Wine, Plaga likes to Play! There is a new wine available on the island called Plaga. It’s made from Chilean grapes, and fermented and bottled right here in Bali. At the moment there are three varieties of the wine available; Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and a Rose and soon their first Cab Sauv red will be hitting the shelves too. The name comes from the area in North Bali where the wine is being made. They have been holding a number of launch nights recently around town introducing the wine to seasoned wine connoisseurs and newbies alike. The Beat attended one of these events at Cocoon last Friday. It was a big turn out of the local party elite and all had an opinion in regard to the new product. We were swinging towards the Chadonnay to begin, but then found ourselves swaying back to the Sauv Blanc, but wait, the Rose was going down rather well too. Okay, so we liked them all. In the end, it was a rather inebriating affair which goes to show that Plaga is indeed a fun drink. They are surely onto a good thing and for the punters the price is right, retailing around130k. CD REVIEW
David Bowie
The Next Day On January 8 this year something extraordinary happened. At around 7am GMT the Twittersphere went berserk with the news that a full decade since his last release, 2003’s Reality, David Bowie had popped up out of nowhere with a brand new single.

Apparently Bowie’s idea, “Where are We Now?” was simply dropped on iTunes for fans to discover, with no warning or fanfare preceding the release. The plan worked and it wasn’t long before it got noticed. Just a few frenzied minutes later the news was trending thick and fast, with all sorts of ridiculously premature analysis of the song, which features Bowie forlornly singing about being lost on German public transport. “Bowie’s new song has made me cry!” gushed @BoyGeorge, while The Guardian’s chief music critic @ AlexisPetridis described “Where are We Now?” as “a beautiful, elegiac ballad.” Eventually, after the single was rather hastily declared “the best thing ever” by just about every music critic with a Twitter account, the rest of The Next Day (Bowie’s 24th studio album) materialized to continued praise and more than a few comparisons to his famous Berlin period – both musically and because the album’s artwork is simply a rehashing of 1977’s Heroes. You’d think after all that time there would be some slow arty lead in or bloated intro but no, there’s a whack of the drums and we’re off, straight into the bouncy clatter of title track “The Next Day” that has distinct overtones of “Suffragette City” woven into its DNA. The sleazy horns and staccato guitars of “Dirty Boys” (and later, ”Boss of Me”) echo the recent David Byrne release Love This Giant, which is certainly no bad thing, and the euphoric pop to doo-wop and back again of “Dancing in Space” is just magic. Not so magic is the frantic (yet naf ) drum’n’bass of “If You Can See Me”, or indeed the vampish Gothic organs on “Love is Lost”. There’s no question that The Next Day is killer, but it’s not without its fair share of filler, and as you’d expect from Bowie, it’s a contrary and complex work with overtones of death and notions of Bowie’s own mortality (he’s in his mid-60s and suffered a heart attack in 2004). “I’d rather be dead/or out of my head” he states on album apogee “I’d Rather be High”, but regardless, the overall impression is one of an invigorated and revitalized pop master doing what he does best. SURF
I
t was a full day of non-stop action on Sunday, April 14 in Pancer Door beach. Dian Hardiyanto won top place honors, leading him straight to the National Finals in Bali later on this year. A total of 34 surfers coming from Pacitan, Jogjakarta and Pangandaran competed in a friendly atmosphere for the coveted price of national finals. During this GromSearch series #5, harsh competition of the “Under 14” and “Under 16” divisions pushed the young surfers to give the best of themselves. Despite brown colored water caused by heavy rain in the previous days, Groms could enjoy perfect conditions during this sunny day, displaying pristine two to three-foot left hand point breaks. At lunchtime, kids participated in funny activities such as wheelbarrow races and sit down racing. Groms also helped the Rip Curl Crew in planting trees in a very friendly atmosphere and they fulfilled their commitment to environmental actions by respectfully helping in the traditional clean up of the beach. In the final of the “Under 16’s division”, Dian Hardiyanto survived a tight heat and took top honors thanks to powerful smooth turns with a total of 12.1 points. Supriyanto, Hidir Jakah and Budi realized an impressive performance all along the rounds, leading them to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place, respectively. In the “Under 14” boys division, Dede Yoga impressed judges with his sensational surfing style, confidently besting his rivals Fajar, Ibnul and Wiwid with a total of 11.4 points. Winners were all given a pack of goodies such as Rip Curl products, stickers, bags, shirts and Sticky Bumps wax. At the end of the day, all GromSearch participants enjoyed a fish grill with spicy chilli together with an acoustic live music after party. Due to a lack of swell, the original GromSearch Series#6 in Padang, Sumatra, was cancelled. The competition continues in Lakey Peak, Sumbawa on

Born in Yogyakarta, Inès was surrounded by an artistic family that made her instinctively drawn to the art world. She found her passion in illustrating and painting, and always explores different mediums to find the best way to express what she has on her mind. Her artwork describes life filled with memories, feelings, and thoughts, on canvas or murals which she affectionately calls wall art. Showing a flair for showmanship, she has had live painting shows in the past and this made her realize that art is not just about producing works in a studio, but when people see you paint, the term art can become a little more alive.
