There is so much new going on in this town nowadays, new people arriving every day and new buildings going up all over the place. The good thing about this of course is that we have new venues and restaurants to visit just about every week. I’ve been making a point of getting out and trying the new places on offer lately and some of them are really worth a go. Mostly the clubs nowadays appear to be taking on big city aspects. Closed in and air cons blasting. Places like A Club with their elevator up to the top floor and progressive sounds reminding one of a special place in Jakarta, and District with their new lights, sounds, and newly renovated space is pretty cool too. People are creatures of habit though and it is hard to get them to move from their usual haunts. There was another interesting club that I visited a while ago, but I haven’t heard much of lately, The Banjar. It’s very Jakarta style, but lacked that critical mass of people to get it going. It still surprises me when people say they have never been to Pyramid on Dewi Sri. While Mint has taken on the position of the best or the busiest house club in Petitenget, Pyramid has moved into the venue to go after Mint begins slowing down. One of the things that Pyramid has going for it is the space - it’s comfortable. Of course there are the usual suspects that have their niche and permanent crowds but the competition is always building. These new clubs that are popping up, and there are more on the way soon, are all offering good music and vibes, and are well worth a visit. It’s up to you guys to get out there and try them. You never know, you might even find something new. This week’s beat is jammed full of the info you need to get around this town and its abundance of entertainment options. If it’s the first time you’ve seen the beat magazine you have a lot of reading to do. If you’ve been on it for years, you’ll know where to go. Make sure you read the adverts too because there is just as much info there as we supply. It’s heating up and summer is on the way. The month of May is one of my favorite times on Bali. The sun’s shining, it’s still green from the wet season and the tourist numbers begin to build. Let’s hope for a good period as we move into the busy summer time.

DJ Adhe
saturday 11 May
Roots
DJ Adhe is yet another excellent DJ and producer from Jakarta, Indonesia. This gentleman whose given name is Adi Pria Devara Bachtiar has been in the DJing world for almost a decade. DJ Adhe became one of the top Indonesian DJs and has won various accolades.
Sounds
Electro, techno, trance, progressive house.
Where you might have heard him
DJ Adhe rose up to fame in April 2005 when he came out as the winner after defeating other fellow Indonesian DJs in the Heineken Thirst Indonesia which was a search for the best and most deserving DJ to represent the country in an international competition of the same name. Following up his win at the national level, he moved on to the semifinal stage held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia a month later. There he successfully sent home his competitors from other countries like DJ KoFlow from Singapore and DJ K. Switch from Japan, earning DJ Adhe a ticket to the regional final held in Thailand. In front of the Thai crowds, DJ Adhe performed as DJ Adhe Live PA with his brother Andrey Chilling (percussion/vocal) and Derry (Bunglon) (keyboard/percussion), together they defeated his main competitors from Malaysia and New Zealand. With this, DJ Adhe was all set to go to Cape Town, South Africa in January 2006 for the global final stage representing the Asia Pacific region. DJ Adhe performed in front of the 3000 punter, but unfortunately for DJ Adhe, he did not clinch the title. Ever since then, he has played alongside many internatinal DJs such as John Digweed, Gabriel & Dresden, Justin Berkovi, BK, Reece Elliot, Scott Bond, The Bravery, and DJ Garth just to name a few. He has also played at the hippest clubs in Jakarta, like Embassy, Wonderbar, and Retro. Adhe has also played at major festivals like Jakarta Movement, Cream, and Wild Child while mesmerizing his fans at clubs in Malaysia, Thailand, China and South Africa.
Why see him
DJ Adhe is indeed a role model for DJs in Indonesia especially. His achievements in bringing the Indonesian dance music scene to greater heights is no easy feat. With some of his hits which include “Take Control”, “Saturday”, “Crash Landing”, and “Daylight”, he is more than ready to rock the dance floor when he performs live at District on May 11. Don’t miss it.

Where you might have heard her
Aspiring for a bigger crowd and crazier dance floor, DJ Riri released his debut album called Keluarmalam in 2004 which was lauded by many critics for its success in bridging dance music and the live act concept. Zimmer
sunday 12 may
Roots
Zimmer is a DJ, producer and track remixer from France. He was born in a small town in the French Alps called Annecy. Since he was just a wee kid, he loved playing piano due to the instrument’s endless possibilities he says before moving to Paris to study product design and business. Zimmer has also spent time travelling and stayed in Berlin, California and Guadalajara, Mexico to search for deeper type disco melodies which he felt the Paris music scene lacked.
Sounds
Disco, nu-disco, house.
Where you might have heard them
Zimmer is an experienced DJ, but he only started making original tracks in 2010 focusing on nu-disco, making him a young and aspiring producer. His most notable single titled “Cruisin” was created in October 2010 which he sent to the Moullinex label which led to Discotexas signing him. Later in 2011, Zimmer dropped his four-track debut EP titled Horizontal Disco, which he described as a poolside-friendly melody with down tempo à la Larry Levan (100-125 bpm) disco tunes. With his originals, Zimmer came a long way, touring Europe and America, playing at clubs in the cities and parties at deserted beaches. During 2011 to 2012, Zimmer has done way more remixes than originals, some of his best remixes include Kamp!’s “Melt”, Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do”, Pompeya’s “Power”, Chic’s “Everybody Dance” and Jean Winner’s “Alive And Kicking”. Zimmer also has another side project called Vertical Disco which was made for burning up the dance floor. Aside from that, every month or so Zimmer also releases a free podcast on iTunes titled “Zimmer Tapes”.
Why see them
Expect a good blend of disco grooves and maybe some classical house melodies when the Parisian artist is in Bali playing at Woo Bar on May 12.

He later went back to the Lion City to pursue his A Level studies in Orchard School of Arts & Science. DJ Bernie has also been on and off the stage playing as an opening and closing act for many great musicians namely Frankie Knuckles, Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez, four-time Grammy Award nominee Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, Gilles Peterson, and Lee Burridge just to name a few. DJ Bernie has been involved in Heineken Green Room sessions since 2001, earning a residency at Hard Rock Cafe Bali, being an entertainment consultant for a few clubs and running a DJ agency – Current Sdn Bhd.

Johnny Concept
friday 17 May
Roots
Johnny Concept is an Australian DJ and music producer hailing from the city of Adelaide. When electro sounds started to shine and got a special place in this punter’s heart, young Johnny Concept invested in a humble pair of decks in a hope of leading a DJing life in his near future. Concept gave his best shot at spinning the decks after listening to Dragan Roganović aka Dirty South and TV Rock (an Australian dance music duo). Over the years, he has paid his dues and the crowd to which he played responded well to his sounds.
Sounds
House, electro, tech, progressive house.
Where you might have heard him
The above description was way back when he was 18, at present; Johnny Concept is a bona fide DJ and music producer. His career began booming when he first made appearances in Stereosonic festival in 2010 and 2011, then in the Planet Cream festival in 2011 and 2012. Aside from carrying and showcasing his own music around, Johnny Concept also plays lots of other melodies of local and global artists by making his voice heard as a presenter on Adelaide’s own Fresh 92.7 FM and on Soundpond.net in programs called Showcase and Upfront respectively. Other than playing at clubs and hosting his program on the radio, Johnny Concept’s second home is his studio room, where he creates his sounds ranging from house, big room beats, to electro and progressive.
Why see Him
It’s been a while since the good ol’ Bounty ship has had a major headliner. If I were you, I’d embrace this change, take off your shirt, put on a head band and chug an illusion. It all happens at Bounty Discotheque on May 17.

~The Beat Mag Interview~
1. Ok, tell us all about yourself starting from the day you were born all the way until now. I’m an Indo Borneo-American gado-gado child with a massive family lineup, rough estimation of 3050 cousins, who moved to Bali from Jakarta and fell in love with the island, and never wanted to move back. Moving here in my teens, occasionally I would miss the city and take my vacations there now and then. I started getting into the DJ scene when I was 17. I began with house music and then fell in love with DnB in 2005, and had a regular residency for a couple of years until all the underground clubs/bars disappeared. Now, it’s just a group of us who are still sticking together and doing “one off” shows. Sunset gigs are a lot of fun as well, where I am able to experiment with many different genres. So now I’m pretty much focused on DJing, and surfing of course; what can I say, island life is hard, no?
90
www.beatmag.com
2. Now imagine how your life will be until your eventual death. Tell us about it. Wow, so morbid hahaha… Well now I’m hoping to be able to produce music sometime in the future, and play some sort of musical instrument; let’s say the piano. It’s also likely I’ll be living on some other island where there is surf, in a house overlooking the break. Hopefully I won’t be living there alone, but sharing it with someone I can spill my heart to, and die old together with… something like that. 3. If you had the power to erase one DJ from all living memory, who would it be? Hohohoho… can it be more than one? This is tough, but definitely David Guetta is on the top of my list. 4. If you had the power to change one DJ into a god worshipped and emulated by all, who would that be? Justin Martin! He is my hero!

really digging all the music and sounds coming from the UK. I’ve been getting into a lot of house garage and breaks fusion. 8. What song is stuck in your head right now? Jhene Aiko ft. Casey Veggies - “In Love We Trust” 9. What else are you awesome at? I’m pretty good at making fun of myself, that’s for sure! Other than that, I occasionally do some surfing and a little bit of photography. 10. If you could be one animal, what would it be? I love being in the water, so I should say a turtle; however, I think I am going to have to choose an eagle. It just seems really cool being able to fly around so freely wherever they like, and they are just such a majestic creature. 11. Best post party food? Pizza!
5. What do you think is most lacking in the Bali scene? Consistency of nightclubs willing to have good music nowadays. Back in the day there were plenty of places that supported the underground scene. Hoping we could have a place like Home Cafe and Divine Wonderland again someday. 6. What is the best thing about being a DJ here in Bali? The freedom of wearing flip flops, singlets and a more diverse music scene than most places in Indonesia. 7. What kind of music do you see in a post dubstep world? Hopefully a lot less epileptic inducing, seizure music. Haha. Ok, answering with a straight face meow… I am
12. Your hangover cure? Pocari Sweat and UC1000 in a dark air-conditioned room in bed for 24 hours and food delivery is a must. Perhaps a plunge in the pool around midday, but that’s the only effort my motor skills can usually handle. 13. This is where you promote yourself. So my friend Paulina and I are organising, (hopefully, once a month) a Bas in Motion night at Pyramid on the May 16. It’s going to be drum n bass, bass, and non-skrillex style dubstep (yes there actually is melodic dub step out there). Shout out to Carole for collaborating on the name of the event with us, so watch out for the ad in this Beat Mag issue. You can also follow me easily on my Facebook which is ‘Mistral Page,’ or my website atjminetiara.wix.com/mistral. On the site you can listen to some of my mixes, see my list of gigs, and plenty of other cool things I post there. Thanks for the love Bali peeps and hope to see you either on the dance floor, art cafe or at one of my sunset shows. www.beatmag.com

Ubud, the informal Indonesian art capital, already has two major international events and in a few months the Ubud Village Jazz Festival shall knock that tally up to three. Last time I was in the hills, a couple of whispering spirits insisted the duo behind the newest event, Yuri Mahatma, the Bali jazz veteran responsible for the Underground Jazz Movement, and Anom Darsana, Bali’s sound engineering guru turned die-hard event organiser, were up to something. It turns out that this ain’t gonna be one of those same old Jazz festivals. In fact, it’s goodbyemetropolitan-hello-Ubud hill tribe perfection... and all that kind of jazz.
What inspired you to organise such a massive event? Why jazz? Why Ubud? Yuri Mahatma: Despite the fact that I’m a
jazz musician, I have learned that jazz represents freedom, something that any artist must possess. It also represents, in a wider sense, democracy. In jazz music, you have to listen and appreciate other musicians’ styles and, within this, play with whom you play, even if you don’t agree with their particular style. I think this is what jazz is all about. It’s timeless and as long as there is a need for self expression, you will hear people play it. I personally think that people, especially Indonesia’s younger generations, should learn how to appreciate art. Not only jazz, but art in general, there are many art forms out there which are not meant to be used for entertaining and party, but fine arts that will feed their hearts and minds.
Anom Darsana: Why Ubud? I’m surprised you
ask! Some people say that Ubud is the Indonesian capital of art and that’s a major factor in why we’re doing this jazz fest there. Besides, Ubud is also representative of the uniqueness of Bali. That’s why we’re quite confident of harmonising this
92
www.beatmag.com
unique jazz fest with our local Balinese wisdom, and not just creating a copy and paste of the beenthere-done-that metropolitan kind of festival.
This is the second year of the festival, right? Is your optimism built on having received a positive response last year… AD: Actually this is gonna be our first festival involving well known international and national jazz artists. You’re right, we did hold an event last year but, last year was meant to “test the water” within the community, even though we used the same name, Ubud Village Jazz Festival. Now we have a good support base for UVJF2013 from within the various communities who were involved last year, especially from the founders of Ubud’s two established festivals, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF) and BaliSpirit Festival (BSF). They have given us a lot of advice. YM: As a newly born festival in Ubud we are here as a complement to what already exists. Above all, as part of the community, we are more than happy if we can build a stronger relationship with these other festivals so that we can also help each other. It is obvious that we are different in content with UWRF, and we do not expect our audiences to dance and party like in BSF’s night event. UVJF is designed to be sophisticated jazz experience, one in which I believe not so many people attend in order to dance and party. Our audience wants to sit back, relax, and enjoy some incredible performances within a perfect setting.
What makes your jazz festival special, different than all the rest of the jazz events? Will there be any musicians performing their own original stuff or
FEATURES are we going to be served up just the same old generic covers by incredible jazz musicians who seem to only want to be singing other people’s songs? AD: Well, it is special! In order to suss out if a festival is going to be ordinary or exceptional, the best indicator is to check out the performers; the bands, the singers, and the artists who’ll play. Just look at our line up! Not only do we have a selection of Indonesia’s finest jazz musicians, people such as Dwiki Dharmawan (acclaimed as the Indonesian Jazz Ambassador), Simak Dialog, Koko Harsoe, and Ito Kurdhi, we also have some great jazz musicians from Europe: the famous Peter Beets Trio (Holland), Uwe Plath band and Dian Pratiwi (German-based Indonesian jazz singer), and Steve Thornton. YM: In jazz, we avoid the word “must”. We trust the artists to explore their music and because of this, everything in jazz is original, even if they play covers/standard songs. I’ll explain this a little further... Let’s say that the average length of a song is approximately three minutes. If a jazz musician gets their teeth into this song, explores the potential of the tune, the song can be extended to 10 minutes—meaning that eight of these minutes are improvisation, a whole new arrangement, involving great length of creativity and, for me, this represents originality. It doesn’t matter what song they choose to play, cover or not, we can hear something new. I salute you guys for working so hard to make this event come to life. I know it must be super tough to find sponsors, people who believe in you. Any support from the government? YM & AD: Sponsorship... yes, it is definitely hard, it’s always been the biggest obstacle to event organising. But, as a community based festival, the spirit is more about working together, making the collective dream come true by supporting each other. So yes, our main strength is on our capability to reduce the costs. Besides, it’s a community based festival and, hopefully, support from the community will pretty much ensure a sustainable existence. However, we do still get help from outside and it helps that we are also endorsed by Gianyar regency government, Bali Tourism Board, and the Indonesian Hotel & Restaurant Association (PHRI). If you’ve got yourself a jazz soul, go to Ubud Village Jazz Festival on August 9 and 10. www.beatmag.com

The mansions on Long Island had been famous for their parties in the past, The Great Gatsby is an all-star film that brings up the American great novel to the big screen once again. While Halloween is still months away, horror enthusiasts ought not to miss the loose continuation of the Evil Dead franchise and see Jennifer’s shine, try not to scream in her new horror movie. Want to know in greater detail? See for yourself at www.21cineplex.com or grab the DVD!
The Great Gatsby Romance, Drama. Director: Baz Luhrmann. Writer: Baz Luhrmann (screenplay), Craig Pearce (screenplay), F. Scott Fitzgerald (novel). Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Amitabh Bachchan, Elizabeth Debicki.
In 1922, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is a Midwesterner who rents a small house on Long Island and works as a bond salesman. Being puzzled by his party animal/millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Nick quickly finds himself getting lured by the lavish life of the great Gatsby after getting an invitation to one of his mansion parties. However, Nick eventually works out how Gatsby unscrupulously amassed his wealth by bootlegging business’s and other criminal activities. This take on the prohibition era novel plays a lot like the Bali lifestyle, just way more flapper.
Evil Dead Horror. Director: Fede Alvarez. Writer: Fede Alvarez (screenplay), Rodo Sayagues (screenplay), Sam Raimi (motion picture “The Evil Dead”). Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth
Sam Raimi’s original classic horror movie get a way grittier reboot. Forget the campy humor of Raimi’s original Evil Dead (1981) starring Bruce Campbell. The story revolves around Mia (Jane Levy) who goes into the woods with her four friends. They open the Book of the Dead and risk being consumed by the evil after being warned not to. Expect a lot of gruesome deaths and a whole lot of gore in this take on a cult classic.
House at the End of the Street Horror, Thriller. Director: Mark Tonderai. Writer: David Loucka (screenplay), Jonathan Mostow (story). Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Max Thieriot, Gil Bellows, Elisabeth Shue.
Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) is moving into a house in a suburb with her just-divorced mother, Sarah (Elisabeth Shue). Unbeknownst to them, there is a shy boy living next door who hides something or somebody in his basement. To her mother’s chagrin, Elissa falls for Ryan (Max Thieriot), the loner, which kick-starts all the creepiness in the movie. Jennifer’s and Elisabeth’s appearance here is a big bonus for horror film lovers, their mother-daughter relationship seems so real, you really feel the tension when things start to get sticky.

t’s taken a little while for Seminyak Square to grow into itself. Beyond a few stops and starts, businesses that set up and then went nowhere, and new ones that replaced them, it finally has the feeling that it was meant to have all along, a shopping square that fuels the community around it. From Bali Bakery at the front to Casa Gourmet in the back and a market that runs right down the middle, the atmosphere is lively and the folks are made up of locals, tourists and residents alike. A little café tucked away down the back seems to have captured something unique in the square; authentic local food at local prices. For around 30k, Café Braga will feed you a full meal full of authentic flavours. The atmosphere is clean and decorated with old black and white photographs. With indoor and outdoor tables, the feel is a perfect juxtaposition to the flashier international cafes. According to the charming manager, a lot of tourists choose Café Braga for the chance to try authentic dishes. Served with lots of sides, including fiery sambals, dishes like nasi goreng and soup buntut appeal to those who want to sit comfortably and eat simply, sampling local food in a safe, clean environment. international food and hosts the breakfast for the hotel upstairs, while Braga is open for lunch and dinner serving Indonesian favourites. The Nasi Goreng Surprise, a higher priced item at 32k was indeed a surprise and is a perfect example of the Balinese penchant for creativity. On a bed of fried rice with egg, a variety of ingredients enhances the basic nasi found in local warungs. Ingredients like sausage and bakso meatballs have found their friends in fried shallots, garlic, chili and vegetables. The dish is surprising as it is original but the flavours win you over. Sup Buntut, or oxtail soup at Café Braga comes with a full array of condiments, including krupuk, rice, sauces and sambals. The slow cooked oxtail floats in a fragrant broth and condiments and seasoning can be added to it. Café Braga offers something different in the Square. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Mosquito
Having started out as the kind of art-punk side project that usually fizzles out shortly after graduation, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are now into their 13th year and showing no signs of throwing in the towel just yet, managing to stay true to their New York hipster roots, whilst continuing to experiment with a number of different influences like an ADHD kid flicking through the music channels on TV.
Worthless
Wonderful
Worm Fodder
Wow Worthy
Coming out all guns blazing, “Sacrilege” is on par with “Zero” and “Rich” as far as exhilarating YYYs openers go, followed closely by the deeply atmospheric “Subway”, where O’s fragile vocals and Zinner’s quavering guitar play out to the sound of carriages eerily clanking through the underworld of Manhattan. Tribal bongos and distorted guitars sustain title track “Mosquito” to screeches of “mosquito live, mosquito die” and “I will suck your blood” from O with near schizophrenic delivery.

Gleefully romping through gospel, rap, electronica, calypso, and their default DIY garage rock, fourth LP Mosquito finds the achingly cool New York trio of Karen O, Nick Zinner and Bryan Chase continuing the migration away from the straight up punk of early material, that began on sophomore album Show Your Bones, and was refined on 2008’s It’s Blitz.
www.beatmag.com
As with other YYYs albums, Zinner manages to coax all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds out of his guitar, while O continues to be one of the most exciting frontwomen, wait scratch that, frontpeople of the last decade. “Down, down under the earth goes another lover…” she casually coos to the spacy dub and plodding drums of “Under the Earth”, with all the indifference of someone who regularly bumps off exes just as easily as polishing her nails. Six tracks in and the directionless keyboard dirge of “These Paths” is the first of a couple misfires that ever so slightly take the shine off the album, but hey at least they’re having a go at something different. “Always” is a similarly flat number that appears to have been written using the ‘calypso’ demo present on a casio, and the guest vocals of hip hop legend of Kool Keith (aka Dr. Oktagon) on “Buried Alive” just don’t quite add up. Luckily, “Despair” picks up where “Cheated Hearts” left off on SYB, and the gorgeous closer “Wedding Song” is a valiant effort to revisit Fever To Tell masterpiece “Maps”. And then there’s that album artwork. Exploring new levels of tastelessness, it’s certain to appall and endear in equal measures across their fanbase, and is about as easy on the eye as, well, as a giant purple mosquito attacking Chuckie’s younger brother, but don’t let that fool you, there is much to applaud here from these New York hellraisers. Never has the phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ been more apt. Dan Ashcroft

The Pinchless Electrolysis Hair Remover This is the home electrolysis wand with a smoothrolling ball tip that removes hair without the painful pinching typically experienced with needle electrolysis. Within 60 days of regular 1 to 11minute treatments (depending on the area), users will see a noticeable decrease in unwanted hair on the face, underarms, legs, or bikini line. An LED on the wand lights up when the roller tip contacts the skin correctly to ensure the most effective treatment. The system includes six reusable conductive gel pads that connect to the wand to treat larger areas on the face, body, and legs. www.hammacher.com $79.95

very painter has their own ways to create masterpieces, including how they will share the story in each piece. Awan Yozeffani is an Indonesian artist who tries to share the same experiences he had through his artworks.
Born in 1982, Yozeffani has loved doodling, drawing, and painting ever since he could remember, and decided to seriously pursue art at Indonesian Institute of Art Yogyakarta in 2004. Unsatisfied with the art knowledge he got before, he moved to Bali in 2007 and continued to study art at the Denpasar Institute of Art. For him, art is his symbolic diary. He just visualizes what he feels resulting in his works being very personal yet shared. During 2006 up until now, he has been active in exhibiting his works, either in Yogyakarta, Jakarta, or Bali. His latest exhibition called “When I Dream was held at Bledog Art Space where he collaborated with his fellow artist, Woro Indah Lestari. Currently, you can see his artworks at Sika Gallery, Jl.
