I couldn’t believe the sign I saw pop up on the side of the road near our office and more importantly near where I live the other day. It said that the roads department is actually going to fix Jalan Pangkung Sari, Petitenget/Oberoi. For anyone not familiar with the location, it’s the road that connects the German BBQ and Villa Lumbung, or you could call it ‘the messed up road growing back to the jungle behind Ultimo’ and has been the bane of my life for the past 10 years. That particular road has been developing fast over the recent past with fancy villas being built as quick as you can say, “Eureka! I’m a mega loaded luxury villa owner,” with the continual degradation of the thoroughfare making it almost impossible to pass. The word on the street was that that the road wasn’t even owned by the government and was in fact a private road (we’re not sure how that could have been) and that the authorities were washing their hands of it at least until the whole area was replete with luxury villas. This is all pretty crazy since the illustrious extension of the Canggu Sunset Road was supposed to have been built thru that area too and all we ended up with was another small starred hotel being built where the Sunset Road should have been starting. However, we can be thankful for small mercies and trust that the new road will make the lives of people living in the area a little more pleasurable once the project is completed. Or is it just going to bring more traffic into the area? Meanwhile, we can all be thankful too that the Simpang Siur underpass has been partly opened and now getting to the airport is way easier. Step by step we are watching the traffic and infrastructural improvements now unfolding before our eyes and just think, soon we’ll even be able to drive on the new toll road. Now, won’t that be small pleasure? Check inside the Mainstage and What’s On sections for all the entertainment goodies coming your way in the next two weeks. Have fun!

SCOOP A Night on Broadway Bali Rainbow community is back fund raising and entertaining again. The group that has been supporting local causes of the alternative lifestyle community and HIV/AIDS prevention are back at SOS Anantara Seminyak with a bigger show than ever. The gala night will include dinner, drinks, fabulous dancers and a show from one of Australia’s great entertainers Micheal Cormick. Cormick has been the leading man on many Broadway musicals including Phantom of the Opera, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and many more. It’s a big night for the alternative lifestyle scene here in Bali and funds raised will go a long way in helping the underprivileged on the island. Bali Rainbow Community works closely with Yayasan Gaya Dewata and Bali Peduli, and this year they hope to raise more funds than ever with the entrance tickets, auctions and raffles during the night. Get your tickets for the June 1 event from Sinta Maroe +628123947142

Rock Against Taboo According to the Safe Childhoods foundation “children aged between five and nine years old from Indonesia are being sold for $5000” and “Indonesia is trailing behind Thailand and Cambodia by 15 years with regards to government policy and on ground action preventing crimes against children”. To help raise awareness and funds for the organization, the group is holding two events at Cocoon. First a Kids for Kids Day with fun and games for the kids on June 8 from 12-6pm. Then in September, eight hours of live music will feature at Rock Against Taboo music festival. All proceeds from both events will go to helping the Safe Childhoods foundation and awareness against child abuse and child trafficking in Indonesia. www.safechildhoods.org

SCOOP Global beauties are on the way Some 130 participants from all over the world will attend the Miss World competition in Bali on September 4-15. Participants will stay at Hotel Westin in the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) complex, Nusa Dua, Badung regency, while the pageant itself will be held at Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), Pecatu, off the road that leads to Uluwatu. Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Miss World 2013, Jeby Philippi, hopes that the people of Bali will take part in the success of this prestigious event. Regent Gde Agung welcomed and supported international tourism events in the region. He also said he hoped the committee would ensure adequate security would be on hand to avoid any problems that might lead to disruption of the APEC summit’s agenda in early October 2013 in Nusa Dua. The Regent wanted Balinese cultural performances to be included, with the Jepun flower, as Badung regency mascot, to welcome the participants of Miss World 2013.
IPL & AFT Skin Rejuvenation Deal Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) skin rejuvenation uses multiple wavelengths of light to treat many different types of pigmented irregularities such as blotchy skin colour, freckles, pigmented dark spots, sun spots and age spots as well as reverse the aging process by reducing fine lines, decrease pore size, remove facial veins and correct Rosacea. AFT (Advanced Fluorescence Technology) is the next generation of IPL. Like IPL, it also treats superficial skin pigment and broken capillaries. AFT rejuvenation improves dull complexions, uneven skin pigmentation, large pores, as well as red flushing skin due to Rosacea. What else do these things have in common? They’re 20 percent off for the month of June at ARC.
Woovies If you’re into short films exploring fashion, you’re in luck. The W is screening such movies at their Tea Garden on Wednesday, June 12 from 7.30pm onwards. Fashion films seem to draw together a host of creative types including fashionistas, musicians, and filmmakers. The short films will will be curated by The Smalls and range from the traditional to the conceptual and experimental. W Film club will be held every second Wednesday of the month. It will cost you 160k for a seat at the screening. For RSVP, please send your details to b&f.wbali@whotels. com If you would like to participate and submit a film, go to www.thesmalls.com/pitch-room.

Chocolate Puma
saturday May 25
Roots
Chocolate Puma comprises of René ter Horst (DJ Zki) and Gaston Steenkist (Dobre). The duo hail from Haarlem, the Netherlands use their monikers to release their house music, alongside their other aliases such as The Goodmen, Zki & Dobre, Jack Prongo, and Riva.
Sounds
House, techno, breakbeat
Where you might have heard THEM
The duo’s stint in the EDM scene started out of their interest in the dance music scene and the acid house movement in the 90s. At that time, they were more commonly known as The Goodmen with their release of “Give It Up” under their own Fresh Fruit label in 1992. This track was well-received beyond anyone’s expectation, including theirs. The hit went on to be played from club to club after making its way up to the top (#1) on the US Dance Chart as soon as it was released. Due to popular demand, René and Gaston aka Chocolate Puma reproduced the track and dropped it a year later and it was another massive release having placed at #5 in the UK Singles Chart. Their other alias, Jack Prongo saw them dropping their next track titled “Moving Thru Your System” on a lot of playlists. By this time, the Dutch duo had received recognition from their German and overseas counterparts and garnered a legion of fans worldwide. As Chocolate Puma, it was a smooth breakthrough after having been widely recognized through their other names. They released their debut single “I Wanna Be U” which was aimed at the underground scene but appeared on the British Top of the Pops TV program. All in all, Chocolate Puma has produced many big hits including Beatport #1 “Tonco Tone”, remixed many tracks under their Riva guise, re-launched their own music label (Pssst Music) and accomplished many projects with their record label, Defected, such as the In The House mix compilation.
Why see THEm
These guys have been in the scene before there even was a scene. So hipster. Go down to Woo Bar on May 25 to see the Amsterdam boys perform.

R3hab
friday may 31
Roots
If you love the Dutch house, the name R3hab should come as nothing new for you. R3hab is the stage name for a Dutch DJ, music producer and remixer of Moroccan origin – Fadil El Ghoul. Ghoul was born in April 2, 1986, and is regarded to be one of the originators of Dutch house. He started his musical journey by mixing various sounds at home from his vinyl and CD collections soon after finishing his marketing studies at university.
Sounds
Electronica, techno, house.
Where you might have heard him
So far, apart from remixing works like Chuckie’s “Toys Are Nuts”, R3hab has also done remixes for Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Calvin Harris feat. Example’s “We’ll Be Coming Back”, Lil’ Wayne, Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Sean Paul, Dada Life, Snoop Dogg, LMFAO and Bob Sinclar. His prowess in EDM is not just confined to remixing alone, his original productions such as “Pump The Party” which was his first collaboration with his fellow Dutch DJ Afrojack, was frequently listed on Beatport’s charts. He soon joined Afrojack’s gang at Wall Recordings and later Spinnin’ Records. Soon, his genre-crossing and especially chain saw sounds attracted labels on which R3hab dropped his tracks, like the famous Ministry of Sound under which “Rock This Place” and “Get Get Down” were released and the latter one topped dance charts worldwide. Then “Skydrop” became an anthem of Tiësto’s Musical Freedom label early this year. R3hab has a weekly radio show on Sirius XM called ‘I NEED R3HAB’ and 2012 also saw him getting his first major award (IDMA Best Breakthrough Artist Award) at the Miami Winter Music Conference.
Why see him
His epic achievements during such a short period of time are what makes him respected amongst his peers globally. If you want to see some ‘Chainsaw Madness’ (how R3hab describes his style of music), get down to Velvet Hypnotized at Beachwalk Kuta on May 31 to see this young Dutch DJ ‘cause this guy really gets it going.

Amirali
saturday june 1
Roots
Amirali is a rising star in the DJ world who currently resides in London, UK. Apart from being a DJ, the Iranian-born Amirali is also a music producer and remixer. While living in Iran as a kid, he was taught the basics of playing the piano by his father. At 16, his whole family moved to Toronto, Canada in search of a better quality of life and education, this is where Amirali started to sneak into the clubs downtown. Later, Amirali decided to settle in London in 2010 to look for bigger EDM scenes.
Sounds
Electronica, techno, and house.
Where you might have heard him
While finishing his architectural studies in London, Amirali met Damian Lazarus, owner of the Crosstown Rebels imprint after sending his tracks to numerous music labels. That initial meeting turned out to be a life-changing moment. After a year and a half, Amirali released the much-anticipated In Time which featured 13 tracks and one of them was “My Way” which was a huge hit and was included in Damian’s Get Lost Vol. 4 compilation. 2012 saw the full-fledged member of the Crosstown gang dropping his debut EP titled “Beautiful World” on the same label in January. Many of his tracks were also later remixed by MK, Deetron, Appleblim, Deniz Kurtel. His fans couldn’t get enough of him, in April this year, Amirali released his sophomore EP along with his newly evolved sound of moody and spooky disco and vocals, called “Melancholia” which featured a few mixes by Swiss veteran sound wizard, Deetron. This was after he was previously honored to play live for one hour on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix in February this year. Besides producing tracks and remixing others’ works, he has also performed at Panorama Bar and Watergate (Berlin), Fabric and Lovebox (London), Footwork (Toronto), and Stereo (Montreal).
Why see him
Mint seems to be the place for dark beats and Amirali should take you on a very serious musical journey. So, mark the date, Amirali will be performing at Mint on June 1.

Alex M.O.R.P.H
saturday june 1
Roots:
Alex M.O.R.P.H. was once known as Alexander Mieling, but that was a different life. The German DJ got his stage name from a song “Amorphous” and to represent the changing of his appearance and music over time. The periods after each letter are purely for aesthetic reasons. He used to work on projects such as MORPH , Arc in the Sky , Ohm Boys and Scirocco but now uses the Alex M.O.R.P.H. exclusively.
Sounds:
Melodic trance, tech
Where You Might Have Heard Him:
Alex M.O.R.P.H. is a German dance heavyweight that has collaborated on many successful albums over the years. In 2003, the Fenology label was founded which focused purely on trance music and Alex released his most successful singles with them which included “Flaming Clouds”, “Unification” and “New Harvest”. He’s made hundreds of remixes for artists such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Paul van Dyk and Faithless. He also teamed up with Rank 1 to produce “Life Less Ordinary” in 2007 which was had huge success. Later he joined the Armada trance stable which landed him a compilation with that label and his first track on the A State of Trance album in 2009. Alex’s “Waking the Stars” being picked up by Armin van Buuren for his latest A State of Trance album and Dash Berlin’s United Destinations 2012 album didn’t hurt his CV at all. With two artist albums under his belt, “Purple Audio” and the recently released “Prime Mover”, the M.O.R.P.H. sound has become a vast part of electronic dance music.
Why See Him:
If you’re a big trance fan, this is one DJ you’ll surely want to see. Alex’s melodic brand of trance has been described as impulsive and energetic. He teams up with his old producing buddy, Woody van Eyden and many other DJs to form this week’s big event, Heaven’s Gate at Pandawa Beach in Jimbaran, or better said south coast Desa Kutuh, and also known as Secret Beach in Ungasan. You can’t miss this one all you beautiful ravers, it’s gonna be on the beach and huge.

Peter P
sunday june 2
Roots
DJ Peter P first got into music at the age of seven, coming from a musical family (his dad being a jazz singer and his brother a keyboard player) music was always around his home. By the time he was 15 he was behind the decks at a local London club spinning rare northern soul and soon picked up the skills to be the worldwide DJ that he is today. In the late eighties he progressed through the ranks and started playing many an all nighter. The nineties saw a change in music and Peter P ingratiated himself in the house scene, playing up and down the country at plethora of rave. Peter P started playing soulful garage, latin house, funky house; he chose to mix all genres of house taking crowds on an exciting rollercoaster of musical mayhem.
Sounds
House, soul and boogie
Where you might have heard them
Peter P was also involved in the famous Summer of Love revival nights where four events saw more than 20,000 people rave hard. His skills behind the decks have seen him hold down a residency at London’s The Penthouse for three years where he has been a key figure in the club’s success. Peter says he loves the challenge of playing to such a diverse crowd every week and drawing on his skills and experience to ensure the party is banging. 2011 has seen Peter P pick up 2 awards at the Soul Survivors Awards where he was voted as runner up in the best club DJ and best radio presenter category. He has also been nominated for best club night and best promoter at the Cool Magazine Awards.
Why see them
You can be sure of one thing with Peter P, behind the decks the party will really get started. Catch him live at Cocoon on the June 2, you wont want to miss it!

WEDNESDAY june 5
Roots
Vierratale is a four-piece band from Jakarta which was founded as Vierra in November 2008, before finally officially adding the suffix ‘tale’ to its name in February this year. The band is made up of four talented artists (one lady and three gentlemen), as the band name suggests – vier means four in German. The four members of Vierratale are Kevin Aprilio (pianist/keyboardist), Widy (vocalist), Raka (guitarist), and Tryan (drummer). Aprilio initiated an idea of creating a band with Tryan with Raka (former guitarist of Killing Me Inside) and Widy joining the gang later on.
Sounds
Power pop, pop rock.
Where you might have heard them
About three months after being established, Vierratale released their debut album entitled My First Love featuring many hits revolving around puppy love. Many tracks in this album such as “Dengarkan Curhatku”, “Bersamamu”, “Perih”, “Rasa Ini”, “Jadi Yang Kuinginkan”, and “Seandainya” went on to become the first of many hits on national music charts and heard on television and radio shows. The album received a massive amount of positive reviews and the number of sales sky rocketed (multiplatinum style). There were around 9 million people subscribed to their Ring Back Tone (RBT). After having such a great musical year and garnering lots of teenage fans, Vierratale was honored at the 2010 Dahsyatnya Award to be the Best New Upcoming Artist of the Year. 2011 saw them shining even more with their second album Love, Love and Love getting launched in February which included singles like “Takut”, “Terlalu Lama” and “Kesepian”, which talked about the gloomy times in a relationship. Similar as their previous album, Vierratale came up with 12 special Valentine tracks and shot their video clips in a Disney theme to engage teeny boppers out there. Now, they have moved out of their former label, Musica Studios and joined Kevin’s Aprilio Kingdom management. With their new name, they have dropped a new single called “Cinta Butuh Waktu” and are preparing for their upcoming album late this year.
Why see them
Good-looking faces and a knack for music might make a very good musician or band. However, a recipe to make Vierratale thriving in today’s Indonesian music industry appealing to the prepubescent sector. Treat yourself (or your preteen daughter) with some youthful lyrics and melodies by heading down to Akasaka Music Club on June 5 to see Vierratale live.

S
tarting with a smooth and sensible romance with Jazz, this girl grabbed punk rock with just the kind of rough and in-your-face approach that punk rock requires. Born and raised in Bali, she’s Brianna and she’s young, talented and loud. Look out Indonesia, cause this girl’s got the attention of the big city kids now. How did you get into singing? I’m pretty sure I came out of my mother’s womb singing but maybe this is because I was a C-section baby and it was just for mental clarity. You know what, maybe singing was inevitable, in Batak genetics you’re just born with an ability to vocalise… loudly! Either way, I began classical vocal training at the age of 12. I never really thought I was any good but my vocal teacher seemed to like to put me in the special chair as an example to the other students. This was the first time that had ever felt that I was actually doing something right! So I got hooked (I mean, who wouldn’t want to be made an example of in a positive light, right?). Anyway, that point forward became my history in the making.
86
www.beatmag.com
Back then you were performing jazz tunes rather than punk rock and yet these days people know you as a rock singer. How did this change come about? Yeah! Bizarre, right? Jazzy tunes were second nature, but I always had this little gremlin inside of me who loved to listen to all the devilish bad boy bands like Limp Bizkit, No Doubt, Sublime and even System of a Down. I grew up listening to my father perform old classic Latin and Jazz tunes, like from the Real Book, therefore these styles were what I knew. I felt comfortable and confident singing them, they’re way more easy going on the vocal chords. Then came my high school days in a Sydney performing arts boarding school, The McDonald College. My world opened up to Jeff Buckley, RHCP, and Nirvana. I felt so connected to those sounds and their song lyrics but I was in serious denial because I was known as the soulful jazzy ballad singer, who was clearly slanted towards the hip-hop scene, so I kept quiet about it until one day an angel by the name of Liz Oprandi came along and asked me to sing a song with her

husband Leo Sinatra. She’d written this song called “Hope” for Leo’s band Suicidal Sinatra. Thanks to those cool cats I began my rockabilly/punk rock romance. Oh, just so you know, the first rockabilly band I was obsessed with was The Hillbilly Moon Explosion. What else do you do, other than singing? My mother and I have a business creating apps for small businesses so, if I’m not writings songs, recording or touring, I’m in my studio creating apps like the little geek that I actually am. Besides that, I love scuba diving. If I could, I would much prefer to live in the ocean, but not in the “sleep with the fishes” sense. What’s your plan for the future? Solo album? Continuing to tour with the punk rock boys? Besides my contracted three albums with Catz Records Indonesia and some more fabulously wild and wonderful touring adventures with the boys from Superman is Dead who, may I add, I am very grateful towards, my future plan is to try and keep
as much honesty in my art as I possibly can. Despite being part of the industry, rather than a part of a movement/campaign against the crowd, I don’t believe there is such a thing as indie anymore so, I think, the tactical move to make is to become part of the system. I mean part of the system first, then break it down from within enemy lines. Kind of like I’m a supa spy ninja! Any last nagging words? Yeah, I’d like to end on a sad note cause my heart strings play minor and diminished chords. I recently became aware of a really horrifying and beyond disturbing fact about what is happening to our children throughout Indonesia. Did you know we are actually right behind Thailand in the sex slave and human trafficking industry? Bet you didn’t know that. I’d like to think that as a human being, you’ll have the decency and humanity to acknowledge this frightening fact and not turn a blind eye toward it. Face it and most importantly fight it with an almighty force. Visit www.safechildhoods.org and let’s do something to change these stats.

has always offered us a wide variety of ways to live and that is why the early expats came. Reinventing yourself in the early days was almost de rigeur; the plumber becomes a shoe designer, the door to door knife salesman becomes a magazine editor, the high school drop out becomes a fine art dealer. Things have changed here of course and the stakes are higher, the rewards are greater and there is more to lose. However, some of those who have reinvented themselves have gone on to give back to the community in all kinds of ways. You don’t have to be qualified to see an opportunity to share what you have, whether it be skills, profits or simply time. Then there is the flip side. Those who see the success of others as an opportunity to reap

personal rewards for themselves. Recently we have been hearing a lot more about robberies and assaults, many directed at foreign women, who are sometimes seen as soft targets, but also at men, local women and families. This isn’t new and it isn’t exclusive to Bali but it does hold an interesting dynamic. As the island becomes more affluent, the gap between the haves and have-nots has become wider, and people stay true to form; there are those who want to share and those who want to take, and that unfortunately is life. Morals are very personal and there are those who feel part of the communities they live in and want to make it better in whichever way they can, then there are those who are looking out for number one and see no profit in caring.

Not surprisingly, the Indonesians and Balinese are among those most active, we look to people like Asana Viebeke of I’m An Angel charity, Walhi who fights for the environment, younger members like the band Superman is Dead who lobby for better protections in Kuta, the lists are endless. There are long time residents of Bali who have expressed concern over their safety for the first time recently. Security gets amped up, for whatever difference that will make. People are locking their doors and securing their children’s rooms, but at the root of the problem is a police force that is underpaid and stretched beyond its limits and society that marginalizes the poor and glitzy lifestyles that attracts common thieves.
destination that is peaceful and safe. Personally we can all take a look around our communities, get involved and connect. This is the best protection of all. Sure lock up your valuables and protect your children and yourselves but also know your neighbours. See where poverty and lack of opportunity and education can be the breeding ground for resentment and possibly crime. Ask yourself, are you a giver or a taker and what kind of message does that send? Black or white, Indonesian or not, we are global citizens and have to take some responsibility for our role in our homes, neighborhoods, businesses, our communities and the world at large. Star Trek Into Darkness Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi. Director: J. J. Abrams. Writer: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof, Gene Roddenberry (TV series). Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Bruce Greenwood.
Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise are at it again and fanboys of this series reboot have much to look forward to. J. J. Abrams is back at the helm along with the entire cast of the last film and by the looks of the previews, so is the lens flare. Benedict Cumberbatch will play a villain that comes within the ranks of Starfleet and threatens Earth leaving the crew of the Enterprise battling on earth and warping to distant planets to try to stop him. This sequel seems like a rollercoaster ride through the cosmos and touches off on the very contemporary issue of terrorism.
Fast & Furious 6 Action, Crime, Thriller. Director: Justin Lin. Writer: Chris Morgan (screenplay), Gary Scott Thompson (characters). Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang, Ludacris, Luke Evans, Gina Carano.
DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is now forced to make a deal with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and the rest of his crew of renegade car enthusiasts. Hobbs offers them all full pardons if they help him bring down Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), a leader of a notorious international heist gang. Dom agrees to get behind the wheel once more, but revelations involving Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) make things tricky. If you’re into cars and have followed this series, well, this just might be what you’re looking for. If you aren’t any of those things, well, I’d skip this one. On the other hand, The Rock and Vin Diesel teaming up might just float your boat...
Snitch Crime, Drama, Thriller. Director: Ric Roman Waugh. Writer: Justin Haythe, Ric Roman Waugh. Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Barry Pepper, Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Bratt, Jon Bernthal, Michael Kenneth Williams.
A desperate father, John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson) volunteers to help the Drug Enforcement Administration to investigate a drug cartel in order to get his son out of jail. He calls on his former employee and ex-con Daniel (Jon Bernthal) to get him closer the drug ring. Dwayne Johnson plays your everyman turn hero in this movie which is sort of a departure from his former roles. With an ensemble cast, hopefully this film will be a little more entertaining than almost every other Hollywood film where your law abiding citizen tackles drug cartels.

lippery Stone on Jalan Batu Belig opened to great fanfare and maintains its elegance. Its casual approach to drinking and dining, and the food remains delicious, reasonably priced and accessible across the board. The chef behind the stove is now a swarthy Italian who made the move from Beijing to take over. The original menu also hasn’t changed, which is good news for those who loved it in the first place. One of their biggest sellers, strangely enough, is Peking duck. The ducks are lined up in the open kitchen in the various stages of preparation, and if a feast begins with the eyes, this is enough to have you salivating. The dish itself is absolutely spot on and best of all features a crisp skin that provides the perfect juxtaposition to the tender meat. Many a Chinese restaurant will serve up the duck cooked hours earlier, the skin gone rubbery, but not here. The meat is taken from the breast and the leg, carefully removed from the bone and rendered of all its fat.

With perfect little pancakes and sides of crisp cucumber sticks and shallots, sticky hoisin sauce on the side, there’s no doubting why it is their most popular dish. Beside that, the finger-like restaurant that overlooks rice fields and has a long bar with a water feature running down the centre, is light and breezy, with the music at just the right level to allow conversation, an open kitchen fitted out by a chef and a cocktail menu that has some real surprises. Good ones. The menu plays both Western and Asian tunes and has a range of hand-formed pizzas with toppings that are both traditional and mod-Asian.The restaurant was set up to feature grilled meats and this is still an excellent place to have a steak; choose your grade and size, your sauce and sides to suit. Clever concept and it works. There are also small plates, which include a fresh and lively tuna sashimi, served in crisp sesame coated cones and topped with a dreamy avocado ice cream, and the perfect Peking Duck is offered in small or large, the

perfect accompaniment to some of the spicy cocktails, including the flaming mandarin which packs a punch with a good shot of fiery Cointreau poured into the glass at the table. Garnished with a tiny green chili, it has spicy overtones that really hit the spot. Best of all, the menu offers two for just 99k, designed to share. Dessert is where the chef gets to show his true colours with a picture perfect tiramisu, served in s shot glass with a smear of coffee flavoured chocolate and a coffee mascarpone cream on the side, the perfect balance of cake, custard and robust flavor. Nice one. Slippery Stone is big; it seats 180 people but also has ample space for private parties and big groups. Manager Yannick says, “ We’re not trying to be the most exclusive restaurant in town. We are offering reasonably priced food and wine in a casual setting. Because of the size of the restaurant people can drop in and we can accommodate large and small groups
and private diners. The concept of the restaurant is to cater to what our guests want.” The quality of the food and the experience at Slippery Stone is refreshingly different and ultimately appealing. “We aren’t concerned with dress codes, reservations or pretension, guests can come for a few drinks, a casual bite to eat, a romantic dinner or a special occasion, we’re part of the community and that’s how we always planned it,” explains Yannick. Slippery Stone has all its ducks in a row and a professional team delivering something refreshingly welcoming in a growing part of town. [Sarah Dee] Slippery Stone Jl. It’s lucky record stores aren’t around any more, as trying to shove Alt-J’s Mercury-winning debut An Awesome Wave onto the right shelf would have even the most meticulous of spotty teenage shop assistants scratching their heads. Is it pop? Rock? Electro? Gregorian chant? Folk? Trip-hop? Grime? Indie? Celtic? Try all of the above and then some, but that still doesn’t quite nail it. Fitting really for a band that officially spells its name ‘∆’ (clue: press the alt and j keys on your computer). Some might stick with dubstep, that oh-so de rigueur genre that seems to be infiltrating everything these days, but that only works for about 20% of the album so that’s not right, and it’s too indie to be rock but too poppy to be indie. Folk-step maybe? Whatever you want to call it, I’d say it’s pretty safe to assume John Peel would approve of the Leeds quartet, who met in a Cambridge basement in 2007 and went on to accidentally create this anti-genre masterpiece. Beautifully paced, the album swings gracefully from all out swagger (“Intro”, “Fitzpleasure”) to introspective smoky guitars (“Interlude I & II”), and “Bloodflood” nicely pushes a few nostalgic buttons – listen for the primary school assembly doing the morning greeting in the opening few bars, something I haven’t heard since I was six; not exactly something you expect to find on a Mercury winning LP. The euphoric fanfare of “Dissolve Me” is something that Wayne Coyne would chop his flaming lips off for, and the stunning “Something Good” combines campfire guitars with a metronome beat that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Sigur Rós album. The funny thing is that amongst the maelstrom, it never feels disorientating or bewildering. Every hook, every beat, every component is used thoughtfully and economically, meaning that each change up is as exciting, addictive and satisfying as the next - Joe Newman’s nasally vocals perfectly tying up everything like the twine on a mystery parcel. As far as genre bending first efforts go, An Awesome Wave is just that; awesome. Dan Ashcroft

I always look forward to competing at Cimaja, it’s a fun place and a great wave.” When asked what he feels has been the key to his success at Cimaja he replied, “I don’t know, I just get lucky there!” Cimaja is also the hometown of 2008 Indonesian Surfing Champion Dede Suryana, who won the West Java Open in 2010 in front of his hometown fans,

Alignment Now – June 18 “Alignment” presents artwork created by seven contemporary artists in diverse mediums, such as sketching, painting, installation, performance, and film. What differentiates this exhibition with the others is its intention to communicate beyond the “general aesthetic experience” and to provide insights and explanations on how the human body and mind interact with art on a deeper level. Through the visual, audio, and energetic “tools” used by the artists, their works are decoded by the mind and the auric field that arouses intelligent responses and induces adjustments within the body’s self regulating systems. This exhibition also aims to increase awareness and bring greater understanding to what occurs on the conscious, subconscious and metaphysical levels, while engaging with the works of art. The seven contemporary artists in this exhibition are I Gede Made Surya Darma, I Putu Wirantawan, Pras, Niccolò Italo Maria Bernasconi, I Kadek Dedy Sumantra Yasa, Sanjiwani, and Vony Dewi. Check out this exhibition at Bidadari Art Space which is going on until June 18.

ART
reating masterpieces for Naomi Samara is not just about making a sketch and coloring the images, but also how she can discover the story and process. Born in an artistic and eccentric family, Naomi often paints secluded and vulnerable figures isolated in their own canvases. The lonely subjects may be a direct reflection of a soul often times misunderstood by those closest to her. For Naomi, body language and awkward social interactions seem to command her attention. The female form, both tormented and sensual, have a bold confidence that seems to elicit a casual peace to the viewer that is anything but awkward because it inspires a silent confidence in it’s honesty. Because for the most part, they’re self portraits. Presently, she is busy with her own art space, Swoon, which actively holds monthly exhibitions aimed to introduce young artists from various backgrounds, while also working at Jenggala as a visual merchandiser. SPA
As far as benchmarks go, Rob Peeoom’s Bali location has raised the bar for the art of creating beauty
Look:
Designed by Dutch architect Ruud van Oosterhout, the super stylish Rob Peetoom Hair Spa is inspired by the communal living style of traditional Balinese villages. Three main buildings house an assortment of treatment areas, changing rooms and styling stations, and are interconnected by a series of stone walkways over gently flowing ponds. Realised in a luxurious yet minimalist style the spa is dominated by clean white spaces and striking black details to give that chic European feel. Most treatments take place in the fresh air on the rear decking area, which floats above a sea of gently swaying rice fields to provide the perfect spot for your pampering.
Feel:
Having been in the business of hair care and styling since 1969 when Rob Peetoom opened his first salon in The Netherlands, you can be assured that your locks will be in the very best hands for whatever treatment you choose – whether it be repairing sun damaged hair, a bold new colour or simply an indulgent massage to compliment your cut. But don’t just take my word for it, it’s no secret that a certain celebrity hotel heiress has been spotted at Rob Peetoom during her Bali sojourns – endorsements don’t get much better than that.
122
www.beatmag.com
Ingredients:
As you’d expect from a luxury hair spa, the products used at Rob Peetoom are all of the absolute highest quality. Think cutting edge serums, colourings, shampoos and conditioners from the likes of L’Oreal, Redken and Kérastase to ensure that when you walk out your hair will be looking and feeling its best. Before every treatment you are encouraged to consult with one of the expert therapists to decide exactly what works best for you
Magic:
There are plenty of spas in Bali, but Rob Peetoom is the only one that is dedicated to creating and maintaining perfect hair whilst also pampering the rest of you with an extensive menu of massages, mani/pedicures, reflexology, waxing and of course, hair care options. For an all inclusive treatment on the go, check out the Intensive Hair Treatment available in 15, 30, 45 and 60 minute options (180k++, 250k++, 450k++ and 550k++ respectively). The longer 30 – 60 minute versions kick off with a deep cleanse and shampoo, and include hair and mask, head, neck, back and hand massage with hot stone therapy and foot reflexology. Jl.
