Another year has gone by, and don’t they go quick now? As someone once said, the days are long but the years are short. This year has seen many changes on the island, more tourists, more new settlers, more environmental degradation, new restaurants and bars, a multitude of drug busts, rampant development of hotels and the arrival of the relentless and mind-bending traffic madness. 2013 will be a benchmark year for Bali as new infrastructure including the new airport, the new toll road and the underpass at Simpang Siur are due to be completed mid-year. These improvements are not going to be the cure-all for all the problems we face on the island in the coming years but they are a good step in the right direction. One of the reasons Bali faces these infrastructural problems is obviously bad planning in the past from the powers that be, but also the fundamental issue is that Bali is such a great place and literally millions of people like us want to experience it and/or want to live here. We can’t blame anyone for that. Inside this edition of the beat magazine catch all the New Year’s Eve photos from around town and everything else that was going on around Bali during the festive season. It was a fantastic time to be out and about with just about every venue jumping with a full-house every night of the week. New Year’s Eve this year was the busiest one ever on the island with thousands of people out in force - it was a festival atmosphere high and low. We would like to wish all our readers, advertisers, and friends, both of the beat magazine and the beat daily, a rich, rewarding and above all, Happy New Year 2013 and we will see you on the re-bound.

Please send contributions, letters, etc to editor@beatmag.com The opinions expressed in any article or advertisement are those of the writer or advertiser and not necessarily those of the Beat. The Beat crew takes no responsiblity for anyone caught out in the photos.

Ku De Ta Bali Releases Volume 3 of Its Acclaimed Album Series The Ku De Ta Bali’s album series perfectly reflects the forward-thinking sound of a day at the iconic lifestyle destination. The volume 3 album opens with the emotive, club-chill of “Only This Moment” by the Socialites. Besides, Tesla’s soulful vocal will rekindle memories of that special moment spent with Ku De Ta. The album then hits you with sublime pieces, like Satin Jackets’s hit “Hollywood” with their melodic modern disco, Dato’s upbeat “Got to Get Out” reflecting the Ku De Ta’s fun loving nature. Rocco Raimundo follows with upbeat groove “This is love”, one of the year’s best productions. Flight Facilities’ atmospheric funk sound in “With You” recalls sunset cocktails, while “Heartbreaker” by Crazy P offers an epic blend of live and electronic. If you like chilled electronic in your collection, this latest CD from KuDeTa is definitely for you. Available exclusively at Ku De Ta Boutique and on iTunes.

Loft Legian Hotel Fits All Your Needs

Waterbom Bali Waterbom Bali just launched the latest attraction called ‘The Shack’ on Friday, 21st December with a casual and fun Media Gathering. This rustic wooden structure reflects the image of being in a tropical environment, away from an urban setting, the opposite of being in a concrete office space. This new installment will add to the overall experience at Waterbom Bali. Need a break from all the slides, The Shack offers the alternative, a full serviced bar serving the freshest ‘Mojito’s’, the mint is literally picked from Waterbom’s own garden. Drinks or no drinks, The Shack also offers a place to ‘chill out’, sit in a hammock, play a game of backgammon, chess or many other games and defines the word ‘RELAX’. Another relaxing option is to have a reflexology treatment, all whilst listening great music to satisfy the soul and relax the hard worked body.

A new wellness program and fitness sessions with Ali Dixon are available for group exercise, personal training and group training for four a maximum of four people. Nahko & Medicine jazz cafe | sunday 06 jan Roots

Nakho was a child of mixed cultural descent and was adopted into an American family in Oregon. At a young age he often questioned the nature of race and identity as he was very much confused by his own. However, a talented musician, Nahko soon found solace in music, learning to play the piano at a young age. His talent grew and he was soon directing productions for various high-schools. He was discovered and sent to Denali in Alaska where by being surrounded by wilderness he began to cherish and respect the power of nature and slowly uncover the purpose in his life. His music often battles issues of race, gender and class. He often tours with a group of like-minded musicians known as Medicine for the People. Medicine for the People are a powerful fusion of great musicians that began in 2004. Both Nahko and the group, Medicine for the People have a cause that they fight for, “Healing with Music” or “Medicinal Music” and they aim to keep spreading their message of social and environmental justice. Bailey Scott, Max Ribner, Hope Medford and Don Corey form this fantastic group.

Sounds

International music, Jazz fusion, modern tribal

Where you might have heard him

Though their music is far from conventional, Nahko and Medicine for the People have been utterly dedicated to touring the world, moving constantly from one location to another. They are always in demand. They often travel to places like Bali and Hawaii but enjoy going wherever life takes them. They have worked with a variety of other musicians such as Seth Martin, the Ink Rementals and the Daughters of Water. Their single, “Me and Mr. Washington” is generally well liked by the community and generated positive reviews. Their movement of “Medicinal Music” has gained much popularity in many underground communities. www.beatmag.com

Why see him

Nahko and the Medicine for the People are a fantastic blend of fun and song. Their music is unique in all ways possible and is filled with an assortment of international instruments. What’s more, their performances are light with beats that are easy to dance to. Each and every song is a surprise, with some containing strong Hawaiian influences and others containing African beats. Seeing a performance like this is an entirely different experience in itself. Medicine for the People is also a non-profit organization, so you’ll be enjoying great beats while giving to a good cause at the same time!

DJ Jeremy Healy Cocoon Beach Club | saturday 12 jan Roots

DJ Jeremy Healy hails from London, England. A former singer, he was a member of the British pop group Hayzee Fantasy and often worked on the act, E-Zee Posse. His inherent love for music was apparent only equalled by his love for nightlife. He began work in a small club known as Planets in the 1980s. However, more influenced by pop at that time, his first hit, “John Wayne” made the number 1 on the UK charts. It was only in New York when he first discovered electronica and gave up pop for good. His career as a DJ began with his first DJ hit, “Everything Starts” and from then on his career led him into playing international high-end private parties. His interest in fashion has also led him into becoming a music director and allowed him to create many soundscapes. He has worked with a number of exclusive fashion designers such as Versace, Dior and Vivienne Westwood.

Sounds

Electronica, New Wave

Where you might have heard him

www.beatmag.com

Healy can be easily defined as a true master of sound. His career has led him past the Top of the Pops, to entering the world of business and fashion. Despite his extensive portfolio, Healy remains loyal to DJing. He has produced with Gwen Stefani and Boy George and he consistently has guest appearances with other musicians such as Attica, Money Pennys and the United Kingdom of Dance. He has been awarded the “DJ of the year award” once by Mixmag and once by The Face Magazine.

Why see him

Jeremy Healy is not only a DJ but also a fellow partier. His love and frequent visitations to the clubbing paradise, Ibiza proves that he truly understands what makes a party. Healy not only works wonders with a crowd but with his eccentric personality is rumored to be a wonder himself. His shows are wild and upbeat and he can really go on till dawn. His music is uniquely his own and is one of a kind. James Healy is truly an experience that is not to be missed.

The Virgin Boshe | friday 18 jan Roots

The Virgin began by chance in 2008 when Ahmad Dhani, the lead vocalist and front man of the Indonesian band Dewa 19, accidentally overheard the raw version of Cameria Happy Pramita’s (Mitha) song, “Cinta Terlarang” (Forbidden Love). He was instantly captivated by the song and decided that he wanted to produce it. Dhani, who was also a judge on the hit reality TV show Mamma Mia, saw great talent in one of the contestants; Dara Rizki Ruhiana (Dara). He then publicly promised her a recording deal if she failed to win the show itself. True to his word, when Dara was unsuccessful, he acquainted her with Mitha and together the two formed The Virgin.

Sounds

Indonesian Pop Rock

Where you might have heard him

This powerful duo is hard to miss and has become one of Indonesia’s best-loved icons. Their work has been well received and as such The Virgin has been winning at least 2 music awards each year since 2009. Their first two were both INBOX AWARDS and were the, “Pendatang Baru yang Paling Direquest” award (The most requested newcomers) and the “Video Klip Nomor Satu Terlama” award (The Longest Music Video Clip to Top the Charts). Mitha has also been the receiver of the SCTV’s Best Guitarist award twice. Needless to say, The Virgin has not lost it’s stride and has been able to maintain it’s strong position in the music industry. The duo’s music also has been used in a number of Indonesian films such as Cinta ½ Mati (Loving till Death) and Demi Nama Cinta (In the Name of Love).

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

With a legion of self-proclaimed die-hard fans known collectively as, “Virginity”, there is more to this feisty duo than meets the eye. While most of their success is largely attributed to their music, their persistent breakthroughs and achievements have been fueled by their fearlessness. Both girls know that they have talent and they are not afraid to use it. As such, the genre of “pop mainstream” has allowed them to explore various types of songs to express themselves. Their tunes can be sweet and loving or angsty and vengeful. However, all of their melodies are rife with passion with heartfelt lyrics that stem from their own romantic escapades and experiences. The Virgin plays songs that are pleasant and catchy. Their music is incredibly easy to relate to and is perfect for those who just want to enjoy a simple night out by listening to love songs.

Plastic plates hu’u bar | friday 18 jan

Roots

Plastic Plates is the alias of Felix Bloxsom, a deejay/producer from Sydney, Australia. The wunderkind who has seemed to have appeared out of nowhere with amazing remix productions such as Adele, Mark Ronson, The Human League, Empire of the Sun, The Magician, Body Language, Midnight Juggernauts and I Blame Coco has made a great start to his career as a DJ. His remixes have also shown up on mixtapes for Aeroplane (Adele remix), Mustang (Sia Remix), and even made second appearances for The Magician (Body Language remix). With remix and gig inquiries pouring in left and right from all over the world, one can only expect that this guy is on the rise.

Sounds

Electronic

Where you might have heard him

As a DJ Felix has performed in the USA, Europe, Mexico, Japan and Australia and has shared the stage with artists such as Breakbot, The Magician, Classixx, Etienne De Crecy, Mickey, U-tern, RAC and Bag Raiders. Plastic Plates’ distinct sound has attracted both indie, dance and mainstream pop artists to commission remixes from Felix. These artists include Adele, Sia, Body Language, The Human League, Sneaky Sound System, Katy Perry and Mark Ronson.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

While the name Plastic Plates may be new, Felix is by no means a newbie to the music world, and when the dust clears from all his remix and his original material releases, everyone will know that neither Felix nor his alias Plastic Plates are going away anytime soon. Catch him live at Hu’u next week.

Blue Ju!ce sos super club | friday 18 jan

Roots

Bluejuice are a rock band based in Sydney, Australia. The group consists of vocalists Jake Stone and Stavros Yiannoukas, bassist Jamie Cibej, keyboardist Jerry Craib and drummer James Hauptmann. In 2009, Bluejuice signed to the Australian record label Dew Process and recorded their second studio album at Big Jesus Burger in Sydney with producer/ mixer Chris Shaw (Bob Dylan, Public Enemy, Super Furry Animals, Weezer). Lead single “Broken Leg” debuted on the Australian Singles Chart at number 47 on 23 August 2009. They released the album Head of the Hawk on 18 September 2009, and it debuted at No. 37 on the Australian Albums Chart. “Broken Leg” eventually peaked at No. 27 on the Australian Singles Chart

Sounds

Indie-rock/funk/pop

Where you might have heard him

www.beatmag.com

Bluejuice released their debut album Problems in 2007 after two EPs and constant touring. Problems was well received by Rolling Stone magazine in Australia, which awarded the album a four out of five rating. The band’s first single, “Vitriol”, enjoyed airplay on the Australian national radio network Triple J, being the second most popular track in 2007 and ultimately reaching No. 11 in the annual Triple J Hottest 100 countdown in 2007. “Vitriol” ranked number 67 in the Australian Rolling Stone Magazine’s And The video clip for “Vitriol” won best clip at Sunscreen Video Awards in 2007.

Why see him

Bluejuice is a band you can’t miss for anything; a fundamental lack of control that defines one of Australia’s most energetic and emotionally unpredictable bands. After ten years of music, BLUEJU!CE are a dysfunctional family to whom music is basically group therapy.

international”, the correct term that should be used is “go-diaspora”. What happened with Navicula last month was neither go-international nor go-diaspora. But it might be the most international recognition you can imagine for a relatively unknown Indonesian band in America, the music mecca of the world, the biggest music industry globally. After winning two different rock competitions organised by two different, huge international business entities, the Balinese quartet were flown to, and played in Quebec, Canada, in September. Then, just a few weeks after that they were again flown to Los Angeles for a 3-day recording session—with some concerts around California following: in Berkeley, San Fransisco, Davis, Ventura, and Bakersfield, to name a few. For this veteran music collective just to be in Hollywood, doing a proper recording—the best recording in their entire careers, to be precise—

www.beatmag.com

In

the Indonesian music industry there’s a word that has been used frequently—a bit too frequently, maybe—and sadly inappropriately: go-international. Every time Indonesian musicians tour overseas, or perform in any way outside of Indonesia, it will—most of the time—be easily referenced in the media as them “going-international”. But more often than not, in fact, the event is organised by Indonesian expats (students/workers), played in front of Indonesian communities (and when you see bule/non-Indonesians, they are either the husbands/wives of the Indonesians or exIndonesian residents), using Indonesian on stage to communicate, and have usually received full— other than financial—support from Indonesian consulates in the cities they play. In other words: from Indonesia, for Indonesians. Business as usual. Don’t even imagine the phenomenal Asian invasion like Psy via “Gangnam Style”. Nothing really international at all, except being physically outside of Indonesia. Instead of “go-

in Record Plant (Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, Motley Crue, etc, have been Record Plant’s regular customers), was already special. Then, to be taken care of by a famous sound engineer/ producer/artist, Alain Johannes (former member of Queens of the Stones Age and Them Crooked Vultures, session musician for Foo Fighters, current guitarist of Spinnerette, and upcoming producer of Jimmy Eat World’s newest album), during Navicula’s very first trip to the USA; all those facts were so overwhelming, too good to be true. So from the first day in the legendary recording studio (which totally amazed them, and the magic still hasn’t worn off) Robi, Dankie, Bull and Made wasted no time, were super serious, and gave their live recording their very best shot. Their target was to finish five songs in three days, and they succeeded. Those five songs will be used for their upcoming album, scheduled to be released in 2013. According to Robi (vocalist), the sophisticated set up of the instruments and sound system in the studio naturally boosted their spirits and created extra energy for surviving the long recording process, from early morning till late at night, for three days straight. Not only were the boys in a very positive and productive mood, the sound engineer/producer was as well. Alain Johannes could not hide how blown away he was by Navicula. He admitted to the boys that he never dared to dream about helping out a competition winner of Navicula’s quality. He had thought he’d be dealing with an okay band from La La Land— who know a thing or two about playing, have one radio-friendly song, have the rocking frontman factor, it’s all good, on the scale of mediocrity. Duly impressed, Alain ended up inviting Navicula to do an additional one day recording (for free!) at his own studio at his house.

www.beatmag.com

During the recording session, RODE mic, the company that brought Navicula to The States, also made a special documentary movie about the recording session which will be premiered in Sydney, Australia, on January 10, 2013, at which Robi & co. will play during their next overseas trip. Jetlag? Screw that. After recording in LA, the boys went directly to Berkeley to perform in the infamous all-ages club 924 Gilman Street (co-owned by the founder of Maximumrocknroll, Tim Yohannan, where Green Day, Offspring, AFI, all played in their early days). This might be the first time ever that an Indonesian band performed there. Even though the venue wasn’t too full, the audience was seriously stunned. Same during the concert in San Francisco, two nights later. The venue was 3/4 full but the response was excellent. Not only

because of their tight musicianship and solid songs but the audience was also very engaged by the mini documentary that Navicula made previously, during their Greenpeace-organised Kalimantan tour (where Robi & co. for 12 days rode motorbikes crossing Borneo to witness the rainforest and ecosystem destruction). The following shows in Davis, Bakersfield, Ventura, and Joshua Tree got better and better receptions in each town. Most notable was the gig on December 7 in Bakersfield where Navicula opened for H.R. (of Bad Brains). It was their biggest show of the trip. Maybe because H.R. has living legend status, but still, Navicula stole the show and had a chance to enthusiastically introduce themselves to H.R. Other than having to cancel their concerts in New York and other East Coast cities due to financial dramas and the short notice/lack of preparation, it all went well for our beloved Bali musicians who used to be the regular headliners—together with Superman Is Dead—of The Beat Rock Fest in the early days. The band who’ve been around since 1996 seem to be ready for an international audience, and vice versa. Go international? Not quite there yet. But grunge diaspora, certainly, hell yeah. See you in Sydney next week! Rudolf Dethu spent many days with Navicula during their trip crossing California in a dodgy, near identical Almost-Famous van.

If you are reading this, you have survived the Mayan Prophecy that the world will end. Whatever your take on it, it is now essential that you wrestle back control of your own life, take responsibility and quit being fatalistic about the pointlessness of trying. It is time to take bold steps, don’t be afraid to stand out, stand up and be counted. Hell, it’s 2013. New Year’s resolutions always strike me as being as misguided as trying to give things up on a Monday. Monday is already a bad day, why make it worse? New Year’s Day is a day where any self respecting fan of alcohol will be lying low, eating carbohydrates and hiding in a cool, dark room. Is this the day to start your detox, your new gym routine or start being nicer to people you don’t really like? Far better instead to start addressing the things in your life that can be changed through better intentions. These are usually issues that be can considered while lying down. Help people in need? This is a good one to aim for, if nothing else it looks good on the list.

www.beatmag.com

Adopt a healthy hobby? Yes. You don’t have to get up and start it on New Year’s Day as it may take some time and research to identify what this might be, so you can ease into this one. Make more time for yourself? Highly recommended and while you’re at it, pass the remote control. Update your look? An excellent choice and one that can be taken in stages, nothing too abrupt. Considering your new look will involve reading magazines and researching hairdressers etc who

also offer good pampering treatments. Give yourself a month at least. Save money? Definitely another activity that requires strategizing, time to get out the list and write down all the ways you can save, while lying in a cool room. Get active? Yes, this is good. Head to the beach and think about it, get inspiration from others who are swimming, surfing and jogging to avoid the rain. Get motivated? This can be done while researching and signing up for motivational sites, The Daily Love is a nice one, offering all sorts of feel-good-about-yourself advice. It arrives in your inbox each morning, perfect. Stop smoking? All that festive season partying has probably left you with a bad taste in your mouth so this can be achieved with a full dosage of patches or champix if it doesn’t send you mad. Takes about two months for the treatment. Best of all stress encourages more smoking so relax. Positive Affirmations? Picture yourself in a lovely home, with money in the bank, lots of admirers and an efficient working life. It’s that easy, or so they say. Stop worrying. That’s all, also easy. In a nutshell, it seems that the best resolutions are the easiest of all, simply relax, picture your new self and concentrate very hard (this is the most difficult bit), according to the laws of the universe, this will work. Too easy. Happy 2013 [Sarah Dee]

Constructed almost entirely of bamboo poles lashed together, the ramshackle Robinson Crusoe vibe will hit the moment you duck under the low slung thatched roofing and enter the main restaurant area. Rough hewn wooden surfaces, coral brick walls and nautical style ropes slung between thick posts all contribute to a natural, homey sort of feel, with a choice of places to hang out. There’s the main bar area bedecked in hanging lanterns overhead, the cosy restaurant section where you can feel sand between your toes, and a large raised expanse of sun loungers, best utlised for lounging under the sun.

s Bali life gets ever more hectic it’s good to know that there are still places around the island that provide a real lost in paradise feeling. Places where the cares and stresses of the daily grind simply dissolve in a heady mixture of powder white sand, azure blue ocean and cocktails with little paper umbrellas. Toy

Toy

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

S

tumbling into the psychedelic netherworld of Toy is nothing if not a giddy thrill –all the soaring chunks of garage-rock, violence and post-punk drama fronted by scraggly-haired frontman Tom Dougall, crooning away like a hungover spectre from behind his fringe while the rest of the band disappear into heavily feedbacked miasma of Neu! Krautrockclatter. Formed from the remnants of now defunct Indie rockers Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, NME picked them as one of the “100 new bands you must hear”, but perhaps most apt was one critic’s assertion that Toy sounds like “some kind of late-80s jam session between Stereolab, Felt and Pulp”. Wowsers. The album doesn’t open with a bang, but with ‘Colours Running Out’ fading in like a slow motion wave, almost like it’s been playing in the background the whole time and you’ve only just turned the volume up. The poppy post-punk sparkle of the euphoric ‘The Reasons Why’ then dissolves into ‘Dead & Gone’ to make an opening trilogy that will make your average East London band sick with envy. ‘My Heart Skips a Beat’ is a beautifully choreographed ballad dripping in synthesizer, and ‘Drifting Deeper’ runs off like a druggy ghost train ride to nowhere. Multi-layered ‘Kopter’ ends the metamorphic trip in a suitably spaced out fashion. Still in their infancy, Toy are a good band that still have some way to go before settling in to being a great one, but if this debut is anything to go by, the future looks very bright indeed. Harmony Now – January 23

Putu Bonuz is an abstract painter who comprehends well the meaning and symbol of colors that is sometimes involved with the color of Hindu Gods. Color takes an important role in abstract paintings, since there are a lot of perspectives in it and not many people can understand the messages that are portrayed in the paintings. This time, in his latest exhibition being held at Rumah Seni Maestro, called “Harmony”, Bonuz tries to hunt the harmony of abstract paintings by exploring colors that also represent the human chakras, such as black, red, white, yellow, and blue. The scratched colors in the Bonuz’s works contain certain meanings and it is up to the people how they want to interpret it. Go and find out more on this exhibition which will be up until January 23. MadeWianta multitalented artist, Made Wianta has a strong sense of environmental awareness and social responsibility. He manifests his senses into several art installations that have been exhibited nationally and internationally at prestigious galleries and museums. Born in the village of Apuan, Tabanan, Bali, Wianta’s mastery of color and form on canvas is matched by his passion in poetry, body movement in dance, and sense of rhythm in music. He also combines those three elements into installation or happening art events.

Presently, the artist is holding an exhibition at Gaya Art Space titled “Treasure Island”, a series of artwork inspired by the Indonesia’s abundant natural resources as the main treasures within the archipelago. The idea comes from the process of barong making and some materials required to create one, such as raw buffalo leather that represents an island, mirrors representing the treasures and reflections of human greed, and nails representing the sharpness of mind.

their continuous effort to always make a positive difference, the happiest girl’s brand in the world, Surfer Girl partnered with Odyssey Surfing School to host a surfing session with orphans at Kuta Beach on Saturday, 22 December 2012.

where another exciting event was waiting; an environmental game by Surfer Girl. Conducted by the CSR team of Surfer Girl, the fun game was designed to inform and emphasize on the importance of waste segregation, with the kids racing to place each mentioned type of garbage into its appropriate bin.

10 children from the Elisama Orphanage in Denpasar came to Kuta Beach for surfing lessons with an Odyssey surf instructor who was dressed in a full Santa Claus outfit. Helping with the teaching was Santa’s ‘assistants,’ which were Surfer Girl’s own team riders. The 6 team riders – aged from 10 to 14 years old – were so stoked to be able to share their surfing techniques and play along with the kids.

The kids and all the team riders had a blast during this half-day event, especially when it came to jumping into the waves. Although this was the first-time surfing for most of the kids from the orphanage they were fearless, with most being able to stand up on a surfboard on the shorebreaks of Kuta Beach, right after a halfan-hour theory session.

The event was not only about surfing, but was also packed with lots of fun and informative content. To start the day, the kids visited the Balawisata Lifeguards where the lifeguard on duty, Bapak Made Sujana, shared insights on safety when swimming in the sea. Following the visit, the kids then joined in a beach clean-up along the shores of Kuta Beach, then to the place

Surfer Girl’s Head of Marketing Communications Nadia Bintoro also handed over donations in the form of Surfer Girl merchandise to the Elisama Orphanage, saying, “We’re really thankful for the orphanage and Odyssey Surfing School for this wonderful opportunity to share with the community. We’re sure that this won’t be a oneoff event. We are looking forward to hosting more fun-filled, charity events in 2013.”

L’Spa

a chic urban spa

Look:

L’Spa is part of the L Hotel in Petitenget. The 30 room boutique hotel is a picture of urban chic and the spa is a reflection of all that is sexy, up-market and sophisticated. Bathed in fashionable grey with a bubbling plunge pool in the courtyard, the rooms are intimate and luxurious. Splashes of colour in the public areas give way to low light and muted colours in the spa rooms. It is a haven for those who seek higher pleasure and enjoy the best.

www.beatmag.com

Feel:

With a memorable menu of massages and treatments, the staff at L’Spa are well trained. From the initial greeting followed by a wonderful footbath before starting the treatment of your choice, this spa is a lovely combination of modern treatments and Asian favourites. My massage of choice, the Swedish was excellent, combining long strokes with cupping motions that stimulate and relax while picking up the circulation. Recommended are the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, the Balinese, Sense Therapy, Warm Stone Massage and a balancing Four Hand massage.

Ingredients:

Alongside some well-known brands including Clarins and Pevonia, L’Spa has their own line, Langley. With sophisticated packaging, it is a locally produced brand made with all natural ingredients that smell heavenly and feel luxurious. L’Spa offers a choice.

Magic:

Built with a sophisticated clientele in mind, L’Spa will appeal to both men and women. With hour long massages starting at just 270,000 it is chic and affordable. The extras such as the foot bath are a great way to start the massage as is the therapists call to tune into your breath before the treatment begins. It all feels lovely and the rooms are inviting and comfortable.

MUSCLE& COMMON SENSE Basic Understandings to A Healthier You By Irma Barzdaite Personal Fitness Trainer and Nutritional Specialist. EQF L4 | EREPS

H

ave you ever wondered why there are more ways of losing weight these days, but yet more people are getting out of shape? Obesity is increasing the world over as fitness organizations and gurus try desperately to tackle this global problem that has the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation & Development) predicting 2 out of 3 people will be clinically obese by the year 2020. But with so much information out there, how do I know what to do? Like everything, there are basic understandings we can use as the foundations to a healthier lifestyle in the midst of our busy lives. Understanding HOW we get out of shape is the first step in taking action. Let me explain it to you in simple terms. As we age, our bodies begin to loose muscle. Research shows that between the ages of 30 and 60 you will loose approximately 60% of your muscle mass. So why is this so important and what has it got to do with body fat?

www.beatmag.com

Muscle loss slows down your metabolism (the rate that you burn your fat for energy) by up to 45%. 1lb of muscle burns 50 calories at rest. This is the reason why we start getting out of shape as we get older and our bodies start the infamous ‘sagging’ process! So, what is the answer..? Whatever form of fitness training you are doing, it must include you gaining muscle or at the very least not losing it. There is no point in looking at a slightly smaller number on the scales and kidding yourself in thinking that this means you are in better shape when all you have really done is helped the aging process along. So gaining even a few pounds of muscle will increase your metabolism and is crucial to this whole process.

But what about my food, what should I eat? Once again, my advice again is simple, EAT NATURAL FOODS! Stay away from processed food, which has ‘very little calories’. Do not be fooled by the modern day marketing phenomenon of making us believe that everything is to do with low calories. Fresh, locally sourced food with no or little additives should always be the basis of any diet you do. Common sense goes a long way in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. For example, if you buy a soda drink advertised as having no sugar, and it still tastes sweat it means there are other sweetening agents that more than often have a worse effect on the body than sugar. So build muscle, eat natural foods and above all, use good old fashion common sense. These are the basic understandings to your new and approved healthier lifestyle.
