VIP areas are good and they serve a purpose. Meanwhile, the weather has been fantastic lately on Bali. Beautiful blue days and clear nights, but the high season has been a mixed bag this year. At the beginning, with the arrival of Idul Fitri, it was busy and I recall being stuck in bad traffic through Jimbaran and thinking, here we go, high season has arrived. Then pan forward to the Thursday between Idul Fitri and Hari Merdeka, and driving down to Kuta to the Hard Rock Café, and we didn’t hit any traffic at all. It was more like low season and this was two days before Independence Day, usually the busiest period of the year. So what does that tell us? I notice there are a lot of people in Thailand on holidays lately and many people from here. Is there a correlation? Prices have been going up a lot lately which must be having an effect on the lower end of the market and also all the bad news running around the press on the bad traffic wouldn’t help. But maybe it is just the effect of having Idul Fitri, Lebaran and Hari Merdeka falling so close to each other this year, which is out of anybody’s control, making this year’s high season appear to be a little wobbly. There were some good parties over the Merdeka long weekend though. Potato Head’s John Legend show was a little half baked not having a full band, but many people enjoyed the intimacy of it till there was a kind of power outage just after the DJ began. I suppose they got that sorted out eventually. We moved onto Ku De Ta for the White Party and that was going through the roof. People dressed up, all in white and a very glitzy and glamorous affair it was. We are lucky to have these parties this time of year. They are a lot of work, pressure and the venues aren’t guaranteed of anything when you think about it. It could rain or something could go wrong and they lose the lot. Those parties, the fine dining, and the bars and night clubs offering all kinds of entertainment make Bali a great place to visit for people looking for a good time and a good holiday. But it is fragile, people now have a lot more options to go on holiday in the region and we have to keep our game up to the highest level. Try to give them what they want but let’s not forget to give them a good time, all of them.

SCOOP Treatment of the month – September 2013 Reshape your face seven years younger in 30 minutes! No we’re not talking about a 30 minute beat down. Aquamid has come up with the latest innovation for treatment of wrinkles, ‘smile lines’, furrows and scars on the face as well as lip augmentation. It is a new generation dermal filler similar to Restylane and Esthelis but has some major differences in terms of its treatment profile. Foremost, it lasts at least seven years meaning that there will be no repeat injections. Secondly, it has additional uses not seen with Restylane such as nose bridge augmentation (enlargement), cheek and chin augmentation and for the correction of facial deformities and scars. Throughout September there will be 20% off at ARC.

Charlie Charlie is a restaurant/bar that is intended to become the place for friends to gather over a good meal or just to pop in for a few drinks. The venue itself is supposed to resemble an old mansion, with certain parts of the walls deliberately made to look like their deteriorating. The lay out of the place goes as follows; the ground floor is a laid-back city café and bakery, upstairs is the main drinking area with a spacious bar and lounge. This area will be used as the stage for the best live acts and DJs. Moreover, there are several private dining and sitting areas, as well as a VIP balcony on the second floor that over looks the main bar. Charlie’s cocktails use only natural ingredients and no added sugar, plus all the syrups and infusions are homemade. One last awesome fun fact – Charlie is the only bar in Bali that serves on the rocks drinks with the hand carved crystal clear ice cubes. Opening hours for the bar are from 7pm - 1am every day and they have valet parking.

The Sanur Village Festival The Sanur Village Festival is back and is being held from September 24-28. The choice of venue is the Inna Grand Bali Beach where lots of activities are due to take place. First up, there is going to be a lot of environmental activities such as; cleaning the beach and mangroves, replanting coral for reef rehabilitation, turtle releases and interactive dialogue with environmental experts. The main aim of the festival is to attract large number of tourists from various countries. After its huge success in previous years, the organizers of the event are planning to make this one even better and bigger. This year Sanur village festival promises a lot of water sports activities. The event is inspired by marine life, so to all you beach and water sports lovers out there pack your bags and have a wonderful time at Sanur Village Festival.

SCOOP TORCH , real reggae in Bali Growing up in the rough streets of Trench Town, Torch eventually caught the eye of Big Stone, MC of the Culture Yard show held in honour of the late great Robert Nester Marley. In 2005, he was touring with Buju Banton, and making connections with some of the big name producers in the business. Torch is an old school classic reggae artist and everyone on the island is lucky enough to have a chance to experience and enjoy the real authentic reggae beats. He will be travelling around the island for the next month and although no dates and venues are set in stone, check out torchmusic.weebly.com if you really want to check out some authentic reggae from where it came from.

Ubud readers and writers festival releases line-up The 2013 Festival program has launched! From 11-15 October, the Ubud writers and readers festival is welcoming more than 170 brilliant writers performers, artists, musicians and visionaries to speak across all forms of storytelling. Over five days and nights, Ubud will come alive with live music and performances, food and art markets and parties that run late into the night. Expect fascinating cross-cultural conversations, high-profile international authors, and the opportunity to discover new and exciting local voices at this year’s Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. Joining the line-up — and in his first Festival appearance in the region — is bestselling UK author Sebastian Faulks (Birdsong, Devil May Care), Lionel Shriver (We Need to Talk about Kevin), Lonely Planet co-founder Tony Wheeler, legendary Australian cartoonist Michael Leuning and Festival favourite Richard Flanagan.

W Bali Welcomes Facialist Extraordinaire Su-Man to AWAY Spa London-based former dancer and shiatsu expert, Su-Man Hsu, originally from Taiwan will be having exclusive ‘facial pop-up’ sessions at the award-winning AWAY Spa. Described by one of many famous stars as a life-changing experience, Su-Man’s signature facial technique is an outstanding amalgamation of her Pilates training and facial massage knowledge. This technique, dubbed as an alternative to Botox, involves opening the tension channels so as to not interfere with the natural beauty of your face and 36 strokes to the skin in the process of getting back that energy and moisture equilibrium at your face, neck, décolletage and shoulders. The offer will run from October 5-11 from 9am to 6pm, with only five 60-minute treatments in a day. Sign up today with a mere cost of USD 150++/ person by calling 4738 106 or sending an email to awayspa.wbali@whotels.com www.beatmag.com

Harry “Choo Choo” Romero (NYC)

friday aug 30

Roots

Born and raised in a musical family, Harry “Choo Choo” Romero was immersed in Latin and opera rhythms since his childhood. He drew inspiration from classic hip hop artists such as Run DMC as well as the Latin free style movement and started his DJ career at a nightclub in New Jersey.

Sounds

House, electro

Where you might have heard him

Choo Choo’s rise to prominence can be traced back to his “Urban Turban” track in 1995 under his Soulfuric alias and his Just Can’t Get Enough record in 1999, which put his name in the UK Singles Chart at #39. Harry resumed his production duties for labels like Emotive, Sex Mania, Power Music, and Subliminal Records. Romero has also kept himself busy with various collaborations in remixing and producing tracks with his label mates, most notably with Erick Morillo, best known for his hit, “I Like to Move It” (1993) and Jose Nuñez, best known for his US Billboard #1 track “In My Life” (1998). With the latter one, under the Constipated Monkeys moniker, they produced a Top 10 Dance hit entitled “Cro-Magnon (What About Our Love)”, whereas Harry’s work with both Jose and Erick under the Sympho Nympho moniker earned them the Muzik Magazine Remixer of the Year award in 1999. Romero has been a resident DJ at the SE1 club in London for four years and then a regular headlinee at the Subliminal Session parties worldwide, including those in Pacha, Ibiza. He also owns a sub label of Subliminal called Bambossa Records.

Why see him

Harry is no stranger to house music fans in New York and London and is on the Spinach All Stars Road Trip, so mark it on your calendar that he’ll be at Hypnotized on August 30!

Style of Eye - Arno Cost -Richard Durand

saturday aug 31

Roots

Style of Eye is a Swedish DJ/producer whose real name is Linus Eklöw. This Stockholm native was drawn to music when he was 13, getting inspiration from musicians like Stevie Wonder and the 19th century classical composer Edvard Grieg. Arno Cost – This music producer, remixer and DJ was born in Paris on New Year 1987 and is one of the most promising young French talents. Being brought up in a music oriented family, his diet has been pretty much comprised of all things music, especially house with a French touch. Richard Durand – Born in Amsterdam in 1975, Richard was led into the musical path by playing piano at a young age. With ever more exposure to the club scene around his hometown, he now blends trance, techno, and electro into his sets and was hailed as ‘Tip For The Top’ by Tiësto.

Sounds

Style of Eye – house, techno, electro; Arno Cost – electronica, disco, house; Richard Durand – trance, techno, electro, progressive house

Where you might have heard them

Style of Eye –In January 2008, SoE dropped his debut EP called “The Big Kazoo”, which was his first Beatport top 10 entry. In that same year, his debut 13-track album entitled Duck, Cover and Hold eventually hit the shelves under Pickadoll imprint. He also has produced tracks for artists like Icona Pop and Fenech Soler as well as remixed works of Swedish House Mafia, Kylie and Miike Snow. Arno Cost – Arno has been most associated with Norman Doray and Pierre de la Touche in an act called The Freshmakers. Together, they released a few singles like “Let U Go” and did remixes that went on to receive massive airplay nationally and hit the top two in the UK Club Charts. His original productions have also headlined a number of international festivals from Europe to as far as Australia, and in 2008 he was asked to continue in David Guetta’s footsteps in mixing Radio FG’s new compilation, Club FG. Richard Durand – It goes without saying that he will be the next king of trance, looking at how he was given the opportunity to remix Tiësto’s “Lethal Industry”, “Flight 643”, and “Break My Fall”. Richard’s also graced many A-list events internationally as well as being the new frontier for Black Hole Recordings’ In Search Of Sunrise series since 2010.

Why see them

With three of them put together in one place, there is no doubt that your late night party will be an unrivalled one. Their achievements already speak for themselves. So catch them at District on August 31.

Doc Martin

sunday sept 1

Roots

Doc Martin began his mission on the decks in Los Angeles back in the summer of 1986. His focus on mixing house music with funk and disco brought him to the warehouse scene in San Francisco. He soon became one of the major players, laying the foundations of a strong West Coast dance scene. Doc was a master at winning crowds with his music and being able to play a myriad of different styles. After several years of masterminding epic eight-hour sets at clubs including Flammable Liquid and Sunday Love, Martin relocated to Los Angeles, where he soon took up residency at the Metropolis. By the mid-90s, he was also the first West Coast DJ to hold a number of residencies in New York, appearing at clubs including the Roxy, Twilo and the Tunnel.

Sounds

All types of house, funk and disco.

Where you might have heard him

While most star DJs are one-note musicians sticking to a single sub-genre of music, Doc’s live sets are lively, fun and bring many styles of music as well as people together. In this age of specialized formats among DJs and producers, Doc is one of the most sought after DJs in America, constantly touring, he can be found playing records everywhere from New York to London, Japan, and everywhere in between. Doc Martin is also known for his collaboration with singer/songwriter Lillia. Together they started the Sublevel record label based out of Los Angeles and have toured Japan, USA, Europe and Canada. Whether in an underground club or festival you can always feel the warm energy of Sublevel. He has also frequently played and was a resident at such clubs as, Fabric (London), Panorama Bar (Berlin), Womb (Tokyo), Ghost Bar / Sound Bar (Las Vegas), Previlege (Ibiza), Amnesia (Ibiza) and Ministry (London).

Why see him

What sets Martin apart from his peers is his ability to spin everything from deep house vocal, to funky tribal bass lines mixed with threads of acid and then incorporate his passive collection of classic records that are only to be heard at his gigs. Don’t miss him when he spins at Woobar September 1.

Bebi Romeo is the stage name of Virdy Megananda, a musician/singer as well as a famous songwriter from Indonesia who was one of the judges in the first season of X Factor Indonesia. The addition of the word Romeo in his alias brings us back to the year of 1999 when he co-wrote and sang the hit single “Bunga Terakhir” (Last Flower) for his band, Romeo, which he is famous for. Prior to his career in Romeo, Bebi was the vocalist of another band called Bima and released one album back in 1997.

Sounds

Pop, rock

Where you might have heard him

Since 2005, Bebi has focused more on his career as a composer and a solo singer. This is shown in his debut solo album entitled The Singer-Songwriter which featured some of his best composed tracks thus far along with other songs sung by other singers such as Rita Effendy. At the start of the new millennium, Bebi’s original track “Mencintaimu” (Loving You) sung by Indonesian diva Krisdayanti clinched a number of awards both in Indonesia and Singapore as the best song of the year. Bebi has also written songs for other widely-acclaimed national musicians such as Ari Lasso (“Perbedaan”) and Chrisye (“Andai Aku Bisa”). His other composed tracks can also be found in his four compilation albums; with the latest one entitled Bebi Romeo Masterpiece which contains a song called “Do You Really Love Me” featuring legendary R&B trio Boyz II Men. Bebi scouted and newly formed three-piece girl band – Soul Sister. In 2010, Bebi officially launched his own record label and talent agency called Keci Music.

Why see him

Bebi Romeo has been thriving in Indonesia’s competitive music scene and produced some hit singles in Indonesia, he is one artist you don’t want to miss. Catch him live at Akasaka Music Club on September 6.

Miguel Migs

friday sept 6

Roots

Miguel Migs, born as Miguel Sundance Steward is a DJ, producer and remixer from San Francisco. Growing up with a great passion for reggae, soul, classic rock, R&B, jazz and hip hop, Migs became the lead guitarist and songwriter at the age of 18 for a Santa Cruz reggae band called Zion Sounds. Despite the band being disbanded in the mid 1990s, his songwriting and live performance background led to a firm foundation in the DJing realm.

Sounds

House, soul, electronic, dance, dub, funk

Where you might have heard him

The Northern California native, after releasing a string of EPs into the market, had his debut studio album entitled Colorful You in 2002 on Astralwerks, which brought Migs to a broader dance audience. Afterwards, things just got better and better for him and he was called upon to remix works of big-name musicians like Macy Gray, Lionel Richie, and Brittney Spears. He has also been regarded as an amazing façade of Naked Music Recordings, releasing a number of DJ mixes under his Petalpusher and L’isha pseudonyms that made waves both in the underground circuit and international music charts. Migs finally conceived his new music outlet called Salted Music in 2004 on which his 2007 album Those Things was released and went on to win The 7th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Dance/Electronica Album. The imprint itself was voted as the Best Indie Label Site at the Independent Music Awards Vox Pop. In 2011, his latest album Outside The Skyline featured an ensemble of vocalists from a wide musical spectrum.

Why see him

Miguel Migs is the personification of the concept that Naked Music has been associated with, a chilled-out and soul-driven vibe. But that’s not all, he can spin that funky house with the best of them and he plays at Hu’u Bar on September 6.

DJs Galore This is the question we asked: Now that we’re in a world where vinyl is in the past and the laptop reigns supreme, is it too easy to be a DJ?

Jean Marc: I don’t know what you’re talking about, in my world vinyls are the future.

Martin East: It really depends on your definition of a DJ. Just because you can work the machines does this make you a DJ? The coming and going of various platforms that help novices to achieve the techniques that used to take years to learn. They help of course. But the thing that you can not buy or instantly acquire is taste.

Silvie Beatrix: It is not easy to be a good and intelligent DJ. Remember that a “disc jockey’s” job is to select and play “records” to entertain a crowd . In the 80s I put one 33-inch maxi single vinyl after the next without mixing to create a happy

James Laboueff: Ask Paris Hilton.

92

www.beatmag.com

The element of the curator that came with collecting vinyl - I feel that is gone. Which is a shame. It defined some DJs. When you hear a DJ who truly has this still (a la DJ Harvey) you can hear the difference. But access to music is of course much easier. Where there now is a proliferation of good bad and indifferent tunes around. Which you can download with one click. Therefore... the filter (your taste) will become the defining factor. However, ones ability to weave a narrative with said tunes into an interesting or dynamic experience for a guest/dancer/listener. This to me is what makes a DJ. You can not instantly develop this. And if you can - then good on you I take my hat off to you.

atmosphere to make people dance! The last rave I went to recently was so bad that I was overwhelmed with noise not music . Did you know that according to a 2012 study there are approximately 1¼ million professional DJs in the world. There are too many self absorbed horrific ones and I respect DJs with a musical education and background who make a huge difference in today’s messy electronic “EDM” scene .

ALEX VErDAcCHI: For sure computers and programs make DJing easier... Press the sync button... Boom... Seamless mixes, but truthfully the sync button is a choice, so not all DJs playing with laptops take the easy way out. Thank god there isn’t a program for acquiring musical taste yet. You still have to know what you’re playing, who to play it to and when to play it. I think that’s what makes a good DJ. Having said that, bring back the vinyl!

FEATURES

Mistral: In my opinion, now that the access to being a DJ is made easy with technology (controllers, sync buttons). Everyone can jump in and start off effortlessly

Mikey Moran DJing now seems to be all preprogrammed. With the use of Traktor and Serato, playlists are made and quite often even top DJs are now seen playing the same set list. For new DJs, I think it’s becoming a little too easy because there are so many coming into the scene. Me moving from vinyl to CDs to Serato then Traktor, yes everything is now simplified. However, the true art is in your song selection, flow, and the ability to rock a crowd. That is the true test!

Sayan Gulino: Firstly vinyl sounds better, warmer and is timeless, however vinyl isn’t as readily available

but, also the level of creativity that comes with that technology gets more complex, it’s not only about the art of mixing two tracks together, now you can do so much more with it. And again being a DJ is about the whole package, people can start off easily but you still need creativity, music taste, connection and a very outgoing personality to be a good and successful DJ.

Daniel Suwenda: No... Every DJ has got his own DNA in how to take a crowed on a journey... Regardless if its digital or vinyl... It all comes down to the skills and how a DJ presents his music and really puts on a show. Through his music. FYI a lot of the CDJ turntables have a sync button to it. But still can be used to scratch etc.. And these days DJs only bring a USB stick with 10,000 tracks and edits ready to be rolled out.

Rok Sivante Since the proliferation of pencils and crayons, it may have become too easy to be an “artis”. You could teach a monkey to beatmatch, and anybody can play songs back to back. Does that alone make a DJ? “Everybody and their dog is a DJ, nowadays…” a mentor used to say. Though, the true artists, the ones who can rock a party right, who can consistently create an exceptional experience-these are rare... Anyone can learn and do the technical side and technology has made it much easier… But… The discerning taste for quality, the sensitivity to read the energy of a room and subtly direct the vibe in a venue, taking listeners on an expansive, enriching, emotional journey (whether they are conscious of it or not), the creativity to fuse elements from diverse genres together to leave a memorable impact upon those they share their passion with for a sunset or night’s moments, uplifting their vibration and infusing their experience with an energy and soul no gadget can duplicate… These are the marks of a master DJ. Part Godgifted, and part developed over years of immersion in their craft… I could call myself an artist because I know how to use a crayon. But if all I can draw is a stick man, does that make me an artist?

as it used to be. Yes it’s easier to be a DJ these days, technology is the push... But the difference between a ‘real DJ’ and a button pusher is ‘taste’, real DJs will crate dig for hours, days, weeks or months to find gems, music that is made from the soul, music that requires skill, music with quality production.. Not music that is shallow, has no substance and is made solely to be ‘catchy’..

DAMIAN SAINT: Firstly vinyl is far from in the past or dead. It’s making a huge come back through out Europe and growing. I’ve started buying vinyl again recently and can’t wait to start using it at gigs. The laptop and sync buttons have definitely made it far too easy for talentless idiots to become “DJs”. Laptop, cracked version of Traktor, a midi controller to make you look like you know what you’re doing (but you don’t), some tracks from Zippyshare, Beatport top 10 EDM anthems, sunglasses to wear at night in a club equals modern day DJ.

MAC: I suppose that it would be easy to do and learn anything, but what will make the difference is one’s talent. As we know that can not be thought or bought. To learn a profession to make money or to make money knowing a profession. www.beatmag.com

Shadowhunters, Vampires on the Run, and a Gorilla on the field by: pande

Ok, so these aren’t you typical summer blockbusters. Hell, they’re probably movies you should avoid if you’re over the age of 25 and if you’re older than 30, forget this page and do something else with your time. Life is too short to be wasted watching bad films and these are... well, not good unless you’re young and have horrible taste in films. You might want to visit a DVD shop near you so that you can buy them and burn them, or see it on the big screen of which the schedules are available on www.21cineplex. com so that you can pull your hair out and scream at the screen.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Action, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy. Director: Harald Zwart. Writer: Jessica Postigo (screenplay), Cassandra Clare (characters, based upon the novel “City of Bones (Mortal Instruments)” written by). Cast: Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Jemima West, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Lena Headey.

Another film about some teen who finds out she has superpowers she never knew she had. This film follows a young teenage girl, Clary Fray, who after witnessing a murder at a crowded nightclub in downtown Brooklyn, begins to wonder about her true self because she is the only one who can see the murderer. However, Clary finally discovers a parallel world beneath the city surface, an ever-existent realm that she belongs to and that the murderer, her, and mother are Shadowhunters. In this Harald Zwart’s, who directed The Pink Panther 2 and The Karate Kid (both terrible movies), latest work. So yeah. We warned you.

Byzantium Drama, Fantasy, Thriller. Director: Neil Jordan. Writer: Moira Buffini. Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley, Jonny Lee Miller, Daniel Mays, Caleb Landry Jones.

Haunted and chased after by their vampire past, two immortal vampires – Clara (Gemma Arterton) and her daughter and ‘younger sister’, Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) hide in a coastal town where Clara transform a guesthouse named Byzantium into a brothel in order to survive on their customers’ blood. At the same time, Eleanor, a storyteller at heart befriends Frank, a person to whom she can confide in about her bloody origins. Directed by Neil Jordan (Interview with a Vampire), this sexy yet thrilling movie centers on the complicated mother-daughter relationship as they move from town to town feeding on blood. This film got mixed reviews, so if you love everything vampire and have low expectations (we’re looking at you Twilight fans), this could be a good time.

Mr. Go Action, Comedy, Drama. Director: Kim Yong-hwa. Writer: Kim Yong-hwa. Cast: Xu Jiao, Sung Dong-il.

A 285 kg circus-trained gorilla named Ling Ling lives in Sichuan, China with her owner Wei Wei. After a Korean sport agent called Sung sees with his own eyes Ling Ling’s remarkable batting skills, he gets Wei Wei to let Ling Ling play in the Korean Baseball League. Determined to be able to pay off the debts she inherited from her grandfather, she reluctantly agrees to move to Korea. Adapted from a famous Korean comic series, this film by Kim Yong-hwa (200 Pounds Beauty) uses a lot of special effects to create the digital gorilla. So this is about a gorilla playing baseball. A. Gorilla. Playing. Baseball. We’ll let that sink in.

Meja Jl. Laksmana, Seminyak-Bali T: 8466996 here is much more to Meja than its cool blue exterior and rather startling architecture. It is in fact a fabulous new addition to the delicious dining offerings along Jalan Laksmana and uber-hip Seminyak.

With a funky covered front courtyard, Meja is a welcoming resto with a tonne of beachside-style from its white washed wooden interior, cute and quirky trinkets, hip painted louvers and the clean lines of its large open kitchen. Then there are the mojitos. The Apple Strudel Mojito deserves its name with the freshness of the fruit combining subtly with cinnamon spices that is almost buttery plus a tasty little kick from the top shelf rum. But wait, there’s more. A Candied Coconut Mojito is topped with slivers of sweet and crunchy coconut flesh that is beautifully balanced with fresh lime juice, Malibu and rum. The cocktails are served in handled jam jars that reek of utility chic. Like the amazing Marshmallow Mojitos, I think we will be seeing more of these quirky cocktails and the containers at the copycat bars around town. Meja, which opened in February, has an interesting and extensive menu that bravely takes on global dining with dishes that include fusion Chilli And Lime Chicken Risotto that is rich with coconut and lemongrass, a modern take on a Seafood Melt with buttery white fish, calamari and prawn on a baguette finished with melted cheese, which proved to be a huge hit. Sous Chef Made Marsana has taken Balinese-style Pork Ribs and used a wicked sambal goreng to create a unique dish that is served with an excellent local veggie combo called coconut jukut urab.

104

www.beatmag.com

FOOD The menu has been designed under the watchful eye of Chef Brad Harrison who last appeared at Karma Batu Belig. He has developed some interesting items including Truffle Scented Mac & Cheese, Dukkah-Crusted Tuna and a sensational Pumpkin And Quinoa Salad that is a perfectly assembled dish of roasted pumpkin, delicate quinoa, pine nuts, crumbled feta and pumpkin seeds. This gem is far from the hippy vegan fodder that its name may conjure. All time favourites grace the menu. Pastas with prawns, mouth-watering New Zealand Beef And Chips with a twist of watercress puree, a Classic Beef Burger and a Vegetarian Burger stuffed with bocconcini, roasted peppers, eggplant, zucchini and pesto. There is also an impressive range of Asian comfort foods including a Fragrant Chicken And Prawn Laksa, Beef Rendang, Duck Confit Betutu and Hokkien Szechuan Chicken. Meja clearly attempts to bring pleasure to a range of tastes with a menu that is familiar but has the advantage of presenting other well-trodden recipes that have been carefully developed and recreated into signature dishes. The desserts are so huge they should come with a written warning. The Poached Pear and Mascarpone was topped with shortbread crumble, gelato and pear syrup that had the three of us diving into for more. If you are feeling inclined to a taste of bonny England, go for the Homemade Banoffee Tart with vanilla ice cream and crème Anglaise. A light touch has been given to the kid’s menu, which is cute and has a Sponge Bob theme and even offers a Krabby Patty. The offspring can be kept busy colouring the menu and working on the thoughtfully included puzzles. The non-alcoholic homemade sodas are creative and delicious. Try the thirst quenching fresh ginger and rosemary lemonade or the pine and star anise soda. These are wonderful alternatives to dreary soft drinks. Meja is well positioned slightly off the street; the front courtyard acts as a bridge between the bustling traffic and tramping tourists outside making it a welcome haven from an exhausting Bali-shopping binge. Plans are underway to open a breakfast buffet to non-hotel customers. It has an all day menu, with a daily specials list and the dinner menu is focussed for the evening with a slightly contracted menu. An upstairs lounge bar is about to hit the scene soon and bar food will be available there on its Friday and Saturday nights of trading. Like the restaurant, the bar is a happy addition to the constantly changing face of Jalan Laksmana’s alter ego of ‘Eat Street’. (Ondy Sweet)

It is all about the fantastic food menu, the creative signature cocktails and the wicked rock bands that play there on the weekends. Mantra is always crowded and its hard to get a drink at the bar sometimes, so they created a new and exclusive second bar up the stairs called Mantra Loft, which serves some of the best drinks we’ve tasted. This time we got to try the Mantra Old Fashioned (150k).What the bartender did first was sauté some orange and rosemary with a blend of whisky’s called the mantra drip, after sautéing he starts to slowly stir Makers Mark Whisky with sugar and bitters and keeps adding whisky until the glass is full, he then adds the sautéed orange and its juices in and voila! You have yourself a real man’s drink with a slight orange kick to it. This drink is pretty strong, just the way we like it!

One of the more exciting parts of the menu is the innovative raw bar, where they have some of the freshest seafood dressed like you’ve never seen before. This is where we got to try one of their tastiest creations, the Coconut Marinated Salmon (120k). This dish is served with lemongrass, crushed peanuts, Ikura and crispy noodles. CD REVIEW

the civil wars

the civil wars

There’s nothing really new about duos who create beautiful music despite being on the verge of throttling each other, but how can it be that behind the infinite loveliness of Californian Joy Williams and Tennessee dandy John Paul White’s particular brand of Americana, there’s evidence of a band hanging together by a thread.

If reports on the band’s status are accurate, it’s a wonder that three years on from Grammy award winning debut Barton Hollow the self-titled second LP even made it to the mixing desk – the feuding pair having abruptly cancelled last year’s European tour mid way through with Williams citing; “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” White went even further and refused to do any interviews, but somehow they managed to keep it together to record the album, which crackles with a darker, rawer energy than the predominantly acoustic harmony of their debut. “The One That Got Away” and “I Had Me a Girl” open proceedings ominously with plenty of foot-stomping grit that will get the neck hairs standing to attention, White and Williams’ Southern holler illuminating tales of love and despair set to slide blues guitar, booming drums and the unlikely inclusion of an amplifier or two. From there, things settle down briefly with the hushed ditties of “Same Old Same Old” and “Dust to Dust”, before swinging back again to the sinister “Devil’s Backbone” and the deceptively sweet sounding “Oh Henry”, who apparently better watch his step: “I know you wouldn’t hurt me/we don’t need one more grave in this town,” trills Williams defiantly. Further evidence of the apparently crippling animosity is made uncomfortably plain on a couple of videos released on their Vevo channel. Littered with awkward looks and stolen scowls across the room, the tension is palpable and yet the music remains as effortlessly stunning as ever. It’s all rather confusing considering just how well those voices work together, weaving around each other, neither one outshining the other and both frequently finishing the other’s sentences; “I will pray,” begins Williams – “pray, pray” adds White – “to the one I love” finishes Williams again on the joyously bluegrass “From This Valley” in a perfect example of the kind of exchange that characterizes the album. Contrary, uncomfortable, raw yet ultimately life affirming, The Civil Wars is all of those things and then some - if Williams and White manage to overcome those “irreconcilable differences of ambition” then it will be fascinating to see where they go next. Dan Ashcroft is feuding with his alter ego.

-year-old Brooklyn based contemporary artist Bennet Schlesinger has recently caught our eye and as it appears captured the Modern Art world’s interest too. It’s hard to narrowly define the humble Schlesinger’s artistic approach with a particular style; it’s minimalistic, conceptual, energetic, layered and beyond all very intriguing. Both a painter and a sculptor, Schlesinger has also recently lent his talents to a bit of furniture making too. Schlesinger was recently part of the Artist in Residence program at Deus, exhibiting in his solo show ‘The Vertigo of Hosts and Guests’ at their Temple Gallery with a series of small painted works. Although very simple and precise to look at, within each layer of brush strokes is an intricate aesthetic depth of thought from Bennet which is visible in much his painting and installation like sculpture works. Akin to most young creatives right now, Schlesinger keeps moving around while furthering his artistic adventures. SPA Look:

The spa is located right on Sunset Road and looks like a converted warehouse with a unique façade. The lobby is roomy and the deco modern, walking into the actual spa, you are greeted by a pavilion of six miniature standalone buildings within the building that are actually treatment rooms. At the back of the spa is a waiting room that overlooks the six treatment rooms. Stone is generously used and gentle LED lights have a soothing effect.

Feel:

Cocoon Medical Spa is not a place you go to get a massage, the core ethos of the establishment is to restore youth and maintain physical wellbeing. The treatments include diamond microdermabrasion, botox, non-surgical facelifts, laser rejuvenation, colonics, Jessner and Glycolic peels as well as hair removal and a bunch of other treatments. We tried the diamond microdermabrasion which is pretty much a little suction tube attached to a rough diamond head to exfoliate dead skin. It felt like a cat licking your face and we were given a cold gold mask in a salt room afterwards which felt great. The salt room was basically a room which resembled a square igloo, but instead of ice, the bricks were made of salt. A machine spread salt into the air as it is considered therapeutic to breathe in a little salt.

Ingredients:

The spa offers a variety of products that are tied to their treatment programs and seem pharmaceutical in nature. One key ingredient is the human one and all therapists at the spa are registered nurses which are trained by both British and Australian cosmetic doctors.

if you’re looking for tried and true age fighting treatments, cocoon medical spa just might be the place to reverse the clock.

Magic:

Cocoon Medical Spa seems to have it all in the way of beauty preservation and enhancement. We could probably fill in three pages of their treatments alone. The variety is huge. Jl Sunset Road (opposite McDonalds) T. 8475997 www.Cocoonmedicalspa.com

n a race to beat both the setting sun and his three rivals in the 30 minute final of the inaugural ASC sanctioned six-star Aceh International Surfing Championship 2013 recently, with just five minutes left on the clock West Java’s Dede Suryana found the wave he needed and blasted turn after turn to post the highest single wave score of the final, 7.27 points (out of a possible 10), to add to his previous 6.0 point score and overtake 2012 Indonesian and Asian surfing champion Raditya Rondi from Kuta, Bali, leaping into the lead that he held until the horn blew to win his first contest in almost two years. The final took place in waning daylight with pumping 3-4 foot waves, and finished up as the sun had already set over the Indian Ocean. Due to a change in the ferry schedule back to the mainland, the organisers put the word out the evening before that the contest must be finished by Friday night, so ASC Contest Director Tipi Jabrik had to get creative in order to finish up in time, which required eliminating the two man-on-man semifinals and going right into a four man final format. Finalist Garut Widiarta had been surfing very well up until the final, winning all of his heats convincingly but just seemed out of rhythm, failing to complete the aerial manoeuvers that he had been pulling off with regularity. Turns out he had injured his foot in

the quarterfinals while attempting an aerial, cutting his foot on his surfboard fin, which affected his final’s performance. West Javan Sandi Selamet was the youngest of the finalists and put on a worthy display for his well-deserved third place finish, charging both right and left waves with equal ferocity. After today’s event, the ASC 2013 rankings has Raditya Rondi in the first place, followed by Garut Widiarta, Tipi Jabrik, Dede Suryana, and Putra Hermawan rounding out the top five. A total of 24 surfers joined in the inaugural Aceh International Surfing Championship, the majority from Indonesia (Bali, West Java, Banda Aceh, and Simeulue) but also included an Australian, an American, and a South African surfer. FEATURES and tasty fare. For higher-end dining Seminyak is also the place to be with some of the best dining in the world on offer. Try KUDETA and their new Mejakawi restaurant, The Legian, La Luciola, Baba’s, W’s Starfish Bloo, Merah Putih, Sarong, Metis and Sardine along Jl Petitenget and then Warisan and Mama San along Jl Kerobokan and you won’t be disappointed. The aforementioned Gado Gado and Anantara, and La Sal Spanish restaurant and grill on Jl. Drupadi are also worth a visit.

you have just arrived in Bali for the first time and you are wondering what to do. Here’s a general guide of the nightlife options you can find around Seminyak.

So

Seminyak is the more laid back part of South Bali. It’s north of Kuta and was originally the area inhabited by the European expats frequenting Bali’s shores. They brought with them the new electronic sounds and European dining. Now it’s a growing metropolis where you will find all the best that the world has to offer from food, shopping and nightlife. Sunset starts the action. Try the restaurants on the Double Six/Blue Ocean strip for the hubbub of racket ball playing Euros and the buzz of the beach scene. The restaurants are good enough and the price right. Try Blue Ocean, Lanai and Zanzibar for easy on the pocket or Deja’vu and Cocoon for upmarket. Move along the beach north and get a seat at La Plancha or the myriad beach side cafes until along that stretch. Cheap beers, food, and what a lot of people coming to Bali are looking for, will be found along this stretch. Gado Gado and SOS Anantara offer more refined dining and cocktails. Sunset is also good at Kudeta, Potato Head Beach Club and W Retreat’s Woo Bar with DJs pumping the tunes and great dining in the Petitenget area.

So now you’ve had something to eat, it’s time to look for the nightlife. Early discounted drinks are available at Rumours and The Deck at Semara from 10pm. The Meja bar upstairs has DJs most nights and Soho across the road has live music on Wednesday nights. The Red Carpet Champagne Bar at the beginning of Jl Laksmana is a popular spot, busy most nights. KUDETA has DJs spinning every night in a more relaxed environment. Hu’u Bar has regular guest DJs most weekends and is normally very busy. Potato Head is always packed from sunset till midnight with electronic sounds. Mantra is good for dining and regular live and DJ music for the more surfie hipster crowd. Mint is the perfect venue for people craving some house beats and always busy from Thurs to Saturday nights. Woo Bar at W Retreat is next with electronic music every night and regular guest DJs. Eatoss is further up Jl Petitenget and has some good food and a nice back music room. Metis features a cool Friday evening gathering with discount drinks in their spacious bar area. Back down to the beach on Jl Batubelig you can find another beach club and fine dining experience in Mozaic Beach Club.

Nightlife in Seminyak

As the sun sets and the tummy rumbles it’s time to find some food. ‘Eat Street’ or Jl. Laksmana in Oberoi/Petitenget is the place to set your sights. The entire street is full of great food and at a great price. The pick of the bunch are Ultimo, multiple winner of the best restaurant in The Beat Awards and always packed, Trattoria also a good Italian, Rumours for the young crowd, Bistro Batu Kali for the families, and many more like Bistrot, Soho, Meja, Cafe Bali, Khaima and The Junction – all good value

There are other spots worth checking in Seminyak for dining and nightlife too like Made’s Warung on Jl. Raya Seminyak for an authentic Bali experience. And for the alternative scene one can’t go past the bars and clubs of Jl Dhyana Pura where everything you desire if that way disposed will be lined up along the strip. Straighter bars can also be found along there with JP’s Warung offering all kinds of food options and late night clubbing at Maria Magdalene from Wednesday to Saturday nights from midnight. Or Santa Fe still pulls a crowd looking for live music and Bahiana for a casual few drinks. Cocoon back on Double Six beach also offers electronic music most nights around their outdoor pool area. When it gets late, and you are still bursting with energy, the best option is a move to Pyramid on the edge of Seminyak on Jl Dewi Sri which is open till late with house and progressive beats and after that to the all night Deejay Club down in Kuta Centre, Jalan Kartika Plaza, Kuta. Have fun discovering Seminyak.
