It has been a strange journey so far for the Miss World 2013 contest being held in Bali this month. When it was first announced last year all the news indicated the event was going to be held in Bali. Later we discovered that the final, the only part of the contest that would be going live on TV’s around the world, was being held in the Sentul Convention Centre in Bogor, south of Jakarta. A preliminary, almost consolationary, series of photo shoots would be taking place in Bali. It seemed Jakarta had kidnapped the event without telling anyone. But it appears they forgot where they were and who actually rules cultural and social events in Jakarta nowadays, namely the FPI or Islamic Defenders Front. After disrupting the scheduled Lady Gaga event in Jakarta last year they have now created more disillusionment in regard to the Miss World pageant in an apparently secular country that is Indonesia. As we go to press, the event final is still mildly up in the air as logistical problems are still being faced by the embattled organisers to find accommodation, venues, etc. The timing is also problematic as the APEC Summit fast approaches creating an already overloaded Nusa Dua, but we can safely say that the people of Bali are all right behind the organisers to make this a great success in every way. May it be a great success for Bali and Indonesia. Over the next two weeks there are once again a load of events on around town. Green School’s Soulshine Festival The two-day Soulshine Festival will be held at the world-renowned Green School Bali on December 27 and 28. The event will feature the legendary Micheal Franti and the highest positive vibrations in music, environmental-themed talks, and inspiring children’s activities. The music and environmental festival is dedicated to sustainability for Bali and the world and will benefit Bumi Sehat, natural birthing clinics in Bali and Aceh. SCOOP Hard Rock Cafe’s 20th Anniversary This October with BMTH and Crossfaith Sheffield, UK five-piece metalcore band – Bring Me the Horizon will come to Bali and headline the 20th anniversary of Hard Rock Cafe on October 14. The group which consists of front man Oliver Sykes, guitarist Lee Malia, bassist Matt Kean, drummer Matt Nicholls, and keyboardist Jordan Fish has just released their fourth album entitled Sempiternal and recently snatched the title of the Best British Band at the 2013 Kerrang! Awards. Veteran Balinese sailor and four time Olympic champion win medals for environmental stewardship. The Bali Waterman’s “Blues for the Blue” Benefit Night was held on Saturday night, August 31 at the Tapeo Gastro Bar in Kuta. The event was a night to unite and honour inspirational individuals who play an important role in protecting Bali’s oceans, reefs, beaches, rivers, waterways, ecosystems and marine wildlife as well as mentors for children in the marine environment. The Waterman Life Inspiration Award was proclaimed as a draw between Oka Sulaksana (olympic champion windsurfer) and Pak Made Monoh (water adventurer and sailor). Pak Monoh is famous throughout the coastal fishing communities as someone who has spent more time at sea than on land. Through ticket sales, raffles and auctions at the event, funds will contribute towards these educational programs to help to alleviate poverty and environmental degradation. A big thank you to the nominees, award winners, attendees, sponsors, and event organizers for contributing to this overall successful and positive event.
International Award for Indonesian Whisky PT. While being far away geographically from China, Australia’s electronic version of the dish is only served loud. Peking Duk is a DJ duo made up of two Canberra natives, Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles. The two began performing together after high school at clubs and parties, Adam who used to be a rapper in a hiphop group and Reuben who used to be in an indie rock band created their own recipe of electro house and mellow beats.

Their 2012 single entitled “I Love To Rap” featuring Panama Black reached ARIA Top 10 club chart for a steady period of four weeks. Next, they remixed Passion Pit’s “Take A Walk” which hit with six digit views upon its release. Peking Duk has received big-time support from many great DJs and musicians such as Tiësto and Steve Aoki amongst others. Adam and Reuben have also played at events ranging from Parklife to Foreshore, and from Summer’s Stereosonic, Field Day to Falls Festival. Early this year, they were personally chosen by The Bloody Beetroots for the Big Day Out side show run. Their duk sauce has also spilled way into the Asian region and the US, with many incoming playing requests, especially after the release of their latest track “The Way You Are”. Recently this year, they were voted the In The Mix #5 DJ act.

With Big Day Out 2014 as their next major gig, their upcoming show in Bali should be a very appealing appetizer. They perform live at Sky Dome@Sky Garden on September 14.

Where you might have heard him
Apart from discovering the gratifying world of night clubs alone, Sebastian more often than not plays gigs with Roman Freihoff, another Munich DJ under the name Shik Stylkø and he is also in a project called Aerosoul (2) with another Munich DJ – Jerome Isma-Ae. They produced a 12” entitled “Rumors” in 2003. Before that collaboration, Sebastian dropped tracks co-produced with Werner Niedermeier (in K & N Project) and with his brother, Marcel Krieg (in T.K. Bros). It might come as no surprise that Sebastian took the German dance scene by storm with his two tracks under the name Búzios with “Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser” (2001) and “When I Close My Eyes” (2002). Sebastian’s passion for travel is supported by his international bookings, with many shows in cities like Hong Kong, Seoul, Jakarta, Amsterdam, London, Dubai, Antigua in the Caribbean, etc. His diverse residencies over the years have taken him to famous clubs like M1 Club (1995-2003), Pasha Munich, and four years of hosting the house-floor of Cocoon’s label night at Amnesia in Ibiza.

Sebastian is currently one of the most sought-after remixers in the world, however, at clubs; whether big or small, punters can expect him to play his originals. Hence, if you guys love house and progressive music, get to Pyramid on September 14 to see him live.

Growing up in the countryside of Hamburg, Germany, Till Von Sein was exposed to a great deal of hip hop, before calling Berlin home. While roaming through the northern German cities, Sein kept digging deeper into his soul and embedded it with a love of house music which was really booming in the 90s. Eventually, he gave up his own street wear shop which he had been running for seven years, an excellent decision indeed, to become a DJ.

Starting from scratch, Sein had his mates over at Berlin-based Suol imprint such as Aera, Chopstick, Tigerskin and Catz n Dogz is ready to infuse their tunes into Sein’s mixes as part of their collaborations. Talking about their most recent collaborations, it must be Sein’s debut full-length album entitled #LTD released in October 2011 which stands for ‘living the dream’. The only album he has to date kind of pays homage to his roots and musical background. While in the studio, he immerses himself into his remixing and new EP projects, while outside those routines, Sein hops around the world on tour playing his sets before a new and fresh audiences every weekend. Outside of music, he is the day-to-day agent for Clique Bookings for different artists. Next on his plan is releasing his much-awaited second mix CD on Suo.
Why see him
Sein is one of few prime examples of a fusion between passion and soul, as clearly depicted in his album. Maybe he’s not what people would call a Star DJ, but one thing is certain that he never lets any dance floor down. If you need solid proof, be present at Woo Bar on September 15.

Apart from coming on top in several DJ mixing competitions, DJ Ollie has been going places, mainly to Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and as far as Taiwan. His talent has made him an outstanding candidate for any major opening acts, and indeed, DJ Ollie had the honors to rip up the dance floor in concerts for numerous hip-hop outfits from Singapore and Malaysia like Urban Xchange, Triple Noize, Sleeq, Komrad, renowned Singapore rapper – Sheikh Haiqel, Too Phat, Ruffedge and Teh Tarik Crew. Hence, it came as no surprise that DJ Ollie opened the King of Crunk and purveyor of rap, Lil Jon’s concert in Singapore. He also founded an official DJ crew in Singapore called $upafellaz!, which consists of four other talented local DJs, two international DJs and one local hype-emcee. So far, they’ve been doing what they do best, which is keeping the dance floor hot and wild, especially at where DJ Ollie currently holds a residency, the Double O (Singapore).
Why see him
DJ Ollie Flip has done a fair share in redefining the hip-hop scene in Singapore and later around the region. While Bali has been on his crosshairs, this time he gets the chance to big it up at Eikon on September 18.

Kasey Taylor is one of Australia’s best electronic dance music exports. Starting to venture into the dance music scene at a tender age of 13, Melbourne-native Kasey has kept his sets diverse to keep distinguishing him from other branded music. One of his most notable achievements was spinning records for around eight hours straight, which set him apart as a man amongst other boys in the business. Today, Portugalbased Kasey still continues to step up his music despite already being a respected DJ himself.

Kasey’s true maiden voyage into the top positions came after brushing shoulders with big names like Sasha, John Digweed, Hernan Cattaneo, and the likes as part of his own ‘Mansion’ Saturday night party. On the international stage, he has been invited by John Digweed over in London for his Bedrock parties, headlined festivals like Two Tribes, Future Music Festival, Rainbow Serpent Festival, Summadayze in Australia, and so on. In 1997, Taylor, whose aliases include K Cee and Ocean Wave, launched his first label called Vapour Recordings which was followed by another imprint in 2008 called eVapour8, which focuses strictly on tech, house and everything in between. Their successes have earned them an enviable reputation, with remixes of works by Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Luis Junior, Jamie Stevens just to name a few. Even eVapour8’s first release – “Shorkel” by Miki Litvak &Ido Ophir, reached Beatport’s main Top 10 chart for over six weeks. Thereafter, a string of quality tunes with massive successes bestowed high praise for Kasey’s management.

LP I search for a collection of music put together by people who make the music I love. I then play those tunes to people who love dancing to this type of music in a place with very loud speakers, smoke machines and cool lights.
LP The amazing outdoor venues, the sweet bottle service and as cliche as it sounds, being able to have the opportunity to play at places where I can look up and see so many faces from different countries around the world enjoying the music that I love. This is something I could never take for granted.
RS I like to share music with friends, so being a DJ lets me share my music and it makes people dance. It is also lots of fun, and fun is good. In 2004 I was lucky enough to have great friends buy me a set of Vinyl turntables, which allowed me to become a DJ.
RS Being a DJ in Bali gives us the opportunity to play at some amazing world class venues. There is a strong appreciation for quality music here and definitely an underground movement that thrives on great parties away from the mainstream spotlight.

> 3. Everything you hate? LP 1. Downloading music whilst walking around holding my laptop in the air trying to get some sort of wifi connection. 2. Saying goodbye to this island when we leave. RS I can tell you there is not much I hate, except the drink prices sometimes hurt the wallet at the end of the night.
> 4. Tell us about your style, but tell it in the same way one would > describe a food recipe. LP A good chef never reveals his secret recipes. RS Take 2 x USBs Fill it with only the finest selection of deep and tech house tracks. Wack it in a blender. Mix it all together starting on a low setting. The ingredients will start to become fluid and groovy. Turn up the blender to medium. Add in some vodka and soda. Take 3 fresh lime and squeeze. The blender might start to sing which a good thing.
Finally add in 5 or 6 shots of Cafe Patron. Dance.
> 5. Tell us why we should go to your upcoming shows. LP Our last full moon party at Cocoon Beach Club was up there with my favourite gig ever on the island, such a great vibe. Im very excited for the next edition on Thursday, September 19th and to be able to play along side some great local talent in Danny Fry and The Pop Kids. It will also be your last chance to see Rob Sharp’s Ace Ventura look a like hair do before we go back to Australia. RS There will be plenty of up for it party people, DJs that want to make you dance and the drinks will be flowing.
> 6. How do you feel about this interview? LP Normally I would feel good about it but I’m on the Gili islands at the moment and to be honest I would rather be at the beach. RS I’m starting to feel thirsty.

This movie got marginally favorable reviews by critics, but combine the acting chops of Wahlberg and Washington, throw in some comedy and explosions, and this might just be a movie worth a few rupiah at the DVD shop.

Kick-Ass has returned in this long-awaited sequel to the 2010 film of the same name that brought rated R comedy gold to the screens. Hit Girl and Kick-Ass are two “superheroes” who are joined by a variety of other heroes including Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes. In opposition is the now orphaned Red Flame who has now dubbed himself the Motherf*cker and his gang of villains. We would go more into the plot, but I think this is enough. Expect the same cleverly done R-rated adolescent humour as the predecessor, which in our opinion, was probably the most fun we’d had watching a movie at that particular time.

The sweeping deck area provides the ultimate in panoramas, giving a seldom seen perspective of mainland Bali from any one of the tables, sofas or comfy day beds. High glass barriers safely ensure that you’ll take it all in wherever you sit, meaning that there can be few better sunset spots anywhere in Bali. Add in a top-drawer menu of grazing options and evening fare, and it starts to become clear why this place is already a favourite on the Bukit list.

A cocktail or two also never hurts when faced with comfy chillout sofas, and so my buddy and I order up a couple of the bartender’s recommendations before getting stuck into the menu; namely the Mojito and a Singapore Sling (both 110k). For starters we check out the superb Quesadillas (50k) and the refreshing Gazpacho Soup (80k). Feeling particularly hungry we also split a serving of the fantastic Nachos (50k) – everyone’s favourite sharing dish. For the mains it a tough choice, but eventually after much deliberating we order up the Gourmet Chicken and Chorizo Burger (90k) and the excellent Chicken Caesar Salad (90k). Both excellent examples of beautifully presented, crowd pleasing fare that is consistent with everything else on the rooftop menu.
The rooftop serves up snacking delights for late lunch and dinner, with an uncluttered, succinct menu that is nicely in keeping with the Harris hotel’s emphasis on fun and simplicity. Expect hearty pizzas, gourmet burgers and hot treats from the grill, as well as salads, bagels and snacks to tempt diners who like to share out the goods. Whether it be chilling out at sunset with friends, a romantic evening meal or a few preclub drinks, the rooftop suits all tastes and won’t break the bank. Walking out onto the breezy rooftop, it’s clear that a venue such as this is unique for the area, with most of the action happening down at street level. Up here though, it’s a different atmosphere, and with the bustle left far below it’s easy to slide into relax mode.
Jim’Bar’N is open every weekday from 3pm until 1am (10am on weekends for the brunch session) meaning that you can roll up in plenty of time for sunset and stick around for the afterhours session, where a troop of hot resident DJs spin the evening away while you get your cocktail fix on and soak up one of the best vistas on the island. The food is mostly centered around grilled barbecue and today we tried one of their best sellers. The crispy Pata (110k), which is fried pork knuckle and is a hefty, but is definitely tasty enough to be devoured in minutes. It consists of a deep fried pork knuckle with amazingly crispy skin, served with three different sauces: Balinese bumbu genep (complex Balinese spices mixed together), sambal kecombrang (raw chops of shallots, chili, torch ginger and kaffir lime with a little bit of virgin coconut oil), and sweet & spicy Thai sauce. Pickled turnip is also served as a condiment. This Filipino dish is rarely available in Bali and has already climbed its way to be Warung Sunset’s most loved food!

Born out of a stint in rehab, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is the moniker given to indie outfit Ima Robot’s frontman Alex Ebert’s hipster folk collective that, depending on who’s not busy with an art project or trawling vintage clothing stores, has a lineup of anywhere between 2-12 people who look like they have just stumbled off the set of The Old Grey Whistle Test. In order to more easily comprehend the band’s self-titled third LP, it’s worth noting that Edward Sharpe is also apparently the name of his dreadlocked alter-ego - a fictional messianic figure who, according to Ebert; “comes down to earth to help out but kinda gets sidetracked by girls and stuff”. Riiiiiight. Keen to position himself as far as possible from the stagnating indie scene of the City of Angels, Ebert and his Magnetic Zeros continue to delve into a distinctly obscure brand of folksy Californian nostalgia for album number three. The result is the kind of retro hipster jug-band jamboree that only just manages to rise above its own smugness, chiefly because the unique mashup of psychedelic folk and quirky melody is nothing if not a feat of originality. The formula works best on the 50 percent or so of tracks that were recorded nearly two years ago and almost ended up on last year’s altogether breezier Here. “In The Summer” plods along cheerfully enough, as does “Remember to Remember” with the effortlessly wonderful vocals of Jade Castrinos always a welcome addition. Songs like “When We’re High” and “When You’re Young” fizz with a general vibe of carefree happiness, full off throwaway hyperbole like: “There’s no protest when we’re high, they’re just songs”. Similarly, “If I Were Free” sounds like Dylan covering “Yellow Submarine”: “I felt the fear that every queer does in his head,” chirps Ebert cryptically, but for the other 50 percent, there is definitely a darker yin to the joyful yang. Newer material suggests Ebert is not as free from the temptation of addiction as he might like to be, manifested in the darker and more desperate sounding tracks “Two” and “Life is Hard” – the strained rasping of Ebert singing “and it’s killing you while you’re just trying to smile from your heart” or “I’ve been lying to myself” softened only marginally by Castrinos. The downside of this album is that it swings from light to dark too often, and lacks the cohesion of their two previous LPs. That said, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty to enjoy from this troubled ringleader and his merry band of hipsters. Dan Ashcroft is psychically judging your music collection. www.beatmag.com

Born in Sulawesi, Fakhruddin moved to Bali in 1967 and around this time he began to paint. iasa presents ‘Observations of the Self’ by visual artist Sara Nuytemans. This solo exhibition sees the gallery transformed into an experimental haven of contemporary art with seven interactive kinetic installations using reflective media, light and technology to create constellation like spaces for viewers to experience. Nuytemans draws inspiration from her rather in-depth fundamental questions of what our role as human beings is and why we are here. Her carefully constructed works create a series of revolving, rotational, vibrating and even distorted reflective media that allows the audience to capture themselves and their environment within her art. Part of the exhibition includes collaboration between Nuytemans and Biasa featuring bespoke mirrored footwear. he Bali Art Society is putting on the Bali Art fair which will feature 132 artists at three different venues starting on September 20. The three exhibitions will be held until October 5. The fair has been titled “Bali On the Move” and will present painting, sculpture, printmaking, p h o t o g r a p h y, installation and video art from both Indonesian and international artists. The carefully curated art will follow the traditions of Bali’s history. The galleries participating are Tony Raka Art Gallery in Ubud, and Maha Art Gallery and Danes Art Veranda in Denpasar. orn in Yogykakarta, 35-year-old Deonisus Dony Dwi Asmorojati developed an interest for hand drawing from a young age. He studied craft design at the Indonesia Art Institute before furthering his studies and talents in graphic design where he graduated at the Modern Design School in Yogyakarta. Dony’s work is found in various publications and mediums throughout Bali including Denpasar Cathedral magazine which he works very closely with. Asmorojati’s works are currently being exhibited at Insens’o as part of their new series the ‘Artist’s Corner’ featuring his own unique lamp designs. In his latest series Asmorojati has drawn inspiration from two contrasting ideas for his designs; one is the Legong Balinese dancer where he has explored the Balinese dance motion and created a minimalist geometric shaped lamp. His other creation is inspired by picture characters illustrating different emotions as if discussing a piece of art; this interesting concept of the artist provokes the viewer to understand how they become the subject of the ‘emotion’ they are looking at. The test of a true masseuse is in the intuitive connection with the guest and at Serenity, the massage was delivered in a caring and assured manner while also pinpointing areas of stress. Given a choice of a male or female masseuse, I chose the male, firstly as he was available but also sometimes men deliver a different massage and I am partial to it. From the list of treatments including a four hander called Cradle and Expand to hand and foot mapping and a great list of beauty rituals, I chose the Meridien Stress Release massage. This 60 or 90 minute massage begins with hot packs of herbal salts being placed on your back and a combination of thumb rolling across pressure points. Aimed at releasing the tension across the shoulders and lower back, this is an invigorating treatment.

Aiming to please a discerning and possible resort-exhausted crowd, this chic boutique resort goes the extra mile to create treatments using ingredients that are as intriguing as they are effective. If my masseuse was the standard by which to judge others, the magic here is in the staff or the training. The spa is luxurious and minimalistic yet comfortable and conducive to switching off. The staff however, went the extra mile, to find out what I did, how it might affect me physically and tailoring the massage to specific areas that are overworked and prone to tension. There were moments of discomfort that my masseuse sensed almost before his hands hit the spot. Polite and sweet, there was the sense that they will go the extra mile if possible to meet the needs of the client.

Everyone’s a Critic. E
ven in the most remote corners of the earth, it seems de rigeur to photograph every experience and particularly every meal. These days so many people have access to the media and are not shy about expressing their opinions. A recent anonymous review of a pub restaurant in the English countryside prompted the owner/chef to strike back. His response has won world-wide praise from chefs, owners and even the general public. The pub in question, the Baldebone Inn, doesn’t really matter in this context, the response however is indicative of current social mores where personal experience becomes the barometer of what is good and bad, and the experiences are made very public. What constitutes a critic? Professional food critics are mindful of the entire experience and while keeping in mind that one meal does not an experience make, a million things go into the mix.; atmosphere, staff and service, price, value, the background of the place, those running it, and personal expectations. Trip Advisor is the industry’s nightmare and the customer’s friend, or so they say in their efforts to be impartial. Close inspection of the reviews reveal that while some have rated the place as the best, others have slammed it. Who do you believe? In the end, the exercise is often rendered redundant as the views will vary so widely. For the hotel and restaurant industry, it’s a nightmare because people can say anything, and often trying to reply (if you have the time to constantly check) is an exercise in futility and the venue often comes off as being defensive. Professional critics and food writers are unfortunately almost a dying breed as the publications they write for rely on advertising and slamming a place will pretty much ensure they will never invest in the

publication again. It is only the most confident of chefs, owners and operators who will take the criticism on board and seek to improve. Most publications, frankly, only publish positive reviews as they exist in a competitive market and rely on the revenue. Who killed the critic one asks? The old days when critics would arrive under cover, their identity not known by the vendors, act as a paying guest and foot the bill at the end of the experience in order to write an unbiased review, are almost a relic of the past. Very few exist now. Perhaps, by the laws of nature, they have been replaced by Joe Public. However, it remains true, that if the reviewer has nothing good to say about the place, perhaps they were just having a bad day or the venue they chose was way out of their comfort zone and they should say so. The all-bad review really doesn’t have its place. So to all would-be reviewers, I have this small word of advice, try to balance the negative and positive if you really care about anyone taking notice of your opinion. Restaurants and resorts are like people, rarely ever completely bad. Put yourself in the shoes of the operator and try to achieve something positive with your review. If, in the case of the anonymous ranter who slithered into the above-mentioned pub in a quiet English village, the owner’s recants are true; that he was simply looking for a free meal, keep your inane opinions to yourself. The owner claims he has the whole dinner on CCTV and the guy ate all the food and was thoroughly unpleasant to everyone. Who’s right, who knows? But if we are all going to be critics, we also have to take a little responsibility for the words we share.
