FOOD Stop The Plastic Delivery

We have seen the rise of takeaway food create a very high level of convenience, but is it really all that good for the community? At first, Bali’s relationship with takeaway (bungkusan) was purely organic, either banana leaves or paper but we have seen a huge rise of takeaway food ever since the conception of food delivery from restos and apps like GoJek and Grab that has resulted in lots of plastic packaging and it’s about time to take action. With Bali’s recent ban on singleuse plastics it is a great time to start re-adjusting the way we eat and think about how to eliminate plastic from our day-to-day. Here’s a suggestion; go to the restaurant! However, there are more and more restaurants using eco-friendly packaging, so look out for them and support businesses that are trying to better the island!

SVÁ bali

It’s all about tasty Indonesian bites and killer electronic beats at the newly opened SVA! Less than five minutes from Berawa Beach, Sva is a three-storey building with a restaurant on the second floor and a bar on the third. They offer Indonesian tapas style dishes made to share around the table – from their Fisherman Sate, Pia Pork Rendang to the vegan-friendly Lawar Kacang and Karedok. Expect authentic tastes with a modern twist. Their bar serves up Indonesian inspired cocktails as well as exciting re-arrangements of classics, and you can enjoy these drinks to the electronic sounds of DJs at night!

Sake No Hana

Next Level O

mnia Dayclub has taken Bali by storm since opening in February last year. It’s quite simple to see why as the design, styling, finishing and service are all ticked off with a total Wow! When you walk in, it’s not just the venue that feels like a million dollars, but it makes you feel like it too. There’s something about Omnia that makes you feel like you are at the top of the world, you have arrived, you are at the peak of the summit, no less. Maybe it’s that crystal, metallic cube sitting there in what seems mid-air that also helps to take it to that next level.

Standing over proceedings in a very Alila-like structural statement, is Omnia’s destination, fine dining restaurant, Sake No Hana. Sake No Hana features contemporary Japanese cuisine, the name means sake flower, and as you would expect, the restaurant has the most extensive selection of sake in Bali. It also has a wonderful range of cocktails. Japanese, being a cuisine so stylish, well-designed and especially healthy, had to be the perfect choice for this exemplary location and restaurant. The dishes are all intricately thought out and presented by Chef Hendry and his talented team.

So, what kind of cuisine would you expect to find in such a place? Only the best, of course. In the day club area there is some very well presented and tasty fare of the more casual variety that you would expect in a day/beach club, but since we are in this very special place there is more.

The simplest way to enjoy what Sake No Hana has to offer is to try their set menu. Both at lunch and dinner the SIGNATURE OMAKASE set menu (Rp 850k per person) is available and features a selection from all parts of the menu. A Top 40 list you could say from miso to sashimi and sushi to seared salmon

58

www.thebeatbali.com

FOOD and marbled wagyu beef. Delectable, as it is handy, giving all the decisions of what to eat to the well experienced chefs and leaving you to enjoy the majestic view and delightful tastes. There is also a premium selection menu that goes for Rp 1.2 million. My partner and I decided splash out totally and go for our own selection, starting with salty Edamame (50k), which was followed quickly by the Hamachi Namawasabi (295k). That’s a thinly sliced yellowtail sashimi with truffle black pepper ponzu poured over the top by the server, and slices of seared Australian wagyu tataki marble 8 (270k), with a sesame dressing (both pictured left). We sat next to the edge overlooking the day club below and the Indian Ocean in the distance. This visit was around sunset, during the festive season and every day bed and cabana space below was taken. A tomato salad (110k), with burnt heirloom tomato on a bed of smoked aubergine, baby cucumber and ginger soya dressing came to the table next and the creativity was bursting out in this normally simple salad. The mains; Gindara Mirin with Kanzuri Miso (480k), a delicious piece of mirin-marinated black

cod with yuzu chili miso sauce, and a thick sliced Australian Wagyu Sumiyaki Beef Marble 7 (750k), wagyu striploin with garlic ponzu. As my partner commented, the tangy ponzu sauce featured a lot in the Sake no Hana dishes. Sushi rolls were the final part of the mains and came with a difference. The chef prepared a special platter of three maki rolls (photo above); Wagyu Beef Maki. Middle, Salmon Prawn Tempura Roll and The Crispy Tuna Truffle Maki. All very inventive and such a great combination of maki rolls. From there we finished with a couple of awesome Sake No Hana desserts. A stick of ‘Bamboo’ (120k) with mandarin slices, white chocolate case and sesame mousse, and the green tea based Toto Matcha (140k), cherry, lychee, matcha parfait (Left). That was a delicious finale to a spectacular Japanese dining experience. A trip to Omnia Dayclub is fantastic in its own right, but becomes truly next level with a lunch or dinner at Sake No Hana. Enjoy. [SDW]

Sesame Cold Brew

Barman?

Barman: Villa Woobar is not only a good place to spend your mealtime and have a party under the sun or late into night, it’s also a good place to have a stylish drink as they have an extensive selection of inventive drinks to offer. One of their favourites recommended to us by Villa, the Head Mixologist at W Bali - Seminyak, is “Sesame Cold Brew” (135K). Created as a response to the beverage trend of the Espresso Martini. Like no other, this beverage comes with a twist that makes it more fun and eye catching compared to the usual Espresso Martini. This sweet cocktail is a mix of light rum, Frangelico, cold brew coffee and vanilla. Garnished with a sesame ice-cream stick and dirty oreo, this drink is surely a cocktail, coffee and dessert that will satisfy your sweet tooth and every need. www.thebeatbali.com

he serenity at SugarSand is enough to make you want to lounge at the beachside restaurant all day long. Whether it’s the laid-back vibes and staff or the comfy birds nest chairs and sunken lounges in the infinity pool, this is the ideal spot to un-wind with the sound of waves in the forefront and jazzy tunes in the background. The gourmed magic starts when delving into their fusion styled Japanese/Peruvian cuisine known as Nikkei. The cuisine that incorporates traditional Peruvian ingredients and Japanese style cooking. SugarSand has taken this exciting cuisine and added its own special twist, bringing locally sourced Balinese ingredients to the mix! As we entered from the glamorous beachside entrance, we were welcomed by the attentive reception girl and seated promptly. One look at the menu had my mouth watering. I’m a sucker for Japanese and anything fusion or experimental, and the combination of Peruvian flavors and Japanese style dishes is something

FOOD

I hadn’t tried before and was excited to feast! We kicked off with an incredible Soft-Shell Crab Maki (95k) roll that was a total flavor bomb, alongside the Tuna Nikkei Ceviche (90k) – a delicious introduction to this new cuisine. We continued with some cocktails dubbed Big in Japan that consisted of a Dashi Mary (140k), an edgy interpretation of the classic Bloody Mary with a bold Japanese twist and the Shogun Milk Punch (140k) – a blend of sake, black tea, goji berry and milk, making for a unique Japanese rendition. We carried on with some Anticucho Skewers from the Robata Grill, with favorites like the Gandira Cod (60k) and Beef Hanger (60k) sitting very well and really showcasing the versatility of the Nikkei Cuisine. We added a plate of Loaded Flat Breads in which we opted for the BBQ Beef (145k), a soft pizza-like bread that is jam-packed with Peruvian essence. Moving onto the mains, we chose the tender 250g Black Angus Rib Fillet (350k) with chayote, tempura leeks, red miso chili and paired that with something from the wok. The Yakisoba (180k) consisting of tiger prawns, noodles, green onions, chili and pickled ginger.A top selection of dishes if you are in the Double Six area.

To end things with a sweet touch we had our coffee with some Matcha Financiers (85k) and the Salted peanut & chocolate truffles (85k). Not to mention a cheeky little Elevation (160k) cocktail to send us off with a bang! SugarSand

MUSE

Simulation Theory Having well and truly settled into their role as space-rock stadium fillers three or four albums ago, all the Teignmouth trio now need to do to maintain their trajectory is to keep releasing ever-more outlandish albums that sound like they’ve been beamed in from Mars. Simulation Theory – their eighth - fits the mold perfectly, from the opening bars of “Algorithm” and its faux-baroque vocals through to the mini rock-opera closer “The Void”. Equal parts Radiohead, Queen and Ludwig Van Beethoven, eccentric frontman Matt Bellamy & co. are a refreshing change from most of what passes for modern ‘rock’ – utilizing all manner of digital and analog instruments that are all cranked up to top volume for the ultimate, speaker busting bombast.

Trouble is, the theatricals here (and on the last few albums) are often nothing more than a smokescreen that, once blown away, reveals songs that actually don’t stack up to much in terms of listenability. Simulation Theory does have its moments (Thought Contagion, Propaganda) but by the time proceedings are wrapped up there’s precious little to remember. In true Muse style it will of course all be fantastic live – you can totally imagine the fireworks display that’ll be accompanying “Blockade”, but listening to Simulation Theory in your living room rings curiously hollow. That’s not to say the spectacle of the music or Bellamy’s falsetto is not enormous fun though - just keep your good glassware away from the speakers. Dan Ashcroft

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

This is a time of increased psychological understanding, intimacy, and perhaps accumulation of wealth if you manage your resources well. This is an excellent time to work on financial planning and strategy. Your ability to understand and accept anything that is deep in meaning or significant is enhanced now. It’s time to let go of some of your fears that you are not doing enough, to develop more compassion and understanding of others, and to be humble, feeling safe in the knowledge that you (and others) are not perfect. Favorable Dates : 14, 15, 23 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

It’s a time when the need for progressive change suddenly becomes apparent. You might take risks and can open yourselves up to new ways of thinking now. However, you could also too easily avoid taking responsibility for things that truly matter. You are open to new energies, approaches, and attitudes. Fortunate events occur as a direct result of your willingness to entertain the unusual and to think outside of the box. Relationships are intense, serious, and changeful, but also extremely rewarding. Depth in your connections is what you seek. Favorable Dates 12, 16, 21, Favorable Colors : Blue&Red

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You might become more intellectually curious now, and academic pursuits are likely to benefit you and run smoothly during this cycle. Business dealings, particularly long-distance ones and those involving publicity and promotion, are likely to be profitable now. You may have opportunities to travel, study, go abroad, expand your horizons, and meet people who are of diverse backgrounds. You are more capable of helping friends and loved ones who are dealing with a crisis–you can be leaned upon. You are also more credible and reliable, which others appreciate. Favorable Dates : 10, 11, 19 Favorable Colors : Yellow &White

Career matters, while they might begin rather sluggishly in the first few days, are approaching a very pleasant peak. Building your skills and expanding your reach are very advisable now, as they will benefit you greatly as you move towards an especially successful period in your life. There are likely to be some pressures on the home front, but also opportunities to really get your domestic life into order. Educational and travel opportunities expand your horizons.Intimate relationships can be highly colorful, perhaps with spiritual undercurrents, but possibly a little confusing. Favorable Dates : 11, 12, 20 Favorable Colors : White & Black

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

Your mind is more expansive and tolerant, and you are under less stress than usual. You are more intellectually curious, and you may have opportunities to travel, study, go abroad, expand your horizons, and meet people who are of diverse backgrounds. You are less inclined to sweat the small stuff. These positive circumstances won’t necessarily fall into your lap, and are unlikely to come all at once. You need to keep your eyes open for opportunities in these areas of life. Family matters are stabilized and actually a source of great pleasure, joy, and increase. Favorable Dates : 14, 22, 23 Favorable Colors : Yellow &Red

This can be a time of sudden insights and opportunities for emotional renewal or healing that give you a sense of power and self-mastery. Opportunities arising now can be exciting, but do keep your eye out for the future and do consider the practical side of any new endeavor. Romance, creative pursuits, children, and partnerships may be involved in the process that jolts you out of your routine in this period. Your ego may be a little frail at this point, and, as a result, you may be harder on yourself than you need be. Favorable Dates : 11, 13, 20 Favorable Colors : White & Purple

70

www.thebeatbali.com

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

You are less inclined towards a personal philosophy that is traditional now, and more attracted to more avant-garde or simply progressive belief systems. The people that you meet in this period tend to stir you into new ways of thinking. ART

Coming Home: Momentary Lapse Now- January 28th Komaneka Fine Art Gallery After more than 20 years of adventure in Yogyakarta, now is the time for Palguna to get his feet back on the land of Gods, Bali. The artist, born in Ubud in 1976, is currently holding a solo exhibition entitled “Coming Home: Momentary Lapse” which showcases his 20 paintings and five statues made in 2018. In Komaneka Fine Art Gallery, Palguna’s work speaks in light and simple imagery, but actually embraces a high degree of complexity. The intelligence of the artist is in expressing a complicated sense of his presence again in his homeland with a language that appears harmonious. Criticism, protest and anger are packaged onto a poetic surface. Jl Monkey Forest, Ubud

Happy Ending Now- January 31st Maya Sanur Maya Sanur is once again giving the opportunity for Bali’s local artists to rise by presenting a group exhibition, Happy Ending. The exhibition which presents the works of eight young artists is framed inside one curatorial theme that is universal and spacious called “happiness”. Happiness is subjective depending on each individual. Therefore, the works displayed inside this exhibition are showcasing various kinds of interpretations and visual expressions responding to this theme. The artists are challenged to dig up the value and visual points that are closely related to the cultural aspects of Bali which resulted in artworks full of bright and dark colors with the modern touches of today’s painters. ART

A.A ISTRI RATIH APTIWIDYARI Ratih, born in 1997, is a young artist residing in Ubud who has lived her life surrounded by various artistic influences including her grandfather, who is a traditional painter. Her surroundings had led her to grow a strong fondness towards art, ever since she was in kindergarten. Her supportive family took part in her achievements as a young female artist and helped her join many group exhibitions leading to awards from various competitions. Watch her grow as she finds out her true identity as a painter in her current exhibition “Happy Ending” at Maya Sanur until January 31st How did your journey in art start? Since I was a little girl, I often saw my grandfather paint his artwork. He’s the one who influenced me the most. When I was in kindergarten, I participated in a coloring competition held by an art studio in Ubud and I won 1st place. Since then, almost every Sunday, I participated in painting or coloring competitions in Denpasar, and won several times. The most memorable thing was during the time of the Bali bombing and Sanur painter association held a painting contest. The winner’s painting was to be auctioned for the Bali bombing victims, and it turned out that I got the 1st place and my painting was auctioned. Fast forward, I entered junior high school with a major in modern painting, then continued to college where I took a major in art education at Undiksha, Singaraja.

What do you paint? I present works that contain my interpretations of various stories or folktales, especially Tantri stories that I know, and are often told from generation to generation since I was little. I present and interpret each character from the storyline with palette techniques. You’ll find a bit of fauvism in my artworks since my paintings use bright contrasting colors, and colors that are not natural. How about the paintings in the Happy Ending exhibition? In responding to the theme of “Happy Ending” I tried to see various values in a Tantri story. Many noble values about human life symbolized by animals. For example, my painting of the Pedanda Baka character. The story of a heron disguised as a priest who pretends to be the savior of fish from the dangers of drought in a pond. The message presented in the story of Pedanda Baka is that in life, we sometimes will see human behavior that tends to justify any means including cheating and sacrificing the happiness of others in order to reach their own happiness. Any advice for your fellow female young artists? I would like to remind other women who choose their path in art to always keep the gentleness that was born with you. Try to apply the female characteristic while you are exploring your own. Instead of comparing your capabilities with men, you need to remember that women have certain powers that men don’t. Lastly, always be productive!

LOOK In a cozy nook of Kuta Paradiso Hotel, Kuta, you will find a sanctuary to indulge yourself in a calming session of treatments in their Jalanidi Spa. While we head to our treatment room, we are greeted by the harmony of nature and culture as the spa interior combines a greendominated interior, which represents Bali’s lush nature, and the traditional wooden and stone furniture of Indonesia. Jalanidi spa houses three couple rooms with bathtubs and showers, as well as five single rooms, all named after tropical flowers. FEEL Out of their extensive menu of rejuvenating treatments, we choose to enjoy their 60 minute Balinese Massage (IDR 544K nett). Prepping us for the massage, the treatment started with a ritual foot bath with lavender salt scrub to exfoliate the dead skin cells. Soon after we laid on the massage bed, our therapist began the massage with gentle pressure across the back of the body and legs. Afterwards, with their aromatherapy oil, the massage moved into a firm combination of stroking, pressing and gliding movements. With a naturally intuitive touch, the treatments will help us to increase blood flow and oxygen to deeper tissue. The effects of the long palm pressure stroke included in the massage will leave us feeling calm and content. As the final touch,

the treatment ended with a an intense yet relaxing shoulder and head massage. To freshen up our body, a cup of ginger tea was offered after the treatment. INGREDIENTS For their various treatments, Jalanidi Spa offers three variations of coconut based oil that help soothe mind and soul during the treatment. The options are Revitalizing Oil that mix mandarin orange and jasmine, Energizing Oil that mixes ginger and lime, and Relaxing Oil that has a coffee essence. Meanwhile, the scrubs include Green Tea, Strawberry and Coffee. MAGIC Jalanidi Spa offers a variety of wellorchestrated treatments inspired by the rich Indonesian heritage.
