ere we are again with another public holiday to kick back to. Happy Easter to all those who celebrate it and happy long weekend for those who get to enjoy it regardless. As we’ve chatted about in the past, there’s a significant gap in the live band scene when it comes to venues and international acts hitting our shores. There are however, a few people doing their best to pull them through and this fortnight sees some great shows with Kultiration from Sweden, Ganga Giri from Oz, Afro Moses from Ghana and others playing at the Bali Spirit Festival, while electro-clash artist Peaches will be hitting SOS for a solo show. All well worth checking out. On the national front though, there are plenty of bands going from strength to strength and this fortnight sees Jamrud back in town with their new vocalist at Hard Rock Café. We also continue zoning in on some up-and-coming rockers in our feature series ‘On the Rise’. As for DJ’s, are we ever lacking in high quality acts? Check out our HereNow section for the next wave of dance floor motivators, including an interview with Aussie duo Bag Raiders. Keep smiling and enjoy those eggs… Cracker Here are some comments from our VIP card readers who read the magazine: I love two sections the most. One is the restaurant reviews. Since I’m a little older, and don’t go out to the nightclubs, I tend to come to Bali for relaxing, either by the pool or Seminyak beach and also to go out to a nice restaurant. Through your site, I’ve been informed of some very nice restaurants. In fact I’m thinking of going to CUPMANIK as your latest Beat mag had an article on it. Second, I like the “THERE THEN” section. Even though I don’t go out ‘til late, I do enjoy some live music and a good whiskey, so I get ideas about where to visit through your website. I also read HaloBali and Baru di Bali before any trip to your lovely island.

Bag Raiders

After sneaking out of school orchestra practice to smoke cigarettes together, DJs Chris Stracey and Jack Glass have moved onto more productive habits, forming a DJ duo who have now made huge waves worldwide thanks to singles like ‘Fun Punch’ and ‘Turbo Love’ getting major radio rotation. Now they’re heading to Bali to let their combined electro efforts out of the bag at Anantara. We got some chat time in with Jack… Tell us how the two of you first met and what led to the decision to work together… Actually we hung out a bit in school but weren’t exactly best buddies. We used to sneak out of orchestra practice and smoke cigarettes together but that was about it. It wasn’t ‘til a few years out of school that we started hanging out on the reg. We found we had pretty similar tastes in music and we started making music together on the computer. Were there any long term expectations to begin with or did the success glue you together for a longer ride?

044 | beatmag.com

Nope, no expectations at all to begin with. The first few things we did were just dumb little bootlegs and blends. We gave ‘em to our friends in the Bang Gang and they’d play them at the club. I guess you could say success glued us together. But then again we’re pretty good buddies too. So if we were still stuck making bootlegs in Ableton on a shitty old computer we’d probably still be hard at it anyway. When it comes to writing and production how do you distribute the work? We’re pretty much an even split on this, although we have started writing separately a bit more in the last

But even when we do this we’ll always take the idea into the studio and mess with it, produce it, polish it up together. Have you learned to respect each other’s space when it comes to spending so much time together or have all your bad habits blended into one? Haha. Probably our bad habits have blended into one. We’re both pretty easygoing guys. We never fight about anything. So we’re pretty lucky in that respect. But it’s true, we spend a lot of time together - studio during the week, touring on the weekends. Can’t imagine being in a band where everyone hated each other, I’d probably end up going insane. As the single ‘Fun Punch’ continued to get smashed across the airwaves, did you feel it pull you both in a different direction to what you had originally intended? Did expectation from that single affect your decisions for any following recordings? No, not so much. It was more ‘Shooting Stars’ I think that made us go, “hey, we wanna write more pop songs”. ‘Fun Punch’ seemed like a pretty logical and even progression from the stuff we were doing at the time, like the other remixes and stuff. Have there been any significant mentors for the two of you as your career and skills have developed? No, we tend to figure things out for ourselves. There’s a really good scene in Sydney right now where all the bands are really friendly and help each other out listening to tracks, swapping keyboards, that kind of thing. But I think Chris and I pretty much worked out what we know now just by mucking around together in the studio. I guess that’s probably why it took us a few years to get any good at what we were doing. But it also probably helped us hone in on our own sound and work out ways of doing things that we liked the sound of. What have been the biggest highlights of the past year? Well the touring’s been lots of fun. Also, working on the album and getting it to the point now where it’s in touching distance of being finished. Maybe you could say the biggest highlight - finishing the album - hasn’t come yet. But hopefully it’s just around the corner.

046 | beatmag.com

Had either of you travelled a lot before touring the world as DJs? Which countries have made the biggest impression on you in terms of ‘out-there’ experiences? Yeah we have both travelled quite a lot. It’s something we both love doing and one of the main reasons we get such a buzz out of touring. Outside of Bag Raiders the place I probably got the most out of was India. Amazing country, can’t wait to go back. On tour I’d have to say the highlight was Japan. Again, can’t wait to go back. Any major freak outs on the road? We did a pretty hectic, non-sleeping, totally disorganized, one month tour of the US. So you could say that was pretty much a one month freak-out. Loads of fun though... Where would you say the Sydney scene is at now? A good place for new acts to be born or a tough breeding ground for people trying to break through? I think it’s a good place to be. The club scene is a little strange right now. But the bands and labels that are here are great. I think the dudes at Modular and the Bang Gang dudes too, have really forged a scene here over the last 5 years or so, and it’s good to be a part of it. Plans for Bali? Been here before? Impressions? Eating, eating, eating. Can’t wait! Yeah I’ve been to Bali but not for a long time. I’ve been to Java a bunch of times too. Love it. And Chris has been in and out of Bali non-stop over the past few years. What are you looking forward to biting down on in the near future? Nasi Campur Last words? More sambal please… The Bag Raiders boys will be bashing it out at SOS Rooftop Bar, Anantara on Sunday 11 April from 5pm for a sweet sunset session. Do it.

Peaches Gender grinding the norm Merrill Nisker has been brazenly invading stages with her brand of electroclash music and ‘in your face’ vocals for over 15 years. After releasing her debut album ‘Fancypants Hoodlum’ under her own name in ’95, she switched to the pseudonym Peaches and has since released four more socialboundary shattering albums and toured the globe with various band line-ups. Bent on bringing sexual issues to the spotlight through provocative lyrics and wild performances, her fame has gained much weight for blurring the distinction between genders and her skills as a singer, songwriter and producer have continued to push her forward. Based in Berlin, The Beat struck a chord before she headed in the direction of Bali… 048 | beatmag.com

As you’ve taken your live show across the globe, have you felt the need to downsize or hold back on any performance content to any degree, due to local culture, beliefs or opinion? I guess this will be the big test because I hope to keep the show as it is. Have there ever been any moments where legalities have stepped in or local reactions have deterred an event? Ever been pulled off stage for indecent exposure? An accompanied minor’s mother ever managed to slice through the house electrics with a crucifix in protest? Local police chief ever felt threatened because he questioned his own sexuality unexpectedly? Ha, great phrasing of the question but I do want to say

c. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemi I admire the band MEN. This is the new band of JD Samson from Le Tigre. I think the sound is fresh and their approach to music and performance will rule the world! Anywhere in the world you’ve found an unexpected level of support for your work? Well, I just went to Iceland at the weekend with the solo show and they sure flipped out! that I have never indecently exposed myself on stage. I do wear pink and nude color tights so I guess with some pink lights someone could believe I’m nude but I have never been so on stage and it amazes me that people claim they have seen this. I used to wear a dildo for the song ‘Shake Yer Dix’ and once in LA they thought about reporting me, probably for the reasons you mentioned, or they wished they had a dildo like my red leather one. Ha ha! Provoking people to question their own beliefs is obviously something you like to push. Was there a point in your life when this was a struggle for you personally? Were there any discernable moments in your life where your own desire for acceptance or self-confidence led you to challenge others in finding their own? I think it’s made me the confident person I am. It’s important to question authorities and roles placed upon oneself. It is essential for growth. When I provoke I do it from an honest place and add humor to ease any discomfort. Some people are afraid of this and those are the people who find what I do offensive. It’s their own fear. Was your initial upbringing one that encouraged open thought and free communication or was it something you had to push for? I grew up in the 70s and it was a pretty open, loving, non-political, caring family. Ever had your parents attend a show? Reactions? My parents are huge supporters of my work and come to my shows when they can. Who do you admire as an artist or person in power that is currently breaking social boundaries with positive intent?

With five albums behind you, are there any new directions you would like to take yourself that you would see as challenging? Well right now I am performing Jesus Christ Superstar (Peaches Christ Superstar) as a one-woman show at a theatre in Berlin. It is very challenging to do a 90 minute rock opera alone! As a self-confessed control freak, who has managed to unexpectedly influence you in a positive way over the course of your career, both musically and personally? That’s a big long question and an interview in itself! If you could meet anyone from the past, present or future, who would it be and what would you ask them? I would have loved to meet Wendy O’Williams who was a fantastic groundbreaking female performer from 1978 to 1988. I would love to discuss all the controversy she experienced. She is not with us anymore so R.I.P. What can we expect to be hit with when you take to the stage at SOS? Full-out energy, feel good release! Latest message you’d like to scream into the ears of the masses? DO IT!

Peaches will strut her stuff with a solo show on guitar, synth and vocals at SOS on Thursday, April 15, 9pm. Get in the ring… beatmag.com | 049

Thirsty for Change

Established by music producer Kevin Wall and ex US Vice President Al Gore, Live Earth was founded on the belief that entertainment has the power to overcome social and cultural barriers and move the world community to take action. 2007 saw the largest global entertainment event in history take place with simultaneous concerts in New York, London, Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg and Hamburg. This year sees Live Earth Indonesia taking place, to highlight the issues around water contamination and shortage throughout the world and within Indonesia itself. Despite Indonesia’s apparent abundance of water, many of its lakes and rivers are running low and are contaminated due to the destruction of forests, urban runoff and garbage. This event aims to convey a message to local communities regarding the water crisis, as education on the subject is very limited here, resulting in a low appreciation for resolving the issues at hand. The event will take place on Sunday, April 18th and will consist of a series of 6 km runs/walks (the average distance many women and children walk every day to secure water), a social-educative program on the water crisis by Indonesia Water Partnership Global Water Challenge and Live Earth, along with merchandise booths and restaurants. There will also be a concert, filled with Indonesia’s top musicians and celebrities, such as Slank, GIGI, God Bless, Glenn Fredley, Dwiki Dharmawan, Nugie, Dik Doank, DJ Anton, Changcuters, Vidi Aldiano, Sherina, Maliz & d’Essentials, Superman Is Dead, Efek Rumah Kaca, Saykoji, Bondan Prakoso & Fade2Black, ALmost D’Va and Nima. Despite the limited amount of venues supporting original live music, Bali is still home to a huge network of talented musicians and songwriters. Not to be held back by the system, bands are still forming and jamming it out in rehearsal studio across the island, recording albums and performing wherever they can set up their gear. The Beat decided to take a closer look at who’s been making the most amount of noise…

C

Chick Magnet is: Fredy on vocals and guitar, Tom on bass and backup vocals, Topanther plays lead guitar and Olin is on drums.

066 | beatmag.com

hick Magnet is an indie punk rock band hailing from Bali, who got together in mid-April of 1999. Back in 2003, the band got the chance to release their debut album ‘Dunia Baru’ (New World), which consisted of 8 tracks with their biggest hit single ‘Suara Hati’ (Conscience) becoming well-known in Bali’s underground punk rock scene. Two of their singles, ‘Jangan Pernah’ (Never Ever) and ‘Harapan’ (Hope) were also present on the ‘Rock After School’ 1 and 2 compilation albums. After suffering some turmoil due to changing band members, the band finally pulled through in 2007 to start work on their second album, entitled ‘3 Year Journey Begins’. A planned release date of April 2010 will also coincide with a celebration of the band’s 11 year survival. The second album will have 11 tracks themed around love and friendship, inspired by the band members’ daily lives.

G

etting together to play at a campus event back in 2002, the boys of TolBandTol had no intention of sticking together long term, that is until they saw the crowd’s reaction to their performance. With positive feedback pushing them on, the boys kept rehearsing, writing and hitting local stages. On the recording side, plenty of singles have since hit the radio airwaves, earning them a loyal and growing fan base and bringing the release of a debut album to the shelves, entitled ‘Mari Bergoyang dan Bergelinjang’ (Let’s Dance And Shake). With the main theme of their music focused on having fun and shaking your moneymaker, the shows they play are all about having a good time and cutting loose on the dance floor. Thanks to this fun attitude, they were chosen to represent Bali in the LA Lights Indie Festival in 2008. TolBandTol are Giri Teja Setiadi on vocals, Inayat anhar on bass, Yunan Taufiq on lead guitar, I Wayan Darmawan on rhythm guitar, Pande Made Sudarsana on keyboard and Raffael Agung Pradiptha on drums. tolbandtol@yahoo.co.id www.myspace.com/tolbandtolbali

Gribs are Rezanov (Reza Novra) on vocals, Dion Arnaldo on guitar, Arief Tri Satya on bass and Rashta Harashta Husri on the drums. w w w. m y s p a c e . c o m / gribsrock

L

ooking like a classic glam rock band from the 80s, Gribs have been jamming together since 2005, and have gone through many name changes. Finally in 2008 they came up with the name Gribs, which is actually a tag word for ‘Gondrong, Kribo Bersaudara’ (Long-Haired and Curly Brothers), which clearly describes the band’s appearance. Playing in the line of rock inspired by the big hair bands of the 70s and 80s, such as Aerosmith, Bon

Jovi, Power Metal and other classic bands the guys stay faithful to, Gribs have released a self-titled debut album consisting of 12 rock tracks, and just recently three of their tracks ‘Ruang Besi’ (Iron Room), ‘Pejuang’ (Fighter) and ‘Malam Frustrasi’ (Frustrating Night) were available for RBT download. Classic Glam Rock was a genre thought long gone, but this quartet have successfully resurrected it from its long slumber.

Defining

Electronic music has taken the world by storm, proving to be an art form that is not only here to stay, but will continually reinvent itself through evolving genres and the experimental ideas of those who produce its sounds. There are plenty of titles for the varying styles of dance music and attempting to define them can be like trying to describe color to a blind man. So who better to ask than some of our leading players…

the DJ

Tribal

According to DJ Romy the definition of Tribal is… “…Tribal is all about the sounds of percussions and drums driving the electronic track. The track can often contain several different drum sounds and although they are usually organic or sound live, these days many drum patterns are replaced with elements of synth or noise. Tribal House is one of the most minimalist strands of electronic music. The tribal beats originated from traditional musical instruments from Africa, Arabia and even from Indonesia. It eventually evolved into a genre or element in dance music a long time ago. Today there are many sub-genres that have developed such as Progressive House, Tech Tribal, Trance Tribal, Tribal Dub, Deep Tribal and many others.”

068 | beatmag.com

beatmag.com | 069

feature I’ve used Tribal elements from the beginning, incorporating original elemental sounds of acoustic percussion and drum sounds, tweaking them to become white or pink noise... using synth with original drum patterned sounds...

As one of the early pioneers of house culture in Indonesia, Romy is no stranger to the evolution of dance music within this country. He is renowned for comfortably moving through a huge range of styles to suit any dance floor, but is most notably recognized for the tribal influence to his tech sets. With his company 1945FM he is at the helm of a record label, DJ Management and Promotions Company and through it, has released a score of albums, organized major events and pushed many a DJ into international waters. In recognition of his achievements, plenty of awards have come his way including Best Producer, Best DJ and Best Track through the REDMA and Paranoia Awards. Born in Yogyakarta 34 years ago, Alex Raditya remained in his city of birth, with his passion for drawing and design leading him to study at the city’s ‘Indonesian Institute of Arts’. After taking an opportunity to live in Munich, Germany and work as a graphic designer, Alex gained a strong appreciation for the European lifestyle, but after seven years he felt pulled to return home. Though he now lives in Bali and pursues photography as a full time profession, his love for his hometown, its people, culture and atmosphere, often sees him traveling back to Yogyakarta to appreciate its familiarity.

074 | beatmag.com

Mostly inspired by conceptual and human interest, here Alex presents a collection of photos that were taken on his last visit. To him they represent the average person’s daily struggle, kept strong by their own faith and simple lifestyle. They also capture a classic Javanese atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. “Yogyakarta is a miniature version of Indonesia. You can still find the old days alive and well there, where the people start the day with a smile and friendly greetings”

“ You can find every race and religion from the archipelago living in harmony together. It is a city famous for its great artists and its large student population, a city that never loses its warmth and friendly nature

ali’s next destination for those who know how to roll has now hit Kerobokan. Sunday the 21st of March saw 69 Junkyard kick off its skate park area with a soft opening bash, giving everybody a chance to check out the huge space that will soon become a playground for the sports inclined. With most of the building still under construction, the junkyard theme went without saying, giving an industrial feel that struck the right chord with the punk bands Sneakers, Poppies Soldiers and Devils Dice banging out their riffs and the collection of local skate, music and surf crew that showed up for the occasion. Burgers and beers were lined up for the masses as those with their boards got busy on the quarter pipes. This was just the beginning of plenty more action at 078 | beatmag.com

this cool new site so keep an eye out for the next stage. Cafes, a bar, shops and a huge Perspex skate tube are all on the way. The man behind the entire concept is Tony Nugroho and as he says, “From this world class Skate Park will be born world class skaters.” You heard the man. Grab your board and get down there…

bon Heath is an artist from Brooklyn, New York, who has an infinite obsession with scripts, words and language that goes much further than just verbal idioms. His ongoing project ‘Stereo.type’, which he started back in 1994, explores script and words as physical entities, therefore, it is impossible for it to appear in standard writing conventions. Resembling a form of ‘visual poetry’, the series could be categorized as sculptures, installations or three-dimensional objects formed by words. Ebon Heath is an uprising artist and designer, and through many international exhibitions and art projects, is also a visiting professor in Lehman College, New York and an art director at Mindpirates, Berlin.

Taming the

Technique

I MADE ALIT SUAJA Badung, 15 May 1977

The PROCESS

Using a realists approach to painting, I Made Alit Suaja (Alit) creates photographic life like images of people that depict Balinese people and their traditional way of life. Before paint touches the canvas, Alit sketches out the image first with charcoal, to act as a guideline. Commonly using oil paints to bring the black and white sketches to life, as oil paints give a more organic look and feel to the photographic images.

the Inspiration

Alit’s photo realistic paintings are based on photographic images that he finds interesting and depicts the message that he wishes to send out through his artwork. The objects that he chooses exhibit matters surrounding Bali’s traditional culture amongst the modernizing world of today, from his perspective.

Miss Kelly Marie

S

eperti apa rasanya menjadi seorang DJ, Penyiar Radio, Entertainer, sekaligus Produser? Hailing from London, Miss Kelly Marie (MKM) came to Red Square to give Jakarta a taste of her Soulful, Funky and Uplifting House tracks. Resident DJ Reza Bukan got things started with his House beats, which slowly reeled in the crowd. MKM’s turn on the decks was enthusiastically greeted by the crowd’s cheers, as dancers also took to the stage to liven up the atmosphere. A pity Red Square, Jakarta wasn’t too crowded that night.
