Halloween came and went over a five day period this year and it appears to be getting bigger every time now. Some venues really put a lot of work and money into their specific Halloween nights and you can see which venues’ communities are really up for a good night out together by how many people attended their respective shows this year. In the end, Halloween, even being a celebration from the other side of the planet and most people not even knowing what it’s really about, is one of the biggest shows in town, even beating New Year’s Eve in a local community sense, and don’t we love it. Check the coverage inside the ThereThere section, which is now at the back of the magazine since the last edition if you didn’t notice. There are plenty of other shows to check in that TT section and don’t forget to have a close look at the Mainstage and HereNow sections to find out what shows are coming our way over the next two weeks. There is as always a load of exception talent on the way. So this is the 350th edition of this little magazine. I’m not sure if there are many other magazines in town that have reached this milestone, but I must say it has been a lot of fun putting them all together over the years. We’ve had a multitude of people working hard at different times helping to make this magazine and I would like to thank them all for their effort and inspiration. We’d also like to thank all the advertisers for their support and of course without them we wouldn’t be able to print anything at all. And also most of all we would like to thank you the readers for your continuing support over the past 350 two-week periods. Without you we’d also be nothing. If you have any comments or want a Beat VIP Card to get discounts in some of the best restaurants all over town please drop us a line at the email addresses on this page. Thank you all for your support.

Hard Rock International Launched Imagine 2013 Global Campaign in Bali Last October 28 holds a special place in Hard Rock International’s heart, as it marks the launch of the “Imagine – There’s No Hunger” global campaign, a collaboration with Yoko Ono Lennon and long time charity partner Why Hunger (whyhunger.org). The day started with a much-anticipated visit to some of the lessfortunate communities in Bali by Hamish Dodds, President and CEO of Hard Rock International, Andrew Khoo, General Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Bali, and also the three Imagine 2012 Activation Global Winners from Hard Rock Cafe Hamburg, Hard Rock Cafe Brussels, and Hard Rock Hotel Penang. The trip aimed to gain a better understanding of the problems of hunger faced by children of Bali and ways to fight against it. Later that night, leading Indonesian rock band Kotak stole the show, raising a considerable sum of money which contributed to the Rp 100 million donated to the Solemen Indonesia Foundation.

FNPF Helps Critically Endangered Bali Starling Chicks Hatch in Nusa Penida With their dedication to help conserve an iconic yet critically endangered fauna including Bali starlings in the wild, Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF) was set up in 1997. This October marks a big milestone for their Bali starlings’ sanctuary on Nusa Penida. Known for mating for life and hatching between one and three chicks per clutch, FNPF’s Nusa Penida bird keepers are elated that four healthy chicks hatched about two weeks ago. Despite relying solely on donations to fund their work, FNPF has gained a number of achievements with centers located in Nusa Penida, mainland Bali and Kalimantan. If you would like to make a difference, whether as a volunteer or a sponsor, please reach them by means of the details below. Yayasan Pecinta Taman Nasional Jl Bisma #3 Ubud T. 977 978 info@fnpf.org

Mid-November Market & Museum Fashion Bazaar in Bali As the name suggests, on this November 15 to 17, there will be a fashion bazaar organized by the Market & Museum on the third floor of Beachwalk Shopping Center Bali. The bazaar with the theme of ‘Trofleacal Paradise’ will be offering a wide range of fashion items, accessories, and merchandises by national entrepreneurs. After successfully attracting tens of thousands of people to its ‘In-Flight’ and ‘Candy Lab’ themed fashion bazaars in Jakarta last May and September respectively, this time it is predicted to be even merrier with an Instagram photo competition with attractive prizes to be won. Similar to its previous events, you will also be able to find a food and beverage fair which you can visit in between skimming through the racks. The bazaar is open to public with no entry fee and will run from 12pm-10pm on the first day and from 10am-10pm on the last two days.

Streosonic-Marlo

saturday nov 9

Roots

The Dutch-born DJ, Marlo Hoogstraten or simply known as Marlo (stylized as MaRLo) AKA Liquid M has made Australia his home base for his trance production. Known collectively and widely as Marlo Sound, his distinctive style has reached far beyond the borders of trance, taking a bit of progressive house and other parts of tech trance.

Sounds

Electronic, trance, progressive, techno

Where you might have heard him

Marlo’s name and tracks have decorated numerous charts in Australia and abroad. His most recent notable anthem was “Boom”, which not only gained fame hitting #3 on Beatport but also went viral largely becauce of support from Armin van Buuren. Some of the festivals where he has performed include Sensation, Trance Energy (the Netherlands and Australia), Uitmarkt Festival Amsterdam, Stereosonic, Creamfields, Gatecrasher, Slinky, Godskitchen and a load more. Talking about his remixes, one should not forget how his remix ft. Jano of Ferry Corsten’s “The Island” and “Punk” made waves in the Beatport trance chart by hitting #1 and #3 respectively. Marlo, who hosts his monthly radio show, has just recently been hailed as the #1 Best Trance DJ and #2 overall DJ in Australia. In the studios, he has earned the honor of submitting tracks into Armin van Buuren’s A State Of Trance, with ASOT 650 being next up on the list to be dropped.

Why see him

This guy unites people of all genres with his ear-catching anthem tracks. His innate ability in creating his own Marlo Sound has the attention of top-tier DJs like Armin van Buuren and Tiësto, who have put his tracks on their compilations and releases. He will be performing at Sky Dome@Sky Garden on November 9, so be there!

D Ramirez

saturday nov 16

Roots

Hailing from Sheffield, England, Dean Marriott aka D Ramirez is yet another world-class DJ, remixer and producer. Born in 1970, he’s been making music for about 30 solid years now, having taught himself the basics in music technology with a couple of Roland SH101’s, Roland TR808 drum machines, and a Casio CZ101 since he was a teenager. Today, his New York-based career keeps him moving thanks to his meticulous DJ mixes where loops, tricks and FX’s are intricately laced with exceptional accuracy.

Sounds

House, electro, techno

Where you might have heard him

His outfit The Lisa Marie Experience, in which he partnered with Neil Hinde became famous for their track “Keep on Jumping” in 1996, placing them on #5 in the UK charts. Dean dug his ‘underground soldier’ soul deeper and hid himself under a few more monikers such as Cordial, Finger Fest, and Rambo. However, amongst all, D Ramirez is the one that really stands out, putting other monikers in its shadow. In 2007, DJ Magazine awarded him Best Remix and Best Producer, having previously been knighted as Player of the Year by iDJ in 2006. He also remixed Bodyrox’s first commercial single “Yeah Yeah” which earned him a nomination for an Ivor Novello Award. From time to time, D Ramirez has formed fruitful and exciting collaborations, from which some critically-acclaimed EDM anthems saw the light of the day such as “Downpipe”, “Fragile Tension” and “Tease Machine” EP released on Germany’s Great Stuff label. He’s even performed on BBC Television’s Top of the Pops. D Ramirez also owns two music labels called Vudu and Slave Recordings which reaffirmed his good standing as one of the most prolific UK DJs around.

Why see him

D Ramirez is a true underground soldier who guards fresh and evolving sounds of house, electro and techno at the same time. He is also full of technical musical knowledge, as seen from the forum on his website. See him playing live at Cocoon Beach Club on November 16.

Compuphonic

sunday nov 17

Roots

For Compuphonic AKA Maxime Firket, classical music has unconsciously shaped his current music repertoire. Raised in a world surrounded with melody, he was born in 1983 in Liège, Belgium, took up the cello when he was eight years old. Ten years later, listening to Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Front 242 and Detroit techno proved to be an addictive pastime. It led him astray from his cello and went on to get him spinning records, first at his home studio in 2003 and at Dirty Dancing parties two years later.

Sounds

Electro, house, techno

Where you might have heard him

For all of you in the know, the views of his video for his summer 2012 anthem “Sunset” on YouTube have quietly crept up to three million and counting. The track just got a second life last February along with some of Compuphonic’s house remixes of tracks from Aeroplane, Waze & Odyssey, Aashton & Swift and LPZ released on Beatport. Passionate for harmony, he twisted the ear of Tiga, the guy who owns Turbo Recordings, and who decided to help him release his first EP entitled “Emotion” which gained unanimous support. Compuphonic also teamed up with his buddy, Kolombo, on various remixes and EPs such as Cari Lekebusch’s (ft. Kolombo) “Shaded”, The Presets’ (ft. Kolombo) “Anywhere”, and his own “Artifice” EP. Young but accomplished, he also runs his own label called Union Match Music under which he is signed to alongside venerated labels like Get Physical, Freerange, 20:20 Vision, Turbo Recordings and more. He was also involved with the Belgian rock group Montevideo for the album MVSC in 2008 with regards to its production and the keyboards. 2013 is fronting up to be a big year as he will drop his debut album very soon with the help from American soul singer/violinist Marques Toliver.

Why see him

Having played such a demanding instrument like the cello speaks volume about his musical talent and versatility. Compuphonic’s certainly one to watch if you want to have the right mood in a club party. On November 17, he’ll be playing at Woo Bar.

Boston Switch

WEDNESday nov 20

Roots

Blake McDonald known as Boston Switch hails from Margaret River, Western Australia and spends half his time behind the turntables spinning some of the sickest mix ups and the other half in the surf riding for Rusty all over the world.

Sounds

Electric, house, moombahton

Where you might have heard him

He’s visited Indonesia already a few times this year throwing down some epic parties. Across in WA he’s ripped up at Groovn the Moo Festival, the Future Music After Show and Dead Beats. He’s played across at Komune on the Australian Eastside and makes appearances at various surf parties like The Margaret River Pro. His southern hemisphere summer is jam packed from the Dragon Summer Launch Party, Stereosonic Launch and Skate International in Perth there’s barely a day free on this guys busy set schedule.

Why see him

With sell out shows, he’s a man who knows more than a thing or two about how to work the decks and get a party started including his new addiction to crowd surfing. He’s described as “two-thirds DJ and four-fifths talent with two tablespoons of confidence for good measure” and we think that sounds enough reason to check him out. Playing at Eikon on the Nov 20th, be sure to check Mr Boston Switch in the house.

Afgan

friday nov 22

Roots

Afgan Syah Reza or simply Afgan is an Indonesian singer who was born in Jakarta on May 27, 1989. Born in a music-oriented family, little Afgan was drawn into the world of music himself-specifically singing. His professional career began with an on-the-spot recruitment by the producer of WannaB Music Production after being impressed by his vocals.

Sounds

Pop, soul, R&B, jazz

Where you might have heard him

For those of you who have been listening to the radio or music programs on TV, it is quite rare not see this guy’s music videos or hear his chart-topping songs. Having signed to WannaB Music Production at the start of his career, Afgan released his debut album Confession No. 1 in January 2008, which was distributed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment Indonesia. Its best track entitled ”Terima Kasih Cinta” earned him his first few awards such as 2008 MTV Indonesia Awards (‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘Favorite Male Artist’) and the Anugerah Planet Muzik 2009 (‘Best Male Singer’) to name a few. Afgan also is talented in acting, as shown from his two movies, Bukan Cinta Biasa (2009) and Cinta 2 Hati (2010). He sang for the OST of both movies which led to his second album entitled The One (2010). So far, Afgan, who just dropped his third album called L1ve To Love on Valentine’s Day this year, has bagged 29 awards under his belt including the SCTV Music Awards and Dahsyatnya Awards, two of many annual widely followed and observed awards in Indonesia’s music industry.

Why see him

With his unique singing voice and sweat love songs, he has continually built up a host of fans, mainly girls in both in Indonesia and Malaysia. Apart from pop, he also explores the world of jazz, soul and R&B. If you missed his last few performances in Bali, make sure you get to Boshe on November 22 to listen to his hits.

Anton Wirjono

friday nov 22

Roots

More than a DJ on the decks; Wirjono is a man of many business ventures and a popular and successful one at that-especially amongst the Jakarta cool crowd. A talented creative; Anton divides his time between crafting amazing sounds, art, fashion and now even food. His love of music came from being a teen growing up in the US and going to stadiums to see live bands and DJs. He was instrumental in creating the electronic dance music scene in Jakarta and Bali over the past 15 years.

Sounds

House, electronic dance, indie pop

WHERE YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD HIM

To begin, Anton Wirjono is an award winning DJ and has been applauded by MTV as having “the Midas touch”; he’s played at a multitude of off the chain house parties and has been an influential disc jockey within Indonesia especially Jakarta and its best clubs. He’s the man behind the Jakarta Movement; an organized rave party and helped founded ‘Escape’, he also formed Agrikulture; an indie-pop group with his younger brother and a few friends and has been an influential figure within the electronic dance scene in Indonesia. He’s created one this island’s biggest music events; The Junction Bali Festival, which has just had its 8th edition in August of this year and features pure house music for the masses. Anton loves house. He is also the brains behind his companies, the event promotion and DJ group, Future10 and the underground street style department store in Jakarta, The Goods Dept. There’s not much this charming young man can’t put his hand to. And oh yeah, he plays pretty damn good electronic music too.

WHY YOU SHOULD SEE HIM

He’s got a cult following among the hip, fashionable crowd and has been in the business long enough to know what’s hot and what’s not. With award winning mix ups, this is a party you don’t want to miss. Check out Anton Wirjono at Hu’u Bar on November 22.

T

he popular Diva lunches, initiated by Bali expat Christina Iskandar, scored another accolade in October, raising over Rp 50 million for the Bali Children Foundation. One thing must be said about the Bali Bombing of 2002, it galvanized a community and the results of uprising in the face of tragedy has continued to grow and benefit so many. Not least of all the children, many of whom weren’t even born. From Jodie O’Shea to I’m an Angel Foundation and Bali Children Foundation, many of these philanthropists were leading ordinary lives when an extraordinary event brought them together and set them on a path to support and help those less fortunate in the community. It has grown well beyond helping the victims and their families and rebuilding a broken-hearted community. The lessons learned in those early days have been translated now into professional organisations which have created sustainable programs to help the poor and most importantly to educate local children so that they themselves can go on to change the future of their communities. Reaching out well beyond Kuta, the poorest areas of Bali are in the north and the west of the island and it is here, in the heartland of Bali where traditionally many children never even made it through primary school, that we are seeing the effects of years of

fund-raising and grass roots programs. Educate a child and you improve the future for everyone. Many organisations in Bali, including the wonderful East Bali Poverty Project, have created programs that give poor communities the tools to help themselves. By giving them access to education, making sure families have the funds necessary to feed and clothe their children, have access to drinking water, basic hygiene as well as ensuring they have shoes and books makes an enormous difference. Other organisations are now seeking guidance from those who have gone before and created programs that not only meet the needs of the community but gives them the thing that can never be taken away; hope. Hope for a better future, hope for a better world. There are many ways in which each one of us can help and supporting the individuals and organisations that have carved a path to a better, sustainable future is just one way. The Divas at the lunch to benefit Bali Children Foundation secured the future of twenty children through private sponsorship. It costs just $200 a year to get a child through primary school. There are those of us who spend that on lunch, think about it. Congratulations to the founder Marg Barry and her team and to the Bali Divas who put their hands in their handbags to help Bali’s children secure a better future.

A Jady in Waiting Tell us all about yourself. Start from birth and all the important milestones in your life until this very moment.

It’s not a big secret that I was born pretty much yesterday. That’s 22 years ago in Amsterdam with a French dad, a Moluccan mom and an Italian stepdad. I started working for events and clubs before it was even legit and lived on my own from when I was nearly 16 years old. I kind of wanted to break free quite early. So two years ago, thanks to an internship at a bookings agency, the opportunity arrived to work on the other side of the planet, I didn’t hesitate. And just as many others who moved here, I couldn’t help but stay.

Describe your average day.

The regular Bali expat day, I guess, a bit of work, a lot of chilling and relaxing, gym, massages and watching movies in bed with my boyfriend. Everyday we’re on a mission to find a good place to eat (which I find very hard) and of course I try to enjoy the sun as much as possible, since I come from a country where even in summer it’s too much to ask for a bit of sunshine.

Describe your ideal day.

To have a mix of the island life and my city life. Waking up with a nice view and shining sun, throwing a BBQ party in the park that starts with four and ends with 40 people, followed by romantically watching the sunset on a beach with a glass (or bottle) of wine. Then having a home cooked meal from my mommy. Go to bed early but get pulled out

of it by friends yelling at my front door to go club hopping and to finish my night with one shoe left. Not remembering how I got home but therefore knowing it was great.

What’s the best thing about working at Mint?

Definitely the music! Before I worked at Mint I used to come there whenever I had a night off. The nice thing about Mint is that it’s a second home to so many people. We have about 60% of loyal customers who come every week. And of course the team. Most of them have been working there since Mint opened and every day I’m learning new things from them.

What’s the worst thing about the Bali nightlife industry?

The drunk-no-helmet-driving. Every night I see people leaving the club that can barely walk but still think it’s a good choice to drive their bike and put them and others in danger. A few months ago I had a small accident in my own quiet street on my way to work (sober). I landed on my head and suffered a small concussion. I was damn lucky I was wearing my helmet. Ever since I always do and if I go out (which is not that much haha) I prefer taking a taxi or ojek because hey what’s 50k against a millions rupiah hospital bill or even worse your life? There’s 24 hours left before an asteroid hits earth, Bruce Willis and a team of miners are out trying to blow up the asteroid, but that might not work, what do you do? Get me and all my beloved ones a ticket to the moon and watch the show!

What’s your opinion on the infamous Bintang singlet, as a fashion statement, a status symbol, and as a socioeconomic indicator?

72

www.beatmag.com

I really don’t get why people wear those, especially to go out. I find them highly unattractive. We don’t allow them in our club, we ask our guests to dress accordingly so no beach wear. We’re quite easy at the door actually, flip-flops are fine but just balance it with a collared shirt for example.

Tell us some great thing about Mint.

As we want to show our appreciation to all our local customers we’ve started giving out exclusive membership cards which provide great discounts and free entry. Anybody that hasn’t received one yet and thinks they deserve one, holla! Also for all our lady patrons, we’ve started doing Ladies Night every Thursday where we’re offering a selection of our most popular cocktails for only 60k throughout the whole night. So ladies, come on over.

Promote some upcoming events.

This Friday, November 8 we have the Brazilian Wehbba as our guest. It’s his first time in Bali but he has been a regular in some of the hottest clubs and parties all around the globe and has collaborated with many of our previous guest DJs. December promises to be a busy month: we have Quivver from the UK coming over and Tiefschwarz is playing for us again. Then beside our NYE event we’ll be celebrating our 2nd Anniversary as well, which both will be massive but I can’t reveal who’s playing yet so stay tuned!

Do you like cats?

Nah, can’t trust them, I do have a rabbit at home!

erched right on the cliff overlooking the spectacularly rugged Bukit coastline, the multipurpose entertainment venue of Klapa is reached by winding down the scenic route through the picturesque Pecatu countryside towards what is now known as New Kuta Beach. A stunning golf course, more than a few trendy hotels and a stack of luxury villas and resorts surround the venue, meaning that Klapa is the ideal place to convene over a top end menu and wicked drinks list if you are working, resting, playing or staying nearby. Dining-wise, there’s the option of Western, Chinese, Mediterranean,

Indonesian banquet and beachy bite style fare at the five separate restaurants spread out through Klapa. On this occasion, a friend and I made our way down the sweeping central spiral staircase, and headed for the huge lounge area, which features a nice mix of dinner tables and sofas for a spot of chic grazing, all surrounding the central bar. Despite being inside, the air-conditioned Lounge restaurant is open on two sides, and is just steps to the infinity pool or the viewing deck, meaning you have a number of options of where to sit.

FOOD

There’s no fiddling around with different menus for certain times of the day here, everything you need can be found within the pages of the hefty main menu. From daytime grazing and light lunches to evening meals and decadent desserts – it’s all in there, but for those who like to change it up, the kitchen team at Klapa, headed by Chef Purnawan have cooked up a clutch of daily specials. On Mondays check out the duck bulgogi, and the Korean BBQ on Tuesdays. Since we dropped by on a Wednesday, we were treated to the Western Set Menu Promo (300k), which comes in one of two forms. I opted for set menu 1, which comprises of a crispy spice soft shell crab appetizer, grilled beef tenderloin with mushroom sauce, mash potato and vegetable ratatouille for the main, and a wonderfully palatte-cleansing passionfruit mirror for dessert, with vanilla ice cream and strawberry coulis. My friend went with Set Menu 2, which features a prawn and papaya salad, grilled chicken breast with potato gratin, ratatouille, leek fondau and mushroom cream sauce, with banana crepes with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream to finish up. Each option comes with a coffee or tea to finish, however to wash down your courses I would recommend the Klapa apple mint cooler mocktail (35k++) for maximum refreshment.

For the rest of the week, Thursdays have a set menu of traditional Chinese fare, Fridays is all about Asian bites, and for the weekend it’s a grilled fish style BBQ of Jimbaranic proportions. Dan Ashcroft

A Post-apocalyptic Civil War, the Dark World, and a Not Real Family’s Road Trip by: pande

In this issue, we still aren’t at the point where we’ll be getting those Christmas season blockbusters, but there’s a few films worth a gander. First, Jennifer Lawrence repises her role in the Hunger Games. Second, Thor is engaged in the battle of his life, fighting another alien race. And last but not least, have some laughs with Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikisas as they try to smuggle drugs while pretending to be an American family. Check movie schedules on www.21cineplex.com or take the DVD crap shoot.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi. Director: Francis Lawrence. Writer: Simon Beaufoy (screenplay), Michael Arndt (screenplay, as Michael deBruyn), Suzanne Collins (novel “Catching Fire”). Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz.

Picking up from where the first installment left, after Katniss’ defiance in the games, President Snow terrorizes her boyfriend and pretend cousin Gale (Liam Hemsworth). In the meantime, the Capitol is preparing the 75th Hunger Games where the only participants are from the existing pool of victors and an uprising is getting more rampant across Panem. In the hope of supporting the rebellion towards the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta are down in the arena once more with Peeta still hanging on to his unrequited love for her. Catch this movie directed by the director of I Am Legend and expect PG-13 violence.

Thor: The Dark World Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Alan Taylor. Writer: Christopher Yost (screenplay), Christopher Markus (screenplay), Stephen McFeely (screenplay), Don Payne (story), Robert Rodat (story). Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Christopher Eccleston, Jaimie Alexander.

This film remains firmly in the Avengers universe where a new threat to Asgard has Thor teaming up with his evil half brother Loki. Natalie Portman returns for this sequel which I think we can all agree is a massive plus. Expect fantastical action sequence with a lot of comic relief from Thor’s sidekicks along with a few reveals for the next Avengers film.

We’re the Millers Comedy, Crime. Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber. Writer: Bob Fisher (screenplay and story), Steve Faber (screenplay and story), Sean Anders (screenplay), John Morris (screenplay). Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Emma Roberts, Will Poulter, Nick Offerman.

Say hi to the Millers! In this comedy, David Clark (Jason Sudeikis), in an attempt to pay back a debt, must smuggle in marijuana from Mexico into the United States. He assembles a bogus family to avoid getting searched at the border. The family includes a cynical stripper (Jennifer Aniston) posing as his wife, as well as two maladjusted kids as his children – a runaway thief (Emma Roberts) and an ill-equipped-for-life teen (Will Poulter). Directed by the director of Easy A, this movie has all the potential for laughs... or crickets.

Pearl Jam

Lightning Bolt After 22 years and ten albums, Pearl Jam are a band with nothing to prove. Cutting a path that has always been about doing things their own way, Eddie Vedder and company have never succumbed to fad or folly, attracting a legion of devotees worldwide and becoming one of the great American bands of their generation. Back in 1991, when the term ‘grunge’ had only just been coined, their game changing debut Ten sounded like nothing else out there, an original sound that sat somewhere between punk and college rock. Although the band have grown up, Lightning Bolt remains true to that spirit of measured, honest-to-goodness guitar-driven balladry, which, in this day and age of hipster folk and electro experimentation, runs the very real risk of being shelved as sooooooo last decade. It’s not though, purely down to the fact that these guys really know how to knock out a tune; collaborative songwriters from the old school who can craft something stunning using only the simplest tools. Penned by guitarist Mike McCready, standout track “Sirens” is exactly the kind of MoR schmaltz that in the hands of anyone else would have been an absolute disaster. Here though, the combination of bittersweet vocals, soaring guitars and complete lack of irony mean that it really does transcend any kind of ‘dinosaur music’ stigma. It’s a similar story on “Yellow Moon”, and the haunting group effort of “Pendulum”. Sitting alongside the mild-mannered college radio fodder there’s still plenty of piss and vinegar in between the ballads; “Mind your manners!” spits Vedder on head banging lead single of the same name, sounding every bit the impassioned radical of“Spin the Black Circle” and “Do the Evolution”some 15 years ago. A smattering of other tracks (“My Father’s Son”, “Lightning Bolt”, “Let the Records Play”) confirm that the Seattle survivors still know how to get rowdy. Young upstarts take note; Lightning Bolt is the kind of measured study in integrity and poise that only two decades of experience can bring. Granted it won’t win any awards for innovation, but in paying homage to PJ’s core style, Lightning Bolt proves a remarkably relevant effort. “I change by not changing’ sang Vedder once, and let’s hope they never do. King Dan Ashcroft the wicked ruled his world.

Oppo Find 5

You might know Oppo mostly via its California base for pricey Blu-ray home theater systems, which have by now picked up an award or two, but the company entered a whole different ball game becoming a maker of high-end Android phones, including the thinnest one at a point. Oppo Find 5 has a steel frame inside it, making it feel very solid, while the premium looks are enhanced by the metal plate nestling the 13 MP rear camera and dual LED flash modules on the back. There are only two side keys – power button on the left, and a volume rocker on the right – which are metal and contrasting well with the white chassis, but have shallow tactile feel that takes getting used to. The SIM card tray is right above the power/ lock key, and Oppo provides a pin inside the box for ejecting it with ease. We’ve come to one of the best parts about the Oppo Find 5, and it is the 5” 1080x1920 display with integrated touch layer and 441ppi density. In short, the screen is brilliant, with bright colors, wide viewing angles, and more than sufficient performance outside under direct sunlight. Now – Dec 20 Ganesha Gallery

Positive Negative presents Exhibit U; a photographic exhibition featuring 25 local and international exhibitors displaying a series of works of mixed mediums, mixed themes and magical images. The exhibition’s concept is that of gallery owner Debbie Amelsvoort who created the exhibition to give an opportunity to a wide range of photographic artists. The mission of Positive Negative gallery is not only to exhibit the best of local and international fine arts but also give an artist “a leg up”. Check out Exhibit U in Seminyak’s newest contemporary art space at 99 Jl. Drupadi, Seminyak.

Ganesha Gallery presents Body Noiseless Conversation; a group photography exhibition showcasing a collaboration between Komang Totok Parwata and Rudi Vaishnava along with various pieces from three other photographers. The artists explore a lot of the body as an object; using lighting and colouring techniques as inspiration for the work environment. Parwata focuses on the effects of global warming on earth and the destruction of nature reveals an influential theme in Komang’s work. Vaishnava chooses wood as his print media with his photos being candid, with no additional light added and an obvious approach to natural use of light. A wonderful series of work with body, space and light creatively looked at. Visit the exhibition at Ganesha Gellery, Four Seasons Hotel, Jimbaran Bay, Jimbaran.

Now – Dec 1 Slippery Stone Gallery Slippery Stone Gallery presents a series of works from renowned visiting American artist Vanessa Grant. The exhibition comes from a private collection permanently on show at Villa Bukit Naga, Gianyar. Grant’s works are inspired by both Italian and Indonesian landscapes with often a poetic and romantic feel to them. The abstract acrylic on canvas pieces offer the viewer a different way of observing the natural environment and communicates the energy of life in nature. The abstract technique is a way for Grant to express her inner emotions yet in a subtle way without any symbolic significance. Be sure to check out these introspective works at Slippery Stone Art Gallery, 9 Jl. Batu Belig.

Now – Dec 15 Museum Pasifika Bali’s recent APEC conference saw Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto officially open’ Miguel Covarrubias and Bali’; an exhibition dedicated to Mexican artist and anthropologist Miguel Covarrubias who lived and worked in Bali in the early 1930s. Not only an artist; Covarrubias was a cartoonist, ethnologist and even directed a Ballet in his artistically consumed lifetime. Established in 1968, this contemporary and tribal gallery is home to the works of some of Indonesian’s best artists including international artists who have resided in Indonesia in particularly Bali. The impressive space is a collective mix of contemporary paintings, installations and tribal sculptural works. whose canvas

ontemporary artist Stuart Smythe was born and raised on the shores of Waihi Beach, New Zealand. His artistic career came from an inner creative calling after spending years working within multiple industries from a chef and construction to a sculpture assistant. Smythe settled into Australia in 2007 where he studied graphic communication at the Enmore Design Centre which then led onto setting up an illustration agency and working as a head designer and digital production manager; it was during this time the artist focused more on his own organic illustration and art style as a release from the corporate world. For the past year Smythe has been calling Bali home and while doing so has been recording the electric happenings and moods of the mystical island and

ART

the lifestyle it brings. His style is fresh, bold and memorable using acrylics on wood, canvas and paper in addition to a lot of ink experimentation. To the viewer, some of Smythe’s messages and thoughts in his works may be subtle yet they are strongly influenced by looking at the world in an uninfluenced, pure point of view untainted by the media and all the common expectations of the Western world. His first solo exhibition Electric LaLa Land is Smythe’s visual perception of the electric world and the actions of ours between the chaos and harmony as energy resonates between the action and reaction. An artsitic approach inspiringly influenced by his love of the ocean, nature, music and surfing this exhibition is one not to miss. Check Electric LaLa Land out at Deus Gallery, 8 Jl Batu Mejan, Canggu on show from November 8.

FEATURE Ruler Mobs is a new female DJoutfitbasedinJakarta, made up of Simone Amenda (vocals, decks, and pictured left) and Rissa Rebellious (decks, right). They were formed by Milinka Radisic and her management team Ruler Rekordz. They’re young, brash, rocking and playing some great sounds. The Beat’s David Trauts caught up with them to find out more.

Give us the brief history of Ruler Mobs. Simone: It all began after Idul Fitri this year... Milinka had an idea to form a DJ group that had different characteristics from other DJ collectives. She came up with the name Ruler Mobs. What makes us different is that we are both women who have many tattoos, and play the kind of music that is different. What kind of music is that? Simone: We have a few tracks that we produced ourselves with support from Milinka. We also play a mix of progressive, electro and some edm. Not many Indonesian DJs are playing that style of music yet. What were you both doing before this? Simone: We were both DJing. I was in college until recently. Rissa previously had a long career in the DJ world as a resident at clubs like TeeBox, Padang. Venus, Palembang. Cheers, Purwokerto, etc.

www.beatmag.com

How long have you known each other? Simon: Since seven years ago, we’re old friends and we saw that we had a similar taste in music which then became Ruler Mobs. What are your main influences in music? Rissa: We’ve been influenced by Zedd, Krewela, WW, Knife Party, and the likes of Gareth Emery and Swedish House Mafia. What are your lyrics on your original tracks about? Rissa: Love. So how’s your love life? You guys are pretty rock and roll with all the tatts etc. What do the guys think of that? Rissa: Our love lives are awesome. We’re both single and having fun. Is it because of the tatts? Rissa: No, no. Not because of the tattoos. People rate us as being pretty cool. They give us

support and are optimistic about what we have achieved and what we are doing. We are cool, man. We DJ and have a lot of tattoos. What’s the favourite tattoo you are wearing? Rissa: My favourite tattoo is the rebellious one and the angel on my left hand. Simone: I like the nightmare pumpkin on my left hand. What achievements have you had in your short career? Any highlights? Rissa: So far so good. It has been exciting. The crowd has enjoyed the music and the euphoria that we bring to the party. So where can we see you during November? Rissa: We’re doing Finals of The Beat’s Hottest Girl of the Year contest at Reds Square on November 16 in Jakarta.
