At last the wet season has arrived and the incessant heat of the past month or so on the island has gone. With the rains falling heavily comes the annual problem of the rivers washing out again to the ocean and the west side beaches on the island becoming a mess with rubbish everywhere. Each year though the situation does improve a little as people become more conscious of pollution problems and hopefully stop throwing garbage into the rivers upstream, which eventually ends up on the beaches. There is also the problem of rubbish coming from neighbouring Java being washed along with the currents of the wet season westerly winds. Some NGO’s and government groups have organised clean up squads and tractors to alleviate the problem on Kuta Beach over the past couple of seasons but until the problem is fixed at the source it will remain cosmetic at best. So with the wet season arriving it’s a great time to try the beaches on the eastern side of the island like Sanur or Nusa Dua. Sanur has a bunch of nice restaurants along the foreshore promenade, which is a great place for a stroll, swim or a bite to eat. Give it a go. It’s also that magical time when that certain festive spirit hits the island. No, we’re not talking about Christmas, we’re talking about schoolies. That Aussie right of initiation that seems to hit Kuta by storm is sure to keep Kuta very busy in the coming weeks ahead. We just hope everyone out there stays safe and if our cover is any indication, it looks like Sunblast will be the schoolie place to go. Keep it cool kids.

In 2009, Showtek’s second album entitled Analogue Players in a Digital World confirmed their affinity to attract the mega and world-leading musicians such as Chris Brown, Carly Rae Jepsen, Medina, Jason Deruloto to work with them. With Tiësto, they co-produced many tracks including some in the Kiss from the Past album for the Allure project and as Boys Will Be Boys releasing an EP called “We Rock”. Tim Smith, who goes by the name Timmy Trumpet, is a Sydney-based Australian DJ and instrumentalist. Yes, he plays the trumpet. It’s all in the family line; both his father and grandfather were trumpeters, though none of them played alongside any DJs. so Timmy has trained with the brass instrument since he was four years old and won his first award – ‘Young Musician of the Year’ when he was 13 before finally gaining a scholarship at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music under the tutoring of Anthony Heinrich.

For so many years, Timmy roamed across the jazz music scene which was the love of his life, but ten years ago, the idea of doing solo DJ/trumpeter combined act struck him and the rest is history. His stellar talent eventually caught the ears of electronic music label Hed Kandi, which landed him a contract as well as opportunities to play before thousands of people in places across the world like Miami’s WMC and Ibiza’s Pacha at which he played alongside Erick Morillo. Timmy is also very closely associated with The Stafford Brothers, playing alongside them on the Brothers’ selected worldwide tour and also being a co-star on The Stafford Brothers Fox 8 reality TV series. 2011 saw him with his trumpet being the main supporting act of Mo-town legend Stevie Wonder in his only Australian show that year. He is ranked as #3 DJ according to the 2013 Inthemix DJ Awards. Timmy’s most notable accomplishment is mixing both Ministry of Sound’s Electro House Sessions 4 and Pacha’s albums Summer Anthems 2011 and Pacha 2010 which includes his own ARIA chart hit “Tromba Ye Ye Ye.” He’s also got a few other #1 ARIA chart tracks such as “Sassafras” (2012) and “Snapback” (2013).

UK’s Simon Dunmore is the owner and founder of house music label Defected. He’s a man with a natural ability to see the potential in a record and take it to the top. Established back in 1999 and originally partnered with Ministry of Sound, the success of Defected Records was immediate with their first release, Soulsearcher’s ‘I Can’t Get Enough’ climbing to number eight in the UK single charts. Dunmore’s significant position in the industry evolved naturally and started in his teens with rockabilly infatuations. In 1989, while working as a music journalist and in a record store, Dunmore was presented with a position as promotions manager at Cooltempo; he then progressed into A&R which lead him to running A&M’s dance print AM:PM. With his multitude of skills and experiences with the major labels Dunmore launched his own company Defected in 1999.

Killer cool American rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club hail from San Francisco, California. Formed in 1998, the band was originally called The Elements but after discovering another band had the same name, they renamed themselves the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club from Marlon Brando’s motorcycle club in the 50s film The Wild One. Signed with Vagrant Records, the now LA-based trio is comprised of high school buddies Robert Been and Peter Haye with drummer Nick Jago from Devon, England. Inspired by The Rolling Stones, The Verve, Oasis and The Velvet Underground; they’ve got an addictive sound and edge that just seems to keep getting better.

ali is such an amazing place, it is not hard to believe that it attracts such a diverse range of people. Benny (as in The Jets), would have fit right in. One thing which has always set it apart from other resort destinations is that people go about their daily lives alongside the endless procession of tourists who drop by, take a dip, marvel at the traffic, shopping, food and the people, then head off again.

This week a 14-year-old Indonesian kid won a prize in Malaysia for inventing anti-assault shoes for women. The shoes are the musthaves these days in Bali, where crime is on the rise, and elsewhere. They’d be in high demand in India. The shoes are activated by the foot and they send out a 40 volt taser-like shot at the attacker. This is the sort of thing that Indonesians and the Balinese especially, are famous for; their ingenuity.

The foreigners who stay are what really makes it weird and wonderful. Most of them are doing something; traditionally it was garments or furniture, art or increasingly property. These days it could be anything from off-the-wall taps to decorations for your phone or tiny outfits for your dog. The things they do are almost as fascinating as the stuff they make.

Give them a stick and a couple of leaves and they’ll make a trailer. On the higher end, Balinese architects take primitive pieces and work them into contemporary designs that brighten up resort rooms and villas. It really is incredible and as a result there is nowhere else like Bali.

Some set up charities and some run their empires from their villas. It is hard to think of another place that contains so much activity and creativity and money making in one smallish island. You really can’t ever say Bali is boring.

The weirder it is, the more normal it seems here. So for all those who shake their heads and say, “wow, met some weird people in Bali,” there are others who nod and say, “hey, there’s a bunch of folks there I can really relate to.” There is no place like Bali and no matter what they do to it, it never fails to amaze. I was born and raised in Jakarta, both my parents came from the indigenous tribe of Toraja, a small island in the mountainous region of South Sulawesi. I pretty much had a fairy tale life in Jakarta. Growing up in one of the major cities in the world. I have been blessed with unconditional love by both parents who wanted nothing but the best for me and not to forget a very protective elder brother who is always looking out for me. What do you do at Hu’u? Explain it like you’re at war. I am the Sergeant Major of the Hu’u Marketing and Comms regiment. I covertly work behind a desk in a unspecified location in Seminyak. My job is to gather intelligence from unknown sources and carry out orders by the Chief as well as plan for the next move or target.

FEATURE What’s your favorite color? Explain why, how it makes you feel, and what it reminds you of. I have always loved the color black, well not in a morbid sense of it. In my opinion , it’s exude elegance and sexiness like this raw energy emanating from me. Yes! Cat woman.

A bunch of bikers enter Hu’u at the middle of a party and pretty much make up the entire crowd, the DJ runs away in fear. You’re in control of the decks now, what do you play and why? The first picture that comes to mind when I think of bikers is their handle bar moustaches, big burly men clad in black leather and heavily tattooed. So in comes this bunch of rebels, so I figured that to give balance to the vibe, yin and yang. Something catchy and upbeat. My best bet will be “YMCA” by the Village People. Well they need a break and a beer. Do you like cats? Explain. I am an animal lover. But I developed allergies when I was younger. It hurts me so much not to be able to be close to them. Elvis or the Beatles? Always been a fan of The Beatles. Tell us the greatest thing about working at Hu’u? What I love about this job and working at Hu’u is I get to meet people from all walks of life. Bali is a melting pot of culture. It is unpredictable in a good way. Furthermore I have cool employers and colleagues who work well together. What’s with the name Hu’u and how do you properly say it?

Describe your ideal day, the catch is you only have 200k to spend. An ideal day starts at 5am where I gear up for a 40 km cycle to halfway to Jimbaran. A sport I took up about a year ago. I feel a sense of exhilaration and adrenaline pump after a good workout. I have always loved cooking. Being Indonesian, my specialty is Indonesian cuisine. I can whip up a mean Beef Rendang from scratch. So that’s basically the morning. On days that I work, I spend a quarter of the day in the office. On the other hand, my off days are spent hanging out with good company catching up. The fact that I am health conscious means I religiously try to get eight hours of sleep every day. So my nights are mostly spent at home watching newly- released DVDs. How do you feel about the rampant polarization of Middle Eastern ethnic groups and its effect on sectarian conflicts in the region? A touchy subject I’m sure, but everyone has their own opinion on it. Conflicts have been going on way before the birth of Christ. Conflicts deep rooted between two parties with differences against ideology, race, beliefs, political differences but mostly religion. My heart goes out to them. I hope one day, everyone can put their differences aside and make peace. The world will be a better place. This is the end of the interview where you promote yourself and your company. A free-spirited creature who has a penchant for the finer things in life, I would very much say that Hu’u is a place to be. Le Meridien in Jimbaran is the perfect example of a modern urban resort, combining the best of a city hotel with a resort property.

Like so many things at this Le Meridien property, the restaurant is stylish and is bursting with great ideas. The drinks menu alone is enough to alert the diner to the subtle differences in this particular menu. A range of specialty drinks include some local favourites that have been refined for the hotel guest but

retain their authentic character. Bubble teas for instance that are made with tea, fresh fruits and herbs and the classic Asian favourite, tapioca pearls.Another example is the two exotic Javanese favourites; the Bajigur and the Bandrek. Warm, sweet and spicy they are welcome features for anyone who wants to experience local food and drinks. The menu mixes it up with a little Thai, some Perenakhan (a Malay-style hybrid cuisine), Chinese and Indonesian. Lunch and dinner feature food that is up front and lively. “The food here, like the chef, is not shy. The flavours are bold and they don’t hold back. If the authentic dish is spicy, it will be spicy, we don’t dumb it down for the tourists,” explains PR manager Angga. Our day begins with refreshing drinks, including a new one they are trialing, chunk ice cubes made from wild cherry with a bottle of soda water that is poured over the cubes to release the flavor, it packs a punch, like many of the menu items. This is followed by Vietnamese-style rice paper rolls with prawn and pork, served with a zesty dipping sauce with sweet chili and citrus. Beside is a Thai style prawn salad, spicy and vibrant, the prawns grilled to golden. The main course is a signature of the restaurant from the dinner menu. A pork hock that is braised in master stock for 16 hours before being fried to

crisp the skin. The deep, dark, sweet and spicy sauce is heavenly and the meat falls off the bones while the skin is dark and crisp. The portion is also huge and comes in medium to serve two to four or large to serve up to eight. It’s tempting to eat it all. Dessert is a buffet-style affair at lunch with a range of tiny cakes and puddings laid out on the large communal table in the centre of the restaurant. Little squares of cheesecake, Asian style puddings and perfectly cooked tiny pavlovas with fruit are among the selections. Bamboo Chic is bright and chic, overlooking the pool and out to the seafood restaurants. The style of the resort and the location makes it a perfect point from which to explore the local culinary scene, the shopping, the beach, the tourist spots and the out of the way, off the beaten track suggestions of the concierge. Bamboo Chic brings it all home. Getting the mix right is the sign of the experience behind this young resort, which is so cleverly designed you have to keep checking to convince yourself that they really have managed to pack so much style into this compact property. It’s well worth a visit and something so different for Jimbaran. Despite the urban tag, there are still a lot of Balinese features here. Things start to get out of control for The Counselor or anyone else in this thriller. With a tried and true director (Ridley Scott), an ensemble cast (Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt), and Cormac McCarthy in his screenplay debut, this ought to be one of the most violent and well thought out films of the year. If you liked No Country for Old Men, this movie is one you should pay close attention to.

An Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson plays Tim, a 21-year-old who learns from his charming father (Bill Nighy) that all men in his family can travel back in time. The film does not even need to tell us what he will do with it (it has something to do with love, actually). This movie looks like a date night winner. And by winner, we mean a romantic comedy that women will love and men can tolerate.

The path of pop history is littered with ‘buzz’ bands who crashed onto the scene with a debut that hit all the right notes, only to fizzle out after attempting to recreate that same album two or three more times. Remember Kaiser Chiefs? Von Bondies? The Kooks? It’s not to say that they were crap, more that pop’s fickle finger moves ever quicker pushing those buttons on the hype machine – not to mention a frothing record company looking to keep the revenues flowing. According to Franz Ferdinand front man Alex Kapranos, the three golden rules about how to stay in the game are; don’t go on tour too long, don’t go into the studio without any songs, and don’t stop talking to each other. By the time 2009’s laboured Tonight: Franz Ferdinand rolled round they’d broken all three, and subsequently came within a Brylcreem’d quiff of disbanding. Happily, the snappily-dressed Glasgow outfit seem to have learned their lesson and managed to sidestep the void by keeping Right Words… as lean as Kapranos’ cheek bones. The formula, it seems, is simple: Track average of three and a half minutes (clearly the correct scientific amount of time a pop song should last), groovy riffs that are catchier than a bag of fishing rods, and clutch of sunny harmonies that disguise a mix of existential panic and wry observations on the British condition. “Sometimes I wish you were here, weather permitting” croons Kapranos on the kicking “Right Words”, but the real guilty pleasure is follow up “Evil Eye”, which fuses choppy guitars with 50’s sci-fi kitsch and B-movie horror show ambiance (check out the video for a deliciously gory treat). As usual, the light and dark sides of love and sex are major themes throughout – particularly on “Love Illumination” (“We’re all looking for somebody to love”) and the nonchalant bounce of “Brief Encounters”, which takes place at a seedy suburban swinger’s party at the end of “a certain cul-de-sac”. The dreary reality: “We all choose our partners/We all choose our keys”, and ultimately there’s no real gratification: “Yeah, let’s pretend”. Perhaps the best moment comes on album closer “Goodbye Lovers & Friends”, where, having just churned out 35 minutes of almost faultless pop music, Kapranos declares wickedly: “So don’t play pop music/you know I hate pop music”, before ending the song with the line “This really is the end”. I think it’s pretty safe to say that he’s taking the piss. Archduke Dan Ashcroft.

NVIDIA, best known for its GPUs, has just announced its latest offering – a portable, handheld gaming console dubbed Project Shield. Running on NVIDIA’s just-announced Tegra 4 chip – the world’s fastest mobile processor – the new console promises up to 38 hours of gaming pleasure, superb audio performance, and a seamless experience on the Android OS. Resembling a console controller with a built-in HD screen, the new system features a micro SD slot, USB port, standard audio jack and HDMI output for a high-definition connection to any HD screen. Specifications aside, this ambitious console aims to redefine mobile gaming, promising a seamless experience with your computer and any games you might own from Steam’s vast games library as well as NVIDIA’s Tegrazone game store. NVIDIA has offered tantalizingly few details but expect the new console to deliver sometime later this year. $299.00

Microsoft Announces the Official Release Date for the Xbox One

After Sony announced its next-gen console will be available starting November 15, Microsoft unveiled that its Xbox One will release on November 22 – one week before the retail craze of black Friday and exactly eight years after the release of the Xbox 360. In addition to publicizing its release date, Microsoft blogged that the latest Xbox CPU will be increased to 1.75GHz – a 10 percent increase from its original specifications. Although Sony has yet to officially detail the PlayStation 4’s CPU speed, it’s rumored to be upwards of about 2.75GHz. The Xbox One will retail at $100 USD more than its counterpart, but will also come with a Kinect system as opposed to Sony’s camera being sold separately.

While the rubber nip is easy to replace, its brass metal body is solid, yet light, and coated with a comfortable rubber grip. Barnes & Noble’s Nook is a frontrunner in its class, presently getting an upgrade in the form of the Nook Glowlight. This light, versatile tablet comes outfitted with a 6″ display, a battery life extended to around eight weeks, and a high-resolution E Ink® display – which renders digital pages as close to the real thing as possible. Harman Kardon recently released a new pair of no-hassle stereo speakers designed to connect to and stream audio from just about anything. Called the Nova Stereo Streaming Sound System, the speakers feature sleek semi-translucent closures that contains a 2.5-inch driver and a 1.25-inch tweeter as well as a passive bass radiator, and Harman Kardon’s proprietary Digital Single Processing. In addition to both physical analog and optical inputs to connect to HDTV, Apple TV and the like, the speakers use Bluetooth to stream to laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones. The system is controllable via the Harman Kardon Remote app available for iProducts and Android phones. The $300 Nova system is currently available for purchase through the brand’s website.

Sony PlayStation Vita TV Connects Seamlessly to Home Entertainment

As we near the November release of its next-gen console, Sony takes to the web to unveil its latest creation – the Playstation Vita TV. This 60mm x 100mm gadget connects to your PlayStation 4 serving as a multimedia streaming console that plays Vita games, Sony’s Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited, Hulu, karaoke and so much more. With up to 1,300 games available at the time of its release, Sony further mentioned “a future system update” will allow users to use Vita TV in separate rooms of your home from which the PS4 console is located to stream PS4 and Vita games. Priced at about $100 USD, this piece of hardware includes ports for HDMI and Ethernet cables as well as an external memory card opening, a slot for Vita games, and a USB port. Bali’s recent Apec conference saw Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto officially open ‘Miguel Covarrubias and Bali’; an exhibition dedicated to Mexican artist and anthropologist Miguel Covarrubias who lived and worked in Bali in the early 1930s. Not only an artist; Covarrubias was a cartoonist, ethnologist and even directed a Ballet in his artistically consumed lifetime. Covarrubias also wrote ‘Island of Bali’ the exceptional compendium on Balinese art and culture which remains as creative and informative as it did 75 years ago. The exhibition features 115 drawings, paintings and photographs that reveal the multi mediums and distinctive series of works by the talented Mexican artist. Ganesha Gallery presents Body Noiseless Conversation; a group photography exhibition showcasing mainly collaboration between Komang Totok Parwata and Rudi Vaishnava along with various pieces from three other photographers. The artists explore a lot of the body as an object; using lighting and colouring techniques as inspiration for the work environment. Parwata focuses on the effects of global warming on earth and the destruction of nature reveals an influential theme in Komang’s work. Vaishnava chooses wood as his print media with his photos being candid, with no additional light added and an obvious approach to natural use of light. llustrator and painter Naomi Samara spent her childhood in Bali and was brought up in a very creatively powerful family environment which included a painter for a grandmother and very open minded parents. Her schooling was spent between Sydney and Chiang Mai and her initial career desires had Naomi commence a Bachelor of Fashion Design program at RMIT Melbourne which she then decided to discontinue and moved back to Bali.

It was Naomiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s constant strong engagement as a regular observer of the world mixed with her own physical and emotional urges and desires by colliding personal worlds that became the main inspiration behind her works and the often extremely feminine and sexually influenced figures in her works. Naomi explores many art mediums but commonly uses with ink on paper of acrylic on canvas for her very encapsulating and mind awakening works. Between channeling her own inspirations into masterpieces, Naomi also established and runs Swoon Gallery; a small Sanur based art gallery that showcases monthly group exhibitions by a generation of playful, inventive and incredibly creative art makers like herself. a gripping and high flying finale in the 1-star ASP/6star ASC Taiwan Open of Surfing Men’s Open Division yesterday, Japan’s June Chiiba came from behind in the dying minutes to overtake fellow Japanese finalist Yujiro Tsuji by throwing out a combination of carves, hacks, floaters and an impressive air reverse on a well chosen set wave to post the final’s top score of 8.30 (out of a possible 10) points and overtake Tsuji for the win. Final score was Chiiba’s 16.97 points to Tsuji’s 14.04 points. The highest placing ASC surfer was Indonesia’s Dede Suryana, who made it into the semifinals but went down to a hard charging Yujiro Tsuji by a final score of 10.17 point to Tsuji’s 12.60, needing a wave score of 7.43 to overtake Tsuji when time ran out. 48 surfers from countries including Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Africa, and the USA came to Taiwan to compete in this historic and ground breaking ASP event, the first time the ASP has held an event in Taiwan and the first time

the ASP has joined with the ASC to co-sanction a professional surfing competition. In addition to the 1-star ASP/6star ASC Men’s Open Division competition held over the three day period from 15-17 November at the 3rd annual Taiwan Open of Surfing, there was also an ASC 1-star Women’s Division, an ASC 1-star Longboard Division, the North Pacific Noserider Pro Invitational competition, a Junior Division, and a Tag Team Competition to complete a very full weekend at Jinzun Harbor. A total of 48 competitors joined the Longboard Division, 16 in the Women’s Division, 8 in the Junior Division, and 18 in the North Pacific Noserider Pro Invitational.
