The wet season is fine if you don’t have a leaking roof. The trouble is I do. But I am working on getting that part of the roof fixed. Just about every day lately I get the guy over to move this, add that, just trying to find the trouble spot and get it watertight. Sometimes it doesn’t take much, just a tile moved back or forward until the right place is found or a little piece of galvanized sheeting put in the right place and voila, all fixed. It shouldn’t be like that. Everything should be done the correct way at the beginning and all should be fine. But it doesn’t appear to be that way with my roof. The trouble is we don’t live in a perfect world and sometimes things go a little haywire right from the beginning. I’ve had my 16-year-old teenage daughter visiting from Australia over the past weeks. It’s incredible how quickly they grow up. Last time she was here she was still my little girl; quiet, innocent, unsure and untrusting of what was outside the perimeter walls of the house. Now, there is no holding her and her teenage friend who is also visiting, back. They want it all and they want it now. They don’t want the sophistication of Seminyak, no way, they want Kuta. They want the wild end of town. They want the wild life. I suppose we all do at that age – set free and go wild. That sophistication stuff is all about the oldies and a little bit boring in their minds. The action for them is down there in the wildness of Kuta with all the young crew going mad together. There are a lot of people who instantly write-off Kuta as some kind of nemesis, but the fact is it does serve a purpose for many visitors to this island and let’s not forget that. As we’ve said before if they could just sort out the traffic and the taxi mafia down there, it may well attract more of a cross section of Bali society. SCOOP Bali lowers tourist arrivals target for 2014 The provincial government of Bali has set its target for foreign tourist arrivals at 3 million for 2014. This is slightly lower than arrivals total in 2013, which amounted to 3.1 million foreign tourists. The target was officially released by Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika, during the provincial government’s year-end conference recently. He added the target of 3 million should not be seen as a decrease, for in 2013 Bali hosted many international events attended by thousands of foreign guests.

Garuda has internet between Bali and Jakarta Garuda Indonesia and PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia signed a memorandum of understanding to bring InFlight Connectivity services in a fleet of Airbus A – 330 series. Telkom is providing the internet service to Garuda Indonesia in accordance with a permit issued by the Minister of Communication and Information. Services Director of Garuda Indonesia, Faik Fahmi, said the presence of “Inflight Connectivity” facilities in the A330 series aircraft is the further development of similar services previously presented in the company’s entire fleet of Boeing 777-300 ER, which are already in operation. DJs From Mars is an Italian duo comprising of Massimiliano Garino aka Max Aqualuce and Luca Emanuele Ventafridda aka Luca Ventafunk. Both were born in Turin in the late 70s and have been calling the Italian city their base for contaminating the world of dance ever since they got together. Young Aqualuce and Ventafunk first met each other in Bliss Corporation, an Italian label famous for the project of Eiffel65 in the late 90s and eventually, after many tracks and years passed by, the two made it a team in 2004.

It is also worthy to note that the duo, whose trademark is wearing cardboard boxes on their heads while playing live, is also growing their hype in the US especially in Las Vegas where they have a longstanding residency at the city’s globally renowned Hard Rock Cafe. They continue making and breaking remixes of the biggest stars, releasing their own smash hit tracks and travelling the world bringing their carton boxed alien world shows to all parts of the planet.

After having lots of fans, DJ Mikey decided to co-create Danceflo Productions. Through Danceflo, DJ Mickey arranged unique parties throughout Jakarta. He did not turn his back on the chance to have an international career. DJ Mikey performed in Levende Lounge, San Fransisco and Boardners Club, Hollywood during his college years in the US. His exclusive electro sets have also been blasted at Poison Club in India and Hacienda Lounge in Singapore. As a result, DJ Mikey was invited to Mumbai’s Future DJ Music Academy as a guest speaker and performer.

With time, support and also an extensive record collection from their father who was a DJ in South Korea in his early twenties, they blossomed.

From 2005 until late 2009, the sisters managed to drop three studio albums and were able to open for acts like Angels & Airwaves on their national tour as well as a few appearances in Europe. They successfully released their fourth album entitled Cocoon in 2011. In an attempt to promote this album nationally, Dia opted to go on the first season of The Voice on NBC as a contestant. There, she did not only get to promote her and her sister’s album but also her original single entitled “Inventing Shadows” written by Fraser T Smith who has co-written, produced and mixed a number of big hits in the UK and US such as Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain”, James Morrison’s “Broken Strings”, and Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart”. It went on to top the iTunes chart for digital songs and she later on won the title of Entertainment Weekly’s ‘Favourite Reality Show Personality’ in 2011. Following her eventual runner-up position in The Voice, Dia released her solo single and album, “The Broken Ones” and Red respectively that same year. The single debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart in the US, while the album has gone platinum in Asia. She is currently working on her second solo studio album.

There is a Chinese saying that good things come in pairs and this holds true with Zev and Gadi, besides tolerating each other for long periods of time, all aspects of their operations to date which include production, DJ gigs and owning a record label. From their famous home base in New York’s Marcy Hotel, Wolf + Lamb has played the game really well right from the word go, by producing feet and heart-moving tracks such as “A Place To Fall Apart”, “Any Day Now”, “Evacuease”, “Holding Her and Loving You” and “MAS”, all in 2006 alone. Then, 2008 saw them releasing their first EP entitled “Bear Valley”, showcasing their breakthrough into the vinyl market as well as their move from techno to house. Zev and Gadi drew inspiration from each other as well as from other collaborators in their label, Wolf + Lamb eventually dropped their debut artist album entitled Love Someone in June 2010 and their second two years later entitled Versus. Both feature unreleased tracks and generous doses of sounds by their label’s artists like Voices of Black, Night Plane, PillowTalk, Greg Paulus of No Regular Play as well as Soul Clap. The recently released Wolftrax Vol 1 is another killer collection of hot and tight, funked out tracks.

FEATURE ow many of us have extraordinary lives? Or aspire to them. In biblical times the period following the Christmas season ends on January 6 in what is known as the feast of the epiphany, the day of the Kings.

What follows was known as “Ordinary Time”, a period where we have the opportunity to be who we really are following a period of celebration and rejuvenation over the new year. How ordinary is it though? As we are into a new year and our resolutions have been made and possibly set aside already, we all now have the chance to take what we have learned on the journey of life and put it into practice in our ordinary lives. Ordinary takes on a new meaning when applied in this context. Ordinary, meaning what is commonplace or standard, usual, routine and so on, doesn’t imply by definition, less than great, successful, outstanding; if that is your norm, or what you aspire to be. Nothing says you have to be less than what you can be, ordinary just means what you ordinarily are. That also does not mean you can’t reinvent your own ordinary. Maybe you were a secretary and hated your job. Your new ordinary is to start your own business and enjoy freedom, happiness and a new lease on life, your new ordinary. What is ordinary to you may seem extraordinary to someone else, it is a matter of perspective. While you may think another is doing great compared to you, they may feel less than fulfilled in their own mind. Comparing ourselves to others is fruitless and less than constructive. We create our own parameters for success, and why not? This is your life, how will you live it, what do you want, how happy can you make the people you love, how successfully do you relate to the world and it to you? These are the questions we ponder as the year changes over and we have the chance to begin again. How ordinary are you? Only you can tell. Hard Rock Café Don’t mess with success.

hat’s not to like about a concept that has earned the right to accolades and queues? Hard Rock Café opened in Bali in 1995 and still draws the crowds, day and night. The mixture of hand-made classic American cooking (Southern-style) with rock and roll is timeless and seems to have always existed for us. The Bali venue holds true to the traditions and is checked each year by quality control experts from Hard Rock international, earning a healthy 95% approval record on their last check. The burgers are legendary and hard to go past, despite the fact that the menu is huge and filled with both classic and modern items. From pulled pork on the classic smokehouse menu, based on old-style Southern recipes, to mile high sandwiches and giant US-style salads, the menu screams America but in Bali, they’ve laid in a few local favourites as well. The number one item on the menu is the Legendary Burger, a whopping 10 ounces (yep, they still use ounces) of Australian Angus beef topped with seasoned bacon, cheddar cheese (or you can opt for the bright orange American one), crisp, fried onions and lettuce. In Bali alone they sell 25,000 portions a year! For anyone, finishing this is a massive accomplishment and throw in a side of hand-cut fries, and I defy anyone to clean the plate.

It’s been a bumper year for music, and with albums in the pipeline from the likes of Kasabian, Ceelo Green, Beck, Elbow, Johnny Marr, Paolo Nutini, Jack White and Keith Richards, 2014 looks set to be even more massive. Here, in no particular order is what got us rockin’ in the free world in 2013. Dan Ashcroft. Arctic Monkeys - AM Fifth long player from Sheffield’s finest marks the completion of Arctic Monkeys from spotty northern chavs who can’t get girlfriends, to leather jacket clad purveyors of sexy rock and/or roll. Here, Alex Turner & Co. deliver a ‘best of’ from the previous three albums; nicely varied and perfectly executed by a band at the peak of their powers. London Grammar If You Wait Heartstopping vocals and a beautifully layered, rich soundscape of soft pianos, gentle synths and subdued percussion all add up to a well deserved Mercury nomination for the London trio. Tame Impala - Lonerism One of the few bands in recent years to have ‘nailed’ psychedelica – giving a tip of the cap to The Floyd, Sgt. Pepper et al, and making it all sound fresh and vital again. As far as 60’s revivals go, “Lonerism” is damn near perfect. Foals Holy Fire Starting off as a groovy, marimba infused slice of discoish pop, central track Inhaler is the standout from this solid effort from the band of the moment. At 1 minute and 49 seconds the whole thing goes mental, exploding into a chorus that sounds more Tom Morello or Dave Navarro than five pasty lads from the home counties with short guitar straps.

Empire of the Sun - Ice on the Dune Described by the Sydney duo as a “post apocalyptic adventure” (isn’t everything these days?) Ice on the Dune is brimming with doeswhat-it-says-on-the-tin song titles like ‘Surround Sound”, “Awakening” and “Celebrate” that will soften even the hardest disco-pop haters. Queens of the Stone Age - Like Clockwork… Muscular riffs and subtly sinister vocals abound on Josh Homme’s dark masterpiece best demonstrated on first single “My God is the Sun” and “Smooth Sailing”. The measured, fuzzy bassline of curtain raiser “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” and the whackedout groove of “I Sat By The Ocean” is as good as anything on 2002 watershed Songs For The Deaf. The Civil Wars - The Civil Wars Infinitely lovely bluegrass from Californian Joy Williams and Tennessee dandy John Paul White. Americana at it’s very best.

David Bowie The Next Day Contrary and complex work with overtones of death and notions of Bowie’s own mortality, but regardless, the overall impression of Bowie’s 24th LP is one of an invigorated and revitalized pop master doing what he does best. Yeah Yeah Yeahs Mosquito Gleefully romping through gospel, rap, electronica, calypso, and their default DIY garage rock, fourth LP Mosquito finds the achingly cool New York trio of Karen O, Nick Zinner and Bryan Chase continuing the migration away from the straight up punk of early material,refined on 2008’s It’s Blitz, and perfected here. Pearl Jam Lightning Bolt The kind of measured study in integrity and poise that only two decades of experience can bring, Lightning Bolt won’t win any awards for innovation, but in paying homage to PJ’s core style it proves a remarkably relevant effort.

Ryan was born in Jakarta and currently living in Jogjakarta to pursue his study at Institute of Art Indonesia. His journey started with his desire to be a graphic designer. Three years elapsed, and his urge led him on another road. He started to draw on canvas and joined numerous local art shows, without a further thought he fell deeper into the world of art. His art is influenced by many things, but the most notable comes from the skateboard scene such as deck graphics, as well as the icons related to it including Bones Brigade and Santa Cruz. The music scene, especially punk, gave him a big influence. The works by well-known artists such as Jim Phillip, Barry McGee and Ed Templeton has also taken a part, giving him more inspiration. Ryan does not limit the style of his art. He explores more and more ideas, widening his vision in art. Ryan sees everything as an inspiration, starting from his surroundings to global issues. He draws

the phenomenon on a piece of paper with his Indian ink and brush. He translates it by his own words, trying to tell people what the youth think about yesterday, today or their dreams about future. He tries to convey a message what they do today might be useful in the future, although it seems ‘petty’ for many. The drawings are transferred into other mediums such as canvas, batik, silkscreen and more including a gallery’s wall. An exhibition titled “Can’t Grow Up” marked his international debut. He was able to show his art together with his idols such as Michael Sieben, Dennis McNett and Jim Phillip. Ryan is currently exhibiting his works at Deus Gallery, Canggu. The exhibition is titled “Permanent Vacation”. When many are too comfortable with their vacation, they finally decided to stay and create a relationship with their surroundings; a storyline that can be related to his journey.

Cozy is a great place to get a relaxing massage for those of you who want to relieve stress, get some pampering, or get some much needed relief while you’re expecting. LOOK It might be situated on one of Bali’s highways, Sunset Road, but Cozy is far from as stressful as its surroundings. The building is three-storeys tall with parking at the front. A fountain and wooden door will greet you at the entrance to a large lobby with comfortable couches. White and blue colors dominate the building which has cool semi-minimalist interiors, offering a comforting atmosphere once you step inside. FEEL Cozy has more than a few treatments including their “Mom to Be Indulgence”, a massage technique devoted to pregnant women. This technique was created by Cozy’s owners Debbie and Ina based on Debbie’s own experience on her first three months of pregnancy. Expecting mothers are placed on their side and a lot of hand pressure is used because Cozy believes that preganant women are likely to be more exhausted and generally have more tension. The massage starts from the tip of foot and continued to the body including shoulder and hip. Sensitive areas such as the abdomen are not included in this technique so that it won’t harm the mother and her baby. The aromatherapy together with dimmed lights help relax during the treatment. Soft traditional music flows, allowing your body and mind to fall into the oasis of peace.

INGREDIENTS Cozy’s own body butter cream is used for the massage. The results are so good with its moisturizing benefits and softens the skin. The treatment can also be continued with body scrubbing which use their own cream with scents such as almond, oatmeal, black tea and brown rice; available only at Cozy. MAGIC The staff are excellently trained and give each part of the body a timed period to work on. The therapy session is, as with most others, is 90 minutes long. They recommend the treatment be done once a week with other options such as foot reflexology or head massage which also uses different techniques for the pregnant women. With the rates starting from 159k to 199k, expecting moms can enjoy delightful moments with a healthier body and mind.
