It’s already the second half of February and it seems like 2013 was only yesterday. Traditionally, the waning days of February have been considered the doldrums when it comes to the amount of tourists and events happening around the island, but one look at this issue and you can most certainly tell that times are changing. It almost makes you wonder what kind of absolute insanity this high season is going to bring us. Part of us wants the fun crowds and the vibrancy it brings to the island while the other part dreads the traffic and, well, the crowds. We have a new fashion director and if you flip over to our style pages, you will most definitely notice that she has brought our photo shoots to a whole new level. Our hats are off to her. I recently participated in a beach clean-up. Even if your head is stuck in the sand, you’ll notice that high winds coming in from the west has strewn the beach with a plethora of garbage just about every morning. We wish there was a simple solution, but there is none. Throwing your trash in the bin doesn’t quite cut it if the contents of the bin are said to be stripped of it recyclables and unceremoniously dumped into a river. Let’s not hope every time, but The Beat implores you to minimize the plastic you use. We know it’s pretty much impossible to be plastic free and bringing your own bag shopping is but a molecule of a solution in an ocean of problems, but every tiny bit helps. If you check out the magazine, you’ll notice an excellent interview with DJ Diamond. We kind of threw the whole post apocalyptic rise of the machines theme at her just to see what we would get back and her answers were nothing short of amazing. We highly recommend you check her out at Sky Garden, and just about everything else in the What’s On, HereNow and Regular Events sections inside. It’s all there, check it out and have a great couple of weeks till the start of March.

Osunlade is a house DJ and producer hailing from the city of St. Louis, Missouri. Born in 1969, he first sank his teeth into musical instruments at the age of seven, with piano being the first one, then followed by drum, bass and guitar. His talents became apparent in school which saw him become the president of his school band playing trumpet. In 1988, Osunlade travelled to Los Angeles where he met Tony ‘Mickey’ Basil who made him the music composer for a B-movie called Rockula and our favorite show, Sesame Street.

In LA, he continued to work for some major labels, producing scores for artists. Some of his masterpieces back then include Gerardo’s Latin pop track “Rico Suave” (1991), Freddie Jackson’s “Was It Something” (1994) and Nadirah Shakoor’s “Love Song” (2006). Still, during those years, his soul kept yearning to truly follow his passion and so Osunlade founded his own music label called Yoruba Records in 1999 after he got anointed as a priest of Ifá, a Yoruban way of life. Two years later, he came out full force by dropping his debut album entitled Paradigm, turned him into a messiah of ancestral house music and led to clubs all over the world. With a few albums already released, including his latest hit album in 2013 entitled A Man With No Past Originating The Future, he still has blazing hot DJ sets, singles and mixed compilations as well as an online radio show, freely available on the his label’s website.

He then made appearances in venues such as The Cross, Bagleys, Club UK, Turnmills and Ministry of Sound where he really began to master his spinning talent.

He is now a part of The Str8jackets, producing and remixing for labels including Hed Kandi, Nervous, Vicious, Time Records and Discopolis. He is also working in collaborations with artists such as Taylor Dayne, Sam Obernik, Inaya Day, Dawn Tallman, Tyree Cooper, MC Chickaboo, Sharon Phillips and Calvin Lynch. His latest works with The Str8jackets include “Air” by Tiger Milk, “Alive Again” by Rebeka Brown and “Body Language” by Mimran.

Beto Cohen, best known as Betoko is a London-based DJ who has quickly risen through the ranks since first emerging in 2007. Born in Mexico, he started to play guitar and drum in bands from the age of 12 and went on to co-founding a modelling agency and production company at the age of 20. He moved to London in 2002 where he discovered his passion for electronic sounds. He possessed an ingenious musical talent that finally led him to be placed on the list among other esteemed DJs on Mar-T’s label, Wow! Records. He has spun at numerous European’s clubs including Fabric (London), Amnesia, Uhaia (Ibiza) and Kater Holzig (Berlin). This Vietnamese-born Australian DJ is recognized and known as a pioneer of Sydney’s clubbing industry. Sirdee started back in 2006 when he collaborated with Australia’s top club promoters which landed him with residential and rotational gigs on a weekly basis. In 2009, he respectively withdrew his status as a DJ to focus on his event companies Nojon Entertainment and Double-D Entertainment. His organizational skills have seen him being involved with many club events across Australia. In 2012, he finally returned to DJing and embraced the new RnB and hip-hop mashup revolution. Influenced by the likes of Tiesto, David Guetta and Calvin Harris, he also has produced numerous original blends and mashups of RnB pop with house beats.

He is now back in high demand, breaking into the international market and having been featured at clubs in Philippines, Thailand and right here in Bali.

Copyright is an act consisting of two London-based house music producers. They are Sam Holt and Gavin ‘Face’ Mills, two lads who made a pact to conquer London after they were introduced to each other by a mutual friend in the mid-90s. Sam had played at Hacienda up north in Manchester as a DJ, while having an illustrious career in advertising, whereas Gavin, no stranger to London’s rave culture by then, spun multi genre tracks from one venue to another.

Soon, they got the ball rolling and signed to Defected Records creating their Copyright Recordings in 2004. They did soundtracks for high-profile campaigns by the likes of Sport England and Toyota. In 2008, the duo released their debut album entitled Voices and Visions which harbored their anthem of the year “Wizeman”. That year also marked their first Radio 1 Essential Mix. In the wake of all that, Copyright got to headline Defected’s 10th anniversary, play their residential gigs at Pacha Ibiza, and were on Defected in the House – a curated night for the iTunes Festival at London’s legendary Roundhouse venue in July 2010 – where they shared the stage with Underworld and the XX. Copyright’s notoriety on the road also earned them the honor to mix the Miami in the House 07 compilation, a piece of work that sold over 30k copies worldwide. Last May and June, they were bound again for more Defected in the House events with some held in the UK, Eindhoven and Frankfurt.

The song has even been remixed by DJ Krunk! from Australia, whose remixes very frequently hit ARIA and Beatport Top 40 charts. Shortly after, The Twins got a few more Top 20 hits with their debut track “Body” with Israel Cruz and later on with their solo single entitled “Coming Home” released in 2013. The latter has even received a stellar treatment by two widely-acclaimed remixers such as Bass Kleph and Maison & Dragen. Music aside, the girls are also deeply exploring the ideas of designing their own boutique clothing range as well as mixing one of Australia’s biggest radio shows.

Tell us about yourself. Start at your conception all the way to your future self in 2057, after Judgement Day, when the machines become self aware. I was born and raised in Hawaii because both of my parents were surfers. My father was also a magician so I started performing at an early age on stage as his assistant. I had always loved performing in front of people so when my love of house music developed it made since to become a DJ. I first got a degree in Sports Medicine but quickly dropped that career and bought turntables and taught myself how to DJ. I’ve DJ’d in over 40 countries in the last 13 years and have released several tracks, one making it to the top on Beatport. My new track “Holding My Heart Out” is being released this March on Pyramid Recordings. It will be 2057 and I’ll be gray and old but I will be making people dance all over the world. Being a DJ that uses musical machines, I hope there will be a nice harmony together with the Machines if they become self aware to create good music, just like two artists collaborating together on a track, there will be a collaboration between machine and artist. 2. How would you use your DJ skills to resist the machines? My music would cause so much joy and happiness that the machines would have to succumb to it and dance along with humans, there will be no resistance, only working together to make good music and make people enjoy life (as you can see I’m a real positive kind of girl). 3. Do you think machines can even conceptualize music? In the form of data there is a conceptual connection, a sort of communication of input and output, but not in the form of creating music, that requires imagination which a machine wouldn’t have. Only humans have the ability to dream, imagine, and create from that. 4. If we’re fighting the machines, what would you DJ with? The only kind of “fight” I can think of would be a DJ battle. No machine can be able to show expression and showmanship so I would use my ability to entertain as a performer. Any machine can learn a technical skill like pushing a button, but not the ability to show expression and entertain through performance.

5. If the machines were to capture you and ask what style of music do you spin, how would you answer? All forms of EDM, depends on where and who I’m playing for. I play to my crowd to make them dance. Most often its progressive house and/or electro house. 6. If the machines made you their official event planner and that they would bring back any musician or DJ from 2014 with their time machine, who would you select? Why? Currently Hardwell, I love his production and he is a nice guy! 7. So the machines send you back in time to change the course of music history, what do you do? Take away the computer programs that allow “DJs” to sync their mixes live without having to beat match. I believe a DJ should use their ears to mix not use programs to beat match for them. 8. Is there anything else you want to add to this epic saga of the time you spent with the machines? Besides helping to create world peace and end all hate and suffering, the Machines, in the field of music, will work together with humans to create new sounds and instruments for all to enjoy. Also, the technology for those who have no hearing will be so improved that not being able to hear will be a thing of the past. 9. This is where you promote yourself, but to keep with the overall theme of this interview, pretend you’re talking to a machine. In actuality I am talking to a machine, I’m typing on my Mac computer as I write this so... I’m currently traveling the world, I have shows in Japan, Bali, India and Brazil coming up within the next two months along with the release of my new track “Holding My Heart Out”. A haven for thrill-seeking holiday makers looking to get their kicks from an array of outdoor pursuits, the centre houses a booking office, gift shop, gallery, spa, deli and coffee shop bakery. Sitting at the centre of this all-encompassing complex lies the brand new Yanie’s Restaurant – the perfect spot to fill up after a hard day outdoors. The expansive restaurant premises takes in a Japanese sushi bar and spacious lounge and BBQ area, which leads through to the chilled out ambience of the alfresco semi-fine dining deck. Pick your table and flick through a vast menu that draws upon the best elements of Western, Asian, Japanese and Indonesian cuisine. After a wild morning on the rapids of the Sayan River, my friend and I arrive back at the centre soaked and stoked, but more than anything completely famished. We set up at a table in the lounge and immediately delve into the menu, fully intent on going the whole three courses. For the starters, my friend picks the delectable-sounding Salmon Caesar Cobb (79k) and I get stuck into a bowl of the White Tomato Soup (55k).The salmon comes pan fried in dill herbs, served

alongside a salad drizzled in tangy Caesar dressing, and my soup is a wonderfully creamy combination of tomatoes and crunchy bacon bits. A unique process of chopping and chilling the tomatoes to separate the juice gives the broth it’s distinctive white colour, and intense flavour. For the main events, we take inspiration and recommendation from the house favourite Spicy Duck Breast (145k) and Nigel’s pick: the Chateaubriand a

la Maison (285k). Intent to get a flavour of both, we share out the generous portions of seared English duck breast and succulent imported Aussie Black Angus tenderloin, unable to decide which of the two is the winner – they are both superb. To finish with, I can’t go past the indulgent Warm Flourless Chocolate Cake (55k), and we’re also advised to check out Nigel’s newest addition to the menu; the classic Aussie treat of a Vanilla Slice (20k). The result of much research, the slices are light and fluffy with a perfect vanilla custard filling,and are as good as anything you’d find in the local bakery back home. Happily stuffed, we retire to the outside terrace with a couple of celebratory cocktails (129k each) in the form of a Bananarama (Baileys, Kahlua, Galiano, milk & banana) and a frozen Daiquiri (Bacardi rum, triple sec, simple syrup and strawberries) to watch the light fade and reflect on an epic day of adventure.

Cast: A l e x Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde, Robert Patrick, Bruce Greenwood, Joely Richardson. The love is endless; the remake might be endless too. For those of you who have watched the movie of the same name in 1981, this 2014 version is the second adaptation of the Scott Spencer novel. So yeah, innocent girl meets older dude, they fall in love, dude has a bunch of skeletons in his closet. Sure, it’s a bit different though from the 1981 version, director, Shana Feste makes it simpler and more contemporary with less explicit scenes.. However, all in all, it’s still about two star-crossed lovers where social standing stands in the love’s way. Yay...

In spite of this muddle of genres, everyone’s favourite festival must-see’s have always seemed on the brink of emerging with an album to suit their image. 2011’s A Different Kind of Fix was getting there and danced around the borders of indie/ dance terrain, but So Long, See You Tomorrow develops the theme to a much more satisfying end. From the multifaceted psychedelic racket of ‘Overdone’ (more strings! more cowbell! more everything!) onwards, So Long, See You Tomorrow is perhaps not the most original of albums out there right now, but it’s arguably one whose execution requires no small amount of skill. Eighteen months in the making, So Long… showcases a band who are much more comfortable in their own skin, and are clearly enjoying themselves immensely after a period of inspiration that has taken in some extensive globe-trotting and one or two side projects. The key notes arrive in the form of tracks like “Carry Me” and the wonderful “Home By Now”, which gleefully mashes up programmed beats with a shoe gaze melody and dreamy vocals that toe the line beautifully between electronic and pure indie elements. “Luna” does a similar trick, Jack Steadman’s earnest vocals oddly reminiscent of a more upbeat Damien Rice. For those wondering what Bombay has to do with anything, “Feel” answers the question with an incessant Hindi beat set to euphoric strings, but keep an ear out elsewhere for subtler flourishes of Subcontinent verve; a flute here, a tabla there – the effect is nicely contemporary without being overbearingly Bollywood style. Wrapping up proceedings is the drowsy downtempo title track,that for over four minutes plays out like a Glastonbury lullaby, before slapping you awake two-thirds of the way through with a final two minutes of squeaky dance tangents that is one of the many magic moments that punctuate the album. GIZMOS Polaroid Socialmatic Concept Camera to Become a Reality in 2014

Polaroid has announced that it will release a social media and insta-print camera dubbed “Socialmatic” in 2014, a concept that was originally unveiled back in 2012. The Android-based Socialmatic is equipped with a 14 megapixel front-facing and 2 megapixel backfacing camera. The camera’s built-in Wi-Fi allows captured images to be uploaded directly to social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+ and more – and the ink-less on-board printer allows for 2×3 sticker prints to be processed on the move. Featuring a retro design and a 4.5-inch touchscreen, the Socialmatic is expected to be released in fall 2014. Mark One: The World’s First Carbon Fiber 3D Printer Named for Aeromotions owner Gregory Mark, the Mark One represents – more or less – a “luxury” version of your prototypical 3D printer, but instead of printing in plastic, the machine is fully capable of creating carbon fiber models. Making its debut at San Diego’s Solid Works World 2014, the Mark One is billed as “the world’s first desktop printer capable of printing composite materials.” Thus, it doesn’t stop at carbon fiber – the printer can even create pieces in fiberglass, nylon and PLA. Arya Pandjalu T

he ‘bird man’ Arya Pandjalu started in Yogyakarta and now he has spread his wings to the international art scene through his distinctive works. His art focuses on social and personal narratives which he tells through installation, print making, painting, sculpture, photography, video and performance. Arya is one Indonesian artist that creates work using a humanoid creature alter ego. The avian humanoid—a cross between man and bird—has become his singular identity. The alter ego creature is a reflection of his childhood when he used to hunt for birds; a regret toward his bad treatment which has sharpened his empathy toward the creature and grown his awareness on environmental issues. He has often presented paintings and drawings in his past works showing the avian-humanoid with its bird head and mutated human body.

The bird’s head in his current work appears as a tough costume helmet he wears himself. In his other works, he also shows a ‘self-maturation’ where he appears confidently without the alter ego helmet. He appears to be more established in communicating his environmental wisdom without having to position himself as a green bird. He uses various media to convey his ideas, but lately his focus has shifted to paper. He finds paper a simple and environmental friendly media. He also shows that paper is not as ‘weak’ as it seems; it is not an inferior material but is able to make a strong and sturdy works. In 2010, Arya was bestowed as the winner of Spilzman Award through his performance titled “Treebute to Yogya”. The performance showed him riding a motorbike through the city of Yogyakarta wearing a specially designed helmet stuffed with soil and with a planted tree. It was meant as a homage to this green city and also a nod to the idea for direct carbon dioxide compensation. Arya’s latest exhibition “Garden of Delight” is now being held at Biasa+. The exhibition is clearly a manifestation of his awareness toward the environmental issues. However, it also highlights the fact that he is not about to identify himself as a mainstream environmentalist but someone who just enjoys a connection with nature on a personal level.
