I recently went to Rote for a week and had somewhat of an epiphany of sorts. Bali is great. People come here to get away from it all. The thing is, sure it’s a vacation destination, but people go on vacation to break from their daily routines and if that place happens to be beautiful and full of things to do (such as party), that’s even better. But sometimes you just need to break out of the Bali routine and decompress elsewhere. When you’re in a routine, you see the same things and over enough time, those things become invisible to you, so much so that you might not even realize glaring flaws right in front of you. Bad habits become part of daily ritual. That’s where leaving for a week or so comes in. Rote was pure, it was simple. There was absolutely nothing to think about or bother you other than the weather. Being in a completely different environment allows you to partially reset your lifestyle. You come back refreshed. Socializing becomes more enjoyable. You work more efficiently. And most importantly, you sleep better. Thankfully, Bali is only a stone throw away from a lot of beautifully isolated places and I highly recommend you explore the archipelago of possibilities out there. But for now, let’s party. Paul van Dyk is coming to town and if you’ve never heard of him, you’ve been in isolation much too long, and he is kicking of five nights of Hypnotised’s first anniversary in Kuta. The Magician is also going to be spinning at Woo Bar; he straddles that perfect line between the enjoyable and unusual, so naturally, we recommend that gig. Let’s not forget about Java Jazz coming over to Bali, we’ll definitely have some very cool shows from that. Especially the Mozaic Beachclub show on Thurs March 6 with Earth Wind and Fire. And the biggest return of the decade is coming to Pyramid with The Beat organizing a series of original and cover live music nights called Friday Night Live in The Beat room. That’s at Pyramid on Dewi Sri the next three Friday nights at least. It must be at least four years since we’ve done a regular music night. Come on down, it’s free entrance! Tristan Garner, AKA Tristan Garinet, was born in Nice, France in 1985. Tristan spent much of his time training on the classical piano while simultaneously programming software before becoming a DJ. Being in the forefront of the new French dance generation and following in the footsteps of Cerrone, Daft Punk and Cassius, the Paris-based DJ-slash-producer Tristan has been producing a string of numerous hits year after year since his breakthrough in late 2000s. Some of his widely-acclaimed tracks include “Give Love”, “Freedom”, and “Caribe”, which were all released in 2008 on Pool E Music imprint. The last one specifically earned big-time respect in Ibiza and was on Erick Morillo and David Guetta’s playlists. Following those, his international chops “Last Forever” with Norman Doray feat Errol Reid, “Fallin” with Polina, and his house track “Fuckin Down” in collaboration with DJ Gregori Klosman in 2013 also met similar and even bigger successes with the last one becoming the anthem at the Winter Music Conference 2010 in Miami. Under his own label Xtra Life Records (a subdivision of Strictly Rhythm), founded in 2010, he also dropped, so far, two EPs with the latest one in 2012 entitled “Digital Rocker”. Since March 2012, he and four other French DJs formed a group called Reepublic with their first single “Turn Off the Light”. A resident at Le Queen in Paris and at Vessel San Francisco, he also had released EPs as well as made his bootlegs, mashups, and remix duties for the likes of Armin van Buuren (“Feels So Good”, 2011), Tiësto (“Traffic”, 2012), Redroche (“Make Your Move”, 2011) on Hed Kandi Records, and Nadia Ali (“Rapture”, 2013).

Not long thereafter, their own debut EP entitled “Pharaoh” also saw the daylight in September 2013 on Gold Coast-based music imprint, Phethouse Records. Noah (previously known as Peterpan) can be traced back to 1997 when Ariel, Uki, Andika (former keyboardist) and Indra (former bassist) formed a school band called Topi. However, Topi broke up and only in 2000 did they regroup themselves under the name Peterpan, denoting their intention for the success and longevity of the band. On August 2, 2012, Peterpan officially changed their name to Noah and current formation comprises of Ariel (lead vocals/guitars), Uki (guitars), Lukman (guitars), David (keyboard) and Reza (drums).

As Peterpan, they rocked Indonesia with their hits released under Musica Studios, starting right from their very first album in 2003 entitled Taman Langit. The following year, they dropped their next album Bintang di Surga which went platinum 21 times with sales figures reaching 3,200,000 copies in total, earning it the Most Sold Album of the Year award in 2005. Despite being swamped with a lot of awards (they really had a lot in 2013) and gigs request, Peterpan stayed humble and kept their routine in the studio on par, finally their next album Menunggu Pagi made it to be the soundtrack for an Indonesian film Alexandria. Their other single “Menunggumu”, written by Ariel when he was in senior high, featured the late veteran Indonesian pop singer Chrisye, was also given heavy rotation. Prior to changing their name to Noah, Peterpan had also released three more albums – Hari Yang Cerah (2007), Sebuah Nama Sebuah Cerita (2008), and an instrumental one Suara Lainnya (2012). Now as Noah, after Ariel made it back to the band after a short hiatus, they have set yet another national record (with the previous one being performing in six Indonesian cities in 24 hours) when they launched their fresh album Seperti Seharusnya in five countries in 24 hours. To start anew, Noah also released a best-selling book entitled Kisah Lainnya and recounted their musical journey throughout their bygone years on the big screen with the film Awal Semula produced in 2013.

His background is still hazy covered in mystery, but his reputation as a DJ and producer is in no doubt. Stephen Fasano is the name, but people call him by his alias The Magician. He was previously a member of respected Belgian disco duo Aeroplane, but he got off the flight and began his solo ride in 2010. In line with Aeroplane’s tradition, he is now still creating free-to-download mixes via Soundcloud every month while busy travelling around the globe for his performance. According to his Facebook page, his musical influences come from renowned names such as Brian Ferry, Jacno, Fox the Fox, Human League, Supertramp, Fiction Factory, Fleetwood Mac, Dennis Wilson, Quincy Jones, Propaganda, Bobby O, Giorgio Moroder, Mr Master, Q. He has already improved through his works with others and now created his very own brand. Matthias Paul, better known by his stage name Paul van Dyk, grew up in East Berlin where he discovered his passion for music after secretly listening to popular but forbidden radio stations. He made his first DJ appearance in March 1991 during the opening of legendary German nightclub Tresor. He soon began to build his career, spinning regularly at various clubs in Berlin before finally releasing his first album 45 RPM in 1994. His second album Seven Ways took him to the Top 100 on the DJ Mag list, followed by the release of his hit single “For an Angel” which began to catapult him to stardom. The release of Out There & Back in 2000 made it clear that the Berlin-based DJ had more to offer and defined him as one of the most influential DJs and producers of all time.

can often be something of a gamble heading out for a spot of dinner on an evening around these parts. With so many new restaurants popping up here, there and everywhere, the old quality control can be a tad hit and miss at times.

How nice then to have a chance to revisit one of the original eat street institutions that is as reliable as a wood burning stove, only this time I’m up the hill in Ubud.Trattoria is surely the benchmark casual Italian dining choice in Bali, and without doubt everyone’s go-to spot when you’re all fusioned or organic’d out. So successful has the Trattoria concept been, that there are now multiple locations that have popped up all over the island and beyond, with branches in Jakarta, Medan, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and even Gili T. As with all Trattoria restaurants, the décor is simple, unpretentiously rustic and, well, Italian – a concept that is reflected nicely in the expansive yet familiar menu of hearty home made pastas, pizzas, insalate, primi and secondi piatta, antipasti and dolce. Open almost a year now, the Ubud location fronts onto leafy Jalan Sanggingan, with a breezy open-sided central area flanked by the garden terrace out front and a tucked away gazebo area out back. It’s evening time when I stop by to meet a vacationing friend after a day of meetings in town, and we’re greeted by a pleasantly buzzing atmosphere, punctuated by flickering candles illuminating an international mix of dining couples and families. The ever-friendly wait staff welcome us in and we grab a table in front of the bar that is adjacent to the open kitchen. Although I’m here for a review this is certainly not the first time I’ve sampled the delights of Trattoria, and quite frankly I could have written this one in my sleep. Nevertheless, we’re both ravenous and ready to get stuck into a few dishes of the hearty Italian fare. A couple of refreshing Margaritas (72k++) kick things off as we set about sharing a Timballo Di Salmon E Avocado (56k++) – or in English, a stack of sliced potatoes topped with diced avocado and wrapped around the sides with delicate slices of salmon, drizzled with a zingy vinaigrette dressing. For the mains, we follow the chef’s recommendation of the tangy Fusilli Rustici (66k++), and the perfectly cooked Portafoglio Di Manzo (140k++). The pasta is my favourite, but the tasty tenderloin stuffed with mozzarella and spinach comes in a very close second. For dessert we tuck into a helping of classic Italian Pannacotta (37k++). Sweet and creamy under the burnished sugar coating, it comes with a choice of strawberry or chocolate sauce. So it’s basically a swords and sandals film fused together with a disaster movie crudely mated with history... sounds interesting.

Technically, thirteen years have gone by since 2001’s solo One Nil, but that’s not to say the native Aucklander hasn’t kept himself busy on a clutch of projects with brother Tim (2004’s Everyone is Here), soundtracking Middle Earth for his buddy Peter Jackson (The Hobbit OST) and his ambitiously international 7 Worlds Collide collective, which drew together such esteemed and diverse musicians as Jeff Tweedy, Eddie Vedder and Johnny Marr. Dizzy Heights finds Finn the younger back on his own, and unfortunately at times it feels as if the songwriter’s touch has deserted him. The woozy guitar and dreamy vocals of “Impressions” and sunshiny pop of the title track open proceedings promisingly enough, but all too quickly we stumble into a few too many misfires that take the sheen off what is otherwise a solid effort. “Flying in the Face of Love” is forgivable as 80’s pop, but “Your Next Move” is a meandering Bowie rip off, and the early potential of “Recluse” is obliterated by a series of utterly stupid lyrics: “People stay at home/ watching Game of Thrones” and “I think Howard Hughes would love to be on the Internet”, before ending with a riff that sounds like fingers on a blackboard. The lowest point comes in the form of “Divebomber”, which throws theatrical falsetto over the top of baroque strings, military drums and the sound of planes falling out the sky. Full marks for trying something different, but for someone who’s made his name on reliable melodies and seemingly effortless song writing, it all just feels out of place. Luckily, the rest of Dizzy Heights is just good enough to negate these hiccups, and the overall impression is one of more good than bad. “Better Than TV” is a groovy mantra with a Middle Eastern rhythm, and “Pony Ride” recalls the indie rock of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. At these moments, the richly textured songwriting bubbles to the surface again, reminding us that Finn still has much to offer some 40 years since he started penning music. For a writer at this stage of his career, he displays a confident, almost fearless attitude, and for that he should be commended. Dan Ashcroft

Geoff Todd G

eoff Todd is an Australian painter known for his bold and expressive art which is inspired by his concern towards humanity. Through his works, he explores the harmony of the human experience that links people across culture and confronts sensitive issues of national identity, indigenous rights, sexuality, terrorism and war. Todd had his first solo exhibition at the age of 18 in 1969 and continued to establish himself as a serious young artist with the acknowledgements by numerous public galleries throughout Australia. In 1980, he became the first Melbourne artist appointed as the residence at the Victorian College of the Arts. He travelled across Australia to Arnhemland in 1984 where he worked with traditional Aboriginal artists for two and a half years. This experience triggered his work into a new direction and also stimulated him to travel abroad. He travelled to Indonesia where he found an

ideal environment for himself as an artist; a society committed to life, religion, festivals and art. In 1999, he held an exhibition at Vredeberg Fort in Yogyakarta which resulted in articles appearing widely throughout the Indonesian and Australian media. Todd sees Indonesia as his first steppingstone to further his career and to continue his overseas travels. His work has been included in contemporary art exhibitions in many countries including the United States, Austria, Hong Kong and Italy. His work is also held by well-known identities and celebrities including Hollywood actor William Shatner of Star Trek fame. Todd is currently exhibiting his works at Positive Negative Gallery. The exhibition titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friendshipâ&#x20AC;? showcases his works that reflect on the commonality and union of Indonesia and Australia. Look Ula Spa makes use of light refreshing colors with white and blue dominating the interior of the spa. Everything has a somewhat cool crisp feel to it and an overwhelming sense of modernity and cleanliness that just borders on the clinical can be felt when entering. Curved lines and matted concrete walls greet you in the therapy rooms that are brightly lit with halogen lights. Balinese music adds to the overall ambiance. Feel We tried the Signature Massage which will be on their menu for around 400k and was a very relaxing as well as beautifying experience. The massage starts with a foot cleansing before stepping into the massage bed face down for a gentle massage. The therapist starts at your legs and works her way up before turning you over and continuing the same procedure. Once the massage phase is over, the masseuse then continues the session by adding body scrub all over your body before scraping it all off and applying a body mask before applying lotion. You are then welcome to take a shower. Ingredients Ula utilizes many natural ingredients and uses Gaya Warna spa products in its treatments. The foot scrub consisted of rosemary soap and rock salts to scrape off the excess skin cells. The massage oil had ginger and lemongrass elements and both the body scrub and body mask had strong lime and ginger aromas. The application of jasmine lotion ended the experience. Magic Ula Spa was a comfortable experience that had a certain sanitary newness to it that conveyed a strong feeling of cleanliness which certainly added to our satisfaction level. The therapist were polite and clear with her instructions and very subtly informed us of each step of the process. Overall, a great little spa in the heart of Kuta.
