in this tropical environment, we embrace whatever weather comes our way. We ride on motorbikes. A lot of our houses are missing an entire wall. For the most part, our living rooms are open to the elements. A lot of places, especially temperate ones, actively shield their daily lives against what Mother Nature brings. But we’re different here and if the weather does affect a person’s mood, well it must be more so here than anywhere else. And that’s what makes the past few weeks so great, it gives us an overwhelming sense of the seasons changing and that the worst of the rainy season is over. Now, I’m not guaranteeing good weather from now on, with the weird oscillations we’ve had in the past few years, I don’t think anyone can. But one thing is certain, the dry season is coming, but as they say around here, normally not till after Nyepi. With good weather, one can make all sorts of plans without fear of being held hostage by water falling from the sky and to help you with those plans is this handy publication… We have the lovely Brooke Evers heading over to Sky Dome and for something completely different, Xavier Rudd is headlining at Bali Spirit along with a load of world musicians and local ones as well. At 13, she won her first award at the Tamblyn Young Model Discovery competition and three years later she was awarded with the Performing Arts Excellence Award for Dance, Drama and Music. She received her bachelor’s degree from Griffith University with a degree in journalism with public relations and digital media in 2010. Ignatius Rosoinaya Penyami, better known as Igor Saykoji is an Indonesian rapper and performer. He wasn’t into music until he listened to a song titled “Cewek Matre” on Indonesian hip-hop compilation album Pesta Rap (1996). He has listened to hip-hop ever since, primarily Indonesian groups such as Black Skin, Boyz Got No Brain, G-Tribe and Sindikat 31, as well as solo rappers such as Ucoq and Blake. Igor then chose Saykoji (Psycho G) as his stage name, deriving from his personal experience during school where he was quite an introvert and called a ‘psycho’ by his peers. During live performances, Saykoji normally performs with his partners Guntur Simbolon and Della MC of Batik Tribe.

In 2006, Saykoji released his first album Saykoji with the track “So What Gitu Loh” successfully hitting the charts and propelling his name in Indonesian music scene. After the success of his first album, he released the second album Musik Hati with its popular track “Jomblo”. His single “Online” (2009) was used for a TV spot for phone service provider IM3. His other notable songs include “Party Like a Star”, “Apa Ku Bilang”, “Move On”, “Kembalikan Merah Putih” and “Rock the Beat”. Besides rapping and making music, Saykoji has also acted for some Indonesian movies such as Selendang Rocker (2009), Langit Biru (2011), 5 CM (2012) and Tak Sempurna (2013).

Hailing from France, Oliver Raymond got into disco and funk in his early teen years. At the age of 15, he started mixing music. His friendship with Stephane Deschezeaux during college years led to his musical journey with a debut on a local radio station. In 1991, they bought their equipment and started to compose music. That same year, Oliver became resident DJ at a club in Grenoble, France and started his career in electronic music. Oliver and Sthepane’s experiments became official in 1994 when the live act of Oxia was born. In 1995, Oliver created Ozone Records where Oxia released their first EP, Ozone 001. In 1999, the duo then decided to part paths but still remained as friends due to Stephane’s interest in deep house. Oliver then continued with Oxia as a solo DJ act. He released his debut solo album 24 Heures on Goodlife in 2004, floating between groovy melodic techno and deeper electro touch.

Oxia’s debut album 24 Heures entered the Top 5 Albums chosen by readers of French magazine Trax in 2004. In 2008, he was voted second and third place at Beatport Music Awards for Best Remix and Best Techno Artist respectively. He released Sun Step EP on 8Bit Record in 2009 which immediately reached top spots on the charts including Beatport and Resident Advisor. In 2010, he delivered “Less Time” on Infiné Music as well as making another EP with Eric Borgo titled Plastic Bed for 8Bit. On 2011, he mixed a birthday compilation for 8Bit’s fifth anniversary which contained his previous unreleased track “Meaningful”.

Robin Blixt is a DJ, producer and remixer hailing from south Sweden. Born from a disco mother and a metal father, his formative years were pretty much influenced by the saxophone and drums at his disposal. Moving on to electronic music was not really a piece of cake for him, he just couldn’t get his hands on turntables as easily as the other teenagers could. So he turned to software-oriented solutions instead. Robin eventually managed to borrow a full set-up with mixer and turntables after circulating bootlegs and mash ups that he made.

After playing regularly at several known venues, Robin’s name and sound started to get acknowledged amongst people in the scene. He eventually made his dream of venturing into Asia, more specifically China came true in his early 20s. Since then, the Swedish DJ has been spinning at various clubs in China’s bigger cities, especially Shanghai, where he set the standard for world famous Bund’s nightclub as the music director and resident DJ at the renowned Bar Rouge. His universally appealing tracks also landed him the opportunity to play gigs in selected world-class clubs in cities like Tokyo, Cannes, Tel Aviv, Seoul, Singapore, and Dubai. His tracks also have been heard at festivals and radio programs, having headlined a few big events such as Ministry of Sound’s 4 Seasons series and broadcasting his radio show on Udance, China’s leading radio station for electronic music. Robin, who has played alongside the likes of Louie Vega, Bob Sinclar, A-Trax, Sandy Rivera and Felix da Housecat, has also lent his skill of designing music for clients like Hugo Boss, Cartier, Moët & Chandon and Elite Models.

Like many DJs of his era, British DJ Matty Wainwright first tried belt-driven turntables which he bought in the mid 1990s. He was teaching himself to be cool then, something that he more than happily imparts these days to his fellow turntable enthusiasts/trainees during The DJ Dispensary’s DJ Retreat. During his university days, he would make good use of his spare time with a fair amount of DJ work, then, in 1998 he finally took over the DJ circuit on a weekly basis with four other DJs under the Philosophie moniker as well as working as an artist relations manager at Warner Music UK.

More on the Philosophie moniker, in which Matty is the youngest among the five, this DJ collective actually caters more towards a more discerning audience with only selected beats and cool cuts getting served, no mainstream allowed. The group did their job very well in raising the energy across dance floors and festivals around the UK, Ibiza, France and other places across Europe. Matty’s career and portfolio even got more impressive after he embarked upon his eastward venture to Asia. So far, he has counted Taj in Mumbai, Subsix – the world’s first underwater club in Maldives, Ku De Ta Bali, and Skylite in Abu Dhabi as his DJ residencies. He also spent three years in Singapore working with Lenovo and MTV as DJ mentor for the Asia wide MTV Co:Lab TV series. Currently, he is busy sharing his passion for music and travel through his project called The DJ Dispensary, a collaboration led by him with his team of DJ tutors who transform any music enthusiast into fully-functioning DJs with their own developed sound in just a few days in some of the world’s hottest resorts. Just last year they had it in Bali, Maldives and Oman with their latest retreat being in January this year across three cities in India at Vivanta by Taj “Sound Lab”.

eep Sea Explorers have been whipping up a veritable rock n’ roll storm all over the island in recent times. They only started playing live around the beginning of 2013 but have already built a large following for their style of effusive garage rock. 25-year-old lead singer Arja bars no holds on stage and on the street, and since the band will be headlining the next two Beat Room outings, The Beat’s David Trauts thought it must be time for another quick chat to find out where they are at. What has the band been up to since the beginning of this year? Well, our focus has been to finish our long awaited EP, but since we have been doing everything independently, we also have had to prepare our own band merchandise, as well as playing around new venues to get more and more fans from different places around the island. We are currently tight with recordings, since this month is our deadline to finish our EP and we’ve also been playing Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu and now trying to play in Ubud a little bit more. Is the fan base now getting bigger? Yes, the number of fans has grown throughout the year, more and more people have been listening and giving us great feedback. According to the story we ran in the beat last year you have only been together since the end of 2012. Is that correct?

Yes, we’re a young band compared to the many giants that have been running the show around this island for so long, but they’ve all given us their support which is really good. Just last month we were lined up with Superman is Dead, Navicula, The Hydrants, Brianna Simorangkir, Broken Rose and Garden Grove for this Sinabung Victim Charity event at Hard Rock Cafe. They’re all big names there except for us, so it’s fun being the upcoming underdogs. What kind of music do you play? We play rock & roll, blues, garage rock, psychedelic as well as other things that are unspecified. Who do you think you sound like most? Well a lot of people have said that we remind them of The Doors, and we do love The Doors too, but there are a lot more influences in our music too. What other influences? Bands from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s up to now, it’s all a part of the evolution of the genre itself. What do you think of the live music scene in Bali? It’s really good. Bali as an international island gets people from all around the world together, so it’s good to be getting good feedback from them. And when they see something they like, hopefully they’ll bring it home with them and share it with their friends. Bali also has a strong local rock & roll community and a great array of local music events, and more and more people are getting into

it. So it’s not only good for us but it’s good for the whole creative freedom and expression thing. What’s your favorite venue to play in town? I guess I like them all. Single Fin, Deus, Straw Hut. Do you ever go clubbing? Yes, I do, I’m also a fan of electronic music. What reason do you think electronic music has taken over so much in the last decade? I think it’s just the possibility of creating more sound and expression through music. With the technology today, it has become easier to produce electronic music, whether it is bad or good, it’s just that there is more access and less hassle with it. But there are also more people going to clubs than live music right? Yes, but most festivals now line up both DJs and bands in the same event. Do you think there is some way that live music can grab people’s attention again like electronic music has done in recent years? Sure there is. For example, I look at most venues now that have original live music and they appear to be very basic. Cut back to looking like someone’s living room. Is that what the punters want, you as a band want, or just the circumstances?

Maybe ‘cause it’s just more difficult and expensive for them to set up a proper stage and get a good sound technicians and engineers rather than just to install a DJ booth, but as a musicians of course we want better spaces and sound systems so we can play better too. I think we have that at The Beat Room. So what’s the new EP about? The new EP is a themed mini album, which is something that people haven’t really been doing in a long time. The theme of the album is about the sounds of Atlantis, mixing a little bit of desert gypsy, island vibes with some rock & roll music, and we try to make all the songs worth being heard both musically and lyrically. We’ve also been preparing for our full album that’s supposed to come out after this one called Amphibians. How do you make the songs more worth being heard both musically and lyrically? Quality over quantity, we try to focus to enrich these few songs specifically. It’s like comparing a Marvin Gaye record to modern pop music. hile canapes and drinks were being passed around Townhouse last Friday night, a new documentary film based on the excessive plastic now found in our oceans was previewed to local people concerned with the terrible state of the seas and beaches around the planet and especially right here in our own backyard. There were presentations and money raised for local environmental groups Tas Pasar, Bye Bye Plastic Bags, Keep Bali Clean, and for the organisers of the show and the video, the Plastic Oceans Foundation. One of the kind folks putting the show together, Brit, told TB, “We are trying to raise awareness about what plastic is doing to our oceans and that’s what the film is all about too. The money was raised to help the editing and distribution of the documentary which has not been released yet. Hi Xavier, tell us about your life. Start when you are in the womb and end it in 2050, 10 years after man has made faster than light travel happen thanks to friendly aliens. A simple soul from the South Coast of Victoria, born many moons ago and doing what I can to keep this planet intact. We should ignore the need to travel at the speed of light and concentrate more on how we can preserve the mother as one mob. 2050 should be our deadline to end all confrontational bulls--t and have complete reconciliation as a race and with the earth and all it’s inhabitants. I hope I’m still here to see it.

oppies is one of those rare few restaurants on this island that has totally withstood the test of time. First opened in 1973, the restaurant along with Made’s Warung, were perhaps the first beginnings of the culinary scene in Bali. Legend has it that the name of the restaurant derived from the poppy plants that used to grow in the area. Today Bali is a very different place, but Poppies remains resiliently the same as it has been for decades. As the old adage goes, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” and that seems to be the running formula for Poppies. As the surrounding area mutates and evolves into something different, some might even say “less” Bali, Poppies remains a steadfast bastion, a monument, to a far simpler time when tradition reigned, colonialism was freshly gone, and the age of tourism on the island was at its infancy. The interior harks back to what was considered architecturally fashionable in those early days which, strangely enough, look considerably more aesthetically pleasing than pretty much everything in a 100-meter radius of the venue. Coral rocks dominate the interior walls and a generous use of foliage surrounds you no matter where you are sitting. Colonial-era fittings and miniature chandeliers hang from the top of the bar which serves as a centerpiece of the restaurant. The

Surely one of the most prolific of American songwriters, Beck Hansen fits between genres as easily as some people change their socks. Darling to critics and die-hard fans alike, consistency have always eluded the cool cat from Cali, but that’s hardly surprising when you consider the ‘pick’n’mix’ approach he usually employs. Over a decade ago, the contemplative Sea Change (2002) came closest to a fully coherent LP that stuck largely to a kind of stripped down, west coast folk, and it’s back in this realm that we find the hazy downtempo beats of Morning Phase. Whether it’s the Nick Drake-esque pianos on “Heart is a Drum” or twangy acoustic guitars and muted banjos weaving through “Say Goodbye” and “Country Down”, it seems Mr. Hansen has once again dug out his folkster’s hat, and it’s good to see that it still fits beautifully.Exactly why he’s decided to revisit this territory some twelve years on is anyone’s guess, but having suffered a pretty severe spinal injury last year means he’s probably not been in any mood to start throwing robot shapes à la “Where It’s At” just yet. If recent reports in the music press are to be believed, Beck has taken to calling this album his “California record”, and it’s easy to see why. Much of Morning Phase’s ambience and texture harks back to the early 1970s Los Angeles of CSN&Y – incidentally, the cover portrait of a floppy hatted and, I suspect, poncho’d Beck bears more than a passing resemblance to a young Neil Young. There is a temptation to say that this is all just too similar to Sea Change - “This morning I lost all my defences/won’t you show me the way” he drawls on opener “Morning”, which really does sound an awful lot like SC preamble “The Golden Age”, but actually, who cares? I mean really, so what if this is SC pt.2? Not many artists out there are in a position to do this sort of thing and get away with it, so don’t get bogged down in its similarities – just enjoy this second helping of mellow gold. Dan Ashcroft

Ditching the Galaxy nomenclature, these two new watches look to revamp Samsung’s smartwatch lineup with lighter, more wearable designs. Both models feature 1.63″ Super AMOLED displays, are powered by 1.0 GHz dual-core processors, and can handle calls and incoming notifications, control media, and display information like the weather in addition to the time. On the verge of a probable buyout from Microsoft, Nokia remains competitive in the smartphone arena with the release of the X Android series. Although the Finnish manufacturer has likely promised its operating systems to Windows, the brand’s latest experiments with the exceedingly popular Android platform for this series of affordable phones. Akin to the Lumia 520, yet with a 4″ screen, 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM, the Nokia X Android (and the upgraded X+ version) will each feature a 3-megapixel fixed focus camera at the back. The highlight of these releases isn’t necessarily their relatively basic features, but the ease and simplicity with which they’re to be used – all thanks to a Nokia-designed (though Windowsinspired) user interface. Apple Unveils CarPlay In many senses, Apple‘s Car Play is the one of the most logical releases in several years. People around the world have iPhones and also drive, and too many have been frustrated by a lack of connectivity between the two. Car Play will be available on select cars beginning this year, allowing iPhones to take over a car’s internal display. The phone app adapts to knobs, buttons, and touchscreens to extend calling, GPS functions, messaging, and music functions to your car’s entertainment hub. Messages can be recited and listened to through Siri, while other apps have been re-imagined to encourage focus on the road. Impressive too is the list of participating companies, which this year includes Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, and others – with even more brands in the works. Agus Putu Suyadnya Suyadnya takes inspiration from his surroundings; the environment with its beauty and complexity. Not only worldly inspiration, but also spiritually. The Balinese traditional philosophy of Tri Hita Karana also influences him. The harmony among people, harmony with God and harmony with nature are boldly expressed on his art. Suyadnya has exhibited his works in Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali. He also has shared his art in South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. In 2006, he attained a special award at the Jakarta Art Awards for his work â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kisi-Kisi Jakartaâ&#x20AC;?. He is currently exhibiting at Lestari Art Space, presenting his works that explores the harmony between human and nature.
