Nyepi is really soon and if you haven’t got anything planned, now is an excellent time to do so. The whole island shuts down for 24 hours. No television. No flights. No lights. No using roads. Absolutely nothing. What you’re supposed to do is contemplate and reflect on yourself in silence and for some, it’s an absolute blessing, for others, well, they try to avoid it at all costs. People rent villas, stay at hotels, or leave the island altogether as if having a day to do absolutely nothing is something you must escape from. Beyond Nyepi is a whole different story. If you’ve been isolated by Nyepi, well, perhaps you might want to socialize and join the crowds at the various venues in this magazine. Because we peddle the exact opposite of what Nyepi has to offer. We show you how to join a crowd of people in a room with lots and lots of noise in social bliss. If you want something to lubricate that atmosphere, even better. So we have quite a few things going on… Mike Candys is coming to Sky Garden, he looks just about as house as it gets with his giant smiley face mask. It almost reminds us of those straight up stereotypical club kids of the mid 90s. He should be a bucket of fun. No more Rhonda and Ketut The Australian insurance company who launched the Rhonda and Ketut campaign, creating two characters that both Australian and the Balinese have embraced, have announced the end of the road for the two. AAMI executive manager, Richard Ruboni, told media not to expect any further updates to the advertising campaign, as the two actors have moved on. The actors were Mandy McElhinney and Balinese forklift driver Kadek Mahardika. AAMI first introduced Rhonda in 2011 with Ketut introduced later when she went on holiday to Bali. Formed in 2008, Doomwork is an Italian DJ duo made of two gentlemen named Alessandro Lacavalla and Claudio Maura, who both hail from Rome. Their musical turning point occurred around the turn of the millennium when both of them widened their search for groovier tunes purveyed by Detroit techno and Chicago house maestros. Among Doomwork’s influences, are names like Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, and The Prodigy who inspired the duo to become bona fide producers.

Only a year after their creation, Doomwork made the top of the Beatport charts thanks to their track “Jazzy Stuff” with Neuroxyde. In 2010, other than releasing a few more tracks and EPs like “Hi Sinatra” and “Macacos”, Doomwork also found new partners in crime in proliferating their signature sounds such as 2000 and One AKA Dylan Hermelijn who dropped their co-produced tracks on his own 100% Pure and Area Remote labels as well as Satoshi Tomiie and Hector Romero who did likewise on their SAW Recordings imprint. An album by Doomwork was realized in 2012, Club Abduction under the Street King label. The duo also appeared on Sven Väth’s Cocoon Compilation L in the same year. Last year, Doomwork, who has performed in venues like Barcelona’s Elrow 14, Florence’s Tenax and Tokyo’s Air Club, has also chipped in their sounds on Audiofly’s Supernature imprint and Nick Warren’s latest Renaissance compilation. This year alone, they have appeared on Anthology Vol. 4 - Part One, New Breed of Deep House Vol. 3, and Starlight Unlimited Goes to Miami 2014.

The man behind that yellow smile mask is Michael Kull, or AKA Mike Candys. Hailing from Switzerland, Mike has become one of the biggest house DJs and producers in Europe. He first started his musical career producing and remixing for other DJs and took a leap from behind the scenes in the late 2000s and joined forces with Jack Holiday. The collaboration released “La Serenissima” in 2008 which also catapulted Mike’s name in the Swiss music scene. His single “Together Again” made him internationally recognized. Mike was previously signed to numerous labels such as Sirup Music, Kontor, Doityourself and the USA’s Ultra Records; and currently heads his own label, Wombat Music.

Luke Fair’s first ever massive 12-inch single entitled “Kritical/Let U Know” released in 2012 on Black Recordings. This debut track of his, kind of set the tone for what people can expect to come out of his live sets. It was famously featured on Satoshi Tomiie’s Nubreed compilation series. His specialties include warming up the dance floors, like the one he did very well for Sasha on his North American “Involver” tour. Luke Fair also hits Australia with his Balance 011 and Balance Selections 002 series in 2007 and in 2013 respectively. Besides that, he also claims credit for two other major compilations such as In House We Trust 3 alongside Desyn Masiello on Yoshitoshi Recordings and OS_0.3 on Bedrock Records. Particularly loved by underground communities, Luke Fair has also featured in a number of festivals in his own right, such as Creamfields, Global Gathering and Miami’s Winter Music Conference. He also used to do music podcasts alongside Hungary’s Add2Basket entitled “The Rogue Show”, but stopped after 20 episodes leaving some 70k subscribers crying for more. He now has his own label and radio podcast called “Nonlocal”. Fair’s journey this year is marked with his latest remix of Scottish producer, Bageera’s “Life Without Shapes”.

Born in 1970 in Jakarta, DJ Romy Soekarno or simply DJ Romy, is the grandson of the Indonesia’s first president. Since he was 13 years old, he had a flair for music. At 17, he was already in a new wave band and later in a jazz band, laying the first few essential bricks of his career in music. His transition to dance music came in 1989. He was in London where he was pursuing a three year university course, which also shaped his perspective on electronic music after being part of the acid house movement. Staying in the British capital he attended numerous shows by DJs like Danny Tenaglia, Frankie Knuckles, Sasha and Paul Oakenfold.

Following his return to Indonesia in 1992, DJ Romy began throwing Jakarta’s first ever house music parties and pioneering the underground house as well as techno parties in Indonesia. Soon thereafter, he also took up his debut residency at the legendary club called The B1 – the first underground club in the capital. Famous for his many raves organized since the early 1990s until the turn of the millenium, DJ Romy founded 1945MF in 1997 which now houses prominent DJs and artists in Indonesia as well as has chapters overseas. In 2002, he also set up Spinach Records with his partner, DJ Riri Mestica. His passion for house and techno is also reflected in his tracks entitled “Sound of Jakarta” which was listed as the best vinyl track of Ibiza 2006 and “When I See the Sun At Jimbaran” which got a remix by Funkagenda. Besides releasing his own albums in the national dance scene, DJ Romy also collaborated in live P.A.s with renowned national mainstream musicians. For his contribution and effort in taking the electronic dance movement up another few levels, DJ Romy has won The Best DJ, The Best Producer, The Best Live P.A. and The Best Track of the Year at REDMA Awards 2007. A year later, he also received the Paranoia Milestone Award. His latest chop was in 2013, when he co-remixed a track on Global Tech House Sessions Vol. 8 entitled “It’s Gonna Get Better”

Joey Ghazlan or Joey G is Malaysian based DJ, TV host and emcee. He learnt how to DJ as a teenager when he was in London. Joey went to Malaysia in 1997 for a holiday but then decided to settle in the country, particularly in Kuala Lumpur. He immediately set up his name in Malaysian scene as a notable DJ, playing at numerous clubs before starting his residency at The Clubhouse. As his reputation was growing, he then moved to Twelve SI as senior resident DJ.

Riri Mestica is one of the top DJs in the Indonesian dance scene. He moved to Europe at the age of 17 where he later started to discover dance music in a small bar in Switzerland. After a few years shaping his techniques, he came back to Jakarta in 2000 to explore the Indonesian scene. He joined 1945 Music Factory and needed only three months start working at a brand new club at the time called Retro. Riri DJed alongside the likes of Sasha, Nick Warren, Fedde Le Grand, Slacker, Stephan K, James Lavelle, Ashley Caselle, Harry Lemon and Kasey Taylor. He has also been the opener for renowned international DJs coming to Indonesia including Cressida, Marco V, Ferry Corsten, Dash Berlin, Kaskade, Tocadisco, Felix de Housecat, ATB and Rank 1.

Jerinx, drummer and outspoken frontman of local rock band Superman is Dead, who have something like three million fans on Facebook, has always been the unofficial spokesperson for the youth of Bali. He now has Bali’s future set well in his sights and speaks to The Beat about Tolak Reklamasi or Reject Reclamation and some of the problems Bali is facing in the immediate future.

What is this Tolak Reklamasi thing you’ve Bali”. Yep. It’s always about the money. What been supporting? about the ecological effects like the hundreds OK. I’ll make it as simple and fun as possible because I know The Beat readers are mostly here for good times, not for a radicalintellectual-revolution. Haha. Here’s the facts. Big time Jakarta investors and their best friend the Bali governor have this brilliant idea to make a new 883 hectare island in Benoa Bay (Tanjung Benoa), South Bali. This new island is planned to have an F1 circuit, a Disneylandtype park, a golf-course, hotels etc. They, as always, are using ancient propaganda like “mega-projects will attract more tourist and more tourist equals more jobs and money for

of meters of erosion in Gianyar beaches similar to the 1993 224-hectare reclamation of Serangan Island? What about the future of Benoa’s fishermen who have been fishing there for generations? What about the fact that South Bali (Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Kuta, Canggu etc) is already over-populated? What about, for once, local people don’t have to be the slaves on their own island in the name of tourism? Nope, they never thought of that. It’s always the short-term goal; the investors get their profits, and by the time this island is destroyed, they’ll already find a new paradise to exploit.

FEATURE It’s a pretty easy logic; those mega-investors, they don’t live in Bali. It ain’t their home. Bali is just numbers to them. Why should they care about the long-term effects of their business in Bali? Oh. By the way, the Bali governor has been caught out a number of times about this mega-project. First he said he wouldn’t sign any approvals before a feasibility-study is done, but he did, and it’s proven. Second, he said if the results of the study (which was done by a team of scientists from Udayana University) says it’s a no-go, he’ll cancel the mega-project. But nope, he didn’t, and it’s proven. Based on those facts, I volunteered myself into a non-political collective of Bali activists, artists, journalists, and students called Forbali (Forum Rakyat Bali Tolak Reklamasi www.forbali.org) and since mid 2013 we’ve been doing everything we can to get this reclamation project cancelled.

How does it affect the average Beat reader?

It’s simple. If you are in Bali for short-term and don’t want to waste your energy caring about Bali’s future, then it won’t effect you at all. But I’m talking about the long term. You are here to enjoy the beauty and nature of the island and the hospitality of the people, right? Now, when one-day (I believe it’s going to be sooner than you think) the beauty will be gone and the hospitality turns into anger and frustration, what else can you enjoy? A million dollar private resort? A 100K-bottle-of-beer party with ‘famous’ overseas DJs? A tourism industry made up of plastic-surgery? Is that really the reason you came to Bali?

What do you think it will take to realize your objective?

We’ve already shown so much evidence that the tourism-industry in Bali is out of control. Some areas are over populated and superrich, some areas don’t even have schools and hospitals. Bali nowadays is like a vulgar display of how capitalism can destroy an innocent and beautiful island. It’s like a virus, when SouthBali is ‘done’, it will move to another part of Bali. We have social and cultural problems, traffic problems, water, electricity and waste

Why have you thrown your weight behind it?

Me and my band (SID) are so blessed that we have millions of loyal fans and followers. Instead of using fame as a tool to pursue something superficial, we would like to use it to educate our fans, make them stronger and smarter. What happens in Bali (corrupt government, greedy investors) is also happening all across Indonesia. So it’s a relevant national youthmovement. I mean, of course you don’t see international musicians/DJs do what we do and that’s simply because they don’t live in a thirdworld country. If you live in a county where justice is preserved, human-rights and equality is protected, what’s there left to fight?

You’re all about punk, how does that vibe with activism?

To me, punk is all about anti-establishment. Now, the definition of ‘establishment’ does vary. Some punks rebel against nothing, some rebel against nothing but it’s a fashion-statement. It can get to a superficial level like ‘I’m cooler than you coz I’ve got more tattoos and take more drugs’. But to me personally, ‘establishment’ is a ‘comfort-zone’. And it does vibe with activism because activism is all about letting people know the truth, in order to seek justice and make positive changes, no matter how ugly the truth is. In this context, Bali’s comfort-zone is “More tourists equals more money”, “without tourism Bali will not survive” and all that government propaganda. The Balinese are not designed to be the leaders of Bali’s tourism, but designed to be the slaves of tourism. We are not provided with enough education but yet we have to compete with the first-world’s well-educated workers. We are designed to agree on anything our corrupt and dishonest government decides to do when it comes to tourism. It’s quite ironic, Bali is known

as the island of a thousand temples and gods, but to be honest, there’s only one god here; Money.

Has this whole ordeal made you more or less of a believer of the current system?

I’ve never been a fan of the system because I never believed in politics. Politicians and greedy investors are the ones responsible for destroying Bali. Period.

What else have you been up to lately?

My clothing line www.xrmblx.co just released two series of sun glasses and two series of made in Bali organic hair-pomade. Some of the profits will go to our Eco Defender program, which is to support any movement to stop the Benoa Bay reclamation project. SID just did a new video Sunset Di Tanah Anarki which will be launched at the end of March. It’s a beautiful and sad political video, so don’t watch if you don’t care about justice.

How does one get involved in the Tolak Reformasi campaign?

Easy. Go to www.forbali.org and spread the message to as many people as possible. There’s some English information provided. We’ve been using and taking the grace out of Bali. Now it’s time to start giving back.

ollfast came on stage at The Beat Room a couple of Friday nights ago and swayed their way nonchalantly into some classic hard hitting, but strangely laid back, rock music that knocked most folks in the crowd out of the ball park. Their infectious sound and laconic antics had the crowd reeling for more, so much so that we needed to find out who the heck these dudes were as soon as possible. David Trauts sat down with Agha Praditya from Rollfast to find out what makes this young and exciting band tick. TB: Tell us something about yourself

Agha: We are Rollfast. We’re a rock/psychedelic band from Denpasar, Bali, formed in mid 2011 and the band consists of me, Agha (vocals) Bayu (guitar) Gung Wah (guitar) Arya (bass) and Maurits (drums).

TB: And who are you?

Agha: I’m Agha, I’m from Denpasar and I’m 18 years old.

TB: Studying what? Agha: Architecture...

TB: What’s the band’s main influences?

Agha: Hmm I don’t know, it’s just a mix of everything that came out of our heads but it would be a lie if I didn’t mention Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and a little bit of Led Zepellin I guess..

TB: When you are on stage it seems like the band has a kind of drunken sway Agha: I just finished high school about a year going on - what’s that about? Is that the ago, and I’m currently going to college. band’s normal style? TB: Do you still go to school?

Agha: Like everything it just flows hahaha… Yeah we enjoyed the atmosphere there at

Agha: Actually the normal style would be something like that but last night was like *boom* And thanks.. Good to hear that you liked it!

TB: What are your songs about in general?

Agha: Hmm, something from the life of the marginalized I guess.

TB: Who is writing all the music for the band? Music and lyrics?

Agha: For the music we usually just jam in the studio so there’s no real writing, just pure jamming. And for the lyrics, I write them.

TB: How did you first start singing?

Agha: Back when I was in 5th grade elementary school. It was because of the game “guitar hero” hahaha. At first I didn’t have any interest in singing, I wanted to start a band and play guitar, but there wasn’t anyone else in our school that could sing so I had to learn to sing for the band.

TB: So has singing come to you naturally or has it been hard work? Agha: It took a while to get the feel at the beginning, but after knowing a few tricks it worked out quiet well.

TB: What do you do in your spare time?

Agha: I just study and go to classes and on the weekend I’ll go hang out with my friends or sometimes go to the woods. Living within a croissant’s throw of Café Moka I’m well acquainted with their excellent menu, and so decided to drop by for lunch one afternoon last week with a good mate who has just moved to Bali and needed pointing in the right direction.To kick things off we ordered up a plate of the quesadillas (42k+) from the tapas section to share, along with a couple of orange and mint blended juices (25k+) to cool off. The tortilla-style quesadillas were quickly scoffed, the juices proved to be perfectly refreshing, and we quickly moved on to ordering up a couple of the mains. First up, I went for the creamy carbonara (69k+), which comes with generous helpings of bacon and mushrooms, and an egg yolk on top, while my friend opted for a good ol’ fashioned cheeseburger (62k+) – both of which proved that there’s more to Café Moka than just coffee and cake. The Missing Picture Documentary. Director: Rithy Panh. Writer: Rithy Panh, Christophe Bataille (commentary). Cast: Randal Douc (narrator for original French version), Jean-Baptiste Phou (narrator for English version). In 1975 life was a nightmare for Rithy Panh, the director of this film. His family and relatives were expelled from the Cambodian capital by the Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot. So, here, Panh recreates a missing image of the atrocities made by the despotic regime in the late 1970s by using clay figures, archival footage and his insightful narration to make one of the most tantalizing documentaries ever made out of Cambodia. It won the “Un Certain Regard” prize at Cannes last year and was a nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards. That surely speaks volume of this film’s quality.

OMAR Drama, Thriller. Director: Hany Abu-Assad. Writer: Hany Abu-Assad. Cast: Adam Bakri, Samer Bisharat, Waleed Zuaiter, Leem Lubany. From the director of Golden Globe-winning Paradise Now, this movie revolves around the theme of love, friendship and betrayal, a theme we are so used to. After getting arrested for the death of an Israeli soldier, a young Palestinian freedom fighter called Omar is given a tough choice of being a spy for the Israeli authority or death. This is Hany Abu-Assad’s latest movie which delves into the reality faced by those on the front lines of the conflict has clinched the Jury Prize in the “Un Certain Regard” section of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and was a nominee at this year’s Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Jiseul Drama, History, War. Director: O Muel. Writer: O Muel. Cast: Lee Kyeong-joon, Hong Sang-pyo, Moon Seok-beom, Yang Jeong-won. This movie recounts how the US and the nationalist Koreans erased any trace of communist rebels in the country. In the midst of the island’s bitter cold in 1948, some 120 villagers are fleeing into a cave for their very own lives as the US soldiers hunt and execute anyone in sight. With severe cold and hunger to cope with for 60 days, the villagers’ only hope is that the occupation will end soon. This black-and-white film which has won the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival not only offers us a detailed look into the tragedy but also invites us to ponder on our humanity and to stay resilient in any troubles we might be facing.

The list of musicians who owe Pharrell Williams a favour or two must be pretty long by now. After all, here’s a man who’s rarely put a foot wrong in the production business, possessing a Midas touch that has bolstered the career of many an artist. Despite this, he’s never quite made his mark with a solo album, so it comes as something of a surprise at the apparent ease in which his second LP, Girl, has come to fruition. At 40 years of age, the imp-faced ghetto hipster (gipster?) has finally nailed it. This is it. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Girl will be one of 2014’s biggest hits, and yes I know it’s only March. Much has been made of the alleged sexism in last year’s collaboration with buddy Robin Thicke, and although Girl has its moments of dubious taste (see: “Gush”), it does feel like a carefully conceived antidote to the somewhat ‘rapey’ “Blurred Lines”. Here, the emphasis is arguably more celebratory than misogynistic, meaning that Williams manages to avoid falling into the creeper territory of known sex pests like R. Kelly or Chris Brown. Whatever the agenda, Girl is a record that fires out good vibes like some kind of happiness minigun, stuffed with polished beats, tight samples and luxurious breaks, that owe much to late 70s and 80s pop & funk. “Let’s all dance, and elevate each other” he enthuses on “Marilyn Monroe”, adding “You are the feelin’ I’m jamming too” on the Justin Timberlake duet “Brand New”, and that’s before we even get to “Happy” – the insanely catchy and effortlessly upbeat single released last year for animation movie Despicable Me 2. Currently lording it at the top of every chart that matters, the happy clappin’ Motown tone is simply irresistible, and crucially manages to appeal to all ages. The album’s numerous high profile collaborators are wisely deployed, and provide many of the best touches - notably the ever wonderful Alicia Keys on the R’n’B bop of “Know Who You Are”, and Miley Cyrus taking a well earned break from her busy twerking schedule to lend a hand on the mojo-workin’ “Come Get it Bae”. Elsewhere the bongo rumble of “Lost Queen” is a charming paean to femininity full of awkward chat-up lines (“What planet are you from girl, are there others like you there?”), while the airy disco of “Gust of Wind” sounds like a Quincy Jones cut from the late 70s. Everything here is just magic, and after 20 years in the game making everyone else sound good, it’s nice to see him shining solo for a change. Dan Ashcroft

While each device features Bluetooth streaming with AAC and aptX support, ClearAudio+, one-touch listening, aux input, subwoofers with dual passive radiators, and USB charging, the higher-end SRS-X7 comes complete with 32W of power, six hours of playback, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Nikon has unveiled the newest addition to its 1 series of cameras: the 1 V3. Aimed at enthusiast photographers, the V3 improves upon the formula of the outgoing V2 with an improved 18.4 megapixel sensor and new image processing chip. Additional features include built-in WiFi, 1080/60p video capture and slow motion video capture at 720p resolution. There’s also a tilting 3″ LCD touchscreen and the choice of two new 1 NIKKOR lenses: a 10-30mm f/3.55.6 PD-Zoom and 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6. In continued contribution to the wearable tech conversation as prompted by devices like Google Glass and Samsung Gear, new information regarding Google‘s LGproduced smartwatch has surfaced. News of the watch, which still has yet to be officially named, comes ahead of the tech giant’s I/O developer conference in June. So far, we know that the smartwatch will fashion a convenient 1.65 inch IPS LCD display with 280 x 280 pixel resolution. Said to run on Google’s equivalent to Apple’s Siri, the device will also feature 512mb of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. While other details such as the processor and battery type are yet to be reported, look for more information on Google and LG’s forthcoming project ahead of its projected summer announcement.

His voyage also has taken him into some remote places in the world including a memorable journey throughout the Indonesian archipelago in 2003. His other works include photographs, sketches and video recordings have been exhibited worldwide and collected into several catalogues published by a leading French publisher Gallimard.

Imagine of Color is the theme for an exhibition by A.A. Gde Agung Jaya Wikrama, Teguh Santoso and Heri Yahya. Held at Six Point Café, the artists present works that interpret colors in harmony. The colors here are not only about element and visual perception; it implies phenomena within the social environment as well as the artists’ personal experiences. The phenomena and experiences are explored deeper by the artists and beautifully visualized through lines, shapes and brush strokes in each work. Looking through his works; it indeed does not have any particular meaning. His art is just an exploration of lines and spaces with a strong concept behind it. Thus, he says, he does not need people to understand, he just needs people to enjoy his works. His exhibition at Ganesha Gallery titled “Reborn: Stretches and Lines” in 2009 marked his career in the Indonesian art scene. The exhibition also marked his transformation where he took lines from his illustrative works to his contemporary works.

Widi S. Martodihardjo Born into a silversmith family, Widi S. Martodihardjo was raised to love art and prepared to be an artist. He moved to Bandung where he took Visual Communication Design at Pasundan University. It was the beginning of his career when he worked as an illustrator and graphic designer. Besides this permanent job, he also created his own artworks. In 2005, he moved to Bali. He quit his permanent job in 2007 and decided to be an artist.

Widi has proved that his art could be accepted by many. It was in 2010 when he was chosen as an Indonesian Art Award nominee. He exhibited his art at the National Gallery in Jakarta with 100 artists across the archipelago. His exhibition at Gaya Art Space in 2013 displayed thousands of his works that were made within two years. Widi is now back at Ganesha Gallery to exhibit an exhibition titled Lihat, Dengar dan Rasakan (look, listen and feel it). Through this exhibition, he tries to restore the human experience and create criticism about the perception of reality.

Widi wanted to create something exceptional. He wanted to create something new and believed that an independent artist’s tasks are to create identity. His art is fresh and authentic with materials that are rarely used by most artists. The materials used are inexpensive. He explores ‘unused’ things around him. He uses pieces of papers and makes drawings on them using ballpoint pens. Through these materials, he wants to change people’s perception showing that art is simple; it can be done anywhere and anytime even when there is only limited material and money.

We tried their signature massage which lasted an hour and a half and is meant to relax. The treatment started with a foot scrub which immediately put you in a soothing mood. Rock salt is used to exfoliate your feet and a gentle peppermint spray ended the foot scrub with a fresh finish. The massage itself started at your feet with the expert therapist slowly moving from limb to limb in what was an expertly crafted experience.

Yuko Anabela First Indonesian Surfer Ever to Receive Scholarship Award from International Surfing Association

Fifteen-year-old Yukojati Anabela from Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java Indonesia has made history as the first ever Indonesian surfer to be a recipient of the International Surfing Association’s 2013 Individual Scholarship Program, receiving $1,000 USD and the honor of representing her country as an ISA Ambassador. Bela, as her friends call her, is one of the 50 junior surfers (13 girls and 37 boys) from 25 different countries to be awarded this scholarship in 2013. When asked to describe her feelings upon receiving the scholarship, Bela replied, “Of course I was surprised! When I found out I was home alone and I screamed with joy. I couldn’t wait till my mom came home so that I could tell her. I right away called Om Diki and told him how I won, and he was stoked too!” Diki Zulfikar is one of the senior surfers in Cimaja and the leader of the Sukabumi Surfing Association. What makes this even more special is the fact that there are not many girl surfers in Indonesia. When asked if she had any challenges along the way she replied, “To be honest there are a few

challenges, I see it as a part of our culture here so I respect it, as long as I am good to others and present no harm I don’t see why a Muslim girl can’t surf. People generally tell me not to surf because I will get black or surfer girls are too sexy or that I will turn into a big tomboy. I don’t mind what they say as I love surfing and I will keep surfing because I also believe it makes you a very humble person.” When Bela applied to the scholarship program, one of the requirements was that she had to create a budget plan to describe how she would use the $1,000 scholarship money. At the time she listed among other things surf trips, surf contests, school and parents as most important. Regarding her future goals, she says, “For my surfing goals I would really love to win more contests and improve my skills, so hopefully one day I could get a sponsor and may turn it into a lifetime career. For my life goals, I would like to be a good person. I have always been into my basketball and surfing, so I hope one day I can be a successful athlete.”
