It is great to be involved again in the local music scene with The Beat Room we are holding on Friday nights at Pyramid Club and Tuesdays in Jakarta at Kemang’s Fez Dungeon. It has been a long time between drinks since the last time we were involved with the last Beat Rock Fest being held back in 2009. That event was a more sporadic show held occasionally but this time round The Beat Room is on every week, which is challenging but also more rewarding for the event and the bands involved – they need to work and work more often. We have also had a close look at the format of the show too. And the question arose, why are the majority of punters nowadays more comfortable going to DJ music bars and clubs than seeing a live music show? We gave that some thought and decided the reason must be because people want to be entertained but also they want to have a chat with the person next to them and socialize a bit. So we came up with the idea of each band playing two split shifts of 30 minutes with a small set of tasteful rock music between. So far it has worked well with punters and the bands. You will have to come down and try it for yourself this Friday night or next. If you like a bit of quality original music, you won’t regret it. That’s in The Beat Room at Pyramid every Friday night. There are plenty more shows on around town over the next couple of weeks and you can find all that info inside on the Mainstage and HereNow sections. A half-Portuguese and half-English lad, Marc Vedo spent the first 12 years of his life in Portugal before moving to London when he was 13 years old. Now that he lives and works in Bristol in the southwest of England, he has since become one of today’s most impressive house exports from the UK dance music scene. On his way to the illustrious career he has now, he was spotted by DMC which signed him up to their agency and then gave him the honor of being the resident DJ at Naughty But Nice, one of the biggest club nights in the UK at the time.

It was at the turn of the millennium that the masses started to associate his name and creative sets with a rising house maestro. Looking back, it was also in 2000 when Marc founded his own label called Koolwaters and six years later, he got the opportunity to mix the Slinky Global Compilation with tracks from Paul Van Dyk and Armin van Buuren to name a few. With a DJ career spanning almost two decades now, Marc’s diary has seen him globetrotting with big stars such as The Chemical Brothers, Sasha and Tiësto, amongst others, smashing festivals and clubs from official Formula 1 after parties, the DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJ Awards ceremony at Ministry of Sound, to Avalon in Los Angeles and Pacha in New York. Moving on to 2010, he was hailed to be in the Top 10 of “Best Breakthrough DJs” category by DJ Mag and was asked to mix a cover mount CD alongside Boy George, who together with Marc created VG Records in 2011. His 2012 “Chemical Fatboy” found fame by being licensed to Hed Kandi’s Twisted Disco compilation while his 2013 Stealth Records EP “Freak Out” reached Top 10 on Beatport and stayed there for ten weeks. A resident at super club Amnesia, Ibiza for the legendary La Troya, Marc is still hot on the heels with his mix compilation Hotfingers Talks, released on April 21 this year.

Sébastien Léger is a French DJ and producer. His musical family background led him to attend a music school where he built his skills as a trained pianist and drummer. Soon after, he began visiting record stores where he found a new world of sounds and styles. In 1998, he released three EPs “Flagrant Delit”, “Drive Too Busy” and “75019 Paris” under the alias Deaf n’ Dumb Crew. He released his first album Atomic Pop in 1999; followed with the releases on his tracks on many international labels which later built his reputation as a talented producer. In 2007, he launched his own record label Mistakes Music and released the album Planets. His musical influences came from the likes of Daft Punk and other dance electronic music pioneers, as well as notable names such as DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Marco Carola, Laurent Garnier and Paul Johnson.

Tenishia is composed of two Maltese DJs and producers named Joven Grech and Cyprian Cassar who first met through mutual friends in summer 2004 for a long discussion about the prospects of creating a music project together. Joven himself was already into DJing since 1997 whereas Cyprian was adept at playing musical instruments especially the piano since he was 10 years old. Due to the fact that there were no local DJs on the island who did any production at the time, they had no other option than to teach themselves before officially entering the club scene in 2005 which turned out to attract a lot of attention and media coverage.

In Malta, the two gentlemen are considered as national heroes who put Malta on the dance music map. A few months after their debut performance, the duo won the 2005 “Best Newcomer Award”, “Malta’s Best Live Performance Award” and “Best Dance Tune Award” at the Malta Music Awards for three years in a row. Currently ranked #65 in the DJ Mag Top 100 (#50 in 2012), Tenishia’s breakthrough happened after they signed their first major production entitled “Five” to Armada’s Coldharbour Recordings in 2005, then followed with three highlyregarded collaboration tracks with British singer and songwriter Kirsty Hawkshaw on Armada’s top label Armind. One of those tracks, “Outsiders” was nothing short of spectacular, being included into compilations such as Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher, Global Gathering, and Cream Ibiza as well as being a firm springboard to launch their names right onto the laps of some of the biggest names in the industry. They were also the men behind Armada’s flagship Trance World compilation in 2011. Right back home, Tenishia was even introduced by Armin van Buuren himself while on stage playing their radio anthem called “Burning from the Inside”, drawing the crowd’s excitement and deafening response. Kyau & Albert are a trance duo hailing from the Germany. Ralph Kyau first began experimenting with electronic music production in 1990 and performed his tracks live at several underground techno parties. He met Steven Moebius Albert in 1994 which also led them to commence producing music together in 1995 with their similar creative ideas. In 1996, the duo became formally known as Kyau vs. Albert and released their first single titled “Let Me In”. In 1997, they established their record label Euphonic; signing Rough Mullar and Ronski Speed shortly after its establishment. They continued to produce tracks individually under various names; followed with the release on their first compilation We Come in Peace in 1998 on Euphonic. In 2006, along with their raising popularity, they made a slight change in their name to Kyau & Albert.

Born in the southeastern French city of Annecy, Baptiste Zimmer, better known as Zimmer, is a DJ, producer and track remixer who inspires the world with his slow, feel-good tunes. Prior to his move to Paris to study product design and business, wunderkind Zimmer spent a big part of his time playing the piano. Having grown up between Paris and California with short-term stays in Berlin and Guadalajara (Mexico), it was only natural for his tracks to have the ambience of west-coast carefree attitude and Parisian chic intelligence, with a dash of the deeper side of house.

Spinning the decks was no big deal for an experienced DJ like him, yet he only started making original tracks in 2011. His first release entitled “Cruisin” dropped on Portuguese music label Discotexas, which later signed him, put him right at the heart of nu-disco world map. Similar to that, Zimmer’s solid four-track debut EP entitled Horizontal Disco further enhanced the listeners’ ride by the beach with his art of mixing à la Larry Levan, that is, somewhere in between 100 and 125 bpm. From that point onwards, he turned his focus toward reworking and remixing other people’s tracks, most notably Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, Pompeya’s “Power”, Chic’s “Everybody Dance”, Jean Winner’s “Alive And Kicking” and Kamp!’s “Melt”. The first two, especially, got him seriously into touring Europe and America, playing at clubs in the cities and parties at deserted beaches. Besides that, his online presence in the form of free monthly “Zimmer Tapes” which has tens of thousands followers on iTunes, is also instrumental to his career success. As of late, after a short hiatus, Zimmer is back blowing people’s minds with his original “Galapagos”, remix of Moullinex’s “To Be Clear” and his latest Fairy Tales tape.

FEATURE Suicidal Sinatra has been around for years, right? How did it get started, and what was it about rockabilly that got you hooked? Leo: Actually we’ve been around about 14 years. We started with punkabilly like The Living End, the band that influenced Suicidal Sinatra most. After three years we tried hard to let people know our music, which in the end they did. Then we moved on to psychobilly rockabilly which is what we now play and we enjoy it. I think Suicidal Sinatra helped the spread of psychobilly and rockabilly all over Indonesia. It was the skill in the guitar playing that got me hooked to rockabilly. Also the whole culture... the fashion, hotrods, the hair and all that. What’s the difference between rockabilly and psychobilly? Leo: Psychobilly music is darker. The lyrics especially. Rockabilly is more fun and the lyrics also. What’s been happening lately with Suicidal Sinatra? Leo: We are still working on the new album. We will make some singles from that. We just made a video clip from a song from the newest album which was produced by Pukul Rata. How is the Bali live music scene nowadays? Are there enough venues and events going on? Leo: Getting better now. People appreciate music more. Venues are many but not indie and underground. That’s why I have my own coffee shop in Batubulan that welcomes any bands to play on Friday and Saturday. I don’t think there are enough events, there should be more. How about the psychobilly scene, are there many practitioners of the genre? How’s the scene in Indonesia? Leo: I think psychobilly is definitely growing in Indonesia. There is a couple of bands in Bali, Jogya, Surabaya, Bandung and Jakarta. That’s the ones I know personally. I’m sure there are more out there too. Are there psychobilly events or you always play shows with a mix of indie acts? Leo: There are hardly any, maybe a night at Twice Bar, but there are more rockabilly events in Jogya and Jakarta. So how’s the new album, anything new happening with that? Leo: It’s now finished and we’re still waiting for the copies to arrive from Jakarta. So what will you be playing down at The Beat Room next time? Leo: Some rockabilly..psychobilly.. some country with my lap steel guitar. Any final words for the people? Leo: Believe in yourself and your talent. Music is my life.

I was born in Bali and my parents are Balinese. 2. Tell us what inspired you to create Jenja. The inspiration was to create a different atmosphere where patrons can dine in a casual setting and on certain nights unwind down at the club area. 3. Tell us about the location. Jenja is located on Jl. Nakula, Seminyak. This street can be accessed easily from different directions as it is located in the middle of Kuta and Seminyak. 4. Explain what the concept of Jenja is. The concept was to create a casual style environment which features a communal seating indoors and outdoors, an open kitchen, organic cocktails and you can also enjoy good music played by our resident DJs everyday. 5. Tell us what kind of music you want at Jenja. The music genre in Jenja can vary from lounge to urban to nudisco to deep house to techno. Jenja is a two floored building which has a dining area on the first floor, features a club area on the ground floor and is open seven days, whilst Mint is a nightclub venue which is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. 7. Tell us your exact role in Jenja. I’ve got a great team but I’m involved in all different aspects. 8. Tell us what you have been doing lately. I just got a new puppy named Pierre and I have been spending most of my time with him lately. 9. Tell us what’s happening in the next few weeks at Jenja. We have big plans for Jenja. You’ll just have to wait and see what they are. 10. Imagine a group of monkeys are attacking you and you can’t run away. How would you fight them? I wouldn’t fight them, I would try to distract them first.

How to defeat monkeys Some monkeys think that they can take anything they want from you just by baring their teeth and doing a few false charges at you. Which is fair, most people are really afraid of them and will probably just give up without a fight. But according Rusty Shackleford such appeasement is absolutely cowardly, especially coming from us, a far superior species of primate many times larger. Read on.

o I did a little online research on how to fight monkeys and there’s a lot of great advice on how to avoid getting into a fight in the first place and it’s all about giving in to these flea picking thieves. The advice, relatively useful: don’t bare your teeth by smiling, avoid eye contact, give up whatever food you have, and keep your distance. But what if you’ve exhausted all those options and a fight is unavoidable? It’s not that farfetched. A 69-year-old man named Nyoman Gunung was killed in 2012 after being attacked by monkeys, they found his body with bite marks and he had died from blood loss. Authorities believed that the monkeys could have had a rabies, but what animal attacks as a group when infected with rabies? Such primal violence can only be met with primal violence, and believe it or not, as

humans, we definitely have the physical edge in this battle. The long-tailed macaque is prolific in Southeast Asia and roams Bali’s mountains, the Bukit, along some coastlines, and of course, the monkey forest. The biggest males reach about 55 centimeters and weigh in at 9 kilograms although some seem to be heavily overweight. They have large canines which they do not hesitate to use as a threat display.

FEATURE On the other side of the ring is you. The average human weight is 62 kilograms; in essence, you are over six times bigger than their biggest contender and a lot stronger. It doesn’t even seem close to a fair fight, but monkeys are crafty little fellas and their agility is their greatest advantage. In Victorian England, monkeys were pitted against dogs many times their size and they excelled at defeating them. Although his species is unknown, there was a monkey named Jacco Macacco who was able to dispatch 14 dogs in a row by outmaneuvering them and biting their throats. So what’s the best way to fight off a group of monkeys hell bent on trying to kill you (an unlikely scenario, I know)? After vigorously drunkenly talking about this, the best plan of action seems to be grabbing them and bashing them on the ground one by one. Imagine the monkeys descending on you as you grab one as hard as you can, it’ll probably bite and claw at your hand in a bid to escape your grasp, but the greatest injuries that can achieve are superficial punctures on your forearm. The monkey can probably get off two maybe three bites before you smash it with an arm swing into the hard ground below. If you do this right, you’ll cause catastrophic damage to the primate’s skeletal structure. You might not kill it outright, but you

would have effectively taken it out of the fight and you can then turn your focus on the next attacker. If the monkeys are on hardcore attack mode it might be prudent to assign one arm to fending them away from your throat and eyes as that’s the only way that they can take you down. All other wounds will hurt, but with enough discipline and adrenaline, you can work through the pain as you end each of their lives before they realize it’s a losing battle and retreat. It’s a scary world out there and we’re in no way condoning unprovoked violence against monkeys. But one must prepare yourself at all moments; the worst thing you can do is panic and ineffectively defend yourself. Replay what you must do over and over in your mind before you come in contact with monkeys, they’ll have an intuitive understanding that you are not to be messed with. If you wish to train, have a friend throw stuffed animals at you and smash them into the ground as hard as you can. Have your friend throw them at you in volleys so that you can swat them away with your left as you grab and smash with your right. If necessary, you can also foot stomp some of the ambulatory survivors.

FOOD Full of the kind of charm that is fast disappearing from the ‘new Bali’, Kopi Pot is a cosy throwback to the kind of Kuta restaurant that I remember from my first trips to Bali well over a decade ago. In fact, Kopi Pot opened way back in 1990 when there were still coconut groves separating Kuta and Legian, and was renowned for its proper coffee and the finest cakes and desserts in town (which remain as delicious as ever today).

A roadside garden seating area is flanked on one side by the famous ‘Lone Palm Bar’ (so named because of the large palm tree literally growing right through the roof), where you can pull up a stool, grab an icy beer or fruity cocktail and watch the world go by up on this quieter stretch of Jalan Legian. At street level, bamboo chairs and vintage lamps compliment the simple white brick walls and tastefully old-fashioned décor. Choose from a smattering of tables at different levels for a romantic meal, or head upstairs to the open-fronted pavilion for a better view of the beautiful garden. Open all day, Kopi Pot boasts two separate menus, one for breakfast and the other for lunch and dinner. Anyone familiar with Kuta institution Poppies Restaurant will feel right at home here, with a continental-style menu of both Indonesian and international fare that has been perfected by longtime chef Agung, who divides his time between Poppies and Kopi Pot.

FOOD Although it’s been a very long time since I last visited Kopi Pot, the welcoming smiles of the staff and nostalgic familiarity of an ‘old school’ Bali eatery instantly grasps me. A friend and I grab a spot in the garden bale and quickly order up a couple of refreshing Ice Lemon Teas (17k++) happy to be enjoying the almost retro vibe.We get stuck right into a plate of the excellent Cobb Salad (54k++), that incorporates succulent grilled chicken, crispy bacon, lettuce, avocado and an assortment of orange, pear and apple segments doused in cool ranch dressing. It’s a perfectly simple, perfectly satisfying appetizer, and gets the thumbs up all round. For the mains, I tuck into the Spiced Crusted Tuna Steak (76k++), which is grilled to perfection and served with a potato ragout, sautéed seasonal veggies and a salsa of teriyaki, ginger, papaya and capsicum. The flavours are perfectly balanced and it’s impossible to fault, although I do feel a mild twinge of food envy when my friend’s Roast Leg of Lamb (92k++) arrives. The imported joint is served with fresh herbs, veggies and a generous dollop of mint sauce. Plates duly scraped clean, and we decide to split a portion of the enormous Lemon Meringue (31k++) that’s been eyeing us up from the cakes display.We’re not disappointed - as far as lemon meringues go, this one is pretty much as good as it gets. A couple of Tequila Sunrises (79k++) completes the picture, and we both leave feeling rather chuffed to have rediscovered this classic Legian Street treasure. Dan Ashcroft

One of them, if you’ve looked at the trailer, is Spider-Man’s most electrifying foes so far played by Jamie Foxx. Scripted by a team of renowned writers, it looks like this film’s charm might last until its scheduled sequel in 2016.

The king of monsters is making its return in this modern reboot with a distinctly apocalyptic feel as it rampages across the world. Larger and more resilient to a series of nuclear missile strikes, Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla looks so titanic when compared to human creatures that stand defenseless before it. At the heart of this epic battle adventure, the film centers on one courageous soldier which adds a good dose of human elements into it, similar to what director Edwards did earlier in his 2010 movie Monsters. Expect epic destruction and a great deal of military fetishism in this reboot.

Frequently found on stage in 6” heels wielding a Stratocaster, the native Texan and ex Polyphonic Spree associate has a penchant for turning expectations on their head and shaking up people’s perceptions of what ‘arty’ music can be. Having proved herself largely free of any snobby pretentiousness over the course of three previous solo albums, the self-titled LP continues in that tradition – setting to the task in hand with a gleeful abandon and playful tone that is hard not to be won over by. From the get go, the floodgates are opened to a tidal wave of funky chamber rock, indie, pop, manic cabaret jazz and downtempo digital soul. The opening squall of “Rattlesnake” buzzes around like a schizophrenic bumblebee, with a hook that is straight out of an 80’s Sega videogame. From there, we’re straight into the giddy guitars of “Birth in Reverse”; “It’s just an ordinary day/take out the garbage, masturbate” croons Clark mischievously before launching into one of her trademark frantic solos. As with 2012’s David Byrne collaboration Love This Giant, there is a liberal smattering of brass parping away over the top of tracks like the richly textured “Digital Witness” perhaps one of the best ruminations on the all-consuming power of online social media; “If I can’t show it, you can’t see me… Won’t somebody sell me back to me?” she ponders. Despite the seemingly haphazard mix of influences, the songs remain taut and purposeful, with very little in the way of wasteful filler – only two out of 11 tracks topping the four-minute mark. Even the slower numbers like “Prince Johnny” and “I Prefer Your Love” are thrillingly beautiful ballads, driven along by lush soundscapes and dreamy lyrics that owe much to the influence of Kate Bush. Arguably still in the realm of ‘underground’, sitting on her pink plastic throne Clarke looks as assured as any artist out there and for good reason; St. Vincent is the finest music of her career, and is quite simply spectacular from start to finish. This latest variant of its popular interchangeable lens camera is sure to impress with its ability to shoot full 4K video using an external recording device connected via HDMI. Other features slated to appear with the new camera include a smaller 12.2-megapixel sensor that allows a peak ISO of 409,600, along with the ability to use the XAVC S codec and not just AVCHD as before. Now – May 18 Nacivet Arts Gallery Nacivet Art Gallery hosts an exhibition by Titiouan Lamazou titled “Women around the World”. The gallery exhibits works that document the women he encounters during his voyage around the world. His voyage also has taken him into some remote places in the world including a memorable journey throughout the Indonesian archipelago in 2003. Now – July 5 Uma Ubud Uma Ubud transforms into an art gallery for a charity exhibition titled “Vivacious Rhythms of Bali: A Journey through Art” by Malaysian painter Dennis Ho. Titouan Lamazou Born in 1955, Titouan Lamazou is a French photographer, artist, writer, navigator and humanitarian. He was attracted to art in his early years, but found his artistic talent after a series of world voyages. At the age of 17, he decided to navigate and spent several years sailing the seas of the world and made his own travel diary. He won the solo yacht race Vendée Globe in 1991 and published numerous books before devoting himself to his own project titled “Women around the World”. “Women around the World” contains a message on women’s empowerment and gender equality, consisting of photographs and paintings he took during his voyages between 2001 and 2007. These images are beautiful and sometimes haunting, showing the biographies of women around the

globe with their different characteristics. This project also took him to some of the most remote corners of the world, including his voyage through the Indonesian archipelago in 2003. Through this project, he was named “Artist for Peace” in 2003 by UNESCO for his commitment and capacity as a painter, writer and photographer for women’s advancement and assertion of their rights. His works have been collected into several catalogues published by Gallimard and shown in short segments on French television. He has also presented the project to the world, exhibiting them in many countries including the Museum of Man in Paris.
