You have to love this time of year. Beautiful blue skies and not as hot in the middle of the day like it has been over the past couple of months. We should all just raise our hands and rejoice in the simple pleasure of being here on Bali at this time of year. But meanwhile all is not well in some parts of town as the number of people being mugged and seriously injured or even killed during these heinous acts of bag snatching in the southern parts of Canggu recently has been on the increase. The powers that be would do well to have a close look at security in that part of town to try to curb this continuing unacceptable lawlessness before it gets worse. If you’re a female and need to drive home late at night, try not to go alone, hide your bag and always wear a helmet. But on the happier side we’re pleased to see the number one player in town getting off the female glam DJ cycle and into some real dance music focused events. Look out for the new look Sky Dome coming over the next months with some very big international DJ acts on the way to the Kuta hot spot soon - Pete Tong, Ally & Fila, Ferry Corsten, and Chuckie to name just a few. Dance music fans around town should support this stand as it could move the whole of Kuta nightlife into a more salubrious direction. Who knows someone may even do something about those terrible taxi drivers down there once and for all to make the place welcoming to everyone, not just greedy obnoxious taxi drivers and their cohorts. If you haven’t been down to the new Sky Dome since it’s finished this could well be a good moment to do it. There are plenty of shows on around town in the next weeks. Check inside for the full details. And while you are at it, stand up, take a deep breath and appreciate where you are right now in Bali.

SCOOP Sky Dome raises The Bar to a new level We’ve had word that Sky Garden has negotiated some big names for their big room, Sky Dome. Coming to spin their best tracks over the next couple of months are some of the heavy weight greats of dance music, both old and new, with names like Carnage, Pete Tong, Ferry Corsten, Chuckie and The Stafford Bros again on the way, it’s sure to be huge. If you haven’t been to Sky Dome since it has been completely finished, and really is now the premier big room on the island, this is your chance to get it on in downtown Kuta. The room has a capacity of up to 3000 people with VIP sofas and a huge dance floor. Valet parking is coming soon too so you will have no problems with parking down there from July. According to the boss, Sky Garden’s capacity now is over 10 thousand people so yeah, it doesn’t get any bigger anywhere in town and now with the best DJs on the way, the whole thing is ready to go ballistic.

Superman Is Dead Takes Home Indonesian Choice Award 2014 Following the punk-rock band’s triumph at the recent Rolling Stone Indonesia Readers’ Choice Awards 2014 where their album Sunset di Tanah Anarki came out on top, SID has just clinched another national award. This time, Superman is Dead took the podium as the winner of the “Group/Band/Duo of the Year” category at the Indonesian Choice Awards 2014 on May 18. The event, in its inaugural year, was organized by NET TV in conjunction with the TV station’s first anniversary which also featured performances by Ne-Yo and the Far East Movement. Ninda, who is also the brand ambassador for Wrangler jeans. She recently played at an outdoor party, Rave on Valentine, in Lampung alongside other young and talented national DJs.

Fear of Dawn is what we feel every time we go out on the late night shift, but it’s also a duo of talented DJs hailing from Sydney. Consisting of Mark Olsen on electronic drums and Kaiser Waldon spinning decks, the duo create a distinct club sound which blends hints of disco, Dutch house and big room into their tracks. Honestly, Ørjan Nilsen hardly needs an introduction, but for the benefit of you who might have been living in isolation, this page is dedicated to him. Hailing from the Norwegian town of Kirkenes, about 400 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Ørjan Nilsen is a DJ and producer with a creative mind whose captivating musical genre is so diverse it can’t be pigeonholed. He got his first keyboard at the age of seven and his first synthesizer at the age of 16. Born on June 14, 1982 to a family with a musical background, he has set his sights from day one to be the best in this industry.

Ørjan first leaped onto the scene in 2006 under the DJ Governor guise with his debut track “Red Woods” released on Captivating Sounds – now a sub-label of Armin van Buuren’s label Armada Music. This track was a real defining moment in his ascension into the big leagues. What followed next were a few more awesome club-destroyers such as “La Guitarra” (2008), “Lovers Lane”, “So Long Radio”, “Shoutbox!” (2010) and more. In 2011, Ørjan eventually dropped his debut album entitled In My Opinion on Armada Digital. Later on, he was placed #32 on DJ Mag Top 100 in 2012 and then #49 on the same list in 2013. He also has done epic collaborations with most notably Armin van Buuren (“Belter”), with John O’Callaghan (“Crispy Duck”), with Adam Young (“In the Air”) and with Fingerling (“Fable”). His massive “The Late Anthem” was even ranked #1 on Beatport Trance chart. As a DJ, Ørjan’s has played at A State of Trance 600 Sao Paulo in 2013, Tomorrowland Belgium in 2013 and A State of Trance, ASOT 650 in Argentina as well as in Miami in March this year. Just last year, he hit the stores with his second album entitled No Saint Out Of Me. Ørjan also regularly does remixes like the ones he did for Strobe’s “Liebe” and Armin van Buuren’s “Gaia - Aisha”.

Natalia Mastro, AKA Sax on Legz, is Sydney-based DJ and saxophonist. She entered the dance music scene in 2008 but has been performing since she was nine. She made her way up from her school band to the Sydney Youth Orchestra which then led her to the Australian Institute of Music in Surry Hills Sydney when she was 17 where she studied a Bachelor of Music. She later began teaching students and finally landed the prestigious role as conductor of her own orchestra. She is now the only touring Australian female DJ and instrumentalist and has been playing at Australia’s top festivals and clubs.

Jose Abel Ramos Jimenez or simply Abel Ramos is a Spanish hotshot in the field of DJing, producing and remixing. Born in February 1973 and growing up in Madrid, Abel’s career as a DJ started when he was merely 15 years old. That was in 1988 when the owner of a small Madrid club told him to substitute for a DJ who was ill. His was influenced by 80’s acts such as Human League, Nitzer Ebb and acid house in general. Soon, his mixes reached nationwide recognition while amassing more fans.

With such a huge following all over Spain, Abel Ramos has won a number of awards including Best National DJ from Deejay Magazine – the Spanish counterpart of Mixmag. Following his newly found fame, he decided to take his tunes across borders in 2001. So far, he has graced numerous dance and music festivals like Sensation in Madrid in 2008 (being the only Spanish representative), Rock in Rio in Madrid, Global Gathering in Poland and many more. Abel is also a star in Sweden, having one of his productions “Rotterdam City of Love” signed by Axwell to his label, Axtone. Besides his tour overseas, Abel also spares a good amount of time to throw his annual eight-hour SOLO party at home that attracts around 5000 people and is involved in projects namely the New Iberican League (with DJ Chus and David Penn) which saw them play at UMF Miami and Dance Valley Netherlands. Remixing-wise, Abel is also such a pro. His remix of Fatboy Slim’s “Right Here, Right Now”, David Guetta’s “When Love Takes Over” and “Sexy Bitch” can all testify that Abel is one of today’s best and most in-demand remixers in the world. Abel also hosts a weekly radio show on one of Spain’s most popular radio stations, Loca FM.

Semar are a three piece outfit playing some classic rock music and ballads. They have played The Beat Room a number of times and you may have seen them all over town as a cover band. They are a hard working rock group with a load of potential and The Beat sat down for a chat with Made Agus Laksmana, who happens to play one of the sweetest rock guitars around and sings some of the best vocals of the local Bali rock scene. Tell us about yourself. How old are you and where were you born? Agus: I’m the lead singer and guitarist in Semar. I’m 19 years old and I was born in Denpasar but my parents originally came from Singaraja.

How long has Semar been around, who are the members and how did you meet? Agus: Semar first performed in 2009. The drummer and I have been together since then. Ame is the drummer, he’s 23 years old and from Singaraja. Adit is the bassist, he’s 29 and from East Java. Ame and I met through his uncle, and

And the band started as a cover band right? Agus: Our main vision was to promote our original music. We thought we could make the world a better place from our music but we realised that we can’t survive just from playing our own stuff. We’re not from rich families who can give us the facilities to make music, and also we have learnt a lot playing covers.

How often do you play original music? And where does the band normally play it? Agus: We always play our own music every time we play the covers. We play five times a week and sometimes more. We do 45-minute sets and three sets per gig, and we always put two or three original songs in the mix. That’s how we promote our music. But we have also played in school and music festivals. We have more than 10 prizes as the best band in those band competitions. And most of it while playing our own songs. So Made, how did you get involved with music at the beginning? He inspired me very much and he was one of the best blues guitarists in Bali, his name was Yan De, and unfortunately he passed away in a motor bike accident after playing a gig one night. Yes we’ve made demos and we’re getting better at recording, but we haven’t as yet published the material that we’ve recorded. place during lunch time will tell you that it has quite a large following. The restaurant has a very utilitarian design with bare concrete and steel dominating its Spartan interior. The centerpiece of the restaurant is the display area where you line up and select what you want on your plate. Behind the display is an open kitchen manned with cooks who constantly work to replace items taken from the display. You get the overall feeling that the

entire restaurant is like a constantly working machine that seems to move at a reasonable pace with cooks, servers, and patrons flowing efficiently through the space. The food itself is a fantastic spread of Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, and modern salads that are all readymade with exception to three Japanese curries that are made to order and the dessert. Japanese chef Kazu, who previously worked at Kaizan and had his own warung-style Japanese restaurant called Kazuya designed the over 50 dishes on display and on the a la carte menu.

Another stand out winner at Kzu is their desserts. We highly recommend their Cheese Cake (24k) which is absolutely amazing. It’s everything you want in a cheesecake, nothing more, and nothing less. Whatever the project du jour, so much of what he writes could be interpreted as either fiercely confessional, or confusingly abstract, giving him an air of mystery that continues to set him apart from other music biz peers. As is so often the case, artists churn out their best work in times of turmoil or romantic despair, but on Everyday Robots – the first truly solo LP of his career, Albarn (now approaching 50) appears well grounded and in more of a pensive mood, calling on key locations that have shaped his life thus far. In preparation for recording, Albarn and his pal (Nigerian drummer) Remi Kabaka biked the wintry streets of Leytonstone to revisit a number of his childhood haunts. Perhaps most notable being the Hollow Ponds – an area of shadowy woodland frequented by the young artist, which gave way to the melancholic album track of the same name. Also on the route, his West London stomping grounds and the song “You & Me”, where Class A addiction became a way of coping with the pressures of fame: “Jab jab, digging out a hole in Westbourne Grove/tinfoil and the lighter”. In a musical sense, both songs are key to setting the tempo for the rest of the album, which sounds like Albarn is stranded in some post apocalyptic junkyard making noises out of bits of old audio equipment. Cassette drawers clicking shut, broken plastic appliances being dragged by their power cables across other bits of knackered VHS paraphernalia, and I swear there’s the longforgotten sound of an old dial up telephone bookending each stanza of the stunning “Lonely Press Play” – a song which is lifted by soft fingerpicked guitar ditties and Albarn’s soulful Thames Estuary murmur. Mixed in with the gloomy confessional flashes are more upbeat allegorical accounts of parakeets (“Parakeet”), submarines (“The Selfish Giant”), baby elephants (“Mr. Tembo”) and passive aggressive 80’s video game baddies (“Hostiles”), meaning that really, we’re still none the wiser about when Damon Albarn is baring his soul or just mucking about. When the results sound this wonderful though, none of that really seems to matter. Dan Ashcroft

A Collection of Works By Now – May 26 | Biasa Art Space Biasa Art Space presents a group exhibition by seven international and local contemporary artists, displaying new works along with existing works from the gallery and artists’ stockroom. Titled “A Collection of Works By”, this exhibition features an eclectic mix of sculptures, paintings, sketches, prints and mixed media presentations linked to the contemporary art scene in Indonesia. ennis Ho is a Malaysian painter who has been harmoniously blending in with Balinese society, residing in Peliatan, Ubud for the past three and half years. Dennis spent his childhood in a multiracial melting pot of people from different roots; starting to draw before he even learned to write. Over the last three decades, he has travelled far into the depths of Southeast Asia; exploring its old culture, soaking in the diverse of its varied societies, reaching out to people and connecting with them. He spent many years observing and documenting the traditional arts on this rich and exotic part of the world. His art is a freeflow expressionistic style, inclining more toward realism. He does not have any precise reference, nor does he care to seek one. By not having any formal art education, he has not allowed himself to be indoctrinated into a politically correct way of painting. Furthermore, his influence has much

to do with his philosophical perspective of life. Through his art, he aims to educate and preserve the rich cultures he found during his expedition. He thinks that there are so much beauty and diversity that distinguishes those cultures if it is seen from a personal point of view. These days, he paints Balinese traditional dance and other cultural subjects. In his journey to discover the beauty and richness of the culture, he shows his gratitude by giving back to communities he encounters with the hope that they continue to respect and preserve their unique cultures. His current exhibition at Uma Ubud is one of his efforts to help preserve the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s classical dance and music by paying tribute to one of its most revered performance art; the Gong Kebyar music, the Kebyar Trompong and Kebyar Duduk dances. www.beatmag.com

The hallway leading up to the spa is paved with white pebbles as well as small streams running on either side. Upon entering the Bamboo Spa, we are greeted with a refreshing towel and a lime and lychee concoction. The spa is an interesting labyrinth composed of curved bamboo stems and long mirrors. It boasts 14 treatment rooms, a reflexology lounge, a private steam room, a beauty salon, a spa café and also a L’Occitane retail boutique. Each treatment room has a distinctive concept and atmosphere.

Bamboo Spa’s attention to detail is impressive. Before even starting the treatment, we were asked to fill in a form in order for them to be sure of any problem areas and allergies as well as massage strength preferences. We tried their

signature Traditional Balinese Massage which lasted for an hour for US$ 73++, although the treatment menu does feature impressive alternatives such as Shirodara, Ayurvedic Journey and Angelica Fountain of Glow Facial.
