It’s hard to keep up with everything going on around this island at the moment. There is so much happening our beat photographers are winding up in the proverbial ditch of the late night-life, worn out and dazed. With Pete Tong playing three times over a week in different spots and Norman Jay being in town at Mozaic just being the tip of the clubbing iceberg, it was one of those two week periods that either makes or breaks you. We ended up with a few wounds but still soldiering on like never before. I personally had one of the biggest nights of the year and it happened to be a mild mannered Thursday night of all days. Who knows what’s install over the next two weeks but with a quick glance at the Main Stage and What’s On sections inside it will all become clear. It’s incredible how communications are nowadays. A friend took off for Europe last week and we were chatting on the phone here while he was on the way to the airport, in transit along the way to Europe and then when he arrived in Amsterdam I was receiving his first impressions of the city life. It wasn’t long ago one would have to send a letter which might arrive two weeks later and then a reply, arriving back two weeks after that. It appears now is always the moment. Things happening so quickly, decisions being made right now and the mind never really getting a chance to rest. It’s no wonder we see ourselves partying like there is no tomorrow so often nowadays. It’s the only way to rest and get away from the day to day NOW reality of our existence. Thankfully we are in a great place right now to have some fun when you need or want it. The Bali nightlife RIGHT NOW is as good as it has been in years - get out there and enjoy it, dear readers.

UNAOC to be held in August Indonesia will host the sixth Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Bali, on August 29-30. The UNAOC Global Forum, themed “Unity in Diversity: Celebrating Diversity for Common and Shared Values,” is the first time that the conference will be held in the Asian region. The Sixth UNAOC Global Forum will be attended by 114 members of UNAOC Group of Friends, including eleven state leaders, 25 international organizations, and one hundred people from the UNAOC youth delegation. The 11 heads of state to attend the conference will be from Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Qatar, Austria, Myanmar, China, India, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, and South Africa. According to Foreign Affairs Ministry Director General of Public Information and Diplomacy, Esti Andayani, the forum is expected to inspire measures curbing extremism and fostering pluralism and diversity for world peace.

Aly & Fila are two musical shamans currently dubbed as the music pharaohs of Egypt. Hailing from Cairo, Aly Amr Fathalah and Fadi Wassef Naguib have tamed the land of pharaohs for close to a decade already. Aly & Fila’s history is an enigma in itself to the general public, but the most important thing is that they can purvey some uplifting trance for music aficionados in the midst of what Egypt has been facing in recent years.

Aly & Fila built their first small studio and started DJing in 1999. Soon, their EDM proved to be, by and large, what Egypt needed the most, an uplifting tune to move them as a nation, a beacon. They took off in the national scene very fast. In 2003, their massive hit “Eye of Horus” became a global phenomenon, sweeping the global dance scene and raising them to A-list status. Then, two more tracks entitled “Spirit of Ka” and “Thebes” as well as a few huge remixes came out and served as auxiliary legs to support their fame worldwide. By 2008, they already reached #31 in DJ Mag only to get #20 in the same magazine in 2013. A year later, they founded their own label named Future Sound of Egypt which has a weekly radio podcast and is now part of the mighty Armada Music. To mark the special occasion, Aly & Fila released their debut album entitled Rising Sun in 2010. The gentlemen further raised the bar by dropping their best anthem yet “We Control The Sunlight” ft. Jwaydan – voted #1 in the A State of Trance radio Top 20 of 2011. They’ve also headlined EDM’s biggest festivals like EDC - Las Vegas, Tomorrowland, Global Gathering, Dance Valley, Stereosonic and WMC. They also regularly rock ASOT events including ASOT 650 in spring this year after the release of their second artist album – Quiet Storm.

The career of DJ Bobby Suryadi started in Bandung in 1988 and he later became an instructor at a DJ School named IDJS in his home town. He moved to Jakarta in 1990 and spun vinyl at many clubs such as Manhattan, Atlanta, Horizon, Ebony and M Club along with other venues in Indonesia until he found his way to one of Jakarta’s most famous clubs in Kota, the now defunct Stadium.

Bobby has shared the decks in big events, like Gatecrasher, Jakarta Movement, Godskitchen and has played with Sasha and Armin Van Burren. He has also released a compilation album called Stadium Essential Mix with DJ 19 of Japan as well as a CD promo entitled Putera Choice Part One. He has also won numerous awards for his DJing from Ravelex, Juice Magazine, Paranoia, Indoclubbers, and Hard Rock FM (DJ of the Year 2012). Glen Horsborough is from the north east of England and is not only known well among the clubbers but also to the many listeners of his radio show. The 40-year-old DJ who goes by DJ KFC at night (just for the record, no pun intended, they are his initials) embarked on spinning records when he was 30. He is now responsible for designing the music played in many bars and restaurants such as The White Rabbit at Dempsey Hill.

Pigeonholing Keith is no easy task. He has touched the multitudes of genres with true skill and appreciation. He is going places, from Shanghai, to Hong Kong, and to Bali. His eclectic taste of bespoke music has headlined many exclusive events such as the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Sessions (2008-2010), the 10th Anniversary Zoukout Music Festival, World Of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) and F1 Rocks and at up and coming venues like Kee Club Hong Kong and Alfred Dunhill’s flagship store in Shanghai. DJ KFC has also been the man behind many exclusive parties for international fashion houses as well as for auto giants. On a side note, Keith was one of the founders of one of Singapore’s indie bands, Electrico, in 1996 which wrote and sang the theme song of Singapore National Day Parade in 2009, however he left the band a year after it being founded. In 2013, DJ KFC released his Singaporean summer themed “Summer Son” mix on Ouissam Mokretar’s Cliché Records. That aside, DJ KFC currently holds weekly residencies at Loof and Over Easy as well as at Tanjong Beach Club, all are in Singapore.

New Yorker Ryan Cavanagh AKA Slow Hands is surprisingly new to electronic music but has developed such a distinctive style. He began his musical journey when he went to college to study classical guitar and composition. For some reason in 2001, he dropped out of school, bought a copy of Logic and dove into house and techno. He then started to play constantly around Baltimore and New York, and eventually attracted Gadi Mizrahi of Wolf+Lamb who gladly took him under his wing. Ryan debuted as Slow Hands in 2009 with the release of “Fast Tongue” on W+L, and saw a rising international prominence since then. Besides maintaining himself as Slow Hands, he also works on a number of different side projects like Male Madame on Fade Records and Worst Friends which is his experimental group on Moodgadget.

A year after his debut, he released a remix of No Regular Play’s “Ladyluck” which was praised in print and online, and described by Resident Advisor as ‘make-out disco’ that ‘sorely longs to be played outdoors’. His remix on Sade’s “Sweetest Taboo” is notably seductive, while his smooth touch on the cover of Bon Iver’s “Tower” mixes a soft-spoken vocals and a Caribbean style beat creating summer-ready music. A release titled “Rhabarbarum” was his chilled out rework of Aphex Twin’s “Rhubard” and featured on Sydney record label Future Classic’s first official DJ compilation. His other discs include the well-acclaimed “Rough Patch”, as well as remixes on Cameo Culture’s “Parts of You And I”, Runaway’s “Indoor Pool” and World’s End Press’ “Second Day Uptown”. Besides producing music, Slow Hands has played for Wolf+Lamb’s legendary Marcy Hotel as well as a residency for New York’s promotion and webzine Autobrennt.

W e h a d a f e w q u e s t i o n s f o r t h e i r v e ry ta l e n t e d s i n g e r . 1. How did you guys come to be? Well we met in a small coffee shop on Dewi Sri called Espress. My girl friend worked there and she introduced me to Dewa (now our percussionist) He was/is the barista there, and was so friendly and funny. I just liked him right away. My friend mentioned I sang and he said it would be cool to have live music there and that idea excited me... I started hanging out there often and one day, Dewa introduced me to Adex (now Tiga’s guitarist), and we started jamming sometimes in the back of the café behind the kitchen, Dewa was just supportive and said he wanted to talk to the owner but started little by little banging on the empty water gallon. He wasn’t a percussionist but he was musical and had played some guitar and bass. The vibe was right and then we where three. We met our manager, Bobby, at the coffee shop and after jamming and talking, he invited us to his space where we started rehearsing for the next two months and began managing and mentoring us.

2. What kind of music do you play? That’s a kinda hard question to answer because our tastes vary. But we’re kind of soft-pop with a bohemian influence. Or I’d like to think of us that way, but really we are still finding ourselves and exploring. 3. What are your musical influences? I’m influenced by bands like - Of Monsters and Men, Angus & Julia Stone, Walk Off The Earth, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton (from my dad), Radiohead, Bobby Arthur (Tiga’s manager) and a great rapper and DJ named Kamau that often comes and supports and plays with us. He is from the San Fran area. It’s not only western music or musicians that interest me, there are some local bands we met through Bobby that came to jam with us that I really adore and am so amazed and inspired by, like Dadang and Dialog Dini Hari, and Deep Sea Explorers to name a few.

FEATURE 4. If you could live in any era, which era would you choose? Why? I was born in the 90s in Bali so this is my era. We have been blessed with so many opportunities I would have to say now!

5. What are your earliest musical memories? My dad, he’s my inspiration, my motivation, and my muse. He introduced me to this magical little thing called music, that has been affecting my life ever since. He’s a great musician and a great artist. And now I know why I can’t live without music. I also have rhythm and blues in my core and he is the reason why.

10. Promote yourself. Right now our home base is Espress Coffee Shop on Dewi Sri, where the band was created. We play there every Saturday without exception, and have done so for the last six months since our first gig beginning of January this year. Every Sunday we play at Kaki Lima at the end of Batu Bolong in Canggu, where we do the Sunday Sunset Session with the best sunset view on the island. You can also catch us every few weeks or so at The Straw Hut on Wednesdays. We have also played at Biasa Art Space at their Friday Market a couple times, on Friday of course. It’s such a nice place to hang out. We also do some private functions here and there, we are super grateful we have been offered so many gigs and get to chose the ones we love to play. Oh and keep an eye out for our EP.

6. What would you sacrifice to be famous? Sleep. With the help from our manager, Bobby Arthur, who’s not just our manager but also a singer song writer himself. We get it together, rewrite, and work on the material every week. Then I bring these ideas to the band for their input and influence. We intend to release our first EP next year. 9. With the Russian annexation of Crimea from the Ukraine and the fighting in the Donetsk region, what do you think are the Kremlin’s geopolitical ambitions for the immediate future? I know that there’s a war going on, lots of them, and I thank god that I changed my mind about studying international relations at uni, and chose English instead which has been a big help with my writing process. FOOD SCOOP The Sunset Menu at Gado Gado. Gado Gado has a new sunset set-menu that is well worth a try. We just came across it on a visit to the beachside restaurant in Seminyak. For 500k ++ you get a four course meal including dessert and three glasses of wine to pair each of the meal courses. The dishes we tried were all delicious, consisting of a swordfish carpaccio, sea brim and wagyu beef. The dessert was a lemon sorbet and cheesecake ensemble, yumm. The menu changes periodically, all reflecting the high standards of Chef Quib’s exacting kitchen and refined dishes.The food part is also available at 350k ++ but you would be a mug to miss the three glass wine pairing at this price. Remember the Sunset Menu is only available between 5pm and 7pm so be early. A New Italian in Seminyak Also just opened down on Double Six Beach is the new restaurant Seminyak Italian Food. It’s on the first floor of the brand new, partly opened Double Six Hotel overlooking Seminyak beach. It’s a casual but elegantly designed Italian eatery with an uncomplicated menu that should satisfy the most fussy of Italian cuisine afficionados. The wine list is also quite spectacular with an excellent selection of Italian wines amongst others. Created by Australian/Italian celebrity chef, Robert Marchetti, SIF should become a major hit with the well-healed Seminyak crowd and it’s just the beginning of more great things to come at this new hotel with a legendry heritage in Bali nightlife. Brunch time at Mama San. It’s already been available over a month, but the Mama San Sunday Brunch is definitely rocking full steam ahead. The Beat visited last weekend, and amongst the bustling Sunday lunchtime crowd that was flocking to the famous Asian-styled restaurant run by the street-food king himself, Will Meyrick, excellent dishes were being planted and consumed in quick fashion on the tables of the cosmopolitan crowd. It isn’t a set brunch menu but a la carte, meaning you choose what you want and after some investigation it would seem that the price would be comparable to any of the set menus going around town, coming in for food at approximately 300k per head. Great Asian delicacies await like Fried Pakbao, Char Aui Pork Steamed Buns, Steamed Snapper Dumplings, School Of Prawns With Chili Garlic and Lime, Steamed Pork Ribs With Ginger and Garlic, just to name a few off the over 30 piece brunch menu. The room is bustling like any Wan Chi, Hong Kong eatery. Get down there for a look and taste next Sunday.

The menu down here echoes the pool café with plenty of appetizers and small bites, but

also takes in a pleasing mix of Western favourites like burgers and wraps, and Indo classics like oxtail soup and fried rice courtesy of Balinese chef Taskara, who spent nine years at the Conrad in Benoa before lighting up the kitchen at U Paasha. If you do end up sleeping in a bit too long, fear not – U Paasha has a ‘breakfast anytime’ policy, meaning you’ll never miss the most important meal of the day – even if it’s already well past morning. During a late afternoon visit, a friend and I pulled up a table at Alcove and got to try out the delicious Lumpia Semarang (55k++) along with the Nori Fish Fritters (60k++) before getting stuck into a couple of mains in the form of Miso Glazed Gindara (95k++) and Mushroom Ravioli (85k++). Stuffed with prawns, bamboo shoots and shredded chicken, the crispy lumpia are a treat for the tastebuds, especially

when dunked in the accompanying chilli soy dip.The fritters don’t last long either and are quickly scoffed down, as is the ravioli, but the star of the show has to be the beautifully tender slowcooked gindara fish which just falls apart under your fork. A trio of vanilla, pandan and coffee Crème Brulee (55k++) finishes us off in fine style, before we retire downstairs to U Paasha’s super chic Alibi Bar for a Geisha Martini (98k++) and Virgin Angel (38k++), enjoying the opportunity to people watch from the comfort of one of the sofas out front. Despite boasting an impressive cast, this movie lacks a number of things on some areas that Disney veterans Will Finn and Dan St. Pierre as the directors should not have missed. However, it is still a good enough distraction for the kids who still love the attention-drawing clichés.

According to Japanese folklore, a kitsune is a sort of shapeshifting fox thingy that is said to be able to change its appearance at will. It’s a pretty apt moniker for the chic Paris-based music/ fashion label, of the same name, which has been digging up obscure tracks from all four corners of the globe and slapping them down on disk since 2002. Like some kind of modern day Alan Lomax, the third installment of Kitsuné’s America compilation series sees the label boss and chief compiler Gildas Loaë championing the best of lesserknown Stateside artists, throwing together a contemporary mash up of indie, electro and pop tracks that is just as enjoyable coming through a pair of cans in your living room as it would be soundtracking an interstate road trip. It’s pleasingly diverse mix that kicks off to the dusty acoustic guitar and sultry vocals of “Karma”, courtesy of the NYC-based female duo Beaû. From there the album slides straight into a more electro vibe, particular highlights being the wonderful “1000 Roses” from Tokyo-based California transplant Sunni Colòn, and the silky smooth “Montauk Fling” from Lawrence Rothman. The album really hits its stride with America series regulars Heartsrevolution and the puzzlingly titled “Kishi Kaisei”, which sounds like Little Dragon covering an Empire of the Sun cut. Similarly, NAVVI’s “Speak” offers a lush soundscape of throbbing bass and dreamy ambience for one of the compilation’s numerous highlights. A sprinkling of weaker inclusions (“Fool”, “Cut 4 Me”) suggest that it would have made more of an impact with two or three fewer tracks, and at times the mixture of genres can be somewhat jarring – Issue’s grimy “Ten Monks and the preceding country-tinged Max Jury track “Christian Eyes” standing at particular odds. There’s no question that Loaë has a finely tuned ear for a corking tune, but some stricter quality control would have turned this good album into a great one. That said, America 3 is unquestionably a refreshing assortment of new wave that showcases just how much talent is out there beyond the monotony of most commercial American music releases. To paraphrase an article by Richard Catlett Wilkerson, “The habitual mind hears the same thing every day…preparing to hear something different requires a break in this flow.” Dan Ashcroft

Living Lobby Art by Tomoko Konno Now – August 28 Conrad Bali Award-winning ceramic artist Tomoko Konno presents her most recent collection of sculptured art created in Jenggala ceramics studio in an exhibition titled “Sway”. Held in Conrad Bali, the exhibition explores the artist’s ethereal world of intricate and organic shapes, and displays mainly produced objects such as works of porcelain, electric kiln, gas kiln and pottery which have been the art forms in Japan over centuries. ede Kantiana found a love in photography when he borrowed his uncle’s pocket camera and fell even deeper when he was introduced to a photography site. He wanted to take his new hobby more seriously, but at the time, the high price of the trade was his biggest obstacle. He finally got his first DSLR camera from his former boss, but realized that capturing images using a more professional camera was even harder. As time went by, he improved by teaching himself. His hobby became a side job and made the money to add and upgrade his tools with the better ones. For him, humans are unique with their expressions, traits and habit that can quickly change. Every movement made is beautiful and he loves to capture it, especially feminine ones.

Kantiana thinks that the most precious element of a photo is the moment which can be rare and unpredictable. With his camera, he freezes the time through a photograph in a hope to share its story with other people in the future. During his career, Gede Lila has received prestigious awards in numerous events including the People’s Choice in a photography competition by Australia Calling in 2011 and the top position in a competition by a photography foundation Candra Yana. He was accepted in international salons of photography such as AlThani and Trierenberg Circuit 2012. Some of his photos are also used for numerous publications including magazines, books, calendars, companies and the media overseas. His latest images, which also marks his debut solo exhibition, were displayed at the lobby of the Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana. It started with the ritual foot cleansing where each foot was intently washed and treated with peppermint oil leaving it fresh and cool. Balinese massage was utilized for the treatment; the masseuse worked into the body starting from foot all the way up to the head with a firm acupressure and stroke, as well as percussion method for legs and back. It was followed by a gentle sea salt body scrub to exfoliate the dead skin. After a shower, the session finished with a nice 20-minute sauna to truly relax and revive.
