It is so busy around southern Bali right now. The traffic is an all time downer again with vehicles crawling along on most routes around town at a snail’s pace. From Bintang to half way down Jalan Oberoi took me an hour in the car the other afternoon. The combination of local school holidays and Ramadan must be totally rocking for business, but the number of out-of-town cars around is beyond staggering. If you want to go anywhere make sure you add at least 15 minutes or more of traffic jam to get there on time. Thankfully we have the Simpang Siur underpass already or it would be total grid-lock all over town by now. The next hot spot due for a fix has to be the Sunset Road/Kerobokan Raya intersection, which is now just about gridlocked all day long. However, that will only cause more macet further up the road, like the LP/Batubelig traffic lights and then the Tony Skate Park Umalas lights, so basically in the end, the whole of the Canggu access road has to be upgraded ASAP. Is there a budget for such a thing Pak Pastika? It’s definitely time to find it if there isn’t already. The people are crying for it and so is the future of tourism in the northern areas. So we are surely in the thick of the high season now. People everywhere, all the restaurants and bars are ramming them in, and the airport at some points is so crazy that it’s hard to imagine anyone every wanting to come back (after they have been thru the atrocious VOA and immigration section of it). I arrived through the international part the other evening and man, it was terrible. The person I was travelling with was on a tourist visa and I had to wait over an hour on the other side. Half of the immigration stations were empty with around six or seven flights arriving around the same time. Ridiculous. And let’s not talk about the baggage handling. Phewww, who is organising all that? Okay, I’ve had my whine, and bring on the high season! It should be fun. But meanwhile, on July 9 Indonesia votes for a new president to take the country into a prosperous and abundant future. We hope and trust the best man will win and possibly do something about the infrastructural problems facing this island within the next year. Peace out.

SCOOP The 1000th Show of Bali Agung Let the Legend Lives On Since Bali Agung’s first show on August 31, 2010, it has been a spectacular daily show that involves hundreds of talented dancers, musicians and shadow puppet masters. The team is lead by Peter Wilson, a highly respected director, writer, producer and puppeteer as well as I Made Sidia, a master Balinese Dalang. The Bali Agung family has grown in numbers over the years with 210 dancers and 30 musicians today of which the youngest is four years old and the oldest is 75 years old. The 1000th show on June 17 will depict the tragic and heroic legend of King Sri Jaya Pangus. In conjunction with that. The 7th Edition of Ombak Bali International Surf Film Festival is Coming to Town For all surfers and surf enthusiasts, we are sure that you have been waiting for this annual surf film festival. For three days (on July 18, 19 and 20), La Plancha at Seminyak will be the host of what will be fabulous and mind-blowing three nights by the beach full of epic visuals, stunning stories and inspirational journeys. EXPERIENCING CULTURE AND EDM AT DREAMFIELDS BALI 2014 Bali once again will be the host of another international event; this time it’s Dreamfields Festival taking place on August 16 at GWK Cultural Park. SCOOP PLANS FOR MATA ELANG INTERNATIONAL STADIUM IN BALI ANNOUNCED PT. Mata Elang International Stadium (MEIS) has announced that it will be closing its premier 15,000seat concert hall stadium in Jakarta and that it will instead open three new, larger stadiums in 2015, one in Jakarta and two in Bali. During a press conference, representative for PT. MEIS’ board of directors, Henry Yosodiningrat explained that PT. MEIS is closing its concert hall in Ancol. As a substitute, they will build three other stadiums which are expected to be operating next year.

Born Vincent Williams in New York, Spinna is regarded a one of most versatile producers and DJ in today’s music arena. He has been collecting records since childhood and began experimenting with turntables at the age of 11. His professional career started as a radio and party DJ at Binghamton University, which he then followed with a move to the recording industry in 1994 as a member of the underground hip-hop group Jigmastas. Throughout his career, he has broken down musical barriers between the worlds of hip hop, deep house, soul and jazz working with everyone from Mos Def, Masta Ace, Pharoahe Monch and Eminem, to Eric Roberson, N’dea Davenport, and Mary Mary to Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers and Sergio Mendes. Spinna has also launched his own dance music label named WonderWax Music.

Spinna’s discography continues to grow immensely as he regularly releases high-quality singles, albums and mix tapes. His most memorable remix on Shaun Escoffery’s “Days like This” has transformed into a worldwide dancefloor anthem, which in turn catapulted him into his current presence in the soulful house music scene. In 2002, he signed into BBE Records and released his cult classic full-length production LP Here to There which crossed multiple genres and garnered the attention of serious music fans worldwide. His celebrated Stevie Wonderinspired DJ performances namely Wonder-Full, gathered overwhelming fanfare on each occasion done around the globe. The success of these events also led to several collaborations with Stevie Wonder himself including the remixes for “My Love is on Fire” and “Sweetest Somebody” from Stevie’s A Time to Love in 2005. Besides his tributes to Stevie Wonder, he also has produced numerous tracks and remixes for notable artists including Michael Jackson, De La Soul, DAS EFX, MC Eiht, George Michael and Mos Def to name a few.

Hailing from Switzerland, Tamara Hunkeler or better known as Dinka can be considered one of the queens of progressive house music. She has a long affair with music, listening to Pink Floyd in her early years and getting into trance during her teenage years. She took on the Dinka moniker from a small ethnic group located in Southern Sudan, which also means to represent her music being universal in nature. Besides being a solo act, she is also a part of Swiss DJ group The Helvetic Nerds, together with EDX, Leventina, Chris Reece and Daniel Portman.

She released her first album The Temptation in late 2008 on S2 Records which gained huge positive feedback from many dance communities and played by biggest DJs all around the globe. In 2010, she released Hotel Summerville which continued the successful and distinctive musical structure she has been following over the past four years. The band Gigi was formed in 1994 by Aria Baron (guitar), Thomas Ramdhan (bass), Ronald Fristianto (drums), Dewa Budjana (guitars) and Armand Maulana (vocals). These five original members were already established jazz and rock musicians. Today, after two decades, the band comprises Armand (vocals), Budjana (guitars), Thomas (bass) and Hendy (drums).

Their first album Angan, released in 1994, sold 100,000 copies. A year later Gigi took it up a notch with their next album entitled Dunia with its hit singles “Janji” and “Nirwana” and sold 400,000 copies. The band grabbed a number of awards afterwards, among others The Best Group in the Country award at Indonesia Musik Emas event. In the years that followed, Gigi dropped an album every year with a short break in their fifth year to do an overseas tour (Brunei, Malaysia and Japan). In 1998, they had their first 33-city national tour to promote their album entitled Kilas Balik. In 2004, Gigi also provided the soundtrack for an Indonesian film called Brownies – a film by award-winning director Hanung Bramantyo. Early this year, the band launched a new single entitled “Tak Lagi Percaya” via live streaming and held a live concert in Hong Kong for Gigi Kita (their loyal fans) in conjunction with their 20th anniversary last March.

Tiger Stripes, whose real name is Mikael Nordgren, is a DJ and producer from Sweden. Since the age of 10, he learnt many musical instruments, namely the guitar, bass, drums, and piano. He owes the house music boom that reached Swedish shores in the late 80s for his penchant for dance music, particularly the techy stuff. Soon, he found Leroy Burgess loving his garage tunes and has worked with him since. His releases have always had some distinctive characters ranging from heavy tech house sounds to percussive Afro house.

Mikael Nordgren AKA Tiger Stripes is also known by other aliases – D’Malicious and also 12th Floor. However, Tiger Stripes turned out to be his most prominent stage name. From 2004 onwards, he set out his journey with organic deep house, before he made the switch to a slicker sound in his 2006 collaboration with Jerome Sydenham called “Stockholm Go Bang!” on Ibadan Records. He also runs one of the most respected nightclubs in Stockholm which also bears the name Go Bang! since autumn 2001. During all these years, names like Osunlade, Dennis Ferrer, Jerome Sydenham, Kerry Chandler, François K and many more have all played at the club. Tiger Stripes has also put his trademark remix stamps on tracks such as Blaze’s “Most Precious Love” and Sydenham and Ferrer’s “Sandcastles” as well as for major labels like Positiva, Southern Fried and King Street. 2007 was really the year of Tiger Stripes with the releases of his debut album called Safari and his debut EP entitled “Mad at Me” (on Get Physical). In the following years, a few more EPs came out and a new studio got built. He has also gone places such as Tokyo’s Yellow where he performed in front of 10,000 people. His latest EP in 2014 named Sisters on Desolat was very well received.

His formative years in his early teens can be described as the era of breakbeat, funk, disco, soul, hip hop classics and the b-boy culture. At the age of 18, Roman broadened his genres and recorded some mixtapes at home and was ready for his first gig a year later.

In the Netherlands, he was famous in Limburg, a southern city in the country, for having spun old school and modern RnB and hip hop tracks in numerous clubs such as Zathura in Brunssum, The Nox in Maastricht, Nieuwe Nor in Heerlen and Mixx events in Kerkrade. This led him to be offered lots of gig opportunities in Amsterdam both at bars and festivals which he gladly accepted. Roman then headlined a number of parties such as The Legend of the Golden Era at Suzy Wong, Bum Rush in Hoofddorp and Monday in legendary Supperclub, Amsterdam. Roman hosts his own events called ‘In Effect’ and ‘In Full Effect’ in Heerlen monthly since 2010, purveying his RnB and hip hop live sets. His last and most notorious after party was ‘The Notorious IBE’, which was dubbed as the world’s biggest b-boy/dance event.

JBAG is Jerry Bouthier and Andrea Gorgerino; who is French and Italian respectively. They first met in London where they are now both based. Part of the Kitsuné family, Jerry is sound designer for numerous fashion labels, as well as a DJ and producer who runs digital imprint Continental Records. Meanwhile Andrea is a classically trained musician turned skilled producer who started playing piano at the age of five and completed his diploma at the SAE Institute UK when he was 24. The duo were both resident DJs, separately playing at club Boombox. They later merged into JBAG where Jerry normally researches and puts the music together while Andrea expertly produces them. They now play together for the events of fashion magazine Ponystep.

Following their single “Mogadisco”, they released one of last summer’s tropical anthems titled “Through Blue” which is a collaboration with the singer of Poland’s renowned electronic band Kamp. Dropping by with a couple of mates for a spot of pool, I wrap my chops around a fruity Lime & Lychee Iced Frappe (35k++) while the boys order up a couple of refreshing Iced Lemon Teas (25k++) to cool off from a hot afternoon. During the match we decide to kick things off with a couple of snacks from the bar bites menu – namely the lipsmacking honey Soy Chicken Wings (50k++) and Fresh Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls (45k++). Snacks duly scoffed and opponents duly thrashed, we get settled at a table on the decking (hence the name) at the front. Wimbledon highlights play out on the TVs as we peruse the menu, and I notice a huge poster advertising the upcoming third State of Origin rugby league match – the first two I’m told saw a house so packed that there were crowds spilling out the entrance and onto the pavement. And let’s not forget

the World Cup late shift finals. First up, we split a serving of the Garlic Prawns (90k++) on toasted sourdough bread drizzled in a delicious tangy sauce. For the mains, the others go with the Meat Lovers Skewers (100k++) from the chargrill section, and the new Citrus Salmon Teriyaki (160k++) from the seafood section. Both are utterly delectable – the tender mixed meat skewers a particular highlight, but my order of the not-yet-on-the-menu Beef Rendang Pizza is the day’s winner. The perfectly crispy base and thick layer of cheese deliciously complimented by the tender beef strips and classic Sumatran sauce.

Not wanting to pass up the opportunity of a new dessert, we split a serving of another dish so new it’s not on the menu yet – the Caramel Popcorn with vanilla ice cream, which we all agreed needs to be added to the dessert section pronto. A few more rounds of pool sees us into happy hour (9-10pm), where Bintang bottles are just 25k++, vodka mixers 35k++, tequila shots 20k++, espresso martinis 59k++ and house wine 65k++. To cut the story short, the truce that the human survivors make with the apes proved to be a wary one, thus the dawn of the conflict becomes unavoidable. Directed by Matt Reeves, this film explores more deeply on our contemporary societies in coping with conflicts. Expect a better visualization and some epic ape actions.

Carrying many similarities with those 80s sci-fi movies, this PG summer family movie is about three kids who receive a strange signal on their phones, which later turns out to be an SOS from an alien. They themselves are losing their homes to a highway construction project but they feel the call to help find the distressed alien home. And that alien is called Echo, hence the title. In this exquisite family film, expect wonders and adventures to unravel from which we can derive the emotional importance of home in our lives.

Blended Comedy, Romance. Director: Frank Coraci. Writer: Ivan Menchell, Clare Sera. Cast: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Joel McHale, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Kevin Nealon, Jessica Lowe, Terry Crews, Shaquille O’Neal. This comedy is based on a disastrous date that the two lead characters, Lauren (Barrymore) and Jim (Sandler), had. It was so unromantic that the two vow to never meet each other again. But fate tells otherwise, they and their respective kids must endure each other’s presence in the same suite in an African safari resort for a week. Now, you know where the fun comes from. Expect another quality comedy film by Sandler and the director Coraci (Wedding Planner and The Wateboy) who has worked with Sandler in his previous hit comedies. You ought not to miss this one.

The last time we heard from Jack White he had just split with ex wife Karen Elston and was all down in the dumps, singing about love as a force that is about as destructive as an A-bomb directly to the heart. Trust White to coax a killer album out of a rough time, but here on Lazaretto – his second solo album, there doesn’t appear to be a particularly unifying theme, other than a vehicle for the erstwhile White Stripe to direct his ire at the modern world in general, along with all its impertinence, declining morals and brattish, videogame-playing children waving their iPhones around at his concerts. The little s*&ts. As with Blunderbuss though, there’s the impression that White is the sort of person who thoroughly enjoys being bitter and resentful towards, well, anyone who’s ticked him off really. Listen carefully and for every cutting phrase there’s a reprieve to show us he’s well aware of what a cantankerous git he can be: “You drink water, I drink gasoline/one of us is happy, one of us is mean”, he confides amidst the off-key pianos and country fiddle of “Just One Drink”. Musically, Lazaretto has a distinctly harder edge than its predecessor, best exemplified in the raucously unhinged “High Ball Stepper”, which mutates from sinister slide guitar riff to room-shaking din, White hollering over the top like a man possessed (incidentally, ‘lazaretto’ is the Italian term for a mental hospital). The gloriously rowdy title track has a similar effect - say what you will, this man knows how to make one hell of a racket. Elsewhere, staccato Vaudeville pianos, lilting pedal steel guitars and the odd blistering riff are all tied together by White’s Southern drawl that is still capable of summoning up the ghosts of such blues forefathers as Blind Willie McTell & Robert Johnson. Opener “Three Women” is a reworking of McTell’s 1928 original, and “Black Bat Licorice” is as good a modern blues song as you’ll hear this side of the Great Depression. Despite its slightly cluttered feel, Lazaretto confirms that Jack White is an endlessly intriguing musician who stands way ahead of his peers – mining vintage Americana and making it relevant for a whole new generation. “All alone in my home/Nobody can touch me” he sings assuredly, and I for one would agree. Android Auto by Google Google has partnered with car manufacturers to introduce its new Android Auto version of its popular operating system. Poleng Now – July Lestari Art Space Lestari Art Space presents a solo exhibition by Javanese artist Ponco Setyohadi. Themed “Poleng”, a Balinese aspect of balance and harmony chiefly depicted through the checkered fabric of black and white; the exhibition showcases the artist’s collection of paintings that hold sway from the deep philosophical and religious interpretations of Balinese culture. orn in 1983 in Blahbatu, Wayan Upadana started to pursue his passion for art during junior high school. After graduating from high school, he entered the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Jogjakarta to major in sculpture. Being an artist is not a choice but an instinct and precise way to express his own values, hopes and dreams and even ideas and critiques. He lets his art be multi-interpreted which allows the viewer to creatively perceive his art without being cornered by any specific point or intention. His artwork is normally inspired by materials that can melt; he also often combines organic shapes with other objects that symbolize Bali. Besides concentrating on sculpture, he also creates paintings and video art which have been part of his creativity process.

His inspirations come from his surroundings, especially the rich culture of Bali. On his work titled “Silence Process”, he shows a human painted in white meditating with a barong mask on his head and an installed video on his chest. The video presents his idea on how global culture has given another color to Balinese tradition. Through brilliant ideas in his works, he has often been selected as a finalist in various competitions and art prizes including the Tujuh Bintang Art Award in 2009, Jakarta Art Award in 2010 and Young Sculptor Competition ICC Pandaan in 2010. He has also actively joined numerous exhibitions including “Bali: Return Economy” that was recently held at Fremantle Art Centre in Perth. His latest solo exhibition takes place in Ganesha Gallery titled “Home” where he explores the cultural issues related to everyday life in Balinese society. www.beatmag.com

After the treatment, we were lead to shower and enjoy a refreshing flower bath while sipping the warm ginger tea provided to emerge relaxed and rejuvenated. Ending the 120minute session was an application of essential frangipani body lotion to nurture the skin.

n absolutely pumping 6 foot plus Padang-Padang this afternoon, Rathu Suargita, Mustofa Jeksen, Koki Hendrawan and Koko Mitsua had 40 coveted minutes to battle it out for the two wildcard spots up for grabs in the prestigious Rip Curl Cup PadangPadang, which will see 12 of the world’s best and 12 of Indonesia’s best tuberiders take on Bali’s most spectacular wave in a one-day barrel extravaganza sometime during the 6 week waiting period that runs from July 5 to August 17. After working their way through the field of 24 surfers that started out the day with dreams of big hollow pits and a ticket into the main event, the four finalists took to the water for the last time as the sun was falling into the silvery green Indian Ocean.

The final was a pitched battle between the two boys from Kuta, with Mustofa Jeksen drawing first blood with a respectable barrel that earned him 7.17 points (out of a possible 10) from the judges. But last year’s Trials winner Rahtu Suargita posted the highest wave score of the final with his very first wave, a clean and deep double barrel that netted him an almost perfect score of 9.83, leaving no question that he wanted into the main event and the chance to hoist The Cup this year. From then on it was about as good as it gets in a final, with the two surfers trading blows wave after wave, with the occasional challenge from Bukit local Koki Hendrawan. Koko Mitsua

unfortunately existed the final early after a closeout washed him inside and onto the almost exposed reef, rolling him around and injuring his back, though not too seriously. But it all came down to wave selection, with Rahtu showing heaps of patience and savvy, ultimately finding another 9-point wave to add to his 9.83 for an 18.83 point total. And although Mustofa nailed a couple of beauties of his own to score a 9.5 and an 8.33, he never found that magic wave that would propel him into the lead, needing a 9.43. So when the horn sounded and the points were tallied, it was Rahtu Suargita claiming his second Indonesian Rip Curl Cup wildcard and Koki Hendrawan the Bukit local wildcard into the 2014 Rip Curl Cup Padang-Padang. After receiving his award on the podium, Rahtu was asked how he managed to best the highly competitive field and nab his second wild card in as many years. “I don’t know, I was just pretty much having fun out there. If I just let myself had fun and don’t think about results, I surf a lot better. So I just kept thinking about how I could have more by getting deeper in the barrel and staying in longer,” said Rahtu laughing. “But I knew in a final with Mustofa, he could easily get a 10, and there were so many waves, so I knew if it was my day it was my day…and it was. Thank you Padang-Padang!”
