July has been a mixed bag with Ramadhan and then the presidential elections making things a little quiet on the domestic front with numbers of local tourists down from normal years. While the Muslim people amongst us appear to eat more during Ramadhan (after breaking their fast in the evenings anyway), which keeps the restaurants happy, the hotels are down, since they definitely don’t travel very much. Domestic arrivals to the island have exploded over the past few years with something like six million local tourists recorded last year arriving to Bali, but we haven’t seen much of them during this July. Foreign arrivals continue to increase though and one gets the feeling it could be the quiet before the storm as Idul Fitri is coming soon (July 2829) and then the extended holidays of Lebaran, which means one thing; the place will be packed to the rim. The official results of the election will be announced on July 22 and we all hope that the results are clear and accepted by all parties and above all, level heads prevail. Entertainment is looking good as we close off July. The Ombak Surf Film Festival kicks off for three nights this weekend on Friday night at La Plancha, DJ Bobby from the notoriously famous and now closed Stadium at District also on Friday night, Juan Kidd at Cocoon and DJ Chuckie at Sky Dome on Saturday night. Then Sunday the Bali Boat Party Season 2014 kicks off early, and if you aren’t on the boat the usually pumping Sunday sessions at W Retreat (DJ Ejeca), Sheraton (White Magic) and Cocoon (Splash) are your choice. Watch out for next weekend as it again is totally massive. Check inside for all the details. The high season 2014 is almost here and it’s gonna be a very grand one this year with a bunch of incredible shows coming our way. Bali Somellier Wins the Top Award The Indonesian Sommelier Association has awarded their top honor this year to a Bali-based sommelier, Pamor Budi Kurniawan. The 5th annual Indonesian National Sommelier Competition was held in Jakarta at the Jakarta Wine and Cheese Festival. Thirty two of the country’s top sommeliers were put through rigorous testing which included a written test, tasting and service scenarios. Pamor is currently working at Bene Italian Kitchen, at Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort, overlooking the beach, where he curates an international wine collection and advises diners on wine pairings. Pamor will go on to represent Indonesia at the 2014 South East Asian Sommelier Competition in Bangkok in November.

Fashionable Place to Sleep Fashion TV is preparing to launch its first themed hotel called “Love Fashion Hotel by Fashion TV” or “Love F Hotel”. The hotel is scheduled to open in September 2014 and will be managed by the Budsan International. The hotel is located in the center of the tourist action in the south Legian area and all interior design will be in accordance with the Fashion TV concept. In addition to that, the hotel lobby is made like a catwalk and the staff will be welcoming guests like models from Fashion TV. The hotel will consist of 202 rooms and suites with two shops, two fine dining restaurants, bars, swimming pool with jacuzzi and a spa. Juan Kidd is one of the most recognized names in vocal dance and house music. He started his musical career when he used to go to raves at Hacienda back in the day, spending time to mess around with the decks at the after parties. He spent a summer in Marbella and got his first gig where he finally learnt how to mix properly. Returning to UK, he had his first real residency at Manchester’s Peruvia where Andy Daniels of Hed Kandi dragged him into the studio. He has since been one of the leaders of quality uplifting house music with releases on 303 Lovers, Defected, Size, Toolroom, Monique Music, Great Stuff, Re Birth and Factomia to name a few.

His first release on Defected, “Now You’re Gone” hit the top on Beatport for almost three weeks. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became a DJ.

I come from a musical background, I played the drums since a young age, and my whole dad’s side of the family are musicians. I first started DJing at the age of 14, starting off at house parties and working my way into the nightclub scene at 16 when I had my first residency!

How would you describe your sets?

I like to have a bit of variety in my sets, throwing classic acapellas in and mashing live! Getting the people to sing along aswell as dancing is the key for me.

What do you reckon are the most notable things you’ve accomplished?

For me I think my biggest accomplishment was getting the whole Melbourne Sound Movement radio play. The radio normally play nothing but cheese so to be able to have them support me and the Melbourne Movement was a huge thing. And obviously with “Swing” going triple platinum in Aus, that was something I hadn’t even dreamt of!

What do you think your Sky Dome show will be like?

Well I hope my show at sky dome will be epic. I’ve heard great things about it so I’m looking forward to it.

You have any Bali plans?

I don’t have any plans for Bali, I’ve never been there! I really want to get on one of those mopeds and go for a cruise, haha. Other than that just looking to have a good time!

Edu Imbernon is a great example of how a young artist can quickly reach the top in the electronic scene. At just 21 years of age the native Valenciano from Spain has torn up dance floors all over the planet with hits such as “El Baile Alemán” (produced alongside fellow partner Coyu) released under German label Liebe Detail – which was actually appointed ‘Best Underground Track of the Year’ by Beatport and was ultimately the most sold track in 2009. Whilst at the same time his ‘Mayenco’ EP release was the second largest vinyl seller on Decks.de.

Grenoble-born Caroline Hervé AKA Miss Kittin initially expressed an interest in visual art, but found herself developing an obsession for music as time progressed. She found her niche in electronic music in 1991 and started raving all around the country before doing her first mix in 1993. Her first set came a year later where she started her professional career with Tekmics Booking Agency, playing in the famous Dragon Ball parties of Southern France. Pursuing wider opportunities, she left France in 1996 and relocated to Geneva where she joined the Mental Groove Record Posse one year later.

Kittin and her long-time production partner The Hacker released “1982” and “Frank Sinatra” for their debut First Album. These songs became anthems of the electroclash scene and propelled them into the spotlight. Collaborating with Felix da Housecat, she released “Silver Screen (Shower Scene)” in 2001 which was used in the film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and included in the soundtrack of games such as Midnight Club 2 and The Getaway: Black Monday. She released her debut solo album I Com in 2004 which showed her spreading her wings with jacking Chicago house, distorted punk attitude, skanked-up dub and electronic pop. Her second solo album Batbox was released in 2008 on her Nobody’s Bizzness record label; she described the album as a flirtation with Goth culture, combining elements of techno and electro. She achieved international popularity through her single “Rippin Kittin” which was placed at number 435 on Pitchfork’s Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s list.

Briefly, who is DJ Chuckie? Chuckie: South American born, house music DJ/producer with a passion for entrepreneurship... oh... and the most travelled artist in the world! Ok, so someone who knows nothing about you asks, “What kind of music do you play?” What do you say? Chuckie: I would say I play dirty funkin’ house music. If you don’t know what it is then check out my weekly Dirty Dutch Radio podcasts! To be honest I like to flirt with a lot of different genres in my DJ sets because

that’s what keeps it interesting for me.. Sometimes when the vibe is right, I even go back to my roots and play some hip hop or dancehall records in my sets! How did the term “Dirty Dutch” come about? What does it mean to you? Chuckie: Basically, I wanted to create my own event where I could play whatever I wanted. I came up with the name Dirty Dutch because I was inspired at the Dutch streetculture. The “dirty” stands for street. I just wanted the musical selection for my own Dirty Dutch events way more genre crossing instead of just one genre getting played all night. Nowadays Dirty Dutch is more of a musical platform to help new talented artists launch their career. They say you are the great conduit from hip hop to house and to the new commercial EDM music. David Guetta was quoted as saying about you, “He is mixing the hip hop vibe with house music like no one else!” Would you agree with all that? Chuckie: In a certain way I can understand why people say that. My way of mixing comes from a hip hop mind state. Even if I don’t play a single hip hop record in a set, you can still hear that I sneak some basic elements of turntablism while playing. But in general, I like to juggle, cut, scratch or even grab a microphone while I’m playing and that’s all hip hop inspired. What was the smallest gig you played recently? Chuckie: I played on a private party for 30 people on New Year’s in Sydney, Australia. Smallest crowd but some big names like Leonardo Di Caprio, Jamie Foxx and Emanuelle Chriqui (Sloan from Entourage) were there and having the time of their lives...

How about the biggest? Chuckie: I did a lot of festivals this past year but the biggest one was definitely Tomorrowland in Belgium. I think there were like 70,000 people there during my set.. Which show was the best? Chuckie: The best show for me was the new Festival I started this year in Aruba called Electric Festival. I’m not saying that because it’s my own festival but because it was the first and the biggest electronic music festival in the Caribbean. The vibe was incredible and you could feel the intensity of it because the people were waiting for this for such a long time. I also think it’s a great step for electronic music. When was the moment you felt you had made it to the big time? And how did it feel? Chuckie: To be honest I never had that moment in my career. But there were a couple of moments where I was like “woooow, I must be doing something right!” For example the day that Puff Daddy called me to join him in a couple of studio sessions. Or the day that Enrique Iglesias called me to personally ask me if I wanted to remix one of his songs. The list goes on. I had people like Gloria Estefan, Missy Elliot, T-Pain, Akon and many others calling me to collaborate together. I also did a studio session with SwizzBeats but the craziest moment was when Timbaland called me and said that he would love to do a project with me. For me that’s a big deal! owever, head chef Rossano Rezelli disagrees, and in addition to his regular authentically home cooked menu, the Rome native has set about creating one hundred different pasta dishes. Yep, you read it right, one HUNDRED. All different. Just let that sink in for a minute. That’s lunch or dinner sorted every day for the next three months. Lucky enough to be given the opportunity to take just a fraction of the full menu out for a test drive, I amble through the cavernous Sheraton lobby and out through to the front pool deck overlooking Kuta beach and push open the door. I’m shown to a table on the middle dining level (the first level is al fresco pool fare, while the top deck is reserved for sunset snacking and cocktail hour) and am immediately presented with a jar containing a chilled flannel scented with a sprig of fragrant rosemary. It’s the first of many little touches that makes Bene stand out from the pack.

I get settled and order up a Bloody Bene (89k++) – Bene’s take on the classic bloody mary with fresh tomato juice and Havana Club rum, flavoured with parsley, oregano and spiced up with Tabasco. It’s a delicious blend, although on reflection, not the best choice considering I’m about to be chomping plates of pasta with tomato ragu, so from thereon in I decide to stick with the more refreshing Italian White Sangria (79k++) at the suggestion of restaurant manager Budi Pamor. Originally from Java, Budi clearly knows what he’s taking about when it comes to the drinks list, having been recently awarded Indonesian Sommelier of the Year, not to mention coming up with a matching wine list for each of the 100 pastas.

Moving on, and I get my fork stuck into the Bucatinitonno e Acciughe, which is simply fabulous despite the fact I usually don’t go in for anchovies or capers. Maybe it’s the liberal sprinkling of fat black olives – something which really elevates the next dish of Spaghetti Puttanesca also. I’m already feeling like I’ve eaten 100 pastas, but press on valiantly to sample the Penne Cipollotti e Salsiccia con Piselli (penne pasta with Italian sausages, onion, peas, parmesan cheese and parsley), which turns out to be my absolute favourite, probably something to do with the hearty tube steaks. Firmly occupying the post-Oasis void, Leicester’s Kasabian manage to straddle past and future with ease, fusing Beatles psychedelia with throbbing guitar assaults and Chemical Brothers-esque techno. Most definitely a ‘Marmite’ band, they are regarded as essential and ridiculous in fairly equal measures, but to their credit, it’s pretty obvious that the loutish ‘lad rock’ veneer and Gallagher-style swagger is just a front for something far more intriguing beneath the surface – particularly the double act of charismatic front man Tom Meighan and lanky guitar wizard Serge Pizzorno. Three years on from Velociraptor! and happily, Kasabian haven’t changed a thing. I mean, obviously it’s a different album with different songs with different names on it, but at the end of its 48 minutes and 13 seconds (see what they’ve done there?) we’re left thinking simply: “yep, this is a Kasabian album, it sounds EXACTLY like a Kasabian album should. Brilliant”. What little contrast there is from previous efforts is embodied by a deeper electro influences and a more direct, to the point sort of feel – everything stripped back to let the music stand out. Just look at the minimalist artwork and lower case single syllable song titles, it’s a far cry from the overstated track listing of 2009’s West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, but where the music is concerned, essentially we’re pretty much on the same ground. After a one minute seven seconds of ambient opener “(Shiva)”, the head banging din of “Bumblebeee” kicks in - “We’re in ex-tacy” repeats Meighan before all hell breaks loose to a psychotic Serge riff that is basically a reworked version of “Helter Skelter” from the White Album. “Stevie” and “Doomsday” do a similar job, this is the Kasabian bread and butter – foot stomping, stadium filling, exhilarating noise that has both heart and brains. At the other end of the scale is lead single ‘Eez-eh’. Built around a deceptively catchy pop-techno hook, the track has the most experimental feel to it, and features the best line (no pun intended) of the whole LP: “Everyone’s on bugle/now we’re being watched by Google”. On other tracks like ‘Treat’ and ‘Explodes’ the electro vibe merges seamlessly into the guitar noise, ensuring their marketability to both indie heads and the dance crowd. It’s an effective technique, and has ensured them a solid reputation as blistering live performers and as a result, festival favourites who have rightfully claimed their Glastonbury headline slot. Five albums in and 48.13 proves the boys from Blaby are up there with the best. Dan Ashcroft

adek Ardika loves beauty, and that is one of his many reasons he devoted himself to the world of art. Ardika uses his art to share an aesthetic experience he has been through; not only to share the beauty of what he sees with eyes, but also the beauty of words and attitudes. His art is eclectic, merging many styles into one. He does not put a label on what he is creating, because he knows it will only limit him in exploring the art. He also believes when a work has represented the artist’s purpose, style will never be measured. His art is inspired by ambiguous words and shapes that are not concrete and natural in an area where language structure is unnecessary, because he thinks that art should be dominated by order.

What influences his art is the problems and matters that happen around him, especially environmental and cultural issues. He pours these ideas about human life into mediums such as canvas, fiberglass, wood, aluminum and plastic. Like his work titled “Mencari Makna Dalam Kekosongan Objek”, he conveys a message about the search for knowledge and consciousness as well as the complexity of human beings. Kadek Ardika has exhibited his art in Bali and also in Jakarta, Solo and Surabaya as well as Jogjakarta, the city where he studied art. One of his past exhibitions titled “Plastic Attack” was held at Tonyraka Art Gallery in 2013, where he and four other artists treated plastic as a new medium to actualize their creativity and test concepts. www.beatmag.com

After a wash down, the therapist applied the spa’s very own body lotion which holds aromatherapy scents to finally revive body and mind.

Team Rip Curl Cleans Up Padang-Padang for the Rip Curl Cup 2014 Opening Ceremony

is traditional the day before the Rip Curl Cup Opening Ceremony each year, the Rip Curl crew and surf team spend the morning at Padang-Padang searching every nook and cranny of the beach, hillside and parking lots picking up plastic and all other forms of trash that stack up with all the tourists coming to enjoy the beautiful sandy beach, the warm water, and the amazing view.

At this year’s beach clean up, the Rip Curl crew was joined by some energetic volunteers including Udayana University exchange students, the Padang-Padang Boardriders Club, and members of the local community. At the end of the day they had filled up 30 big garbage bags full of trash and left a nice clean scene behind. A special guest that joined in the clean up was Rip Curl pro surfer Francisco Alves from Portugal, who had arrived the day before and is here to compete in the Rip Curl Cup. The waiting period for the 11th annual Rip Curl Cup Padang-Padang, long known as the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest and Bali’s longest running professional surfing contest, began on July 5th and ends on August 17th, giving Huey a full six weeks to deliver the exacting conditions that will see 24 of the finest international and local tubemasters competing in the spitting green barrels of the Balinese Pipeline. In a departure from the previous year’s format, this year’s Rip Curl Cup will see 24 rather than 32 competitors: 12 international icons and 12 of Indonesia’s finest barrel masters. With an
